Japanese quails in wild life live in small groups with females being even solitary during the laying period. Although it is a poultry species widely used for egg production, information regarding laying behavior motivations or influencing variables is scarce. Our study focuses on evaluating along 7 d the quail laying behavior in a novel environmental set up. This set up allows the female to choose between remaining separated from a conspecific in one side of the apparatus or to voluntarily enter their space (box-mate side) and interact with it. We evaluated whether the female insemination status prior to enter the environmental set up, and the presence of a female or a male partner in the box-mate side can influence their laying and social behavior. Thus, 4 experimental groups were established. Females spent a higher (P0.05) percentage of time in the box-mate side than in their separated sector in all groups. In 3 of the 4 experimental groups (non-inseminated females interacting with a female or a male box-mate, and inseminated females interacting with a male box-mate) females also laid a greater percentage (≥65%, P0.05, in all cases) of eggs in the box-mate sector than in their separated sector. However, the group of inseminated females that interacted with a female box-mate shifted their egg distribution and laid equally between both sides of the apparatus. Aggressive social interactions were reduced (P0.05) throughout the testing days but this was depending upon the female insemination status and the sex of their box-mate. Findings suggest that females can change their laying side choice when they are inseminated but depending on the sex identity of their box-mate partners. Thus, providing quail female breeders with the option of laying their eggs in separated enclosures from conspecifics could be key to favor their well-being.

The incidence of cutaneous melanoma is increasing in Italy, in parallel with the implementation of gene panels. Therefore, a revision of national genetic assessment criteria for hereditary melanoma may be needed. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of susceptibility variants in the largest prospective cohort of Italian high-risk melanoma cases studied to date.From 25 Italian centers, we recruited 1044 family members and germline sequenced 940 cutaneous melanoma index cases through a shared gene panel, which included the following genes: CDKN2A, CDK4, BAP1, POT1, ACD, TERF2IP, MITF and ATM. We assessed detection rate according to familial status, region of origin, number of melanomas and presence and type of non-melanoma tumors.The overall detection rate was 9.47% (5.53% analyzing CDKN2A alone), ranging from 5.14% in sporadic multiple melanoma cases (spoMPM) with two cutaneous melanomas to 13.9% in familial cases with at least three affected members. Three or more cutaneous melanomas in spoMPM cases, pancreatic cancer and region of origin predicted germline status [odds ratio (OR) = 3.23, 3.15, 2.43, P0.05]. Conversely, age60 years was a negative independent predictor (OR = 0.13, P = 0.008), and was the age category with the lowest detection rate, especially for CDKN2A. Detection rate was 19% when cutaneous melanoma and pancreatic cancer clustered together.Gene panel doubled the detection rate given by CDKN2A alone. National genetic testing criteria may need a revision, especially regarding age cut-off (60) in the absence of strong family history, pancreatic cancer and/or a high number of cutaneous melanomas.

