We introduce a new prescription for the evolution of globular clusters (GCs) during the initial embedded gas phase into a Monte Carlo method. With a simplified version of the Monte Carlo MOCCA code embedded in the AMUSE framework, we study the survival of GCs after the removal of primordial gas. We first test our code and show that our results for the evolution of mass and Lagrangian radii are in good agreement with those obtained with N-body simulations. The Monte Carlo code enables a more rapid exploration of the evolution of systems with a larger number of stars than N-body simulations. We have carried out a new survey of simulations to explore the evolution of globular clusters with up to $N = 500000$ stars for a range of different star formation efficiencies and half-mass radii. Our study shows the range of initial conditions leading to the clusters' dissolution and those for which the clusters can survive this early evolutionary phase., 13 pages, 6 figures

Compton scattering is a key process shaping spectra formation and accretion flow dynamics in accreting strongly magnetized neutron stars. A strong magnetic field affects the scattering cross section and makes it dependent on photon energy, momentum, and polarization state. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate statistical features of Compton scattering of polarized X-ray radiation in a strong magnetic field. Our analysis is focused on photon gas behaviour well inside the scattering region. We take into account the resonant scattering at the fundamental cyclotron frequency, thermal distribution of electrons at the ground Landau level, and bulk velocity of the electron gas. We show that (i) the photons scattered around the cyclotron energy by the electron gas at rest tend to acquire the final energy close to the cyclotron one with a very small dispersion measure; (ii) the redistribution of photons within the Doppler core of cyclotron resonance differs significantly from the complete redistribution; (iii) the efficiency of momentum transfer from photons to the electron gas is affected by the temperature of electron gas both for photons at cyclotron energy and below it; (iv) the momentum transfer from photons to the electron gas of non-zero bulk velocity is more efficient in the case of magnetic scattering., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D

(Abridged) Surveys of protoplanetary disks in nearby star-forming regions (SFRs) have provided important information on their demographics, but due to their sample sizes, they cannot be used to study how disk properties vary with the environment. We conduct a survey of the unresolved millimeter continuum emission of 873 protoplanetary disks identified by Spitzer in the L1641 and L1647 regions of the Orion A cloud. This is the largest such survey yet, allowing us to identify even weak trends in the median disk mass as a function of position in the cloud and cluster membership. The sample detection rates and median masses are also compared to those of nearby (100 M$_{\oplus}$, and two objects associated with extended dust emission. We infer a median disk dust mass in the full sample of $2.2^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$ M$_{\oplus}$. In L1641 and L1647 median dust masses are $2.1^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$ M$_{\oplus}$ and $2.6^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ M$_{\oplus}$, respectively. The disk mass distribution of the full sample is similar to that of nearby low-mass SFRs at similar ages of 1-3 Myr. We find only weak trends in disk (dust) masses with galactic longitude and between the YSO clusters identified in the sample, with median masses varying by $\lesssim$ 50%. Age differences may explain these median disk mass variations. Apart from this, disk masses are essentially constant at scales of ~100 pc. Many stars do not live alone, but instead have one or more stellar companions. Observations show that these binaries, triples and higher-order multiples are common. Whereas the evolution of single stars and binaries have been studied extensively, the same is not true for the evolution of stellar triples. To fill this gap in our general understanding of stellar lives, we aim to systematically explore the long-term evolution of triples and to map out the most common evolutionary pathways that triples go through. We quantitatively study how triples evolve, which processes are most relevant, and how this differs from binary evolution. We simulate the evolution of several large populations of triples with a population synthesis approach. We make use of the triple evolution code TRES to simulate the evolution of each triple in a consistent way; including three-body dynamics (based on the secular approach), stellar evolution and their mutual influences. We simulate the evolution of