1. Investigation of Brown Rice Losses in the Paddy Drying Process

Abstract

IntroductionOn the field and in the paddy milling factory dryer losses have always been challenging issues in the rice industry. Different forms of losses in brown rice may occur depending on the field and factory conditions. To reduce the losses, proper management during pre-harvest, harvesting, and post-harvest operations is essential. In this study, different on-field drying and tempering methods were investigated to detect different forms of brown rice losses.Materials and MethodsThe present study was conducted on the most common Hashemi paddy variety during the 2019-2020 season in Talesh, Rezvanshahr, and Masal cities in the Guilan province, Iran with 0.2 hectares and 5 paddy milling factory dryers. On the fields, the method and date of tillage, irrigation, and transplanting used in all experimental units were the same. Moreover, the same amount of fertilizer and similar spraying methods were used across all experiments. For the pre-drying process on the fields, the following three pre-drying methods were applied on the harvest day: A1) The paddies were spread on the cut stems for insolating, A2) The paddies were stacked and stored after being placed on the cut stems for 5h, and A3) The paddies were covered with plastic wrap and stored after 5h of insolating. The first method (A1) is the most common in the area and was chosen as the control treatment. For the second step of the process, the time interval between the on-field pre-drying and threshing was considered: B1) 14 to 19h post-harvest; B2) 20 to 24h post-harvest, and B3) 25 to 29h post-harvest. Afterward, methods A1 to A3 were combined with methods B1 to B3 and feed into an axial flow-thresher at 10 kg min-1, 550 rpm PTO, and two levels of moisture content at 19 and 26 percent (% w.b). The third process was two-stage or three-stage tempering for 10 or 15 hours resulting in four levels (C1 to C4) and was done in the conventional batch type dryer under temperatures of 40 and 50 ˚C and airspeeds of 0.5 and 0.8 m s-1 in paddy milling factories. At the end of each process, a 100g sample was oven-dried for 48h and a microscope achromatic objective 40x was used to detect incomplete horizontal or vertical cracks, tortoise pattern cracks, and immature and chalky grains. The equilibrium moisture content was determined to be 7.3 percent. Losses properties were analyzed using a completely randomized factorial design with a randomized block followed by Tukey's HSD test at the 5% probability and comparisons among the three replications were made.Results and DiscussionResults demonstrated that the stack and plastic drying methods significantly increased the percentage of losses. In the plastic drying method, the percentage of chalky grains and tortoise pattern cracks was higher than other forms of loss. In the first process, irrespective of the pre-drying method, the losses were reduced at a lower level of moisture content. At the end of the first stage, losses in the spreading method were significantly lower at 19% moisture content. Threshing the plastic-wrapped paddies after 14 to 19 hours at 19% moisture content resulted in the maximum threshing loss of 8.446% and over half of the grains were chalky or had tortoise pattern cracks. The threshing loss was halved (4.443%) for paddies threshed 25 to 29h after spreading at a moisture content of 26%. The mean of losses in the second step of the process were 7.229, 5.585, and 5.156% for the time interval between the on-field pre-drying and threshing of 14 to 19h, 20 to 24h, and 25 to 29h, respectively. In the last step of the process in paddy milling factory dryers, there was no significant difference in the minimum percent of losses between 10 and 15 hours of three-stage tempering at 40 °C and with 0.5 m s-1 airspeed. Furthermore, maximum total losses with the most incomplete horizontal and vertical cracks occurred in the two-stage 10h tempering at 50 °C and with 0.5 and 0.8 m s-1 airspeed.ConclusionFood security has always been a critical matter in developing countries. Furthermore, identifying the source of losses in the fields and the factories is one way to reduce losses and achieve food security. Stacking or wrapping the paddies in plastic after pre-drying on the fields for 5h is not recommended in terms of its effect on increasing the percentage of brown rice losses. Additionally, due to the importance of factory dryer scheduling in the management of the losses, it is recommended to use a three-stage 10h tempering at 40 °C and with 0.5 m s-1 airspeed.

Abstract

Managing cultural changes in the virtual space is inevitable since it is a place of conflict between power flows, especially the reputation system. Achieving desirable and sustainable cultural changes requires attention to changeability requirements. It means that ignoring these requirements can affect the process and content of changes. Based on this, the purpose of this article is to investigate and answer the question: What are the requirements of cultural changes through the fame of celebrities in the virtual space? The research is based on Husserl's descriptive phenomenology as well as Colaizzi's method (1978). The research population is those who are active in various fields of science, art, sports, and virtual space activism. Semi-structured and in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 people as a research sample using the criterion-dependent purposeful sampling method until the level of data saturation. The data were validated through external auditors, returning to the interviewees, and in-depth descriptions. The findings showed that the requirements of cultural changes through celebrities in the virtual space can be found at structural and content levels: in the dimensions of optimal networking, control of structural resistance, family changes, and social capital building in the form of structural requirements, and in the dimensions of cultural flow, cultural leadership and attention to social status in the form of content requirements. The results, in addition to showing the role of celebrities in cultural changes, emphasize the factors facilitating the influence of celebrity culture in the Iranian society.

