Abstract

Nanofluids are mostly dispersed in a base fuel to advance thermo-physical properties, creating them a noticeable prime for implementation in a variety of viable exertion such as medical engineering, transportation, biotechnology, and so on. The scientific community has been focusing on improving combustion behavior, constancy features, several engine functioning metrics, and emission features of traditional diesel engines employing nanoparticle-based fuel blends due to advances in nanotechnology. There have recently been a few research endeavors in the literature by nano-sized organic, non-metallic, metallic, and assorted particles in the conventional fuel for diesel engines. Due to the extreme multi-fold improvement in physical and chemical characteristics of customized energy, like great aspect ratio, an elevated reactive platform for combustion, improved heat and mass transport characteristics due to increased mechanical properties like enhancements in fire point, flash point, pour point, and other properties based on the type of nanoparticles, the obtained results are inspiring. Despite having all its advantages, the literature has some ambiguous and inconsistent data, and the experimental results of diverse investigators have not been comprehensive to the point where a shared agreement on this novel methodology to fuel reform can be reached. An effort was made to summarize a critical scientific paper on the combustion and consistency aspects of nanoparticle-filled fuels and their blends, and also their impacts on fuel and engine overall attributes, to pave the way for more research in this domain to maximize the prospective of nanoparticle-based fuels.

Abstract

International Conference on Computational Intelligence and Energy Advancements (ICCIEA-2021) is a prestigious event organized with a motivation to provide an excellent platform for the academicians, researchers, engineers, industrial participants and budding students around the world to share their research findings with the global experts. The conference aimed to provide researchers and attendees with prospects for global collaboration and networking among universities and corporate organizations for promoting research. ICCIEA-2021 was conducted in virtual format owing to the pandemic situation during 11th to 12th September 2021. It involved all classes of academia having research orientation. The conference was organized jointly by departments of ECE and ME, Vaagdevi College of Engineering and King Abdulaziz University, Rabigh, Saudi Arabia. As it was an event conducted in cyber form, the presentations were delivered using an online platform. Five different and parallel technical sessions were scheduled based upon the tracks of the articles and a Best Paper was awarded in each session. A total of 38 articles were selected for presentation after double blind peer review process. This proceeding issue compiles oral presentations that were presented by the authors and rigorously reviewed by a special committee designated by the editor team of the conference. The organizing and editorial committee of the ICCIEA-2021 hopes you enjoy reading the articles published in this volume of the JPCS. Besides, we wish to thank all the authors and participants for providing their valuable contributions for this proceeding as well as the reviewers for their constructive recommendations and criticism aiding to improve the presented articles. Abstract

Aims: Mobile Airways Sentinel NetworK (MASK) belongs to the Fondation Partenariale MACVIA-LR of Montpellier, France and aims to provide an active and healthy life to rhinitis sufferers and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the life cycle, whatever their gender or socio-economic status, in order to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease and to improve the digital transformation of health and care. The ultimate goal is to change the management strategy in chronic diseases. Methods: MASK implements ICT technologies for individualized and predictive medicine to develop novel care pathways by a multi-disciplinary group centred around the patients. Stakeholders: Include patients, health care professionals (pharmacists and physicians), authorities, patient's associations, private and public sectors. Results: MASK is deployed in 23 countries and 17 languages. 26,000 users have registered. EU grants (2018): MASK is participating in EU projects (POLLAR: impact of air POLLution in Asthma and Rhinitis, EIT Health, DigitalHealthEurope, Euriphi and Vigour). Lessons learnt: (i) Adherence to treatment is the major problem of allergic disease, (ii) Self-management strategies should be considerably expanded (behavioural), (iii) Change management is essential in allergic diseases, (iv) Education strategies should be reconsidered using a patient-centred approach and (v) Lessons learnt for allergic diseases can be expanded to chronic diseases. © 2019 The Author(s).

