Super-Kamiokande (SK), a 50-kiloton water Cherenkov detector, is one of the most sensitive neutrino detectors. SK can be used also for supernova observations by detecting neutrinos generated at supernova. In order to improve the performance of the detector for supernovae, we are developing two new features, one for recording all information within one minute and the other for recording calorimetrical information for nearby supernovae. The currentSKdata acquisition(DAQ)systemreadsoutallthe photomultipliertube(PMT)hits, includingthedark noise,andappliessoftwaretriggerto selecteventsto record. Therefore,thePMThits causedbyverylow energyevents below the threshold are not stored. Since supernovaburstisavery rare phenomenon and detailsof theburst mechanism are not known yet, all possible data should be recorded without anybias in the trigger system. To accomplish this, we are addinganew featuretotheDAQsystemto recordallthePMThit information beforeand aftertheburst occursfor about one minute. The neutrinoburst froma supernovafarther than about 1300 light years canbe recorded without lossof databy the currentDAQsystem.However,ifa supernovaburst occurred withinafew hundredsoflight years,the neutrinoevent rate can be more than 30 MHz and the system can record only about 20% of the events. To overcome this inefficiency, wearedevelopinganewDAQsystemthatcanhandlesuchhigh-rate neutrinoevents. ThisnewDAQsystemrecords the number of hit PMTs so that we can count the neutrinos and obtain a time profile of the number of neutrinos emitted at the supernova. We will present the implementation of these improvements and show the results of the tests with the prototype.

We report a high-statistics measurement of the relative branching fraction Br(D0 --> pi+pi-pi0)/Br(D0 --> K-pi+pi0). A 357 inverse fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider was used for the analysis. The relative branching fraction Br(D0 --> pi+pi-pi0)/Br(D0 --> K-pi+pi0) is determined with an accuracy comparable to the latest world average value.

KS 0 KS 0 production in two-photon collisions has been studied using a 397.6 fb-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- collider. For the first time the cross sections are measured in the two-photon center-of-mass energy range between 2.4 GeV and 4.0 GeV and angular range | cos θ* | < 0.6. Combining the results with measurements of γ γ → K+ K- from Belle, we observe that the cross section ratio σ (KS 0 KS 0) / σ (K+ K-) decreases from ∼0.13 to ∼0.01 with increasing energy. Signals for the χc 0 and χc 2 charmonium states are also observed. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report measurements of the charmless semileptonic decays B0 → π- / ρ- l+ ν and B+ → π0 / ρ0 l+ ν, based on a sample of 2.75 × 108B over(B, ) events collected at the Υ{hooked} (4 S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- asymmetric collider. In this analysis, the accompanying B meson is reconstructed in the semileptonic mode B → D(*) l ν, enabling detection of the signal modes with high purity. We measure the branching fractions B (B0 → π- l+ ν) = (1.38 ± 0.19 ± 0.14 ± 0.03) × 10-4, B (B0 → ρ- l+ ν) = (2.17 ± 0.54 ± 0.31 ± 0.08) × 10-4, B (B+ → π0 l+ ν) = (0.77 ± 0.14 ± 0.08 ± 0.00) × 10-4 and B (B+ → ρ0 l+ ν) = (1.33 ± 0.23 ± 0.17 ± 0.05) × 10-4, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to form factor uncertainties, respectively. For each mode we also present the partial branching fractions in three q2 intervals: q2 < 8, 8 ≤ q2 < 16, and q2 ≥ 16 GeV2 / c2. From our partial branching fractions for B → π l ν and recent results for the form factor from unquenched Lattice QCD calculations, we obtain values of the CKM matrix element | Vu b |. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. We have measured the branching fractions for the exclusive decay modes B→χc1(2)K(K∗)B→χc1(2)K(K∗) using a 140 fb−1140 fb−1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e+e− collider. The measured branching fractions for B+→χc1K+B+→χc1K+, B0→χc1K0B0→χc1K0, B0→χc1K∗0B0→χc1K∗0 and B+→χc1K∗+B+→χc1K∗+ decay modes are (4.5±0.2±0.5)×10−4(4.5±0.2±0.5)×10−4, (3.5±0.3±0.5)×10−4(3.5±0.3±0.5)×10−4, (3.1±0.3±0.7)×10−4(3.1±0.3±0.7)×10−4 and (4.1±0.6±0.9)×10−4(4.1±0.6±0.9)×10−4, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic. We do not observe statistically significant signals for the B→χc2K(K∗)B→χc2K(K∗) decay modes and set upper limits at the 90% confidence level. We also study the helicity distribution for B→χc1K∗B→χc1K∗ decay mode and show that the longitudinal polarization component is dominant.

