Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) completed its 5 month Survey Validation in 2021 May. Spectra of stellar and extragalactic targets from Survey Validation constitute the first major data sample from the DESI survey. This paper describes the public release of those spectra, the catalogs of derived properties, and the intermediate data products. In total, the public release includes good-quality spectral information from 466,447 objects targeted as part of the Milky Way Survey, 428,758 as part of the Bright Galaxy Survey, 227,318 as part of the Luminous Red Galaxy sample, 437,664 as part of the Emission Line Galaxy sample, and 76,079 as part of the Quasar sample. In addition, the release includes spectral information from 137,148 objects that expand the scope beyond the primary samples as part of a series of secondary programs. Here, we describe the spectral data, data quality, data products, Large-Scale Structure science catalogs, access to the data, and references that provide relevant background to using these spectra.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was designed to conduct a survey covering 14,000 deg ^2 over 5 yr to constrain the cosmic expansion history through precise measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). The scientific program for DESI was evaluated during a 5 month survey validation (SV) campaign before beginning full operations. This program produced deep spectra of tens of thousands of objects from each of the stellar Milky Way Survey (MWS), Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS), luminous red galaxy (LRG), emission line galaxy (ELG), and quasar target classes. These SV spectra were used to optimize redshift distributions, characterize exposure times, determine calibration procedures, and assess observational overheads for the 5 yr program. In this paper, we present the final target selection algorithms, redshift distributions, and projected cosmology constraints resulting from those studies. We also present a One-Percent Survey conducted at the conclusion of SV covering 140 deg ^2 using the final target selection algorithms with exposures of a depth typical of the main survey. The SV indicates that DESI will be able to complete the full 14,000 deg ^2 program with spectroscopically confirmed targets from the MWS, BGS, LRG, ELG, and quasar programs with total sample sizes of 7.2, 13.8, 7.46, 15.7, and 2.87 million, respectively. These samples will allow exploration of the Milky Way halo, clustering on all scales, and BAO measurements with a statistical precision of 0.28% over the redshift interval z < 1.1, 0.39% over the redshift interval 1.1 < z < 1.9, and 0.46% over the redshift interval 1.9 < z < 3.5.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Survey has obtained a set of spectroscopic measurements of galaxies to validate the final survey design and target selections. To assist in these tasks, we visually inspect DESI spectra of approximately 2500 bright galaxies, 3500 luminous red galaxies (LRGs), and 10,000 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to obtain robust redshift identifications. We then utilize the visually inspected redshift information to characterize the performance of the DESI operation. Based on the visual inspection (VI) catalogs, our results show that the final survey design yields samples of bright galaxies, LRGs, and ELGs with purity greater than 99%. Moreover, we demonstrate that the precision of the redshift measurements is approximately 10 km s ^−1 for bright galaxies and ELGs and approximately 40 km s ^−1 for LRGs. The average redshift accuracy is within 10 km s ^−1 for the three types of galaxies. The VI process also helps improve the quality of the DESI data by identifying spurious spectral features introduced by the pipeline. Finally, we show examples of unexpected real astronomical objects, such as Ly α emitters and strong lensing candidates, identified by VI. These results demonstrate the importance and utility of visually inspecting data from incoming and upcoming surveys, especially during their early operation phases.

