1. Anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity – primary preventive options. An overview

Abstract

Anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC) has been known since the 1970s but remains relevant, mainly due to the widespread use of anthracyclines in oncological practice. Currently, AIC is viewed as a prolonged and continuous process that starts with the initial dose at molecular and cellular levels and advances, ultimately resulting in cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Many contemporary studies aim to discover methods for early detection of anthracycline-related myocardial injury. Additionally, ongoing research focuses on agents for primary prevention of AIC, examining their effectiveness, place, and timing of administration. This review aims to present the available preventive options, interconnecting them with their mechanisms of action and the mechanisms of AIC. According to current recommendations, primary prevention is indicated for high- and very high-risk patients and includes general measures to lower cardiovascular risk, neurohormonal therapy, and statins. Regular cardiology assessments are a crucial component of heart damage prevention. Evidence of mild myocardial injury (deteriorated Global Longitudinal Strain and troponin release) justifi es cardioprotective measures. Some aspects remain unanswered, including whether early cardioprotection is required, as well as the role and effi cacy of sacubitril/valsartan and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) for AIC prevention. Physical activity is a promising method to reduce the cardiac damaging effects of anthracyclines.

2. Justification of the criteria requirements for fillers in mixtures for 3D construction printing

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Introduction. As part of the task to create new materials for additive technologies, an analysis of the situation was carried out, and a problem was identified with the lack of common approaches to selecting raw material components for mixtures. Theoretical concept. Based on the approaches of fundamental structure rheology, physicochemical mechanics of disperse systems, the theory of packing of granular media, we theoretically justified the criteria requirements for the characteristics of fillers and suggested quantitative criteria for their evaluation. It was proposed to use these quantitative criteria for a preliminary comprehensive assessment of fillers when designing compositions of mixtures for 3D construction printing. Materials and methods. The characteristics of the fillers were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy with a scanning electron microscope Thermo Scientific™ Phenom™ Desktop SEM and processing of images by the ParticleMetric software package as well as using laser granulometry with a laser analyser of particles Analysette 22. Results. We assessed the cement and 5 types of fillers that had different sizes and played different roles in the formation of the mixture properties. We also identified their estimated criterial characteristics, including the average particle diameter, granulometric constant, and particle shape coefficient. Boundary values of these characteristics were determined for particles of different morphology and dispersion degree. Conclusion. Based on the application of the suggested theoretical approaches, we determined the lines of research associated with obtaining experimental patterns of the impact of the criterial characteristics of fillers on the rheological characteristics of mixtures as well as with these characteristics according to their significance and justifying the requirements for the range of quantities of fillers depending on their size, shape, and granulometry.

3. Study of the strength regulation factors for the adhesive bonding 'cement matrix – reinforcing fiber' in composites for 3D-build printing

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Introduction. As part of the solution for the problem of creating a new class of materials for building additive technologies, cement composites reinforced with high-strength fiber, this work presents the results of experimental studies of the strength of the adhesive bonding between cement matrices and reinforcing fibers with different chemical compositions, diameters, and tensile strength. Materials and methods. Rheological properties of cement systems were studied using shear and squeeze rheometry, the method of micromechanical testing for determining the strength of the adhesive bonding “cement matrix – reinforcing fiber” based on the pull-out test, which involves pulling out the fiber from the cement matrix layer; after the pull-out test for all the studied systems, the microstructure of the contact surface “cement matrix – reinforcing fiber” was assessed using a Thermo Scientific™ Phenom™ Desktop SEM scanning electron microscope; the compressive strength of hardened cement paste-samples was determined using an INSTRON Sates 1500HDS testing machine. Results and discussions. It was established that the combination of strength characteristics of matrices, fibers, and adhesive strength at their interface allowed securing the required strength characteristics of reinforced construction composites. In the “cement matrix – carbon fiber” systems, the value of adhesive strength was 9 – 11 MPa; in the “cement matrix – steel wire” systems, the value of adhesive strength was 3 – 4 MPa. Conclusions. Matrices with viscosity modifiers containing nano- and micro-sized particles of SiO2 (complex nano-sized additive and metakaolin) are reasonable options for combinations of the “cement matrix – reinforcing fiber” components. Carbon fiber and steel wire are recommended to be used as reinforcing fibers.

