Abstract

Sediment erosion is a serious issue, with approximately 75 billion tons of soil is eroded annually around the world (Pimentel and Kounang, 1998). Although erosion is a natural process, it can accelerate due to human activity and land use changes. Increasing soil erosion beyond its natural threshold can result in significant environmental degradation and decreased economic productivity. Implementing sediment management laws and practices is critical to significantly decrease soil erosion and preserve environmental resources. In the United States, there is a comprehensive system of laws and regulations at national, state, county, and city level that govern erosion and sediment control. The laws and voluntary incentives outlined in our paper have significantly reduced the negative impacts of sediment carried in urban and storm-generated runoff, have reduced chemical and biological pollutants in sediment transported in aquatic ecosystems, and have improved the air quality in several cities with air pollution problems. Having a multi-faceted approach to monitoring erosion and improving soil management is important for a healthy, productive environment and economy.

Abstract

The mid- and low-latitude ionosphere is home to a variety of plasma density irregularities, including depletions (bubbles), enhancements (blobs), and small-scale scintillation. Previous studies of plasma density enhancements observed using ROCSAT data have posited that these structures are the direct result of the formation of bubbles near the geomagnetic equator. However, more recent observations from the C/NOFS satellite suggest that multiple mechanisms are responsible for forming plasma enhancements, with wave action in the ionosphere and thermosphere as a significant driver of the enhanced densities. Indeed, statistical analysis of enhancements observed from satellites resembles the statistics of Medium-Scale Traveling Ionosphere Disturbances (MSTIDs) with respect to seasonal variability and solar activity. petitSat is a CubeSat mission designed to examine the link between MSTIDs and plasma enhancements. The mission will provide in situ measurements of the plasma density, 3D ion drift, as well as ion and neutral composition. The instrument suite includes a combined retarding potential analyzer and cross-track drift meter and an ion-neutral mass spectrometer. This instrument suite will provide comprehensive information about the fluctuations in plasma, as well as changes in the neutral profile. petitSat will launch into a 51 deg inclination orbit at 400 km (consistent with an International Space Station deployment), allowing for numerous conjunctions with the Boston University All-Sky Imager network over the mission lifetime.

Aunque la erosión es un proceso natural, ésta puede acelerarse debido a la actividad humana y a los cambios en el uso de la tierra. El incremento de la erosión del suelo más allá de su umbral natural puede resultar en una degradación ambiental significativa y una disminución de la productividad económica. La implementación de leyes y prácticas de gestión de sedimentos es fundamental para disminuir significativamente la erosión del suelo y preservar los recursos ambientales. En los Estados Unidos, existe un sistema integral de leyes y regulaciones a nivel nacional, estatal, del condado y de ciudad que gobiernan la erosión y el control de sedimentos. Abstract

We examined ionoregulatory characteristics of two species of characiform fish and two species of cichlids that are not native to the Rio Negro, an extremely ion-poor, acidic tributary of the Amazon River, in order to gain insight into the origin of the specializations possessed by Rio Negro fish. The two characiform species examined, Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and black neon tetras (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi), had high-affinity/high-capacity transporters that produce high rates of uptake in dilute water. Na+ uptake for both was pH insensitive (down to pH 3.5). Exposure to 100 μmol L−1 phenamil had no effect on Na+ uptake in either species, while exposure to 1 mmol L−1 NH4Cl− (high external ammonia [HEA]) slightly stimulated Na+ uptake in Congo tetras. Exposure to “Na+-free” water significantly inhibited Na+ uptake (by 65%–85%) but had no effect on net ammonia flux. Abstract

