Search

Supernova remnants (SNRs) contribute to regulate the star formation efficiency and evolution of galaxies. As they expand into the interstellar medium (ISM), they transfer vast amounts of energy and momentum that displace, compress and heat the surrounding material. Despite the extensive work in galaxy evolution models, it remains to be observationally validated to what extent the molecular ISM is affected by the interaction with SNRs. We use the first results of the ESO-ARO Public Spectroscopic Survey SHREC, to investigate the shock interaction between the SNR IC443 and the nearby molecular clump G. We use high sensitivity SiO(2-1) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$(1-0) maps obtained by SHREC together with SiO(1-0) observations obtained with the 40m telescope at the Yebes Observatory. We find that the bulk of the SiO emission is arising from the ongoing shock interaction between IC443 and clump G. The shocked gas shows a well ordered kinematic structure, with velocities blue-shifted with respect to the central velocity of the SNR, similar to what observed toward other SNR-cloud interaction sites. The shock compression enhances the molecular gas density, n(H$_2$), up to $>$10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$, a factor of >10 higher than the ambient gas density and similar to values required to ignite star formation. Finally, we estimate that up to 50\% of the momentum injected by IC443 is transferred to the interacting molecular material. Context. Protostellar jets are an important agent of star formation feedback, tightly connected with the mass-accretion process. The history of jet formation and mass ejection provides constraints on the mass accretion history and on the nature of the driving source. Aims. We characterize the time-variability of the mass-ejection phenomena at work in the class 0 protostellar phase in order to better understand the dynamics of the outflowing gas and bring more constraints on the origin of the jet chemical composition and the mass accretion history. Methods. Using the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) interferometer, we have observed the emission of the CO 2–1 and SO NJ = 54–43 rotational transitions at an angular resolution of 1.0 00 (820 au) and 0.400 (330 au), respectively, toward the intermediate mass class 0 protostellar system Cep E. Results. The CO high-velocity jet emission reveals a central component of ≤400 au diameter associated with high-velocity molecular knots that is also detected in SO, surrounded by a collimated layer of entrained gas. The gas layer appears to be accelerated along the main axis over a length scale δ0 ∼ 700 au, while its diameter gradually increases up to several 1000 au at 2000 au from the protostar. The jet is fragmented into 18 knots of mass ∼10−3 M, unevenly distributed between the northern and southern lobes, with velocity variations up to 15 km s−1 close to the protostar. This is well below the jet terminal velocities in the northern (+65 km s−1) and southern (-125 km s-1)lobes. The knot interval distribution is approximately bimodal on a timescale of ∼50–80 yr, which is close to the jet driving protostar Cep E-A and ∼150−20 yr at larger distances >1200. The mass-loss rates derived from knot masses are steady overall, with values of 2.7 x 10−5 M yr−1 and 8.9 x 10−6 M yr−1 in the northern and southern lobe, respectively. Conclusions. The interaction of the ambient protostellar material with high-velocity knots drives the formation of a molecular layer around the jet. This accounts for the higher mass-loss rate in the northern lobe. Recent observations of the pre-stellar core L1544 and the younger starless core L1498 have revealed that complex organic molecules (COMs) are enhanced in the gas phase toward their outer and intermediate-density shells. Our goal is to determine the level of chemical complexity toward the starless core L1517B, which seems younger than L1498, and compare it with the other two previously studied cores to see if there is a chemical evolution within the cores. We have carried out 3 mm high-sensitivity observations toward two positions in the L1517B starless core: the core's centre and the position where the methanol emission peaks (at a distance of $\sim$5000 au from the core's centre). Our observations reveal that a lower number of COMs and COM precursors are detected in L1517B with respect to L1498 and L1544, and also show lower abundances. Besides methanol, we only detected CH$_3$O, H$_2$CCO, CH$_3$CHO, CH$_3$CN, CH$_3$NC, HCCCN, and HCCNC. Their measured abundances are $\sim$3 times larger toward the methanol peak than toward the core's centre, mimicking the behaviour found toward the more evolved cores L1544 and L1498. We propose that the differences in the chemical complexity observed between the three studied starless cores are a consequence of their evolution, with L1517B being the less evolved one, followed by L1498 and L1544. Chemical complexity in these cores seems to increase over time, with N-bearing molecules forming first and O-bearing COMs forming at a later stage as a result of the catastrophic depletion of CO., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

