Study type: Prevalence study. Objective: To describe the socio demographic and clinical profile of patients with mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance (PAS) use, evaluated by the Psychiatric team of the Referenced Emergency Unit (REU) at the State University Clinical Hospital of Campinas (UNICAMP-HC). Methods and casuistic: This is a descriptive and quantitative study, which analyzed patients with mental and behavioral disorders due to PAS use, evaluated by the Psychiatric team of the REU-HC-UNICAMP during a period of 12 months, starting on May 2010. Results: There were evaluated 350 patients with PAS related disorders, representing 23.8% of those who sought psychiatric care. Most were males and younger than other patients of the emergency unit. The main reason for seeking help was psychiatric complaint other than PAS related disorders (23.1%), followed by desire to be treated oneself/being admitted to inpatient psychiatric treatment (20.8%) and intoxication (12.5%); 38.5% had a diagnosis of multiple PAS dependence and 34.8% were diagnosed with isolated alcohol dependence; 36% had psychiatric comorbidities and, when compared to other patients, they received more medications during attendance and were less directed to primary care units. Conclusion: There is a high rate of consultations of patients with PAS related problems in the psychiatric emergency unit. Data on the profile of the evaluated these patients can contribute to the improvement of care to this population

BACKGROUND Increased incidence of cancer in women of childbearing age and improvements on treatment for preserving fertility have led to higher frequency of pregnancy during or after cancer treatment. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to describe maternal and perinatal outcomes associated with cancer and pregnancy and, as a secondary analysis, to compare outcomes of women with active disease and with remission before pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN We performed a retrospective study of women followed up at a referral center owing to a history of cancer or cancer diagnosed during pregnancy. Data on sociodemographic information, obstetrical history, types of neoplasia, treatments offered, antenatal follow-up, and maternal and perinatal outcomes were retrieved from medical chart review. A descriptive analysis was performed and a comparison among women with active and nonactive disease was performed using Student t-test and chi-square test. RESULTS A total of 66 women were included in a 5-year period. The most frequent types of cancer were breast (33%), hematologic (21%), brain (11%), cervical (9%), and ovarian (5%) cancers. There were 39 participants (59%) who had active disease and 26 who received oncological treatment during pregnancy, and 23 (34.8%) had a vaginal delivery. There were 4 women who needed intensive care unit admission postpartum. A total of 18 (29.5%) deliveries were at term, most newborns (59%) with adequate weight for gestational age and only 1 had Apgar score lower than 7 in the fifth minute of life. Women and motherhood are important aspects of the immigration issue. Different behaviour related to reproduction and maternity among foreign women, when compared with that of Italian women, is a key factor that has led to a slowing down of the population decline in Italy. Difficulties connected to migration often have impacts on motherhood, in some cases posing problems and conflicts with being a mother. This can result in frequent recourse to abortion, difficulty in managing sexuality and reproductive capacity, and the decision to postpone the realization of children indefinitely – situations that may provoke deep lacerations in the fabric of women's identity. One of the main problems for immigrant women in relation to pregnancy, childbirth and childcare is a profound sense of isolation: having been uprooted from their families, friends, and their own cultural references and traditions related to motherhood, and in some cases giving birth in aseptic hospitals with doctors and nurses who do not even speak...