Phenotypic sex in salmonids is determined primarily by a genetic male heterogametic system; yet, sex reversal can be accomplished via hormonal treatment. In Tasmanian Atlantic salmon aquaculture, to overcome problems associated with early sexual maturation in males, sex-reversed females are crossed with normal females to produce all female stock. However, phenotypic distinction of sex-reversed females (neo-males) from true males is problematic. We set out to identify genetic markers that could make this distinction. Microsatellite markers from chromosome 2 (Ssa02), to which the sex-determining locus (SEX) has been mapped in two Scottish Atlantic salmon families, did not predict sex in a pilot study of seven families. A TaqMan 64 SNP genome-wide scan suggested SEX was on Ssa06 in these families, and this was confirmed by microsatellite markers. A survey of 58 families in total representing 38 male lineages in the SALTAS breeding program found that 34 of the families had SEX on Ssa02, in 22 of the families SEX was on Ssa06, and two of the families had a third SEX locus, on Ssa03. A PCR test using primers designed from the recently published sdY gene is consistent with Tasmanian Atlantic salmon having a single sex-determining gene that may be located on at least three linkage groups.

Abstract

Previous observations have shown that pulsating aurora sometimes occurs with patches of a vertical extent that is thinner than would be expected for aurora caused by collisional processes, implying that local ionospheric processes are important in causing the narrow luminosity enhancement. However, Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) data from four pulsating aurora events, during the Rocket Observations of Pulsating Aurora (ROPA) mission in January and February 2007, show that the electron density profile associated with the pulsating patches had a thickness of ∼ 15 – 25 km in all four cases and that, therefore, these are not examples of such thin enhancements. A numerical model of the associated volume emission rates for the night of the ROPA launch supports this conclusion. In the process of modeling the volume emission rates, the PFISR data are inverted to calculate the associated electron energy distribution for comparison with in situ electron measurements from ROPA and the REIMEI satellite. The modeled distribution shows a diffuse plasma sheet population which gradually decreases in energy over the course of the event, resulting in ∼ 6 – 8 keV precipitation by the end of the PFISR data interval, in agreement with the ROPA/REIMEI measurements.

Abstract

Oncogene-induced senescence is a mechanism of tumor suppression that restricts the progression of benign tumors. Important advances have been made toward elucidating the mechanisms that regulate this response; however, there is presently no unified model that integrates all current findings. DNA damage, replicative stress, reactive oxygen species, heterochromatin formation and negative feedback signaling networks have all been proposed to play an integral role in promoting senescence in response to various oncogenic insults. In all cases, these signals have been shown to function through Rb and p53, but utilize different intermediaries. Thus, it appears that senescence is not triggered by a single, linear series of events, but instead is regulated by a complex signaling network. Accordingly, multiple proteins may cooperate to establish a senescence response, but the limiting signal(s) may be dictated by the initiating genetic alteration and/or tissue type. This review will focus on integrating current models and will highlight data that provide new insight into the signals that function to suppress human tumor development.

Abstract

In exploiting the unique capabilities of smart actuators for applications in vehicle systems, even in unmanned or micro aerial vehicles, the power issues for smart actuators and devices have not been well addressed. This is due to the fact that the driving power for smart materials has not reached the level of the power specifications for conventional devices and systems. To answer the power issue, we have developed a wireless power transmission technology using a flexible rectenna system and implemented it for a microwave-powered aerial vehicle (MPAV) system. For this application, two flexible dipole rectennas were designed, manufactured and characterized over a frequency range of 9–12 GHz. These flexible dipole rectennas were attached and tested on the complex structure of small MPAVs. The maximum converted power output of a flexible dipole rectenna array was about 300 mA at 80 VDC. The power output from this rectenna was sufficient to run the propellers of the MPAV. Each electrically driven propeller requires approximately 2 W for operation.

