The purpose of this study was to synthesize duloxetine (DLX)- loaded Eudragit-Chitosan (Eud-CHT) nanoparticles enclosed in an oral gelatin capsule and to evaluate the potential to transport DLX to the blood-brain barrier (BBB)for improved neuro-availability. The utilization of Eudragit® with chitosan offers a pH-dependent controlled drug release. The physicochemical properties of the formulated DLX-loaded Eud-CHT nanosystem were confirmed using various characterization techniques. SEM confirmed the nanoparticle morphology and pore size distribution. The particle size was 100 ± 73,41 nm, with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0,283 and zeta potential of 16±2,79 mV. Drug entrapment efficacy (DEE) of 72% was attained, and molecular modelling predicted an efficient and controllable drug delivery system. The release of DLX from the nanosystem was evaluated at pH1.2, pH 6.8 and pH 7.4. At a pH of 6.8, 40 % of DLX was released, with only 20 % at pH 1.2 and 35% at pH 7.4. This demonstrated DLX's pH-dependent release and the Eud-CHT nanosystem's shielding effect at gastric pH. In addition, HEK 293 neural cells confirmed the non-toxicity of the DLX-Eud-CHT nanosystem. In silico modelling revealed a DLX-Eud-CHT composite with an outer cationic surface attributable to the EUD moieties on nanoparticles for preferential cell recognition and uptake at the anionic cell interface. The combined trials and results from the synthesis of DLX-Eud-CHT nanoparticles showed that these nanoparticles could be utilized as a potentially invaluable formulation for oral drug delivery of duloxetine with improved neuro-availability.

The rampant antimicrobial resistance crisis calls for efficient and targeted drug delivery of antibiotics at the infectious site. Hence, this study aimed to synthesize a pH-responsive dimethylglycine surface-modified branched lipid (DMGSAD-lipid). The structure of the synthesized lipid was fully confirmed. The lipid polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPHNPs) were formulated using the solvent evaporation method and characterised. Two LPHNPs (VCM_HS15_LPHNPs and VCM_RH40_LPHNPs) were formulated and characterised for size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential (ZP). Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations revealed that both the systems self-assembled to form energetically stable aggregates. The ZP of RH40_VCM_LPHNPs changed from 0.55 ± 0.14-9.44 ± 0.33 Vm, whereas for SH15_VCM_LPHNPs, ZP changed from - 1.55 ± 0.184 Vm to 9.83 ± 0.52 Vm at pH 7.4 and 6.0, respectively. The encapsulation efficiencies of VCM were above 40% while the drug release was faster at acidic pH when compared to pH 7.4. The antibacterial activity of LPHNPs against MRSA was eight-fold better in MICs at pH 6.0, compared to 7.4, when compared to bare VCM-treated specimens. The study confirms that pH-responsive LPHNPs have the potential for enhancing the treatment of bacterial infections and other diseases characterised by acidic conditions at the target site.

The aim of this study was to synthesize a novel biocompatible pH-responsive oleic acid-based dendritic lipid amphiphile (OLA-SPDA) which self-assembled into stable micelles (OLA-SPDA -micelles) with a relatively low critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 5.6 × 10−6 M. The formulated micelles had particle size, polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential (ZP) of 84.16 ± 0.184 nm, 0.199 ± 0.011 and −42.6 ± 1.98 mV, respectively, at pH 7.4. The vancomycin (VCM) encapsulation efficiency was 78.80 ± 3.26%. The micelles demonstrated pH-responsiveness with an increase in particle size to 141.1 ± 0.0707 nm and a much faster release profile at pH 6.0, as compared to pH 7.4. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of VCM-OLA-SPDA-micelle against methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was 8-fold lower compared to bare VCM, and the formulation had a 4-fold lower MIC at pH 6.0 when compared to the formulation's MIC at pH 7.4. MRSA viability assay showed the micelles had a percentage killing of 93.39% when compared bare-VCM (58.21%) at the same MIC (0.98 μg/mL). In vivo mice (BALB/c) skin infection models showed an 8-fold reduction in MRSA burden after treatment with VCM-OLA-SPDA-micelles when compared with bare VCM. The above results suggest that pH-responsive VCM-OLA-SPDA-micelles has the potential to be an effective carrier to enhance therapeutic outcomes against infections characterised by low pH.

