A supervised machine learning algorithm is applied to the visual representations of the energy deposits in two orthogonal views of the calorimeter of ISS-CREAM. Convolutional Neural Net- works (CNNs) backed by Tensorflow are used to calibrate the sampled energy of the calorimeter and reconstruct the total primary energy of cosmic rays (CR), as well as for CR identification. The CNN regression models are trained on detailed Monte Carlo simulated events reproducing the behavior of the ISS-CREAM instrument suite, and the results indicate that a calorimeter energy reconstruction resolution of as good as 25% is achieved. The energy sampled in the calorimeter is determined with a resolution as good as 8%. The CNN classification model can reach a CR identification accuracy of up to 93%. The CR primary energy reconstruction results from machine learning methods are consistent with a simple scaling of the sampled energy. The increased accuracy of this CNN energy reconstruction comes from the additional information of the longitudinal and lateral energy deposit profiles. This machine learning approach is widely applicable to a range of particle physics and astrophysics problems.

The response to 150 GeV/nuc primary lead ($^{208}$Pb) and fragmented (A/Z=2.4, 2.2, 2.0) beams measured a silicon strip detector, designed for use in the Heavy Nuclei eXplorer (HNX) and an upgrade of the Super Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder (SuperTIGER) balloon experiment, was evaluated in a CERN test beam (H8A) during Nov - Dec 2018. The 500 $\mu$m thick, single-sided silicon detectors have 32 DC-coupled strips with 3 mm pitch on the junction side with $9.6 \times 9.6$ cm$^2$ active area. Discrete charge-preamplifiers and shaping amplifiers were used to read out the ohmic and junction side signals simultaneously using the SuperTIGER DAQ system. We report on the response in a configuration where all 32 strips were joined and read out together. The strip detector-under-test was situated between planar silicon detectors, which provided the charge selection as well as a comparison of the measured response of each detector. The combined data set shows excellent charge resolution and finely resolved elemental peaks from helium (Z=2) through lead (Z=82). In this paper, we provide a description of the test beam experiment and the results of the charge resolution analysis.

A technique to identify energetic cosmic-ray electrons in the face of large nuclei backgrounds is to use a calorimeter followed by a shower tail-catcher boron-doped scintillator on a balloon or satellite instrument. Thermalized neutrons produced in interactions of the cosmic ray within the material of the instrument can be detected at late times (several microseconds) following the triggering event. To this end, for example, the DAMPE satellite instrument includes a Neutron Detector at the bottom of its instrument stack, and the ISS-CREAM space station experiment similarly includes a Boronated Scintillator Detector. One difficulty of interpreting the thermal neutron capture signal in the scintillator is that a late fluorescence signal is also present, with time scales similar to those of the 2.7 microsecond exponentially falling neutron capture time distribution. Thus the two effects must be carefully disentangled. We have measured the response of a non-boronated thick scintillator to electron and pion showers in CERN beam tests, and find the presence of a significant late fluorescence component in the light yield that must be accounted for. The measured scintillator response is well represented by a three component yield model, with time constants from ~10 ns to ~2.4 microseconds and appropriate relative strengths. GEANT4 was modified to accommodate this three-component scintillation model, yielding excellent agreement with the CERN beam test data. We describe the measurements and the model in this work.

A hydrophobic, highly transparent silica aerogel with a refractive index of $\sim $1.15 was developed using sol–gel polymerization, pin drying, and supercritical carbon dioxide solvent extraction technologies. A total of 96 monolithic tiles with dimensions of 11 cm $\times $ 11 cm $\times $ 1 cm were mass produced with a high crack-free yield for use as Cherenkov radiators to be installed in the proximity-focusing ring-imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector. The RICH detector, containing 36 aerogel tiles, will be installed in the High Energy Light Isotope eXperiment (HELIX) spectrometer and used to measure the velocity of cosmic-ray particles. HELIX is a balloon-borne experimental program designed to measure the chemical and isotopic abundances of light cosmic-ray nuclei. A water-jet cut test of the aerogel tiles and a gluing test of the trimmed tiles with dimensions of 10 cm $\times $ 10 cm $\times $ 1 cm in an aluminum frame were successful in the context of integration into the radiator module.

HELIX (High Energy Light Isotope eXperiment) is a balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the chemical and isotopic abundances of light cosmic ray nuclei. Detailed measurements by HELIX, especially of $^{10}$Be from 0.2 GeV/n to beyond 3 GeV/n, will provide an essential set of data for the study of propagation processes of the cosmic rays. HELIX consists of a 1 Tesla superconducting magnet with a high-resolution gas tracking system, time-of-flight detector, and a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector. The instrument is scheduled to have a long-duration balloon flight out of McMurdo Station during NASA's 2020/21 Antarctic balloon campaign. Here, we discuss the scientific goals and the design of the experiment, and report on its current status.