The concept of power transmission by a microwave is envisioned as the best option for alleviating the complexity associated with hard-wired control circuitry in controlling smart actuators and robots such as micro-aerial vehicles, biomimetic robots and space vehicles to produce remotely maneuverable capability. A flexible dipole rectenna array is conformably adaptable on the complex structure of vehicles used for practical applications of wireless power. For these applications, various flexible dipole rectennas and arrays were designed, fabricated and characterized over a frequency range of 9–12 GHz with 20 W and 200 W amplifiers through laboratory testing. The irradiance of the microwave power was measured. Also the irradiated power, the output power and the efficiency of the rectenna arrays were evaluated along with the microwave power and frequency. The maximum voltage of 65 VDC was observed from a series connected dipole rectenna array and the maximum current of 2.50 mA was obtained from a parallel connected rectenna array. The efficiency of dipole rectenna arrays ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the input power and the pole configuration. It was also demonstrated that the voltage, current and power output from a dipole rectenna array can be tailored by configuring the dipole rectenna elements in serial and parallel mode connections.

Abstract

Frozen-in viscoelasticity has a significant, yet previously overlooked, impact on the refractive index profile of optical fibers and can serve as the basis for novel fiber devices. Viscoelastic strains can be frozen into an optical fiber during draw, or by cooling down a drawn fiber from high temperature while under tension. The resulting refractive index perturbation can exceed 0.003, exhibits minimal birefringence, and is concentrated in the highest viscosity region of the fiber. We have developed a quantitative theory for the refractive index perturbation, which is in excellent agreement with measured data. We have harnessed frozen-in viscoelasticity to create novel high-performance all-fiber beam expanders achieving mode field diameters in excess of 40 /spl mu/m. These beam expanders are suitable for low-cost high-volume manufacturing and can serve as the basis for high-power single-mode fiber (SMF) connectors, since their lower power density improves reliability during high-power operation. Because of the significant reduction in free-space diffraction associated with the enlarged mode field diameter, these beam expanders may be suitable for MEMS applications, or for coupling between optical fiber terminations and optical fiber sources or detectors.

Abstract

There is a growing interest in patients' perspectives in relation to the treatment and management of mentally disordered offenders at all levels of service delivery. This paper reports on a group of mentally ill individuals who were admitted to a place of safety following detention by the police. The principal purpose of the study was to determine the quality of care that the patient experienced under section 136 of the Mental Health Act (1983) from police detention to hospital admission. The major focus concerned the anticipated disparity between the non-professional police interactions and those of the mental health professional. The method employed was a grounded theory analysis of audio-taped interviews utilizing a three-level coding of data. The results indicated a general dissatisfaction with the quality of care and treatment from both police and professionals, but with the former being viewed as acceptable whilst the latter was considered unacceptable. The patients made a series of recommendations for detention in places of safety.

Abstract

Degradation of ZnS and Y2O2S cathodoluminescent (CL) phosphors has been studied at 1–4 keV using Auger electron spectroscopy simultaneous with CL. The data are consistent with an electron stimulated surface chemical reaction (ESSCR) which led to destruction of ZnS and formation of a surface nonluminescent ZnO layer as well as injection of oxygen point defects into the near-surface region. In the case of Y2O2S:Eu, the electron beam stimulated removal of S and formation of Y2O3:Eu in the presence of 1×10−6 Torr of oxygen. A model is presented which predicts that degradation by the ESSCR should increase with pressure in the vacuum, depend exponentially on electron dose, increase as the primary beam energy was reduced below 4 keV, and depend upon the type of gas present in the vacuum. These trends were demonstrated from the experimental data.

Abstract

To obtain information useful to asthma care in a relatively poor, high asthma prevalence population, a focus group study was undertaken with 72 parents of children with asthma or recurrent wheezing. There was a reasonable level of understanding of the causes of asthma, although variable acceptance of the diagnosis. Willingness to undertake home management of acute episodes and environmental control measures was high. Reported treatment was characterized by reliance on syrups, use of home remedies, resistance to inhaled therapy, and relatively low compliance with prescribed treatment. There was agreement on the poor level of service offered by doctors and public sector clinics. Asthma education in this population needs to build on what parents know and accept, but stress the relative safety of inhaled therapy, the need for maintenance therapy, and the value of pre-exercise prophylaxis, house dust mite control, and smoking cessation. There is an urgent need to improve the quality of asthma care provided by public sector clinics.