Abstract

A key component of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey validation (SV) is a detailed visual inspection (VI) of the optical spectroscopic data to quantify key survey metrics. In this paper we present results from VI of the quasar survey using deep coadded SV spectra. We show that the majority (≈70%) of the main-survey targets are spectroscopically confirmed as quasars, with ≈16% galaxies, ≈6% stars, and ≈8% low-quality spectra lacking reliable features. A nonnegligible fraction of the quasars are misidentified by the standard spectroscopic pipeline, but we show that the majority can be recovered using post-pipeline “afterburner” quasar-identification approaches. We combine these “afterburners” with our standard pipeline to create a modified pipeline to increase the overall quasar yield. At the depth of the main DESI survey, both pipelines achieve a good-redshift purity (reliable redshifts measured within 3000 km s ^−1 ) of ≈99%; however, the modified pipeline recovers ≈94% of the visually inspected quasars, as compared to ≈86% from the standard pipeline. We demonstrate that both pipelines achieve a median redshift precision and accuracy of ≈100 km s ^−1 and ≈70 km s ^−1 , respectively. We constructed composite spectra to investigate why some quasars are missed by the standard pipeline and find that they are more host-galaxy dominated (i.e., distant analogs of “Seyfert galaxies”) and/or more dust reddened than the standard-pipeline quasars. We also show example spectra to demonstrate the overall diversity of the DESI quasar sample and provide strong-lensing candidates where two targets contribute to a single spectrum.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) embarked on an ambitious 5 yr survey in 2021 May to explore the nature of dark energy with spectroscopic measurements of 40 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will determine precise redshifts and employ the baryon acoustic oscillation method to measure distances from the nearby universe to beyond redshift z > 3.5, and employ redshift space distortions to measure the growth of structure and probe potential modifications to general relativity. We describe the significant instrumentation we developed to conduct the DESI survey. This includes: a wide-field, 3.°2 diameter prime-focus corrector; a focal plane system with 5020 fiber positioners on the 0.812 m diameter, aspheric focal surface; 10 continuous, high-efficiency fiber cable bundles that connect the focal plane to the spectrographs; and 10 identical spectrographs. Each spectrograph employs a pair of dichroics to split the light into three channels that together record the light from 360–980 nm with a spectral resolution that ranges from 2000–5000. We describe the science requirements, their connection to the technical requirements, the management of the project, and interfaces between subsystems. DESI was installed at the 4 m Mayall Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory and has achieved all of its performance goals. Some performance highlights include an rms positioner accuracy of better than 0.″1 and a median signal-to-noise ratio of 7 of the [O ii ] doublet at 8 × 10 ^−17 erg s ^−1 cm ^−2 in 1000 s for galaxies at z = 1.4–1.6. We conclude with additional highlights from the on-sky validation and commissioning, key successes, and lessons learned.

Abstract

The Euclid space telescope will survey a large dataset of cosmic voids traced by dense samples of galaxies. In this work we estimate its expected performance when exploiting angular photometric void clustering, galaxy weak lensing and their cross-correlation. To this aim, we implement a Fisher matrix approach tailored for voids from the Euclid photometric dataset and present the first forecasts on cosmological parameters that include the void-lensing correlation. We examine two different probe settings, pessimistic and optimistic, both for void clustering and galaxy lensing. We carry out forecast analyses in four model cosmologies, accounting for a varying total neutrino mass, $M_\nu$, and a dynamical dark energy (DE) equation of state, $w(z)$, described by the CPL parametrisation. We find that void clustering constraints on $h$ and $\Omega_b$ are competitive with galaxy lensing alone, while errors on $n_s$ decrease thanks to the orthogonality of the two probes in the 2D-projected parameter space. We also note that, as a whole, the inclusion of the void-lensing cross-correlation signal improves parameter constraints by $10-15\%$, and enhances the joint void clustering and galaxy lensing Figure of Merit (FoM) by $10\%$ and $25\%$, in the pessimistic and optimistic scenarios, respectively. Finally, when further combining with the spectroscopic galaxy clustering, assumed as an independent probe, we find that, in the most competitive case, the FoM increases by a factor of 4 with respect to the combination of weak lensing and spectroscopic galaxy clustering taken as independent probes. The forecasts presented in this work show that photometric void-clustering and its cross-correlation with galaxy lensing deserve to be exploited in the data analysis of the Euclid galaxy survey and promise to improve its constraining power, especially on $h$, $\Omega_b$, the neutrino mass, and the DE evolution., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures - published in A&A

Debaryomyces hansenii J6 is a heavy-metal-tolerant, flavinogenic yeast isolated from a Swedish estuary. We present here the 11.63-Mb genome of this organism containing 5,717 open reading frames. Comparison with available Debaryomyces genomes demonstrated that J6 is closer to D. hansenii MTCC234 than D. fabry CBS789 and D. hansenii CBS767.

