Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

JET, the world’s largest operating tokamak with unique Be/W wall and tritium handling capability, completed a Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) campaign in 2021 (Maggi et al 29th Fusion Energy Conf. ) following a decade of preparatory experiments, dedicated enhancements, technical rehearsals and training (Horton et al 2016 Fusion Eng. Des. 109–111 925). Operation with tritium raises significant technical, safety and scientific challenges not encountered in standard protium or deuterium operation. This contribution describes the tritium operational requirements, pulses and technical preparations, new operating procedures, lessons learned and details on the achieved operational availability and performance. The preparation and execution of the recent JET tritium experiments benefitted from the previous experience in 1991 (Preliminary Tritium Experiment), 1997 (DTE1 campaign) and 2003 (Trace Tritium Campaigns) and consisted of the following five phases: technical rehearsals and scenario preparation, tritium commissioning, 100% tritium campaign, D-T campaign (DTE2), tritium clean-up. Following the clean-up JET resumed normal operation and is currently undertaking a further D-T campaign (DTE3).

A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. Abstract

The last decade has increasingly seen the use of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) instead of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). This is due to various advantages of the former on the latter like its smaller size, lower operating voltage, higher detection efficiency, insensitivity to magnetic fields and mechanical robustness to launch vibrations. All these features make SiPMs ideal for use on space based experiments where the detectors require to be compact, lightweight and capable of surviving launch conditions. A downside with the use of this novel type of detector in space conditions is its susceptibility to radiation damage. In order to understand the lifetime of SiPMs in space, both the damage sustained due to radiation as well as the subsequent recovery, or annealing, from this damage have to be studied. Here we present these studies for three different types of SiPMs from the Hamamatsu S13360 series. Both their behaviour after sustaining radiation equivalent to 2 years in low earth orbit in a typical mission is presented, as well as the recovery of these detectors while stored in different conditions. The storage conditions varied in temperature as well as in operating voltage. The study found that the annealing depends significantly on the temperature of the detectors with those stored at high temperatures recovering significantly faster and at recovering closer to the original performance. Additionally, no significant effect from a reasonable bias voltage on the annealing was observed. Finally the annealing rate as a function of temperature is presented along with various operating strategies for the future SiPM based astrophysical detector POLAR-2 as well as for future SiPM based space borne missions., Comment: 33 pages, 24 figures

Abstract

Despite several decades of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger spectral observations, Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) remain one of the big mysteries of modern astrophysics. Polarization measurements are essential to gain a more clear and complete picture of the emission processes at work in these extremely powerful transient events. In this regard, a first generation of dedicated gamma-ray polarimeters, POLAR and GAP, were launched into space in the last decade. After 6 months of operation, the POLAR mission detected 55 GRBs, among which 14 have been analyzed in detail, reporting a low polarization degree and a hint of a temporal evolution of the polarization angle. Starting early 2024 and based on the legacy of the POLAR results, the POLAR-2 instrument will aim to provide a catalog of high quality measurements of the energy and temporal evolution of the GRB polarization thanks to its large and efficient polarimeter. Several spectrometer modules will additionally allow to perform joint spectral and polarization analyzes. The mission is foreseen to make high precision polarization measurements of about 50 GRBs every year on board of the China Space Station (CSS). Abstract

Despite over 50 years of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) observations many open questions remain about their nature and the environments in which the emission takes place. Polarization measurements of the GRB prompt emission have long been theorized to be able to answer most of these questions. The POLAR detector was a dedicated GRB polarimeter developed by a Swiss, Chinese and Polish collaboration. The instrument was launched, together with the second Chinese Space Lab, the Tiangong-2, in September 2016 after which it took 6 months of scientific data. During this period POLAR detected 55 GRBs as well as several pulsars. From the analysis of the GRB polarization catalog we see that the prompt emission is lowly polarized or fully unpolarized. There is, however, the caveat that within single pulses there are strong hints of an evolving polarization angle which washes out the polarization degree in the time integrated analysis. Building on the success of the POLAR mission, the POLAR-2 instrument is currently under development. POLAR-2 is a Swiss, Chinese, Polish and German collaboration and was recently approved for launch in 2024. Thanks to its large sensitivity POLAR-2 will produce polarization measurements of at least 50 GRBs per year with a precision equal or higher than the best results published by POLAR. POLAR-2 thereby aims to make the prompt polarization a standard observable and produce catalogs of the gamma-ray polarization of GRBs. Here we will present an overview of the POLAR mission and all its scientific measurement results. Additionally, we will present an overview of the future POLAR-2 mission, and how it will answer some of the questions raised by the POLAR results., Presented at the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract

The light response of cesium iodide crystals was measured at temperatures of 303 K (30 °C) to 203 K ( − 70 °C) and for gamma sources with energies from 17 keV to 835 keV. Two different methods were used to determine the properties of the CsI:Tl crystals. The first used classic analogue spectrometry equipment to check the dependence of energy resolution, intrinsic resolution, and non-proportionality parameters as a variations in temperature, excitation energy, and integration time. The second method registered the light pulses from the PMT without integrating or shaping circuits. At the current stage of the research, the authors have decided to maintain the thesis about the existence of three decay components in CsI:Tl crystals that was employed in previous studies - the light pulse decays were analyzed under this assumption. We observed that the light pulses slowed with a decrease in temperature. When the crystals were cooled from 303 K to 203 K, the fitted decay times increased significantly by factors of two to four. The non-proportionality of the three fitted components was also determined and it was found that the first and second (fast and slow components) exhibited positive non-proportionality while the third (tail component) presented a negative trend for non-proportionality at temperatures of 303 K–203 K. It was found that using sufficiently long integration times, to include compensating trends of all decay components, the light response of CsI:Tl could be proportional.

Abstract

The prompt emission of GRBs has been investigated for more than 50 years but remains poorly understood. Commonly, spectral and temporal profiles of {\gamma}-ray emission are analysed. However, they are insufficient for a complete picture on GRB-related physics. The addition of polarization measurements provides invaluable information towards the understanding of these astrophysical sources. In recent years, dedicated polarimeters, such as POLAR and GAP, were built. The former of which observed low levels of polarization as well as a temporal evolution of the polarization angle. It was understood that a larger sample of GRB polarization measurements and time resolved studies are necessary to constrain theoretical models. The POLAR-2 mission aims to address this by increasing the effective area by an order of magnitude compared to POLAR. POLAR-2 is manifested for launch on board the China Space Station in 2024 and will operate for at least 2 years. Insight from POLAR will aid in the improvement of the overall POLAR-2 design. Major improvements (compared to POLAR) will include the replacement of multi-anode PMTs (MAPMTs) with SiPMs, increase in sensitive volume and further technological upgrades. POLAR-2 is projected to measure about 50 GRBs per year with equal or better quality compared to the best seen by POLAR. Abstract

This paper presents the results of the fast neutron irradiation (E$_n$ > 0.5MeV) of an EJ-276 scintillator performed in the MARIA research reactor with fluence up to 5.3$\times$10$^{15}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, four samples with size $��$25.4~mm$\times$5~mm were tested. The changes in the light yield, emission and absorption spectrum and neutron/gamma discrimination using PuBe source before and after irradiation are presented. Abstract

This paper presents the results of neutron irradiation of two types of Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC). The measurements were taken at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), Poland and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Russia. Two types of neutron source were used: PuBe with a continuous energy spectrum up to 11 MeV, and mono-energetic 4.8 MeV neutrons produced in a (d,d) reaction. For both sources, fluence in the range of 10 10 n/mm 2 was achieved. A series of MPPC tests were performed after each irradiation. The changes in MPPC properties, such as current–voltage (I–V) characteristics, breakdown voltage and energy resolution of 662 keV from the 137Cs gamma line for a Gd3Al2.6Ga2.4O12 :Ce (1%) scintillator as a function of neutron fluence are presented.