the system up until mass transfer starts, the system becomes dynamically unstable, or a Hubble time has passed. We find that stellar interactions are common in triples. Compared to a binary population, we find that the fraction of systems that can undergo mass transfer is about 2 to 3 times larger in triples. Moreover, whereas in binaries the orbits typically reach circularisation before Roche-lobe overflow, this is not true anymore in triples. In our simulations, about 40% of systems retain an eccentric orbit. According to Munoz-Gutierrez et al. (2015) the orbit of comet 1P/Halley is chaotic with a surprisingly small Lyapunov time scale of order its orbital period. In this work we analyse the origin of chaos in Halley's orbit and the growth of perturbations, in order to get a better understanding of this unusually short time scale. We perform N-body simulations to model Halley's orbit in the Solar System and measure the separation between neighbouring trajectories. To be able to interpret the numerical results, we use a semi-analytical map to demonstrate different growth modes, i.e. linear, oscillatory or exponential, and transitions between these modes. We find the Lyapunov time scale of Halley's orbit to be of order 300 years, which is significantly longer than previous estimates in the literature. This discrepancy could be due to the different methods used to measure the Lyapunov time scale. A surprising result is that next to Jupiter, also encounters with Venus contribute to the exponential growth in the next 3000 years. Finally, we note an interesting application of the sub-linear, oscillatory growth mode to an ensemble of bodies moving through the Solar System. Whereas in the absence of encounters with a third body the ensemble spreads out linearly in time, the accumulation of weak encounters can increase the lifetime of such systems due to the oscillatory behaviour., Accepted for MNRAS, 10 pages, 6 figures

In low-mass binary systems, mass transfer is likely to occur via a slow and dense stellar wind when one of the stars is in the AGB phase. Observations show that many binaries that have undergone AGB mass transfer have orbital periods of 1-10 yr, at odds with the predictions of binary population synthesis models. We investigate the mass-accretion efficiency and angular-momentum loss via wind mass transfer in AGB binary systems. We use these quantities to predict the evolution of the orbit. We perform 3D hydrodynamical simulations of the stellar wind lost by an AGB star using the AMUSE framework. We approximate the thermal evolution of the gas by imposing a simple effective cooling balance and we vary the orbital separation and the velocity of the stellar wind. We find that for wind velocities $v_{\infty}$ larger than the relative orbital velocity of the system $v_\mathrm{orb}$ the flow is described by the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton approximation and the angular-momentum loss is modest, leading to an expansion of the orbit. For low wind velocities an accretion disk is formed around the companion and the accretion efficiency as well as the angular-momentum loss are enhanced, implying that the orbit will shrink. We find that the transfer of angular momentum from the orbit to the outflowing gas occurs within a few orbital separations from the center of mass of the binary. Our results suggest that the orbital evolution of AGB binaries can be predicted as a function of the ratio $v_{\infty}/v_\mathrm{orb}$. Our results can provide insight into the puzzling orbital periods of post-AGB binaries and suggest that the number of stars entering into the common-envelope phase will increase. The latter can have significant implications for the expected formation rates of the end products of low-mass binary evolution, such as cataclysmic binaries, type Ia supernova and double white-dwarf mergers. In the past decade, observational evidence that Globular Clusters (GCs) harbour multiple stellar populations has grown steadily. These observations are hard to reconcile with the classical picture of star formation in GCs, which approximates them as a single generation of stars. Bastian et al. recently suggested an evolutionary scenario in which a second, chemically distinct, population is formed by the accretion of chemically enriched material onto the protoplanetary disc of low-mass stars in the initial GC population. Using assumptions that represent the (dynamical) conditions in a typical GC, we investigate whether a low-mass star surrounded by a protoplanetary disc can accrete sufficient enriched material to account for the observed abundances in ‘second generation’ stars. We compare the outcome of two different smoothed particle hydrodynamics codes and focus on the lifetime and stability of the disc and on the gas accretion rate onto both the star and the disc.