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of psychiatric conditions in clinical settings is high, particularly in emergency services. This is a challenge for healthcare professionals and an essential element in the functioning of the mental health network. The objective here was to describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile and the practices among patients treated psychiatrically in the Emergency Unit. DESIGN AND SETTING: Descriptive and quantitative study, conducted at Hospital das Clínicas (HC), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). METHODS: Sociodemographic data, reasons for attendance, diagnostic hypotheses and practices were analyzed. RESULTS: Psychiatric staff attended 1,835 cases over the study period, corresponding to 1465 patients. The patients were predominantly women (53.7%) and white (79.6%); their mean age was 37 years and 41.3% lived with their parents. The commonest reasons for attendance were depressive symptoms (28.1%), agitation (23.6%) and problems with psychoactive substances (19.5%). The commonest diagnoses were psychoactive substance-related disorders (23%) and depressive disorders (18.5%). 31.6% of the patients were referred to healthcare centers and 29.2% to specialized outpatient clinics, while 8.2% were hospitalized. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes that it is important for professionals working in emergency service to have information about the patients' profile and the main reasons that lead them to seek psychiatric care, and to establish a diagnosis that will allow proper management at the emergency service and case referral. CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: A prevalência de quadros psiquiátricos em contextos clínicos é elevada, particularmente em serviços de emergência, representando um desafio para os profissionais da saúde e um elemento essencial no funcionamento da rede de saúde mental. Objetivou-se descrever o perfil sócio-demográfico, clínico e condutas para pacientes atendidos pela psiquiatria na Unidade de Emergência. TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Estudo descritivo e quantitativo, conduzido no Hospital das Clínicas (HC), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). MÉTODOS: Foram analisados dados sócio-demográficos, motivos de atendimento, hipóteses diagnósticas e condutas. RESULTADOS: Houve 1.835 atendimentos pela Psiquiatria no período, correspondendo a 1.465 pacientes. Encontrou-se predomínio de mulheres (53,7%), idade média de 37 anos, maioria branca (79,6%); 41,3% moravam com os pais. Os motivos mais frequentes de atendimento foram sintomas depressivos (28,1%), agitação (23,6%) e problemas com substâncias psicoativas (SPA) (19,5%). Os diagnósticos mais frequentes foram transtornos relacionados a SPA (23%) e transtornos depressivos (18,5%). 31,6% dos pacientes foram encaminhados para centros de saúde, 29,2% para ambulatórios especializados e 8,2% foram internados. CONCLUSÃO: O estudo reforça a importância de que profissionais que atuem em serviços de emergência tenham informações sobre o perfil, os principais motivos que levam os pacientes a procurar atendimento psiquiátrico, além do estabelecimento de uma hipótese diagnóstica que permita uma adequada conduta no serviço e o seu encaminhamento.

Il saggio esamina il fenomeno della violenza contro le donne nella storia, assumendo come punto di anali privilegiato maltrattamenti e omicidi di prossimità rivolti in particolare contro la madre. Il contesto prescelto è quello della Roma di fine Cinquecento, teatro di alcuni celebri parricidi, tra cui uno in particolare è un matricidio. A partire dal caso celebre, si esamina la diffusione della violenza interpersonale, soprattutto rivolta contro i familiari, l'incidenza dei parricidi nel quadro delle violenze cagione di pena capitale nello Stato pontificio e in altre realtà statuali dell'epoca, i motivi che vengono richiamati a giustificazione dell'atto letale. Inoltre, il caso di studio vede tra i protagonisti, in veste professionale, il giurista Prospero Farinacci, il quale nelle sue opere dottrinali e pratiche dedica spazio al reato di parricidio e soprattutto con la sua conoscenza diretta dei fatti in esame consente di intrecciare le sue osservazioni peculiari con quanto emerge dalla documentazione processuale e cronachistica.

In the modern digital society colors are often used to encode information. Nevertheless the selection of set of colors that maximizes class discriminability for nominal coding is a non-trivial problem. In this work we compare four different heuristics for the selection of sets of colors with fixed cardinality and maximum dissimilarity. The performance of each algorithm is evaluated both on single and multiple illuminants, on a sample of 1268 colors from the Munsell atlas, using ΔE 76 euclidean metrics on the perceptually uniform CIE L* a* b* space. Results are presented for color sets with cardinality up to 25. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Vector graphics is increasingly gaining importance within the Word Wide Web community, because it allows users to create images that are easily manageable, modifiable and understandable. Two formats play a leading role among the languages for vector graphics: SVG and VML. Achieving a complete interoperability between these two languages means providing users a complete support for vector images across implementations, operating systems and media. In this paper we describe VectorConverter, a tool that allows easy, automatic and reasonably good conversion between two vector graphic formats, SVG and VML, and one raster format, GIF. This tool makes good translations between languages with very different functionalities and expressivity, by applying translation rules, approximation and heuristics. A high-level discussion about implementation details, open issues and future developments of VectorConverter is provided as well.