Abstract

Background: The issue of milk quality appears to be vital due to its nutritional value and since raw milk can be regarded as an appropriate environment for the growth of several pathogens by producing an enterotoxin. The aim of present study is to investigate enterotoxin-producing genes (sea, seb, sec, and sed) from Staphylococcus aureus isolated from raw traditional and pasteurized milk in Tehran, Iran. Methods: One hundred and fifty samples of raw traditional milk supplied in five districts of Tehran were collected and simultaneously15 pasteurized milk samples from various brands were prepared and examined phenotypically and bio-chemically for the existence of S. aureus. The presence of sea, seb, sec, sed genes was assessed by Polymerase Chain Reaction and ultimately the antibiotic residue was measured with a commercial kit. Results: In this study, 32 (21.3%) samples of raw traditional milk and one sample (6.7%) of pasteurized milk samples were infected with S. aureus. The frequency of presence of sea, seb, sec, and sed genes regarded to be: 9 (28.12%), 14 (43.75%), 6 (18.75%), 2 (6.25%), respectively however sec gene failed to identify. Basically 38 (33.25%) of raw traditional milk samples as well as 5 (33.33%) of pasteurized milk included antibiotic residue. Conclusion: The high prevalence of S. aureus comprising enterotoxin genes in raw traditional milk is considered as a severe warning to the community and highlights the need for a high quality product. 4. Analyzing the educational challenges in the metaverse

Abstract

The ever-increasing use of information and communication technologies and virtual networks has created a possibility for educational development and transformation in the metaverse context. This possibility is related to the infrastructural development capabilities on the one hand and the content and structural aspects of education in society on the other hand. Despite its positive and negative aspects, this subject requires serious attention to achieve meta-education. This study, by taking into account the perspectives of experts, intends to analyze the challenges of education in the metaverse. Here, a qualitative content analysis method was adopted, with the data collection tool being semi-structured interviews with 12 people until reaching the saturation level. The data was analyzed through an inductive approach and the reliability of contents was checked by "independent coders and expert group" method. The findings showed that the educational challenges in the metaverse include themes such as deconstruction of education, gamification, the conflict of diversity and singularity, the challenge of unknownness, the intellectual property interest, educational justice, perceived compatibility, the challenge of conflict, dependence and post-realism learning. It seems that the capabilities of using the educational metaverse in Iran are still not available due to the aforementioned challenges. Since capacities and capabilities are necessary for educational development, preparing grounds for its use by the next generation through a planning based on the findings of this paper can greatly increase the utilization rate of its positive aspects.

Abstract

This study uses real data of Bushehr nuclear power plant (BNPP), and by soft computing methods and without using the data of self-powered neutron detectors (SPNDs), the maximum linear heat rate of BNPP is estimated. The efficient learning algorithms of artificial neural network (ANN), including Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) and Bayesian regularization (BR) in combination with different features selection techniques including Pearson, Spearman, and Kendall’s tau, are employed to estimate the target parameter. Results show that the proposed method is appropriate for estimating the maximum linear heat rate. Given the importance of this parameter in terms of safety and the fact that its excessive increase actuates the shutdown signal of the reactor, the use of the appropriated approaches such as the present study can increase the safety of the plant and improve Defense-In-Depth (DID).

Abstract

Displacement monitoring is a critical control for risks associated with potentially sudden slope failures. Instrument measurements are, however, obscured by the presence of scatter. Data filtering methods aim to reduce the scatter and therefore enhance the performance of early warning systems (EWSs). The effectiveness of EWSs depends on the lag time between the onset of acceleration and its detection by the monitoring system such that a timely warning is issued for the implementation of consequence mitigation strategies. This paper evaluates the performance of three filtering methods (simple moving average, Gaussian-weighted moving average, and Savitzky–Golay) and considers their comparative advantages and disadvantages. The evaluation utilized six levels of randomly generated scatter on synthetic data, as well as high-frequency global navigation satellite system (GNSS) displacement measurements at the Ten-mile landslide in British Columbia, Canada. The simple moving average method exhibited significant disadvantages compared to the Gaussian-weighted moving average and Savitzky–Golay approaches. This paper presents a framework to evaluate the adequacy of different algorithms for minimizing monitoring data scatter.

Abstract

Tremor is thought to be an effect of oscillatory activity within the sensorimotor network. To date, the underlying pathological brain networks are not fully understood. Disentangling tremor activity from voluntary motor output and sensorimotor feedback systems is challenging. To better understand the intrinsic sensorimotor fingerprint underlying tremor, we aimed to disentangle the sensorimotor system into driving (motor) and feedback/compensatory (sensory) neuronal involvement, and aimed to pinpoint tremor activity in essential tremor (ET) and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (PD) with a novel closed-loop approach.Eighteen ET patients, 14 tremor-dominant PD patients, and 18 healthy controls were included. An MR-compatible wrist manipulator was employed during functional MRI (fMRI) while muscle activity during (in)voluntary movements was concurrently recorded using electromyography (EMG). Tremor was quantified based on EMG and correlated to brain activity. Participants performed three tasks: an active wrist motor task, a passive wrist movement task, and rest (no wrist movement).The results in healthy controls proved that our experimental paradigm activated the expected motor and sensory networks separately using the active (motor) and passive (sensory) task. ET patients showed similar patterns of activation within the motor and sensory networks. PD patients had less activity during the active motor task in the cerebellum and basal ganglia compared to ET and healthy controls. EMG showed that in ET, tremor fluctuations correlated positively with activity in the inferior olive region, and that in PD tremor fluctuations correlated positively with cerebellar activity.Our novel approach with an MR-compatible wrist manipulator, allowed to investigate the involvement of the motor and sensory networks separately, and as such to better understand tremor pathophysiology. In ET sensorimotor network function did not differ from healthy controls. PD showed less motor-related activity. Focusing on tremor, our results indicate involvement of the inferior olive in ET tremor modulation, and cerebellar involvement in PD tremor modulation.

