Pumpout of argon ions by ICRF waves has been observed in C-Mod deuterium L- and I-mode plasmas that had a substantial hydrogen fraction. The effect is manifested by a reduction of core argon x-ray brightness up to a factor of 90% on time scales of tens of milliseconds following injection of ICRF power. For Ar16+, the pumpout is strongest for hydrogen minority concentrations between 0.25 and 0.4, when the ICRF waves are not expected to result in minority heating. Modeling with the TORIC code suggests that the pumpout process occurs when the H/D mode conversion layer overlaps with the 2nd harmonic impurity resonance layer. The magnitude of the argon pumpout is independent of ICRF power above an apparent threshold of ∼500 kW, independent of electron density and appears to decrease as the plasma current is increased. Potential application as a heavy impurity control tool in reactors is discussed.

As part of ITPA-Integrated Operational Scenario activities, this contribution reviews recent experimental characterizations of radio-frequency (RF)-induced scrape-off layer (SOL) modifications of various tokamaks worldwide and of the LArge Plasma Device at UCLA. The phenomenology, as observed using a large variety of measurement techniques, is consistent with expectations from RF sheath rectification. Emphasis is then put on the complex three-dimensional (3D) spatial patterns of the RF–SOL interaction, in relation to the magnetic topology and the spatial distribution of RF currents over the metallic structures surrounding the RF wave launchers. Dependence on the local plasma parameters in the antenna vicinity is also briefly addressed. The final part discusses implications for future devices.

This paper summarizes the physical principles behind the novel three-ion scenarios using radio frequency waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). We discuss how to transform mode conversion electron heating into a new flexible ICRF technique for ion cyclotron heating and fast-ion generation in multi-ion species plasmas. The theoretical section provides practical recipes for selecting the plasma composition to realize three-ion ICRF scenarios, including two equivalent possibilities for the choice of resonant absorbers that have been identified. The theoretical findings have been convincingly confirmed by the proof-of-principle experiments in mixed H?D plasmas on the Alcator C-Mod and JET tokamaks, using thermal 3He and fast D ions from neutral beam injection as resonant absorbers. Since 2018, significant progress has been made on the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks in H?4He and H?D plasmas, guided by the ITER needs. Furthermore, the scenario was also successfully applied in JET D?3He plasmas as a technique to generate fusion-born alpha particles and study effects of fast ions on plasma confinement under ITER-relevant plasma heating conditions. Tuned for the central deposition of ICRF power in a small region in the plasma core of large devices such as JET, three-ion ICRF scenarios are efficient in generating large populations of passing fast ions and modifying the q-profile. Recent experimental and modeling developments have expanded the use of three-ion scenarios from dedicated ICRF studies to a flexible tool with a broad range of different applications in fusion research. Owing to its high magnetic field, high power, and compact size, the SPARC experiment will operate with divertor conditions at or above those expected in reactor-class tokamaks. Power exhaust at this scale remains one of the key challenges for practical fusion energy. Based on empirical scalings, the peak unmitigated divertor parallel heat flux is projected to be greater than 10 GW m−2. This is nearly an order of magnitude higher than has been demonstrated to date. Furthermore, the divertor parallel Edge-Localized Mode (ELM) energy fluence projections (~11–34 MJ m−2) are comparable with those for ITER. However, the relatively short pulse length (~25 s pulse, with a ~10 s flat top) provides the opportunity to consider mitigation schemes unsuited to long-pulse devices including ITER and reactors. The baseline scenario for SPARC employs a ~1 Hz strike point sweep to spread the heat flux over a large divertor target surface area to keep tile surface temperatures within tolerable levels without the use of active divertor cooling systems. In addition, SPARC operation presents a unique opportunity to study divertor heat exhaust mitigation at reactor-level plasma densities and power fluxes. Not only will SPARC test the limits of current experimental scalings and serve for benchmarking theoretical models in reactor regimes, it is also being designed to enable the assessment of long-legged and X-point target advanced divertor magnetic configurations. Experimental results from SPARC will be crucial to reducing risk for a fusion pilot plant divertor design.

Ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating will be the sole auxiliary heating method on SPARC for both full-field (Bt0 ~ 12 T) D–T operation and reduced field (Bt0 ~ 8 T) D–D operation. Using the fast wave at ~120 MHz, good wave penetration and strong single-pass absorption is expected for D–T(3He), D(3He), D(H) and4He(H) heating scenarios. The dependences of wave absorption on${k_\parallel }$,3He concentration, resonance location, antenna poloidal location and losses on alpha particles and ash have been studied. The antenna loading has been assessed by comparison with the Alcator C-Mod antennae. An antenna spectrum of${k_\parallel }\sim 15\text{--}18\,{\textrm{m}^{ - 1}}$is shown to be good for both core absorption and edge coupling. For the control of impurity sources, the antenna straps are rotated ~10° to be perpendicular to the B field and the straps can run with different power levels in order to optimize the antenna spectrum and to minimize the image current on the antenna frame. Combining the physics constraints with the SPARC port design, maintenance requirement and contingency against antenna failure during D–T operation, we plan to mount on the inner wall of the vacuum vessel a total of 12 4-strap antennae in 6 ports while keeping 3-strap antennae that are insertable and removable on port plugs as the backup option.