The Oort cloud (OC) probably formed more than 4$\,$Gyr ago and has been moving with the Sun in the Galaxy since, exposed to external influences, most prominently to the Galactic tide and passing field stars. Theories suggest that other stars might posses exocomets distributed similarly to our OC. We study the erosion of the OC and the possibility for capturing exocomets during the encounters with such field stars. We carry out simulations of flybys, where both stars are surrounded by a cloud of comets. We measure how many exocomets are transferred to the OC, how many OC's comets are lost, and how this depends on the other star's mass, velocity and impact parameter. Exocomets are transferred to the OC only during relatively slow ($\lesssim0.5\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) and close ($\lesssim10^5\,$AU) flybys and these are expected to be extremely rare. Assuming that all passing stars are surrounded by a cloud of exocomets, we derive that the fraction of exocomets in the OC has been about $10^{-5}$--$10^{-4}$. Finally we simulate the OC for the whole lifetime of the Sun, taking into account the encounters and the tidal effects. The OC has lost 25--65% of its mass, mainly due to stellar encounters, and at most 10% (and usually much less) of its mass can be captured. Observations indicate that stars generally lose their protoplanetary discs on a timescale of about 5 Myr. Which mechanisms are responsible for the disc dissipation is still debated. Here we investigate the movement through an ambient medium as a possible cause of disc dispersal. The ram pressure exerted by the flow can truncate the disc and the accretion of material with no azimuthal angular momentum leads to further disc contraction. We derive a theoretical model from accretion disc theory that describes the evolution of the disc radius, mass, and surface density profile as a function of the density and velocity of the ambient medium. We test our model by performing hydrodynamical simulations of a protoplanetary disc embedded in a flow with different velocities and densities. We find that our model gives an adequate description of the evolution of the disc radius and accretion rate onto the disc. The total disc mass in the simulations follows the theoretically expected trend, except at the lowest density where our simulated discs lose mass owing to continuous stripping. This stripping may be a numerical rather than a physical effect. Some quantitative differences exist between the model predictions and the simulations. These are at least partly caused by numerical viscous effects in the disc and depend on the resolution of the simulation. Our model can be used as a conservative estimate for the process of face-on accretion onto protoplanetary discs, as long as viscous processes in the disc can be neglected. The model predicts that in dense gaseous environments, discs can shrink substantially in size and can, in theory, sweep up an amount of gas of the order of their initial mass. Observations indicate that the dispersal of protoplanetary discs in star clusters occurs on time scales of about 5 Myr. Several processes are thought to be responsible for this disc dispersal. Here we compare two of these processes: dynamical encounters and interaction with the interstellar medium, which includes face-on accretion and ram pressure stripping. We perform simulations of embedded star clusters with parameterisations for both processes to determine the environment in which either of these processes is dominant. We find that face-on accretion, including ram pressure stripping, is the dominant disc truncation process if the fraction of the total cluster mass in stars is $\lesssim 30\,\%$ regardless of the cluster mass and radius. Dynamical encounters require stellar densities $\gtrsim 10^4$ pc$^{-3}$ combined with a mass fraction in stars of $\approx 90\,\%$ to become the dominant process. Our results show that during the embedded phase of the cluster, the truncation of the discs is dominated by face-on accretion and dynamical encounters become dominant when the intra-cluster gas has been expelled. As a result of face-on accretion the protoplanetary discs become compact and their surface density increases. Misalignments between the orbital planes of planets and the equatorial planes of their host stars have been observed in our solar system, in transiting exoplanets, and in the orbital planes of debris discs. We present a mechanism that causes such a spin-orbit misalignment for a protoplanetary disc due to its movement through an ambient medium. Our physical explanation of the mechanism is based on the theoretical solutions to the Stark problem. We test this idea by performing self-consistent hydrodynamical simulations and simplified gravitational $N$-body simulations. The $N$-body model reduces the mechanism to the relevant physical processes. The hydrodynamical simulations show the mechanism in its full extent, including gas-dynamical and viscous processes in the disc which are not included in the theoretical framework. We find that a protoplanetary disc embedded in a flow changes its orientation as its angular momentum vector tends to align parallel to the relative velocity vector. Due to the force exerted