Abstract

The economic actors` behavior could not be understood in isolation, without considering the influence of cultural factors. Although there has been less attention paid to the role of culture in economic activism, it is of strategic importance, especially among the youth because culture can affect their behavior valuation, behavior purpose, and behavior standard. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to investigate the cultural perception of money among the young generation. Analysis is based on a subtype of qualitative method: content analysis of the interviews. The study population includes young economic activists aged between 18 and 32 years. The targeted sampling is based on criteria and non-homogeneous method, reaching the theoretical saturation point with 12 subjects. Data are collected using semi-structured interviews. The credibility of the collected data is confirmed by credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability indexes, as well as by in depth description, reference to interviewees, and two encoders. The findings show that money is culturally perceived as an end, an indicator of social conflict, an alternative to happiness, and a benchmark for social credibility among the young generation; on the other hand, these perceptions could be attributed to priority of money function over money usage, educational conflict, the dominance of thrift, overview of values and money-based identity, will power, the social trap of money, and the ambiguity within monetary authorities. In general, findings show that ambiguity and contradiction in young people's understanding has caused the perception of money to be changed compared to the past, enriching its function.

Abstract

Absorption cooling systems have been investigated for many years due to their ability to use low-grade heat instead of electricity as the energy source. The aim of this work is to advance the performance of a single-effect Lithium bromide/water absorption cooling system. Taking the generator and evaporator temperatures as variables, the system is optimized to maximize exergetic and energetic efficiencies at different operational conditions using a multi-objective–multi-variable Genetic Algorithm. The Group Method of Data Handling neural network approach is adopted to derive correlations between the design variables and operational parameters. Finally, the system is coupled to evacuated tube solar collectors and compared to a similar system. The results reflect a maximum improvement in energetic and exergetic efficiencies of about 9.1% and 3.0%, respectively. This translates into savings of 187 dollars for every square meter of solar collector at present time. This improvement is achieved by decreasing the mean temperature of the generator by 6.2 °C and increasing the mean temperature of the evaporator by 1.6 °C. In the case of applying low-grade heat such as solar energy, it brings about both an improvement in the thermodynamic performances and a reduction in the generator temperature.

10. Effect of Light Intensity and Foliar Application of Calcium Chloride and Naphthalene Acetic Acid on Growth and Yield of Strawberry cv. Paros

Abstract

The role of calcium in the growth, fruiting and preservation of the quality of strawberries, has been well known. In this research, effect of calcium chloride along with naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) under shade conditions on growth, yield and quality of Paros strawberry was investigated. The experiment was a factorial with two factors of light intensity (normal light and shade condition) and calcium chloride and NAA treatment (control, 0.75% calcium chloride, 25 mg/L NAA, and 0.75% calcium chloride + 25 mg/L NAA). The results showed that spraying NAA and calcium chloride under shade conditions increased plant growth when compared with light conditions. Under normal light conditions, calcium chloride treatment increased the fruit diameter and yield in comparison with control treatment under light and shade conditions. The highest fruit firmness (342.0 N/cm2) was observed in the treatment of calcium chloride under light and shade conditions. NAA treatment under shade conditions resulted in higher anthocyanin. The treatment of calcium chloride + NAA in normal light condition showed higher total phenol (1.12 mg/g FW) and antioxidant activity (72.12%). Calcium chloride treatment increased the amount of calcium in the fruits by nearly 50%. Moreover, calcium chloride treatment in shade condition led to a 12% increase in calcium content of petiole, in comparison to those of control in shade condition. Calcium chloride along with NAA treatment increased leaf calcium compared to control treatment in light conditions. From the present results, it can be concluded that treatment of plant by calcium chloride alone in both light and shade conditions can increase the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of fruits of Paros cultivar of strawberry. Similarly, in some conditions, the use of NAA can, increase the absorption of calcium by the leaves.

Abstract

We report the observation of gravitational waves from two compact binary coalescences in LIGO’s and Virgo’s third observing run with properties consistent with neutron star–black hole (NSBH) binaries. The two events are named GW200105_162426 and GW200115_042309, abbreviated as GW200105 and GW200115; the first was observed by LIGO Livingston and Virgo and the second by all three LIGO–Virgo detectors. The source of GW200105 has component masses $8.{9}_{-1.5}^{+1.2}$ and $1.{9}_{-0.2}^{+0.3}\,{M}_{\odot }$ , whereas the source of GW200115 has component masses $5.{7}_{-2.1}^{+1.8}$ and $1.{5}_{-0.3}^{+0.7}\,{M}_{\odot }$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The probability that the secondary’s mass is below the maximal mass of a neutron star is 89%–96% and 87%–98%, respectively, for GW200105 and GW200115, with the ranges arising from different astrophysical assumptions. The source luminosity distances are ${280}_{-110}^{+110}$ and ${300}_{-100}^{+150}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ , respectively. The magnitude of the primary spin of GW200105 is less than 0.23 at the 90% credible level, and its orientation is unconstrained. For GW200115, the primary spin has a negative spin projection onto the orbital angular momentum at 88% probability. We are unable to constrain the spin or tidal deformation of the secondary component for either event. We infer an NSBH merger rate density of ${45}_{-33}^{+75}\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ when assuming that GW200105 and GW200115 are representative of the NSBH population or ${130}_{-69}^{+112}\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ under the assumption of a broader distribution of component masses.