The inner $\sim$200 pc region of the Galaxy contains a 4 million M$_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH), significant quantities of molecular gas, and star formation and cosmic ray energy densities that are roughly two orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding levels in the Galactic disk. At a distance of only 8.2 kpc, the region presents astronomers with a unique opportunity to study a diverse range of energetic astrophysical phenomena, from stellar objects in extreme environments, to the SMBH and star-formation driven feedback processes that are known to influence the evolution of galaxies as a whole. We present a new survey of the Galactic center conducted with the South African MeerKAT radio telescope. Radio imaging offers a view that is unaffected by the large quantities of dust that obscure the region at other wavelengths, and a scene of striking complexity is revealed. We produce total intensity and spectral index mosaics of the region from 20 pointings (144 hours on-target in total), covering 6.5 square degrees with an angular resolution of 4$"$,at a central frequency of 1.28 GHz. Many new features are revealed for the first time due to a combination of MeerKAT's high sensitivity, exceptional $u,v$-plane coverage, and geographical vantage point. We highlight some initial survey results, including new supernova remnant candidates, many new non-thermal filament complexes, and enhanced views of the Radio Arc Bubble, Sgr A and Sgr B regions. By compiling all archival data and reprocessing a subset of it, we have evaluated the impact of differences in data processing or flux determination methods used by different groups and attempted to mitigate these differences to provide a more uniform data set. Simple power-law fits to the uniform afterglow light curve indicate a t 0.86±0.04 rise, a t -1.92±0.12 decline, and a peak occurring at 155 ± 4 days. The afterglow is optically thin throughout its evolution, consistent with a single spectral index (-0.584 ± 0.002) across all epochs. This gives a precise and updated estimate of the electron power-law index, p = 2.168 ± 0.004. We present a progress report of a study of FR I and FR II radio galaxies. Several new morphological features in the radio emission are now revealed using the high (μJy) sensitivity reached in the range 550–1712 MHz, more than a factor of three, at the high (∼4″−7″) angular resolution with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and MeerKAT. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand if we need to revise our current classification scheme for classical radio galaxies. In order to address our goals, we have carefully constructed a sample of 14 (6 FR I, 6 FR II and 2 FR 0) radio galaxies. The uGMRT and MeerKAT images of our four target sources revealed a wealth of morphological details, e.g., filamentary structure in the emission from the lobes, misalignments, radio emission beyond the hot-spots in three sources, etc., see Fanaroff et al. (2021). Here, we present preliminary results for two more radio galaxies from our sample using uGMRT, in the light of the local environment. Finally, we are awaiting uGMRT and MeerKAT observations of remaining sample sources. Our results show that for the radio galaxies in this study, the morphological classification scheme for the classical FR I/FR II radio galaxies still holds, even with the improved imaging capabilities of the uGMRT and MeerKAT. Furthermore, we need to be cautious when using automated procedures for classification schemes, e.g., in surveys (with poorer sensitivities and angular resolutions) because of the rich morphological details that are shown in our uGMRT and MeerKAT images.

V.; Loi, F., We report the discovery of large amounts of previously undetected cold neutral atomic hydrogen (H I) around the core triplet galaxies in the nearby NGC 7232 galaxy group with MeerKAT. With a physical resolution of ∼1 kpc, we detect a complex web of low-surface-brightness H I emission down to a 4σ column density level of ∼1 × 1019 cm−2 (over 44 km s−1). The newly discovered H I streams extend over ∼20 arcmin corresponding to 140 kpc in projection. This is approximately three times the H I extent of the galaxy triplet (52 kpc). The H I debris has an H I mass of ∼6.6 × 109 M⊙, more than 50 per cent of the total H I mass of the triplet. Within the galaxy triplet, NGC 7233 and NGC 7232 have lost a significant amount of H I while NGC 7232B appears to have an excess of H I. The H I deficiency in NGC 7232 and NGC 7233 indicates that galaxy–galaxy interaction in the group concentrates on this galaxy pair while the other disc galaxies have visited them over time. In comparison to the AMIGA sample of isolated galaxies, we find that with regards to its total H I mass the NGC 7232/3 galaxy triplet is not H I-deficient. We have undertaken a systematic study of FRI and FRII radio galaxies with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and MeerKAT. The main goal is to explore whether the unprecedented few $\mu$Jy sensitivity reached in the range 550-1712 MHz at the resolution of $\sim4^{\prime\prime}-7^{\prime\prime}$ reveals new features in the radio emission which might need us to revise our current classification scheme for classical radio galaxies. In this paper we present the results for the first set of four radio galaxies, i.e. 4C 12.02, 4C 12.03, CGCG 044-046 and CGCG 021-063. The sources have been selected from the 4C sample with well-defined criteria, and have been imaged with the uGMRT in the range 550-850 MHz (band 4) and with the MeerKAT in the range 856-1712 MHz (L-band). Full resolution images are presented for all sources in the sample, together with MeerKAT in-band spectral images. Additionally, the uGMRT-MeerKAT spectral image and MeerKAT L-band