Abstract

The development and application of multicomponent multifunctional additives for cement composites is an important research area since the use of such additives allows controlling both the rheological properties of fresh mixtures and the physical and mechanical properties of the hardened composite. In our study, we used several additives, including metakaolin and xanthan gum together with tetrapotassium pyrophosphate and a SiO2 based complex additive, to modify cementitious sand-based materials. We studied the peculiarities of the influence of these additives on the technological characteristics of mixtures (plasticity and shape retention) and the processes of setting, hydration, and hardening of the composite materials. The optimal values of plasticity, for stability, acceleration of hardening were demonstrated by sand-based systems modified with a complex nanosized additive and metakaolin. The hydration products in the such systems are mainly formed from low basic hydroxides. Metakaolin also results in the formation of ettringite. These systems demonstrate the optimal time of the beginning of setting and the maximum strength gain of the modified cementitious sand-based materials at 28 days. The optimal ratio of indicators of plasticity and shape retention of cement mixtures and the strength of composites based on them obtained by using the studied additives allows us to recommend using these additives in the innovative technologies for 3D-build printing.

Abstract

The development and application of multicomponent multifunctional additives for cement composites is an important research area since the use of such additives allows controlling both the rheological properties of the freshly prepared mixture and the physical and mechanical characteristics of the finished composite. This work proposes to use a multicomponent multifunctional additive with the composition of “SiO2 nanoparticle - superplasticiser - polypropylene fibre” for the modification of cement composite materials based on sand and chalky flour. We studied the peculiarities of the influence of this additive on the technological characteristics of mixtures (plasticity and form stability) and the processes of setting-up, hydration, structure formation, and strength gain of the composite materials. It was shown that the introduction of this additive allows increasing the plasticity limit and structural strength and reducing relative plastic deformations of the cement mixture at the manufacturing stage. At the same time, this additive accelerates the processes of setting-up, hydration, and strength gain of cement composites. It was proved that the increase in strength is due to the formation of a dense structure of hydrated new growths of the cement substance formed by phases of low and highly basic calcium silicate hydrates of various compositions and morphologies, as well as the absence of a portlandite phase.

6. The control of rheological behaviour for 3D-printable building mixtures: experimental evaluation of «nano» tools prospects.

Abstract

The extrudability and firm stability are the criteria rheological characteristics of building 3D printable mixtures. This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the rheological behaviour of fresh cement pastes as matrices for 3D printable mixtures. The squeezing test, with constant plate speed, has been used for determination plasticity of cement pastes as criteria of their extrudability. As a result, the typical rheological models of the fresh cement pastes have been identified. In addition, the value of plastic yield stress was evaluated as criteria for the extrusion process. The squeezing test, with constant strain rate, has been used for determination structural and plastic strength, plastic deformations as criteria for the ability of a 3D printable mixture to hold shape during multi-layer casting. It is shown that these properties are significantly controlled by the plasticizer and viscosity modifying additives as factors of changes of disperse system «cement + water» properties. It is established that electrolytes, nanodispersed adsorption-active inorganic modifying additives increase the plasticity of the fresh cement pastes. At the same time, the nanodispersed adsorption-active inorganic modifying additives develop plastic strength as criteria of firm stability. The introduction of inorganic polymers, inert to cement, improves the structural strength of fresh cement pastes but significantly reduces their plasticity. It is shown that the management of rheological behaviour of 3D printable mixtures should be based only by the complex using of chemical addi-tives such as electrolytes, plasticizers and nanodispersed inorganic viscosity modifying additives