Abstract

This report presents a concept of constructing a detector dedicated for detection of muons observed during measurements carried out at the MPD (Multi-Purpose Detector) detector that is currently under construction at the NICA facility, Russia, Dubna. It has been proposed to design and build an additional detector that will complement the current MPD set and increase its measurement capabilities. The main goal of this project is to provide information from cosmic muons that pass the MPD detector in both in-beam and off-beam experiments. Hence, the detector is called the MPD COsmic Ray Detector (MCORD).The conceptual design of MCORD is proposed by a Polish consortium NICA-PL comprising several Polish scientific institutions. The data from cosmic ray muons could be used as a trigger for calibration of other detection systems comprising the MPD detector. Large surface covered by the MCORD offers also possibility for efficient registration of muons generated in expanding atmospheric showers induced by distant sources. Moreover, beyond some energy threshold, observation of muons originating from decays of collision products will also be possible. In this report examples of the MCORD functionality as a part of the MPD detector are presented. The MCORD is designed as a universal, fast triggering system built as a modular reconfigurable construction. The detection system will be based on plastic scintillators equipped with wavelength shifting fibers, and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) will be used for scintillation readout. The online analysis of received signals will be performed using digital FPGA modules. Due to the modular design, the same system (its small part) can be used for both laboratory testing of other MPD sub-detectors, and the calibration of these detectors after placing them inside the MPD in off-beam mode. The full detector will support these systems as an additional trigger, calibrator, and muon identifier during the normal operation of the MPD detector with the beam. Thanks to its unique construction, it will expand the possibilities of collecting scientific data of the MPD detector with astrophysical observations. The publication will show the assumptions of the mechanical structure and electronic systems of the planned detector. The installation site of the detector as part of the MPD detector will be described in detail. In the following, the results of simulations made in preparation for this project will be presented. In particular, simulations with the CORSIKA code present angular distributions of particles in cosmic showers in the Dubna city region. Since muons dominate the cosmic ray showers, the MPD detector response to expected cosmic muon flux was also simulated. The results provide information about the muon cut-off thresholds depending on the MPD detector composition during the installation campaign. Simulations of muon events that could be used for MPD subsystems calibration were also performed. The results shown for various configuration of MCORD detector modules will enable the estimation of the time necessary to perform such tests in the future. Simulations with UrQMD model shows the muon abundances due to beam-beam collisions. Approximately 90% of muons are created from pions, whereas the number of muons that reach the MCORD detector is 10 times greater than the number of pions. The MPD detector response was also simulated under the influence of a stream of various particles, especially muons. It shows energy dependence of muon transmission coefficient for MPD with and without ECal assembled. Assuming requirement for muon transmission above 95%, the muon cut-off thresholds are 1.6 GeV and 2.0 GeV, respectively. MCORD detector performance evaluation is also reported. In the case when we used scintillators with one fiber with a diameter of 1 mm, the time resolution of about 1.0 ns was recorded, which corresponds to the positional accuracy (σx) of 7.1 cm. The results of laboratory tests show that application of a 2 mm diameter WLS fiber instead of the previously used 1 mm diameter fiber improves the time resolution to 0.80 ns.

Abstract

LaBr3:Ce,CeBr3 and GAGG:Ce scintillators were investigated and the determined characteristics were compared with those obtained for the well-known and widely used CsI:Tl and NaI:Tl crystals. All the detectors were of the same size of 10 × 10 × 5 mm3. The aim of this test study was to single out scintillation detectors most suitable for γ-ray spectrometry and γ-ray emission radial profile measurements in high-temperature plasma experiments. Decay time, energy resolution, non-proportionality and full energy peak detection efficiency ere measured for γ-ray energies up to 1770 keV. Due to their good energy resolution, short decay time and high detection efficiency for MeV gamma rays, LaBr3:Ce and CeBr3 scintillators are proposed as the best candidates for use especially under conditions of high count rates, which are expected in the forthcoming DT experiments.

Abstract

The main detector system at the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) located in Dubna, Russia is the Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD). For better calibration reason, the MPD needs an additional trigger system for an off-beam calibration of MPD sub-detectors and for rejection (veto) of cosmic muons. The system should also be useful for practical astrophysics observations of cosmic showers. The consortium NICA-PL group defines goals and basic assumptions for the MPD Cosmic Ray Detector (MCORD). This article describes the conceptual design and simulation plans of the MCORD detector based on plastic scintillators with SiPM photodetectors and electronic digital system based on the MicroTCA crate.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the proton irradiation of silicon photomulipliers (SiPMs) by mono-energetic 170 MeV protons with fluence up to 4.6$\times$10$^{9}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, three types of silicon photodetectors from Hamamatsu with areas 3$\times$3 mm$^2$ and different subpixel sizes of 25$\times$25 $\mu$m$^2$, 50$\times$50 $\mu$m$^2$, and 75$\times$75 $\mu$m$^2$ were used. The changes in the SiPM dark count rate (DCR) spectrum before and after irradiation in temperatures in the range of 20 $^\circ$C to -65 $^\circ$C are presented. The influence of the DCR changes on the energy resolution of the 662 keV gamma line from the $^{137}$Cs for a non-irradiated GAGG:Ce (1$\%$) scintillator is investigated. The time period of usability of the SiPM detector irradiated by protons in cosmic space was estimated.

