In the framework of compressional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), we numerically studied the commonly accepted presumption that the Alfv\'enic turbulence is generated by the collisions between counter-propagating Alfv\'en waves (AWs). In the conditions typical for the low-beta solar corona and inner solar wind, we launched two counter-propagating AWs in the three-dimensional simulation box and analyzed polarization and spectral properties of perturbations generated before and after AW collisions. The observed post-collisional perturbations have different polarizations and smaller cross-field scales than the original waves, which supports theoretical scenarios with direct turbulent cascades. However, contrary to theoretical expectations, the spectral transport is strongly suppressed at the scales satisfying the classic critical balance of incompressional MHD. Instead, a modified critical balance can be established by colliding AWs with significantly shorter perpendicular scales. We discuss consequences of these effects for the turbulence dynamics and turbulent heating of compressional plasmas. In particular, solar coronal loops can be heated by the strong turbulent cascade if the characteristic widths of the loop substructures are more than ten times smaller than the loop width. We present a description of the recent advances in the development of the KORTES assembly -- the first solar oriented mission designed for the Russian segment of International Space Station. The KORTES consists of several imaging and spectroscopic instruments collectively covering a wide spectral range extending from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths to X-rays. The EUV telescopes inside KORTES will trace the origination and dynamics of various solar phenomena, e.g. flares, CMEs, eruptions etc. EUV spectra provided by grazing-incidence spectroheliographs will enable precise DEM-diagnostics during these events. The monochromatic X-ray imager will observe the formation of hot plasma in active regions and outside them. The SolpeX module inside KORTES will offer an opportunity to measure fluxes, Doppler shifts and polarization of soft X-ray emission both in lines and continuum. SolpeX observations will contribute to studies of particle beams and chromospheric evaporation. The instrumentation of KORTES will employ a variety of novel multilayer and crystal optics to be discussed. The deployment of KORTES is planned of 2024.

We attempt to quantitatively study the uncertainties of the polarized brightness and for the polarization angle which are to be expected for measurements from noisy image detectors in classical coronagraphs. We derive the probability density functions (PDF) which apply to polarization observations with polarization filters at 0∘, 60∘ and 120∘. The noise in the directly observed image intensities is assumed to be normally distributed. We find that for low and medium signal-to-noise ratios the polarized brightness obeys a distribution with a strongly biased mean which, if not taken account of, leads to an overestimation of the polarized brightness and degree of polarization. The PDFs are compared with data from the SECCHI-COR1 coronagraph onboard STEREO-A in order to detect systematic or random perturbations of the polarized brightness and the polarization angle beyond the unavoidable photon and detector hardware noise. This noise is estimated from two successive filter sequences taken in-flight during calm coronal conditions on 18 May 2008 and is expressed in the form of an intensity–variance relation. Two small deviations between the measured distributions and the predicted PDF for the polarization angle were found. The standard deviation of the polarization angle error decreases with increasing signal-to-noise ratio of the polarized brightness. For ratios larger than about 8 this decrease was found not as steep anymore as predicted which could hint to a small additional noise source. Next, we found a systematic constant deviation of the polarization angle by $-1^{\circ }$ − 1 ∘ for all signal-to-noise ratios of the polarized brightness. Besides these small discrepancies, our theoretically derived PDFs agree quite well with the distributions of measured brightnesses in test regions of the images. The PDFs we present here can equally be applied to similarly measured data from other coronagraphs and may help to quantify uncertainty limits of the derived polarization. They can be used for in-flight health checks of an instrument, are useful when separating unpolarized stray light from the polarized K-corona and when comparing the observed polarization data with results from model simulations.

Here we describe scientific processing pipeline of ASPIICS. The ASPIICS coronagraph onboard the formation ying PROBA-3 mission will deliver unprecedented observations of the solar corona starting from 1:1Rꙩ with low straylight. The Science Operations Center (SOC) of ASPIICS, to be installed at the Royal Observatory of Belgium, is responsible for delivering the raw and radiometrically calibrated data products to the science community. Among other processes, the SOC hosts the ASPIICS science data pipeline. The science processing of the ASPIICS data is required to account for the optical and detector effects correctly, convert the data into physical units, merge individual exposures into full field of view images, and calculate the polarized and spectral data products. The general architecture of the SOC is discussed and a particular attention is paid to the science data pipeline.