HELIX (High Energy Light Isotope eXperiment) is a balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the chemical and isotopic abundances of light cosmic ray nuclei, especially the $^{\textrm{10}}\textrm{Be}/^{\textrm{9}}\textrm{Be}$ ratio over the energy range from 0.2 GeV/n to beyond 3 GeV/n. This is a key measurement for constraining cosmic-ray propagation models. The detector is a mass spectrometer, which is built around a 1 Tesla superconducting magnet and a high-resolution tracking system to determine particle rigidity. Time-of-flight counters and a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) are used to measure velocities. The proximity-focused RICH consists of a radiator made of aerogel tiles (refractive index approximately 1.15) and a detector plane of silicon photomultipliers. For discrimination of the $^{\textrm{9}}\textrm{Be}$ and $^{\textrm{10}}\textrm{Be}$ isotopes at high energy, the refractive index of the aerogel must be known to a precision of 0.07%. Given the manufacturing tolerances in the production process, the index must be mapped over the lateral extent of aerogel tiles on a fine grid. In this contribution, we describe and show initial results from procedures developed for this task. These include laser-deflection and electron-beam measurements.

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) are increasingly being used in ground-based astrophysics experiments as a replacement for Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). These compact low power, rugged sensors are also well suited for space applications and have an added advantage over PMTs in that they do not require high-voltage bias. Efforts are underway at NASA Goddard and our collaborators to develop large-area arrays of SiPMs as the readout for the upcoming funded CubeSat missions such as BurstCube and Terrestrial RaYs Analysis and Detection (TRYAD) and also larger missions including the ultra-heavy cosmic-ray Heavy Nuclei Explorer (HNX) experiment and the gamma-ray Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) experiment. Our team has recently tested SiPMs in a heavy ion beam at CERN. The primary beam consisted of lead ions with energy of ~150 GeV/nuc. SiPM hardware was exposed to both a pure and fragmented Pb beam allowing us to look at ions from Z=1 to Z=82. We report in this paper on direct comparisons with the performance of Hamamatsu R1924A photomultipliers in addition to examining the signals (and subsequent effects) from direct exposure to a lead beam.

This paper reports the successful fabrication of silica aerogel Cherenkov radiators produced in the first batches from a 96-tile mass production performed using pin-drying technique in our laboratory. The aerogels are to be used in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector in the spectrometer of a planned balloon-borne cosmic-ray observation program, HELIX (High Energy Light Isotope eXperiment). A total of 36 transparent, hydrophobic aerogel tiles with a high refractive index of 1.16 and dimensions of 10 cm $\times $ 10 cm $\times $ 1 cm will be chosen as the flight radiators. Thus far, 40 out of the 48 tiles fabricated were confirmed as having no tile cracking. In the first screening, 8 out of the first 16 tiles were accepted as flight-qualified candidates, based on basic optical measurement results. To fit the aerogel tiles into a radiator support structure, the trimming of previously manufactured prototype tiles using a water-jet cutting device was successful., Submitted to Nucl. Instrum. International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) instrument on the International Space Station (ISS) is an experiment to study origin, propagation, acceleration and elemental composition of cosmic rays. The Top Counting Detector (TCD) and Bottom Counting Detector (BCD) are parts of the detector suite of the ISS-CREAM experiment and are designed to separate electrons and protons for studying electron and gamma-ray physics. In addition, the TCD/BCD provide a redundant trigger to that of the calorimeter and a low energy trigger to the ISS-CREAM instrument. After launching, the TCD/BCD trigger was found to be working well. Also, the TCD/BCD have been stable and their hit positions were confirmed to be well matched with other detectors on board. We present the performance and status of the TCD/BCD in flight.

