Abstract

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34 GHz to 448 GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89–224 GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166–448 GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5 K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100 mK. We provide an overview of the concept design and the remaining specific challenges that we have to face in order to achieve the scientific goals of LiteBIRD.

Abstract

COSMO is a ground-based instrument to measure the spectral distortions (SD) of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In this paper, we present preliminary results of electromagnetic simulations of its reference blackbody calibrator. HFSS simulations provide a calibrator reflection coefficient of $$R\sim 10^{-6}$$ R ∼ 10 - 6 , corresponding to an emissivity $$\epsilon =1-R=0.999999$$ ϵ = 1 - R = 0.999999 . We also provide a forecast for the instrument performance by using an ILC-based simulation. We show that COSMO can extract the isotropic Comptonization parameter (modeled as $$|y|=1.77 \cdot 10^{-6}$$ | y | = 1.77 · 10 - 6 ) as $$|y|=(1.79\pm 0.19)\cdot 10^{-6}$$ | y | = ( 1.79 ± 0.19 ) · 10 - 6 , in the presence of the main Galactic foreground (thermal dust) and of CMB anisotropies, and assuming perfect atmospheric emission removal.

Abstract

et al., Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature., This work is supported by NASA under grant no. 80NSSC18K0132.

Abstract

The Tenerife Microwave Spectrometer (TMS) is a new 10-20 GHz experiment that will be installed at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Spain), next to the QUIJOTE CMB experiment. The main TMS scientific driver is to accurately measure absolute distortions of the sky spectrum in the 10-20 GHz frequency range, with special emphasis on the characterization of the absolute synchrotron monopole from our Galaxy, and the possible deviations of the CMB spectrum from a pure blackbody law. TMS will provide an absolute calibration for the QUIJOTE experiment, and it will also serve as a prototype for future instruments of its type, both ground-based and satellites. Among its new instrumental design is an octave bandwidth high quality cryogenic front-end, a thermally stabilized cold black body and a new design of wide-band Fourier transform spectrometer. The spectrometer will have a resolution of 250 MHz, giving 40 spectrally stable sub-bands.

Abstract

LiteBIRD is a JAXA strategic L-class mission devoted to the measurement of polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, searching for the signature of primordial gravitational waves in the B-modes pattern of the polarization. The onboard instrumentation includes a Middle and High Frequency Telescope (MHFT), based on a pair of cryogenically cooled refractive telescopes covering, respectively, the 89-224 GHz and the 166-448 GHz bands. Given the high target sensitivity and the careful systematics control needed to achieve the scientific goals of the mission, optical modeling and characterization are performed with the aim to capture most of the physical effects potentially affecting the real performance of the two refractors. We describe the main features of the MHFT, its design drivers and the major challenges in system optimization and characterization. Abstract

H. Sugai, et al., Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. Abstract

LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. Abstract

La trasformazione tecnologica e digitale delle imprese può costituire un’opportunità e un nuovo paradigma per promuovere la transizione energetica del settore industriale? A questa domanda vuole dare risposta la nuova monografia della collana RSEview, disponibile in versione digitale sul sito RSE. Il volume analizza l’opportunità del mondo industriale di cogliere la domanda di “transizione”, determinata dagli obiettivi di decarbonizzazione e dai programmi del Green New Deal, verso modelli di sviluppo in grado di disaccoppiare la crescita economica e l’impatto sull’ambiente, sull’utilizzo delle risorse e sul territorio. Tale transizione comporterà profonde modifiche strutturali dei modelli d'impresa, delle competenze richieste, dell’utilizzo delle risorse, le cui ripercussioni sul mondo produttivo varieranno in funzione della capacità di saper accompagnare tale trasformazione con opportune politiche industriali e misure di supporto, come l’attuale Piano Transizione 4.0: uno strumento efficace, secondo RSE, per accompagnare il settore industriale nell’ambiziosa sfida della decarbonizzazione.

Abstract

We present the electromagnetic model of a dual circular polarization antenna-feed system, consisting of a corrugated feedhorn, a polarizer and an orthomode transducer. This model was developed for the passive front-end implemented in the Q-band receivers of the STRIP instrument of the Large Scale Polarization Explorer experiment. Its applicability, however, is completely general. The model has been implemented by superposing the response of two linearly polarized feedhorns with a $\pi$/2 phase difference, thus taking into account for the effect of the polarizer, that behaves differently for the two polarizations of the incoming electric field. The model has been verified by means of radiation pattern measurements performed in the anechoic chamber at the Physics Department of the University of Milan. We measured both arms of the orthomode transducer, in order to check that the diagram at one port is the 90_ rotation of the diagram at the other port. Simulations and measurements show an agreement at the level of fraction of a dB up to the first sidelobes, thus confirming the model., Comment: 12 pages