Abstract

Statement of the problem. The sphere of scientific interests, major directions of activity and achievements of the scientific school of Academician of the RAASN Evgeny Mikhailovich Chernyshov are discussed. Results. In the second part of the memorial article in memory of Academician Ye.M. Chernyshov, the following areas of his scientific and creative activity are discussed: 1) development of scientific and practical foundations for managing the processes of structure formation and the quality of inorganic hardening systems and conglomerate building composites; 2) development of scientific and practical foundations for managing the operational stability and durability of building composites; 3) development of a concept, methodology and scientific and engineering solutions for the integrated and deep construction and technological utilization of industrial waste from industries; 4) analysis of modern regional technical and economic problems, development of methods for predicting effective directions for the development of the regional architectural and construction complex; 5) problems and technologies of modern educational activities in the field of training engineering personnel and scientific and pedagogical personnel of the highest qualification in the specialties of the construction and technological profile. Conclusions. Scientific and applied research of the school of academician Ye.M. Chernyshov are extremely diverse and versatile, they have undergone extensive practical approbation and are of high relevance in the modern construction industry.

Abstract

The skin as the biggest organ of human body plays the crucial role in protection and defence. Any kind of the skin injury leads to functional imbalance, whereas severe damage can be associated with human disability or even death. At the same time, the skin injury initiates the mechanisms of curbing damage and subsequently inducing repair. Repair of the skin wounds is a complex multiphase process that comprises the dynamic series of overlapping phases and involves numerous cell subsets, inflammatory mediators, cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, proteolytic enzymes and other signal molecules aimed at the closure of the skin defect and, as a result, the restoration of the integrity of the integument. The process of wound healing goes through several phases: inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. These phases are orchestrated by the interplay of the cells participating in each phase and molecules produced by these cells. Due to the growing body of scientific research, plenty of information about the cellular and molecular regularities of the healing process is available. However this does not reduce the number of patients with delayed healing or non-healing chronic wounds. That is why wound healing violation is still the actual problem of current medicine. The aim of this work was to assess the current data concerning the cellular determinants, and molecular mechanisms of the wound healing. In addition to discussing the mechanisms of the cell populations’ exchange, the authors address questions of the ability to predict and manage the wound healing. The new strategies, including biotechnologies and cellular technologies in particular are discussed. Further investigation of the kinetics of different cell lines will allow detailing the role and mechanisms of different intercellular cooperation that is a prerequisite for the development of a new process of wound management strategy.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation(AF) and diabetes mellitus is rising to epidemic proportions. We aimed to assess the impact of diabetes on the management and outcomes of patients with AF.METHODS: The EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry is a prospective, observational registry from 250 centres across 27 European countries. Outcomes of interest were as follows: i)rhythm control interventions; ii)quality of life; iii)healthcare resource utilisation; and iv)major adverse events.RESULTS: Of 11,028 patients with AF, the median age was 71 (63-77) years and 2537 (23.0%) had diabetes. Median follow-up was 24 months. Diabetes was related to increased use of anticoagulation but less rhythm control interventions. Using multivariable analysis, at 2-year follow-up, patients with diabetes were associated with greater levels of anxiety (p = 0.038) compared to those without diabetes. Overall, diabetes was associated with worse health during follow-up, as indicated by Health Utility Score and Visual Analogue Scale. Healthcare resource utilisation was greater with diabetes in terms of length of hospital stay (8.1 (±8.2) vs. 6.1 (±6.7) days); cardiology and internal medicine/general practitioner visits; and emergency room admissions. Diabetes was an independent risk factor of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE; HR 1.26 [95% CI, 1.04-1.52]), all-cause mortality (HR 1.28 [95% CI, 1.08-1.52]), and cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.41 [95% CI, 1.09-1.83]).CONCLUSION: In this contemporary AF cohort, diabetes was present in 1 in 4 patients and it served as an independent risk factor for reduced quality of life, greater healthcare resource utilisation and excess MACE, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. There was increased use of anticoagulation therapy in diabetes but with less rhythm control interventions.