Lagrange eUv Coronal Imager (LUCI) is a solar imager in the Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) that is being developed as part of the Lagrange mission, a mission designed to be positioned at the L5 Lagrangian point to monitor space weather from its source on the Sun, through the heliosphere, to the Earth. LUCI will use an off-axis two mirror design equipped with an EUV enhanced active pixel sensor. This type of detector has advantages that promise to be very beneficial for monitoring the source of space weather in the EUV. LUCI will also have a novel off-axis wide field-of-view, designed to observe the solar disk, the lower corona, and the extended solar atmosphere close to the Sun–Earth line. LUCI will provide solar coronal images at a 2–3 min cadence in a pass-band centred on 19.5. Observations made through this pass-band allow for the detection and monitoring of semi-static coronal structures such as coronal holes, prominences, and active regions; as well as transient phenomena such as solar flares, limb coronal mass ejections (CMEs), EUV waves, and coronal dimmings. The LUCI data will complement EUV solar observations provided by instruments located along the Sun–Earth line such as PROBA2-SWAP, SUVI-GOES and SDO-AIA, as well as provide unique observations to improve space weather forecasts. Together with a suite of other remote-sensing and in-situ instruments onboard Lagrange, LUCI will provide science quality operational observations for space weather monitoring.

Context. The Association of Spacecraft for Polarimetric and Imaging Investigation of the Corona of the Sun (ASPIICS) is a novel externally occulted solar coronagraph that will be launched on board the Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA-3) mission in 2023. The external occulter will be placed on the first satellite ∼150 m ahead of the second satellite, which will carry an optical instrument. During 6 hours per orbit, the satellites will fly in a precise formation and will constitute a giant externally occulted coronagraph. The large distance between the external occulter and the primary objective will allow observations of the white-light solar corona starting from extremely low heights of ∼1.1 R⊙. Aims. Developing and testing of algorithms for the scientific image processing requires understanding of all the optics-related and detector-related effects of the coronagraph, development of appropriate physical and numerical models, and preparation of simulated images that include all these effects. At the same time, an analysis of the simulated data gives valuable information about the performance of the instrument, the suitable observation regime, and the amount of telemetry. Methods. We used available physical models of the instrument and implemented them as a software to generate simulated data. We analyzed intermediate and complete simulated images to obtain a better understanding of the performance of ASPIICS, in particular, to predict its photometric sensitivity, effect of noise, suitable exposure times, etc. Results. The proposed models and algorithms are used not only to create the simulated data, but also to form the basis for the scientific processing algorithms to be applied during on-ground ASPIICS data processing. We discuss the possible effect of noise and the uncertainty of the calibration factors on the accuracy of final data, and propose suitable exposure times.

International audience; The Interhelioprobe mission aims to investigate the inner heliosphere and the Sun from close distances (up to 0.3 AU) and from out of the ecliptic plane (up to 30°). In this paper we present the relevance of the mission and its main scientific objectives, describe the scientific payload, ballistic scenario and orbits of the spacecraft. Possibilities of scientific cooperation with other solar and heliospheric space missions are also mentioned.

We present the first detection of solar flare emission at mid-ultraviolet wavelengths around 2000 by the channel 2 of the Large-Yield RAdiometer (LYRA) on board the PRoject for OnBoard Autonomy 2 mission. The flare (SOL20170906) was also observed in the channel 1 of LYRA centered at the H i Ly line at 1216 showing a clear non-thermal profile in both channels. The flare radiation in channel 2 is consistent with the hydrogen Balmer continuum emission produced by an optically thin chromospheric slab heated up to 10,000 K. Simultaneous observations in channels 1 and 2 allow the separation of the line emission (primarily from the Ly line) from the Balmer continuum emission. Together with the recent detection of the Balmer continuum emission in the near-ultraviolet by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer, the LYRA observations strengthen the interpretation of broadband flare emission as the hydrogen recombination continua originating in the chromosphere. ispartof: ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS vol:867 issue:2 status: published

