Abstract The main causes of frequency instability or oscillations in islanded microgrids are unstable load and varying power output from distributed generating units (DGUs). An important challenge for islanded microgrid systems powered by renewable energy is maintaining frequency stability. To address this issue, a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is designed in this article. Firstly, islanded microgrid model is constructed by incorporating various DGUs and flywheel energy storage system (FESS). Further, considering first order transfer function of FESS and DGUs, a linearized transfer function is obtained. This transfer function is further approximated into first order plus time delay (FOPTD) form to design PID control strategy, which is efficient and easy to analyze. PID parameters are evaluated using the Chien-Hrones-Reswick (CHR) method for set point tracking and load disturbance rejection for 0% and 20% overshoot. The CHR method for load disturbance rejection for 20% overshoot emerges as the preferred choice over other discussed tuning methods. The effectiveness of the discussed method is demonstrated through frequency analysis and transient responses and also validated through real time simulations. Moreover, tabulated data presenting tuning parameters, time domain specifications and comparative frequency plots, support the validity of the proposed tuning method for PID control design of the presented islanded model.

Conventional farming (CF) has significantly increased the aggregate supply of food grains and ensured food security for the growing population in India. However, it proved environmentally unsustainable due to its higher reliance on chemical inputs. Organic farming (OF) becomes an alternative approach that ensures the sustainability of the agricultural system. But, the transition from CF to OF can be a lengthy process, and farmers may experience income loss during its course. Farmers will switch only when they are convinced that the long-term benefits of OF are higher than those of CF. Therefore, a study on cost and return analysis can help policymakers take appropriate measures to promote the adoption of OF. The current study aims to examine the costs, returns, and profitability for three crops (sugarcane, wheat, and paddy) under OF and CF, using data collected through a primary survey of 600 farmers (300 organics and 300 conventional) for the crop year 2020-21 in two districts of the Ganga River Basin. The study finds OF less profitable than CF for all three crops. Further, the results of crop-wise economics of OF and CF show that sugarcane is the most profitable crop and paddy is the least remunerative crop among all the three crops in the study area under both farming systems. The findings suggest that the policy focus must be on raising productivity through reorientating R&D and extension services, establishing strong marketing networks, and institutionalizing the system of payments for ecosystem services for organic farmers.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a comprehensive approach to managing diseases, focusing on combining various strategies to reduce pathogen populations effectively and in an environmentally conscious way. We investigated the effects of IPM on beneficial microbial populations and its relationship with pathogen populations in both direct-seeded rice (DSR) and transplanted rice (TR) systems. This study demonstrates that IPM practices have significantly higher populations of beneficial microbes, such as Trichoderma harzianum and Pseudomonas fluorescens, and lower level of the pathogen Fusarium verticillioides compared to non-IPM (farmer practices). The average mean population of T. harzianum was 6.38 × 103 CFU/g in IPM compared to 3.22 × 103 CFU/g in non-IPM during 2019 in TR at Bambawad. P. fluorescens mean population in 2019 was significantly higher in IPM (4.67 × 103 CFU/g) than in non-IPM (3.82 × 103 CFU/g) at the Karnal location in DSR. The F. verticillioides populations were significantly lower in IPM fields (9.46 × 103 CFU/g) compared to non-IPM fields (11.48 × 103 CFU/g) during 2017 at Haridwar in TR. Over three years, a significant increase in the populations of beneficial microbes in IPM plots was observed in all three locations of both TR and DSR, highlighting the sustainable impact of IPM practices. Disease dynamics analysis revealed that IPM effectively managed key diseases in both DSR and TR systems, with significant correlations between microbial density and disease severity. A significant positive correlation was recorded between F. verticillioides population and bakanae incidence at all three locations. Sheath blight incidence was negatively correlated with P. fluorescens population in both TR and DSR. In DSR, bacterial blight and brown spot diseases are reduced with the increased population of T. harzianum. Bioagents T. harzianum and P. fluorescens reduced disease incidence, underscoring the role of beneficial microbes in disease suppression and their importance for sustainable production using IPM practices.

While previous studies have focused on the technical aspects of groundwater extraction and optimal cropping patterns, there is a notable lack of research on the socio-economic factors affecting groundwater access and agricultural productivity, especially at a micro-level in Punjab, India. This study, therefore, investigates the water use efficiency (WUE) and economic water productivity (EWP) of paddy and wheat crops across diverse farm sizes and districts in Punjab, offering critical insights into agricultural water management. The study is based on primary data from Punjab, India, with Sangrur, Jalandhar, Pathankot, and Bathinda districts selected for groundwater profile analysis via multistage random sampling of 246 farmers. Notably, Punjab exhibits high EWP for wheat, surpassing the national average. However, disparities exist across districts, emphasizing the importance of localized interventions. Larger farms consistently demonstrate higher WUE and EWP, underlining the significance of scale in optimizing water inputs. Factors such as farm size, crop variety, and regional variations significantly influence WUE and EWP. Tailored approaches for marginal farmers and districts with lower efficiency are crucial for promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The findings underscore the need for targeted policy interventions to enhance water use efficiency and productivity in Punjab’s agriculture sector.

This article presents the experimental outcomes of the shear strength and microstructural characteristics of high-volume fly ash self-compacting concrete (HVFYA-SCC) containing recycled concrete aggregates and coal bottom ash as partial replacements for natural coarse aggregates and natural fine aggregates. A total of ten numbers of mixes were produced, including HVFYA-SCC made without recycled concrete aggregates and coal bottom ash (as control) along with HVFYA-SCC mixes made with recycled concrete aggregates (from 25% to 50%) and coal bottom ash (from 10% to 30%). The compressive and shear strength of the HVFYA-SCC mixes were improved by 7% and 4%, respectively, with the incorporation of 20% coal bottom ash and 25% recycled concrete aggregates after 120 days of curing. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed that incorporating coal bottom ash exhibited the pozzolanic reactions with fly ash densified the binder-aggregate matrix of the resulting HVFYA-SCC.