Circulating power within a multijunction launcher is both the system’s greatest strength and a fundamental weakness. Although destructive interference of power reflected from the plasma interface at the multijunction results in low return loss to the RF source, the resulting standing wave within the launcher increases peak electric field, thereby placing fundamental limitations on maximum power handling due to the onset of multipactor breakdown. Passive active multijunctions improve impedance matching at low edge densities but suffer reduction in power density and non-optimal directivity due to the sparse array theorem as half of the waveguides are passive elements. An alternative technique of impedance matching a fully active lower hybrid grill to low edge density conditions with internal matching structures within the waveguide apertures is presented. This method of impedance matching reduces circulating power, sensitivity to edge density conditions and ponderomotive effects, and improves both power density and array directivity.

This paper reports the latest lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) experimental and modeling investigations conducted on Alcator C-Mod, which further elucidates the role of the scrape-off layer (SOL) in determining the magnitude and profile of wave power deposition. In the latest C-Mod LHCD experiment, with a proper management of the SOL plasma, a recovery of efficient current drive is observed in a diverted configuration at densities exceeding the previously identified LH density limit of n¯e ≈ 1.0x1020 m−3. By operating at higher current, i.e., at lower Greenwald fraction, the SOL width is reduced and the turbulence level is minimized. Under this condition, parasitic wave power losses occurring in the edge/SOL region are found to be minimized. In our modeling study, a shift or spread in the poloidal mode number by the SOL turbulence is investigated in order to better match the experimental power deposition profile with an available ray-tracing/Fokker-Planck model. The approach is to introduce an additional spectral broadening mechanism by launching the rays with a non-negligible poloidal wavenumber component while preserving the launched n// power spectrum. This approach contrasts to spectral broadening achieved in the n// space. An initial modeling investigation on the C-Mod plasma reproduces an experimental on-axis power deposition profile.

Building on Alcator C-Mod experience and using the emerging technology of high-temperature superconducting magnet, SPARC is designed to be a compact (R0 = 1.65 m), high field (B0 = 12 T) pulsed tokamak to carry out D-T burning experiments and to demonstrate net-gain from fusion energy. Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating is proposed as the sole auxiliary heating method based on its success on Alcator C-Mod as well as TFTR and JET during their D-T operations. Among all the heating methods, ICRF heating is the only practical and proven method that can heat high density and high field plasmas in SPARC for both the pre-tritium operation and D-T operation. The pre-conceptual design (V0) of the ICRF system has 12 four-strap antennas. Each antenna will be powered by two 2-MW transmitters. Total RF source power (f ~ 120 MHz) will be ≥ 50 MW. Because of high edge density, the antenna loading is expected to be similar to that on Alcator C-Mod, resulting in relatively low voltage on the antennas and in the transmission lines. The single-pass-absorption (SPA) of the fast waves is much higher than that on Alcator C-Mod for the same plasma composition. For D-T burning plasmas with a small amount of 3He, combining the 2nd harmonic T heating and minority 3He heating and in some cases, fundamental D heating, will have good absorption under most plasma conditions. There exists a large parameter space in 3He concentration, k|| and RF frequency for reliable heating. To minimize the impact of impurities, we will use the latest techniques in antenna design and operation scheme, including aligning antenna straps to the magnetic field and tailoring antenna spectra. Ferrite tuners will be implemented in the transmission lines for real-time antenna matching during transient events like L-H transitions and ELMs.

This paper addresses considerations for the radio frequency (RF) heating and current drive actuators on the Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF), focusing on the Lower Hybrid Range of Frequency (LHRF) and Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency (ICRF). FNSF will require long (∼months), steady-state pulses to fulfill its mission of high neutron fluence operation for the qualification of fusion nuclear technologies prototypical for a power plant. RF actuators are uniquely capable of sustaining the plasma without requiring large line-of-sight penetrations through the breeding blanket, which mitigates the impact on tritium breeding and neutron shielding. The technology for generation and transmission of RF waves in the LHRF and ICRF are fully mature, however the lifetime of plasma-facing antenna components in the reactor environment remains a significant technology gap. Moving the location of RF actuators from the low field side (LFS) to the high field side (HFS) of the tokamak reduces fluxes of turbulent plasma and energetic particles to the antenna. Compact HFS antenna designs are able to fit within the blanket sectors with minimal impact on overall dimensions. Material choices for antenna structures represent a significant challenge. Existing materials are unable to simultaneously meet the requirements for high conductivity, high strength, high temperature, and low activation. Pathways forward with respect to materials development are identified.

The Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) is examined here as part of a two step program from ITER to commercial power plants. This first step is considered mandatory to establish the materials and component database in the real fusion in-service environment before proceeding to larger electricity producing facilities. The FNSF can be shown to make tremendous advances beyond ITER, toward a power plant, particularly in plasma duration and fusion nuclear environment. A moderate FNSF is studied in detail, which does not generate net electricity, but does reach the power plant blanket operating temperatures. The full poloidal Dual Coolant Lead Lithium (DCLL) blanket is chosen, with alternates being the Helium Cooled Lead Lithium (HCLL) and Helium Cooled Ceramic Breeder/Pebble Bed (HCCB/PB). Several power plant relevant choices are made in order to follow the philosophy of targeted technologies. Any fusion core component must be qualified by fusion relevant neutron testing and highly integrated non-nuclear testing before it can be installed on the FNSF in order to avoid the high probability of constant failures in a plasma-vacuum system. A range of missions for the FNSF, or any fusion nuclear facility on the path toward fusion power plants, are established and characterized by several metrics. A conservative physics strategy is pursued to accommodate the transition to ultra-long plasma pulses, and parameters are chosen to represent the power plant regime to the extent possible. An operating space is identified, and from this, one point is chosen for further detailed analysis, with R = 4.8 m, a = 1.2 m, I P = 7.9 MA, B T = 7.5 T, β N Gr = 0.9, f BS = 0.52, q 95 = 6.0, H 98 ∼1.0, and Q = 4.0. The operating space is shown to be robust to parameter variations. A program is established for the FNSF to show how the missions for the facility are met, with a He/H, a DD and 5 DT phases. The facility requires ∼25 years to complete its DT operation, including 7.8 years of neutron production, and the remaining spent on inspections and maintenance. The DD phase is critical to establish the ultra-long plasma pulse lengths. The blanket testing strategy is examined, and shows that many sectors have penetrations for heating and current drive (H/CD), diagnostics, or Test Blanket Modules (TBMs). The hot cell is a critical facility element in order for the FNSF to perform its function of developing the in-service material and component database. The pre-FNSF R&D is laid out in terms of priority topics, with the FNSF phases driving the time-lines for R&D completion. A series of detailed technical assessments of the FNSF operating point are reported in this issue, showing the credibility of such a step, and more detailed emphasis on R&D items to pursue. These include nuclear analysis, thermo-mechanics and thermal-hydraulics, liquid metal thermal hydraulics, transient thermo-mechanics, tritium analysis, maintenance assessment, magnet specification and analysis, materials assessments, core and scrape-off layer (SOL)/divertor plasma examinations.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), also known as Selective Laser MeltingTM (SLMTM), allows additive manufacture of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) Radio Frequency (RF) launchers from a new material, Glenn Research Copper 84 (GRCop-84), a Cr2Nb (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) precipitation hardened alloy, in configurations unachievable with conventional machining. The resolution and geometric limitations are tested to explore the limitations of L-PBF printing of GRCop-84. Printing holes in the vertical and horizontal direction are examined to determine the minimum cooling channel diameter. Internal stress limits the minimum thickness of vertical walls and septa to 1 mm, thinner walls warp during printing. Roughness is minimized on vertical surfaces and increases on both upper and lower surfaces as angle increases. Accuracy within 40 μm is typical on well supported structures.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) of Glenn Research Copper 84 (GRCop-84), a Cr2Nb (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) precipitation hardened alloy, produces a fully dense high conductivity alloy with a yield strength of 500 MPa and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 740 MPa, superior to other competing copper alloys, and 20% elongation at fracture for material stressed perpendicular to the build direction. The high thermal stability of the Cr2Nb precipitate in the copper matrix reduces coarsening and maintains a 300 MPa yield, 520 MPa UTS and 26% elongation after a 900 °C, 5-h heat treatment, while a 3 h 450 °C heat treatment increases yield to 810 MPa, UTS to 970 MPa with 9% elongation at fracture, for samples stressed perpendicular to the build direction. Tensile strength anisotropy based on print direction was attributed to internal stress and columnar grain formation. Void nucleation during tensile fracture was initiated by brittle fracture of precipitate particles within the copper matrix. Fracture cusps contain matching precipitate fragment geometry on opposing sides located near the cusp center in at least 80% of fracture cusps. An optimal precipitate size of 100 nm is predicted for maximum tensile strength from precipitates on fracture surfaces, while tensile testing with varying heat treatments shows maximum strength with 100 nm and smaller precipitates. Cr2Nb precipitates are shown to transition between polycrystalline and monocrystalline structures at high temperature.

New experiments on Alcator C-Mod reveal that the favorable impurity screening characteristics of the high-field side (HFS) scrape-off layer (SOL), previously reported for single null geometries, is retained in double null configurations, despite the formation of an extremely thin SOL. In balanced double-null, nitrogen injected locally into the HFS SOL is better screened by a factor of 2.5 compared to the same injection into the low field side (LFS) SOL. This result is insensitive to plasma current and Greenwald fraction. Nitrogen injected into the HFS SOL is not as well screened (only a factor of 1.5 improvement over LFS) in unbalanced double-null discharges, when the primary divertor is in the direction of B×∇B. In this configuration, impurity ‘plume’ emission patterns indicate that an opposing E × B drift competes with the parallel impurity flow to the divertor. In balanced double-null plasmas, the dispersal pattern exhibits a dominant E × B motion. Unbalanced discharges with the primary divertor opposite the direction of B×∇B exhibit excellent HFS screening characteristics – a factor of 5 enhancement compared to LFS. These data support the idea that future tokamaks should locate all RF actuators and close-fitting wall structures on the HFS and employ near-double-null magnetic topologies, both to precisely control plasma conditions at the antenna/plasma interface and to maximally mitigate the impact of local impurity sources arising from plasma-material interactions. The establishment of reactor-relevant radiofrequency heating and current drive techniques is a focus of work on DIII-D in the next five-year period. This paper gives an overview of the planned experimental work in the areas of (1) nearly vertically launched ECCD, (2) ‘helicon’ (whistlers or fast waves in the lower hybrid range of frequencies) current drive, and (3) high-field-side-launch (HFS) lower hybrid (slow wave) current drive. Each of these techniques addresses the need for efficient off-axis current drive for a steady-state tokamak reactor to supplement the bootstrap current and to provide current profile control, and each will be experimentally assessed at a coupled power level of ~1 MW on DIII-D in the next few years.