[Context] Methanol masers of Class I (collisionally pumped) and Class II (radiatively pumped) have been studied in great detail in our Galaxy in a variety of astrophysical environments such as shocks and star-forming regions and are they are helpful to analyze the properties of the dense interstellar medium. However, the study of methanol masers in external galaxies is still in its infancy., [Aims] Our main goal is to search for methanol masers in the central molecular zone (CMZ; inner 500 pc) of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253., [Methods] Covering a frequency range between 84 and 373 GHz (λ = 3.6–0.8 mm) at high angular (1.″6 ∼ 27 pc) and spectral (∼8–9 km s−1) resolution with ALCHEMI (ALMA Comprehensive High-resolution Extragalactic Molecular Inventory), we have probed different regions across the CMZ of NGC 253. In order to look for methanol maser candidates, we employed the rotation diagram method and a set of radiative transfer models., [Results] We detect for the first time masers above 84 GHz in NGC 253, covering an ample portion of the J−1 → (J − 1)0 − E line series (at 84, 132, 229, and 278 GHz) and the J0 → (J − 1)1 − A series (at 95, 146, and 198 GHz). This confirms the presence of the Class I maser line at 84 GHz, which was already reported, but now being detected in more than one location. For the J−1 → (J− 1)0 − E line series, we observe a lack of Class I maser candidates in the central star-forming disk., [Conclusions] The physical conditions for maser excitation in the J−1 → (J − 1)0 − E line series can be weak shocks and cloud-cloud collisions as suggested by shock tracers (SiO and HNCO) in bi-symmetric shock regions located in the outskirts of the CMZ. Molecular line emission is a powerful probe of the physical conditions of astrophysical objects but can be complex to model, and it is often unclear which transitions would be the best targets for observers who wish to constrain a given parameter. We therefore produce a list of molecular species for which the gas history can be ignored, removing a major modelling complexity. We then determine the best of these species to observe when attempting to constrain various physical parameters. To achieve this, we use a large set of chemical models with different chemical histories to determine which species have abundances at 1 MYr that are insensitive to the initial conditions. We then use radiative transfer modelling to produce the intensity of every transition of these molecules. We finally compute the mutual information between the physical parameters and all transitions and transition ratios in order to rank their usefulness in determining the value of a given parameter. We find 48 species that are insensitive to the chemical history of the gas, 23 of which have collisional data available. We produce a ranked list of all the transitions and ratios of these species using their mutual information with various gas properties. We show mutual information is an adequate measure of how well a transition can constrain a physical parameter by recovering known probes and demonstrating that random forest regression models become more accurate predictors when high-scoring features are included. Therefore, this list can be used to select target transitions for observations in order to maximize knowledge about those physical parameters., 9 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A. C. Vastel et al., [Aims] Methanol is a ubiquitous species commonly found in the molecular interstellar medium. It is also a crucial seed species for the build-up of chemical complexity in star forming regions. Thus, understanding how its abundance evolves during the star formation process and whether it enriches the emerging planetary system is of paramount importance., [Methods] We used new data from the ALMA Large Program FAUST (Fifty AU STudy of the chemistry in the disc/envelope system of solar protostars) to study the methanol line emission towards the [BHB2007] 11 protobinary system (sources A and B), where a complex structure of filaments connecting the two sources with a larger circumbinary disc has previously been detected., [Results] Twelve methanol lines have been detected with upper energies in the [45–537] K range along with one 13CH3OH transition and one methyl formate (CH3OCHO) line blended with one of the methanol transitions. The methanol emission is compact (FWHM ~ 0.5″) and encompasses both protostars, which are separated by only 0.2″ (28 au). In addition, the overall methanol line emission presents three velocity components, which are not spatially resolved by our observations. Nonetheless, a detailed analysis of the spatial origin of these three components suggests that they are associated with three different spatial regions, with two of them close to 11B and the third one associated with 11A. A radiative transfer analysis of the methanol lines gives a kinetic temperature of [100–140] K, an H2 volume density of 106–107 cm−3 and column density of a few 1018 cm−2 in all three components with a source size of ~0.15″. Thus, this hot and dense gas is highly enriched in methanol with an abundance as high as 10−5. Using previous continuum data, we show that dust opacity can potentially completely absorb the methanol line emission from the two binary objects., [Conclusions] Although we cannot firmly exclude other possibilities, we suggest that the detected hot methanol is resulting from the shocked gas from the incoming filaments streaming towards [BHB2007] 11A and B, respectively. Molecular line ratios, such as HCN(1-0)/HCO$^+$(1-0) and HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6), are routinely used to identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in galaxies. Such ratios are, however, hard to interpret as they are highly dependent on the physics and energetics of the gas, and hence can seldom be used as a unique, unambiguous diagnostic. We used the composite galaxy NGC 1068 as a `laboratory' to investigate whether molecular line ratios between HCN, HCO$^+$, and CS are useful tracers of AGN-dominated gas and determine the origin of the differences in such ratios across different types of gas. Such a determination will enable a more rigorous use of such ratios. First, we empirically examined the aforementioned ratios at different angular resolutions to quantify correlations. We then used local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE analyses coupled with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling in order to determine the origin of the underlying differences in ratios. We propose that at high spatial resolution (< 50 pc) the HCN(4-3)/CS(2-1) is a reliable tracer of AGN activity. We also find that the variations in ratios are not a consequence of different densities or temperature but of different fractional abundances, yielding to the important result that it is essential to consider the chemical processes at play when drawing conclusions from radiative transfer calculations. From analyses at varying spatial scales, we find that previously proposed molecular line ratios, as well as a new one, have varying levels of consistency. Phosphorus (P) is a crucial element for life given its central role in several biomolecules. P-bearing molecules have been discovered in different regions of the Milky Way, but not yet towards an extragalactic environment. We have searched for P-bearing molecules towards the nearby starburst Galaxy NGC 253. Using observations from the ALMA Comprehensive High-resolution Extragalactic Molecular Inventory (ALCHEMI) project, we used the MADCUBA package to model the emission of P-bearing molecules assuming Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) conditions. We have also performed a non-LTE analysis using SpectralRadex. We report the detection of a P-bearing molecule, phosphorus nitride (PN), for the first time in an extragalactic environment, towards two giant molecular clouds (GMCs) of NGC 253. The LTE analysis yields total PN beam-averaged column densities $N$=(1.20$\pm$0.09)$\times$10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $N$=(6.5$\pm$1.6)$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, which translate into abundances with respect to H$_2$ of $\chi$=(8.0$\pm$1.0)$\times$10$^{-12}$ and $\chi$=(4.4$\pm$1.2)$\times$10$^{-12}$. We derived a low excitation temperature of $T_{\rm ex}$=(4.4$\pm$1.3) K towards the GMC with the brightest PN emission, which indicates that PN is sub-thermally excited. The non-LTE analysis results in column densities consistent with the LTE values. We have also searched for other P-bearing molecules (PO, PH$_{3}$, CP and CCP), and upper limits were derived. The isotopic ratio of nitrogen presents a wide range of values in the Solar System and in star forming system whose origin is still unclear. Chemical reactions in the gas phase are one of the possible processes that could modify the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratio. We aim at investigating if and how the passage of a shock wave in the interstellar medium, can affect the relative fraction of nitrogen isotopes. The ideal place for such a study is the L1157 outflow, where several shocked clumps are present. We present the first measurement of the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratio in the two shocked clumps, B1 and B0, of the protostellar outflow L1157, derived from the interferomteric maps of the H$^{13}$CN(1-0) and the HC$^{15}$N(1-0) lines. In B1, we find that the H$^{13}$CN(1-0) and HC$^{15}$N(1-0) emission traces the front of the clump, with averaged column density of $N$(H$^{13}$CN) $\sim$ 7$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $N$(HC$^{15}$N) $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. In this region the ratio H$^{13}$CN(1-0)/HC$^{15}$N(1-0) is quite uniform with an average value of $\sim$ 5$\pm$1. The same average value is also measured in the smaller clump B0e. Assuming the standard $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C = 68, we obtain $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N = 340$\pm$70, similar to those usually found in prestellar cores and protostars. We analysed the prediction of a chemical shock model for several shock conditions and we found that the nitrogen and carbon fractionations do not vary much for the first period after the shock. The observed H$^{13}$CN/HC$^{15}$N can be reproduced by a non-dissociative, C-type shock with parameters in agreement with previous modelling of L1157-B1. Both observations and chemical models indicate that the shock propagation does not affect the nitrogen isotopic ratio that remains similar to that measured in lower temperature gas in prestellar cores and in protostellar envelopes., 7 pages, 6 figures

