Investigations of the frequency of bending vibrations of the car bodies of 61-4440 model range, which includes compartment cars, staff cars, non-compartment cars, coach cars, restaurant cars and others, are described. The bodies of all cars of this model range have the same overall dimensions and are made of corrosionresistant steels (stainless) with flat corrugated sheathing of the lower (under the window) belt.To assess the influence of the design features of stainless steel bodies on its bending stiffness and the parameters of bending vibrations in the vertical plane, a computational and experimental complex of works was carried out.After analyzing the calculation results and experimental data, proposals were developed and implemented to increase the bending stiffness of the metal body structure with stainless steel skin. To check the implemented proposals, complex tests were carried out to determine the parameters of bending vibrations of the metal structure of the experimental body. The tests were carried out according to the combined method developed by the authors. For this, a vibrator, installed in the console parts of the body, and impulse excitation were used.The results of testing the metal structure of the experimental body in comparison with the results of testing the car bodies of 61-4440 model range showed the effectiveness of the implemented proposals, namely: increasing the frequency of the first tone of bending vibrations by 18 %; decrease in the amplitude of vertical vibrations of the body structure at the frequency of the first tone from 12 to 50 %; decrease in the amplitude of the vertical accelerations of the metal structure of the body during oscillations at the frequency of the first tone approximately by 2 times; significant reduction in horizontal acceleration in the area of the middle section walls. The effectiveness of the implemented proposals for increasing the bending stiffness of the metal structure of the experimental body allows recommending them for the entire model range of 61-4440 cars.

One of the activities of the JSC “FPK” is the creation of competitive advantages for passenger rail transport by formulating proposals for the provision of new services in long-distance trains. Currently, there is a need for intercity and even international transportation of automobiles for passengers traveling on long-distance trains.To resolve this issue, the JSC “FPK” developed a technical task, according to which the PKTB L JSC “RZD” designed a specialized passenger car for the transportation of automobiles in the long-distance trains. It was created on the basis of a 47D model car built in Germany, which was modernized during its overhaul.Prototype of the new car has passed a full range of tests in accordance with the requirements of the technical regulations of the Customs Union (TR CU) 001/2011 at the test center of the JSC NO “TIV”. Based on the positive results of the dynamic-strength, fireprevention, electrical and other tests, the Voronezh Car Repair Plant received from the Federal Agency for Railway Transport a certificate of compliance with the requirements of the TR CU and the right to manufacture an initial batch of cars.During impact tests, the low reliability of the standard thrustscrew fastening of the car wheels was established. In order to eliminate the noted drawback, a lock-cable mount was developed. Repeated impact tests have confirmed the effectiveness of the new wheel mounting design.Operation of the first batch of cars (8 and 5 units) showed a great demand for this type of service, especially on the directions Moscow—St. Petersburg—Moscow, Moscow—Helsinki—Moscow, Moscow—Adler—Moscow. In this regard, the issue of the development and manufacture of new cars with improved performance indicators (increasing the number of transported automobiles to 8–10 units instead of 4–5 units in the operated cars) is being worked out.

Authors address the issues of expanding the speed range for operation of autonomous power supply systems for air-conditioned passenger cars. For the first time in the domestic car construction, the issue of reducing the minimum start-up speed of a generator-drive unit arose when the passenger fleet of the Sakhalin Railway was renewed, where the speed of passenger cars is much lower than the overall network speed. Research carried out by CJSC SO "TIV" and JSC "TVZ" has shown that the use of V-belts in the modernization of the textropic-reduction-cardan drive allows solving this problem. Kinematic diagram of the drive was adopted without changes, but with the replacement of the V-belts C (B)-2360T with new narrow belts XPC-2360 without working surface wrap and with a formed tooth on the lower base. In the tensioner, the main spring with a stiffness of 75 N/mm was replaced with a spring of increased stiffness (100 N/mm). The main change was the replacement of the 2GV003 generator with a 2GV008 low-speed generator, which has a minimum rotation at full power (700 rpm). This modernization of the drive made it possible to turn on the generator 2GV008 at rated power, starting at a speed of 30 km/h.The article sets the task of expanding the speed range of operation of the EV-7 and EV-10 autonomous power supply systems for cars without air conditioning. It is solved by forcing the excitation of the generators.Analysis of modern systems of autonomous power supply of passenger cars showed that the expansion of the speed range of its operation can be achieved in three ways:• raising the gear ratio of the gearbox to ensure it is switched on to the nominal mode at a carriage speed of 15 - 20 km/h without changing the parameters of the generator and the entire system of autonomous power supply;• modernization of the electrical equipment complex for passenger cars to ensure the operation of the main power consumers and charge the battery while driving at low speeds (over 18 km/h) without changing the mechanical parameters and composition of the serial generator-drive unit;• modernization of the generator in order to reduce its turnon revolutions to the power required to provide the main power consumers without changing the mechanical parameters of the drive.All three methods have its advantages and disadvantages, the choice of any of them is determined by the technical requirements for a specific car model.