An experiment on EAST is used to study the fast wave rectification by only an actively powered I-port antenna. The plasma potential up to 100 V was found in the region that does not map along the magnetic field line to active I-port antenna. This enhancement correlates with the local fast wave intensity. An increase in the loading resistance and heating efficiency was observed at a low parallel wave number. The higher heating efficiency is seen to cause lower unabsorbed fast wave power in the SOL regions. This can cause a decrease in the fast wave field intensity that reaches plasma facing components and can result in a decrease in the plasma potential and slow wave intensity.

This paper describes the analysis following the breakdown of an ion cyclotron radio frequency (ICRF) tuner purchased from Advanced Ferrite Technology (AFT). The codes used in the analysis were CST and COMSOL. These codes use the standard gyromagnetic model for the ferrite, which gives results that are largely in error when compared with measurements at ICRF and at lower hybrid frequencies. We have measured a slab of the ferrite used in the ICRF tuner provided by AFT and from these measurements we have constructed a tabular model of the ferrite and inserted it into the COMSOL code. The results give performance that closely agrees with the performance specifications issued by AFT. We then used this modified code to correlate the simulation with the destructive evidence found in the tuner. The correlation was good between the destruction spot and the peak of the standing electric field. Pictures of the destruction and the heating in the tuner and the standing field results from the simulation are given.

Launching lower hybrid (LH) waves from the high field side (HFS) of a tokamak offers significant advantages over low–field-side (LFS) launch with respect to both wave physics and plasma material interactions (PMIs). The higher magnetic field opens the window between wave accessibility and the condition for strong electron Landau damping, allowing LH waves from the HFS to penetrate into the core of burning plasma, while waves launched from the LFS are restricted to the periphery of the plasma. The lower parallel refractive index ( $n\vert \vert $ ) of the waves launched from the HFS yields a higher current drive efficiency as well. The absence of turbulent heat and particle fluxes on the HFS, particularly in double null configuration, makes it the ideal location to minimize PMI damage to the antenna structure. The quiescent scrape off layer (SOL) also eliminates the need to couple LH waves across a long distance to the separatrix, as the antenna can be located close to plasma without risking damage to the structure. The Advanced Divertor eXperiment (ADX) will include an LH launcher located on the HFS. The LH system for ADX will make use of the existing infrastructure from Alcator C-Mod, including sixteen 250-kW klystrons at 4.6 GHz (total source power of 4 MW), high-voltage power supply, and controls. The ADX vacuum vessel design includes dedicated space for waveguide runs, pressure windows, and vacuum feedthroughs for accessing the HFS wall. Compact antenna designs based on proven technologies (e.g., multijunction and four-way splitter antennas) fit within the available space on the HFS of the ADX. Wave coupling simulations of these launchers with HFS SOL density profiles showing good coupling can be obtained by adjusting the distance between the separatrix and the HFS wall. Guard limiters on each side of the LH antenna protect the structure during ramp-up, ramp-down, and off-normal events.

Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Plasma Physics and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Plasma Science and Fusion Center have been collaborating on experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST). Presented in this paper are RF, disruption, and thermal stress analyses of EAST antennas. Analyzed are I port four-strap and B port $2 \times 2$ strap antennas, which are currently installed on EAST. As for RF analysis, scattering parameters are checked to make sure that the antennas are loaded, and then electric field parallel to magnetic field are checked to find out if they are below the permissible level. As for disruption analysis, mechanical stresses for both straps with the support box and Faraday screen are obtained. As for thermal stress analysis, temperature and thermal stress for a typical strap and a Faraday tube were presented. All analyses were performed by COMSOL commercial finite-element analysis software package version 5 or 5.2.

Recent advances in selective laser melting (SLM) 3D printing technology allows additive manufacture of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) RF launchers from a new material, Glenn Research Copper 84 (GRCop-84), a Cr2Nb (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) precipitation hardened alloy, in configurations unachievable with conventional machining. Rough surfaces in additive manufactured components are a limiting factor in RF structures. Surface roughness increases RF losses and impedes conditioning by trapping gas and contaminants that induce arcing by evolving from the surface at high power. SLM printed GRCop-84 is post-processed with mass finishing to reduce surface roughness. Wet blasting, vibratory finishing, and chemical etching remove adhered powder grains from SLM printed GRCop-84. Profilometry and scanning electron microscopy were used to quantify resulting surface quality. Chemical etching is examined to remove zinc contamination from wire electrical discharge machining slag prior to vacuum use. Etch rates in SLM printed GRCop-84 are anisotropic, and etch times should be limited to prevent pitting corresponding to the laser hatch pattern. Vibratory mass finishing and mechanical polishing produced surfaces suitable for low RF loss. Use of chemo-mechanical finishing is recommended for the interior of SLM printed structures.