Sugarcane productivity is being hampered globally under changing environmental scenarios like drought and salinity. The highly complex nature of the plant responses against these stresses is determined by a variety of factors such as genotype, developmental phase of the plant, progression rate and stress, intensity, and duration. These factors influence plant responses and can determine whether mitigation approaches associated with acclimation are implemented. In this review, we attempt to summarize the effects of drought and salinity on sugarcane growth, specifically on the plant’s responses at various levels, viz., physiological, biochemical, and metabolic responses, to these stresses. Furthermore, mitigation strategies for dealing with these stresses have been discussed. Despite sugarcane’s complex genomes, conventional breeding approaches can be utilized in conjunction with molecular breeding and omics technologies to develop drought- and salinity-tolerant cultivars. The significant role of plant growth-promoting bacteria in sustaining sugarcane productivity under drought and salinity cannot be overlooked.

The research aims to examine the unexpected changes in stock prices due to external shocks given to the macroeconomic variables to forecast future stock market returns. The study applies two econometric models such as «Variance Decomposition» (VDC) and «Impulse Response Function» (IRF) for examining the exogenous shocks in macroeconomic variables respond to changes in stock prices. Monthly time series data of five significant macroeconomic variables Real Exchange Rate, Interest Rate, Consumer Price Index (CPI), Crude Oil Prices, and Trade Openness, taken as independent variables and BSE SENSEX as a dependent variable. The research period is from Jan 2009 to Dec 2019. The study has taken the responsibility to reveal a few strong evidences for changes in stock prices due to exogenous shocks in Exchange Rate, Trade Openness, Inflation, and Interest rate along with crude oil prices. According to the results, changes in the stock market are due to external factors like changes in dividend policy or capital loss, and some changes in the stock market are due to its own innovative shocks. This study suggests to reduce unexpected changes in stock prices frequently, companies should control capital loss and focus on stable return/dividend policies. There are divergent views in the literature review in the context of measures of these variables, however no research has been done on exogenous shocks in macroeconomic variables to BSE SENSEX for the Indian stock market with this particular data set and duration.

In this paper, we have studied the effect of doping of ZnO and MgO nanoparticles (NPs) in 4-(trans-4-n-hexylcyclo-hexyl) isothiocyanatobenzoate. A thorough comparison of dielectric properties, optoelectronic properties, and calorimetric phase transition properties has been done for MgO and ZnO NP doped LC. We prepare their homogenous mixture of MgO and ZnO NPs in toluene and transfer into cells made of glass and Indium Tin-Oxide (ITO) coated glass. The observed microstructures in the hybrid system can be classified into three main categories: grain like structures formed by aggregation of smaller size MgO nanoparticles while liquid crystal molecules anchor over the surfaces of nanoparticles, the grtu grain-like structures further integrate to form inorganic polymeric type of honeycomb-like mesostructures in presence of glass surface, and flower-like clusters of MgO nanoparticles on ITO surface. The smaller size nanoparticles can maintain the energy balance by allowing the anchoring of liquid crystal molecules over their surfaces whereas the larger size nanoparticles cannot compromise or maintain the energy balance with the liquid crystal molecules and are separated out to nucleate and form bigger size nanoaggregate or clusters. The energy preference of the substrate and nanoparticle’s surface to liquid crystal molecules plays an important role in the formation of different types of hierarchical nano- and microstructures. We account the reasons for the formation of nano and micro scale hierarchical structures on the basis of the competition between the forces: NP-NP, LC-LC, NP-LC, Glass/ITO-NP, and Glass/ITO-LC interactions. We observed a considerable change in the dielectric properties, transition temperature, bandgap, and other parameters of LC molecules when MgO NPs are doped, but a minor change occurs when ZnO NPs are doped in LC. Optical microscopy, FTIR, Raman, IR, HR-XRD and FESEM-EDX characterization data confirm and validate our guiding conceptions.

Abstract Older adults are the most vulnerable group in the labor market, given their physical and functional health risks. Moreover, they are also at a greater risk of psychological factors like work stress due to risk of age, ageism and social well-being. Given these challenges and the growing proportion of older adults in the developing world, this paper studies the theoretical connotation between work stress and health related wellbeing outcomes among working elderly in India. Using BKPAI survey this study adopts multiple modeling approach (descriptive analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and a logit regression model) to test the association between work stress and wellbeing and understand this theoretical connotation in elderly labor market. Our results confirm that work stress is found to be significantly associated with socio-economic and health risks like income, gender, education, morbidity, disability, and socio-psychological barriers among working older adults. Females are likely to have more risk for work stress [OR, 1.72; (95% CI 2.89–2.91)] than males. Similarly, more affluent groups (wealthiest) are less likely to have any work stress [OR, 0.38; (95% CI-0.25–0.58)]. Older adults with multi-morbidity are at greater odds of having work stress [OR 2.26; (95% CI-1.74–2.94)]. Work stress is a common issue that enhances at higher ages due to the work, health, and socio-economic vulnerability of older adults. The study finds a significant impact of these factors on work stress and therefore argues for a comprehensive policy approach to address the psychological health risk of the working older adults in the labor market.

Abstract Pearl millet is an important staple food crop of poor people and excels all other cereals due to its unique features of resilience to adverse climatic conditions. It is rich in micronutrients like iron and zinc and amenable for focused breeding for these micronutrients along with high yield. Hence, this is a key to alleviate malnutrition and ensure nutritional security. This study was conducted to identify and validate candidate genes governing grain iron and zinc content enabling the desired modifications in the genotypes. Transcriptome sequencing using ION S5 Next Generation Sequencer generated 43.5 million sequence reads resulting in 83,721 transcripts with N50 of 597 bp and 84.35% of transcripts matched with the pearl millet genome assembly. The genotypes having high iron and zinc showed differential gene expression during different stages. Of which, 155 were up-regulated and 251 were down-regulated while during flowering stage and milking stage 349 and 378 transcripts were differentially expressed, respectively. Gene annotation and GO term showed the presence of transcripts involved in metabolic activities associated with uptake and transport of iron and zinc. Information generated will help in gaining insights into iron and zinc metabolism and develop genotypes with high yield, grain iron and zinc content.

Iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiency has been identified as a major food-related health issue, affecting two billion people globally. Efforts to enhance the Fe and Zn content in food grains through plant breeding are an economic and sustainable solution to combat micronutrient deficiency in resource-poor populace of Asia and Africa. Pearl millet, Cenchrus americanus (L). Morrone, considered as a hardy nutri-cereal, is the major food crop for millions of people of these nations. As an effort to enhance its grain mineral content, an investigation was conducted using line × tester analysis to generate information on the extent of heterosis, gene action, combining ability for grain yield potential, and grain mineral nutrients (Fe and Zn). The partitioning of variance attributable to parents indicated that the lines and testers differed significantly for the traits studied. For most of the attributes, hybrids that were superior to the parents in the desired direction in terms of per se performance were identified. The analysis of combining ability variance indicated the preponderance of both additive and non-additive genetic effects. Thus, reciprocal recurrent selection can be used to develop a population with high–grain Fe and Zn contents. The Fe and Zn content in grain exhibited a highly significant and positive association between them, whereas the Fe and Zn contents individually showed a negative, albeit weak, correlation with grain yield and a moderate positive relation with grain weight. This indicates that mineral nutrient contents in grains can be improved without significant compromise on yield. The consistency of these trends across the environment suggests that these findings could be directly used as guiding principles for the genetic enhancement of Fe and Zn grain content in pearl millet.

Abstract Understanding the species richness and β-diversity patterns along elevation gradients can aid in formulating effective conservation strategies particularly in areas where local anthropogenic stresses and climate change are quite significant as in the Himalaya. Thus, we studied macrolichen richness and β-diversity along elevational gradients at three sites, namely Kashmir (2200 to 3800 m a.m.s.l), Uttarakhand (2000–3700 m a.m.s.l) and Sikkim (1700 to 4000 m a.m.s.l) which cover much of the Indian Himalayan Arc. In all, 245 macrolichen species belonging to 77 genera and 26 families were collected from the three sites. Only 11 species, 20 genera and 11 families were common among the three transects. Despite the differences in species composition, the dominant functional groups in the three sites were the same: foliose, fruticose and corticolous forms. The hump-shaped elevation pattern in species richness was exhibited by most of the lichen groups, though an inverse hump-shaped pattern was also observed in certain cases. β-diversity (βsor) based on all pairs of comparisons along an elevation gradient varied from 0.48 to 0.58 in Kashmir, 0.03 to 0.63 in Uttarakhand and 0.46 to 0.77 in Sikkim. The contribution of turnover to β-diversity was more than nestedness at all the three transects. Along elevation β-diversity and its components of turnover and nestedness varied significantly with elevation. While species turnover increased significantly along the elevation in all the three transects, nestedness decreased significantly in Kashmir and Sikkim transects but increased significantly in the Uttarakhand transect. Except for the Kashmir Himalayan elevation transect, stepwise β-diversity and its components of turnover and nestedness did not vary significantly with elevation. The present study, the first of its kind in the Himalayan region, clearly brings out that macrolichen species richness, β-diversity, and its components of turnover and nestedness vary along the elevation gradients across the Himalayan Arc. It also highlights that contribution of turnover to β-diversity is higher in comparison to nestedness at all the three transects. The variations in species richness and diversity along elevation gradients underpin the importance of considering elevational gradients in planning conservation strategies.

The electrical energy generated from solar energy photovoltaic (PV) technology is intermittent, varying, and irregular. With PV technology’s limited energy conversion efficiency, it is imperative to extract the maximum of converted energy. The zero slopes of the power versus voltage curve are utilized to determine the maximum power point. Conventional algorithms provide lower convergence time along with low power oscillations. This paper proposes an adaptive perturb and observe (A-P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique for the energy conversion system. The primary objectives of the proposed technique are to obtain a more robust, better tracking capability, improved efficiency, and fast response lesser oscillations under steady-state with a simple structure to implement. Maximum power point (MPP) tracking under varying meteorological conditions and load variations is still a challenge. The proposed P&O technique has been tested under realistic meteorological variations and load variations. The comparative evaluation of the proposed adaptive-step size A-P&O MPPT technique and other conventional techniques such as perturb and observe (P&O), incremental conductance (IC), modified P&O and fuzzy logic control (FLC) have also been performed. The performance of the proposed control technique is evaluated using a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The obtained results confirm that the proposed control technique is superior in performance as compared to the other four conventional techniques.