Study question Is the live-birth-rate (LBR) different when comparing artificial (AC) and modified-natural (M-NC) cycle for endometrial preparation to vitrified-warmed euploid blastocyst transfer? Summary answer The LBR after vitrified-warmed euploid blastocyst transfer seem independent of the endometrial preparation administered. What is known already Only the transfer of a competent embryo on a receptive endometrium might result in successful implantation. Three main protocols for endometrial preparation to vitrified-warmed embryo transfer exist: NC, M-NC, and AC. None among them, though, has been shown more appropriate than the others to date, especially since, only in a few studies, the analysis was restricted to single euploid blastocyst transfers to limit the impact of embryonic issues on implantation. In conclusion, no clear consensus exists and the choice is still largely based on menstrual/ovarian cycle characteristics and patient’s needs. Study design, size, duration All first vitrified-warmed single euploid blastocyst transfers performed between April–2013 and March–2020 were included in the analysis. Endometrial preparation was conducted with either an AC (N = 1211) or a M-NC (N = 673). The protocol was chosen based on patients’ logistical reasons. The primary outcome was the LBR per transfer. Sub-analyses based on blastocyst quality and day of development were conducted. Birthweight, gestational age, gestational and perinatal issues were secondary outcomes. Participants/materials, setting, methods AC: oral estradiol-valerate 3-times/day from day2–3 of the cycle until the endometrial thickness reached ≥7mm, then 600 mg/day of micronized progesterone. The transfer was conducted on day6 of progesterone administration. M-NC: an intramuscular dose of 10,000IU hCG was administrated when the leading follicle was >17 mm and the endometrium was thicker than 7mm and trilaminar, plus 400 mg/day of micronized-progesterone as luteal phase support starting 36–40hr post-hCG. The transfer was conducted on day7 after trigger. Main results and the role of chance The two groups were similar for maternal age at retrieval (38.0±3.3yr) and transfer (38.3±3.3yr), reproductive history, embryological outcomes of the IVF cycle, body-mass-index, basal hormonal levels, and blastocyst features (Gardner’s classification: AA = 73%, AB/BA=11%, BB/AC/CA=8%, CC/BC/CB=8%; day5=48%, day6=47%, day7=5%). The LBR was 46.7% (N = 565/1211) and 49.9% (N = 336/673) after AC and M-NC, respectively, resulting in an odds-ratio 1.14, 95%CI:0.94–1.37. The absence of significant differences was confirmed also when adjusted for blastocyst quality and day of full-development (1.16, 95%CI:0.96–1.41). Among the 565 and 336 deliveries, the birthweight was similar (3290.3±470.7 versus 3251.7±521.5 g, Mann-Whitney-U-test=0.5), the gestational age was similar (38.5±1.7 versus 38.4±1.9 weeks, Mann-Whitney-U-test=0.5). Also, the rates of newborns who were normal (81% versus 82%), large (8% versus 9%), and small (11% versus 9%) for gestational age were similar (Chi-squared-test=0.5). The rates of patients experiencing gestational (6% versus 7%) and/or perinatal issues (3% versus 3%) were also similar (Fisher’s-exact-tests=0.4). Limitations, reasons for caution This is a retrospective study conducted in poor prognosis patients indicated to preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies. Future randomized controlled trials and cost-effectiveness analysis are desirable, as well as studies in different patient populations. Lastly, each gestational/perinatal issue shall be analyzed per se (e.g. different placentation disorders). Wider implications of the findings: The absence of clinical and perinatal differences between the two protocols for endometrial preparation supports the adoption, whenever needed, of AC. This approach, in fact, allows a higher flexibility in patients’ and daily workload management. Trial registration number None

Background: Sarcopenia, defined as low muscle mass with reduced function, is frequently encountered in cirrhotic patients and is a major predictor of adverse events, including post-liver transplant (LT) outcome. Objectives: This study assessed the impact of sarcopenia using computed tomography (CT)-based measurements on post-LT mortality and complications. Methods: From January 2008 to June 2016, 646 adult patients underwent 613 LTs at our institution. We analyzed the postoperative outcome of 287 patients who had pathologically proven cirrhosis on the explanted liver and who had performed a CT examination three months before LT. Psoas muscle density (PMD) was detected for every patient using standard instruments present in the radiological workstation and was related to postoperative survival rates and complications. Statistical analysis was carried out using the appropriate tests. Results: Postoperative mortality was 6.3%. At least one grade III-IV postoperative complication was experienced by 121 patients. Respiratory and infective complications occurred in 30 and 32 patients, respectively. Also, PMD was an independent predictor of postoperative mortality (P = 0.021), respiratory complications (P = 0.015), and infections (P = 0.010). The ROC analysis identified a PMD ≤ 43.72 HU as the best cutoff value for predicting 90-day mortality after LT. Conclusions: Psoas muscle density accurately predicted post-LT mortality and complications. Its ease and low-cost determination can allow widespread use of this parameter to improve clinical care and help with the decision to give these patients some priority on the transplant waiting list.

Object-audio workflows for traditional flat broadcasts have recently appeared after the introduction of new audio formats, such as MPEG-H and Atmos. These formats enable the creation of object-based mixes that can be dynamically rendered by the end user depending on their reproduction hardware. Until very recently, only post-produced content was being created for these formats, but new broadcast standards in the U.S. and Asia, as well as new hardware encoding engines, have made live sports production in these formats more feasible. These formats allow for a fuller, more immersive sound design and allow for some possibilities of personalization. The issue then arises on how to capture live action from the field that would provide these object-audio workflows with the desired isolated sounds and accompanying metadata. Current capture systems provide a suboptimal amount of isolation from the crowd to highlight individual action sounds and dialog from the field. Also, in most cases, placing traditional microphones near the action is not possible. In this paper, we present new microphone techniques and systems enabling better performance for sound capture that fulfill the needs of future object-audio broadcast formats. This includes beamforming techniques, automatic steering, and systems management of microphone arrays.