by the flow, orbits in the disc become eccentric, which produces a net torque and consequentially changes the orbital inclination. The tilting of the disc causes it to contract. Apart from becoming lopsided, the gaseous disc also forms a spiral arm even if the inclination does not change substantially. The process is most effective at high velocities and observational signatures are therefore mostly expected in massive star-forming regions and around winds or supernova ejecta. Globular clusters (GCs) are known to harbor multiple stellar populations. To explain these observations Bastian et al. suggested a scenario in which a second population is formed by the accretion of enriched material onto the low-mass stars in the initial GC population. The idea is that the low-mass, pre-main sequence stars sweep up gas expelled by the massive stars of the same generation into their protoplanetary disc as they move through the GC core. We perform simulations with 2 different smoothed particle hydrodynamics codes to investigate if a low-mass star surrounded by a protoplanetary disc can accrete the amount of enriched material required in this scenario. We focus on the gas loading rate onto the disc and star as well as on the lifetime of the disc. We find that the gas loading rate is a factor of 2 smaller than the geometric rate, because the effective cross section of the disc is smaller than its surface area. The loading rate is consistent for both codes, irrespective of resolution. The disc gains mass in the high resolution runs, but loses angular momentum on a time scale of 10^4 yrs. Two effects determine the loss of (specific) angular momentum in our simulations: 1) continuous ram pressure stripping and 2) accretion of material with no azimuthal angular momentum. Our study and previous work suggest that the former, dominant process is mainly caused by numerical rather than physical effects, while the latter is not. The latter process causes the disc to become more compact, increasing the surface density profile at smaller radii. The disc size is determined in the first place by the ram pressure when the flow first hits the disc. Further evolution is governed by the decrease in the specific angular momentum of the disc. In this paper we present the Oceanographic Multipurpose Software Environment (OMUSE). This framework aims to provide a homogeneous environment for existing or newly developed numerical ocean simulation codes, simplifying their use and deployment. In this way, OMUSE facilitates the design of numerical experiments that combine ocean models representing different physics or spanning different ranges of physical scales. Rapid development of simulation models is made possible through the creation of simple high-level scripts, with the low-level core part of the abstraction designed to deploy these simulations efficiently on heterogeneous high performance computing resources. Cross-verification of simulation models with different codes and numerical methods is facilitated by the unified interface that OMUSE provides. Reproducibility in numerical experiments is fostered by allowing complex numerical experiments to be expressed in portable scripts that conform to a common OMUSE interface. Here, we present the design of OMUSE as well as the modules and model components currently included, which range from a simple conceptual quasi-geostrophic solver, to the global circulation model POP. We discuss the types of the couplings that can be implemented using OMUSE and present example applications, that demonstrate the efficient and relatively straightforward model initialisation and coupling within OMUSE. These also include the concurrent use of data analysis tools on a running model. We also give examples of multi-scale and multi-physics simulations by embedding a regional ocean model into a global ocean model, and in coupling a surface wave propagation model with a coastal circulation model.

We develop a method to analyse the effect of an asymmetric supernova on hierarchical multiple star systems and present analytical formulas to calculate orbital parameters for surviving binaries or hierarchical triples and runaway velocities for their dissociating equivalents. The effect of an asymmetric supernova on the orbital parameters of a binary system has been studied to a great extent, but this effect on higher multiplicity hierarchical systems has not been explored before. With our method, the supernova effect can be computed by reducing the hierarchical multiple to an effective binary by means of recursively replacing the inner binary by an effective star at the centre of mass of that binary. We apply our method to a hierarchical triple system similar to the progenitor of PSR J1903+0327 suggested by Portegies Zwart et al. We confirm their earlier finding that PSR J1903+0327 could have evolved from a hierarchical triple that became unstable and ejected the secondary star of the inner binary. Furthermore, if such a system did evolve via this mechanism the most probable configuration would be a small supernova kick velocity, an inner binary with a large semi-major axis, and the fraction of mass accreted on to the neutron star to the mass lost by the secondary most likely be between 0.35 and 0.5.