Abstract

The yeast Debaryomyces hansenii overproduces riboflavin upon exposure to subtoxic levels of cobalt (Co(+2)). However, mechanisms for survival have yet to be studied and have been hindered by D. hansenii's high genetic heterogeneity among strains. In this study, we used transcriptomic analyses and RNA-seq in order to identify differentially expressed genes in D. hansenii in response to cobalt exposure. Highly upregulated genes under this condition were identified to primarily comprise DNA damage and repair genes, oxidative stress response genes, and genes for cell wall integrity and growth. The main response of D. hansenii to heavy metal stress is the activation of non-enzymatic oxidative stress response mechanisms and control of biological production of reactive oxygen species. Our results indicate that D. hansenii does not seem to be pre-adapted to survive high concentrations of heavy metals. These organisms appear to possess genetic survival and detoxification mechanisms that enable the cells to recover from heavy metal stress.

12. IPC driven dynamic associative cache architecture for low energy

Abstract

Existing schemes for cache energy optimization incorporate a limited degree of dynamic associativity: either direct mapped or full available associativity (say 4-way). In this paper, we explore a more general design space for dynamic associativity (for a 4-way associative cache, consider 1-way, 2-way, and 4-way associative accesses). The other major departure is in the associativity control mechanism. We use the actual instruction level parallelism exhibited by the instructions surrounding a given load to classify it as an IPC k load (for 1/spl les/k/spl les/IW with an issue width of IW) in a superscalar architecture. The lookup schedule is fixed in advance for each IPC classifier 1/spl les/k/spl les/IW. The schedules are as way-disjoint as possible for load/stores with different IPC classifications. The energy savings over SPEC2000 CPU benchmarks average 28.6% for a 32 kB, 4-way, L-1 data cache. The resulting performance (IPC) degradation from the dynamic way schedule is restricted to less than 2.25%, mainly because IPC based placement ends up being an excellent classifier.

Abstract

The antimutagenic effects of whey, acetone extracts, and protein fractions isolated from milk that had been fermented by Lactobacillus helveticus L89 were investigated using the mutagen 4-nitroquinoline-N'-oxide in the Ames test (Salmonella typhimurium TA 100). Fermented milk significantly inhibited mutagenesis induced by 4-nitroquinoline-N'-oxide. However, milk fermented by a nonproteolytic variant of the same strain showed no inhibitory effects. Results were similar for the whey fractions and acetone extracts of the fermented milks. After fermentation, milk proteins were fractionated by size-exclusion HPLC and were tested for antimutagenicity. The fraction showing the greatest activity was further analyzed by reverse-phase HPLC. Our results indicate that antimutagenic compounds are produced in milk during fermentation by L. helveticus, and the release of peptides is one possible contributing mechanism.

14. Debaryomyces hansenii: A Model System for Marine Molecular Biology

Abstract

In an attempt to construct plasmids with the capability of autonomous replication we have isolated two ARS from Debaryomyces utilizing S. cerevisiae strain SEY 2108 (Ura3) and its corresponding gene URA3 as a marker. Attempts are now being made to transform Ura3 Debaryomyces with this plasmid. Transformation attempted with techniques such as protoplasting, alkali cations and electroporation has not met with success. With the arrival of strain J-26 for Dr. L. Adler, transformation will be attempted utilizing hygromycin resistance as a marker. Dr. Adlers has also agreed to generate Ura3 mutants of his strain for use as a biological marker. To generate auxotrophic mutations for transformation, mutagenesis was performed utilizing Ethyl Methyl Sulfonate.