The effects of electron bombardment in 10−6 Torr CO or CO2 upon the surface composition of ZnS thin films was determined with Auger electron spectroscopy. The ZnS surface composition was stable in 1×10−9 Torr residual vacuum or for CO and CO2 exposures without electron bombardment. With electron bombardment and CO both present, C was deposited and S decreased, but no O accumulated on the surface. This was interpreted as an electron beam stimulated surface reaction in which CO was dissociated by the electron beam CO2 was reformed leaving C on the surface. For CO2, both C and O were increased on the surface while S was reduced. This was interpreted as a surface reaction involving dissociation of CO2 with reformation of COx leaving both C and O on the surface. The data suggest that the surface dissociation of CO2 did not occur when the sample temperature was increased from 30 °C to 150–200 °C. At 300 °C, S diffused from the ZnS substrate to the surface. Abstract

Periodic microbend losses in single-mode optical fibers are modeled here by using the finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM). To reduce computational demands, the sinusoidal microbending deformation is approximated as a series of constant curvature bends of alternating sign. The spectral sensitivity is determined by performing calculations over the wavelength range 1170–1450 nm. Results obtained display the distinct attenuation bands which are typical of this form of induced loss. Comparison with experimental results taken from a previous study suggests that the FD-BPM provides a useful strategy for predicting the spectral attenuation in single-mode optical fibers.

Abstract

Europium-activated yttrium oxide (Eu:Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}) phosphor films have been grown in situ on (100) bare silicon and diamond-coated silicon substrates using a pulsed laser deposition technique. Diamond-coated silicon substrates were prepared by hot filament chemical vapor deposition onto (100) silicon wafers. Measurements of photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties of Eu:Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} films have shown that the films grown on diamond-coated silicon substrates are brighter than the films grown on bare silicon substrates under identical deposition conditions. The improved brightness of the Eu:Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} films on diamond-coated silicon substrates is attributed to reduced internal reflection, low photon energy absorption by substrate, and enhanced scattering of incident beam with lattice. All these effects are primarily brought about by the presence of a rough diamond interfacial layer between the phosphor films and substrates.

Abstract

We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract

Phosphor powder of ZnS:Cu,Al,Au has been subjected to electron bombardment (2 keV, 2 mA/cm2) in residual gas pressures ranging from 0.6×10−8 to 7.0×10−8 Torr. Auger electron spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence (CL), both excited by the same electron beam, were used to monitor changes in the surface chemistry and cathodoluminescent brightness versus vacuum conditions during electron bombardment. A direct correlation between the surface reactions and the degradation of CL brightness was observed. The formation of a nonluminescent ZnO layer on the surface of the phosphor was largely responsible for the degradation of the ZnS. The aging of the phosphor was not only a function of the charge per unit area (Coulomb dose) bombarding the surface, but also a function of residual gas pressure and composition. In particular, H2O had the greatest effect on the rate of degradation. The results are interpreted in terms of an electron-beam stimulated surface chemical reaction.

Abstract

Chiropractic services are commonly used by workers with musculoskeletal problems, especially low back and neck complaints. Research into the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this approach is, however, difficult to design without prior pilot studies. This study followed 32 workers with these complaints attending one such service and used five measures of outcome over a 6-month period. These measured pain (VAS), disability (FLP), quality of life (SF-36), perceived benefit and satisfaction with care. Additionally, sickness costs to the companies were recorded over two years encompassing the study period. Treatment utilization was also monitored. Over half the population were chronic sufferers. The effect sizes were large for pain and for seven out of eight dimensions of the SF-36 questionnaire at 6-month follow-up, although not for disability (FLP). High levels of satisfaction and perceived improvement were reported and sickness costs to the companies fell. However, the sample size in this pilot study was small and did not include controls. We would, therefore, recommend a full cost-effectiveness study incorporating a randomized trial in this area.