Martín, S., et al., [Context] The interstellar medium is the locus of physical processes affecting the evolution of galaxies which drive or are the result of star formation activity, supermassive black hole growth, and feedback. The resulting physical conditions determine the observable chemical abundances that can be explored through molecular emission observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. [Aims] Our goal is to unveiling the molecular richness of the central region of the prototypical nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 at an unprecedented combination of sensitivity, spatial resolution, and frequency coverage. [Methods] We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), covering a nearly contiguous 289 GHz frequency range between 84.2 and 373.2 GHz, to image the continuum and spectral line emission at 1.6″(∼28 pc) resolution down to a sensitivity of 30 - 50 mK. This article describes the ALMA Comprehensive High-resolution Extragalactic Molecular Inventory (ALCHEMI) large program. We focus on the analysis of the spectra extracted from the 15″ (∼255 pc) resolution ALMA Compact Array data. [Results] We modeled the molecular emission assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium with 78 species being detected. Additionally, multiple hydrogen and helium recombination lines are identified. Spectral lines contribute 5 to 36% of the total emission in frequency bins of 50 GHz. We report the first extragalactic detections of C2H5OH, HOCN, HC3HO, and several rare isotopologues. Isotopic ratios of carbon, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and silicon were measured with multiple species. [Concluison] Infrared pumped vibrationaly excited HCN, HNC, and HC3N emission, originating in massive star formation locations, is clearly detected at low resolution, while we do not detect it for HCO+. We suggest high temperature conditions in these regions driving a seemingly "carbon-rich"chemistry which may also explain the observed high abundance of organic species close to those in Galactic hot cores. The Lvib/LIR ratio was used as a proxy to estimate a 3% contribution from the proto super star cluster to the global infrared emission. Measured isotopic ratios with high dipole moment species agree with those within the central kiloparsec of the Galaxy, while those derived from 13C/18O are a factor of five larger, confirming the existence of multiple interstellar medium components within NGC 253 with different degrees of nucleosynthesis enrichment. The ALCHEMI data set provides a unique template for studies of star-forming galaxies in the early Universe.

Context. Recent results in astrochemistry have revealed that some molecules, such as interstellar complex organic species and deuterated species, can serve as valuable tools in the investigation of star-forming regions. Sulphuretted species can also be used to follow the chemical evolution of the early stages of a Sun-like star formation process. Aims. The goal is to obtain a census of S-bearing species using interferometric images towards SVS13-A, a Class I object associated with a hot corino that is rich in interstellar complex organic molecules. Methods. To this end, we used the NGC 1333 SVS13-A data at 3 mm and 1.4 mm obtained with the IRAM-NOEMA interferometer in the framework of the SOLIS (Seeds of Life in Space) Large Program. The line emission of S-bearing species was imaged and analyzed using local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and large velocity gradient (LVG) approaches. Results. We imaged the spatial distribution on ≤300 au scale of the line emission of 32SO, 34SO, C32S, C34S, C33S, OCS, H2C32S, H2C34S, and NS. The low excitation (9 K) 32SO line traces: (i) the low-velocity SVS13-A outflow and (ii) the fast (up to 100 km s−1 away from the systemic velocity) collimated jet driven by the nearby SVS13-B Class 0 object. Conversely, the rest of the lines are confined in the inner SVS13-A region, where complex organics were previously imaged. More specifically, the non-LTE LVG analysis of SO, SO2, and H2CS indicates a hot corino origin (size in the 60–120 au range). Temperatures between 50 K and 300 K, as well as volume densities larger than 105 cm−3 have been derived. The abundances of the sulphuretted are in the following ranges: 0.3–6 × 10−6 (CS), 7 × 10−9–1 × 10−7 (SO), 1–10 × 10−7 (SO2), a few 10−10 (H2CS and OCS), and 10−10–10−9 (NS). The N(NS)/N(NS+) ratio is larger than 10, supporting the assessment that the NS+ ion is mainly formed in the extended envelope. Conclusions. The [H2CS]/[H2CO] ratio, once measured at high-spatial resolutions, increases with time (from Class 0 to Class II objects) by more than one order of magnitude (from ≤10−2 to a few 10−1). This suggests that [S]/[O] changes along the process of Sun-like star formation. Finally, the estimate of the [S]/[H] budget in SVS13-A is 2–17% of the Solar System value (1.8 × 10−5), which is consistent with what was previously measured towards Class 0 objects (1–8%). This finding supports the notion that the enrichment of the sulphuretted species with respect to dark clouds remains constant from the Class 0 to the Class I stages of low-mass star formation. The present findings stress the importance of investigating the chemistry of star-forming regions using large observational surveys as well as sampling regions on the scale of the Solar System.