Abstract

Next generation telescopes, like Euclid, Rubin/LSST, and Roman, will open new windows on the Universe, allowing us to infer physical properties for tens of millions of galaxies. Machine learning methods are increasingly becoming the most efficient tools to handle this enormous amount of data, because they are often faster and more accurate than traditional methods. We investigate how well redshifts, stellar masses, and star-formation rates (SFR) can be measured with deep learning algorithms for observed galaxies within data mimicking the Euclid and Rubin/LSST surveys. We find that Deep Learning Neural Networks and Convolutional Neutral Networks (CNN), which are dependent on the parameter space of the training sample, perform well in measuring the properties of these galaxies and have a better accuracy than methods based on spectral energy distribution fitting. CNNs allow the processing of multi-band magnitudes together with $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band images. We find that the estimates of stellar masses improve with the use of an image, but those of redshift and SFR do not. Our best results are deriving i) the redshift within a normalised error of less than 0.15 for 99.9$\%$ of the galaxies with S/N>3 in the $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band; ii) the stellar mass within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for 99.5$\%$ of the considered galaxies; iii) the SFR within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for $\sim$70$\%$ of the sample. Abstract

The Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic programme designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy color-redshift relation to the Euclid depth (I_E=24.5), a key ingredient for the success of Stage IV dark energy projects based on weak lensing cosmology. A spectroscopic calibration sample as representative as possible of the galaxies in the Euclid weak lensing sample is being collected, selecting galaxies from a self-organizing map (SOM) representation of the galaxy color space. Here, we present the results of a near-infrared H- and K-bands spectroscopic campaign carried out using the LUCI instruments at the LBT. Abstract

We determine the product of the expansion rate and angular-diameter distance at redshift z=2.3 from the anisotropy of Lyman-α (Lyα) forest correlations measured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our result is the most precise from large-scale structure at z>1. Using the flat Λ cold dark matter model we determine the matter density to be Ω&#95;{m}=0.36&#95;{-0.04}^{+0.03} from Lyα alone. 18. Testing Low-Redshift Cosmic Acceleration with Large-Scale Structure.

Abstract

We examine the cosmological implications of measurements of the void-galaxy cross-correlation at redshift z=0.57 combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data at 0.110σ significance from these data alone, independent of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and supernovae. Using a nucleosynthesis prior on Ω&#95;{b}h^{2}, we measure the Hubble constant to be H&#95;{0}=72.3±1.9  km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1} from BAO+voids at z<2, and H&#95;{0}=69.0±1.2  km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1} when adding Lyman-α BAO at z=2.34, both independent of the CMB. Adding voids to CMB, BAO, and supernova data greatly improves measurement of the dark energy equation of state, increasing the figure of merit by >40%, but remaining consistent with flat Λ cold dark matter.

Abstract

We provide a model in which both the inflaton and the curvaton are obtained from within the minimal supersymmetric standard model, with known gauge and Yukawa interactions. Since now both the inflaton and curvaton fields are successfully embedded within the same sector, their decay products thermalize very quickly before the electroweak scale. This results in two important features of the model: first, there will be no residual isocurvature perturbations, and second, observable non-Gaussianities can be generated with the non-Gaussianity parameter f(NL)~O(5-1000) being determined solely by the combination of weak-scale physics and the standard model Yukawa interactions.

Abstract

The selection of cohorts from national and state databases in Australia usually relies on patient diagnoses according to International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes and/or Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs). The aim of this study was to select a specific cohort consisting of stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) episodes, thereby allowing the researcher to examine current process of care using State level hospital admissions datasets. Difficulties in accurately selecting the specified cohort were encountered, due to various interpretations of ICD codes and DRGs as well as the placement of codes to DRGs and different classifications used. These difficulties highlighted several issues regarding the relationships between ICD coding and DRGs in stroke and TIA and are the focus of this paper.

Strategically there is a need to not only take a clinical process view of health care delivery but also identify the appropriate information to support the processes. When considering the clinical process view, the challenge for continuous quality improvement is to eliminate inappropriate process steps, and continuously document performance/outcome. The questions are what performance measures are useful, and does a state level data collection capture relatable measures of a process of care.