Aims. The collimation of relativistic jets in galaxies is a poorly understood process. Detailed radio studies of the jet collimation region have been performed so far in few individual objects, providing important constraints for jet formation models. However, the extent of the collimation zone as well as the nature of the external medium possibly confining the jet are still debated. Methods. In this article we present a multi-frequency and multi-scale analysis of the radio galaxy NGC 315, including the use of mm-VLBI data up to 86 GHz, aimed at revealing the evolution of the jet collimation profile. We then consider results from the literature to compare the jet expansion profile in a sample of 27 low-redshift sources, mainly comprising radio galaxies and BL Lacs, classified based on the accretion properties as low-excitation (LEG) and high-excitation (HEG) galaxies. Results.The jet collimation in NGC 315 is completed on sub-parsec scales. A transition from a parabolic to conical jet shape is detected at $z_{t}=0.58\pm0.28$ parsecs or ${\sim}5\times 10^3$ Schwarzschild radii ($R_{S}$) from the central engine, a distance which is much smaller than the Bondi radius, $r_{B}{\sim}92$ $\rm pc$, estimated based on X-ray data. The jet in this and in few other LEGs in our sample may be initially confined by a thick disk extending out to ${\sim}10^3$-$10^4$ $R_{S}$. A comparison between the mass-scaled jet expansion profiles of all sources indicates that jets in HEGs are surrounded by thicker disk-launched sheaths and collimate on larger scales with respect to jets in LEGs. These results suggest that disk winds play an important role in the jet collimation mechanism, particularly in high-luminosity sources. In a referenceless imaging setup with coherent light control based on a transmission matrix approach, an endoscope, composed of multimode fibers, is implemented in order to set focus at specific targets and enable structured illumination.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was compare short- and long-term outcomes between robotic (RG) and standard open gastrectomy (OG). METHODS: This is a single-center propensity score-matched study including patients who underwent RG or OG for gastric cancer between 2008 and 2018. RESULTS: In total, 191 patients could be included for analysis. Of 60 RG patients, 49 could be matched. After matching, significant differences in baseline characteristics were no longer present. Operative time was significantly longer (451 min, IQR: 392-513) in the RG group than in the OG (262 min, IQR: 225-330) (P < .0001). No significant differences in postoperative complications between RG (n = 15, 30.6%) and OG (n = 15, 30.6%) were seen (P = 1.000). Overall survival was comparable between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: RG is feasible and safe. With regard to long-term oncologic outcomes, survivals in the RG group were similar to those in OG group.

In this work, the terahertz frequency range is exploited. From organic materials to metamaterials, different algorithms able to extract their effective electromagnetic properties were developed. In order to characterize different concentrations of lactose, such samples were submitted to a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (TTDS) to experimentally acquire their transmission spectrum. With only these input data, the retrieval method employed parametrization of the refractive index by using the Lorentz model. Extending the studies to metamaterials, single and hybrid geometries based on split ring resonator (SRR) were simulated and characterized utilizing the Kramer-Kronig relations in an algorithm whose response was the effective permittivity and permeability of this class of materials.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that sigmoidectomy with primary anastomosis is superior to Hartmann's procedure. The likelihood of stoma reversal after primary anastomosis has been reported to be higher and reversal seems to be associated with lower morbidity and mortality. Although promising, results from these previous studies remain uncertain because of potential selection bias. Therefore, this study aimed to assess outcomes after Hartmann's procedure versus sigmoidectomy with primary anastomosis, with or without defunctioning ileostomy, for perforated diverticulitis with purulent or faecal peritonitis (Hinchey III or IV disease) in a randomised trial. METHODS: A multicentre, randomised, open-label, superiority trial was done in eight academic hospitals and 34 teaching hospitals in Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands. Patients aged between 18 and 85 years who presented with clinical signs of general peritonitis and suspected perforated diverticulitis were eligible for inclusion if plain abdominal radiography or CT scan showed diffuse free air or fluid. Patients with Hinchey I or II diverticulitis were not eligible for inclusion. Patients were allocated (1:1) to Hartmann's procedure or sigmoidectomy with primary anastomosis, with or without defunctioning ileostomy. Patients were enrolled by the surgeon or surgical resident involved, and secure online randomisation software was used in the operating room or by the trial coordinator on the phone. The estimation of photometric redshifts (photo-s) has been consolidated as the standard strategy to bypass the high production costs and incompleteness of spectroscopic redshift samples. Training-based photo- methods require the preparation of a high-quality list of spectroscopic redshifts, which needs to be constantly updated. The photo- training, validation, and estimation must be performed in a consistent and reproducible way in order to accomplish the scientific requirements. To meet this purpose, we developed an integrated web-based data interface that not only provides the framework to carry out the above steps in a systematic way, enabling the ease testing and comparison of different algorithms, but also addresses the processing requirements by parallelizing the calculation in a transparent way for the user. This framework called the Science Portal (hereafter Portal) was developed in the context the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to facilitate scientific analysis. In this paper, we show how the Portal can provide a reliable environment to access vast datasets, provide validation algorithms and metrics, even in the case of multiple photo-s methods. It is possible to maintain the provenance between the steps of a chain of workflows while ensuring reproducibility of the results. We illustrate how the Portal can be used to provide photo- estimates using the DES first year (Y1A1) data. While the DES collaboration is still developing techniques to obtain more precise photo-s, having a structured framework like the one presented here is critical for the systematic vetting of DES algorithmic improvements and the consistent production of photo-zs in future DES releases., Published by Elsevier, Amsterdam [u.a.]