The Silicon Charge Detector (SCD), placed at the top of the ISS-CREAM payload, consists of 4 layers. Each layer has 2688 silicon pixels and associated electronics arranged in such a fashion that its active detection area of 78.2 × 73.6 cm 2 is free of dead area. The foremost goal of the SCD is to efficiently and precisely measure the charge of cosmic rays passing through it. The 4-layer configuration was chosen to achieve the best precision in measuring the charge of cosmic rays within the constraints on the mass, volume and power allotted to it. The amount of material used for its support structure was minimized as well to reduce the chance of interactions of the cosmic ray within the structure. Given the placement of the SCD, its 4-layer configuration and the minimal amount of material in the cosmic-ray trajectory, the SCD is designed to measure the charge of cosmic rays ranging from protons to iron nuclei with excellent detection efficiency and charge resolution. We present the design and fabrication of the SCD as well as its performance during space environment tests which it underwent successfully. We also present its performance in charge measurement using heavy ions in a beam test at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) instrument is a next-generation experiment for the direct detection and study of cosmic-ray nuclei and electrons. With a long exposure in low Earth orbit, the experiment will determine the particle fluxes and spectral details of cosmic-ray nuclei from hydrogen to iron, over an energy range of about 1 0 12 eV to > 1 0 15 eV, and of cosmic-ray electrons over an energy range of about 5 × 1 0 10 eV to > 1 0 13 eV. The instrument was deployed to the ISS in August 2017 on the SpaceX CRS-12 mission. We review the design, implementation and performance of one of the ISS-CREAM detector systems: a boron loaded scintillation detector used in discriminating electron-induced events from the much more abundant cosmic-ray nuclei.

The Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass (CREAM) experiment at the International Space Station (ISS) aims to elucidate the source and acceleration mechanisms of high-energy cosmic rays by measuring the energy spectra from protons to iron. The instrument is planned for launch in 2015 at the ISS, and it comprises a silicon charge detector, a carbon target, top and bottom counting detectors, a calorimeter, and a boronated scintillator detector. The top and bottom counting detectors are developed for separating the electrons from the protons, and each of them comprises a plastic scintillator and a 20×20 silicon photodiode array. Each photodiode is 2.3 cm×2.3 cm in size and exhibits good electrical characteristics. The leakage current is measured to be less than 20 nA/cm 2 at an operating voltage. The signal-to-noise ratio is measured to be better than 70 using commercial electronics, and the radiation hardness is tested using a proton beam. A signal from the photodiode is amplified by VLSI (very-large-scale integration) charge amp/hold circuits, the VA-TA viking chip. Environmental tests are performed using whole assembled photodiode detectors of a flight version. Herein, we present the characteristics of the developed photodiode along with the results of the environmental tests.

International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass experiment at the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) is developed for studying the origin, acceleration and propagation mechanism of high energy cosmic rays. The Top and Bottom Counting Detectors (TCD/BCD), sub-detectors of the ISS-CREAM instrument, are developed for electron/ γ -ray physics. The TCD/BCD help distinguish electrons from protons by comparing the hit and shower width distributions for electrons and protons. The e/p separation capability of the TCD/BCD is studied by using the GEANT3 simulation package, and optimal parameters for the e/p separation are obtained.

International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) is scheduled for launch in 2017. It is designed to directly measure and identify theelemental composition of incident Galactic cosmic rays from a few hundred GeV to PeV energies.Such large energy range sensitivity is reached by using an electromagnetic sampling calorimeter(CAL) which measures the energy deposit of particle-induced showers. The CAL is composedof twenty layers of tungsten plates interleaved with scintillating fibers, and glued together usingepoxy-coated fiberglass to comply with space launch requirements. In August 2015, beam testmeasurements were performed at CERN to verify the performance of the CAL using layers ofepoxy-coated fiberglass placed between tungsten plates. The CAL response to electron and pionbeams and its performance are reported and compared with previous beam test configurations.

International audience; The Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) instrument for the International Space Station (ISS) is a detector for studying the origin, acceleration and propagation mechanism of high-energy cosmic rays. The ISS-CREAM instrument is scheduled to launch in 2017 to the ISS. The Top and Bottom Counting Detectors (TCD/BCD) are designed for studying electron and gamma-ray physics. The TCD/BCD are composed of a plastic scintillator and an array of photodiodes The active detection areas of the TCD/BCD are 500 $\times$ 500 mm$^2$ and 600 $\times$ 600 mm$^2$, respectively. The TCD/BCD were completed in 2015 and passed the environmental tests for safety in a space environment. After finishing these tests, the TCD/BCD were integrated with the payload. The TCD is located between the carbon target of the ISS-CREAM instrument and the calorimeter, and the BCD is located below the calorimeter. The TCD/BCD can distinguish between electrons and protons by using the different shapes between electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the high-energy region. We study the TCD/BCD performance in various energy ranges by using GEANT3 simulation data. Here, we present the status of the electron and proton separation study with the TCD/BCD simulation.