In order to understand the evolution and feedback of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and star formation it is important to use molecular lines as probes of physical conditions and chemistry. We use H$_{2}$S to investigate the impact of starburst and AGN activity on the chemistry of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies. Using the APEX single dish telescope, we have observed the $1_{10}$--$1_{01}$ transition of ortho-H$_{2}$S at 168 GHz towards the centres of twelve nearby luminous infrared galaxies. We have also observed the same line towards the ultra luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Mrk~231 with the NOEMA interferometer. We have detected H$_{2}$S towards NGC~253, NGC~1068, NGC~3256, NGC~4418, NGC~4826, NGC~4945, Circinus, M~83 and Mrk~231. Four galaxies show elevated H$_{2}$S emission relative to HCN. We suggest that the high line ratios are caused by elevated H$_{2}$S abundances in the dense gas. However, we do not find any clear connection between the H$_{2}$S/HCN line intensity ratio, and the presence (or speed) of molecular outflows in the sample galaxies. Therefore H$_{2}$S abundances do not seem to be globally affected by the large-scale outflows. We discuss possible mechanisms behind the suggested H$_{2}$S abundance enhancements in NGC~4418, Circinus, NGC~3256 and NGC~4826. These include radiative processes (for example X-rays or cosmic-rays) or smaller scale shocks. We suggest that $L_{\mathrm{H_{2}S}}$ serves as a tracer of the dense gas content, similar to $L_{\mathrm{HCN}}$, and that the correlation between $L_{\mathrm{H_{2}S}}$ and $M_{\rm outflow}$(H$_2$) implies a relation between the dense gas reservoir and the properties and evolution of the molecular feedback. We report on Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert2/starburst galaxy NGC1808, at a spatial resolution of 4pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central 0.5kpc and to probe the nuclear feeding and feedback phenomena. We discovered a nuclear spiral of radius 1"=45pc. Within it, we found a decoupled circumnuclear disk or molecular torus of a radius of 0.13"=6pc. The HCN(4-3) and HCO$\rm^+$(4-3) and CS(7-6) dense gas line tracers were simultaneously mapped and detected in the nuclear spiral and they present the same misalignment in the molecular torus. At the nucleus, the HCN/HCO$^+$ and HCN/CS ratios indicate the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The molecular gas shows regular rotation, within a radius of 400pc, except for the misaligned disk inside the nuclear spiral arms. The computations of the torques exerted on the gas by the barred stellar potential reveal that the gas within a radius of 100pc is feeding the nucleus on a timescale of five rotations or on an average timescale of ~60Myr. Some non-circular motions are observed towards the center, corresponding to the nuclear spiral arms. We cannot rule out that small extra kinematic perturbations could be interpreted as a weak outflow attributed to AGN feedback. The current generation of (sub)mm-telescopes has allowed molecular line emission to become a major tool for studying the physical, kinematic, and chemical properties of extragalactic systems, yet exploiting these observations requires a detailed understanding of where emission lines originate within the Milky Way. In this paper, we present 60$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim$3pc) resolution observations of many 3mm-band molecular lines across a large map of the W49 massive star-forming region ($\sim$100$\times$100pc at 11kpc), which were taken as part of the "LEGO" IRAM-30m large project. We find that the spatial extent or brightness of the molecular line transitions are not well correlated with their critical densities, highlighting abundance and optical depth must be considered when estimating line emission characteristics. We explore how the total emission and emission efficiency (i.e. line brightness per H$_{2}$ column density) of the line emission vary as a function of molecular hydrogen column density and dust temperature. We find that there is not a single region of this parameter space responsible for the brightest and most efficiently emitting gas for all species. For example, we find that the HCN transition shows high emission efficiency at high column density ($10^{22}$cm$^{-2}$) and moderate temperatures (35K), whilst e.g. N$_2$H$^+$ emits most efficiently towards lower temperatures ($10^{22}$cm$^{-2}$, Comment: 33+2 pages, 17+3 figures, 4+4 tables. Bianchi, E. et al., The study of hot corinos in solar-like protostars has been so far mostly limited to the Class 0 phase, hampering our understanding of their origin and evolution. In addition, recent evidence suggests that planet formation starts already during Class I phase, which therefore represents a crucial step in the future planetary system chemical composition. Hence, the study of hot corinos in Class I protostars has become of paramount importance. Here, we report the discovery of a hot corino towards the prototypical Class I protostar L1551 IRS5, obtained within the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) Large Program FAUST (Fifty AU STudy of the chemistry in the disc/envelope system of solar-like protostars).We detected several lines from methanol and its isotopologues (13CH3OH and CH2DOH), methyl formate, and ethanol. Lines are bright towards the north component of the IRS5 binary system, and a possible second hot corino may be associated with the south component. The methanol lines' non-LTE analysis constrains the gas temperature (100 K), density (1.5 × 108 cm3), and emitting size (10 au in radius). All CH3OH and 13CH3OH lines are optically thick, preventing a reliable measure of the deuteration. The methyl formate and ethanol relative abundances are compatible with those measured in Class 0 hot corinos. We show the first interferometric maps of the 14N/15N ratio obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) towards the Solar-like forming protocluster OMC-2 FIR4. We observed N2H+, 15NNH+, N15NH+ (1-0), and N2D+ (2-1), from which we derive the isotopic ratios 14N/15N and D/H. The target is one of the closest analogues of the environment in which our Sun may have formed. The ALMA images, having synthesised beam corresponding to ~600 au, show that the emission of the less abundant isotopologues is distributed in several cores of ~10" (i.e. ~0.02~pc or 4000 au) embedded in a more extended N2H+ emission. Overall, our results indicate that: (1) 14N/15N does not change across the region at core scales, and (2) 14N/15N does not depend on temperature variations. Our findings also suggest that the 14N/15N variations found in pristine Solar System objects are likely not inherited from the protocluster stage, and hence their reason has to be found elsewhere., 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