Abstract

mHealth, such as apps running on consumer smart devices is becoming increasingly popular and has the potential to profoundly affect healthcare and health outcomes. However, it may be disruptive and results achieved are not always reaching the goals. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline using the best evidence-based approach to care pathways suited to real-life using mobile technology in allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. Patients largely use over-the-counter medications dispensed in pharmacies. Shared decision making centered around the patient and based on self-management should be the norm. Mobile Airways Sentinel networK (MASK), the Phase 3 ARIA initiative, is based on the freely available MASK app (the Allergy Diary, Android and iOS platforms). MASK is available in 16 languages and deployed in 23 countries. The present paper provides an overview of the methods used in MASK and the key results obtained to date. These include a novel phenotypic characterization of the patients, confirmation of the impact of allergic rhinitis on work productivity and treatment patterns in real life. Most patients appear to self-medicate, are often non-adherent and do not follow guidelines. Moreover, the Allergy Diary is able to distinguish between AR medications. The potential usefulness of MASK will be further explored by POLLAR (Impact of Air Pollution on Asthma and Rhinitis), a new Horizon 2020 project using the Allergy Diary. © 2018 The Author(s).

Abstract

Wood is one of the oldest materials that has always been known as a construction material. Despite its widespread application and unique properties, it has weaknesses such as relatively brittle behavior, especially in bending. In order to improve its performance and boost its features or strengthen wooden structural members, one solution is to employ FRP component, which is widely used as a rehabilitation tool. The lightness and ease of application for different materials such as concrete, wood, and steel have made it possible to increase the strength and ductility of structural elements. In this study, the few models that were available for the wood-FRP system were collected, and the uncertainty of six variables, as the most effective parameters in the strength of this system, was selected for reliability analysis. Also, during the steps, three live to dead load ratios equal to 0.75, 1, and 1.25 were assumed as the design loads. What was achieved during this research was that during the design process of wood-FRP, uncertainties had a significant impact on the reliability of existing models. Some models could be reliable enough to be applied for design purposes; however, uncertainties seriously affect the reliability of some models. Accordingly, the average reliability index of all six available models decreased from 4.88 in case one fails to consider uncertainties to 2.71 with uncertainties of the models. Among the five existing models presented in previous studies, the Palizi and Toufigh model with an average reliability index of 3.61 was the best-proposed model, which is in good agreement with the acceptable index of existing structural design criteria. It is worth noting that various variables affect the reliability of this system. However, in this study, only the uncertainty of the six variables of modulus of elasticity, thickness, length, and width of FRP, along with wood width and its compressive strength, was considered. Other sources of uncertainties may be considered while analyzing this system in future studies.

Abstract

Abstract The World Health Organisation (WHO) presents an upper limit for lead in drinking water of 10 parts per billion ppb. Typically, to reach this level of sensitivity, expensive metrology is required. To increase the sensitivity range of low-cost devices, this paper explores the prospects of using a volume reduction technique of a boiled water sample doped with Lead-210 ( $${}^{210}$$ 210 Pb), as a means to increase the solute’s concentration. $${}^{210}$$ 210 Pb is a radioactive lead isotope and its concentration in a water sample can be measured with e.g. High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors at the Boulby Underground Germanium Suite. Concentrations close to the WHO limit have not been examined. This paper presents a measurement of the volume reduction technique retaining $$99\pm (9)$$ 99 ± ( 9 ) % of $${}^{210}$$ 210 Pb starting from a concentration of $$1.9 \times 10^{-6}$$ 1.9 × 10 - 6 ppb before reduction and resulting in $$2.63 \times 10^{-4}$$ 2.63 × 10 - 4 ppb after reduction. This work also applies the volume reduction technique to London tap water and reports the radioassay results from gamma counting in HPGe detectors. Among other radio-isotopes, $${}^{40}$$ 40 K, $${}^{210}$$ 210 Pb, $${}^{131}$$ 131 I and $${}^{177}$$ 177 Lu were identified at measured concentrations of $$2.83 \times 10^{3}$$ 2.83 × 10 3 ppb, $$2.55 \times 10^{-7}$$ 2.55 × 10 - 7 ppb, $$5.06 \times 10^{-10}$$ 5.06 × 10 - 10 ppb and $$5.84 \times 10^{-10}$$ 5.84 × 10 - 10 ppb in the London tap water sample. This technique retained $${90 \pm 50}{\%}$$ 90 ± 50 % of $${}^{40}$$ 40 K. Stable lead was inferred from the same water sample at a measured concentration of 0.012 ppb, prior to reduction.