Abstract

We report on gravitational-wave discoveries from compact binary coalescences detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo in the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between 1 April 2019 15∶00 UTC and 1 October 2019 15∶00 UTC. By imposing a false-alarm-rate threshold of two per year in each of the four search pipelines that constitute our search, we present 39 candidate gravitational-wave events. At this threshold, we expect a contamination fraction of less than 10%. Of these, 26 candidate events were reported previously in near-real time through gamma-ray coordinates network notices and circulars; 13 are reported here for the first time. The catalog contains events whose sources are black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8, as well as events whose components cannot be unambiguously identified as black holes or neutron stars. For the latter group, we are unable to determine the nature based on estimates of the component masses and spins from gravitational-wave data alone. The range of candidate event masses which are unambiguously identified as binary black holes (both objects ≥3 M_{⊙}) is increased compared to GWTC-1, with total masses from approximately 14 M_{⊙} for GW190924_021846 to approximately 150 M_{⊙} for GW190521. For the first time, this catalog includes binary systems with significantly asymmetric mass ratios, which had not been observed in data taken before April 2019. We also find that 11 of the 39 events detected since April 2019 have positive effective inspiral spins under our default prior (at 90% credibility), while none exhibit negative effective inspiral spin. Given the increased sensitivity of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, the detection of 39 candidate events in approximately 26 weeks of data (approximately 1.5 per week) is consistent with GWTC-1.

13. Performance of Holstein calves receiving equal quantities of milk at fixed or variable amounts per day during milk-feeding period

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of feeding equal quantities of milk during the pre-weaning period through different milk-feeding regimes on calf growth, starter intake and selected blood metabolites. In experiment 1, 44 female Holstein calves (3 days of age and 39.2±4.3 kg of BW) were distributed randomly to one of two milk-feeding programs (1 calf per pen; 22 pens per treatment group): (1) consistent (CONS; 6 l/day of milk from days 3 to 60 and 3 l/day from days 61 to 65 of age) or (2) step-up/step-down (SUSD; 5 l/day of milk from days 3 to 15, 8 l/day from days 16 to 40, 6 l/day from days 41 to 50, 3 l/day from days 51 to 60 and then 2 l/day from days 61 to 65 of age). No difference between treatments was observed in starter consumption, feed efficiency, hip width and heart girth. However, pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG) tended to be greater in CONS than in SUSD calves (0.78 v. 0.70 kg/day; P=0.07). Blood β-hydroxybutyrate at day 45 (pre-weaning) was lower in SUSD than in CONS calves (0.14 v. 0.21±0.013 mmol/l). In experiment 2, 26 male Holstein calves (3 days of age and 39.4±4.1 kg of BW) were assigned at random to one of two milk-feeding protocols (1 calf per pen; 13 pens per treatment group): (1) consistent (CONS; (7 l/day of milk from days 3 to 40 and 2 l/day from days 41 to 45 of age) or (2) step-down (STD; 8 l/day of milk from days 3 to 30, 4 l/day from days 31 to 40 and 2 l/day from days 41 to 45 of age). The milk-feeding program had no effect on the performance measurements, with the exception that ADG (days 15 to 30), starter intake (days 30 to 45) and heart girth (day 45) were greater in STD than in CONS calves. In conclusion, it appears that if the total amount of milk intake is held constant over the course of milk-feeding period, the method of milk feeding would have negligible effects on calf performance.

Abstract

In recent years, developing target detection algorithms has received growing interest in hyperspectral images. In comparison to the classification field, few studies have been done on dimension reduction or band selection for target detection in hyperspectral images. This study presents a simple method to remove bad bands from the images in a supervised manner for sub-pixel target detection. The proposed method is based on comparing field and laboratory spectra of the target of interest for detecting bad bands. For evaluation, the target detection blind test dataset is used in this study. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve efficiency of the two well-known target detection methods, ACE and CEM.

Abstract

In this study the effect of different levels of moisture content of maize grits (10, 13, 16 and 19%) as an attribute of physicochemical properties of extruder-derived puffed products, was investigated. The results showed that with increasing maize grits' moisture content, water absorption index (WAI) and water solubility index (WSI) were decreased. Moreover, with changing in feed moisture content from 10 to 16%, the volume and sectional expansion index (SEI) increased but further increase of moisture content to 19% caused a reduction in these parameters. The textural tests also revealed that with increase in moisture content, the compression energy (Nmm), maximum force (N) and time to achieve the first major peak (s) were increased but the number of peaks was decreased. With increase in the moisture content, specific mechanical energy (SME) was decreased, due probably to the reduction in the viscosity of melt. With increase in the moisture content the L and b values were increased but the value of the samples were decreased due to the reduction of Maillard reaction rate. Our data confirms that the moisture content of maize grits may play an important role in the quality of produced extruded snacks and a high quality product can be achieved by optimizing this parameter. In this research, the maximum volume of the extruder product was obtained in 16% of moisture level.

Abstract

Magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via a simple chemical reaction using precipitation method. The obtained materials consist of ferrite particles with average diameter of 25 nm. The effect of different surfactants such as cationic, anionic and neutral on the morphology of the products was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the structure and particle size of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Magnetic properties of the product were also examined by vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature. By using ammonia and sodium hydroxide cobalt ferrite nanoparticles exhibit different super-paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic behaviors respectively.