Context. One of the goals of astrochemistry is to understand the degree of chemical complexity that can be reached in star-forming regions, along with the identification of precursors of the building blocks of life in the interstellar medium. To answer such questions, unbiased spectral surveys with large bandwidth and high spectral resolution are needed, in particular, to resolve line blending in chemically rich sources and identify each molecule (especially for complex organic molecules). These kinds of observations have already been successfully carried out, primarily towards the Galactic Center, a region that shows peculiar environmental conditions. Aims. We present an unbiased spectral survey of one of the most chemically rich hot molecular cores located outside the Galactic Center, in the high-mass star-forming region G31.41+0.31. The aim of this 3mm spectral survey is to identify and characterize the physical parameters of the gas emission in different molecular species, focusing on complex organic molecules. In this first paper, we present the survey and discuss the detection and relative abundances of the three isomers of C2H4O2: methyl formate, glycolaldehyde, and acetic acid. Methods. Observations were carried out with the ALMA interferometer, covering all of band 3 from 84 to 116 GHz (∼32 GHz bandwidth) with an angular resolution of 1.2″ × 1.2″ (∼ 4400 au × 4400 au) and a spectral resolution of ∼0.488 MHz (∼1.3-1.7 km s-1). The transitions of the three molecules have been analyzed with the software XCLASS to determine the physical parameters of the emitted gas. Results. All three isomers were detected with abundances of (2 ± 0.6) × 10-7, (4.3-8) × 10-8, and (5.0 ± 1.4) × 10-9 for methyl formate, acetic acid, and glycolaldehyde, respectively. Methyl formate and acetic acid abundances are the highest detected up to now, if compared to sources in the literature. The size of the emission varies among the three isomers with acetic acid showing the most compact emission while methyl formate exhibits the most extended emission. Different chemical pathways, involving both grain-surface chemistry and cold or hot gas-phase reactions, have been proposed for the formation of these molecules, but the small number of detections, especially of acetic acid and glycolaldehyde, have made it very difficult to confirm or discard the predictions of the models. The comparison with chemical models in literature suggests the necessity of grain-surface routes for the formation of methyl formate in G31, while for glycolaldehyde both scenarios could be feasible. Context. Low-mass protostars drive powerful molecular outflows that can be observed with millimetre and submillimetre telescopes. Various sulfuretted species are known to be bright in shocks and could be used to infer the physical and chemical conditions throughout the observed outflows. Aims. The evolution of sulfur chemistry is studied along the outflows driven by the NGC 1333-IRAS4A protobinary system located in the Perseus cloud to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in shocks. Methods. We observed various transitions from OCS, CS, SO, and SO2 towards NGC 1333-IRAS4A in the 1.3, 2, and 3 mm bands using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and we interpreted the observations through the use of the Paris-Durham shock model. Results. The targeted species clearly show different spatial emission along the two outflows driven by IRAS4A. OCS is brighter on small and large scales along the south outflow driven by IRAS4A1, whereas SO2 is detected rather along the outflow driven by IRAS4A2 that is extended along the north east-south west direction. SO is detected at extremely high radial velocity up to + 25 km s-1 relative to the source velocity, clearly allowing us to distinguish the two outflows on small scales. Column density ratio maps estimated from a rotational diagram analysis allowed us to confirm a clear gradient of the OCS/SO2 column density ratio between the IRAS4A1 and IRAS4A2 outflows. Analysis assuming non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium of four SO2 transitions towards several SiO emission peaks suggests that the observed gas should be associated with densities higher than 105 cm-3 and relatively warm (T > 100 K) temperatures in most cases. Conclusions. The observed chemical differentiation between the two outflows of the IRAS4A system could be explained by a different chemical history. The outflow driven by IRAS4A1 is likely younger and more enriched in species initially formed in interstellar ices, such as OCS, and recently sputtered into the shock gas. High-resolution (0."03 - 0."09) (9 - 26 pc)) ALMA (100 - 350 GHz (3 - 0.8 mm)) and VLA 45 GHz measurements have been used to image continuum and spectral line emission from the inner region of the nearby infrared luminous galaxy IC 860. We detect compact (r=8-10 pc), luminous, mm continuum emission in the core of IC 860, with brightness temperatures $T_{\rm B}>$ 280 K. The 45 GHz continuum is equally compact, but fainter in flux. We suggest that the 3 to 0.8 mm continuum is opaque at mm-wavelengths, implying a very large H$_2$ column density $N$(H$_2$) of 1e26 cm-2, and that it emerges from hot dust with temperature $T_{\rm d} \sim 280$ K. Vibrationally excited lines of HCN $��_2$=1f J=4-3 and 3-2 (HCN-VIB) are seen in emission and resolved on scales of 40-50 pc. The HCN-VIB emission reveals a north-south nuclear velocity gradient with projected rotation velocities of v=100 kms$^{-1}$ at r=10 pc. The brightest HCN-VIB emission is oriented perpendicular to the velocity gradient. Ground state lines of HCN 3-2, 4-3, HC$^{15}$N 4-3, HCO$^+$ 3-2, 4-3 and CS 7-6, show complex line absorption and emission features. HCN and HCO$^+$ have red-shifted, reversed P-Cygni profiles consistent with gas inflows of $\sim$50 kms$^{-1}$. The absorption features can be traced from the north-east into the nucleus. In contrast, CS 7-6 shows blue-shifted line wings extending to -180 kms$^{-1}$. We suggest that a dense and slow outflow is hidden behind a foreground layer of inflowing gas. It appears that the centre of IC 860 is in a phase of rapid evolution where an inflow is building up the nuclear column density of gas. A slow, dense outflow may be signalling the onset of feedback. NGC 4945 is one of the nearest (~3.8 Mpc; 1" ~ 19 pc) starburst galaxies. ALMA band 3 (3--4\,mm) observations of HCN, HCO+, CS, C3H2, SiO, HCO, and CH3C2H were carried out with ~2" resolution. We present 850 and 450 micron observations of the dense regions within the Auriga-California molecular cloud using SCUBA-2 as part of the JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey to identify candidate protostellar objects, measure the masses of their circumstellar material (disk and envelope), and compare the star formation to that in the Orion A molecular cloud. We identify 59 candidate protostars based on the presence of compact submillimeter emission, complementing these observations with existing Herschel/SPIRE maps. Of our candidate protostars, 24 are associated with young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Spitzer and Herschel/PACS catalogs of 166 and 60 YSOs, respectively (177 unique), confirming their protostellar nature. The remaining 35 candidate protostars are in regions, particularly around LkHalpha 101, where the background cloud emission is too bright to verify or rule out the presence of the compact 70 micron emission that is expected for a protostellar source. We keep these candidate protostars in our sample but note that they may indeed be prestellar in nature. Our observations are sensitive to the high end of the mass distribution in Auriga-Cal. We find that the disparity between the richness of infrared star forming objects in Orion A and the sparsity in Auriga-Cal extends to the submillimeter, suggesting that the relative star formation rates have not varied over the Class II lifetime and that Auriga-Cal will maintain a lower star formation efficiency., Comment: 39 pages (54 including the Appendix), 9 figures, 3 tables, in press in ApJ

The high-sensitivity of the IRAM 30-m ASAI unbiased spectral survey in the mm-window allows us to detect NO emission towards both the Class I object SVS13-A and the protostellar outflow shock L1157-B1. We detect the hyperfine components of the $^2\Pi_{\rm 1/2}$ $J$ = 3/2 $\to$ 1/2 (at 151 GHz) and the $^2\Pi_{\rm 1/2}$ $J$ = 5/2 $\to$ 3/2 (250 GHz) spectral pattern. The two objects show different NO profiles: (i) SVS13-A emits through narrow (1.5 km s$^{-1}$) lines at the systemic velocity, while (ii) L1157-B1 shows broad ($\sim$ 5 km s$^{-1}$) blue-shifted emission. For SVS13-A the analysis leads to $T_{\rm ex}$ $\geq$ 4 K, $N(\rm NO)$ $\leq$ 3 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, and indicates the association of NO with the protostellar envelope. In L1157-B1, NO is tracing the extended outflow cavity: $T_{\rm ex}$ $\simeq$ 4--5 K, and $N(\rm NO)$ = 5.5$\pm$1.5 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. Using C$^{18}$O, $^{13}$C$^{18}$O, C$^{17}$O, and $^{13}$C$^{17}$O ASAI observations we derive an NO fractional abundance less than $\sim$ 10$^{-7}$ for the SVS13-A envelope, in agreement with previous measurements towards extended PDRs and prestellar objects. Conversely, a definite $X(NO)$ enhancement is measured towards L1157-B1, $\sim$ 6 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$, showing that the NO production increases in shocks. The public code UCLCHEM was used to interpret the NO observations, confirming that the abundance observed in SVS13-A can be attained in an envelope with a gas density of 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ and a kinetic temperature of 40 K. The NO abundance in L1157-B1 is reproduced with pre-shock densities of 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ subjected to a $\sim$ 45 km s$^{-1}$ shock., Comment: MNRAS, in press