The article examines methodical issues of selection of heat insulation materials, their properties affecting energy efficiency, as well as methodical issues of experimental determination of heat insulation properties of the car body. This issue has become recently relevant due to the increased requirements to saving of the fuel and energy resources and to improvement of the passenger travel comfort. Domestic and international regulatory documents are analyzed from this perspective.Contemporary materials used for heat insulation of the car body, methods of determination of the average heat transfer coefficient and requirements to such materials are examined. Review of the test results of the most widely spread passenger cars; the issue is arisen regarding necessity of putting the obtained results of experimental research in compliance with the actual operating conditions with regard to the changes of temperature, air humidity and car movement speed.The article examines in details disadvantages of the currently used standardized method of determination of the average heat transfer coefficient. The issues affecting accuracy of determination of this parameter are underlined, which occur in the experimental research and in processing of the obtained results. Practical use of obtained results for designing of new rolling stock is examined.Ultimately, the authors conclude that the valid domestic standardized method of determination of the average heat transfer coefficient does not take into account the number of important conditions. Examination of effect of these conditions on the results of experimental research allows the authors to make conclusion regarding necessity of review of methodical and regulatory and technical documentation for the test methods.

At present, large-capacity refrigerated containers (LCRC) are widely used for the transport of perishable goods. Transportation of such containers by rail is carried out by couplings of 10-12 fitting platforms and a car with diesel-electric power station. Analysis of this method of transporting large-capacity refrigerated containers by rail showed that it has a number of shortcomings that complicate the transportation process and increase the costs of the carrier (or perishable freight owner).Reduction of costs for the transportation of LCRC can be achieved by equipping the fitting platforms with an autonomous power supply system with a generator-drive unit (GPU) from the axis of the wheel pair of the bogie. However, most of the fitting platforms are installed on three-piece freight bogies, and this creates certain difficulties when embedding the GPU into the undercarriage space.Based on the performed analysis of domestic and foreign designs of generator-driven units and the results of studies for 18-100 three-element freight bogies, it is recommended to use a two-stage drive from the wheel pair axis consisting of a single-stage gear reducer and a V-belt drive, allowing to achieve a total gear ratio of 5,3.According to the chosen scheme, design documentation was developed and two prototypes were made. Experimental samples of GPU with a two-stage drive passed preliminary and acceptance tests, according to the results of which it is recommended to make an installation batch. At present, two 60-foot fitting platforms equipped with an autonomous power supply system are being manufactured for the purpose of carrying out running tests.

To adapt container flats for transportation of high-capacity reefers (HCR) there was developed stand-alone power supply system (SAPSS) to be mounted on the flatcar three-piece freight bogie. Such a system ensures power supply to HCR all over the travel route by rail. One of the SAPSS key components proves to be generator drive unit comprising generator, V-belt transmission and single-reduction gear unit with dissectible driving gear mounted in the midpart of the wheelset axle. To confirm workability of the generator drive unit and obtain its pull and energy characteristics there were conducted rig tests of its prototype using for this purpose exerciser developed by the VNIIZhT design center. The exerciser was equipped with instrumentation systems capable to determine V-belt tension by the tension screw force value and assess slipping by rotating speeds of the driving and driven V-belt pulleys. Rig tests implied container flat running at various speeds. Three SAPSS loading modes were tested inclusive of open circuit operation. There was purposely developed testing procedure, allowing to assess slipping of the V-belt transmission within the accuracy of 0.01 %. Experimental data were collated with calculation results obtained by the authors beforehand. The SAPSS prototype tests outcomes evidence that generator drive unit is capable to support the system operation at power levels up to 16±1 kW within the container flat running speed range from 30 to 132 kph.