International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) instrument is designed and built to measure elemental spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei (1 ≤ Z ≤ 26) and electrons. It will measure energy of incident cosmic rays from 1011 to 10^15 eV with a tungsten/scintillator sampling calorimeter and densified carbon target with an interaction length of ~ 1 λL. A finely segmented, four-layer silicon charge detector will identify the elemental composition with a resolution of ~ 0.15e. The instrument is triggered by selectable, independent, and combined algorithms from the calorimeter and a scintillator-based counting detector on the top and bottom of the calorimeter. The counting detectors also provide separation of protons and electrons using differences in the shower shapes. A boronated scintillator detector provides additional e/p separation by looking at late scintillation light produced by a particle interacting in the calorimeter system. ISS-CREAM underwent vibrational, electromagnetic, thermal/vacuum, and telemetry systems tests at various NASA f acilities to qualify for rocket transportation and space operations. All testing and integration were completed and ISS-CREAM was delivered to NASA. It is now flight ready and waiting for launch on SpaceX-12 in 2017. ISS-CREAM integration, environmental qualification, and instrument performance will be presented.

We present the design of a four-photomultiplier tube (PMT) assembly for measuring light generation in the Boronated Scintillator Detector (BSD) of the Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM). The light produced in the scintillator includes a contribution from the capture of thermalized neutrons produced in cosmic ray interactions, as well as delayed fluorescence, in the range of several microseconds following the incident cosmic ray impact. The BSD is held in an insensitive state until a cosmic-ray trigger causes a rapid turn on of the PMTs to detect late light signals, several microseconds after the trigger. The design includes two pulsed high-voltage supplies, which serve to gate the first two dynodes of the Hamamatsu R1924A PMTs used in the assembly. When the dynode gates are held in the “off” state, this scheme is shown to suppress >10 5 photons from injection into the tube’s multiplier stage, while being capable of rapid switching into a stable operating mode in less than 1 μ s. This mitigates any backgrounds from afterpulsing that might otherwise be present in the PMT response following the cosmic ray incidence.

The time dependence of the relative light emission of Eljen Technology EJ-200 polyvinyltoluene-based plastic scintillator was measured between 1 and 10 μ s after the passage of a particle shower, a singly charged particle (atmospheric muon), and with a UV LED exciting the fluor. This was compared in magnitude to the integrated response for the prompt light (within 500 ns of excitation). A model with a time-dependent yield consisting of three exponentially decaying components (fast, medium, and slow) was developed to fit the data. Note that the exact time structure of early ( 1 μ s ) light emission was not measured for individual components, only for all three components together This model assumes all three components share the same rise time. The decay time constants of the fast, medium and slow components are, respectively, 7.8 ns, 490 ns, and 2370 ns. The relative total normalized yields for each component are: fast 95.8%, medium 2.2%, and slow 2.0%.

International audience; The Boron And Carbon Cosmic rays in the Upper Stratosphere (BACCUS) balloon-borne exper-iment flew for 30 days over Antarctica in December 2016. It is the successor of the CREAMballoon program in Antarctica which recorded a total cumulative exposure of 161 days. BAC-CUS is primarily aimed to measure cosmic-ray boron and carbon fluxes at the highest energiesreachable with a balloon or satellite experiment, in order to provide essential information for abetter understanding of cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy. The payload is made of multipleparticle physics detectors which measure the charge up to Z=26 and energy of incident particlesfrom a few hundred GeV to a few PeV. The newly designed Transition Radiation Detector (TRD)measures signals that are a function of the charge and Lorentz factor. In April 2016, BACCUSwas taken to CERN in its flight configuration to characterize its detectors’ response to beams ofelectrons and pions. The performance of the TRD using beam test data are reported in this paper.

International audience; Primary cosmic-ray elemental spectra have been measured with the balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment since 2004. The third CREAM payload (CREAM-III) flew for 29 days during the 2007–2008 Antarctic season. Energies of incident particles above 1 TeV are measured with a calorimeter. Individual elements are clearly separated with a charge resolution of ∼0.12 e (in charge units) and ∼0.14 e for protons and helium nuclei, respectively, using two layers of silicon charge detectors. The measured proton and helium energy spectra at the top of the atmosphere are harder than other existing measurements at a few tens of GeV. The relative abundance of protons to helium nuclei is 9.53 ± 0.03 for the range of 1 TeV/n to 63 TeV/n. This ratio is considerably smaller than other measurements at a few tens of GeV/n. The spectra become softer above ∼20 TeV. However, our statistical uncertainties are large at these energies and more data are needed.

The Cosmic Ray Electron Synchrotron Telescope (CREST) high-altitude balloon experiment is a pathfinding effort to detect for the first time multi-TeV cosmic-ray electrons. Such would be the markers of nearby cosmic accelerators, as energetic electrons from distant Galactic sources are expected to be depleted by radiative losses during interstellar transport. Electrons will be detected indirectly by the characteristic signature of their geomagnetic synchrotron losses, in the form of a burst of coaligned x-ray photons intersecting the plane of the instrument. Since the primary electron itself need not traverse the payload, an effective detection area is achieved that is several times the nominal 6.4 m 2 instrument. The payload is composed of an array of 1024 BaF2 crystals surrounded by a set of veto scintillator detectors. A long-duration balloon flight in Antarctica is planned for the 2011-12 season.