Infrared-Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense regions of high (optical and infrared) extinction, believed to be the birthplace of high-mass stars and stellar clusters. The physical mechanisms leading to the formation of these IRDCs are not completely understood and it is thus important to study their molecular gas kinematics and chemical content to search for any signature of the IRDCs formation process. Using the 30m-diameter antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronom\'ia Milim\'etrica, we have obtained emission maps of dense gas tracers (H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and HN$^{13}$C) and typical shock tracers (SiO and CH$_3$OH) toward three IRDCs, G028.37+00.07, G034.43+00.24 and G034.77-00.55 (clouds C, F and G, respectively). We have studied the molecular gas kinematics in these clouds and, consistent with previous works toward other IRDCs, the clouds show complex gas kinematics with several velocity-coherent sub-structures separated in velocity space by a few km s$^{-1}$. Correlated with these complex kinematic structures, widespread (parsec-scale) emission of SiO and CH$_3$OH is present in all the three clouds. For clouds C and F, known to be actively forming stars, widespread SiO and CH$_3$OH is likely associated with on-going star formation activity. However, for cloud G, which lacks either 8 $\mu$m or 24 $\mu$m sources and 4.5 $\mu$m H$_2$ shock-excited emission, the detected widespread SiO and CH$_3$OH emission may have originated in a large-scale shock interaction, although a scenario involving a population of low-mass stars driving molecular outflows cannot be fully ruled out., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. This paper presents observations of the Lupus I molecular cloud at 450 and 850 μm with\ud Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA-2) as part of the James Clerk Maxwell\ud Telescope Gould Belt Survey (JCMT GBS). Nine compact sources, assumed to be the discs of\ud young stellar objects (YSOs), 12 extended protostellar, pre-stellar and starless cores, and one\ud isolated, low-luminosity protostar, are detected in the region. Spectral energy distributions,\ud including submillimetre fluxes, are produced for 15 YSOs, and each is fitted with the models\ud of Robitaille et al. The proportion of Class 0/I protostars is higher than that seen in other\ud Gould Belt regions such as Ophiuchus and Serpens. Circumstellar disc masses are calculated\ud for more evolved sources, while protostellar envelope masses are calculated for protostars.\ud Up to four very low luminosity objects are found; a large fraction when compared to other\ud Spitzer c2d regions. One YSO has a disc mass greater than the minimum mass solar nebula.\ud 12 starless/protostellar cores are detected by SCUBA-2 and their masses are calculated. The\ud stability of these cores is examined using both the thermal Jeans mass and a turbulent virial\ud mass when possible. Two cores in Lupus I are super-Jeans and contain no known YSOs. One\ud of these cores has a virial parameter of 1.1 ± 0.4, and could therefore be pre-stellar. The high\ud ratio of Class 0/I to Class III YSOs (1:1), and the presence of a pre-stellar core candidate,\ud provides support for the hypothesis that a shock recently triggered star formation in Lupus I.

We present 450 and 850 micron submillimetre continuum observations of the IC5146 star-forming region taken as part of the JCMT Gould Belt Survey. We investigate the location of bright submillimetre (clumped) emission with the larger-scale molecular cloud through comparison with extinction maps, and find that these denser structures correlate with higher cloud column density. Ninety-six individual submillimetre clumps are identified using FellWalker and their physical properties are examined. These clumps are found to be relatively massive, ranging from 0.5to 116 MSun with a mean mass of 8 MSun and a median mass of 3.7 MSun. A stability analysis for the clumps suggest that the majority are (thermally) Jeans stable, with M/M_J < 1. We further compare the locations of known protostars with the observed submillimetre emission, finding that younger protostars, i.e., Class 0 and I sources, are strongly correlated with submillimetre peaks and that the clumps with protostars are among the most Jeans unstable. Finally, we contrast the evolutionary conditions in the two major star-forming regions within IC5146: the young cluster associated with the Cocoon Nebula and the more distributed star formation associated with the Northern Streamer filaments. The Cocoon Nebula appears to have converted a higher fraction of its mass into dense clumps and protostars, the clumps are more likely to be Jeans unstable, and a larger fraction of these remaining clumps contain embedded protostars. We present observations of the Cepheus Flare obtained as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Legacy Survey (GBLS) with the SCUBA-2 instrument. We produce a catalogue of sources found by SCUBA-2, and separate these into starless cores and protostars. We determine masses and densities for each of our sources, using source temperatures determined by the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. We compare the properties of starless cores in four different molecular clouds: L1147/58, L1172/74, L1251 and L1228. We find that the core mass functions for each region typically show shallower-than-Salpeter behaviour. We find that L1147/58 and L1228 have a high ratio of starless cores to Class II protostars, while L1251 and L1174 have a low ratio, consistent with the latter regions being more active sites of current star formation, while the former are forming stars less actively. We determine that if modelled as thermally supported Bonnor–Ebert spheres, most of our cores have stable configurations accessible to them. We estimate the external pressures on our cores using archival 13CO velocity dispersion measurements and find that our cores are typically pressure confined, rather than gravitationally bound. We perform a virial analysis on our cores, and find that they typically cannot be supported against collapse by internal thermal energy alone, due primarily to the measured external pressures. We report on a systematic search for oxygen-bearing Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) in the Solar-like protostellar shock region L1157-B1, as part of the IRAM Large Program "Astrochemical Surveys At IRAM" (ASAI). Several COMs are unambiguously detected, some for the first time, such as ketene H$_2$CCO, dimethyl ether (CH$_3$OCH$_3$) and glycolaldehyde (HCOCH$_2$OH), and others firmly confirmed, such as formic acid (HCOOH) and ethanol (C$_2$H$_5$OH). Thanks to the high sensitivity of the observations and full coverage of the 1, 2 and 3mm wavelength bands, we detected numerous (10--125) lines from each of the detected species. Based on a simple rotational diagram analysis, we derive the excitation conditions and the column densities of the detected COMs. Combining our new results with those previously obtained towards other protostellar objects, we found a good correlation between ethanol, methanol and glycolaldehyde. We derive molecular-gas-phase $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotope ratios for the central few 100 pc of the three nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253, NGC 1068, and NGC 4945 making use of the $\lambda$ $\sim$ 3 mm $^{12}$CN and $^{13}$CN $N$ = 1--0 lines in the ALMA Band 3. The $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios derived from the ratios of these lines range from 30 to 67 with an average of 41.6 $\pm$ 0.2 in NGC 253, from 24 to 62 with an average of 38.3 $\pm$ 0.4 in NGC 1068, and from 6 to 44 with an average of 16.9 $\pm$ 0.3 in NGC 4945. The highest $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios are determined in some of the outskirts of the nuclear regions of the three starburst galaxies. The lowest ratios are associated with the northeastern and southwestern molecular peaks of NGC 253, the northeastern and southwestern edge of the mapped region in NGC 1068, and the very center of NGC 4945. In case of NGC 1068, the measured ratios suggest inflow from the outer part of NGC 1068 into the circum-nuclear disk through both the halo and the bar. The Far Infrared Spectroscopic Explorer (FIRSPEX) is a novel European-led astronomy mission concept developed to enable large area ultra high spectroscopic resolution surveys in the THz regime. FIRSPEX opens up a relatively unexplored spectral and spatial parameter space that will produce an enormously significant scientific legacy by focusing on the properties of the multi-phase ISM, the assembly of molecular clouds in our Galaxy and the onset of star formation; topics which are fundamental to our understanding of galaxy evolution. The mission uses a heterodyne instrument and a ~1.2 m primary antenna to scan large areas of the sky in a number of discreet spectroscopic channels from L2. The FIRSPEX bands centered at [CI] 809 GHz, [NII]1460 GHz, [CII]1900 GHz and [OI]4700 GHz have been carefully selected to target key atomic and ionic fine structure transitions difficult or impossible to access from the ground but fundamental to the study of the multi-phase ISM in the Universe. The need for state-of-the-art sensitivity dictates the use of superconducting mixers configured either as tunnel junctions or hot electron bolometers. This technology requires cooling to low temperatures, approaching 4K, in order to operate. The receivers will operate in double sideband configuration providing a total of 7 pixels on the sky. FIRSPEX will operate from L2 in both survey and pointed mode enabling velocity resolved spectroscopy of large areas of sky as well as targeted observations.