Formerly known as the gap in the electromagnetic spectrum, the terahertz technology is being developed in several fields of science. A terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system will be presented and used to obtain transmission spectra of organic samples. This work proposes the implementation of an algorithm able to extract effective optical parameters of the analyzed samples in terahertz and also their thickness, using only the transmittance as experimental data. Lactose samples were characterized using the proposed method.

Single Photon Avalanche diodes (SPADs) were first realized more than five decades ago[1][1], and have now been industrialized for mass production in the 130 nm CMOS technology node by STMicroelectronics (STM). In this paper we present the latest STM SPAD with an excellent NIR photon detection probability (>5% at 850nm), a dark count rate median of 100 cps at room temperature and a low breakdown voltage of 14.2V. The dead time of the SPAD is approximately 25 ns, leading to a maximum count rate of 40 Mcps. Thanks to the 130 nm gate length of the CMOS technology used and the associated high digital gate density, complex digital signal processing can be implemented allowing fully integrated systems to be realized. The low bias required by the SPAD makes it possible for voltage generation to be achieved on-chip (e.g. charge pumped). We introduce our first generation time-of-flight system (VL6180) based on the STM SPAD technology, which is capable of ranging up to 60 cm in 60 ms. Ranging capabilities and accuracy are measured using a set of moving targets with reflectance of 5%, 17% and 88% in a fully automated test bed. To the best of our knowledge this was the first high volume SPAD-based device. To our knowledge this is the first time details of SPAD performance over production volumes and lifetime have been presented.

Identification of parameters predicting assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) success is a major goal of research in reproduction. Quality of gametes is essential to achieve good quality embryos and increase the success of ARTs. We evaluated two sperm parameters, chromatin maturity and expression of the sperm specific calcium channel CATSPER, in relation to ART outcomes in 206 couples undergoing ARTs. Chromatin maturity was evaluated by Chromomycin A3 (CMA3) for protamination and Aniline Blue (AB) for histone persistence and CATSPER expression by a flow cytometric method. CMA3 positivity and CATSPER expression significantly predicted the attainment of good quality embryos with an OR of 6.6 and 14.3 respectively, whereas AB staining was correlated with fertilization rate. In the subgroup of couples with women ≤35 years, CATSPER also predicted achievement of clinical pregnancy (OR = 4.4). Including CMA3, CATSPER and other parameters affecting ART outcomes (female age, female factor and number of MII oocytes), a model that resulted able to predict good embryo quality with high accuracy was developed. CMA3 staining and CATSPER expression may be considered two applicable tools to predict ART success and useful for couple counseling. This is the first study demonstrating a role of CATSPER expression in embryo development after ARTs programs.