During its second Antarctic flight, the CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) balloon experiment collected data for 28 days, measuring the charge and the energy of cosmic rays (CR) with a redundant system of particle identification and an imaging thin ionization calorimeter. Preliminary direct measurements of the absolute intensities of individual CR nuclei are reported in the elemental range from carbon to iron at very high energy., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, presented at XV International Symposium on Very High Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions (ISVHECRI 2008)

We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM). The instrument included different particle detectors to provide redundant charge identification and measure the energy of CRs up to several hundred TeV. The measured individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe are presented up to $\sim 10^{14}$ eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for these primary elements and it can be fitted to an $E^{-2.66 \pm 0.04}$ power law in energy. Moreover, a new measurement of the absolute intensity of nitrogen in the 100-800 GeV/$n$ energy range with smaller errors than previous observations, clearly indicates a hardening of the spectrum at high energy. The relative abundance of N/O at the top of the atmosphere is measured to be $0.080 \pm 0.025 $(stat.)$ \pm 0.025 $(sys.) at $\sim $800 GeV/$n$, in good agreement with a recent result from the first CREAM flight., 32 pages, 10 figures. We present new measurements of heavy cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies per- formed during the first flight of the balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM (Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass). This instrument uses multiple charge detectors and a transition radiation detector to provide the first high accuracy measurements of the relative abundances of elements from boron to oxygen up to energies around 1 TeV/n. The data agree with previous measurements at lower energies and show a relatively steep decline (~E$^-0.6$ to E$^-0.5$) at high energies. They further show the source abundance of nitrogen relative to oxygen is ~10% in the TeV/n region., Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Launched from McMurdo (Antarctica) in December 2005, the balloon experiment CREAM (cosmic ray energetics and mass) collected about 15 million triggers during its second flight of 28 days. Redundant charge identification, by two pixelated silicon arrays and a time resolved pulse shaping technique from a scintillator system, allowed a clear signature of the primary nuclei. The energy was measured with a tungsten/SciFi calorimeter preceded by a graphite target. Preliminary results from the analysis of the data of the second flight are presented.

The balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) has completed two flights in Antarctica, with a combined duration of 70 days. One of the detectors in the payload is the SCD (silicon charge detector) that measures the charge of high energy cosmic rays. The SCD was assembled with silicon sensors. A sensor is a 4 × 4 array of DC-coupled PIN diode pixels with the total active area of 21 × 16 mm2. The SCD used during the first flight (December 2004-January 2005) was a single layer device, then upgraded to a dual layer device for the second flight (December 2005-January 2006), covering the total sensitive area of 779 × 795 mm2. Flight data demonstrated that adding a second layer improved SCD performance, showing excellent particle charge resolution. With a total dissipation of 136 W for the dual layer system, special care was needed in designing thermal paths to keep the detector temperature within its operational range. As a consequence, flight temperatures of the SCD, even at diurnal maximum were kept below 38°C. The SCD mechanical structure was designed to minimize the possibility of damage to the sensors and electronics from the impacts of parachute deployment and landing. The detector was recovered successfully following the flight and is being refurbished for the next flight in 2007. Details of construction, operation, and performance are presented for the dual-layered SCD flown for the second CREAM flight.

The cosmic-ray energetics and mass (CREAM) investigation is designed to measure cosmic-ray composition to the supernova energy scale of 10 15 eV in a series of ultra long duration balloon (ULDB) flights. The first flight is planned to be launched from Antarctica in December 2004. The goal is to observe cosmic-ray spectral features and/or abundance changes that might signify a limit to supernova acceleration. The particle charge ðZÞ measurements will be made with a timing-based charge detector and a pixelated silicon charge detector to minimize the effect of backscatter from the calorimeter. The particle energy measurements will be made with a transition radiation detector (TRD) for Z > 3 and a sampling tungsten/scintillator calorimeter for Z P 1 particles, allowing inflight cross calibration of the two detectors. The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) Ultra Long Duration Balloon (ULDB) mission will investigate ultra high energy (1012 to > 5 × 1014 eV) cosmic rays over the elemental range from protons to iron. The measurements will be made with an instrument that consists of a sampling tungsten/scintillator calorimeter preceded by a graphite target with scintillator layers for trigger and track-reconstruction purposes, a transition radiation detector (TRD) for observing heavy nuclei, and a segmented timing-based particle-charge detector. A key feature of the instrument is its ability to obtain simultaneous measurements of the energy and charge of a subset of nuclei by the complementary calorimeter and TRD techniques, thereby allowing in-flight inter-calibration of their energy scales. The energy extent will depend on a series of ULDB flights of identical instruments: three flights will reach 5 × 1014 eV. The different flights can be carried out at essentially any latitude, including the polar regions of either hemisphere. CREAM will be ready for flight one year after the TIGER (Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder) ULDB demonstration flight, which is currently scheduled for launch in December 2001.