The dust emissivity spectral index, $\beta$, is a critical parameter for deriving the mass and temperature of star-forming structures, and consequently their gravitational stability. The $\beta$ value is dependent on various dust grain properties, such as size, porosity, and surface composition, and is expected to vary as dust grains evolve. Here we present $\beta$, dust temperature, and optical depth maps of the star-forming clumps in the Perseus Molecular Cloud determined from fitting SEDs to combined Herschel and JCMT observations in the 160 $\mu$m, 250 $\mu$m, 350 $\mu$m, 500 $\mu$m, and 850 $\mu$m bands. Most of the derived $\beta$, and dust temperature values fall within the ranges of 1.0 - 2.7 and 8 - 20 K, respectively. In Perseus, we find the $\beta$ distribution differs significantly from clump to clump, indicative of grain growth. Furthermore, we also see significant, localized $\beta$ variations within individual clumps and find low $\beta$ regions correlate with local temperature peaks, hinting at the possible origins of low $\beta$ grains. Throughout Perseus, we also see indications of heating from B stars and embedded protostars, as well evidence of outflows shaping the local landscape., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 15 figures, 3 tables

Garcia-Burillo, S. et. al., We used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to map the emission of the CO(6-5) molecular line and the 432 μm continuum emission from the 300 pc sized circumnuclear disk (CND) of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 with a spatial resolution of ∼4 pc. These observations spatially resolve the CND and, for the first time, image the dust emission, the molecular gas distribution, and the kinematics from a 7-10 pc diameter disk that represents the submillimeter counterpart of the putative torus of NGC 1068. We fitted the nuclear spectral energy distribution of the torus using ALMA and near- and mid-infrared (NIR/MIR) data with CLUMPY torus models. The mass and radius of the best-fit solution for the torus are both consistent with the values derived from the ALMA data alone: and R torus = 3.5 ± 0.5 pc. The dynamics of the molecular gas in the torus show strong non-circular motions and enhanced turbulence superposed on a surprisingly slow rotation pattern of the disk. By contrast with the nearly edge-on orientation of the H2O megamaser disk, we found evidence suggesting that the molecular torus is less inclined (i = 34°-66°) at larger radii. The lopsided morphology and complex kinematics of the torus could be the signature of the Papaloizou-Pringle instability, long predicted to likely drive the dynamical evolution of active galactic nuclei tori. © 2016. We present the JCMT Gould Belt Survey's first look results of the southern extent of the Orion A Molecular Cloud ($\delta \leq -5\mathrm{:}31\mathrm{:}27.5$). Employing a two-step structure identification process, we construct individual catalogues for large-scale regions of significant emission labelled as islands and smaller-scale subregions called fragments using the 850 $\mu$m continuum maps obtained using SCUBA-2. We calculate object masses, sizes, column densities, and concentrations. We discuss fragmentation in terms of a Jeans instability analysis and highlight interesting structures as candidates for follow-up studies. Furthermore, we associate the detected emission with young stellar objects (YSOs) identified by Spitzer and Herschel. We find that although the population of active star-forming regions contains a wide variety of sizes and morphologies, there is a strong positive correlation between the concentration of an emission region and its calculated Jeans instability. There are, however, a number of highly unstable subregions in dense areas of the map that show no evidence of star formation. We find that only $\sim$72\% of the YSOs defined as Class 0+I and flat-spectrum protostars coincide with dense 850 $\mu$m emission structures (column densities $>3.7\times10^{21}\mathrm{\:cm}^{-2}$). The remaining 28\% of these objects, which are expected to be embedded in dust and gas, may be misclassified. We present SCUBA-2 450{\mu}m and 850{\mu}m observations of the W40 complex in the Serpens-Aquila region as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Survey (GBS) of nearby star-forming regions. We investigate radiative heating by constructing temperature maps from the ratio of SCUBA-2 fluxes using a fixed dust opacity spectral index, {\beta} = 1.8, and a beam convolution kernel to achieve a common 14.8" resolution. We identify 82 clumps ranging between 10 and 36K with a mean temperature of 20{\pm}3K. Clump temperature is strongly correlated with proximity to the external OB association and there is no evidence that the embedded protostars significantly heat the dust. We identify 31 clumps that have cores with densities greater than 105cm{^{-3}}. Thirteen of these cores contain embedded Class 0/I protostars. Many cores are associated with bright-rimmed clouds seen in Herschel 70 {\mu}m images. From JCMT HARP observations of the 12CO 3-2 line, we find contamination of the 850{\mu}m band of up to 20 per cent. We investigate the free-free contribution to SCUBA-2 bands from large-scale and ultracompact H ii regions using archival VLA data and find the contribution is limited to individual stars, accounting for 9 per cent of flux per beam at 450 {\mu}m or 12 per cent at 850 {\mu}m in these cases. We conclude that radiative heating has potentially influenced the formation of stars in the Dust Arc sub-region, favouring Jeans stable clouds in the warm east and fragmentation in the cool west., Comment: 27 pages, 25 figures, 7 tables, 3 online catalogues