Abstract

This paper presents experimental data illustrating the effect of viscosity modifiers on the structure formation in cement systems and their rheological characteristics and strength. It is shown that SiO2- and Al2O3 · SiO2-based nano- and microparticles, similar in crystal-chemical structure to newly formed hydrate phases, are the most effective viscosity modifiers, capable of reducing the setting and hardening times by a factor of 1.3–1.5 and raising the plastic strength of the cement systems by four to five times and their compressive strength by 30%. Xanthan gum and potassium pyrophosphate are effective modifiers for controlling the rheological characteristics of the cement systems, but they are incapable of activating structure formation and hardening processes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponins (cTn) have been reported to be predictors for adverse outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF), patients, but their actual use is still unclear.AIM: To assess the factors associated with cTn testing in routine practice and evaluate the association with outcomes.METHODS: Patients enrolled in the ESC-EHRA EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry were stratified into 3 groups according to cTn levels as (i) cTn not tested, (ii) cTn in range (≤99th percentile), (iii) cTn elevated (>99th percentile). The composite outcome of any thromboembolism /any acute coronary syndrome/cardiovascular (CV) death, defined as Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) and all-cause death were the main endpoints.RESULTS: Among 10 445 AF patients (median age 71 years, 40.3% females) cTn were tested in 2834 (27.1%). cTn was elevated in 904/2834 (31.9%) and in-range in 1930/2834 (68.1%) patients. Female sex, in-hospital enrollment, first-detected AF, CV risk factors, history of coronary artery disease, and atypical AF symptoms were independently associated with cTn testing. Elevated cTn were independently associated with a higher risk for MACE (Model 1, hazard ratio [HR] 1.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40-2.16, Model 2, HR 1.62, 95% CI 1.28-2.05; Model 3 HR 1.76, 95% CI 1.37-2.26) and all-cause death (Model 1, HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.21-1.74; Model 2, HR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12-1.66; Model 3, HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.12-1.71).CONCLUSIONS: Elevated cTn levels were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and adverse CV events. Clinical factors that might enhance the need to rule out CAD were associated with cTn testing.

Abstract

Tubular chrysotile and carbon nanoparticles have been shown to effectively influence the hydration and hardening kinetics, structure formation, and strength of cement systems. Similar in crystal-chemical structure to newly formed hydrated phases, chrysotile nanotubes are the most effective modifier, ensuring a factor of 30 increase in the rate of hydration and hardening processes and a factor of 3 increase in the strength of cement stone. Chemically inert with cement clinker minerals and clinker hydration products, carbon nanotubes ensure a factor of 9 increase in the rate of hydration and hardening processes and a factor of 1.5 increase in strength.

Abstract

We have developed a process for the sol–gel synthesis of a SiO2-based combined additive in the presence of superplasticizers and investigated the hydration kinetics, phase composition, microstructure, and strength characteristics of a modified cement stone. The results demonstrate that combined nanoadditives accelerate hydration processes, without significantly changing the structure of the modified cement stone. The observed strength gain in the samples is due to the rapid accumulation of cementitious substance during the hardening system formation process. The results of a detailed study of modified cement systems have been used to optimize the composition of the combined additive.