We present observations of hot arcades made with the Mg XII spectroheliograph onboard the CORONAS-F mission, which provides monochromatic images of hot plasma in the Mg XII 8.42 A resonance line. The arcades were observed to form above the polarity inversion line between Active Regions NOAA 09847 and 09848 at four successive episodes: at 09:18, 14:13, and 22:28 UT on 28 February 2002, and at 00:40 UT on 1 March 2002. The arcades all evolved in the same way: a) a small flare (precursor) appeared near the edge of the still invisible arcade, b) the arcade brightened in a wave-like manner - closer loops brightened earlier, and c) the arcade intensity gradually decreased in $\approx$ 1 h. The estimated wave speed was $\approx$ 700 km s$^{-1}$, and the distance between the hot loops was $\approx$ 50 Mm. The arcades formed without visible changes in their magnetic structure. The arcades were probably heated up by the instabilities of the current sheet above the arcade, which were caused by an MHD wave excited by the precursor., Comment: Published in Solar Physics, 2015. We present an innovative soft X-ray polarimeter and spectrometer SOLPEX. The instrument is to be mounted aboard the ISS within the Russian science complex KORTES. The measurements to be made by SOLPEX are expected to be of unprecedented quality in terms of sensitivity to detect the soft-X-ray polarization of solar emission emanating from active regions and flares in particular. Simultaneous measurements of the polarization degree and the other characteristics (eg. evolution of the spectra) constitute the last, rather unexplored area of solar X-ray spectroscopy providing substantial diagnostic potential. Second important science task to be addressed are the measurements of Doppler shifts in selected X-ray spectral emission lines formed in hot flaring sources. The novel-type Dopplerometer (flat Bragg crystal drum unit) is planned to be a part of SOLPEX and will allow to measure line Doppler shifts in absolute terms with unprecedented time resolution (fraction of a second) during the impulsive flare phases. We shall present some details of the SOLPEX instrument and discuss observing sequences in a view of science objectives to be reached.

The main problems of measuring the roughness of supersmooth surfaces for X-ray optics and an approach developed by us for the metrology and production of optical elements with diffraction-quality reflective surfaces are discussed. Up-to-date data on the roughness obtained upon the polishing of fused quartz are presented.

Aims: To analyze influence of optical ghost images formed inside the telescope and develop an algorithm for their removal. Methods: We implement the optical layout of ASPIICS in Zemax and study the ghost behaviour in sequential and non-sequential regimes. We identify sources of the ghost contributions and analyze their geometrical behaviour. Finally we develop a mathematical model and software to calculate ghost images for any given input image. Results: We show that ghost light can be important in the outer part of the field of view, where the coronal signal is weak, since the energy of bright inner corona is redistributed to the outer corona. However the model allows to remove the ghost contribution. Due to a large distance between the external occulter and the primary objective, the primary objective does not produce a significant ghost. We present the innovative soft X-ray spectro-polarimeter, SolpeX. This instrument consists of three functionally independent blocks. They are to be included into the Russian instrument KORTES, to be mounted onboard the ISS. The three SolpeX units are: a simple pin-hole X-ray spectral imager, a polarimeter, and a fast-rotating drum multiple-flat-crystal Bragg spectrometer. Such a combination of measuring blocks will offer a new opportunity to reliably measure possible X-ray polarization and spectra of solar flares, in particular during the impulsive phase. Polarized Bremsstrahlung and line emission due to the presence of directed particle beams will be detected, and measurements of the velocities of evaporated hot plasma will be made. In this paper we discuss the details of the construction of the SolpeX units. The delivery of KORTES with SolpeX to the ISS is expected to happen in 2017/2018.

We analyse nonlinear evolution of torsional Alfv\'en waves in a straight magnetic flux tube filled in with a low-$\beta$ plasma, and surrounded with a plasma of lower density. Such magnetic tubes model, in particular, a segment of a coronal loop or a polar plume. The wavelength is taken comparable to the tube radius. We perform numerical simulation of the wave propagation using ideal magnetohydrodynamics. We find that a torsional wave nonlinearly induces three kinds of compressive flows: the parallel flow at the Alfv\'en speed, that constitutes a bulk plasma motion along the magnetic field, the tube wave, and also transverse flows in the radial direction, associated with sausage fast magnetoacoustic modes. In addition, nonlinear torsional wave steepens and its propagation speed increases. The latter effect leads to the progressive distortion of torsional wave front, i.e. nonlinear phase mixing. Because of the intrinsic non-uniformity of the torsional wave amplitude across the tube radius, the nonlinear effects are more pronounced in regions with higher wave amplitude. They are always absent at the axes of the flux tube. In the case of a linear radial profile of the wave amplitude, the nonlinear effects are localised in an annulus region near the tube boundary. Thus, the parallel compressive flows driven by torsional Alfv\'en waves in the solar and stellar coronae, are essentially non-uniform in the perpendicular direction. The presence of additional sinks for the wave energy reduces the efficiency of the nonlinear parallel cascade in torsional Alfv\'en waves., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

In January 2009, the CORONAS-PHOTON spacecraft was successfully launched. It includes a set of telescopes and spectroheliometers—TESIS—designed to image the solar corona in soft X-ray and EUV spectral ranges. Due to features of the reading system, to obtain physical information from these images, it is necessary to preprocess them, i.e., to remove the background, correct the white field, level, and clean. The paper discusses the algorithms and software developed and used for the preprocessing of images.