Summary To understand why livers from aged donors are successfully used for transplants, we looked for markers of liver aging in 71 biopsies from donors aged 12–92 years before transplants and in 11 biopsies after transplants with high donor–recipient age-mismatch. We also assessed liver function in 36 age-mismatched recipients. The major findings were the following: (i) miR-31-5p, miR-141-3p, and miR-200c-3p increased with age, as assessed by microRNAs (miRs) and mRNA transcript profiling in 12 biopsies and results were validated by RT–qPCR in a total of 58 biopsies; (ii) telomere length measured by qPCR in 45 samples showed a significant age-dependent shortage; (iii) a bioinformatic approach combining transcriptome and miRs data identified putative miRs targets, the most informative being GLT1, a glutamate transporter expressed in hepatocytes. GLT1 was demonstrated by luciferase assay to be a target of miR-31-5p and miR-200c-3p, and both its mRNA (RT–qPCR) and protein (immunohistochemistry) significantly decreased with age in liver biopsies and in hepatic centrilobular zone, respectively; (iv) miR-31-5p, miR-141-3p and miR-200c-3p expression was significantly affected by recipient age (older environment) as assessed in eleven cases of donor–recipient extreme age-mismatch; (v) the analysis of recipients plasma by N-glycans profiling, capable of assessing liver functions and biological age, showed that liver function recovered after transplants, independently of age-mismatch, and recipients apparently ‘rejuvenated’ according to their glycomic age. In conclusion, we identified new markers of aging in human liver, their relevance in donor–recipient age-mismatches in transplantation, and offered positive evidence for the use of organs from old donors.

GABA A receptors (GABA ARs) are typically expressed at synaptic or nonsynaptic sites mediating phasic and tonic inhibition respectively. These two forms of inhibition conjointly control various network oscillations. To disentangle their roles in thalamocortical rhythms we focally deleted synaptic ?2 subunit containing GABA ARs in the thalamus using viral intervention in mice. After successful removal of ?2 subunit clusters spontaneous and evoked GABAergic synaptic currents disappeared in thalamocortical cells when the presynaptic reticular thalamic (nRT) neurons fired in tonic mode. However when nRT cells fired in burst mode slow phasic GABA AR mediated events persisted indicating a dynamic burst specific recruitment of nonsynaptic GABA ARs. In vivo removal of synaptic GABA ARs reduced the firing of individual thalamocortical cells but did not abolish slow oscillations or sleep spindles. We conclude that nonsynaptic GABA ARs are recruited in a phasic manner specifically during burst firing of nRT cells and provide sufficient GABA AR activation to control major thalamocortical oscillations.

BACKGROUND: The Hirsch index (h-index) is recognized as an effective way to summarize an individual's scientific research output. However, a benchmark for evaluating surgeon scientists in the field of hepatic surgery is still not available. METHODS: A total of 3,251 authors who published between 1949 and 2011 were identified using the Scopus identification number. The h-index, the total number of cited document, the total number of citations, and the scientific age were calculated for each author using both Scopus and Google Scholar. RESULTS:The median h-index was 6 and the median scientific age, assessed with Google Scholar, was 19 years. The numbers of cited documents, numbers of citations, and h-indexes obtained from Scopus and Google Scholar showed good correlation with one another; however, the results from the 2 databases were modified in different ways by scientific age. By plotting scientific age against h-index percentiles an h-index growth chart for both Scopus database and Google Scholar was provided. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis provides a first benchmark to assess surgeon scientists' productivity in the field of liver surgery.

Patients with diabetes mellitus suffer either from destruction of pancreatic beta-cells or progressive deterioration of their function. Thus, transplantation of an intact beta-cell population fully capable of insulin secretion is the only means to cure this disease. Despite glycemic benefits and decrease in risks for late complications, islet transplantation or complete pancreatic grafting in humans remains a challenge due to necessity of lifetime immunosuppression and increasingly sparse donor resources. Current paper presents a review of modern endeavours to obtain a limitless source for glucose-sensitive insulin secreting cells. We discuss, in particular, complex aspects of beta-cell proliferation and/or neogenesis in vivo, issues with xenogenous pancreatic islets, and latest advances in controlled differentiation of embryonic and induced polypotent stem cells ? the most promising and relevant source of beta-cells.