Abstract

In this study, we present a new higher-order scheme without memory for simple zeros which has two major advantages. The first one is that each member of our scheme is derivative free and the second one is that the present scheme is capable of producing many new optimal family of eighth-order methods from every 4-order optimal derivative free scheme (available in the literature) whose first substep employs a Steffensen or a Steffensen-like method. In addition, the theoretical and computational properties of the present scheme are fully investigated along with the main theorem, which demonstrates the convergence order and asymptotic error constant. Moreover, the effectiveness of our scheme is tested on several real-life problems like Van der Waal’s, fractional transformation in a chemical reactor, chemical engineering, adiabatic flame temperature, etc. In comparison with the existing robust techniques, the iterative methods in the new family perform better in the considered test examples. The study of dynamics on the proposed iterative methods also confirms this fact via basins of attraction applied to a number of test functions.

Abstract

Two new families of multipoint without memory iterative methods with eighth- and sixteenth-orders are constructed using the symbolic software Mathematica. The key idea in constructing such methods is based on producing some generic suitable functions to reduce the functional evaluations and increase the order of convergence along the computational efficiency. Again by applying Mathematica, we design a hybrid algorithm to capture all the simple real solutions of nonlinear equations in an interval. The application of the new schemes in producing fractal pictures is also furnished.

Abstract

Rapidly spinning neutron stars are promising sources of continuous gravitational waves. Detecting such a signal would allow probing of the physical properties of matter under extreme conditions. A significant fraction of the known pulsar population belongs to binary systems. Searching for unknown neutron stars in binary systems requires specialized algorithms to address unknown orbital frequency modulations. We present a search for continuous gravitational waves emitted by neutron stars in binary systems in early data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors using the semicoherent, GPU-accelerated, binaryskyhough pipeline. The search analyzes the most sensitive frequency band of the LIGO detectors, 50–300 Hz. Binary orbital parameters are split into four regions, comprising orbital periods of three to 45 days and projected semimajor axes of two to 40 light seconds. No detections are reported. We estimate the sensitivity of the search using simulated continuous wave signals, achieving the most sensitive results to date across the analyzed parameter space.

Abstract

On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85 (+21,−14) Mꙩ and 66 (+17,−18) Mꙩ (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below 65 M⊙. We calculate the mass of the remnant to be 142 (+28,−16) Mꙩ, which can be considered an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The luminosity distance of the source is 5.3 (+2.4,−2.6) Gpc, corresponding to a redshift of 0.82 (+0.28,−0.34) . The inferred rate of mergers similar to GW190521 is 0.13 (+0.30,−0.11) Gpc^(−3) per yr.

Abstract

The gravitational-wave signal GW190521 is consistent with a binary black hole (BBH) merger source at redshift 0.8 with unusually high component masses, 85 (+21,-14) Mꙩ and 66 (+17,-18) Mꙩ, compared to previously reported events, and shows mild evidence for spin-induced orbital precession. The primary falls in the mass gap predicted by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova theory, in the approximate range 65–120 Mꙩ. The probability that at least one of the black holes in GW190521 is in that range is 99.0%. The final mass of the merger (142 (+28,-16) Mꙩ) classifies it as an intermediate-mass black hole. Under the assumption of a quasi-circular BBH coalescence, we detail the physical properties of GW190521’s source binary and its post-merger remnant, including component masses and spin vectors. Three different waveform models, as well as direct comparison to numerical solutions of general relativity, yield consistent estimates of these properties. Tests of strong-field general relativity targeting the merger-ringdown stages of the coalescence indicate consistency of the observed signal with theoretical predictions. We estimate the merger rate of similar systems to be 0.13 (+0.30,-0.11)Gp/cu.c yr. We discuss the astrophysical implications of GW190521 for stellar collapse and for the possible formation of black holes in the pair-instability mass gap through various channels: via (multiple) stellar coalescences, or via hierarchical mergers of lower-mass black holes in star clusters or in active galactic nuclei. We find it to be unlikely that GW190521 is a strongly lensed signal of a lower-mass black hole binary merger. We also discuss more exotic possible sources for GW190521, including a highly eccentric black hole binary, or a primordial black hole binary.

Abstract

The spread of SARS-CoV-2 can be considered one of the most complicated patterns with a large number of uncertainties and nonlinearities. Therefore, analysis and prediction of the distribution of this virus are one of the most challenging problems, affecting the planning and managing of its impacts. Although different vaccines and drugs have been proved, produced, and distributed one after another, several new fast-spreading SARS-CoV-2 variants have been detected. This is why numerous techniques based on artificial intelligence (AI) have been recently designed or redeveloped to forecast these variants more effectively. The focus of such methods is on deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML), and they can forecast nonlinear trends in epidemiological issues appropriately. This short review aims to summarize and evaluate the trustworthiness and performance of some important AI-empowered approaches used for the prediction of the spread of COVID-19. Sixty-five preprints, peer-reviewed papers, conference proceedings, and book chapters published in 2020 were reviewed. Our criteria to include or exclude references were the performance of these methods reported in the documents. The results revealed that although methods under discussion in this review have suitable potential to predict the spread of COVID-19, there are still weaknesses and drawbacks that fall in the domain of future research and scientific endeavors.