Abstract

We present a preliminary study of the sky scanning strategy for the LSPE-STRIP instrument, a ground-based telescope that will be installed at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Canary Islands) in early 2019 and will observe the polarized emission of about 25% of the sky in the Northern Hemisphere at 43 and 95 GHz. The same sky portion will be observed at 140, 220 and 240 GHz by LSPE-SWIPE, a stratospheric balloon scheduled for a long-duration flight around the North Pole during the Arctic winter of 2019/2020. The combination of data from the two instruments aims at constraining the tensor-to-scalar ratio down to r ~ 0.03. In our paper we discuss the main scanning strategy requirements (overlap with SWIPE coverage, sensitivity distribution, observation of calibration sources) and show how we obtain a trade-off by spinning the telescope around the azimuth axis with constant elevation and angular velocity. The combination of the telescope motion with the Earth rotation will guarantee the access to the large angular scales. We will observe periodically the Crab Nebula as well as the Perseus molecular cloud. The Crab is one of the best known polarized sources in the sky and it will be observed for calibration purposes. The second one is a source of Anomalous Microwave Emission that could be characterized both in intensity and polarization.

Abstract

LiteBIRD is a candidate for JAXA’s strategic large mission to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. It is planned to be launched in the 2020s with an H3 launch vehicle for three years of observations at a Sun-Earth Lagrangian point (L2). The concept design has been studied by researchers from Japan, U.S., Canada and Europe during the ISAS Phase-A1. Large scale measurements of the CMB B-mode polarization are known as the best probe to detect primordial gravitational waves. The goal of LiteBIRD is to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) with precision of δr < 0.001. A 3-year full sky survey will be carried out with a low frequency (34 - 161 GHz) telescope (LFT) and a high frequency (89 - 448 GHz) telescope (HFT), which achieve a sensitivity of 2.5 µK-arcmin with an angular resolution of ∼ 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. Abstract

The coexistence or the development of Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms after a lymphoproliferative disease in the same patient is an extremely rare event. We report the case of a 72-year-old man who developed JAK2V617F polycythemia vera 3 years after the diagnosis and treatment of primary diffuse large B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the central nervous system. We also review the literature regarding the pathogenesis underlying the association of myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative chronic disorders.

Abstract

We report the case of a severe relapsing phenprocoumon-induced hepatitis. The first episode of hepatitis was thought to be caused by another drug (Verapamil). The anticoagulation with Phenprocoumon was therefore continued after healing of liver inflammation. The relapse typically developed after a shorter exposition-time supporting the hypothesis of an allergic etiology. Fortunately we didn't find any cross-reaction between Phenprocoumon and Acenocoumarol. The patient could thus be anticoagulated orally without complications. If long term anticoagulation is absolutely essential, it is reasonable to prescribe a different Coumarin-derivate. In the case of a cross-reaction, the therapy should be continued with low-molecular weight heparin.

Abstract

The search for cholesterol crystals in the bile, drawn during the endoscopy, represents a simple and reliable method in the diagnosis of the symptomatic biliary sludge. In our patients it was present in 82% of the cases. The injection of cholecystokinin appears to us absolutely necessary in order to obtain vesicular bile. The sensitiveness of abdominal sonography in the diagnosis of biliary sludge is weak, 13% of our cases. The clinical evolution with ursodeoxycholic acid treatment has been favourable in 83% of the treated patients.

Abstract

We describe the case of a patient suffering from relapsing abdominal pain and vomiting over 4 years, in whom various radiological and endoscopic examinations remained normal. CT scan and MRI eventually showed a mesenteric mass corresponding to metastasis of an ileal carcinoid; this tumor was diagnosed only at laparotomy as well as his mesenteric and hepatic metastases. The different localization and clinical manifestations of carcinoid tumours as well as the difficulties of radiological diagnosis of tumours of the small bowel are mentioned; the diagnostic value of sonography. CT-scan and MRI in the diagnosis of hepatic metastasis is discussed.

Abstract

Lymphocytic gastritis is characterised by an accumulation of lymphocytes in the epithelium of the gastric mucosa. This form accounts for 4.5% of chronic B-gastritis and manifests itself by dyspepsia, anorexia and weight loss. The course is benign, as 12 of 19 patients recovered within 24 to 36 months in Haot's studies. Macroscopically it appears with nodules, erosions, thickened mucosal folds, or diffuse varioliform pattern. The gastric corpus is preferentially involved. The etiology is unknown. Some authors have hypothesized an abnormal immune response to a local antigen, i.e. Campylobacter pylori.