COSMO-SkyMed di Seconda generazione (CSG) Ground Segment is based on an interoperable and multi-mission design, allowing the exhibition of CSG services to external partners and the access through CSG to services belonging to other Earth Observation partners. Moreover CSG Ground Segment design allows supporting the cooperation by expansion through replication of UGS instances according to different access options. This way, the CSG GS will be able to manage Earth Observation Foreign Missions by enabling centralized and multi-mission access in an integrated environment, offering very valuable technological solutions to the Defense and Civilian communities. This paper provides a thorough description of the CSG system access portfolio.

Background The strategy of salvage transplantation for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma is based on the premise that tumour recurrence will be still transplantable at the time of recurrence. However, patients can not only present non-transplantable recurrence but can also be over the age limit accepted for transplantation. Aims To measure the risk of being too old for salvage transplantation of patients resected for hepatocellular carcinoma within Milan criteria. Methods A Markov simulation model was developed on the basis of published literature. Results The risk of being too old for salvage transplantation depends on the time-span between age at hepatic resection and age limit, and the expected median waiting-time. Patients resected at an age 2 or 3 years below the age limit carry a risk of being too old that overcomes the probability of receiving transplantation. Salvage strategy can cause harm that depends on the tumour characteristics and degree of portal hypertension, becoming maximal for patients with multiple tumours, clinical signs of portal hypertension and increased bilirubin levels. Conclusions The best strategy to adopt should be balanced between the risk of being too old and the expected transplant benefit, but salvage strategy could be pursued if it did not turn into significant harm in comparison to primary transplantation.

At the present moment in time, renewable energy sources have achieved great significance for modern day society. The main reason for this boom is the need to use alternative sources of energy to fossil fuels which are free of CO2 emissions and contamination. Among the current renewable energy sources, the growth of wind farms has been spectacular. Wind power uses the kinetic energy of the wind to produce a clean form of energy without producing contamination or emissions. The problem it raises is that of quantifying to what extent it is a totally clean form of energy. In this sense we have to consider not only the emissions produced while they are in operation, but also the contamination and environmental impact resulting from their manufacture and the future dismantling of the turbines when they come to the end of their working life. The aim of this study is to analyse the real impact that this technology has if we consider the whole life cycle. The application of the ISO 14040 standard [ISO. ISO 14040. Environmental management – life cycle assessment – principles and framework. Geneva, Switzerland: International Standard Organization; 1998.] allows us to make an LCA study quantifying the overall impact of a wind turbine and each of its components. Applying this methodology, the wind turbine is analysed during all the phases of its life cycle, from cradle to grave, with regard to the manufacture of its key components (through the incorporation of cut-off criteria), transport to the wind farm, subsequent installation, start-up, maintenance and final dismantling and stripping down into waste materials and their treatment.

In this paper we present measurements of velocity dispersions and Lick indices for 509 galaxies in the local Universe, based on high signal-to-noise, long slit spectra obtained with the 1.52 m ESO telescope at La Silla. The conversion of our measurements into the Lick/IDS system was carried out following the general prescription of Worthey and Ottaviani 1997. Comparisons of our measurements with those of other authors show, in general, good agreement. We also examine the dependence between these indices (e.g., Hbeta, Mg_2, Fe5270 and NaD) and the central velocity dispersion (sigma), and we find that they are consistent with those previously reported in the literature. Benefiting from the relatively large size of the sample, we are able to investigate the dependence of these relations on morphology and environment, here represented by the local galaxy density. We find that for metallic lines these relations show no significant dependence on environment or morphology, except in the case of NaD, which shows distinct behavior for E and S0. On the other hand, the Hbeta-logsigma shows a significant difference as a function of the local density of galaxies, which we interpret as being caused by the truncation of star formation in high density environments. Comparing our results with those obtained by other authors we find a few discrepancies, adding to the ongoing debate about the nature of these relations. Finally, we report that the scatter of the Mg indices versus sigma relations correlate with Hbeta, suggesting that age may contribute to the scatter. Furthermore, this scatter shows no significant dependence on morphology or environment. The results of time-resolved photoluminescence studies of heterostructures containing monolayer arrays of InAs/GaAs quantum dots are presented. A two-component time dependence of intensity of photoluminescence from the ground state of quantum dots, with characteristic times of the slow component up to hundreds of nanoseconds and those of rapid one several nanoseconds, is studied. It is shown that the slow component is determined by the transport of nonequilibrium charge carriers between the quantum dots. At low temperatures, the time of the slow component is determined by tunneling, and at high temperatures by thermal escape of nonequilibrium charge carriers. The ratio of the contributions of tunneling and thermal escape is determined by the degree of isolation of quantum dots. A theoretical model is constructed that describes the effect of the dynamics of carrier transport on the emergence and decay of the slow component of photoluminescence.