Abstract

Background: The issue of milk quality appears to be vital due to its nutritional value and since raw milk can be regarded as an appropriate environment for the growth of several pathogens by producing an enterotoxin. The aim of present study is to investigate enterotoxin-producing genes (sea, seb, sec, and sed) from Staphylococcus aureus isolated from raw traditional and pasteurized milk in Tehran, Iran. Methods: One hundred and fifty samples of raw traditional milk supplied in five districts of Tehran were collected and simultaneously15 pasteurized milk samples from various brands were prepared and examined phenotypically and bio-chemically for the existence of S. aureus. The presence of sea, seb, sec, sed genes was assessed by Polymerase Chain Reaction and ultimately the antibiotic residue was measured with a commercial kit. Results: In this study, 32 (21.3%) samples of raw traditional milk and one sample (6.7%) of pasteurized milk samples were infected with S. aureus. The frequency of presence of sea, seb, sec, and sed genes regarded to be: 9 (28.12%), 14 (43.75%), 6 (18.75%), 2 (6.25%), respectively however sec gene failed to identify. Basically 38 (33.25%) of raw traditional milk samples as well as 5 (33.33%) of pasteurized milk included antibiotic residue. Conclusion: The high prevalence of S. aureus comprising enterotoxin genes in raw traditional milk is considered as a severe warning to the community and highlights the need for a high quality product. Abstract

Despite several studies having been conducted to examine organizational image from a business perspective, there has not been adequate research in the area of perceived image in nonprofit organizations such as universities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the factors contributing to university image, from the postgraduate students' point of view. In addition, the impact of the students' perceived university image on their organizational trust was examined. The population of this study consisted of postgraduate students in 10 of the top Iranian universities. Questionnaires were used to collect the required data. The findings indicated the difference between current practices and ideal values of the factors contributing to the university image. Based on our findings, the factors contributing to university image range from internal and international reputation, university members, and academic planning, to university environment. Furthermore, we found that university image has a significant impact on students' trust in their university.

Abstract

In this study the nonlinear optical properties of Eosin-B dye nanoparticles were studied using the ‎scanning-fluorescence spectrophotometer and fluorometer method. The nano water droplet in the ‎oil medium is prepared by a combination of hexane and surfactant water, which is painted inside ‎the drop by Eosin-B. The droplet size was studied on a nonlinear refractive index using a 532 nm ‎laser with a scanning power of 80 mW. The results show that the surface effects on the nano-‎droplets cause the droplets to have a larger nonlinear refractive index. This change was due to a ‎decrease in the accumulation of dyes inside the droplet as well as a decrease in the polarity of the ‎drop solvent relative to the water solvent.

Abstract

This paper presented a systematic approach toward localized failure inspection of internally pressurized laminated ellipsoidal woven composite domes. The domes were made of thin glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) woven composite layups [0,0,0], [0,30,0], [0,45,0], and [0,75,0]. The analytical results demonstrated that the circumferential regions near meridian φ = 45° in prolate ellipsoidal domes and near meridian φ = 90° in oblate ellipsoidal domes sustain the highest deformation under internal pressure. This observation was then confirmed by the numerical and experimental results. In addition, the numerical and experimental results showed localized rather than uniform failure in those regions, irrespective of changes in laminate stacking sequence. It was observed that localized failure occurs since the woven fibers configuration in some areas of woven remains in initial geometry (square shape), while the rests are deformed into the rhombic shape. In other words, by moving along the circumferential direction from the area close to θ = 0° to θ = 45° and θ = 45° to θ = 90°, the shape of woven fibers gradually changes from square (strong area) to rhombic (weak area), and rhombic to square, respectively. Thus, to minimize failure pressure, the meridian region vulnerable to failure must initially be identified. Afterwards, the rhombic regions in the circumference corresponding to that meridian must be strengthened.

Abstract

An analytical solution has been developed developed in this research for electro-mechanical flexural response of smart laminated piezoelectric composite rectangular plates encompassing flexible-spring boundary conditions at two opposite edges. Flexible-spring boundary structure is introduced to the system by inclusion of rotational springs of adjustable stiffness which can vary depending on changes in the rotational fixity factor of the springs. To add to the case study complexity, the two other edges are kept free. Three advantages of employing the proposed analytical method include: (1) the electro-mechanical flexural coupling between the piezoelectric actuators and the plate’s rotational springs of adjustable stiffness is addressed; (2) there is no need for trial deformation and characteristic function—therefore, it has higher accuracy than conventional semi-inverse methods; (3) there is no restriction imposed to the position, type, and number of applied loads. The Linear Theory of Piezoelectricity and Classical Plate Theory are adopted to derive the exact elasticity equation. The higher-order Fourier integral and higher-order unit step function differential equations are combined to derive the analytical equations. The analytical results are validated against those obtained from Abaqus Finite Element (FE) package. The results comparison showed good agreement. The proposed smart plates can potentially be applied to real-life structural systems such as smart floors and bridges and the proposed analytical solution can be used to analyze the flexural deformation response.

Abstract

Summary Background. Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a common and treatment challenging disorder which may involve about 2% of normal population and in 50% do not respond properly even to the second line therapies. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a synbiotic (prebiotic + probiotic) named as LactoCare in treatment of CSU in the RCT for the first time. Methods. This blinded RCT conducted on 42 patients (21 patients in control antihistamine group and 21 in intervention antihistamine + probiotic group) with CSU during 8 weeks. The efficacy assessed by Urticaria Activity Score (UAS7) and quality of life measured by Persian validated Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Results. Before and after UAS7 score in control group was 35.33 ± 7.81 and 16.86 ± 13.54, respectively. There was 53% score reduction in control group. Before and after UAS7 score in intervention group was 32 ± 7.84 and 11 ± 11.41, respectively. There was 66% score reduction in intervention group. Improvement of DLQI in control and intervention group was 44% and 66%, respectively. At the end, UAS7 score reduction and DLQI improvement in both groups was statistically significant. Conclusions. Probiotics are effective, safe and satisfactory adjuvant therapy for CSU. Combination of probiotic and antihistamines had no statistically significant different efficacy than the antihistamine alone, based on UAS7 score. But Patients with combination therapy may experience higher reduction rate of itch, number of urticaria and total UAS7 score that is clinically of great value and is really practical by itself. Patients with combination therapy experienced more improvement of quality of life (DLQI).