In order to search new physics beyond the standard model using B meson decays, we are planning SuperKEKB with a luminosity 5/spl times/10/sup 35/cm/sup -2/s/sup -1/. To tolerate a high trigger rate of 10/spl sim/30 kHz and to handle a large number of unified readout modules, we design a new event building farm. In order to validate the design, we have set up a prototype event building farm for SuperKEKB and measured the performance. The prototype of readout part works with at least 10 kHz event rate. For a design value, we find that the further software improvement and the faster PC are needed. Event distribution part of the prototype tolerates the high event rate by increasing the number of event builder units. We conclude that the developed event building farm tolerates the high rate by adding event building units to keep up with gradual increase in luminosity.

We have searched for τ lepton decays, τ-→Λπ- and τ-→Λπ-, that simultaneously violate the conservation of the lepton (L) and baryon (B) number using a data sample of 154 fb-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider. No evidence for a signal was found in either of the decay modes and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B(τ-→Λπ-)

We present measurements of the branching fraction, the polarization parameters and CP-violating asymmetries in B0→D*+D *- decays using a 140 fb-1 data sample collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e+e- collider. We obtain B(B0→D*+D*-)=[0. 81±0.08(stat)±0.11(syst)]×10-3, R⊥=0.19±0. 08(stat)±0.01(syst), R0=0.57±0.08(stat)±0.02(syst), S=-0.75±0.56(stat)±0.12(syst) and A=-0.26±0.26(stat) ±0.06(syst). Consistency with Standard Model expectations is also discussed.

We have searched for a T/CP violation signature arising from an electric dipole form factor (d_tau) of the tau lepton in the e+e- -> tau+tau- reaction. Using an optimal observable method for 29.5 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider at sqrt{s}=10.58 GeV, we obtained the preliminary result Re(d_tau) = (1.15 +- 1.70) x 10^{-17} ecm and Im(d_tau) = (-0.83 +- 0.86) x 10^{-17} ecm for the real and imaginary parts of d_tau, respectively, and set the 95% confidence level limits -2.2 < Re(d_tau) < 4.5 (10^{-17} ecm) and -2.5 < Im(d_tau) < 0.8 (10^{-17} ecm)., Invited talk at the Seventh International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics (TAU02), Santa Cruz, Ca, USA, Sept 2002, 8 pages, LaTeX, 19 eps figures

We report on a study of $\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{(*) 0} \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays using 29.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB storage ring. Making no assumptions about the intermediate mechanism, the branching fractions for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{* 0} \pi^+ \pi^-$ are determined to be $(8.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.5) \times 10^{-4} $ and $ (6.2 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.8) \times 10^{-4}$ respectively. An analysis of $\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{0} \pi^+ \pi^-$ candidates yields to the first observation of the color-suppressed hadronic decay $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \rho^0$ with the branching fraction $(2.9 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-4}$. We measure the ratio of branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^0 \rho^0) / {\mathcal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^0 \omega)$ = 1.6 $\pm$ 0.8.

We present measurements of CP-violating parameters in $B^0(\bar{B}{}^0) \to \eta^\prime K_S^0$ and $B^{\pm} \to \eta' K^{\pm}$ decays based on a 41.8 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. We fully reconstruct one neutral $B$ meson as a $B^0(\bar{B}{}^0) \to \eta^\prime K_S^0$ CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying $B$ from its decay products. From the distribution of time intervals between pairs of $B$ meson decay points, we obtain the CP-violating asymmetry parameters ${\mathcal S}_{\eta^\prime K_S^0} = 0.28\pm0.55(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.08}(syst)$, and ${\mathcal A}_{\eta^\prime K_S^0} = 0.13\pm0.32(stat)^{+0.09}_{-0.06}(syst)$. We also reconstruct charged $B^{\pm} \to \eta^\prime K^{\pm}$ decays and determine a direct-CP violating asymmetry value of ${\mathcal A}_{\eta^\prime K^\pm}=(-1.5\pm7.0(stat)\pm0.9(syst))%$.

The B -> D^{(*)} K^- K^{(*)0} decays have been observed for the first time. The branching fractions of the B -> D^{(*)} K^- K^{(*)0} decay modes are measured. Significant signals are found for the B -> D^{(*)} K^- K^{*0} and B^- -> D^0 K^- K^0_S decay modes. The invariant mass and polarization distributions for the K^-K^{*0} and K^-K^0_S subsystems have been studied. For the K^-K^{*0} sybsystem these distributions agree well with those expected for two-body B -> D^{(*)} a_1^-(1260) decays, with a_1^-(1260) -> K^- K^{*0}. The analysis was done using 29.4 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the e^+ e^- asymmetric collider KEKB.