We study the evolution of embedded clusters. The equations of motion of the stars in the cluster are solved by direct N-body integration while taking the effects of stellar evolution and the hydrodynamics of the natal gas content into account. The gravity of the stars and the surrounding gas are coupled self consistently to allow the realistic dynamical evolution of the cluster. While the equations of motion are solved, a stellar evolution code keeps track of the changes in stellar mass, luminosity and radius. The gas liberated by the stellar winds and supernovae deposits mass and energy into the gas reservoir in which the cluster is embedded. We examine cluster models with 1000 stars, but we varied the star formation efficiency (between 0.05-0.5), cluster radius (0.1-1.0 parsec), the degree of virial support of the initial population of stars (0-100%) and the strength of the feedback. We find that an initial star fraction $M_\star/M_{\rm tot} > 0.05$ is necessary for cluster survival. Survival is more likely if gas is not blown out violently by a supernova and if the cluster has time to approach virial equilibrium during out-gassing. While the cluster is embedded, dynamical friction drives early and efficient mass segregation in the cluster. Stars of $m \gtrsim 2\,M_\odot$ are preferentially retained, at the cost of the loss of less massive stars. We conclude that the degree of mass segregation in open clusters such as the Pleiades is not the result of secular evolution but a remnant of its embedded stage.

We present the living application, a method to autonomously manage applications on the grid. During its execution on the grid, the living application makes choices on the resources to use in order to complete its tasks. These choices can be based on the internal state, or on autonomously acquired knowledge from external sensors. By giving limited user capabilities to a living application, the living application is able to port itself from one resource topology to another. The application performs these actions at run-time without depending on users or external workflow tools. We demonstrate this new concept in a special case of a living application: the living simulation. Today, many simulations require a wide range of numerical solvers and run most efficiently if specialized nodes are matched to the solvers. The idea of the living simulation is that it decides itself which grid machines to use based on the numerical solver currently in use. In this paper we apply the living simulation to modelling the collision between two galaxies in a test setup with two specialized computers. This simulation switces at run-time between a GPU-enabled computer in the Netherlands and a GRAPE-enabled machine that resides in the United States, using an oct-tree N-body code whenever it runs in the Netherlands and a direct N-body solver in the United States., 26 pages, 3 figures, accepted by IJHPCA

We perform realistic simulations of the Sun's birth cluster in order to predict the current distribution of solar siblings in the Galaxy. We study the possibility of finding the solar siblings in the Gaia catalogue by using only positional and kinematic information. We find that the number of solar siblings predicted to be observed by Gaia will be around 100 in the most optimistic case, and that a phase space only search in the Gaia catalogue will be extremely difficult. We aim at modelling small groups of young stars such as IRS 13N, 0.1 pc away from Sgr A*, which is suggested to contain a few embedded massive young stellar objects. We perform hydrodynamical simulations to follow the evolution of molecular clumps orbiting about a $4\times10^6 ~ M_{\odot}$ black hole, to constrain the formation and the physical conditions of such groups. We find that, the strong compression due to the black hole along the orbital radius vector of clumps evolving on highly eccentric orbits causes the clumps densities to increase to higher than the tidal density of Sgr A*, and required for star formation. This suggests that the tidal compression from the black hole could support star formation. Astronomical phenomena are governed by processes on all spatial and temporal scales, ranging from days to the age of the Universe (13.8,Gyr) as well as from km size up to the size of the Universe. This enormous range in scales is contrived, but as long as there is a physical connection between the smallest and largest scales it is important to be able to resolve them all, and for the study of many astronomical phenomena this governance is present. Although covering all these scales is a challenge for numerical modelers, the most challenging aspect is the equally broad and complex range in physics, and the way in which these processes propagate through all scales. In our recent effort to cover all scales and all relevant physical processes on these scales we have designed the Astrophysics Multipurpose Software Environment (AMUSE). It is often assumed that the strong gravitational field of a super-massive black hole disrupts an adjacent molecular cloud preventing classical star formation in the deep potential well of the black hole. Yet, young stars have been observed across the entire nuclear star cluster of the Milky Way including the region close ($, Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