On February 26, 2009, the first data was obtained in the TESIS experiment on the research of the solar corona using imaging spectroscopy. The TESIS is a part of the scientific equipment of the CORONAS-PHO-TON spacecraft and is designed for imaging the solar corona in soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet regions of the spectrum with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions at altitudes from the transition region to three solar radii. The article describes the main characteristics of the instrumentation, management features, and operation modes.

Observing the Sun’s hot corona with sub-second spatial resolution is important in solving a number of basic solar physics problems. The new ARCA satellite observatory under development at the Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, will be first to provide images of the hot solar corona with a spatial resolution of about 0.18 arcsec. Scientific and technical features of the observatory are discussed.

ASPIICS is a novel externally occulted coronagraph that will be launched onboard the PROBA-3 mission of ESA. The external occulter (EO) will be placed on one satellite ~150 m ahead of the second satellite with an optical instrument. During part of each orbit, the satellites will fly in a precise formation, constituting a giant externally occulted coronagraph. Large distance between the EO and the primary objective will allow observations of the white-light solar corona starting already from ~1.1RSun. We analyze influence of shifts of the satellites and misalignments of optical elements on diffracted light. Based on the quantitative influence of misalignments on diffracted light, we will provide a "recipe" for choosing the size of the internal occulter (IO) to achieve a trade-off between the minimal height of observations and sustainability to possible misalignments. We implement a numerical model of the diffracted light and its propagation through the optical system, and compute intensities of diffracted light throughout the instrument. Our numerical model extends axi-symmetrical model of Rougeot et al. 2017 to non-symmetrical cases. The computations fully confirm main properties of the diffracted light obtained from semi-analytical consideration. Results: relative influences of various misalignments are significantly different. We show that: the IO with R=1.1RSun is large enough to compensate possible misalignments in ASPIICS, apodizing the edge of the IO leads to additional suppression of the diffracted light. Conclusions: the most important misalignment is the tilt of the telescope WRT the line connecting the center of the EO and the entrance aperture. Special care should be taken to co-align the EO and the coronagraph, i.e. co-aligning the diffraction fringe from the EO and the IO. The CORONAS-Photon spacecraft was successfully launched in January 2009. Its scientific payload included the TESIS complex of telescopes and spectrometers, designed to obtain high spectral, temporal and spatial resolution solar corona images in soft X-ray to far UV spectral range.

Plasma temperature diagnostics in solar flares and active regions has been carried out using data from the SPIRIT spectroheliograph onboard the CORONAS-F satellite. The temperature distribution of the differential emission measure (DEM) has been determined from the relative intensities of spectral lines recorded in the spectral range 280–330 A in the period from 2001 to 2005. Analysis of these distributions has led to the conclusion about the existence of active regions with various “characteristic” temperature compositions. The presence of a hot plasma with temperatures logT = 6.8−7.2 in active regions has been established for the first time from XUV spectroscopic data and monochromatic X-ray line images. The DEM distribution for intense long-decay flares has also been obtained for the first time and a similarity of the temperature compositions for flares of different classes at the decay phase has been found. The spectra have been modeled on the basis of the calculated DEMs. The systematic discrepancies between the calculated and measured line intensities are discussed.

The spectroheliograph for monochromatic imaging of the solar corona at the 0.84 nm resonance line of a Mg XII ion is a part of the TESIS instrumentation onboard the CORONAS-PHOTON satellite. The main optical elements of the spectroheliograph are the focusing crystalline mirror and imaging detector based on a CCD array. The optical scheme of the spectroheliograph, procedure, and results of calibrations of the optical elements within the working spectral range are presented. Diffraction efficiency and the rocking curve of the crystalline mirror, sensitivity, and radiation hardness of the detector were measured. It was found that the diffraction efficiency is 10%, the width of the rocking curve is ∼3′, the detector sensitivity is 31 ADC units per photon, and the radiation hardness is better than 107 rad within the working spectral range.