Abstract

A double-blind controlled clinical trial on the medical treatment of the acute episode of duodenal ulcer and the prevention of symptomatic relapses was performed. A total of 164 patients with active duodenal ulcer were either treated with cimetidine 1 g/day (70 patients), diethylaminepersilate (DAP) 1.5 g/day (64 patients) or DAP 2.5 g/day (30 patients). DAP is an allegedly protective agent stimulating mucosal prostaglandin synthesis. Cumulative healing rates after 4 weeks in the 3 groups were 66, 28 and 28% and after 8 weeks 94, 70 and 63%, respectively. One hundred and five patients with healed duodenal ulcer received, in a second double-blind study, either DAP 0.5 g/day or placebo. Thus, ulcer healing was more rapid with cimetidine than with DAP. DAP did not prevent relapses. No presenting characteristic was associated with slow healing. Three presenting characteristics--smoking, teetotalling and bleeding episode in the past--were associated with early symptomatic relapse. The present study was compared with a previous study performed by the same group of investigators using a similar study protocol. In both trials, an early relapse was associated with smoking. No other presenting characteristic was identified which in both trials was associated with slow healing or early symptomatic relapse. Thus, smoking appears to be the only one of the commonly available presenting characteristics which allows a prediction of the course of duodenal ulcer disease.

Abstract

In 108 patients the healing and relapse of re flux esophagitis, defined endoscopically by the presence of epithelial defects (erosions and ulcerations) of the esophageal mucosa, were studied. In the first study, with open treatment of ranitidine, the healing rate after 6 wk was 50%. The most important factor that negatively influenced healing was the extent of esophageal erosions. Patients with isolated erosions had a 6-wk healing rate of 78%; the healing rate was 38% in patients with longitudinally confluent lesions and 23% in those with circumferential erosions of the distal esophagus. Smoking also had an unfavorable effect. Age, sex, duration of history, body weight, and alcohol consumption were not related to outcome. Symptoms improved during treatment with ranitidine, but the correlation between symptoms and endoscopic findings at 6 wk was weak. In the second study, relapse was investigated in 61 patients with healed esophagitis in a randomized, double-blind trial comparing placebo and ranitidine (150 mg at bedtime for 6 mo). In both groups, relapse occurred in more than one-third of the patients, with no significant difference between ranitidine and placebo treatment. Patients with worse daytime symptoms at the time of previous healing had a higher relapse rate. The initial severity of esophagitis and smoking did not influence recurrence. Thus, the initial endoscopic findings are of prognostic value in re flux esophagitis. Smoking retards healing. Low-dose maintenance treatment with ranitidine does not prevent relapse.

Abstract

Thirty-eight patients with erosive-ulcerative reflux esophagitis were treated in an open trial with the histamine-H2-receptor antagonist ranitidine (150 mg twice daily). At endoscopy after 6 weeks there was evidence of complete healing of all epithelial defects in 20 of 38 patients (53%). Continuation of treatment for another 6 weeks in 13 patients was followed by healing in 6 additional patients as judged by endoscopy. Although the symptoms of the group as a whole improved significantly during treatment, there was no correlation between the degree of symptomatic improvement and healing of esophagitis. Also, the healing rate did not depend on age, sex, smoking and drinking habits or on the severity of esophagitis. It is concluded that medical treatment of reflux esophagitis with ranitidine is promising, even in severe cases previously considered candidates for surgery.

Abstract

The relationship between different endoscopic (gross appearance, diameter, localization, morphological type according to the Japanese Endoscopic Society) and histological parameters (type of cancer according to Lauren, tumor infiltration, association with metaplastic chronic gastritis) were analyzed retrospectively in 48 patients operated on for early gastric cancer. Endoscopy and histology provided a preoperative diagnosis of malignancy in 89.6% of the cases. With endoscopy alone the results were 23% malignancy, 44% suspicious and 33 benign. The antrum was the preferential site and type III the most frequent form. 62% of early gastric cancers were of the intestinal type and the average age of the patients was higher than for the diffuse type. Metaplastic chronic gastritis was associated in 67% of the intestinal type and in 21.5% of the infiltrating type. The degree of tumor infiltration was related to the diameter of the lesion, irrespective of the histological type. Since a malignant or suspicious lesion was diagnosed in only 67% by endoscopy alone, it is imperative to perform several biopsies of all gastric lesions, including even the smallest: 11 cancers of type III and IIc in this series had a diameter inferior to 1 cm and had been classified endoscopically as benign.

Abstract

37 patients with endoscopically confirmed gastric ulcers received either cimetidine (19 patients) or pirenzepine (18 patients) in a double-blind trial. At 4 weeks, 53% of the patients treated with cimetidine and 44% of those treated with pirenzepine had endoscopically healed ulcers. At 8 weeks, complete healing had occurred in 83% of the patients taking cimetidine and 71% of those taking pirenzepine. These differences are not statistically significant.