[abridged] Aims. We model the number and properties of ultracompact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) in the Galactic Bulge. The objective is to learn about the formation of UCXBs and their evolution, such as the onset of mass transfer and late-time behavior. Methods. The binary population synthesis code SeBa and stellar evolutionary tracks are used to model the UCXB population. The luminosity behavior of UCXBs is predicted using long-term X-ray observations of the known UCXBs and the thermal-viscous disk instability model. Results. In our model, the majority of UCXBs initially have a helium burning star donor. In the absence of a mechanism that destroys old UCXBs, we predict (0.2 - 1.9) x 10^5 UCXBs in the Galactic Bulge, mostly at orbital periods longer than 60 min (a large number of long-period systems also follows from the observed short-period UCXB population). About 5 - 50 UCXBs should be brighter than 10^35 erg/s, mostly persistent sources with orbital periods shorter than 30 min and with degenerate helium and carbon-oxygen donors. This is one order of magnitude more than the observed number of (probably) three. Conclusions. This overprediction of short-period UCXBs implies that fewer systems are formed, or that a super-Eddington mass transfer rate is more difficult to survive than assumed. The very small number of observed long-period UCXBs with respect to short-period UCXBs, the surprisingly high luminosity of the observed UCXBs with orbital periods around 50 min, and the properties of the PSR J1719-1438 system all point to much faster UCXB evolution than expected from angular momentum loss via gravitational wave radiation alone. Old UCXBs, if they still exist, probably have orbital periods longer than 2 h and have become very faint due to either reduced accretion or quiescence, or have become detached. Most stars form in a cluster environment. These stars are initially surrounded by discs from which potentially planetary systems form. Of all cluster environments starburst clusters are probably the most hostile for planetary systems in our Galaxy. The intense stellar radiation and extreme density favour rapid destruction of circumstellar discs via photoevaporation and stellar encounters. Evolving a virialized model of the Arches cluster in the Galactic tidal field we investigate the effect of stellar encounters on circumstellar discs in a prototypical starburst cluster. Despite its proximity to the deep gravitational potential of the Galactic centre only a moderate fraction of members escapes to form an extended pair of tidal tails. Our simulations show that encounters destroy one third of the circumstellar discs in the cluster core within the first 2.5 Myr of evolution, preferentially affecting the least and most massive stars. A small fraction of these events causes rapid ejection and the formation of a weaker second pair of tidal tails that is overpopulated by disc-poor stars. Two predictions arise from our study: (i) If not destroyed by photoevaporation protoplanetary discs of massive late B- and early O-type stars represent the most likely hosts of planet formation in starburst clusters. Many young extra-galactic clusters have a measured velocity dispersion that is too high for the mass derived from their age and total luminosity, which has led to the suggestion that they are not in virial equilibrium. Most of these clusters are confined to a narrow age range centred around 10 Myr because of observational constraints. At this age the cluster light is dominated by luminous evolved stars, such as red supergiants, with initial masses of ~13-22 Msun for which (primordial) binarity is high. In this study we investigate to what extent the observed excess velocity dispersion is the result of the orbital motions of binaries. We demonstrate that estimates for the dynamical mass of young star clusters, derived from the observed velocity dispersion, exceed the photometric mass by up-to a factor of 10 and are consistent with a constant offset in the square of the velocity dispersion. This can be reproduced by models of virialised star clusters hosting a massive star population of which ~25 is in binaries, with typical mass ratios of ~0.6 and periods of ~1000 days. We performed numerical simulations of dynamical encounters between hard massive binaries and a very massive star (VMS; formed through runaway mergers of ordinary stars in the dense core of a young massive star cluster), in order to explore the hypothesis that this dynamical process could be responsible for the origin of high-velocity (\geq 200-400 km/s) early or late B-type stars. We estimated the typical velocities produced in encounters between very tight massive binaries and VMSs (of mass of \geq 200 Msun) and