The reflection spectra of several concave (spherical and parabolic) periodic Mo/Si, Mg/Si, and Al/Zr multilayer mirrors intended for cosmic experiments were studied with the help of a laser-plasma soft X-ray radiation source. An investigation was made of the reflection spectra of a laboratory aperiodic Mo/Si multilayer mirror optimised for maximum uniform reflectivity in the 125–250-A range. 'Satellites' were observed in the neighbourhood of the principal peak in the spectrum of the periodic 132-A multilayer mirror. High-intensity second-order interference reflection peaks at wavelengths of about 160 A were experimentally revealed in the reflection spectra of the periodic Mo/Si 304-A mirrors. By contrast, the second-order reflection peak is substantially depressed in the spectra of the narrow-band mirrors based on the Mg/Si multilayer structure. The experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations. Manifestations of the NEXAFS structure of the L2,3 absorption edges of Al and Al2O3 were observed in the spectra recorded.

TESIS is a set of solar imaging instruments in development by the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, to be launched aboard the Russian spacecraft CORONAS-PHOTON in December 2008. The main goal of TESIS is to provide complex observations of solar active phenomena from the transition region to the inner and outer solar corona with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution in the EUV and Soft X-ray spectral bands. TESIS includes five unique space instruments: the MgXII Imaging Spectroheliometer (MISH) with spherical bent crystal mirror, for observations of the Sun in the monochromatic MgXII 8.42 A line; the EUV Spectoheliometer (EUSH) with grazing incidence difraction grating, for the registration of the full solar disc in monochromatic lines of the spectral band 280–330 A; two Full-disk EUV Telescopes (FET) with multilayer mirrors covering the band 130–136 and 290–320 A; and the Solar EUV Coronagraph (SEC), based on the Ritchey–Chretien scheme, to observe the inner and outer solar corona from 0.2 to 4 solar radii in spectral band 290–320 A. TESIS experiment will start at the rising phase of the 24th cycle of solar activity. With the advanced capabilities of its instruments, TESIS will help better understand the physics of solar flares and high-energy phenomena and provide new data on parameters of solar plasma in the temperature range 10 5 - 10 7 K . This paper gives a brief description of the experiment, its equipment, and its scientific objectives.

The relative intensities of FeXI-Fe XIII lines in the range 176–207 A have been measured for various plasma structures of the solar corona using data from the XUV spectroheliograph of the SPIRIT instrumentation onboard the CORONAS-F satellite with an improved spectral sensitivity calibration. Electron density diagnostics of a plasma with temperatures 0.8–2.5 MK has been carried out in active regions, quiet-Sun and off-limb areas, and, for the first time, in extremely intense solar flares. The density range is (1.6–8) × 109 cm−3 for flares, (0.6–1.6) × 109 cm−3 for active regions, and ∼5 × 108 cm−3 for quiet-Sun areas. The calibration accuracy of the spectral sensitivity for the spectroheliograph has been analyzed based on spectral lines with density-independent intensity ratios.

The telescope at a wavelength of 13.2 nm of the TESIS device of the CORONAS-PHOTON satellite is intended for imaging hot plasma (T ∼ 10 MK) of the solar corona. In this paper, calibration of optical elements of the telescope is described. The transmittance of multilayer Zr/Si filters and the sensitivity and radiation resistance of the CCD-array-based detector were measured. The transmittance of filters in the operating wavelength range was 40–50% (for filters of various thicknesses); the spectral dependence of the transmittance was close to the calculated one. The transmittance of filters in the visible region was (1–2) × 10−6. The detector sensitivity was 0.01–0.1 analog-to-digital units per photon (adu/photon), the radiation resistance was better than 109 rad.

We present a catalog of 65 spectral lines in the range 176–207 A recorded by the RES spectroheliograph in active regions and flares during the SPIRIT experiment onboard the CORONASF satellite. We have identified 51 lines. The relative intensities of lines recorded during the M6.5 (GOES) flare of September 16, 2001, are given. The data processing technique is discussed.