polarisation structure are provided for CGCG 044-046. Our images contain a wealth of morphological details, such as filamentary structure in the emission from the lobes, radio emission beyond the hot-spots in three sources, and misalignments. We briefly discuss the overall properties of CGCG 044-046 in the light of the local environment as well, and show possible restarted activity in 4C 12.03 which needs to be confirmed. We conclude that at least for the sources presented here, the classical FRI/FRII morphological classification still holds with the current improved imaging capabilities, but the richness in details also suggests caution in the systematic morphological classification carried out with automatic procedures in surveys with poorer sensitivity and angular resolution., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, and 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

ESO 149-G003 is a close-by, isolated dwarf irregular galaxy. Previous observations with the ATCA indicated the presence of anomalous neutral hydrogen (HI) deviating from the kinematics of a regularly rotating disc. We conducted follow-up observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope during the 16-dish Early Science programme as well as with the MeerLICHT optical telescope. Our more sensitive radio observations confirm the presence of anomalous gas in ESO 149-G003, and further confirm the formerly tentative detection of an extraplanar HI component in the galaxy. Employing a simple tilted-ring model, in which the kinematics is determined with only four parameters but including morphological asymmetries, we reproduce the galaxy's morphology, which shows a high degree of asymmetry. By comparing our model with the observed HI, we find that in our model we cannot account for a significant (but not dominant) fraction of the gas. From the differences between our model and the observed data cube we estimate that at least 7%-8% of the HI in the galaxy exhibits anomalous kinematics, while we estimate a minimum mass fraction of less than 1% for the morphologically confirmed extraplanar component. We investigate a number of global scaling relations and find that, besides being gas-dominated with a neutral gas-to-stellar mass ratio of 1.7, the galaxy does not show any obvious global peculiarities. Given its isolation, as confirmed by optical observations, we conclude that the galaxy is likely currently acquiring neutral gas. The desire for wide-field of view, large fractional bandwidth, high sensitivity, high spectral and temporal resolution has driven radio interferometry to the point of big data revolution where the data is represented in at least three dimensions with an axis for spectral windows, baselines, sources, etc; where each axis has its own set of sub-dimensions. The cost associated with storing and handling these data is very large, and therefore several techniques to compress interferometric data and/or speed up processing have been investigated. Unfortunately, averaging-based methods for visibility data compression are detrimental to the data fidelity, since the point spread function (PSF) is position-dependent, i.e. distorted and attenuated as a function of distance from the phase centre. The position dependence of the PSF becomes more severe, requiring more PSF computations for wide-field imaging. Deconvolution algorithms must take the distortion into account in the major and minor cycles to properly subtract the PSF and recover the fidelity of the image. This approach is expensive in computation since at each deconvolution iteration a distorted PSF must be computed. We present two algorithms that approximate these position-dependent PSFs with fewer computations. The first algorithm approximates the position-dependent PSFs in the $uv$-plane and the second algorithm approximates the position-dependent PSFs in the image-plane. We present the discovery of a single radio relic located at the edge of the galaxy cluster A2384, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. A2384 is a nearby ($z$ = 0.092), low mass, complex bimodal, merging galaxy cluster that displays a dense X-ray filament ($\sim$ 700 kpc in length) between A2384(N) (Northern cluster) and A2384(S) (Southern cluster). The origin of the radio relic is puzzling. By using the MeerKAT observation of A2384, we estimate that the physical size of the radio relic is 824 $\times$ 264 kpc$^{2}$ and that it is a steep spectrum source. The radio power of the relic is $P_{1.4\mathrm{GHz}}$ $\sim$ (3.87 $\pm$ 0.40) $\times$ 10$^{23}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. This radio relic could be the result of shock wave propagation during the passage of the low-mass A2384(S) cluster through the massive A2384(N) cluster, creating a trail appearing as a hot X-ray filament. In the previous GMRT 325 MHz observation we detected a peculiar FR I radio galaxy interacting with the hot X-ray filament of A2384, but the extended radio relic was not detected; it was confused with the southern lobe of the FR I galaxy. This newly detected radio relic is elongated and perpendicular to the merger axis, as seen in other relic clusters. In addition to the relic, we notice a candidate radio ridge in the hot X-ray filament. The physical size of the radio ridge source is $\sim$ 182 $\times$ 129 kpc$^{2}$. Detection of the diffuse radio sources in the X-ray filament is a rare phenomenon, and could be a new class of radio source found between the two merging clusters of A2384(N) and A2384(S)., 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We present HI observations of the jellyfish galaxy, JO201. This massive galaxy (M$_{\ast} = 3.5 \times 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$) is falling along the line-of-sight towards the centre of a rich