found that about 3-4 per cent of all encounters produce velocities of \geq 400 km/s, while in about 2 per cent of encounters the escapers attain velocities exceeding the Milky Ways's escape velocity. We therefore argue that the origin of high-velocity (\geq 200-400 km/s) runaway stars and at least some so-called hypervelocity stars could be associated with dynamical encounters between the tightest massive binaries and VMSs formed in the cores of star clusters. We also simulated dynamical encounters between tight massive binaries and single ordinary 50-100 Msun stars. We found that from 1 to \simeq 4 per cent of these encounters can produce runaway stars with velocities of \geq 300-400 km/s (typical of the bound population of high-velocity halo B-type stars) and occasionally (in less than 1 per cent of encounters) produce hypervelocity (\geq 700 km/s) late B-type escapers., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure, to appear in Star Clusters -- Basic Galactic Building Blocks throughout Time and Space, Proceed. of the IAU Symp. 266, eds. In the cores of young dense star clusters repeated stellar collisions involving the same object can occur, which has been suggested to lead to the formation of an intermediate-mass black hole. In order to verify this scenario we compute the detailed evolution of the merger remnant of three sequences. We follow the evolution until the onset of carbon burning and estimate the final remnant mass to determine the ultimate fate of a runaway merger sequence. We use a detailed stellar evolution code to follow the evolution of the collision product. At each collision, we mix the two colliding stars, taking account of mass loss during the collision. During the stellar evolution we apply mass loss rates from the literature, as appropriate for the evolutionary stage of the merger remnant. We compute models for high ($Z=0.02$) and low ($Z=0.001$) metallicity to quantify metallicity effects. We find that the merger remnant becomes a Wolf-Rayet star before the end of core hydrogen burning. Mass loss from stellar winds dominates over the mass increase due to repeated mergers for all three merger sequences that we consider. In none of our high metallicity models an intermediate-mass black hole is formed, instead our models have a mass of 10--14 \Msun{} at the onset of carbon burning. For low metallicity we expect the final remnant of the merger sequence to explode as a pair creation supernova. We find that our metal-rich models become inflated as a result of developing an extended low-density envelope. This may increase the probability of further collisions, but self-consistent $N$-body calculations with detailed evolution of runaway mergers are required to verify this., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Updated with accepted version

We present results of a population synthesis study for semidetached short orbital period binaries which contain low-mass(4 Msun) accretors. Evolution of these binaries is determined by nuclear evolution of the donors and/or orbital angular momentum loss due to magnetic braking by the stellar wind of the donors and gravitational wave radiation. According to our model, the estimated total number of this type of black-hole binaries in the Galaxy is about 10000. If the magnetic braking is described by the Verbunt & Zwaan formula, the model predicts around 3000 transient systems with periods >2 hours and around 300 luminous stable systems with periods between 3 and 8 hours. Several dozens of these bright systems should be above the RXTE ASM sensitivity limit. The absence of such systems implies that angular momentum losses are reduced by a factor more than 2 with respect to the Verbunt & Zwaan prescription. We show that it is unlikely that the transient behaviour of black-hole short-period X-ray binaries is explained by the evolved nature of the stellar companion. A substantial fraction of black-hole binaries with periods >3 hours could be faint with truncated, stable cold accretion discs as proposed by Menou et al. Most of the semidetached black-hole binaries are expected to have periods shorter than ~2 hours. We present the open source Astrophysical Multi-purpose Software Environment (AMUSE, www.amusecode.org), a component library for performing astrophysical simulations involving different physical domains and scales. It couples existing codes within a Python framework based on a communication layer using MPI. The interfaces are standardized for each domain and their implementation based on MPI guarantees that the whole framework is well-suited for distributed computation. It includes facilities for unit handling and data storage. Currently it includes codes for gravitational dynamics, stellar evolution, hydrodynamics and radiative transfer. Within each domain the interfaces to the codes are as similar as possible. We describe the design and implementation of AMUSE, as well as the main components and community codes currently supported and we discuss the code interactions facilitated by the framework.