Abstract Background Mental health disorders in the child and adolescent population are a pressing public health concern. Despite the high prevalence of psychopathology in this vulnerable population, the transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) has many obstacles such as deficiencies in planning, organisational readiness and policy gaps. All these factors contribute to an inadequate and suboptimal transition process. A suite of measures is required that would allow young people to be assessed in a structured and standardised way to determine the on-going need for care and to improve communication across clinicians at CAMHS and AMHS. This will have the potential to reduce the overall health economic burden and could also improve the quality of life for patients travelling across the transition boundary. The MILESTONE (Managing the Link and Strengthening Transition from Child to Adult Mental Health Care) project aims to address the significant socioeconomic and societal challenge related to the transition process. This protocol paper describes the development of two MILESTONE transition-related measures: The Transition Readiness and Appropriateness Measure (TRAM), designed to be a decision-making aide for clinicians, and the Transition Related Outcome Measure (TROM), for examining the outcome of transition. Methods The TRAM and TROM have been developed and were validated following the US FDA Guidance for Patient-reported Outcome Measures which follows an incremental stepwise framework. The study gathers information from service users, parents, families and mental health care professionals who have experience working with young people undergoing the transition process from eight European countries. Discussion There is an urgent need for comprehensive measures that can assess transition across the CAMHS/AMHS boundary. This study protocol describes the process of development of two new transition measures: the TRAM and TROM. The TRAM has the potential to nurture better transitions as the findings can be summarised and provided to clinicians as a clinician-decision making support tool for identifying cases who need to transition and the TROM can be used to examine the outcomes of the transition process. Abstract Background Living organisms are frequently exposed to more than one xenobiotic at a time either by ingestion of contaminated food/fodder or due to house-hold practices, occupational hazards or through environment. These xenobiotics interact individually or in combination with biological systems and act as carcinogen or produce other toxic effects including reproductive and degenerative diseases. Present study was aimed to investigate the cyto-genotoxic effects of flubendiamide and copper and ameliorative potential of certain natural phyotconstituent antioxidants. Method In vitro cytogenotoxic effects were evaluated by employing battery of assays including Propidium iodide staining, Tunel assay, Micronuclei, DNA fragmentation and Comet assay on isolated splenocytes and their prevention by resveratrol (5 and 10 μM), catechin (10 and 20 μM), curcumin (5 and 10 μM) and α-tocopherol (5, 10 and 20 μM). In vivo study was also undertaken daily oral administration of flubendiamide (200 mg/kg) or copper (33 mg/kg) and both these in combination, and also all these concurrently with of α-tocopherol to Wistar rats for 90 days. Results Flubendiamide and copper produced concentration-dependent cytotoxic effects on splenocytes and at median lethal concentrations, flubendiamide (40 μM) and copper (40 μM) respectively produced 71 and 81% nonviable cells, higher number of Tunel+ve apoptotic cells, 7.86 and 9.16% micronucleus and 22.90 and 29.59 comets/100 cells and DNA fragmentation. The insecticidal resistance of mosquitoes necessitates the development of a natural, safe, and plant-based method for vector control. Unfortunately, there are no effective vaccines or particular medications available to combat malaria; therefore, mosquitoes must be targeted directly. Previous studies have shown the health benefits of Datura stramonium, but its bioactive peptides or proteins are less explored. This is the first study on D. stramonium stem protein used for mosquito larval protein. The present study aimed to identify the purified mosquito larval protein from the crude extract of D. stramonium stem. Crude protein was isolated, precipitated, dialyzed, and purified by using ion-exchange chromatography, native PAGE, and HPLC. The highest larval mortality was observed at 5.5 mg/ml of crude protein concentration. Native PAGE was used for the analysis and purification of active proteins. The single homogeneous purified larvicidal protein appeared as a single band of 30 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The novel bioactive peptide was characterized by LC-MS/ESI-MS. The homology of the peptide was searched by the Mascot search engine. The database search revealed has not shown peptide similarity with D. stramonium protein, but homology with another plant Arabidopsis thaliana protein is probable for protein phosphatases. The lethal concentration of purified protein against 3rd instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi had LC50 and LC90 values of 25 μg/ml and 40 μg/ml. It has shown new insight into larvicidal activity and can be used as a new drug against malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

Once thought to be a minor disease, foliar blast disease of pearl millet, caused by Magnaporthe grisea, has recently emerged as an important biotic constraint for pearl millet production in India. The presence of a wider host range as well as high pathogenic heterogeneity complicates host–pathogen dynamics. Furthermore, environmental factors play a significant role in exacerbating the disease severity. An attempt was made to unravel the genotype-by-environment interactions for identification and validation of stable resistant genotypes against foliar blast disease through multi-environment testing. A diversity panel consisting of 250 accessions collected from over 20 different countries was screened under natural epiphytotic conditions in five environments. A total of 43 resistant genotypes were found to have high and stable resistance. Interestingly, most of the resistant lines were late maturing. Combined ANOVA of these 250 genotypes exhibited significant genotype-by-environment interaction and indicated the involvement of crossover interaction with a consistent genotypic response. This justifies the necessity of multi-year and multi-location testing. The first two principal components (PCs) accounted for 44.85 and 29.22% of the total variance in the environment-centered blast scoring results. Heritability-adjusted genotype plus genotype × environment interaction (HA-GGE) biplot aptly identified “IP 11353” and “IP 22423, IP 7910 and IP 7941” as “ideal” and “desirable” genotypes, respectively, having stable resistance and genetic buffering capacity against this disease. Bootstrapping at a 95% confidence interval validated the recommendations of genotypes. Therefore, these genotypes can be used in future resistance breeding programs in pearl millet. Mega-environment delineation and desirability index suggested Jaipur as the ideal environment for precise testing of material against the disease and will increase proper resource optimization in future breeding programs. Information obtained in current study will be further used for genome-wide association mapping of foliar blast disease in pearl millet.

Pearl millet is a climate-resilient, nutritious crop with low input requirements that could provide economic returns in marginal agro-ecologies. In this study, we report quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) content from three distinct production environments. We generated a genetic linkage map using 210 F6 recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the (PPMI 683 × PPMI 627) cross using genome-wide simple sequence repeats (SSRs). The molecular linkage map (seven linkage groups) of 151 loci was 3,273.1 cM length (Kosambi). The content of grain Fe in the RIL population ranged between 36 and 114 mg/Kg, and that of Zn from 20 to 106 mg/Kg across the 3 years (2014–2016) at over the three locations (Delhi, Dharwad, and Jodhpur). QTL analysis revealed a total of 22 QTLs for grain Fe and Zn, of which 14 were for Fe and eight were for Zn on three consecutive years at all locations. The observed phenotypic variance (R2) explained by different QTLs for grain Fe and Zn content ranged from 2.85 (QGFe.E3.2014–2016_Q3) to 19.66% (QGFe.E1.2014–2016_Q3) and from 2.93 (QGZn.E3.2014–2016_Q3) to 25. 95% (QGZn.E1.2014–2016_Q1), respectively. Two constitutive expressing QTLs for both Fe and Zn co-mapped in this population, one on LG 2 and second one on LG 3. Inside the QTLs candidate genes such as Ferritin gene, Al3+ Transporter, K+ Transporters, Zn2+ transporters and Mg2+ transporters were identified using bioinformatics approaches. The identified QTLs and candidate genes could be useful in pearl millet population improvement programs, seed, restorer parents, and marker-assisted selection programs.