Measurements of the energy spectra of negative electrons and positrons have been performed with the High-Energy Antimatter Telescope (HEAT) in two balloon flights—1994 May from Fort Sumner, NM, and 1995 August from Lynn Lake, Manitoba. We present the combined data set from these two flights, covering the energy range 1-100 GeV. We compare our data with results from other groups and discuss the data in the context of diffusive propagation models. There is some evidence that primary electrons above 10 GeV and cosmic-ray nuclei exhibit the same energy spectrum at the source, but that the source spectrum becomes harder at lower energy. Within the experimental uncertainties, the intensity of positrons is consistent with a purely secondary origin, due to nuclear interactions in interstellar space.

We present data from the second flight of the superconducting magnet instrument for light isotopes (SMILI), which took place on 1991 July 24. This instrument was optimized to determine the isotopic composition of He, Li, Be, and B in the Galactic cosmic rays, up to an energy of 2 GeV amu-1. The abundances of He, Li, and B are found to be consistent with standard models of cosmic-ray propagation. Our measurement of the abundances of the beryllium isotopes suggests an enhancement of the fraction of the isotope 10Be over that found at low energy. Of 26 beryllium events, nine are found to be 10Be. Monte Carlo calculations based on this observation imply the mean lifetime of cosmic rays to be less than 6 Myr at the 97.5% confidence level.

Cosmic rays at the Earth include a secondary component originating in collisions of primary particles with the diffuse interstellar gas. The secondary cosmic rays are relatively rare but carry important information on the Galactic propagation of the primary particles. The secondary component includes a small fraction of antimatter particles, positrons and antiprotons. In addition, positrons and antiprotons may also come from unusual sources and possibly provide insight into new physics. For instance, the annihilation of heavy supersymmetric dark matter particles within the Galactic halo could lead to positrons or antiprotons with distinctive energy signatures. With the High-Energy Antimatter Telescope (HEAT) balloon-borne instrument, we have measured the abundances of positrons and electrons at energies between 1 and 50 GeV. The data suggest that indeed a small additional antimatter component may be present that cannot be explained by a purely secondary production mechanism. The High-Energy Antimatter Telescope (HEAT) balloon cosmic ray detector flew from Fort Sumner, New Mexico on May 3–5, 1994. The instrument measured electron and positron abundances and spectra from ∼1 to 100 GeV at a vertical geomagnetic cutoff rigidity that varied between 4.0 and 4.5 GV. The intensities of electrons and positrons have been measured as a function of atmospheric depth between 3.8 and 7.4 g cm−2 of overburden. At magnetic rigidities below cutoff, the intensity of downward moving e± consists of secondary (spallogenic) particles and the reentrant (or return) albedo. We determine the contribution of the reentrant electron albedo and compare it with earlier measurements and limits at similar geomagnetic cutoff levels. In the range of 1.0–2.4 GeV, the reentrant albedo component amounts to 40% of the total electron intensity observed.

The HEAT (High-Energy Antimatter Telescope) instrument has been developed for a series of observations in cosmic-ray astrophysics that require the use of a superconducting magnet spectrometer. This paper describes the first configuration of HEAT which is optimized for the detection of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons below 100 GeV. In addition to the spectrometer, a combination of time-of-flight scintillators, a transition radiation detector, and an electromagnetic shower counter, provides particle identification, energy measurement, and powerful discrimination against the large background of protons. The instrument was successfully flown aboard high-altitude balloons in 1994 and 1995. The design and construction of the spectrometer and of the detector systems are described, and the performance of the instrument is demonstrated with data obtained in flight.

Two measurements of the cosmic-ray positron fraction as a function of energy have been made using the High Energy Antimatter Telescope (HEAT) balloon-borne instrument. The first flight took place from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico in 1994, and yielded results above the geomagnetic cutoff energy of 4.5 GeV. The second flight from Lynn Lake, Manitoba in 1995 permitted measurements over a larger energy interval, from 1 GeV to 50 GeV. In this letter we present results on the positron fraction based on data from the Lynn Lake flight, and compare these with the previously published results from the Ft. Sumner flight. The results confirm that the positron fraction does not increase with energy above ~10 GeV, although a small excess above purely secondary production cannot be ruled out. At low energies the positron fraction is slightly larger than that reported from measurements made in the 1960's. This effect could possibly be a consequence of charge dependence in the level of solar modulation.