This paper describes a study of B meson decays to the pseudoscalar-vector final state \rho\pi using 31.9\times 10^6 B\bar{B} events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. The branching fractions B(B^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+) = (8.0^{+2.3+0.7}_{-2.0-0.7}) \times 10^{-6} and B(B^0 -> \rho^{+-} \pi^{-+}) = (20.8^{+6.0+2.8}_{-6.3-3.1}) \times 10^{-6} are obtained. In addition, a 90% confidence level upper limit of B(B^0 \to \rho^0\pi^0) < 5.3 \times 10^{-6}is reported.

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb−1 data sample recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν decay to the kinematic limit at which the D ∗+ is at rest with respect to the B 0 , we extract the product of |Vcb| with the normalization of the decay form factor F(1), |Vcb|F(1)=(3.54±0.19±0.18)×10−2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A value of |Vcb|=(3.88±0.21±0.20±0.19)×10−2 is obtained using a theoretical calculation of F(1), where the third error is due to the theoretical uncertainty in the value of F(1). The branching fraction B ( B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν ) is measured to be (4.59±0.23±0.40)×10−2.

We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector, we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 -> eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+ -> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+-> eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20

KEKB B-factory is now aiming for an upgrade to a luminosity of a few times 1035cm-2s-1, where the trigger rate will increase up to 30 kHZ. This is beyond the capability of the current data acquisition system, and therefore we introduce a new system based on a common 9U VME mother board, consisting of a frontend and a processor part. For the processor part. We choose a commercially available PMC CPU module with a PC-based architecture and an Intel CPU, and a vanilla Linux operating system on which the Belle-standard analysis software framework is utilized for the data processing. Since realtime logics are implemented in the on-board FPGA, we do not require any realtime Linux extensions. We have measured the performance of such a system, including the CPU consumption, process interruption rate, and total data transfer rate. We demonstrate that Linux with no realtime extension really can cope with the upgrade plan of Belle and prove advantages of this approach through these measurements.

The branching fractions and the decay amplitudes of B -> J/psi K^* decays are measured in a 29.4/fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. The decay amplitudes of helicity states of the J/psi K^* system are determined from the full angular distribution of the final state particles in the transversity basis. The branching fractions are measured to be (1.29\pm0.05\pm0.13) \times 10^{-3} for neutral mesons and (1.28\pm0.07\pm0.14) \times 10^{-3} for charged mesons. The measured longitudinal and transverse (perpendicular to the transversity plane) amplitudes are |A_0|^2 = 0.62\pm0.02\pm0.03 and |A_{\perp}|^2 = 0.19\pm0.02\pm0.03, respectively. The value of |A_{\perp}|^2 shows that the CP even component dominates in the B^0 \to J/\psi K^{*0}(K_S\pi^0) decay., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables, to appear in Phys. Lett. B

The oscillation frequency of B0-B0bar mixing (Delta-m_d) has been measured using 29.1 fb^{-1} of datacollected with the Belle detector at KEKB. This measurement is made through the distributions of the proper decay time difference of B pairs in events tagged as same- and opposite-flavor decays. In each event, one $B$ is fully reconstructed in a flavor-specific hadronic decay mode, while the flavor of the other is extracted through a likelihood calculated from the b-flavor information carried in its final decay products. We obtain Delta-m_d = (0.528 +- 0.017 +- 0.011) ps^{-1}, where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B

We present measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays Lambda_c^+ --> Lambda0 K+ and Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma0 K+ (both first observations), Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ K+ pi- (seen with large statistics for the first time), Lambda_c^+ --> p K+ K- and Lambda_c^+ --> p phi (measured with improved accuracy). Improved branching ratio measurements for the decays Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ K+ K- and Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ phi, which are attributed to W-exchange diagrams, are shown. We also present the first evidence for Lambda_c^+ --> Xi(1690)^0 K+ and set an upper limit on the non-resonant decay Lambda_c^+ --> Sigma+ K+ K-. This analysis was performed using 32.6 fb^{-1} of data collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric e+ e- collider KEKB., Submitted to Phys. Lett. B. v2: A small correction to the Authorlist was made. An earlier version of this analysis was released as BELLE-CONF-0130, hep-ex/0108003

A next generation B-factory experiment, Belle II, is now being constructed at KEK in Japan. The upgraded accelerator SuperKEKB is designed to have the maximum luminosity of 8 × 1035 cm−2s−1 that is a factor 40 higher than the current world record. As a consequence, the Belle II detector yields a data stream of the event size ~1 MB at a Level 1 rate of 30 kHz. The Belle II High Level Trigger (HLT) is designed to reduce the Level 1 rate to 1/5 by performing the real time full event reconstruction and by applying the physics level event selection as the software trigger. In this paper, the development of the high level trigger system for Belle II and its performance is discussed.