Postoperative reflux gastritis is generally considered a definite clinical syndrome. It is the possible sequel to any gastric surgery suppressing pyloric continence. Incidence of this complication is still difficult to evaluate, whereas enterogastric reflux is often seen during endoscopy. 75 patients were studied clinically and endoscopically, and their gastric mucosa histologically, after gastric surgery. Results were compared to those in a 2nd group of patients whose reflux induced symptoms had been brought under control by endoscopically confirmed surgical correction of reflux. Enterogastric reflux is common (80%), but its effect on the gastric mucosa is observed endoscopically only when it is relatively marked (69%). Clinical suspicion of reflux gastritis is most often confirmed by endoscopy, but endoscopic reflux gastritis is symptomatic in only half of patients undergoing surgery. Foveolar hyperplasia is the only histological criterion related to reflux gastritis.

The effect of ursodesoxycholic acid (UDCA) on dyspeptic symptoms and pain in cholelithiasis and biliary dyskinesia has been investigated in a double blind trial. The results obtained in 661 patients investigated after 7 and 14 days of treatment show a significantly superior effect of UDCA compared with placebo.

Abstract

Study of 100 cases of duodenal ulcer has revealed disagreement between radiologic and endoscopic findings. In 20 percent of cases the disagreement was minor (e.g. deformed duodenum - ulcer, deformed duodenum - scar, etc.). In 5 percent of cases they were major (e.g. normal - ulcer). The percentage of discrepancies, which were to the advantage of endoscopy, was lower than in the reports of JENNI and KAWAI, probably because our heterogeneous radiologic material was reviewed beforehand by two radiologists. The specific merit of endoscopy is that it makes it possible to observe superficial and sub-radiologic lesions of the mucosa, localize the ulcer with greater precision and detect deformation of the pylorus. Radiology affords better evidence of certain deformations.

Abstract

Fifty-five patients with endoscopically confirmed gastric ulcers received either cimetidine (28 patients) or pirenzepine (27 patients) in a randomized double-blind manner. Fifty-seven per cent of the patients treated with cimetidine and 48% of those treated with pirenzepine presented with endoscopically healed ulcers after 4 weeks of treatment. By 8 weeks complete healing had occurred in 83% of the patients taking cimetidine and 76% of those taking pirenzepine. These differences were not statistically significant. Severity of pain on entering the study was correlated with slower healing of the ulcer. Side effects occurred in 5 of 27 patients in the pirenzepine group and 3 of 28 in the cimetidine group. They were mostly mild and did not differ from side effects observed in other studies.

Abstract

So-called acalculous gallbladder disease is an ill-defined entity, mainly seen in young women, which could be due to a motility disorder of the biliary tract. Seven young women with relapsing pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen or in the epigastrium, with cholesterol crystals in the bile and with normal sonographic and radiologic findings as well as normal gastroscopy, were investigated by hepato-biliary scintigraphy with 99mTc-HIDA. This first group was compared with a second group of 6 young women suffering from irritable colon, and with a third group of 6 asymptomatic control subjects. The half emptying-time of the gallbladder after cholecystokinin injection was 104.36 +/- 43.93 minutes in the first group, 17.92 +/- 23.57 minutes in the second and 20.42 +/- 23.67 minutes in the third group (p less than 0.005). After 6 weeks of ursodeoxycholic acid treatment, regression of pain and a significant reduction in the half emptying-time from 104.36 +/- 43.93 to 74.35 +/- 52.79 minutes (p less than 0.01) was observed in the first group. These results, which need to be confirmed by further studies, show that in acalculous gallbladder disease there is a delay in gallbladder emptying which could explain the formation of cholesterol crystals by bile stasis as described by various authors.

Abstract

We analyzed appearance of non transferrin bound iron (NTBI) in 30 transplant eligible patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during conventional chemotherapy treatment program and evaluated possible relationship with transfusional body iron intake, iron parameters and clinical complications. For each course, serum samples for NTBI detection were taken prior to chemotherapy, during treatment and during subsequent bone marrow myelosuppression: NTBI was assessed by HPLC. Appearance of NTBI was observed from the start of induction treatment and was still detectable during bone marrow myelosuppression; the recovery of the bone marrow function coincided with the disappearance of NTBI. This kinetic was observed in all subsequent high doses chemotherapy courses, independently from confounding variables such as transfusional iron intake and transferrin saturation. NTBI seems to be a consequence of chemotherapy induced lysis of bone marrow cells and, partly, of hepatocytes after cytotoxic injury. The subsequent persistence of NTBI throughout bone marrow myelosuppression is related to the transient suspension of erythropoietic activity. Moreover, NTBI levels >2μM at the beginning of iatrogenic myelosuppression were associated with higher risk of sepsis caused by Gram negative Bacilli (RR 2.571), also compared with other infectious complications (RR 1.954)., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

The coexistence or the development of Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms after a lymphoproliferative disease in the same patient is an extremely rare event. We report the case of a 72-year-old man who developed JAK2V617F polycythemia vera 3 years after the diagnosis and treatment of primary diffuse large B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the central nervous system.