A new detector system for observations of cosmic ray electrons and positrons has been flown on a high altitude balloon in May 1994. The instrumentation includes a superconducting magnet and a drift tube hodoscope for the measurement of particle rigidities, and a combination of transition radiation detectors, shower counters and a time-of-flight system for particle identification and energy measurement. We will discuss the performance of the individual components and demonstrate that a reliable identification of the rare positron component has been achieved up to 50 GeV.

Results from tests characterizing the performance and radiation hardness of the HS9008RH flash analog to digital convertor (FADC) are presented. These tests were performed primarily to evaluate the suitability of this device for use in the GEM Central Tracker at the SSC experiment. Basic performance characteristics and susceptibility of these characteristics to radiation were examined. Performance test results indicate that the device integral nonlinearity is sampling rate dependent and worsens rapidly above a sampling rate of 15 megasamples per second (MSPS). No degradation in performance of the device was observed after its exposure of up to 81 Mrad of 1.25 MeV γ radiation from a 60 Co source. Exposure of the device to a reactor fast neutron fluence ( E > 100 keV) of 5 × 10 14 /cm 2 resulted in no significant observed performance degradation as well.

The energy spectrum of galactic cosmic ray Helium was measured in two different balloon experiments launched four days apart from Canada: SMILI-I on 1-Sept-1989 and MASS on 5-Sept-1989. A slow Forbush decrease began on 4-Sept-1989 and had not reached its maximum at the time of the MASS flight. Comparison of the balloon measurements shows a fractional decrease of 0.37 to 0.15 in the Helium flux between 200 and 450 MeV/nucleon (1.2–2.0 GV). The rigidity dependence is analyzed in two models and found to be steeper than previous observations. Interplanetary particle data and ground-based Neutron Monitor results are consistent with the balloon observations. Probable sources for this Forbush decrease are discussed.

The balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment launched five times from Antarctica has achieved a cumulative flight duration of about 156 days above 99.5% of the atmosphere. The instrument is configured with complementary and redundant particle detectors designed to extend direct measurements of cosmic-ray composition to the highest energies practical with balloon flights. All elements from protons to iron nuclei are separated with excellent charge resolution. Here we report results from the first two flights of ~70 days, which indicate hardening of the elemental spectra above ~200 GeV/nucleon and a spectral difference between the two most abundant species, protons and helium nuclei. These results challenge the view that cosmic-ray spectra are simple power laws below the so-called knee at ~1015 eV. This discrepant hardening may result from a relatively nearby source, or it could represent spectral concavity caused by interactions of cosmic rays with the accelerating shock. We present measurements of the relative abundances of cosmic-ray nuclei in the energy range of 500-3980 GeV/nucleon from the second flight of the Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass balloon-borne experiment. Particle energy was determined using a sampling tungsten/scintillating-fiber calorimeter, while particle charge was identified precisely with a dual-layer silicon charge detector installed for this flight. The resulting element ratios C/O, N/O, Ne/O, Mg/O, Si/O, and Fe/O at the top of atmosphere are 0.919 ? 0.123stat ? 0.030syst, 0.076 ? 0.019stat ? 0.013syst, 0.115 ? 0.031stat ? 0.004syst, 0.153 ? 0.039stat ? 0.005syst, 0.180 ? 0.045stat ? 0.006syst, and 0.139?? 0.043stat ? 0.005syst, respectively, which agree with measurements at lower energies. The source abundance of N/O is found to be 0.054 ? 0.013stat ? 0.009syst+0.010esc ?0.017. The cosmic-ray source abundances are compared to local Galactic (LG) abundances as a function of first ionization potential and as a function of condensation temperature. At high energies the trend that the cosmic-ray source abundances at large ionization potential or low condensation temperature are suppressed compared to their LG abundances continues. Therefore, the injection mechanism must be the same at TeV/nucleon energies as at the lower energies measured by HEAO-3, CRN, and TRACER. Furthermore, the cosmic-ray source abundances are compared to a mixture of 80% solar system abundances and 20% massive stellar outflow (MSO) as a function of atomic mass. The good agreement with TIGER measurements at lower energies confirms the existence of a substantial fraction of MSO material required in the ~TeV per nucleon region.