Abstract

Evolution of spectroscopic properties of two types of Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPC) during neutron irradiation is reported. In such experiments the change of MPPCs characteristics is a serious issue. A series of neutron irradiation tests were performed at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ, Poland) and Joined Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Russia). Two types of neutron sources were used: PuBe with continous energy spectrum up to 11 MeV and mono-energetic 4.8 MeV neutrons produced in (d,d) reaction. For both cases the fluence in the range of 1010 n/cm2 was achived.

Abstract

Spectroscopic performance of 4 types of large detectors consisting of 3 different scintillators (LaBr3, NaI(Tl) and BGO) coupled to large MPPC array are presented. The measurements are made with S12642–1616PB-50(X) Hamamatsu TSV MPPC array having a 50x50 µm2 cell size and effective active area of 48x48 mm2 (16x16 channels). In all measurements the common readout of all channels is used. The results obtained with MPPC, such as energy resolution and linearity, are compared with measurements of the same crystals on classic photomultiplier. Also the possible optimization of data acquisition electronics is presented.

Abstract

tOne of the important techniques used at JET for studying fast ions is based on measurements of gamma-rays which are produced as a result of nuclear reactions between ions and plasma impurities. The intenseneutron and gamma-ray fluxes expected during a DT campaign impose new requirements on detectorcharacteristics used in such experiments. In addition to good energy resolution, detectors must also becharacterized by a high signal-to-noise ratio and allow to perform measurements at high counting rateabout 1 Mcps. The scintillators which fulfill these requirements are, among others, LaBr3:Ce, alreadytested at JET, and CeBr3with a scintillation decay time of ~20 ns. We report on measurements whichwere performed with a detector module equipped with a 3" × 3" CeBr3scintillator and with an activevoltage divider AVD@NCBJ, designed and constructed at NCBJ. Standard gamma-ray sources, as well asa PuBe source, were used for measurements. The comparison of measured and Monte Carlo simulatedspectra is also presented.© 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. Abstract

In forthcoming deuterium-tritium (DT) experiments on JET a significant population of alpha-particles will be produced. For operating alpha-particle diagnostics at high DT neutron fluxes, specific improvements have to be made. Proposed new detectors for gamma-ray measurements will be based on CeBr3 and LaBr3:Ce scintillators. They are characterized by a good energy resolution, a relatively high detection efficiency for a few MeV gamma-rays and a fast response time. An overview of scintillator parameters is presented. A description of the properties of photodetectors is given to indicate optimal setups. Results of measurements, using gamma-ray sources with energies up to a few MeV, are discussed with relation to the DT campaign requirements.

Abstract

Results of decay spectroscopy on nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly magic $^{48}\mathrm{Ni}$ are presented. The measurements were performed with a time projection chamber with optical readout which records tracks of ions and protons in the gaseous volume. Six decays of $^{48}\mathrm{Ni}$, including four events of two-proton ground-state radioactivity, were recorded. An advanced reconstruction procedure yielded the $2p$ decay energy for $^{48}\mathrm{Ni}$ of ${Q}_{2p}=1.29(4)$ MeV. In addition, the energy spectra of $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed protons emitted in the decays of $^{44}\mathrm{Cr}$ and $^{46}\mathrm{Fe}$, as well as half-lives and branching ratios, were determined. The results were found to be consistent with the previous measurements made with Si detectors. A new proton line in the decay of $^{44}\mathrm{Cr}$ corresponding to the decay energy of 760 keV is reported. The first evidence for the $\ensuremath{\beta}2p$ decay of $^{46}\mathrm{Fe}$, based on one clear event, is shown.

Abstract

Basic concepts and the development of a high counting rate digital spectrometry system based on efficient ADCs and latest available FPGA are presented with the aim of using such a system, coupled to fast scintillators, in plasma experiments. The prototype system is a 1 channel 12-bit 1 GSPS digitizer with $2~\mathrm {V}_{\mathrm {pp}}$ input voltage. Preliminary results tested with different radioactive sources are shown for low (0.03 Mcps) and high (2.2 Mcps) counting rates. A comparison of energy spectra and energy resolution with what obtained by a commercial device is also shown.