The ability of detecting human postures is particularly important in several fields like ambient intelligence, surveillance, elderly care, and human-machine interaction. This problem has been studied in recent years in the computer vision community, but the proposed solutions still suffer from some limitations due to the difficulty of dealing with complex scenes (e.g., occlusions, different view points, etc.). In this article, we present a system for posture tracking and classification based on a stereo vision sensor. The system provides both a robust way to segment and track people in the scene and 3D information about tracked people. The proposed method is based on matching 3D data with a 3D human body model. Relevant points in the model are then tracked over time with temporal filters and a classification method based on hidden Markov models is used to recognize principal postures. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the system in determining human postures with different orientations of the people with respect to the stereo sensor, in presence of partial occlusions and under different environmental conditions.

The application of quantum key distribution (QKD) has raised particular demands for single-photon detectors. One of the most promising candidates at the low-loss optical fibre communications windows is the planar geometry InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode. These detectors have been modelled, fabricated and characterised at 1.55 mum wavelength. Their performance in terms of single-photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, timing jitter and afterpulsing behaviour are reported and compared with the best commercially available, linear multiplication avalanche photodiodes operated in Geiger-mode. Their use in the application of QKD is discussed.

Summary Interferon beta (IFN-β) is among the first-line treatment options for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A potential caveat of therapy, however, is the development of neutralizing antibodies (NAb) and/or neutralizing activity (NA) non-antibody mediated, although debate is still ongoing as to whether NAb significantly hampers the efficacy of the drug or rather represents an immunologically irrelevant epiphenomenon. In the present study, we describe the effect of NAb on IFN-β-1b through clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcome measures of five relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients who were treated with 250 μg of subcutaneously administered IFN-β-1b every other day and developed NAb at varying titres and times during the course of therapy. Despite the small number of NAb+ patients, heterogeneity in MRI/clinical response to IFN-β-1b was identified. Response to IFN-β-1b therapy was observed in the absence or presence of NAb. Also observed was failure to IFN-β-1b coincident with high and sustained NAb titres, but also before NAb development or in the presence of low NAb titres. Multiple MRI and NAb measurements performed within the same individual allow for a better description of the complex heterogeneous response to IFN-β-1b with respect to NAb occurrence.