The present investigation was aimed to study the general combining ability of eight aromatic genotypes of rice and specific combining ability of all possible crosses for grain yield and quality traits in 28 F1’s obtained by 8x8 on way Diallel mating design. The estimates of SCA variance were revealed greater than GCA variance for all the characters except days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, effective tillers/plant and kernel length after cooking. It showed that both the additive as well as non-additive genetic variance exhibited importance for expression of the characters studied. The Parents, Pusa -2517-2-51-1and Pusa Sugandh-5 studied were identified as best general combiner for both yield and quality traits for most of the characters. Crosses, Pusa-2517-2-51-1×Type-3 showed non additive effects for yield traits only. However, the cross Ranbir Basmati x Pusa Basmati-1 showed non additive effects for quality traits. Cross combination viz., Pusa Sugandh- 5 x Pusa Basmati-1, Ranbir Basmati x Kasturi Basmati, Kasturi Basmati × Pusa-2517-2-51-1 and Pusa Sugandh-3 x Type-3 showed non additive gene action for most of the yield as well as quality traits. For those traits which showed high performance were under the control of dominance and dominance × dominance gene effects, heterosis breeding would be most effective. Thus, present study aims to develop hybrids performing better for both yield as well as quality traits.

Abstract Background Puddled transplanted system of rice cultivation despite having several benefits, is a highly labor, water and energy intensive system. In the face of changing climatic conditions, a successful transition from puddled to dry direct seeded rice (DDSR) cultivation system looks must in future. Genome-wide association study was performed for traits including, roots and nutrient uptake (14 traits), plant-morphological (5 traits), lodging-resistance (4 traits) and yield and yield attributing traits (7 traits) with the aim to identify significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) for traits enhancing rice adaptability to dry direct-seeded rice (DDSR) system. Results Study identified a total of 37 highly significant MTAs for 20 traits. The false discovery rate (FDR) ranged from 0.264 to 3.69 × 10− 4, 0.0330 to 1.25 × 10− 4, and 0.0534 to 4.60 × 10− 6 in 2015WS, 2016DS and combined analysis, respectively. The percent phenotypic variance (PV) explained by SNPs ranged from 9 to 92%. Among the identified significant MTAs, 15 MTAs associated with the traits including nodal root, root hair length, root length density, stem and culm diameter, plant height and grain yield were reported to be located in the proximity of earlier identified candidate gene. The significant positive correlation of grain-yield with seedling establishment traits, root morphological and nutrient-uptake related traits and grain yield attributing traits pointing towards combining target traits to increase rice yield and adaptability under DDSR. Seven promising progenies with better root morphology, nutrient-uptake and higher grain yield were identified that can further be used in genomics assisted breeding for DDSR varietal development. Conclusions Once validated, the identified MTAs and the SNPs linked with trait of interest could be of direct use in genomic assisted breeding (GAB) to improve grain yield and adaptability of rice under DDSR.

Abstract Background Climate extremes such as drought and flood have become major constraints to the sustainable rice crop productivity in rainfed environments. Availability of suitable climate-resilient varieties could help farmers to reduce the grain yield losses resulting from the climatic extremities. The present study was undertaken with an aim to develop high-yielding drought and submergence tolerant rice varieties using marker assisted introgression of qDTY 1.1 , qDTY 2.1 , qDTY 3.1 and Sub1. Performance of near isogenic lines (NILs) developed in the background of Swarna was evaluated across 60 multi-locations trials (MLTs). The selected promising lines from MLTs were nominated and evaluated in national trials across 18 locations in India and 6 locations in Nepal. Results Grain yield advantage of the NILs with qDTY 1.1 + qDTY 2.1 + qDTY 3.1 + Sub1 and qDTY 2.1 + qDTY 3.1 + Sub1 ranged from 76 to 2479 kg ha− 1 and 396 to 2376 kg ha− 1 under non-stress (NS) respectively and 292 to 1118 kg ha− 1 and 284 to 2086 kg ha− 1 under reproductive drought stress (RS), respectively. Background recovery of 94%, 93% and 98% was observed for IR 96322–34-223-B-1-1-1-1, IR 96321–1447-651-B-1-1-2 and IR 94391–131–358-19-B-1-1-1 respectively on 6 K SNP Infinium chip. Conclusion The drought and submergence tolerant rice varieties with pyramided multiple QTLs can ensure 0.2 to 1.7 t ha− 1 under reproductive stage drought stress and 0.1 to 1.0 t ha− 1 under submergence conditions with no yield penalty under non-stress to farmers irrespective of occurrence of drought and/or flood in the same or different seasons.