We present experimental evidence of the coronal mass ejection (CME) breakout reconnection, observed by the TESIS EUV telescope. The telescope could observe solar corona up to 2 $R_\odot$ from the Sun center in the Fe 171 \AA\ line. Starting from 2009 April 8 TESIS, observed an active region (AR) that had a quadrupolar structure with an X-point 0.5 $R_\odot$ above photosphere. A reconstructed from the MDI data magnetic field also has a multipolar structure with an X-point above the AR. At 21:45 UT on April 9, the loops near the X-point started to move away from each other with a velocity of $\approx$ 7 km s$^{-1}$. At 01:15 UT on April 10, a bright stripe appeared between the loops, and the flux in the GOES 0.5-4 \AA\ channel increased. We interpret the loops' sideways motion and the bright stripe as evidence of the breakout reconnection. At 01:45 UT, the loops below the X-point started to slowly move up. At 15:10 UT, the CME started to accelerate impulsively, while at the same time a flare arcade formed below the CME. After 15:50 UT, the CME moved with constant velocity. The CME evolution precisely followed the breakout model scenario.

Our main goal is to show that the spatial and temporal dynamics of the temperature content for plasma structures in the solar corona can be described quantitatively in principle, which is necessary for understanding the formation mechanisms of soft X-ray emission. An approach based on a consistent modeling of complex data from the CORONAS-F, GOES, and RHESSI satellites is suggested. A basically new element of this approach is the use of time series of monochromatic full-Sun images in the X-ray MgXII 8.42 A line and EUV lines obtained in the SPIRIT experiment onboard CORONAS-F. Two inversion procedures have been used to determine the volume and column differential emission measures defined by the Stieltjes integral: an optimization one based on a multitemperature parametric model and an iterative one based on the Bayesian theorem, respectively. The calculations with coronal abundances agree with the RHESSI data within the experimental error limits, while those with photospheric abundances give no satisfactory agreement. The relatively cold (with temperature 2–4 MK) and transient (4–10 MK) plasmas are shown to play a significant role in producing soft X-ray emission during flare events and in their energy budget. The spatial electron density and temperature distributions and their time evolution have been obtained for long-duration events that were first observed in the monochromatic MgXII channel and were previously called “spiders.” The method used has allowed us to verify the absolute intercalibration of the fluxes recorded in all experiments and to reference the SPIRIT MgXII images to the solar disk. We also consider possible flare plasma heating mechanisms for impulsive and long-duration (spider) flare events.

The transformation of the nanostructure of ethylene copolymers with 5-ethylidene-2-nonbornene due to variations in the concentration of 5-ethylidene-2-nonbornene is studied using scattering of very cold neutrons. The cyclic monomer is introduced into the polyethylene chain in order to modify the supramolecular structure of polyethylene and to change its macroscopic properties. It is shown that, as the content of 5-ethylidene-2-nonbornene in the copolymer increases, the amorphous-crystalline structure of polyethylene is destroyed (the crystallinity and average crystallite size decrease). Neither scattering of very cold neutrons nor X-ray diffraction are observed in samples of ethylene copolymers in which the content of 5-ethylidene-2-nonbornene exceeds 35 mol %. The transmission of light in copolymers of ethylene with 5-ethylidene-2-nonbornene is measured at different wavelengths. It is found that an increase in the content of 5-ethylidene-2-nonbornene in the copolymer leads to an increase in the transparency of the material.

The data of the Coronas F satellite and other spacecraft were used to show that, in October–November 2003, global variations in brightness occurred in all spectral regions of the solar electromagnetic radiation. The variations were asymmetric in heliolongitude. This phenomenon was accompanied by an extremely strong energy release in the form of coronal-mass ejections and solar flares. The most powerful of them took place on the solar side that was characterized by an enhanced brightness even before these events. As a result, superimposed corotating and sporadic disturbances, which are partly correlated, can be traced in parameters of the solar atmospheric radiation, flows of the solar-wind plasma, and heliospheric magnetic field.