cluster (M$_{200} \sim 1.6 \times 10^{15}$ M$_\odot$, $\sigma_{cl} \sim 982$ km/s) at a high velocity $\geq$3363 km/s. Its H$\alpha$ emission shows a $\sim$40 kpc tail confined closely to its stellar disc and a $\sim$100 kpc tail extending further out. We find HI emission coinciding only with the shorter clumpy H$\alpha$ tail. In total, we measure an HI mass of M$_{\rm HI} = 1.65 \times 10^{9}$ M$_\odot$, which is about 60% lower than expected based on its stellar mass and stellar surface density. We compared JO201 to another jellyfish in the GASP sample, JO206 (of similar mass but residing in a 10$\times$ less massive cluster), and find that they are similarly HI-deficient. Of the total HI mass in JO201, about 30% lies outside the galaxy disc in projection. This HI fraction is probably a lower limit since most of the HI is redshifted relative to the stellar disc and could be outside the disc. The global star formation rate (SFR) analysis of JO201 suggests that its observed SFR would be expected if it had 10$\times$ its current HI mass. The disc is the main contributor of the high star formation efficiency at a given HI gas density for both galaxies, but their tails also show higher star formation efficiencies compared to the outer regions of field galaxies. Generally, we find that JO201 and JO206 are similar based on their HI content, stellar mass and star formation rate. This finding is unexpected considering their different environments. A toy model comparing the ram pressure of the ICM versus the restoring forces of these galaxies suggests that the ram pressure strength exerted on them could be comparable if we consider their 3D orbital velocities and radial distances relative to the clusters., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Antibiotic resistance due to suboptimal targeting and inconsistent antibiotic release at bacterial infection sites has driven the formulation of stimuli-responsive nanocarriers for antibacterial therapy. Unlike conventional nanocarriers, stimuli-responsive nanocarriers have the ability to specifically enhance targeting and drug release profiles. There has been a significant escalation in the design and development of novel nanomaterials worldwide; in particular, intrinsic stimuli-responsive antibiotic nanocarriers, due to their enhanced activity, improved targeted delivery, and superior potential for bacterial penetration and eradication. Herein, we provide an extensive and critical review of pH-, enzyme-, redox-, and ionic microenvironment-responsive nanocarriers that have been reported in literature to date, with an emphasis on the mechanisms of drug release, the nanomaterials used, the nanosystems constructed and the antibacterial efficacy of the nanocarriers. The review also highlights further avenues of research for optimizing their potential and commercialization. This review confirms the potential of intrinsic stimuli-responsive nanocarriers for enhanced drug delivery and antibacterial killing. Modern radio telescopes are routinely reaching depths where normal starforming galaxies are the dominant observed population. Realising the potential of radio as a tracer of star formation and black hole activity over cosmic time involves achieving such depths over representative volumes, with radio forming part of a larger multiwavelength campaign. In pursuit of this we used the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to image $\sim$5 deg$^{2}$ of the VIDEO/XMM-LSS extragalactic deep field at 1--2 GHz. We achieve a median depth of 16 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ with an angular resolution of 4.5\arcsec. Comparisons with existing radio observations of XMM-LSS showcase the improved survey speed of the upgraded VLA: we cover 2.5 times the area and increase the depth by $\sim$20\% in 40\% of the time. Direction-dependent calibration and wide-field imaging were required to suppress the error patterns from off-axis sources of even modest brightness. We derive a catalogue containing 5,762 sources from the final mosaic. Sub-band imaging provides in-band spectral indices for 3,458 (60\%) sources, with the average spectrum becoming flatter than the canonical synchrotron slope below 1 mJy. Positional and flux-density accuracy of the observations, and the differential source counts are in excellent agreement with those of existing measurements. We present MeerKAT 1000 MHz and 1400 MHz observations of a bright radio galaxy in the southern hemisphere, ESO~137-006. The galaxy lies at the centre of the massive and merging Norma galaxy cluster. The MeerKAT continuum images (rms ~0.02 mJy/beam at ~10" resolution) reveal new features that have never been seen in a radio galaxy before: collimated synchrotron threads of yet unknown origin, which link the extended and bent radio lobes of ESO~137-006. The most prominent of these threads stretches in projection for about 80 kpc and is about 1 kpc in width. MeerKAT's large number of antennas, spanning 8 km with a densely packed 1 km core, create a powerful instrument for wide-area surveys, with high sensitivity over a wide range of angular scales. The MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey (MGCLS) is a programme of long-track MeerKAT L-band (900-1670 MHz) observations of 115 galaxy clusters, observed for $\sim$6-10 hours each in full polarisation. The first legacy product data release (DR1), made available with this paper, includes the MeerKAT visibilities, basic image cubes at $\sim$8" resolution, and enhanced spectral and polarisation image cubes at $\sim$8" and 15" resolutions. Typical sensitivities for the full-resolution MGCLS image products are $\sim$3-5 {\mu}Jy/beam. The basic cubes are full-field and span 4 deg^2. The enhanced products consist of the inner 1.44 deg^2 field of view, corrected for