Recent advances in selective laser melting (SLM) 3D printing technology allow additive manufacture of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) RF launchers from a new material, Glenn Research Copper 84 (GRCop-84), a Cr2Nb (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) precipitation hardened alloy, in configurations unachievable with conventional machining. Tensile strength and thermal conductivity are compared to other competing high conductivity copper alloys for fusion use. Swelling and conductivity at 100 DPA when exposed to the Hanford Fast Flux Test Facility neutron spectrum is predicted in the 1–2 % and 65−70% IACS range, respectively, by comparison to copper alloys with similar precipitate and grain size. Self-similar ion irradiation of a GRCop-84 target at 430 °C to 20 DPA resulted in no noticeable void formation in FIB cross sections or TEM lamella.

Efficient lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) is demonstrated at densities up to n[over ¯]_{e}≈1.5×10^{20} m^{-3} in diverted plasmas on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak by operating at increased plasma current-and therefore reduced Greenwald density fraction. This density exceeds the nominal "LH density limit" at n[over ¯]_{e}≈1.0×10^{20} m^{-3} reported previously, above which an anomalous loss of current drive efficiency was observed. The recovery of current drive efficiency to a level consistent with engineering scalings is correlated with a reduction in density shoulders and turbulence levels in the far scrape-off layer. Concurrently, rf wave interaction with the edge and/or scrape-off-layer plasma is reduced, as indicated by a minimal broadening of the wave frequency spectrum measured at the plasma edge. These results have important implications for sustaining steady-state tokamak operation and indicate a pathway forward for implementing efficient LHCD in a reactor.

This paper presents investigations on the role of the edge ion heat flux for transitions from L-mode to H-mode in Alcator C-Mod. Previous results from the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak indicated that a critical value of edge ion heat flux per particle is needed for the transition. Analysis of C-Mod data confirms this result. The edge ion heat flux is indeed found to increase linearly with density at given magnetic field and plasma current. Furthermore, the Alcator C-Mod data indicate that the edge ion heat flux at the L-H transition also increases with magnetic field. Combining the data from Alcator C-Mod and ASDEX Upgrade yields a general expression for the edge ion heat flux at the L-H transition. These results are discussed from the point of view of the possible physics mechanism of the L-H transition. They are also compared to the L-H power threshold scaling and an extrapolation for ITER is given.

The lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) system on Alcator C-Mod is capable of sustaining fully non-inductive discharges for multiple current relaxation times (τ cr ∼ 200 ms) at line averaged densities in the range of 5x10 19 m -3 . Some of these non-inductive discharges develop unstable MHD modes that can greatly reduce current drive performance, particularly in discharges with plasma current of 0.5 MA or less [1,2]. Avoiding these unstable MHD modes motivated an experiment to test if the stable current profile shape of a higher current non-inductive discharge could be achieved in a lower current discharge. Starting from a discharge at 0.8 MA, the plasma current was ramped down to 0.5 MA over 200 ms. The surface voltage of the plasma swings negative during the ramp, with the loop voltage reversal impacting the edge fast electron measurements immediately. Little change can be seen during the I p ramp in the core fast electron measurements, indicating that the loop voltage reversal does not penetrate fully to the magnetic axis on the timescale of the current ramp. The resulting discharge did not exhibit deleterious MHD instabilities, however the existence of this one discharge does not necessarily represent a robust solution to the problem., United States. The experiments were carried out to study the coupling characteristics of the I-port antenna in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) in EAST. The dependencies of the coupling resistance on various parameters including the antenna position, the central electron density, gas injection and the antenna phasing have been studied. The results obtained show that the experimental data are consistent with theoretical simulations. We find that the antenna loading decreases sharply at the L-H transition due to the change of the plasma density profiles in the scrape-off layer (SOL). The effect of the low hybrid wave (LHW) on the ICRF coupling during the H-mode is observed. The theoretical interpretation of the results is discussed, together with the efficient methods to optimize the coupling efficiency.

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. An iterative method of estimating permittivity and window thickness with high precision is developed for half wavelength resonant waveguide windows for use in a lower hybrid launcher for DIII-D. The high Q factor of half-wavelength windows results in extreme sensitivity of return loss on small deviations in permittivity. Permittivity and loss tangent measurements of Morgan AL-995 99.5% aluminum oxide ceramic using a waveguide resonant cavity per ASTM D2520-13 determine variation of permittivity with frequency. Measurement of window resonant frequency in conjunction with the slope of permittivity from waveguide cavity measurements determine required thickness of a resonant window within 5 MHz of the desired resonant frequency. Methods to improve measurement accuracy of resonant peaks on a vector network analyzer are discussed. A sensitivity study to dimensional variations in window or sample rod geometry, and shift in resonant frequency due to RF heating of the window material is conducted.