Introduction: Undernutrition among tuberculosis (TB) patients is associated with adverse treatment outcomes and increases risk of mortality. The nutritional status of pulmonary TB patients attending Outpatient Department of Combined Hospital, Thakurganj, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Material and Methods: Two hundred recently diagnosed patients and those who were on intensive phase therapy were selected prospectively. A structured questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic, lifestyle, health, and dietary information of the selected TB patients. Clinical information was collected from medical records. Nutritional status was measured as body mass index (BMI) (weight and height) using standard techniques. Abstract Background Transition from distinct Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) is beset with multitude of problems affecting continuity of care for young people with mental health needs. Transition-related discontinuity of care is a major health, socioeconomic and societal challenge globally. The overall aim of the Managing the Link and Strengthening Transition from Child to Adult Mental Health Care in Europe (MILESTONE) project (2014–19) is to improve transition from CAMHS to AMHS in diverse healthcare settings across Europe. MILESTONE focuses on current service provision in Europe, new transition-related measures, long term outcomes of young people leaving CAMHS, improving transitional care through ‘managed transition’, ethics of transitioning and the training of health care professionals. Methods Data will be collected via systematic literature reviews, pan-European surveys, and focus groups with service providers, users and carers, and members of youth advocacy and mental health advocacy groups. A prospective cohort study will be conducted with a nested cluster randomised controlled trial in eight European Union (EU) countries (Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, UK) involving over 1000 CAMHS users, their carers, and clinicians. Discussion Improving transitional care can facilitate not only recovery but also mental health promotion and mental illness prevention for young people. MILESTONE will provide evidence of the organisational structures and processes influencing transition at the service interface across differing healthcare models in Europe and longitudinal outcomes for young people leaving CAMHS, solutions for improving transitional care in a cost-effective manner, training modules for clinicians, and commissioning and policy guidelines for service providers and policy makers. 3D city model is a digital representation of the Earth’s surface and it’s related objects such as building, tree, vegetation, and some manmade feature belonging to urban area. The demand of 3D city modeling is increasing rapidly for various engineering and non-engineering applications. Generally four main image based approaches were used for virtual 3D city models generation. In first approach, researchers were used Sketch based modeling, second method is Procedural grammar based modeling, third approach is Close range photogrammetry based modeling and fourth approach is mainly based on Computer Vision techniques. SketchUp, CityEngine, Photomodeler and Agisoft Photoscan are the main softwares to represent these approaches respectively. These softwares have different approaches & methods suitable for image based 3D city modeling. Literature study shows that till date, there is no complete such type of comparative study available to create complete 3D city model by using images. This paper gives a comparative assessment of these four image based 3D modeling approaches. This comparative study is mainly based on data acquisition methods, data processing techniques and output 3D model products. For this research work, study area is the campus of civil engineering department, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (India). This 3D campus acts as a prototype for city. This study also explains various governing parameters, factors and work experiences. This research work also gives a brief introduction, strengths and weakness of these four image based techniques. Some personal comment is also given as what can do or what can’t do from these softwares. At the last, this study shows; it concluded that, each and every software has some advantages and limitations. Choice of software depends on user requirements of 3D project. For normal visualization project, SketchUp software is a good option. For 3D documentation record, Photomodeler gives good result. For Large city reconstruction; CityEngine is a good product. Agisoft Photoscan software creates much better 3D model with good texture quality and automatic processing. So this image based comparative study is useful for 3D city user community. Thus this study will provide a good roadmap for geomatics user community to create photo-realistic virtual 3D city model by using image based techniques.

This paper examines factors influencing land use under specific types of crops (e.g., cereals, cash crops including vegetables, horticulture, etc.) as well as the land devoted to livestock activities (dairy, piggery, poultry/duckery, fishery, apiary, etc.) in the eastern and northeastern regions of India comparing the same with the national pattern. We utilize farm-level information collected in the 59th round of the National Sample Survey (January–December 2003). Using multivariate multinomial logistic regression models, we examine the adjusted effect of selected background factors on the diversified use of agricultural plots at the national level, and for the eastern and northeastern regions separately. The level of diversification was significantly different across level of urbanization, occupational status (as a surrogate variable for household income), educational level of household head, household or family size, farm size, soil type, status of land possession, and waterlogging even after adjusting for religious and social/caste status of the household. The northeastern region reported a higher level of farm diversification compared to the eastern region, while both these regions had lower farm diversification compared to the rest of India. The study results could be used to argue for better and more equitable provision of economic security in terms of credit supply, subsidies, etc., for farmers belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in eastern India, and for appropriate land development toward settled cultivation in the northeastern region to augment the agricultural diversification. Some of the prudent steps to boost agricultural diversification in the eastern and northeastern regions of India include enhancing awareness of government-sponsored advisory services, and providing economic security to landless farmers and small landholders.

Tufted Angiomas also known as angioblastomas /Angioblastoma of Nagakawa are rare vascular neoplasms localised to the skin and subcutaneous tissues with the upper trunk and neck being most common sites. They are mainly seen in children but a few cases in juveniles and adults have been reported. We hereby report this case, a 40-year-old male who presented with a right lower lid, painless, slowly progressive, firm swelling diagnosed as Tufted Angioma on histopathology and immunohistochemistry.

Abstract Measurements from the CMS experiment at the LHC of dihadron correlations for charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV are presented. The results are reported as a function of the particle transverse momenta (p T) and collision centrality over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ). The observed two-dimensional correlation structure in Δη and Δϕ is characterised by a narrow peak at (Δη,Δϕ)≈(0,0) from jet-like correlations and a long-range structure that persists up to at least |Δη|=4. An enhancement of the magnitude of the short-range jet peak is observed with increasing centrality, especially for particles of p T around 1–2 GeV/c. The long-range azimuthal dihadron correlations are extensively studied using a Fourier decomposition analysis. The extracted Fourier coefficients are found to factorise into a product of single-particle azimuthal anisotropies up to p T≈3–3.5 GeV/c for at least one particle from each pair, except for the second-order harmonics in the most central PbPb events. Various orders of the single-particle azimuthal anisotropy harmonics are extracted for associated particle p T of 1–3 GeV/c, as a function of the trigger particle p T up to 20 GeV/c and over the full centrality range.