Abstract

Designing power amplifiers based on the demanded power and frequency is one of the challenging processes of circuits design in electrical engineering. This is best understood when it comes to thermal noises and other unwanted agents. This is why the application of cloud-based methods can be beneficial to save time and money for designing such complex systems. In this paper, several machine learning (ML) approaches have been used to design a class E amplifier. In this regard, the proposed methods, which are implemented via Microsoft Azure, are used to model and predict the circuit element values of the class E amplifier. In order to reach a reliable design, some important unwanted factors such as nonlinear parasitic elements of the transistor are considered. The results demonstrated that not only can the proposed could-based techniques estimate such elements accurately, but also working with such tools are really easy.

Abstract

Considering economic reasons and attempting to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete structures, there is an increasing tendency toward the use of high strength reinforcement in seismically active regions. ACI 318-19, Iranian steel rebars standard INSO 3132 and next edition of Iranian national building allow the use of high strength rebars in elements of ductile force-resisting systems. Therefore it is important to verify that if S520 rebars are capable of providing adequate, a) strain capacity, b) out of plane buckling deformation capacity, which are the two common sources of failures observed in recent earthquakes in boundary elements of lightly reinforced shear walls. An experimental program is designed to compare strain capacity of boundary elements reinforced with S400 and S520 rebars, which include monotonic and cyclic loading considering probable loading on lightly reinforced boundary elements. Considering test results for specimens under monotonic and cyclic loading it is shown that, a) gauge length suggested by INSO for rebar test could be misleading in the evaluation of rebar axial strain capacity, b) S520 rebars have limited ductility compared to S400, but considering strain demand, this limited strain capacity is adequate to avoid rebar fracture, c) local strain (crack width) has a better correlation with out of plane buckling compared to average strain as suggested by some researchers, d) it seems that out of plane buckling for S520 rebars occurs at smaller deformation, which means there is the need for larger minimum dimension for sections reinforced with S520 compared to S400.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: The results of recent studies suggest that model-based health education programs are more effective in changing health behaviors. Interventional programs based on health education theories can be used to explain individual and psychological behavioral determinants in order to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS. This study was conducted with the aim of psychometric analysis of an HIV scale based on model, population and culture of Iran. Methods: We used qualitative and quantitative methods during August 2015 to December 2017. The items were generated based on a literature review and interviews with an expert panel. After providing a primary list of the instrument items, we used content and face validity. The first step of the study was done in a sample of medical and non-medical college and high school student from Zanjan. The exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability of the scale were measured. Results: Fifty-eight items were generated from interviews with experts and review of the literature. After measuring the face and content validity, the items decreased to 53 items. The exploratory factor analysis discovered five factors (perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy), including 30 items for high school students and 31 for university students, that predictive more than 58% of the observed variance. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the sub-scales ranged from 0.80 to 0.86, and the ICC was above 0.86. Conclusion: The results showed that the HBM was a valid and reliable tool for measuring the HIV/AIDS beliefs and could be used in future investigations.

Abstract

Experimental and numerical studies on a hybrid composite smart beam under quasi-static loading were carried out. The composite beam is consisted of two layers; carbon fibre/epoxy and SMA wire/epoxy layer. Carbon fibres as well as SMA wires were embedded in the host epoxy unidirectionally. SMA wires were programmed before being embedded in the composite beam. All thermo-mechanical properties associated with SMA wires were experimentally determined. A constant flexural load was initially applied to the middle of a simply-supported beam and temperature of the beam was then increased. The beam was heated using a thermal-chamber . During the heating process the deflection of the beam at midpoint was measured and the behaviour of the hybrid beam under incremental load was investigated. It was observed that, the presence of embedded SMA wires in the beam can effectively reduce deflection. Furthermore, using high volume fraction of fibres can cause buckling in the opposite direction of lateral force. Experimental results were compared against FE method and a perfect fit was obtained.

Abstract

Dome curvatures of pressure vessels often sustain highest level of stresses when subjected to various loading conditions. This research is aimed at investigating the effect of dome geometrical shape (hemispherical, torispherical, and ellipsoidal domes) on mechanical deformation and crack length of laminated woven reinforced polymer (GRP) composite pressure vessels under low-velocity impact (LVI) (case one) or combination of LVI and internal pressure (case two). The study is based on finite element (FE) simulations with laboratory-based experimental validation studies. It was observed that the maximum vertical displacements (U*1) and crack length along the diameter of deformation (a) are both of lower magnitude in case one. Damage intensity and fracture differ for different combinations of loading. Only matrix breakage and debonding occurs in case one and fiber breakage occurs in case two. The dome geometric shapes used in this study were found to be invariant to both damage intensity and failure modes. Irrespective of the type of load applied, the magnitude of U*1 and crack length correlate with dome geometric shape as the maximum and the minimum U*1 occur in torispherical and hemispherical domes, respectively. The maximum and the minimum crack lengths also take place in torispherical and hemispherical domes, respectively.