Abstract

The skin as the biggest organ of human body plays the crucial role in protection and defence. Any kind of the skin injury leads to functional imbalance, whereas severe damage can be associated with human disability or even death. At the same time, the skin injury initiates the mechanisms of curbing damage and subsequently inducing repair. Repair of the skin wounds is a complex multiphase process that comprises the dynamic series of overlapping phases and involves numerous cell subsets, inflammatory mediators, cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, proteolytic enzymes and other signal molecules aimed at the closure of the skin defect and, as a result, the restoration of the integrity of the integument. The process of wound healing goes through several phases: inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. These phases are orchestrated by the interplay of the cells participating in each phase and molecules produced by these cells. Due to the growing body of scientific research, plenty of information about the cellular and molecular regularities of the healing process is available. However this does not reduce the number of patients with delayed healing or non-healing chronic wounds. That is why wound healing violation is still the actual problem of current medicine. The aim of this work was to assess the current data concerning the cellular determinants, and molecular mechanisms of the wound healing. In addition to discussing the mechanisms of the cell populations’ exchange, the authors address questions of the ability to predict and manage the wound healing. The new strategies, including biotechnologies and cellular technologies in particular are discussed. Further investigation of the kinetics of different cell lines will allow detailing the role and mechanisms of different intercellular cooperation that is a prerequisite for the development of a new process of wound management strategy.

16. Drying and shrinkage of cement paste for 3D printable concrete

Abstract

The article presents the results of the study of drying and shrinkage of three compositions of cement paste different in the content of microsilica and superplasticiser within the range of variation typical for 3D printable concrete compositions. Plate samples kept in the environment with RH = 20, 30, 50, 70 % were used to simulate different drying conditions of material in thin layers of 3D printing structures. Rates of mass loss and shrinkage of hardened cement paste are compared with criterial parameters of their structure. It is shown that increased dosage of microsilica and superplasticiser ensures the reduction of total volume of pores, increase of the content of nanopores, while simultaneously the area and energy activity of solid phase surface increases. These factors secure the ability of cement paste to better retain the water in the structure under all drying conditions. As a result, reduction of absolute values of mass loss by 3 - 4 times and shrinkage by 2 times in comparison with reference system is ensured for cement paste with maximally dense structure. At the same time, there is a twofold increase of relative deformability on each percent of mass loss, which may lead to significant tension in 3D printing structures due to moisture gradient.

Abstract

The Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Akn564 [1] is a well known X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) included in our list of selected barred AGN. The galaxy was observed during the August 1996 season at the 2-m RCC telescope of the Astronomical Observatory “Rozhen” of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. ST-6 with standard Schott V, R, I filters were used. MIDAS'96 package was used for the data reduction with teh Richter's expansion for the surface photometry [2]. Most of the basic data for the galaxy are shown in the Table 1 below.

Abstract

Akn 564 (α1950 = 22h40m18.3s, δ1950 = 29°27′47″) is a Sy1.5G SBb type galaxy. According to Zwicky (1966) it has a photographic magnitude mp = 14.4 and a redshift of 0.025. The spectra of the galaxy were obtained at the 2.6-m telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory with a spectrograph having a dispersion of 100 A mm−1. They were processed with the help of SPEC and LONG packages integrated in MIDAS. As a result of the spectrophotometry we obtain the fluxes at λλ 4363, 4959, 5007 A: I(4363), I(4959), I(5007). The spectrum of the galaxy in λλ 4000–7000 is shown in Figure 1. We use the relation of the fluxes of those narrow forbidden emission lines: sensitive at a greater extent to the electron temperature Te than to the electron density ne. The value of R = 74.3 we got, having a typical value of ne = 5×105 cm−3 for the NLR (Narrow Line Region), leads to the estimation of a typical temperature of Te = 104 K.

Abstract

The most commonly invoked power source of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is accretion of galactic gas (probably through a disk) onto a supermassive black hole in the center of the nucleus (Rees 1984). As is well known, a black hole is completely defined by its mass and angular momentum. The unification scheme of active galaxies assumes that two known Seyfert types (Sy1 and Sy2) are not intrinsically different, i. e. their black hole masses, accretion rates and the whole internal structures are identical (Antonucci 1993) and observed differences are due just to a different orientation to the observer of the axisymmetrical central structure (central engine, BLR and thick torus, shadowing broad lines from some directions).