This work reports observations of a tokamak plasma that experienced a thermal quench due to a large, transient high-Z influx but avoided a current quench. This is argued to be caused by the presence of lower hybrid range of frequency (LHRF) waves that sustain a non-thermal, current-carrying electron population. In Alcator C-Mod L-mode plasmas at kA, m?3, nearly all of the current can be sustained non-inductively by injecting 700 kW of LHRF power at 4.6 GHz and . A sudden influx of a large amount of tungsten, , triggers a cooling wave that propagates at 2?3 m s?1 all the way into the core, dropping on-axis T e from 3 keV to temperatures less than measurement floor of 50?eV. An off-axis reheat begins after 100?ms, but T e profiles remain hollow for 300?350?ms after the injection. Throughout this temperature evolution, the plasma density, current and shape remain unchanged to within 10%. Following the expulsion of the tungsten, the plasma returns to its baseline conditions and the plasma ends as planned with a controlled current ramp-down. Energy balance analysis shows the LHRF power continues to be absorbed in the plasma after the thermal quench, as a significant fraction of it is needed to be consistent with radiated power measurements. Examination of current relaxation time, , and fast-electron slowing down time, , indicate the LHRF must contribute to driving current, despite the low temperatures, as the current remains nominally stationary despite ms and ms for relativistic electrons. These measurements represent an important existence proof of a possible technique for avoidance of disruptions caused by sudden, unplanned influx of impurities in the form of dust or flakes of high-Z wall material. Implications and suggestions for future experimental and modeling and simulation work are summarized.

Radio frequency (RF) sheath rectification is a leading mechanism suspected of causing anomalously high erosion of plasma facing materials in RF-heated plasmas on Alcator C-Mod. An extensive experimental survey of the plasma potential (Φ[subscript P]) in RF-heated discharges on C-Mod reveals that significant Φ[subscript P] enhancement (>100 V) is found on outboard limiter surfaces, both mapped and not mapped to active RF antennas. Surfaces that magnetically map to active RF antennas show Φ[subscript P] enhancement that is, in part, consistent with the recently proposed slow wave rectification mechanism. Surfaces that do not map to active RF antennas also experience significant Φ[subscript P] enhancement, which strongly correlates with the local fast wave intensity. One of the primary challenges of auxiliary heating of tokamaks in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) is the reduction of impurities associated with ICRF operation. On Alcator C-Mod, a new magnetic field-aligned antenna was optimized for magnetic flux coupling, power handling, and minimized integrated parallel electric field (E∥). Initial simulations performed using both slab and cylindrical geometry suggested nearly complete cancellation of E∥ in front of the antenna structure for certain toroidal phasings. Using toroidal models, the cancellation of E∥ is more modest, suggesting 3-D geometrical effects are important. Using finite element method simulations with a 3-D toroidal cold plasma model, multiple antenna phases were analyzed: [0, π, 0, π], [0, 0, π, π], [0, π, π, 0], [0, 0, 0, 0], [0, π/6, 0, π/6], and [0, π/2, π, 3π/2]. In each case, the field-aligned antenna had reduced integrated E∥ relative to the existing non-aligned antenna geometry, with the greatest reduction for monopole [0, 0, 0, 0] phasing.

The physics that sets the width of the power exhaust channel in a tokamak scrape-off layer and its scaling with engineering parameters is of fundamental importance for reactor design, yet it remains to be understood. An extensive array of divertor heat flux diagnostics was recently commissioned in Alcator C-Mod with the aim of improving our understanding. Initial results are reported from EDA H-mode discharges in which plasma current, input power, toroidal field and magnetic topology were varied. The integral width of the outer divertor heat flux footprint is found to lie in the range of 3–5 mm mapped to the mid-plane. Widths are insensitive to single versus double-null topology and the magnitude of toroidal field. Pedestal physics appears to largely determine these widths; a dependence of width on plasma thermal energy is noted, yielding a reduction in width as plasma current is increased for the best EDA H-modes.

An ion sensitive probe (ISP) is developed as a robust diagnostic for measuring plasma potentials ( Φ P ) in magnetized plasmas of Alcator C-Mod. The ISP relies on the large difference between the ion and electron gyro-radii ( ρ i / ρ e ∼ 60) to reduce electron collection at a collector recessed at a distance ∼ ρ i behind a separately biased wall. We develop a new ISP method based on voltage sweeping to measure Φ P that is independent of the precise position and shape of the collector: Φ P is found to be the wall voltage when net current to the collector vanishes during an increasing voltage sweep. We have designed and installed an ISP to study Φ P and radio frequency (RF) sheath rectification on Alcator C-Mod. Preliminary results show that the ISP is a viable plasma potential diagnostic in Alcator C-Mod plasmas and Φ P measurements are in good agreement with independent results obtained with an emissive probe.