Abstract

The decay of the extremely neutron-deficient $^{48}\mathrm{Ni}$ was studied by means of an imaging time-projection chamber, which allowed the recording of tracks of charged particles. The decays of six atoms were observed. Four of them clearly correspond to two-proton radioactivity, providing the first direct evidence for this decay mode in $^{48}\mathrm{Ni}$. Two decays represent $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed proton emission. The half-life of $^{48}\mathrm{Ni}$ is determined to be ${T}_{1/2}=2.{1}_{\ensuremath{-}0.4}^{+1.4}$ ms.

Abstract

The photon spectrum accompanying the orbital K-electron capture in the first forbidden unique decay of 81Kr was measured. The total radiation intensity for the photon energies larger than 50 keV was found to be 1.47(6) x 10^{-4} per K-capture. Both the shape of the spectrum and its intensity relative to the ordinary, non-radiative capture rate, are compared to theoretical predictions. The best agreement is found for the recently developed model which employs the length gauge for the electromagnetic field., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

34. Proton irradiation of plastic scintillator bars for POLAR-2.

Abstract

POLAR-2, a plastic scintillator based Compton polarimeter, is currently under development and planned for a launch to the China Space Station in 2025. It is intended to shed a new light on our understanding of Gamma-Ray Bursts by performing high precision polarization measurements of their prompt emission. The instrument will be orbiting at an average altitude of 383 km with an inclination of 42° and will be subject to background radiation from cosmic rays and solar events. In this work, we tested the performance of plastic scintillation bars, EJ-200 and EJ-248M from Eljen Technology, under space-like conditions, that were chosen as possible candidates for POLAR-2. Both scintillator types were irradiated with 58 MeV protons at several doses from 1.89 Gy(corresponding to about 13 years in space for POLAR-2) up to 18.7 Gy, that goes far beyond the expected POLAR-2 life time. Their respective properties, expressed in terms of light yield, emission and absorption spectra, and activation analysis due to proton irradiation are discussed. 35. Proton irradiation of SiPM arrays for POLAR-2.

Abstract

POLAR-2 is a space-borne polarimeter, built to investigate the polarization of Gamma-Ray Bursts and help elucidate their mechanisms. The instrument is targeted for launch in 2024 or 2025 aboard the China Space Station and is being developed by a collaboration between institutes from Switzerland, Germany, Poland and China. The instrument will orbit at altitudes between 340km and 450km with an inclination of 42 ∘ and will be subjected to background radiation from cosmic rays and solar events. It is therefore pertinent to better understand the performance of sensitive devices under space-like conditions. In this paper we focus on the radiation damage of the silicon photomultiplier arrays S13361-6075NE-04 and S14161-6050HS-04 from Hamamatsu. The S13361 are irradiated with 58MeV protons at several doses up to 4.96Gy, whereas the newer series S14161 are irradiated at doses of 0.254Gy and 2.31Gy. Their respective performance degradation due to radiation damage are discussed. The equivalent exposure time in space for silicon photomultipliers inside POLAR-2 with a dose of 4.96Gy is 62.9years (or 1.78years when disregarding the shielding from the instrument). Primary characteristics of the I-V curves are an increase in the dark current and dark counts, mostly through cross-talk events. Annealing processes at 25 ∘ C were observed but not studied in further detail. Biasing channels while being irradiated have not resulted in any significant impact. Activation analyses showed a dominant contribution of β + particles around 511 keV. Abstract

In this work, we describe the solution developed by the gamma ray camera upgrade enhancement project to improve the spectroscopic properties of the existing JET γ-ray camera. Aim of the project is to enable gamma-ray spectroscopy in JET deuterium-tritium plasmas. A dedicated pilot spectrometer based on a LaBr 3 crystal coupled to a silicon photo-multiplier has been developed. A proper pole zero cancellation network able to shorten the output signal to a length of 120 ns has been implemented allowing for spectroscopy at MHz count rates. The system has been characterized in the laboratory and shows an energy resolution of 5.5% at E γ = 0.662 MeV, which extrapolates favorably in the energy range of interest for gamma-ray emission from fast ions in fusion plasmas.