the primary beam. The survey is fully sensitive to structures up to $\sim$10' scales and the wide bandwidth allows spectral and Faraday rotation mapping. Kliko is a Docker-based container specification for running one or multiple related compute jobs. The key concepts of Kliko are the encapsulation of data processing software into a container and the formalization of the input, output and task parameters. By formalizing the parameters, the software is represented as abstract building blocks with an uniform and consistent interface. The main advantage is enhanced scriptability and empowering pipeline composition. Formalization is realized by bundling a container with a Kliko file, which describes the IO and task parameters. This Kliko container can then be opened and run by a Kliko runner. The Kliko runner will parse the Kliko definition and gather the values for these parameters, for example by requesting user input or retrieving pre-defined values from disk. Parameters can be various primitive types, for example: float, int or the path to a file. This paper will also discuss the implementation of a support library named Kliko which can be used to create Kliko containers, parse Kliko definitions, andchain Kliko containers in workflows using a workflow manager library such as Luigi. The Kliko library can be used inside the container to interact with the Kliko runner. Finally to illustrate the applicability of the Kliko definition, this paper will discuss two reference implementations based on the Kliko library: RODRIGUES, a web-based Kliko container scheduler and output visualizer specifically for astronomical data, and VerMeerKAT, a multi-container workflow data reduction pipeline which is being used as a prototype pipeline for the commissioning of the MeerKAT radio telescope. We present MeerKAT observations of neutral hydrogen gas (HI) in the nearby merger remnant NGC 1316 (Fornax A), the brightest member of a galaxy group which is falling into the Fornax cluster. We find HI on a variety of scales, from the galaxy centre to its large-scale environment. For the first time we detect HI at large radii (70 - 150 kpc in projection), mostly distributed on two long tails associated with the galaxy. Gas in the tails dominates the HI mass of NGC 1316: 7e+8 Msun -- 14 times more than in previous observations. The total HI mass is comparable to the amount of neutral gas found inside the stellar body, mostly in molecular form. The HI tails are associated with faint optical tidal features thought to be the remnant of a galaxy merger occurred a few billion years ago. They demonstrate that the merger was gas-rich. During the merger, tidal forces pulled some gas and stars out to large radii, where we now detect them in the form of optical tails and, thanks to our new data, HI tails; while torques caused the remaining gas to flow towards the centre of the remnant, where it was converted into molecular gas and fuelled the starburst revealed by the galaxy's stellar populations. Several of the observed properties of NGC 1316 can be reproduced by a ~ 10:1 merger between a dominant, gas-poor early-type galaxy and a smaller, gas-rich spiral occurred 1 - 3 Gyr ago, likely followed by subsequent accretion of satellite galaxies., Astronomy & Astrophysics, accepted

We present VLA HI observations of JO206, a prototypical ram-pressure stripped galaxy in the GASP sample. This massive galaxy (M$_{\ast} =$ 8.5 $\times$ 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) is located at a redshift of $z =$ 0.0513, near the centre of the low-mass galaxy cluster, IIZw108 ($\sigma \sim575$ km/s). JO206 is characterised by a long tail ($\geq$90 kpc) of ionised gas stripped away by ram-pressure. We find a similarly long HI tail in the same direction as the ionised gas tail and measure a total HI mass of $3.2 \times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$. This is about half the expected HI mass given the stellar mass and surface density of JO206. A total of $1.8 \times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ (60%) of the detected HI is in the gas stripped tail. An analysis of the star formation rate shows that the galaxy is forming more stars compared to galaxies with the same stellar and HI mass. On average we find a HI gas depletion time of $\sim$0.5 Gyr which is about four times shorter than that of "normal" spiral galaxies. We performed a spatially resolved analysis of the relation between star formation rate density and gas density in the disc and tail of the galaxy at the resolution of our HI data. The star formation efficiency of the disc is about 10 times higher than that of the tail at fixed HI surface densities. Both the inner and outer parts of JO206 show an enhanced star formation compared to regions of similar HI surface density in field galaxies. After a decade of design and construction, South Africa's SKA-MID precursor MeerKAT has begun its science operations. To make full use of the widefield capability of the array, it is imperative that we have an accurate model of the primary beam of its antennas. We have taken available L-band full-polarization 'astro-holographic' observations of three antennas and a generic electromagnetic simulation and created sparse representations of the beams using principal components and Zernike polynomials. The spectral behaviour of the spatial coefficients has been modelled using discrete cosine transform. We have provided the Zernike-based model over a diameter of 10 deg averaged over the beams of three antennas in an associated software tool (EIDOS) that can be useful in direction-dependent calibration and imaging. The model is more accurate for the diagonal elements of the beam Jones matrix and at lower frequencies. As we get more accurate beam measurements and simulations in the