Aim: The present study was designed to study antibiotic resistance profile of E. coli isolates from colibacillosis in layers in and around Pantnagar. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 isolates of E. coli were recovered from 35 cases of colibacillosis in layers during necropsy. Antibiogram was studied via disc diffusion method against 12 antibiotics. Results: Results showed multiple drug resistance in 52.63% E. coli isolates. Serotyping of these isolates revealed 10 'O' group serotypes, predominantly O80 and O84 accounting for 31.57%. O80, O110, O119 and O132 have previously been isolated from human suggesting its zoonotic importance. A high degree of resistance was seen against cephalexin (73.68%) whereas chloramphenicol was found to be maximally (100%) effective. Emergence of enhanced mechanism of resistance to a variety of frequently used antibiotics is an increasing public health problem. Conclusion: It can be concluded that animals and human are at potential risk of acquiring infection with multi drug resistant strain of E. coli. [Vet. World 2012; 5(7.000): 405-408]

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in a global scenario. In the present study, biochemical changes exerted upon Pentoxifylline (PTX) treatment had been appraised in human breast cancer cells using Raman spectroscopy. There are no clinically approved methods to monitor such therapeutic responses available. The spectral profiling is suggestive of changes in DNA, protein and lipid contents showing a linear relationship with drug dosage. Further, multivariate analysis using principal-component based linear-discriminant-analysis (PC-LDA) was employed for classifying the control and the PTX treated groups. These findings support the feasibility of Raman spectroscopy as an alternate/adjunct label-free, objective method for monitoring drug-induced modifications against breast cancer cells.

The present investigation was carried out to study different selection parameters for foliage yield and its important yield contributing traits in 29 strains of vegetable amaranth (A. tricolor). The data were recorded for plant height (cm), stem diameter (cm), branches/plant, leaves/plant, leaf size (cm2), and protein content (mg/100 mg) in each cutting separately. Foliage yield (kg) was recorded on plot basis comprising 4 cuttings. The highest foliage yield per plot was recorded for strain AV-38, followed by AV-23 and AV-31. In general, protein content was high in the 2nd cutting in all strains. The heritability estimates were in general high for all the characters in all the cuttings and ranged from 74.87% to 93.33%. Genetic advance was maximum for foliage yield (42.50%), followed by leaf size (31.02%) and stem diameter (21.13%). It was concluded that foliage yield could be increased substantially in vegetable amaranth through indirect selection based on the characters leaf size and stem diameter.

Several species of curculionid weevils such as Amerrhinus ynca Sahlberg, Cholus annulatus Linnaeus, C. martiniquensis Marshall, C. zonatus (Swederus), Diocalandra frumenti (Fabricius), Dynamis borassi Fabricius, Homalinotus coriaceus Gyllenhal, Metamasius hemipterus Linnaeus, Paramasius distortus (Gemminger & Horold), Rhabdoscelus obscurus (Boisduval), Rhinostomus barbirostris (Fabricius), R. afzelii (Gyllenhal), Rhynchophorus bilineatus (Montrouzier), R. cruentatus Fabricius, R. ferrugineus (Olivier), R. palmarum (Linnaeus) and R. phoenicis (Fabricius) are associated with palms. Some of these have become a major constraint in the successful cultivation of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.), date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis L.). R. ferrugineus is distributed in over 33 countries and attacks more than two dozen palm species. In the recent past, it has spread to Middle Eastern countries, Mediterranean region of Africa and southern Europe (Spain) causing tremendous economic losses. The yield of date palm has decreased from 10 to 0.7 tons/ha. Coconut palms in India are infested upto 6.9 per cent in Kerala and 11.65 per cent in Tamil Nadu. R. palmarum is a major pest of oil and coconut palms in the tropical Americas and, vectors the nematode, Bursaphelenchus cocophilus (Cobb) Baujard which causes red ring disease (RRD). Palm losses due to RRD are commonly between 0.1 to 15% which amounts to tens of millions dollars. The status of other species is briefed. The grubs of weevils that develop in the stems, bud, rachis of leaves and inflorescence of cultivated, ornamental or wild palms cause direct damage. Because of the cryptic habitat of the grubs, which act as tissue borer, the management becomes difficult.

In the present study, stress analysis of fiber reinforced thin composite shafts subjected to unbalance excitation and steady torque, is carried out. Shafts of uniform as well as variable wall thickness are considered. The shaft is modeled as a simply supported Timoshenko beam in which shear deformation, rotary inertia and gyroscopic effects have been included. Modified equivalent modulus beam theory has been adopted. Rayleigh-Ritz displacements are used for deriving the solution equations. Shafts with a uniform wall thickness, and with variable wall thickness in which the thickness is varied along the axial length of the shaft for three different cases of fiber angles have been studied. Axial variation of stresses is studied in detail. Results obtained indicate that the stresses in the variable wall thickness are smaller than the one with uniform wall thickness, even for the same weight of the shaft.

The Eel-loach Pangio pangia has never been reported from East India in the River Ganges. In August, 2011, we collected a total of 39 individuals of this species during fish diversity explorations in River Ganges at Narora. This is the first record for Uttar Pradesh (North India). We present additional diagnostic features and description for this species previously known only from very old descriptions generally based on preserved specimens. Additionally, a molecular signature of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region between 5,8S and 28S ribosomal RNA genes was sequenced and submitted to NCBI (Accession No. JQ619873). An outline of formulation based on a layerwise beam theory for unbalance response and stability analysis of a multi mass, multi bearing composite rotor mounted on fluid film bearings is presented. Disc gyroscopics and rotary inertia effects are accounted for. Material damping is also taken into account. The layerwise theory is compared with conventionally used equivalent modulus beam theory. Some interesting case studies are presented. The effect of various parameters on dynamic behavior and stability of a composite rotor is presented.