Abstract

The theoretical structural models of the chains from single‐domain globules as types I and M are presented. The chain of a model type M possessing a hexagonal cross section and with prevailing octahedral voids are typically for powders, obtained by chemical reduction process. The chain of a model type I possessing a pentagonal cross section and tetrahedral voids are established for powders prepared by the same process with application of dc magnetic field. Some experimental results and an interpretation of the physical properties of these powders confirming the differences between structural models: types I and M of chains of single‐domain globules are discussed.

Abstract

An overview on the variation of the magnetic properties, the grain size, the structure, and the heat of crystallization in the amorphous‐crystalline state transition of single‐domain metal particles depending on the element metals, boron, and the hydrogen contents is presented. The existence of the two types of chains of spheres, constituted from similar single‐domain particles, prepared with and without dc magnetic field, is discussed. The differences between these two kinds of chains are explained by measurements of the sizes and shapes of the voids, the magnetic properties, the heat of crystallization, the rate of a gaseous nitrogenation, the press densities, and Mossbauer spectra of the samples. The essentially different states of the one single‐domain particle and the complex of single‐domain particles in the chains are discussed according to the application of the powders.

Abstract

Background: Ovarian carcinoma (OC) is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, necessitating a multimodal approach that includes surgery and systemic therapy. The incidence of OC is approximately five times higher in women over 65 years of age. Cardiovascular comorbidities and type 2 diabetes mellitus, both prevalent at this age, can influence therapeutic strategy and have an adverse effect on survival., Objectives: Our study aimed to determine the impact of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus on survival in advanced ovarian cancer., Materials and Methods: From 2004 to 2012, we retrospectively studied 104 patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (FIGO stage II-IV) who underwent surgical treatment at the Gynecology Clinic, St. Anna University Hospital, Varna, Bulgaria. Patients were followed for an average of 90 (52-129) months. We divided the study population into two groups: those with concurrent cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus (CVD) and those without these comorbidities (No-CVD group). Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared between groups using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Cardiovascular comorbidities and diabetes mellitus were evaluated for their prognostic value for survival using multivariate Cox proportional regression analysis adjusted for age, stage of OC, grade and histological type of the tumor, ascites presence, residual tumor size (RT), performance status, and type of hysterectomy., Results: The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed reduced OS and DSS in the CVD group compared to the No-CVD group. The median OS was 24.5 months (95% CI 18.38 months) and 38 months (95% CI 26, not reached), respectively (Log-rank p = 0.045). The median DSS was 25.5 months (95% CI 19.39 months) and 48 months (95% CI 28, not reached), respectively (Log-rank p = 0.033). The Cox regression multivariate analysis established a lower (by 68%) overall survival rate for the CVD patient group than the No-CVD group, approaching statistical significance (HR 1.68, 95% CI 0.99, 2.86, p = 0.055). Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes were associated with a 79% reduction in DSS (HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.02, 3.13, p = 0.041) and a twofold increase in the risk of disease progression (HR 2.05, 95% CI 1.25, 3.37, p = 0.005)., Conclusions: According to our study, cardiovascular comorbidities and diabetes may adversely affect OC survival. Optimal control of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and their risk factors may be beneficial for patients with advanced OC. Further research involving a larger patient population is necessary to establish these comorbidities as independent prognostic factors.

