Glaciers and rock glaciers play an important role in the hydrology of the semi-arid northern Chile. Several studies show that glaciers have rapidly lost mass in response to climate change during the last decades. The response of rock glaciers to climate change in this region is, however, less known. In this study we use a combination of historical aerial photography, stereo satellite imagery, airborne lidar, and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM to report glacier changes for the Tapado Glacier–rock glacier complex from the 1950s to 2020 and to report mass balances for the glacier component of the complex, Tapado Glacier. Furthermore, we examine high-resolution elevation changes and surface velocities between 2012 and 2020 for 35 rock glaciers in the La Laguna catchment. Our results show how Tapado Glacier has shrunk by -25.2±4.6 % between 1956 and 2020, while the mass balance of Tapado Glacier has become steadily more negative, from being approximately in balance between 1956 and 1978 (-0.04±0.08 m w.e. a−1) to showing increased losses between 2015 and 2020 (-0.32±0.08 m w.e. a−1). Climatological (re-)analyses reveal a general increase in air temperature, decrease in humidity, and variable precipitation since the 1980s in the region. In particular, the severe droughts starting in 2010 resulted in a negative mass balance of -0.54±0.10 m w.e. a−1 between 2012 and 2015. The rock glaciers within the La Laguna catchment show heterogenous changes, with some sections of landforms exhibiting pronounced elevation changes and surface velocities exceeding that of Tapado Glacier. This could be indicative of high ice contents within the landforms and also highlights the importance of considering how landforms can transition from more glacial landforms to more periglacial features under permafrost conditions. As such, we believe high-resolution (sub-metre) elevation changes and surface velocities are a useful first step for identifying ice-rich landforms.

In this study, rapid topographic changes and high creeping rates caused by the destabilisation of an active rock glacier in a steep mountain flank were investigated in detail with five unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys between June 2016 and September 2017. State-of-the-art photogrammetric techniques were employed to derived high-density point clouds and high-resolution orthophoto mosaics from the studied landform. The accuracy of the co-registration of subsequent point clouds was carefully examined and adjusted based on comparing stable areas outside the rock glacier, which minimised 3-D alignment errors to a mean of 0.12 m. Elevation and volumetric changes in the destabilised rock glacier were quantified over the study period. Surface kinematics were estimated with a combination of image correlation algorithms and visual inspection of the orthophoto mosaics. Between June 2016 and September 2017, the destabilised part of the rock glacier advanced up to 60–75 m and mobilised a volume of around 27 000 m3 of material which was dumped over the lower talus slope. This study has demonstrated a robust and customisable monitoring approach that allows a detailed study of rock glacier geometric changes during a crisis phase.

Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most common diseases in children and an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. No specific treatment is available; therefore, management is exclusively symptomatic. Xyloglucan has been approved in Europe as a class IIa medical device for restoration of the physiological functions of the intestinal wall. Our objective was to assess efficacy and safety of xyloglucan for the treatment of acute gastroenteritis in children. We performed a triple-blind, randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial in four primary care centers and one continued care hospital center. The study population comprised children with acute gastroenteritis aged >3 months and <5 years. Our primary endpoint was time (in hours) of resolution of diarrhea, defined as the time to resolution of stool consistency (Bristol Stool Form Scale ≤5 or Amsterdam Stool Form Scale B or C) or time until deposition frequency resumes to normality, whichever occurred first. We also recorded intravenous rehydration, hospitalization, stools per day, Vesikari scale, vomiting, relapse, weight loss, drugs prescribed, and adverse events. Eighty children were included in the intention-to-treat population (43 xyloglucan and 37 placebo) and 74 (93%) in the per-protocol population. Time to resolution of diarrhea was similar in both groups with (median, 95% CI) 24, 17-24 h in the xyloglucan group versus 24, 19-24 h in the placebo group, p  = .680. Significant differences were observed for patients with moderate-to-severe diarrhea (Vesikari scale ≥9): xyloglucan group (20 [15-24] h) versus placebo group (85 [51-120] h) ( p  = .04). No other significant differences were found. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of life to promote adequate infant growth and development, and to reduce infant morbidity and mortality. However, whenever some mothers are not able to breastfeed their infants, infant formulas mimicking human milk are needed, and the safety and efficacy of each formula should be tested. Here, we report the results of a multicenter, randomized, blinded, controlled clinical trial that aimed to evaluate a novel starting formula on weight gain and body composition of infants up to 6 and 12 months, as well as safety and tolerability. For the intervention period, infants were divided into three groups: group 1 received formula 1 (Nutribén ® Innova 1 (Alter Farmacia S.A., Madrid, Spain) or INN ( n = 70)), with a lower amount of protein, a lower casein to whey protein ratio by increasing the content of α-lactalbumin, and a double amount of docosahexaenoic acid/arachidonic acid than the standard formula; it also contained a thermally inactivated postbiotic ( Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis , BPL1 TM HT). Group 2 received the standard formula or formula 2 (Nutriben ® Natal (Alter Farmacia S.A., Madrid, Spain) or STD ( n = 70)) and the third group was exclusively breastfed for exploratory analysis and used as a reference (BFD group ( n = 70)). During the study, visits were made at 21 days and 2, 4, 6, and 12 months of age. Weight gain was higher in both formula groups than in the BFD group at 6 and 12 months, whereas no differences were found between STD and INN groups either at 6 or at 12 months. Likewise, body mass index was higher in infants fed the two formulas compared with the BFD group. Regarding body composition, length, head circumference and tricipital/subscapular skinfolds were alike between groups. The INN formula was considered safe as weight gain and body composition were within the normal limits, according to WHO standards. The BFD group exhibited more liquid consistency in the stools compared to both formula groups. All groups showed similar digestive tolerance and infant behavior. However, a higher frequency of gastrointestinal symptoms was reported by the STD formula group ( n = 291), followed by the INN formula ( n = 282), and the BFD groups ( n = 227). There were fewer respiratory, thoracic, and mediastinal disorders among BFD children. Additionally, infants receiving the INN formula experienced significantly fewer general disorders and disturbances than those receiving the STD formula. Indeed, atopic dermatitis, bronchitis, and bronchiolitis were significantly more prevalent among infants who were fed the STD formula compared to those fed the INN formula or breastfed. To evaluate whether there were significant differences between formula treatments, beyond growth parameters, it would seem necessary to examine more precise health biomarkers and to carry out long-term longitudinal studies.

We describe an effective surgical approach for the management of cilioretinal artery occlusion. A 23-G pars plana vitrectomy assisted with two soft tip cannulas was performed. One cannula pressed the cilioretinal artery branch directed toward the macula, distal to the location of the embolus, whereas the other cannula was used to gently swipe over the cilioretinal artery proximal to the occlusion. Anatomical and functional outcomes were evaluated by fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, Goldmann visual field, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). It was possible to mobilize the embolus by mechanical displacement with 23-G soft-tip cannulas and disintegrate it, preventing the passage toward the branch directed to the macula. Restoration of retinal circulation was confirmed by fluorescein angiogram. The patient recovered his previous documented BCVA and visual field. The described technique can be considered as a new possibility for achieving a solution to cilioretinal artery occlusion or any other retinal artery occlusion., Competing Interests: None

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new pediculicide in the eradication of Pediculus humanus capitis infestation., Material and Methods: A randomised clinical trial was designed, in which children aged between 5 and 15 years diagnosed with pediculosis were selected. Treatment was administered on days 1 and 7 after selection, and they were evaluated in 4 visits (day 2, 7, 9, and 14). The product under evaluation with saponified olive oil was Inex Pediculicide Soap ® , which was compared with Paranix ® , with a similar mechanism of action. The primary efficacy endpoint was the eradication of the parasite by day 14 (louse-free rate), using an intention to treat analysis., Results: Six paediatricians from 5 Primary Health Care centres in the Community of Madrid (Spain) and one private clinic participated in the study. A total of 45 children were included, of which 75.6% were girls (n=34). The mean age was 7.1 years (95% CI 6.3-7.9). The large majority (80%) were middle class, and 82.2% had a history of previous pediculosis. The efficacy at 14 days was 76.2% (95% CI 52.8-91.8) in the group treated with Inex Pediculicide Soap ® group, and 79.2% (95% CI 57.9-92.9) in Paranix ® group (NNT=33.3).