Cinnamomum tamala Nees & Eberm. is an important traditional medicinal plant, mentioned in various ancient literatures such as Ayurveda. Several of its medicinal properties have recently been proved. To characterize diversity in terms of metabolite profiles of Cinnamomum tamala Nees and Eberm genotypes, a newly emerging mass spectral ionization technique direct time in real time (DART) is very helpful. The DART ion source has been used to analyze an extremely wide range of phytochemicals present in leaves of Cinnamomum tamala. Ten genotypes were assessed for the presence of different phytochemicals. Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of mainly terpenes and phenols. These constituents vary in the different genotypes of Cinnamomum tamala. Principal component analysis has also been employed to analyze the DART data of these Cinnamomum genotypes. The result shows that the genotype of Cinnamomum tamala could be differentiated using DART MS data. The active components present in Cinnamomum tamala may be contributing significantly to high amount of antioxidant property of leaves and, in turn, conditional effects for diabetic patients.

Scientific validation of reflexology requires an in-depth and noninvasive evaluation of “reflexology/reflex areas” in health and disease. The present paper reports the differential properties of “normal” and “abnormal” reflexology areas related to the lumbar vertebrae in a subject suffering from low back pain. The pathology is supported by radiological evidence. The reflexology target regions were clinically assessed with respect to colour and tenderness in response to finger pressure. Grey scale luminosity and pain intensity, as assessed by visual analogue scale scores, differentiated “normal” from “abnormal” skin. Skin swept source-optical coherence tomography recorded their structural differences. Infrared thermography revealed temperature variations. A laser Doppler study using a combined microcirculation and transcutaneous oxygen monitoring system indicated alterations in blood flow and oxygen perfusion. Raman spectroscopy showed differences in chemical signatures between these areas. The present findings may indicate a potential correlation between the reflexology areas and subsurface pathological changes, showing an association with the healthy or unhealthy status of the lumbar vertebrae.

An analytical study of effect of heat source on MHD blood flow through bifurcated arteries has been done. The blood flowing through arteries is treated to be unsteady Newtonian flow. The coupled linear partial differential equations are solved by converting into ordinary linear differential equations by choosing the axial velocity, normal velocity and temperature field as a functions of y and t along with corresponding boundary conditions. The expressions are obtained for axial velocity, normal velocity and temperature field. The effects of various parameters like Prandtl Number (Pr), Heat Source Parameter (S) and Magnetic Field (M) on axial velocity, normal velocity and temperature field are investigated. It was found that heat source and magnetic field modify the flow patterns and increase the temperature of the blood.

Free radicals are potentially damaging to tissues, producing irreversible damage to biomolecules such as enzymes, proteins and membrane lipids. The current study was conducted to assess the concentration of malionaldehyde(MDA) as a marker of lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant status(TAS) in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and to examine the influence of chemotherapy on these parameters. 45 patients were enrolled into the study. 20(Group I) had only small radiographical changes and were sputum negative. The remainder 25(Group II) had advanced pulmonary tuberculosis and were sputum smear positive. The control group consisted of 20 clinically healthy individuals. In group I & II blood samples were collected for examination before and after 6 months of treatment period with tuberculostatic drugs. Data was analyzed by SPSS software. In patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, both before and after chemotherapy, serum MDA concentration was significantly higher and the content of TAS was significantly lowered in comparison to the control group, though in the course of treatment MDA concentration decreased significantly while the concentration of TAS were stable. These results suggest that increased circulating levels of free radical activity along with decreased TAS are found in active pulmonary tuberculosis and hence may play a role in the resultant fibrosis. It also reinforces the belief that inclusion of antioxidants to the therapy may prove to be useful.

Microalbuminuria refers to the excretion of albumin in the urine at a rate that exceeds normal limits but is less than the detection level for traditional dipstick methods and is considered as a marker of diabetic nephropathy. The current study was conducted to establish the prevalence of elevated urinary albumin levels (microalbuminuria) in a sequential sample of diabetic patients attending hospital diabetic clinics and to determine its relationship with known and putative risk factors, to identify micro- and normoalbuminuric patients in this sample for subsequent comparison of clinical characteristics of the micro- and normoalbuminuric patients identified and to ascertain relationship of serum angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity with diabetic incipient nephropathy. This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences Bhuj (Gujarat). Patients having clinical albuminuria and with other causes of proteinuria were excluded. Data was analyzed by SPSS software. Microalbuminuria was observed in 34.48% in patients with type 1 and 28.33% in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of microalbuminuria between type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Having the condition was significantly associated with advanced age, poor glycaemic control, dyslipidemia (with respect to total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C), smoking, body mass index and coexisting hypertension. The duration of diabetes was a significant correlate in type 1 DM subjects only. No significant association with gender, HDL-C levels, age at onset of DM, mode of treatment, socio-economic status and other lifestyle variations was found. A novel hybrid matrix of zinc oxide-methylene blue (ZnO-MB) has been successfully developed for biosensing application. The introduction of methylene blue into the ZnO thin film leads to reduction in the charge transfer resistance and suggests an increase in the electron transfer capacity of the composite. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was chosen as the model enzyme and effectively immobilized on the surface of hybrid ZnO-MB nanocomposite matrix. Electrochemical measurements were employed to study biosensing response of the GOx/ZnO-MB/ITO bioelectrode as a function of glucose concentration. The low oxidation potential (−0.23 V) of the hybrid bioelectrode, in a mediatorless electrolyte, makes it resistant against interference from other bio-molecules. The low value of Michaelis-Menten constant (2.65 mM) indicates that immobilized GOx retains its enzymatic activity significantly on the surface of nanocomposite hybrid matrix that results in an enhanced affinity towards its substrate (glucose). The ZnO-MB nanocomposite hybrid matrix, exhibiting enhanced sensing response (0.2 μAmM−1cm−2) with long shelf-life (>10 weeks), has potential for the realization of an integrated biosensing device.