11. Social and Historical Problematiaque in the Soviet Archaeology in the 1940’s – 1960’s: from the Main Goals to Practical Realization

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the main aim of the Soviet archaeology, which was also its feature – to study social development of ancient societies basing on archaeological sources. It was stated at the beginning of 1930s and after the WW2 a list of actual tasks was specified. In the late 1940’s – the early 1970’s they included studying of regularities and features of ancient (from primitive to feudal) societies development, reconstruction of concrete history of folks from the USSR territory, which had no written language, researches on handicrafts, swap and trade, studies of the mediaeval village history, examination of primitive society ideology, improvement of the typological method and archaeological theory, preparation of fundamental publications. All these tasks were practically realized in work of archaeological research institutions during above mentioned period, in particular, research fellows of central and republican archaeological research establishments worked on topics related to study of social and historical problems of ancient societies basing on archaeological data. As well these problems were discussed at methodological workshops of the Institute of archaeology AS USSR and its Leningrad branch, at All-Union meetings and conferences. Soviet archaeologists completed resumptive archaeological publications with historical conclusions and chapters or even separate volumes of fundamental books dedicated to history of particular folks, regions or periods in the 1950’s – the early 1970’s. This work on social and historical problematique determined Soviet archaeologists’ requirement for methodology development which was a cause of appearance of a new subdiscipline. The Soviet theoretical archaeology institutionalized in the early 1970s.

Abstract

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second change management strategy is proposed by ARIA Phase 4 to increase self-medication and shared decision making in rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity. An innovation of ARIA has been the development and validation of information technology evidence-based tools (Mobile Airways Sentinel Network [MASK]) that can inform patient decisions on the basis of a self-care plan proposed by the health care professional. © 2018 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

15. Modeling of very low frequency (VLF) radio wave signal profile due to solar flares using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation coupled with ionospheric chemistry

Abstract

X-ray photons emitted during solar flares cause ionization in the lower ionosphere (~60 to 100 km) in excess of what is expected to occur due to a quiet sun. Very low frequency (VLF) radio wave signals reflected from the D-region of the ionosphere are affected by this excess ionization. In this paper, we reproduce the deviation in VLF signal strength during solar flares by numerical modeling. We use GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation code to compute the rate of ionization due to a M-class flare and a X-class flare. The output of the simulation is then used in a simplified ionospheric chemistry model to calculate the time variation of electron density at different altitudes in the D-region of the ionosphere. The resulting electron density variation profile is then self-consistently used in the LWPC code to obtain the time variation of the change in VLF signal. We did the modeling of the VLF signal along the NWC (Australia) to IERC/ICSP (India) propagation path and compared the results with observations. The agreement is found to be very satisfactory.

Abstract

Whether a house of worship or a simple farmhouse, the fabrication of a building reveals both the unspoken cultural aspirations of the builder and the inevitable exigencies of the construction process. In other-words, why buildings are made is intimately and inevitably associated with how buildings are made. Nowhere is this more evident than in vernacular architecture. At the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) we are concerned that the de-population of Canada's rural areas, paucity of specialized tradespersons, and increasing complexity of building codes threaten the sustainability of this invaluable cultural resource. For current and future generations, the quantitative and qualitative values of traditional methods of construction are essential for an inclusive cultural memory. More practically, and equally pressing, an operational knowledge of these technologies is essential for the conservation of our built heritage. To address these concerns, CIMS has launched a number of research initiatives over the past five years that explore novel protocols for the documentation and dissemination of knowledge related to traditional methods of construction. Our current project, Cultural Diversity and Material Imagination in Canadian Architecture (CDMICA), made possible through funding from Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), explores the potential of building information modelling (BIM) within the context of a web-based environment. In this paper, we discuss our work-to-date on the development of a web-based library of BIM details that is referenced to ''typical'' assemblies culled from 19C and early 20C construction manuals. The parametric potential of these ''typical'' details is further refined by evidence from the documentation of ''specific'' details studied during comprehensive surveys of extant heritage buildings. Here, we consider a BIM of the roof truss assembly of one of the oldest buildings in Canada's national capital – the Commissariat Building and current home to the Bytown Museum – as a case study within the CDMICA project.