Recent Alcator C-Mod experiments have explored access to and characteristics of H-modes at magnetic fields approaching 8 T, the highest field achieved to date in a diverted tokamak. The H-modes originated from L-mode densities ranging from to , allowing insight into the density dependence of the H-mode power threshold at high magnetic field. This dependence is compared to predictions from the ITPA scaling law ([1]), finding that the law is approximately accurate at 7.8 T. However, the law underpredicted the high density H-mode threshold at lower magnetic field in previous C-Mod experiments ([2]), suggesting that the overall dependence of the threshold on magnetic field is weaker than predicted by the scaling law. The threshold data at 7.8 T also indicates that the onset of a low density branch at this magnetic field on C-Mod occurs below , which is lower than predicted by an existing model for low density branch onset. The H-modes achieved steady-state densities ranging from to , and higher transient densities, and had values of q 95 from 3.3 to 6.0. This parameter range allowed the achievement of all three types of H-mode routinely observed at lower magnetic field on C-Mod: the stationary, ELM-suppressed Enhanced D α (EDA) regime, seen at high densities and high values of q 95; the nonstationary ELM-free regime, seen at lower densities and values of q 95; and the ELMy regime, seen at low density, moderate q 95, and specialized plasma shape. The parameter space in which these regimes occur at 7.8 T is consistent with lower magnetic field experience. Pressure pedestal height at 7.8 T is compared to EPED [3, 4] predictions, and a scaling law for EDA density pedestal height developed between 4.5 T and 6.0 T is updated to include fields from 2.7 T to 7.8 T. Overall, this analysis increases confidence in the use of low magnetic field experience to predict some elements of high magnetic field tokamak behavior.

In Alcator C-Mod, we have sought to identify ICRF specific impurity sources and estimate the lifetime of thin, low-Z films in the presence of high power ICRF heating. With ICRF, the erosion rate of low-Z films is estimated to be 15–20 nm/s indicating the eroding species energy is much higher than that normally found in the SOL. Using emissive probes, plasma potential measurements confirm the presence of an enhanced sheath with ICRF when the probe is magnetically linked to the active antenna. Plasma potentials were typically 100–200 V for ∼1.25 MW injected ICRF power. Furthermore, an RF sheath was unexpectedly present with insulating limiters and was dependent on the wall conditions and plasma confinement. These dependencies suggest that other scrape-off layer and plasma-surface characteristics are influencing the resulting RF sheaths.

A real-time ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) antenna matching system has been successfully implemented on Alcator C-Mod. This is a triple-stub tuning system working at 80 MHz, where one stub acts as a pre-matching stub and the other two stubs use fast ferrite tuners (FFTs) to accomplish fast tuning. It utilizes a digital controller for feedback control (200 μs per iteration) using real-time antenna loading measurements as inputs and the coil currents to the FFT as outputs. The system has achieved and maintained matching for a large range of plasma parameters, including L-mode, H-mode, and plasmas with edge localized modes. It has succeeded in delivering up to 1.85 MW net rf power into H-mode plasmas at maximum voltage of 37 kV on the unmatched side of the matching system.

The control of the hydrogen fraction in D plasmas [H/(H+D)] is necessary for efficient ICRF minority heating in Alcator C-Mod. Boronizing the chamber when H/(H+D) ∼ 10% would promptly lower H/(H+D) to ∼5%. However, the reduction was transitory when the accumulated boron layer was thick (>6 μm) and with boron nitride tiles protecting the ICRF antennas, indicating that the H buried under a new B layer diffused back to the surface over time. Prior to the 2005 campaign, all boron on molybdenum tiles and surfaces was removed. Boronization was performed only after H/(H+D) was down to

Characteristics of discrete ELMs produced in Alcator C-Mod discharges of low edge collisionality (0.2 4.5 cm. The initial filaments are followed (at intervals of ∼100 μs) by multiple, less perturbing secondary filaments.

We report the results of operation of Alcator C-Mod with all high- Z molybdenum plasma facing component (PFC) surfaces. Without boron-coated PFCs energy confinement was poor ( H ITER,89 ∼ 1) due to high core molybdenum ( n Mo / n e ⩽ 0.1%) and radiation. After applying boron coatings, n Mo / n e was reduced by a factor of 10–20 with H ITER,89 approaching 2. Results of between-discharge boronization, localized at various major radii, point towards important molybdenum source regions being small, outside the divertor, and due to RF-sheath-rectification. Boronization also has a significant effect on the plasma startup phase lowering Z eff , radiation, and lowering the runaway electron damage. The requirement of low- Z coatings over at least a fraction of the Mo PFCs in C-Mod for best performance together with the larger than expected D retention in Mo, give impetus for further high- Z PFC investigations to better predict the performance of un-coated tungsten surfaces in ITER and beyond.

Energetic minority protons with ~100 keV effective temperature are routinely created in Alcator C-Mod plasmas with the application of ion-cyclotron-range-of-frequency (ICRF) heating. A multichannel compact neutral particle analyzer (CNPA) is used to make measurements of these distributions in Alcator C-Mod's unique and reactor-relevant operating space via active and passive charge-exchange techniques. A radially injected 50 keV diagnostic hydrogen neutral beam is used for active analysis. Using a detailed model that accounts for beam, halo and impurity electron donors, core proton temperatures of ~30–120 keV are directly measured for the first time in lower density (ne0 ~ (0.8–1.5) × 1020 m−3) Alcator C-Mod plasmas with up to only ~0.5 MW of ICRF power. The model found that the minority proton temperatures are peaked spatially away from r/a = 0, even for an on-axis resonance. Additionally, noticeable phase-space anisotropy is seen as expected for ICRF heating. The measured effective temperatures also scale approximately with the Stix parameter. The CNPA temperature measurements are compared with several leading simulation packages such as the TORIC/FPPRF and AORSA/CQL3D full-wave/Fokker–Planck (FW/FP) solvers. Preliminary comparisons with the AORSA/CQL3D code which include results from a new synthetic diagnostic show good agreement and demonstrate that accurate tracking of the minority distribution during iterations of the FW and FP solvers is required to simulate Alcator C-Mod's energetic minority populations with accuracy. Physically, poor wave focusing and preferential heating of trapped energetic protons are found to move the fast proton temperature profiles off-axis. These FW/FP analyses represent the first comparison between predictions of these detailed codes and core minority tail experimental measurements on Alcator C-Mod.

