Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) at an oblique angle to the magnetic field provides a means of probing the electron distribution function both in energy and physical space through changes in and constraints on the relativistic electron cyclotron resonance condition. Diagnostics based on this Doppler shifted resonance are able to study a variety of electron distributions through changes in the location of the resonance in physical or energy space accomplished by changes in the viewing angle and frequency, and the magnetic field. For the case of observation across a changing magnetic field, such as across the tokamak midplane, the constraint on the resonance condition for real solutions to the dispersion relation can constrain the physical location of optically thin emission. It is shown that radial localization of optically thin electron cyclotron emission from superthermal electrons can be imposed by observation of emission upshifted from the thermal cyclotron resonance in the horizontal midplane of a tokamak. A new and unique diagnostic has been proposed and operated to make radially localized measurements of superthermal electrons during lower hybrid current drive on the Princeton Beta Experiment‐Modified (PBX‐M) tokamak [Bernabei, et al., Phys. Fluids B 5, 2562 (1993)]. The superthermal electron density profile as well as moments of the electron energy distribution as a function of radius are measured during lower hybrid current drive. The time evolution of these measurements after the lower hybrid power is turned off are given and the observed behavior reflects the collisional isotropization of the energy distribution and radial diffusion of the spatial profile.

A new post-processor has been developed for use with output from the PEST tokamak stability code. It allows us to use quantities calculated by PEST and take better advantage of the physical picture of the plasma instability which they can provide. This will improve comparison with experimentally measured quantities as well as facilitate understanding of theoretical studies.

The experimental program of the Princeton Beta Experiment‐Modified (PBX‐M) tokamak [Phys. Fluids B2, 1271 (1990)] is directed toward tailoring plasma profiles to achieve greater stability and confinement and to gain access to the second stability region. Modification of the current density profile has been achieved with lower‐hybrid current drive (LHCD), leading to a regime free of global magnetohydrodynamic modes, while raising the value of q(0) above unity. The diffusion of the fast electrons produced by LHCD has been examined using two‐dimensional hard x‐ray imaging. Ion Bernstein waves (IBW) have been used for ion heating: a preliminary analysis shows that ion heating was spatially localized and in agreement with theoretical calculations. Divertor biasing has modified the electric field inside the last closed surface, resulting in the formation of a transport barrier, which in turn has reduced the threshold power of neutral beam injection (NBI) for H‐mode transition by 25%.

To aid in the study of lower hybrid current drive as a means of current profile control, the radial profile and velocity distribution of the fast current‐carrying electrons and their time evolution must be known. As part of the recent effort to understand this fast electron transport, a diagnostic has been installed on PBX‐M to measure the electron cyclotron emission from the fast electrons. An oblique horizontal view of upshifted cyclotron emission in the midplane can give radial as well as velocity space information about the fast electrons. The uranium differential atomic pair distribution function (DDF) of icosahedral ${\mathrm{Pd}}_{58.8}$${\mathrm{U}}_{20.6}$${\mathrm{Si}}_{20.6}$ is shown to compare well with the vertex-vertex distance distribution function of a quasicrystalline lattice up to 40 A\r{}. The DDF is also compatible, but less favorably, with the icosahedral glass model, which we point out has a local structure very similar to an ideal quasicrystalline structure up to 50 A\r{} or more. Based upon the comparison of theoretical and experimental values of physical density as well, we conclude that the icosahedral ${\mathrm{Pd}}_{58.8}$${\mathrm{U}}_{20.6}$${\mathrm{Si}}_{20.6}$ is better described by the quasicrystalline model.