18. Grain quality and yield of spring barley in field trials under variable growing conditions

Abstract

Effects of the year, previous crop and control of leaf diseases on grain yield, test weight, protein and starch content, Fusarium head blight (FHB) and deoxynivalenol (DON) content in grain were investigated in four spring barley varieties. The trials were set up in 2001-2004 at Kroměříž (235 m above sea level, average annual temperature 8.7°C, annual precipitation sum 599 mm) in a five-course crop rotation, where spring barley followed the previous crops sugar beet, winter wheat, maize, and oilseed rape. The experimental years differed a lot in temperature and precipitation. The years 2001 and 2002 were dry and warm and grain yield was much lower as compared to that in the following years even though the other growing conditions were identical. The most stable quality parameters were obtained after the previous crop sugar beet. The average value of test weight was 661 g/l(ranging from 629 to 685 g/l), protein content 11.2% (10.3-11.7%) and starch content 61.5% (58.9-64.9%). Grain yield averaged 6.67 t/ha. Test weight after maize was on average 658 g/l(619-692 g/l), protein content 11.5% (10.1-12.4%), starch content 60.7% (59.2-63.8%), and grain yield 6.24 t/ha. Test weight and starch content were lower and protein content higher after oilseed rape and winter wheat. A higher FHB incidence and DON content were found after the previous crop maize. In 2001 and 2002 with strong water deficit during the growing seasons, more grains infected by Fusarium spp. were detected and DON content was higher too. The increase was due to a short rainy period at heading of spring barley. Problems of variable conditions for growing malting varieties of spring barley and current possibilities of producing both good grain yields and quality are discussed.

Abstract

Styrene is a nonpolar organic compound used in very high volume for the industrial scale production of commercially important polymers such as polystyrene resins as well as copolymers like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, latex, and rubber. These resins are widely used in the manufacturing of various products including single-use plastics such as disposable cups and containers, protective packaging, heat insulation, and so forth. The large-scale utilization leads to the over-accumulation of styrene waste in the environment causing deleterious health risks including cancer, neurological impairment, dysbiosis of central nervous system, and respiratory problems. To eliminate the accumulating waste. Microbial enzyme-based system represents the most environmental friendly and sustainable approach for elimination of styrene waste. However, comprehensive understanding of the enzyme-substrate interaction and associated pathways would be crucial for developing large-scale disposal systems. This study aims to understand the molecular interaction between the protein-ligand complexes of the styrene catabolic reactions by bacterial enzymes of sty operon. Molecular docking analysis for catalytic enzymes namely, styrene monooxygenase (SMO), styrene oxide isomerase (SOI), and phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase (PAD) of the bacterial sty operon was carried out with their individual substrates, that is, styrene, styrene oxide, and phenylacetic acid, respectively. The binding energy, amino acids forming binding cavity, and binding interactions between the protein-ligand binding sites were calculated for each case. The obtained binding energies showed a stable association of these complexes indicating the future scope of their utilization for large-scale bioremediation of styrene, and its commercially used polymers and copolymers., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

20. Natrialba swarupiae sp. nov., a halophilic archaeon isolated from a hypersaline lake in India.

Abstract

A haloarchaeal strain (ESP3B_9 T ) was isolated from the salt pan of Sambhar salt lake, Rajasthan, India. Cells were coccoid, non-motile, Gram-stain-negative and formed reddish-pink pigmented colonies. The strain was aerobic, able to grow at 35-55 °C (optimum, 40 °C), in 20-35 % (25 %) NaCl and pH 8-10 (pH 9). Mg 2+ not required for growth. The cells were lysed in distilled water and the minimum NaCl concentration that prevented cell lysis was 5 % w/v. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain ESP3B_9 T and Natrialba hulunbeirensis JCM 10989 T and Natrialba magadii ATCC 43099 T were 96.53 and 96.25 % respectively. The similarities of the RNA polymerase subunit B gene between strain ESP3B_9 T and N. hulunbeirensis JCM 10989 T and N. magadii ATCC 43099 T were 84.47 and 84.9 % respectively. Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 4.20 Mbp with DNA G+C content of 62.5 mol%. The major polar lipids were phosphotidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl esters with minor amounts of unidentified lipids. The results of polyphasic analysis determined that strain ESP3B_9 T represents a novel species of the genus Natrialba , for which the name Natrialba swarupiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ESP3B_9 T (MCC 3419 T =JCM 33002 T =KCTC 4279 T =CGMCC 1.16737 T ).