An overview of the diagnostics installed on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak is presented. Approximately 25 diagnostic systems are being operated on C-Mod. The compact design of the machine and the cryostat enclosing the vacuum vessel and magnetic field coils make access challenging. Diagnostics are used to study four focus areas: transport, plasma boundary, waves, and macrostability. There is significant overlap between these topics, and they all contribute toward the burning plasma and advanced tokamak thrusts. Several advanced and novel diagnostics contribute to the investigation of C-Mod plasmas, e.g., electron cyclotron emission, phase-contrast imaging, gas puff imaging, probe measurements, and active magnetohydrodynamic antennas.

Significant changes in the sawtooth period have been observed on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak during phased ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) operation in the mode conversion regime. As the mode conversion layer was swept outwards through the q = 1 surface in D(3He) plasmas, the sawtooth period was found to increase and then decrease for counter-current drive phasing. For co-current drive and heating phasings, it was observed to decrease and then increase. With 2 MW ICRF power, the period varied from 3 to 12 ms. The observed evolution is consistent with localized current drive by mode converted waves in the vicinity of the q = 1 surface. Simulations with the full wave code TORIC indicate that the electron heating and current drive are due to mode converted ion cyclotron waves. The observed evolution for symmetric (heating) phasing is difficult to attribute to localized heating, since temperature profile stiffness prohibits large changes in the resistivity gradient at the q = 1 surface. An alternative explanation is found in TORIC simulations, which predict co-current drive for symmetric phasing due to a strong up-down asymmetry in the ICW wave field.

This paper describes the analysis following the breakdown of an ICRF tuner purchased from AFT. The codes used in the analysis were CST and COMSOL. These codes use the standard gyromagnetic model for the ferrite which gives results that are largely in error when compared to measurements at ICRF and Lower Hybrid frequencies. We have measured a slab of the ferrite used in the ICRF tuner provided by AFT and from these measurements we have constructed a tabular model of the ferrite and inserted it into the COMSOL code. The results give performance which closely agrees with the performance specifications issued by AFT. We then used this modified code to correlate the simulation with the destructive evidence found in the tuner. The correlation was good between the destruction spot and the peak of the standing electric field. Pictures of the destruction and the heating in the tuner and the standing field results from the simulation will be given.

The Advanced Divertor and RF tokamak eXperiment (ADX) is a compact, high-field device proposed by the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center and collaborators [1], which will address critical gaps in world fusion research on the pathway to fusion energy. In addition to developing and testing new divertor concepts at reactor level magnetic field strengths and power densities, ADX will test new antenna concepts for Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) and Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency (ICRF) heating systems. In particular, ADX will be purpose-built to allow antennas to be positioned on the high magnetic field side of the torus, i.e., on the inner wall. With antennas placed at this location, plasma-wall interactions are greatly reduced and favorable RF wave physics projects to dramatic improvements in current drive efficiency and current profile control as well as very effective scenarios for RF heating and flow drive [2][3][4]. Initial designs for a high field side LHCD and ICRF antennas have been completed and are analyzed to determine the loads induced during a full-current plasma disruption. While locating antennas at the inner wall is beneficial from an RF standpoint, it exposes them to a higher toroidal field which, when combined with the eddy currents caused by a disrupting plasma, will lead to higher loads. Using COMSOL Multiphysics [5], a model of the ADX vessel and coils is created to predict the magnetic fields, eddy currents and loads acting on the antennas during a disruption. Structural models are then run to predict the stresses and to provide guidance for design improvement, such as determining where structural reinforcements may be necessary.

Mode conversion of fast waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) is known to result in current drive and flow drive under optimised conditions, which may be utilized to control plasma profiles and improve fusion plasma performance. To describe these processes accurately in a realistic toroidal geometry, numerical simulations are essential. Quantitative comparison of these simulations and the actual experimental measurements is important to validate their predictions and to evaluate their limitations. The phase contrast imaging (PCI) diagnostic has been used to directly detect the ICRF waves in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. The measurements have been compared with full-wave simulations through a synthetic diagnostic technique. Recently, the frequency response of the PCI detector array on Alcator C-Mod was recalibrated, which greatly improved the comparison between the measurements and the simulations. In this study, mode converted waves for D-{superscript 3]He and D-H plasmas with various ion species compositions were re-analyzed with the new calibration. For the minority heating cases, self-consistent electric fields and a minority ion distribution function were simulated by iterating a full-wave code and a Fokker-Planck code. The simulated mode converted wave intensity was in quite reasonable agreement with the measurements close to the antenna, but discrepancies remain for comparison at larger distances., United States.