future, especially for the cross-polarization patterns, our pipeline can be used to create more accurate sparse representations of MeerKAT beams., 16 pages, 18 figures. Modern interferometric imaging relies on advanced calibration that incorporates direction-dependent effects. Their increasing number of antennas (e.g. in LOFAR, VLA, MeerKAT/SKA) and sensitivity are often tempered with the accuracy of their calibration. Beam accuracy drives particularly the capability for high dynamic range imaging (HDR - contrast > 1:$10^6$). The Radio Interferometric Measurement Equation (RIME) proposes a refined calibration framework for wide field of views (i.e. beyond the primary lobe and first null) using beam models. We have used holography data taken on 12 antennas of the Very Large Array (VLA) with two different approaches: a `data-driven' representation derived from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and a projection on the Zernike polynomials. We determined sparse representations of the beam to encode its spatial and spectral variations. For each approach, we compressed the spatial and spectral distribution of coefficients using low-rank approximations. The spectral behaviour was encoded with a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). We compared our modelling to that of the Cassbeam software which provides a parametric model of the antenna and its radiated field. We present comparisons of the beam reconstruction fidelity vs. `compressibility'. We found that the PCA method provides the most accurate model. In the case of VLA antennas, we discuss the frequency ripple over L-band which is associated with a standing wave between antenna reflectors. We present new observations of Fornax A taken at 1 GHz with the MeerKAT telescope and at 6 GHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The sensitive (noise ~16 micro-Jy beam$^{-1}$), high resolution ( < 10'') MeerKAT images show that the lobes of Fornax A have a double-shell morphology, where dense filaments are embedded in a diffuse and extended cocoon. We study the spectral properties of these components by combining the MeerKAT and SRT observations with archival data between 84 MHz and 217 GHz. For the first time, we show that multiple episodes of nuclear activity must have formed the extended radio lobes. The modelling of the radio spectrum suggests that the last episode of injection of relativistic particles into the lobes started ~ 24 Myr ago and stopped approximately 12 Myr ago. More recently (~ 3 Myr ago), a less powerful and short ( < 1 Myr) phase of nuclear activity generated the central jets. Currently, the core may be in a new active phase. It appears that Fornax A is rapidly flickering. The dense environment in which Fornax A lives has lead to a complex recent merger history for this galaxy, including mergers spanning a range of gas contents and mass ratios, as shown by the analysis of the galaxy's stellar- and cold-gas phases. This study reports on the synthesis and use of novel two-chain fatty acid-based lipids (FAL) containing amino acid head groups in the formulation of pH-responsive liposomes for the targeted delivery of vancomycin (VAN). The formulated liposomes were characterised for their size, polydispersity index (PDI), surface charge and morphology. The drug-loading capacity, drug release, cell viability, and in vitro and in vivo efficacy of the formulations were investigated. A sustained VAN release profile was observed and in vitro antibacterial studies against S. aureus and MRSA showed superior and prolonged activity over 72 h at both pH 7.4 and 6.0. Enhanced antibacterial activity at pH 6.0 was observed for the DOAPA-VAN-Lipo and DLAPA-VAN-Lipo formulations. Flow cytometry studies indicated a high killing rate of MRSA cells using DOAPA-VN-Lipo (71.98%) and DLAPA-VN-Lipo (73.32%). In vivo studies showed reduced MRSA recovered from mice treated with formulations by four- and two-folds lower than bare VN treated mice, respectively. The targeted delivery of VAN can be improved by novel pH-responsive liposomes from the two-chain (FAL) designed in this study.

We present new 0.6-10 GHz observations of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 covering the period up to 300 days post-merger, taken with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the MeerKAT telescope. We use these data to precisely characterize the decay phase of the late-time radio light curve. We find that the temporal decay is consistent with a power-law slope of t^-2.2, and that the transition between the power-law rise and decay is relatively sharp. Such a slope cannot be produced by a quasi-isotropic (cocoon-dominated) outflow, but is instead the classic signature of a relativistic jet. This provides strong observational evidence that GW170817 produced a successful jet, and directly demonstrates the link between binary neutron star mergers and short-hard GRBs. Using simple analytical arguments, we derive constraints on the geometry and the jet opening angle of GW170817. These results are consistent with those from our companion Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) paper, reporting superluminal motion in GW170817., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. We report on holographic measurements of the antenna primary beam (PB) of the MeerKAT radio telescope, an SKA precursor instrument currently being commissioned in the Karoo, South Africa. We use the characteristic basis function pattern (CBFP) approach, as well as analytic bases (Zernike polynomials, spherical harmonics) to derive smooth, parameterized PB models from holography observations.We discuss how these beam models are incorporated into the data processing at the calibration and imaging stage, and how this improves the quality of the resulting images.