Fast magnetoacoustic waves guided along the magnetic field by plasma non-uniformities, in particular coronal loops, fibrils and plumes, are known to be highly dispersive, which leads to the formation of quasi-periodic wave trains excited by a broadband impulsive driver, e.g. a solar flare. We investigated effects of cylindrical geometry on the fast sausage wave train formation. We performed magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations of fast magnetoacoustic perturbations of a sausage symmetry, propagating from a localised impulsive source along a field-aligned plasma cylinder with a smooth radial profile of the fast speed. The wave trains are found to have pronounced period modulation, with the longer instant period seen in the beginning of the wave train. The wave trains have also a pronounced amplitude modulation. Wavelet spectra of the wave trains have characteristic tadpole features, with the broadband large-amplitude heads preceding low-amplitude quasi-monochromatic tails. The mean period of the wave train is about the transverse fast magnetoacoustic transit time across the cylinder. The mean parallel wavelength is about the diameter of the waveguiding plasma cylinder. Instant periods are longer than the sausage wave cutoff period. The wave train characteristics depend on the fast magnetoacoustic speed in both the internal and external media, and the smoothness of the transverse profile of the equilibrium quantities, and also the spatial size of the initial perturbation. We report on the current status of the KORTES project – the first sun-oriented mission for the International Space Station to be launched in 2016-2017. KORTES will comprise several imaging and spectroscopic instruments that will observe solar corona in a number of wavebands, covering EUV and X-Ray ranges. A brief overview of the instrumentation of KORTES, its’ layout, technical parameters and scientific objectives is given. An additional attention is given to the design of multilayer optics and filters to be employed in EUV instruments of KORTES.

The experimental results on the two-dimensional 20× magnification of an x-ray image obtained in an asymmetric-reflection x-ray microscope with the use of a laboratory source of x rays are discussed. The field of view is determined by the linear sizes of the detector and is equal to 0.5 × 0.5 mm in our experiment for an exposure time of 600 s.

This review presents the basic characteristics of the SPIRIT instrument onboard the CORONAS-F satellite, description of observation programmes, summary of observation sessions and scientific data obtained, as well as the main results in the research of hot coronal plasma, solar flares and the eruptive phenomena.

We provide an analysis of contemporary multilayer optics for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) solar astronomy in the wavelength ranges: λ=12.9-13.3 nm, λ=17-21 nm, λ=28-33 nm, and λ=58.4 nm. We found new material pairs, which will make new spaceborne experiments possible due to the high reflection efficiencies, spectral resolution, and long-term stabilities of the proposed multilayer coatings. In the spectral range λ=13 nm, Mo/Be multilayer mirrors were shown to demonstrate a better ratio of reflection efficiency and spectral resolution compared with the commonly used Mo/Si. In the spectral range λ=17-21 nm, a new multilayer structure Al/Si was proposed, which had higher spectral resolution along with comparable reflection efficiency compared with the commonly used Al/Zr multilayer structures. In the spectral range λ=30 nm, the Si/Bsub4/subC/Mg/Cr multilayer structure turned out to best obey reflection efficiency and long-term stability. The Bsub4/subC and Cr layers prevented mutual diffusion of the Si and Mg layers. For the spectral range λ=58 nm, a new multilayer Mo/Mg-based structure was developed; its reflection efficiency and long-term stability have been analyzed. We also investigated intrinsic stresses inherent for most of the multilayer structures and proposed possibilities for stress elimination.

Energy release in solar corona is used to attend with plasma heating. For the most powerful processes, temperature of plasma increases up to millions of Kelvin. For this reason, the study of hot coronal plasma is the key for understanding mechanisms of heating of the corona and nature of solar flares. In this chapter, we analyze observation of Mg XII line (10 MK) in series of experiments onboard CORONAS satellites. We studied configuration, dynamics, and temperature distribution in hot plasma structures. The possible mechanisms of heating are discussed.

We present detailed EUV spectra of 4 large solar flares: M5.6, X1.3, X3.4, and X17 classes in the spectral ranges 176-207 \AA\ and 280-330 \AA. These spectra were obtained {by the slitless} spectroheliograph SPIRIT aboard the CORONAS-F satellite. To our knowledge these are the first detailed EUV spectra of large flares obtained with spectral resolution of $\sim 0.1$ \AA. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the obtained spectra and provide identification of the observed spectral lines. The identification was performed based {on the calculation} of synthetic spectra (CHIANTI database was used), with simultaneous {calculations of DEM} and density of the emitting plasma. More than 50 intense lines are present in the spectra that correspond to a temperature range of $T=0.5-16$ MK; most of the lines belong to Fe, Ni, Ca, Mg, Si ions. In all the considered flares intense hot lines from Ca XVII, Ca XVIII, Fe XX, Fe XXII, and Fe XXIV are observed. The calculated DEMs have a peak at $T \sim 10$ MK. The densities were determined using Fe XI - Fe XIII lines and averaged $6.5 \times 10^9$ cm$^{-3}$. We also discuss the identification, accuracy and major discrepancies of the spectral line intensity prediction.