We present high resolution (0."4) IRAM PdBI and ALMA mm and submm observations of the (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) IRAS17208-0014, Arp220, IC860 and Zw049.057 that reveal intense line emission from vibrationally excited ($��_2$=1) J=3-2 and 4-3 HCN. The emission is emerging from buried, compact (r$$5\times 10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$ kpc$^{-2}$. These nuclei are likely powered by accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and/or hot (>200 K) extreme starbursts. Vibrational, $��_2$=1, lines of HCN are excited by intense 14 micron mid-infrared emission and are excellent probes of the dynamics, masses, and physical conditions of (U)LIRG nuclei when H$_2$ column densities exceed $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. It is clear that these lines open up a new interesting avenue to gain access to the most obscured AGNs and starbursts. Vibrationally excited HCN acts as a proxy for the absorbed mid-infrared emission from the embedded nuclei, which allows for reconstruction of the intrinsic, hotter dust SED. In contrast, we show strong evidence that the ground vibrational state ($��$=0), J=3-2 and 4-3 rotational lines of HCN and HCO$^+$ fail to probe the highly enshrouded, compact nuclear regions owing to strong self- and continuum absorption. The HCN and HCO$^+$ line profiles are double-peaked because of the absorption and show evidence of non-circular motions - possibly in the form of in- or outflows. Detections of vibrationally excited HCN in external galaxies are so far limited to ULIRGs and early-type spiral LIRGs, and we discuss possible causes for this. We tentatively suggest that the peak of vibrationally excited HCN emission is connected to a rapid stage of nuclear growth, before the phase of strong feedback., 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Molecular line observations may serve as diagnostics of the degree to which the number density of cosmic ray protons, having energies of 10s to 100s of MeVs each, is enhanced in starburst galaxies and galaxies with active nuclei. Results, obtained with the UCL\_PDR code, for the fractional abundances of molecules as functions of the cosmic-ray induced ionisation rate, $\zeta$, are presented. The aim is not to model any particular external galaxies. Rather, it is to identify characteristics of the dependencies of molecular abundances on $\zeta$, in part to enable the development of suitable observational programmes for cosmic ray dominated regions (CRDRs) which will then stimulate detailed modelling. For a number density of hydrogen nuclei of of $10^4$ cm$^{-3}$, and high visual extinction, the fractional abundances of some species increase as $\zeta$ increases to $10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$, but for much higher values of $\zeta$ the fractional abundances of all molecular species are significantly below their peak values. We show in particular that OH, H$_{2}$O, H$_{3}^{+}$, H$_{3}$O$^{+}$ and OH$^{+}$ attain large fractional abundances ($\geqslant 10^{-8}$) for $\zeta$ as large as $10^{-12}$ s$^{-1}$. HCO$^{+}$ is a poor tracer of CRDRs when $\zeta > 10^{-13}$ s$^{-1}$. Sulphur-bearing species may be useful tracers of CRDRs gas in which $\zeta \sim 10^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$. Ammonia has a large fractional abundance for $\zeta \leqslant 10^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ and nitrogen appears in CN-bearing species at significant levels as $\zeta$ increases, even up to $\sim 10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$. In this paper, we also discuss our model predictions, comparing them to recent detections in both galactic and extragalactic sources. We show that they agree well, to a first approximation, with the observational constraints.

In this article we review some of the most recent advances ill the modelling and interpretation of molecular fine emissions from Galactic and extragalctic environments, in particular front massive star forming regions. Hence We show that observations of extragalactic molecules call potentially be used to infer and disentangle the physical conditions in the Vs, as it, is already routinely done ill own Galaxy.

Aims. We present a comparison between independent computer codes, modeling the physics and chemistry of interstellar photon dominated regions (PDRs). Our goal was to understand the mutual differences in the PDR codes and their effects on the physical and chemical structure of the model clouds, and to converge the output of different codes to a common solution. Methods. A number of benchmark models have been created, covering low and high gas densities n = 10^3, 10^(5.5) cm^(-3) and far ultraviolet intensities χ = 10, 10^5 in units of the Draine field (FUV: 6 < h υ < 13.6 eV). The benchmark models were computed in two ways: one set assuming constant temperatures, thus testing the consistency of the chemical network and photo-processes, and a second set determining the temperature self consistently by solving the thermal balance, thus testing the modeling of the heating and cooling mechanisms accounting for the detailed energy balance throughout the clouds. Results. We investigated the impact of PDR geometry and agreed on the comparison of results from spherical and plane-parallel PDR models. We identified a number of key processes governing the chemical network which have been treated differently in the various codes such as the effect of PAHs on the electron density or the temperature dependence of the dissociation of CO by cosmic ray induced secondary photons, and defined a proper common treatment. We established a comprehensive set of reference models for ongoing and future PDR model bench-marking and were able to increase the agreement in model predictions for all benchmark models significantly. Nevertheless, the remaining spread in the computed observables such as the atomic fine-structure line intensities serves as a warning that there is still a considerable uncertainty when interpreting astronomical data with our models.

We employ SCUBA-2 (Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2) observations of the Orion A North molecular cloud to derive column density and temperature maps. We apply a novel, Hessian-based structural identification algorithm for detection of prestellar cores to these data, allowing for automated generation of the prestellar mass function. The resulting mass function is observed to peak at $1.39^{+0.18}_{{-}0.19} M_{\odot}$, indicating a star-forming efficiency lower limit of ∼14 per cent when compared with the Orion nebula Cluster initial mass function (IMF) peak. Additionally, the prestellar mass function is observed to decay with a high-mass powerlaw exponent $\alpha = 2.53^{+0.16}_{{-}0.14}$, indicating approximate functional similarity with the Salpeter IMF ($\alpha = 2.35$). This result, when combined with the results of previous investigations suggests a regional dependence of the star-forming efficiency.

We assume that some, but not all, of the structure observed in molecular clouds is associated with transient features which are not bound by self-gravity. We investigate the chemistry of a transient density fluctuation, with properties similar to those of a core within a molecular cloud. We run a multipoint chemical code through a core's condensation from a diffuse medium to its eventual dispersion, over a period of ∼1 Myr. The dynamical description adopted for our study is based on an understanding of a particular mechanism, involving slow-mode wave excitation, for transient structure formation which so far has been studied in detail only with plane-parallel models in which self-gravity has not been included. We find a significant enhancement of the chemical composition of the core material on its return to diffuse conditions, whilst the expansion of the core as it disperses moves this material out to large distances from the core centre. This process transports molecular species formed in the high-density regions out into the diffuse medium. Chemical enrichment of the cloud as a whole also occurs, as other cores of various sizes, life-spans and separations evolve throughout. Enrichment is strongly affected by freeze-out on to dust grains, which takes place in high-density, high visual extinction regions. As the core disperses after reaching its peak density and the visual extinction drops below a critical value, grain mantles are evaporated back into the gas phase, initiating more chemistry. The influence of the sizes, masses and cycle periods of cores will be large both for the level of chemical enrichment of a dark cloud and ultimately for the low-mass star formation rate. The cores in which stars form are almost certainly bound by their self-gravity and are not transient in the sense that the cores on which most of our study is focused are transient. Obviously, enrichment of the chemistry of low-density material will not take place if self-gravity prevents the re-expansion of a core. We also consider the case of a self-gravitating core, by holding its peak density conditions for a further 0.4 Myr. We find that the differences near the peak densities between transient and gravitationally bound cores are generally small, and the resultant column densities for objects near the peak densities do not provide definitive criteria for discriminating between transient and bound cores. However, increases in fractional abundances due to reinjection of mantle-borne species may provide a criterion for detection of a non-bound core.