The cosmic evolution of galaxies' neutral atomic gas content is a major science driver for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as well as for its South African (MeerKAT) and Australian (ASKAP) precursors. Among the HI large survey programs (LSPs) planned for ASKAP and MeerKAT, the deepest and narrowest tier of the "wedding cake" will be defined by the combined L-band+UHF-band Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) survey, which will probe HI in emission within a single "cosmic vuvuzela" that extends to z = 1.4, when the universe was only a third of its present age. Through a combination of individual and stacked detections (the latter relying on extensive multi-wavelength studies of the survey's target field), LADUMA will study the redshift evolution of the baryonic Tully--Fisher relation and the cosmic HI density, the variation of the HI mass function with redshift and environment, and the connection between HI content and galaxies' stellar properties (mass, age, etc.). The survey will also build a sample of OH megamaser detections that can be used to trace the cosmic merger history. This proceedings contribution provides a brief introduction to the survey, its scientific aims, and its technical implementation, deferring a more complete discussion for a future article after the implications of a recent review of MeerKAT LSP project plans are fully worked out.

New radio (MeerKAT and Parkes) and X-ray (XMM-Newton, Swift, Chandra, and NuSTAR) observations of PSR J1622-4950 indicate that the magnetar, in a quiescent state since at least early 2015, reactivated between 2017 March 19 and April 5. The radio flux density, while variable, is approximately 100x larger than during its dormant state. The X-ray flux one month after reactivation was at least 800x larger than during quiescence, and has been decaying exponentially on a 111+/-19 day timescale. This high-flux state, together with a radio-derived rotational ephemeris, enabled for the first time the detection of X-ray pulsations for this magnetar. At 5%, the 0.3-6 keV pulsed fraction is comparable to the smallest observed for magnetars. The overall pulsar geometry inferred from polarized radio emission appears to be broadly consistent with that determined 6-8 years earlier. However, rotating vector model fits suggest that we are now seeing radio emission from a different location in the magnetosphere than previously. This indicates a novel way in which radio emission from magnetars can differ from that of ordinary pulsars. The torque on the neutron star is varying rapidly and unsteadily, as is common for magnetars following outburst, having changed by a factor of 7 within six months of reactivation., Comment: Published in ApJ (2018 April 5); 13 pages, 4 figures

MRSA infections are a major global healthcare problem associated with high morbidity and mortality. The application of novel materials in antibiotic delivery has efficiently contributed to the treatment of MRSA infections. The aim of the study was to develop novel hyaluronic acid-oleylamine (HA-OLA) conjugates with 25–50% degrees of conjugation, for application as a nano-drug carrier with inherent antibacterial activity. The biosafety of synthesized novel HA-OLA conjugates was confirmed by in vitro cytotoxicity assay. Drug carrying ability of HA-OLA conjugates was confirmed by 26.1–43.12% of vancomycin (VCM) encapsulation in self-assembled polymersomes. These polymersomes were dispersed in nano-sized range (196.1–360.9 nm) with a negative zeta potential. Vancomycin loaded polymersomes were found to have spherical and bilayered morphology. The VCM loaded polymersomes displayed sustained drug release for 72 h. In vitro studies showed moderate antibacterial activity for HA-OLA conjugates against both S. aureus and MRSA with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 500 μg/mL. The VCM loaded HA-OLA polymersomes displayed four-fold lower MIC (1.9 μg/mL) than free VCM (7.8 μg/mL) against MRSA. Furthermore, synergism was observed for VCM and HA-OLA against MRSA. Flow cytometry showed 1.8-fold higher MRSA cell death in the population for VCM loaded polymersomes relative to free drug, at concentration of 1.95 μg/mL. Bacterial cell morphology showed that the drug loaded polymersomes had stronger impact on MRSA membrane, compared to free VCM. These findings suggest that, HA-OLA conjugates are promising nano-carriers to function as antibiotic delivery vehicles for the treatment of bacterial/MRSA infections.