A measurement of the underground muon decoherence function has been performed using the multiple muon events collected by the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. A detector-independent analysis is presented for different zenith regions and rock depths; this allows direct comparison with any model of hadronic interactions. The measured decoherence function is compared with the predictions of a Monte Carlo simulation based on data taken by recent collider experiments. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

GRACE is a five element array of air Cherenkov light collectors designed to measure the energy of primary cosmic rays and operate on the terrain over the deep underground muon tracking detector, MACRO, at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. The coincidence detection of air Cherenkov photons and deep underground muons produced in extensive air showers will allow an association of the primary energy with the muon events observed underground. We present detailed Monte Carlo calculations of the expected signal, a complete description of our detectors and test results of their initial deployment at the University of Michigan Peach Mountain Observatory.

A spectrophotometer that measures the long attenuation length of mineral oil, typically 20 to 30 m, is described.

The balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment flew for the third time in Antarctica between 19 December 2007 and 16 January 2008. This ∼29-day flight resulted in an accumulation of almost 100 days of exposure for the CREAM payload. The instrument included double layers of finely segmented Silicon detectors and an imaging Cherenkov Camera for charge measurements. A finely segmented tungsten-scintillator fiber ionization calorimeter was used for energy measurements. Energy spectra of cosmic ray particles for 1 ≤ Z ≤26 were measured at the top of atmosphere with excellent charge and energy resolution. CREAM extends direct measurements of cosmic-ray composition to energies where ground-based air shower measurements are possible, thereby providing calibration for those indirect measurements. The use of detectors based on plastic scintillator with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) is common in cosmic-ray experiments to differentiate particle charges. However, in the presence of a calorimeter, the standard method of pulse charge integration over a time longer than a PMT pulse is hampered by abundant albedo particles. The Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass (CREAM) instrument surmounts this problem by measuring the peak voltage of the PMT pulse within ∼ 3 ns of a threshold crossing in the readout of a timing charge detector (TCD). The design and performance of the TCD is presented. A charge resolution of 0.2 e for oxygen and 0.4 e for iron is obtained for through-going cosmic-ray particles.

Sintered Halon G-80, a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resin available commercially in powdered form, is a superb diffuse reflector. Sintered Halon has 96% absolute reflectance at wavelengths between 300 nm and 380 nm, and about 98% absolute reflectance above 380 nm. It is chemically inert, is mechanically strong, does not fluoresce, and the high reflectance is easy to maintain over time. We have used sintered Halon as a lining in light integration boxes of water Cherenkov detectors. Preparation involves packing Halon powder into a mold to a specific density, then heating the material almost to the melting point (sintering). A method of preparing sintered Halon is presented. Physical properties of sintered Halon have been measured and we present those results here as well.

The Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass balloon-borne experiment has been launched twice in Antarctica, first in December 2004 and again in December 2005. It circumnavigated the South Pole three times during the first flight, which set a flight duration record of 42 days. A cumulative duration of 70 days within 13 months was achieved when the second flight completed 28 days during two circumnavigations of the Pole on 13 January 2006. Both the science instrument and support systems functioned extremely well, and a total 117 GB of data including 67 million science events were collected during these two flights. Preliminary analysis indicates that the data extend well above 100 TeV and follow reasonable power laws. The payload recovered from the first flight has been refurbished for the third flight in 2007, whereas the payload from the second flight is being refurbished to be ready for the fourth flight in 2008. Each flight will extend the reach of precise cosmic-ray composition measurements to energies not previously possible.

The balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM-I (Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass) recently completed a successful 42-day flight during the 2004-2005 NASA/NSF/NSBF Antarctic expedition. CREAM-I combines an imaging calorimeter with charge detectors and a precision transition radiation detector (TRD). The TRD component of CREAM-I is targeted at measuring the energy of cosmic-ray particles with charges greater than Z� 3. A central science goal of this effort is the determination of the ratio of secondary to primary nuclei at high energy. This measurement is crucial for the reconstruction of the propagation history of cosmic rays, and consequently for the determination of their source spectra. First scientific results from this instrument are presented.

The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) instrument flew on a high altitude balloon in Antarctica in 2004–2005 for a record breaking 42 days. An array of detectors was deployed to identify cosmic rays and measure their energies up to several hundred TeV. A major science goal is the measurement of secondary nuclei at high energy (produced by spallation reactions of heavier cosmic rays in the interstellar medium). This is done with a transition radiation detector using xenon-filled proportional tubes, and charge identification devices comprising plastic scintillator and Cherenkov counters. Accurate and stable performance of these detectors is necessary for the reliable identification of the secondary nuclei. The design of these detectors and their performance in flight are discussed, and preliminary data presented.