STUDY QUESTION Is CatSper1 expression in human spermatozoa related to semen parameter values and sperm functions? SUMMARY ANSWER CatSper1 expression is positively related to progressive and hyperactivated (HA) motility, [Ca(2+)]i responsiveness to progesterone but not the acrosome reaction (AR). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The role of cationic channel of sperm (CatSper) in sperm functions is clear in animal models but less defined in human sperm cells. Current knowledge is mostly based on low specificity CatSper inhibitors showing agonistic and toxic effects on human spermatozoa and is thus of little help in clarifying the role of the CatSper channel in human sperm functions. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION CatSper1 protein expression was evaluated in 115 men undergoing semen analysis for couple infertility. CatSper1 expression was related to routine semen parameters, motility kinematic parameters and basal and progesterone-stimulated [Ca(2+)]i and the AR. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS CatSper1 expression was evaluated (n = 85 normozoospermic, n = 30 asthenozoospermic patients) by immunofluorescence coupled to flow cytometry leading to quantitative measurement of the percentage of ejaculated sperm cells expressing the protein. Semen analysis was evaluated according to World Health Organization guidelines. Kinematic parameters were evaluated by a computer-aided sperm analysis system. [Ca(2+)]i was measured by a spectrofluorimetric method in fura-2-loaded spermatozoa. The AR was evaluated in live sperm cells by fluorescent-labeled lectin. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE CatSper1 protein expression in spermatozoa was reduced in asthenozoospermic men (mean ± SD: 53.0 ± 15.5%, n = 30 versus 67.9 ± 17.1% in normozoospermic, n = 85, P < 0.01) and was significantly correlated with progressive (r = 0.36, P < 0.001), total (r = 0.35, P < 0.001) and HA (r = 0.41, P < 0.005) motility. In addition to a higher percentage of spermatozoa not expressing CatSper1, asthenozoospermic men showed a large number of spermatozoa with immunofluorescent signal localized outside the principal piece compared with those in normozoospermia. A significant positive correlation was found between CatSper1 protein expression and the increase of [Ca(2+)]i in response to progesterone (r = 0.36, P < 0.05, n = 40) but not with basal [Ca(2+)]i. No correlation was found with the AR, either basal or in response to progesterone. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The study is partly descriptive. Furthermore, we cannot rule out the possibility that some round cells remain after a single round of 40% density gradient centrifugation or that this step may have removed some defective or slow swimming sperm, and therefore this preparation may not be representative of the entire sperm sample. Although our data suggest that CatSper1 may be a useful marker for infertility, and a possible contraceptive target, any clinical application is limited without further research. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Our results demonstrate an association of CatSper1 expression with human sperm progressive and HA motility and provide preliminary evidence that lack of expression or mislocalization of CatSper1 in spermatozoa may be involved in the pathogenesis of asthenozoospermia. However, mechanistic studies are needed to confirm that the correlations between CatSper1 expression and sperm functions are causative. Contents Fifty-seven genital tracts of regularly slaughtered culled Piedmontese cows, aged 7.4 ± 4.3 years (mean ± SD), range: 2.6–15.6 years, were grossly and microscopically examined. DNA extracted from oviducts was subjected to PCR to evaluate the presence of Chlamydia spp. The 15 PCR-positive oviducts were subjected to Sanger sequencing and showed the presence of Chamydia abortus, with an identity range between 99 and 100%. Nine of the PCR-positive samples belonged to the 24 animals with a normal macroscopic appearance of the whole genital tract (percentage of positive oviducts in normal genital tracts 9/24 = 37.5%), while six belonged to the 33 genital tracts with lesions in one or more organs (percentage of positive oviducts in pathological genital tracts 6/33 = 18.1%); of these, a single animal had salpingitis. The detection of C. abortus in bovine oviducts is of particular interest because it has never been previously investigated or reported.

This paper describes the design, fabrication, and performance of planar-geometry InGaAs-InP devices which were specifically developed for single-photon detection at a wavelength of 1550 nm. General performance issues such as dark count rate, single-photon detection efficiency, afterpulsing, and jitter are described.

Abstract Production optimization of hydrocarbon fields is a complex task, due to the high number of processes involved and their synergy. It is therefore challenging to manage an integrated production system, comprising the reservoir and the production wells, the gathering system, and the process plant. The optimization process is driven by input data subjected to uncertainties due to variability, observational errors, and lack of up-to-date measurements. As a consequence, the aforementioned uncertainties are carried out through the simulation process up to final results. This work presents a workflow for oil & gas production optimization under uncertainties, that is structured in three phases. In the first phase, the integrated optimization process with powerful evolutionary algorithms takes place. The result is an optimized field configuration characterized by a deterministic production increase in respect to the initial production. After having identified the uncertain input variables in the optimization process, a Monte Carlo simulation for the optimized field configuration is performed. In this second phase, the input data are modelled through statistic distributions, and the obtained result is a probabilistic distribution of the production increase. The third step is a detailed analysis of the system constraints to evaluate the behaviour of the optimized configuration. In addition, a methodology to choose an alternative setting of the production field, that allows to increase the system reliability, is presented. The integrated workflow has been applied on a case study. The results obtained show that is extremely important to identify and quantify the uncertainties involved in a hydrocarbon production system for the evaluation of its potential production, and to verify the compliance with its constraints. Applying a configuration when a high degree of uncertainty is present may be hazardous and unsafe. The proposed workflow is an important tool to evaluate the field potential under uncertainties, optimize production, improve operations and system reliability, and support the decision-making process. Introduction Oil and gas production optimization is a field of extreme importance, since oil demand is continuously increasing, and many reservoirs currently in production are experiencing a decrease in production rates. The high number of processes involved and the synergy between them make the optimization of hydrocarbon fields a very complex task. It is therefore of primary importance to manage the challenges associated with an integrated production system, comprising the reservoir and the wells, the gathering system, and the process plant. In order to holistically optimise the production system the proposed integrated approach aims to combine subsurface models, surface production and engineering models in a single asset management tool.