Observationally, weak lensing has been served so far by optical surveys due to the much larger number densities of background galaxies achieved, which is typically by two to three orders of magnitude compared to radio. However, the high sensitivity of the new generation of radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will provide a density of detected galaxies that is comparable to that found at optical wavelengths, and with significant source shape measurements to make large area radio surveys competitive for weak lensing studies. This will lead weak lensing to become one of the primary science drivers in radio surveys too, with the advantage that they will access the largest scales in the Universe going beyond optical surveys, like LSST and Euclid, in terms of redshifts that are probed. RadioLensfit is an adaptation to radio data of "lensfit", a model-fitting approach for galaxy shear measurement, originally developed for optical weak lensing surveys. Its key advantage is working directly in the visibility domain, which is the natural approach to adopt with radio data, avoiding systematics due to the imaging process. We present results on galaxy shear measurements, including investigation of sensitivity to instrumental parameters such as the visibilities gridding size, based on simulations of individual galaxy visibilities performed by using SKA1-MID baseline configuration. The high sensitivity of the new generation of radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will allow cosmological weak lensing measurements at radio wavelengths that are competitive with optical surveys. We present an adaptation to radio data of lensfit, a method for galaxy shape measurement originally developed and used for optical weak lensing surveys. This likelihood method uses an analytical galaxy model and makes a Bayesian marginalisation of the likelihood over uninteresting parameters. It has the feature of working directly in the visibility domain, which is the natural approach to adopt with radio interferometer data, avoiding systematics introduced by the imaging process. As a proof of concept, we provide results for visibility simulations of individual galaxies with flux density S >= 10 muJy at the phase centre of the proposed SKA1-MID baseline configuration, adopting 12 frequency channels in the band 950 - 1190 MHz. Weak lensing shear measurements from a population of galaxies with realistic flux and scalelength distributions are obtained after natural gridding of the raw visibilities. Shear measurements are expected to be affected by "noise bias": we estimate the bias in the method as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We obtain additive and multiplicative bias values that are comparable to SKA1 requirements for SNR > 18 and SNR > 30, respectively. The multiplicative bias for SNR > 10 is comparable to that found in ground-based optical surveys such as CFHTLenS, and we anticipate that similar shear measurement calibration strategies to those used for optical surveys may be used to good effect in the analysis of SKA radio interferometer data., 11 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS accepted

The direction- and frequency-dependence of the primary beam gain pattern of a dish antenna pose one of the most challenging problems in radio-interferometric data reduction. In this paper, we present a new method of incorporating the beam during the calibration process, using a simulated beam model and the Multi-Term Multi-Frequency Synthesis algorithm. We have imaged JVLA data of the field around the radio source 3C147 out to the second sidelobe; the image has an unprecedented dynamic range of 5,000,000∶1.

Weak gravitational lensing measurements are traditionally made at optical wavelengths where many highly resolved galaxy images are readily available. However, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) holds great promise for this type of measurement at radio wavelengths owing to its greatly increased sensitivity and resolution over typical radio surveys. The key to successful weak lensing experiments is in measuring the shapes of detected sources to high accuracy. In this document we describe a simulation pipeline designed to simulate radio images of the quality required for weak lensing, and will be typical of SKA observations. We provide as input, images with realistic galaxy shapes which are then simulated to produce images as they would have been observed with a given radio interferometer. We exploit this pipeline to investigate various stages of a weak lensing experiment in order to better understand the effects that may impact shape measurement. We first show how the proposed SKA1-Mid array configurations perform when we compare the (known) input and output ellipticities. We then investigate how making small changes to these array configurations impact on this input-outut ellipticity comparison. We also demonstrate how alternative configurations for SKA1-Mid that are smaller in extent, and with a faster survey speeds produce similar performance to those originally proposed. We then show how a notional SKA configuration performs in the same shape measurement challenge. Finally, we describe ongoing efforts to utilise our simulation pipeline to address questions relating to how applicable current (mostly originating from optical data) shape measurement techniques are to future radio surveys. We present observations and models of the kinematics and the distribution of the neutral hydrogen (HI) in the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy, Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM). We observed WLM with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and as part of the MeerKAT Early Science Programme, where 16 dishes were available. The HI disc of WLM extends out to a major axis diameter of 30 arcmin (8.5 kpc), and a minor axis diameter of 20 arcmin (5.6 kpc) as measured by the GBT. We use the MeerKAT data to model WLM using the TiRiFiC software suite, allowing us to fit different tilted-ring models and select the one that best matches the observation. Our final best-fitting model is a flat disc with a vertical thickness, a constant inclination and dispersion, and a radially-varying surface brightness with harmonic distortions. To simulate bar-like motions, we include second-order harmonic distortions in velocity in the tangential and the vertical directions. We present a model with only circular motions included and a model with non-circular motions. The latter describes the data better. Overall, the models reproduce the global distribution and the kinematics of the gas, except for some faint emission at the 2-sigma level. We model the mass distribution of WLM with a pseudo-isothermal (ISO) and a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter halo models. The NFW and the ISO models fit the derived rotation curves within the formal errors, but with the ISO model giving better reduced chi-square values. The MeerKAT telescope will be one of the most sensitive radio arrays in the pre-SKA era. Here we discuss a low-frequency SZ-selected cluster survey with MeerKAT, the MeerKAT Extended Relics, Giant Halos, and Extragalactic Radio Sources (MERGHERS) survey. The primary goal of this survey is to detect faint signatures of diffuse cluster emission, specifically radio halos and relics. SZ-selected cluster samples offer a homogeneous, mass-limited set of targets out to higher redshift than X-ray samples. MeerKAT is sensitive enough to detect diffuse radio emission at the faint levels expected in low-mass and high-redshift clusters, thereby enabling radio halo and relic formation theories to be tested with a larger statistical sample over a significantly expanded phase space. Complementary multiwavelength follow-up observations will provide a more complete picture of any clusters found to host diffuse emission, thereby enhancing the scientific return of the MERGHERS survey., 12 pages, 3 figures, proceedings from MeerKAT Science: On the Pathway to the SKA, 25-27 May, 2016