Abstract

For the first time, the formation of nano-porous (NP) gallium nitride (GaN) on p-type silicon (Si) (100) substrate with the plasma focus device was observed. Four and six main plasma focus shots with GaN as the target on the Si substrate were applied. Subsequently, two shots of nitrogen plasma without the GaN target were applied to both of the Si surfaces. Then the substrates were gone through a 1050°C nitrogen treatment by a thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) device. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy indicated NP structures on the surface of the substrates. With the increase in the amount of shots, thicker and rougher NP structures were formed. Additionally, X-ray diffraction shows GaN polycrystalline formation on the surface with the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, indicating that there was nitrogen deficiency on the Si substrates.

Abstract

A Mather type plasma focus device (PFD) was used to grow semiconductor material gallium nitride nanoparticles on P-type silicon (100) with nitrogen as working gas. Two, four and six amount of plasma focus shots were applied to 3 Silicon substrates, field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy indicated spherical gallium nitride nanoparticles nearly similar to gallium nitride quantum dots on the substrate that was deposited with two shots. Photoluminescence spectrometry shows emission peaks in violet 420 nm (2.95 eV) wavelength in all three samples, additionally as the shots increased small peaks at near ultraviolet 360 nm (3.44 eV) were observed. UV–Vis–NIR shows most reflectance at near ultraviolet for the second sample with four shots, as X-ray diffraction shows only some peaks for the third sample with six shots which indicates the low quality of gallium nitride crystalline formation.

Abstract

In the present work, a novel explicit analytical solution is proposed for obtaining twisting deformation and optimal shape control of smart laminated cantilever composite plates/beams using inclined piezoelectric actuators. The linear piezoelectricity and plate theories are adapted for the analysis. A novel double integral multivariable Fourier transformation method and discretised higher order partial differential unit step function equations are employed. For the first time, an exact solution is developed to analyse electro-mechanical twisting moments in smart composite structures. Since there are no published benchmark results for verification, a series of simple, accurate and robust finite element (FE) analysis models and realistic electro-mechanical coupled FE procedures are developed for the effective prediction of the structural behaviour of the smart laminated piezo-composite structures under arbitrary loads. In addition to the novelty of the explicit solution, more comprehensive FE simulations of smart structures and step-by-step guidelines are discussed. The effect of various parameters including electro-mechanical twisting coupling, layup thickness, actuators size, placement, and inclination angle, electrical voltage, stacking sequence, and geometrical dimension are taken into account. The comparison of results shows an excellent agreement. Unlike the earlier studies, the proposed method does not require the characteristic and trial deflection function to be predetermined.

Abstract

Absorption cooling systems have been investigated for many years due to their ability to use low-grade heat instead of electricity as the energy source. The aim of this work is to advance the performance of a single-effect Lithium bromide/water absorption cooling system. Taking the generator and evaporator temperatures as variables, the system is optimized to maximize exergetic and energetic efficiencies at different operational conditions using a multi-objective–multi-variable Genetic Algorithm. The Group Method of Data Handling neural network approach is adopted to derive correlations between the design variables and operational parameters. Finally, the system is coupled to evacuated tube solar collectors and compared to a similar system. The results reflect a maximum improvement in energetic and exergetic efficiencies of about 9.1% and 3.0%, respectively. This translates into savings of 187 dollars for every square meter of solar collector at present time. This improvement is achieved by decreasing the mean temperature of the generator by 6.2 °C and increasing the mean temperature of the evaporator by 1.6 °C. In the case of applying low-grade heat such as solar energy, it brings about both an improvement in the thermodynamic performances and a reduction in the generator temperature.

Abstract

In this study, strain deformation of three types of internally pressurized laminated composite shells (hemispherical, ellipsoidal, and torispherical) with two types of woven roving (WR) stacking sequence (WR [0]6 and WR [0/45]3) was studied numerically and experimentally. The regions at which the critical strain occurs were determined by using finite element analysis (FEA). Careful experimental study was carried out for results validation. Vacuum infusion process (VIP) was employed for the composite shell fabrication. The surface-bounded sensors were used to measure strain values occurring at the outermost ply. In general, a good agreement between strain variation rates derived by the two approaches was observed. However, some discrepancy was observed for strain magnitude, particularly the ones close to the boundary. The possible reasons behind this were then discussed. Furthermore, the effect of staking sequence and geometrical shape on the mechanical strength of laminated woven composite shells was investigated and critical mechanical factors were accounted for. Laminated composite shells with WR [0/45]3 were found to be the preferred choice over WR [0]6. Laminated hemispherical shells were also found to be the preferred choice against mechanical failure while laminated tosipherical shells were found to be the least choice.

Abstract

In this paper, a new explicit exact analytical solution is proposed for obtaining static deformation and optimal shape control of smart laminated cantilever piezo composite hybrid plates and beams under thermo-electro-mechanical loads using piezoelectric actuators. The linear piezoelectricity and plates theories were adapted for the analysis. A novel double integral multivariable Fourier transformation method combined with discretised higher order partial differential unit step function equations were employed. The effect of various parameters including arbitrary loads such as non-uniform thermal stresses, electrical and mechanical loads, layup thickness, piezoelectric actuators size and placement, stacking sequence, and geometrical dimension were considered. The results were then compared with some published benchmark results and good agreement was observed. Unlike the earlier studies, the proposed method does not require the characteristic and trial deflection function to be predetermined. Both, the embedded and bounded actuators are considered. Until now, the shape control task of reducing mid-plane deformation at free end in smart laminated cantilever plates and beams was unsolvable and approximations were typically employed in numerical analysis Yu et al. (2009). This problem becomes more complicated for wider and longer plates but the method proposed herein successfully resolves this issue.