25. Pseudomyxoma peritonei of appendiceal origin mimicking ovarian cancer - a case report with literature review.

Abstract

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare and uncommon condition, characterized by the presence of mucinous ascites in the abdominal cavity. The most common cause of PMP is mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix, followed by neoplasms of the ovary, endocervix, fallopian tube, alimentary organs, urachus, urinary bladder, lung, mucinous cyst of the spleen, and breast. Herein, we report a case of a 64-year-old postmenopausal woman (gravida 2, para 2) who presented at the department of gynecology with a short history of nausea and abdominal distention. Abdominal and vaginal ultrasonography showed a large amount of free fluid in the pelvis with hyperechoic echogenicity and right pelvic tumor with mixed echogenicity. Computed tomography demonstrated the presence of a heterogeneous, hypodense mass, without contrast enhancement, located on the right side of the pelvis, near the right ovary. Laparotomy was performed. Revision of the abdominal cavity revealed a large amount of yellow gelatinous mucinous ascites - approximately 1.5 l. A tumor (6 x 7 cm in diameter), arising from the appendix and located in the pouch of Douglas near the right ovary, was observed. Histopathology examination revealed poorly differentiated mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma, comprising up to 50% signet ring cells. Gastrointestinal tumors such as appendiceal neoplasms combined with PMP may mimic ovarian carcinomas. Computed tomography, abdominal/vaginal ultrasonography and tumor marker levels (carcino-embryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 19.9, carbohydrate antigen Ca-125) may establish the diagnosis. 26. Origin of the metastable stability in flavylium multistate systems.

Abstract

Metastable states regarding the network of chemical reactions involving flavylium compounds were investigated as well as the role they may play in models for optical memories capable of write-read-erase. A necessary requirement to achieve metastable states in flavylium systems is the existence of a high cis-trans isomerization barrier, as in 4'-hydroxyflavylium described through this paper. In an optical memory, the metastable state could be the signal to be detected upon the write step. In that case the autoerase is prevented by the metastable state. Conversely, the metastable state may be the initial state and prevents the auto and unwanted write step. The compound 4'-hydroxyflavylium offers the possibility of achieving both of these two situations, depending on the sequence of the pH stimuli prior to light absorption. In this work the pH dependent distribution of the flavylium species of the network in the presence of β-cyclodextrin was calculated. Improvement of the performance of the photochromic system in the presence of β-cyclodextrin was observed.

Abstract

Macromolecular conjugates of a dinuclear platinum complex with a spermidine bridge were synthesized using poly(oxyethylene H-phosphonate)s as precursor polymer. The complex species were attached to the polymer chain via a phosphoramide bond resulting from the reaction between the H-phosphonate groups and the middle amino group of the spermidine moiety. (1)H and (31)P{H} DOSY NMR spectral data were used to prove the conjugation reaction and to characterize the new species. The conjugates exhibited profound cytotoxicity in a panel of five chemosensitive human tumor cell lines and one cisplatin-resistant model (HL-60/CDDP), and were found to induce apoptotic cell death. A flow cytometric analysis encountered a cisplatin-dissimilar modulation of the cell cycle progression in KG-1 leukemic cells, following exposure to the dinuclear agents. Abstract

Objectives: This study evaluated the percentages of continuous margins (%CM) and fracture strength (FS) of crowns made out from blocs of leucite-reinforced ceramic (IPS Empress CAD) and luted with a representative self-adhesive cement (RelyX Unicem) under four contaminating agents: saliva, water, blood, a haemostatic solution containing aluminium chloride (pH= 0.8) and a control group with no contamination., Study Design: %CM at both tooth-cement (TC) and cement-crown (CC) interfaces were determined before and after a fatigue test consisting of 600'000 chewing loads and 1'500 temperature cycles changing from 5⁰ C to 50⁰ C. Load to fracture was recorded on fatigued specimens. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare %CM and FS between the five groups with a level of confidence of 95%., Results: At the TC interface, no significant differences in marginal adaptation before loading could be detected between groups. After loading, a significant marginal degradation was observed in the group contaminated with aluminium chloride (52 ± 22 %CM) in respect to the other groups. No significant differences in %CM could be detected between the groups contaminated with saliva, water, blood and the control. At the CC interface, no significant differences in marginal adaptation were observed between the groups. The FS on loaded specimens was around 1637N, with no significant differences between groups as well., Conclusions: An adverse interaction of the highly acidic haemostatic agent with either dentin or the self-adhesive cement could explain the specimens' marginal degradation. The self-adhesive cement tested in this study was no sensitive to moisture contamination either with saliva, water or blood.