Abstract

Using data collected in the region of the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the CLEO-II detector, they report on the first observation of exclusive decays of the B meson to final states with a charmed baryon. They have measured the branching fractions {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup -}) = (0.62{sub -0.20}{sup +0.23} {+-} 0.11 {+-} 0.10) x 10{sup -3} and {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (1.33{sub -0.42}{sup +0.46} {+-} 0.31 {+-} 0.21) x 10{sup -3}. In addition, they report upper limits for final states of the form {bar B} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}) and {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}){pi}{sup 0} where (n{pi}) denotes up to four charged pions.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of {Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}, making the first observation of {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}. Abstract

Phosphor thin films of ZnS:Mn on Si(100) have been subject to electron bombardment (0.6–4 keV) over a range of pressures from 1×10−6 to 5×10−8 Torr. Various gases including hydrogen, oxygen, and water vapor were introduced into the ambient during bombardment, to assess their effects on the phosphor surface. Auger electron spectroscopy data indicate that electron bombardment in the presence of O2 and H2O caused depletion of sulfur and accumulation of oxygen on the surface. Hydrogen also caused depletion of sulfur. Removal of sulfur was shown to be consistent with electron-beam dissociation of molecular species to atomic hydrogen and/or oxygen, followed by a surface reaction to form high vapor pressure sulfur compounds (e.g., SOx and H2S). In the case of oxygen and water vapor, ZnS was converted to ZnO or ZnSO4. These changes in surface chemistry reduced the intensity of cathodoluminescence from ZnS-based phosphors. The mechanisms leading to loss of CL intensity are discussed.

Abstract

Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R{sub chrg} for the mean charged multiplicity observed in {Upsilon}(1S){r_arrow}gg{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}. We find R{sub chrg}{equivalent_to}{l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}/{l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}=1.04 {plus_minus}0.02(stat){plus_minus}0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

We have searched for the decays $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in a sample of $2.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays collected with the CLEO II detector. In the muon channel, we observe no candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma})l5.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level. In the electron channel, we observe five candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma})l2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We have measured the spectral shape Michel parameters ρ and η using leptonic decays of the τ, recorded by the CLEO II detector. Assuming e-μ universality in the vectorlike couplings, we find ρeμ = 0.735 ± 0.013 ± 0.008 and ηeμ = -0.015 ± 0.061 ± 0.062, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also present measurements for the parameters for e and μ final states separately.

Abstract

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report evidence of a pair of excited charmed baryons, one decaying into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +} and the other into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}. The doubly charged state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 234.5{plus_minus}1.1{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 17.9{sup +3.8}{sub -3.2}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}, and the neutral state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 232.6{plus_minus}1.0{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 13.0{sup +3.7}{sub -3.0}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}. Abstract

Using data collected on the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance and the nearby continuum by the CLEO-II detector, we have studied combinations of baryons with leptons produced in the process $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B\overline{B}$, $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{lepton}+X$, $\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{baryon}+X$. Our results do not support models which attribute the bulk of ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}$ production in $\overline{B}$ decay to the process $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{cW}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{,W}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{c}s$.

Abstract

The first deep blank-field 450um map (1-sigma~1.3mJy) from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS), conducted with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) is presented. Our map covers 140 arcmin^2 of the COSMOS field, in the footprint of the HST CANDELS area. Using 60 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) detected at >3.75-sigma, we evaluate the number counts of 450um-selected galaxies with flux densities S_450>5mJy. The 8-arcsec JCMT beam and high sensitivity of SCUBA-2 now make it possible to directly resolve a larger fraction of the cosmic infrared background (CIB, peaking at ~200um) into the individual galaxies responsible for its emission than has previously been possible at this wavelength. At S_450>5mJy we resolve (7.4[+/-]0.7)x10^-2 MJy/sr of the CIB at 450um (equivalent to 16[+/-]7% of the absolute brightness measured by COBE at this wavelength) into point sources. A further ~40% of the CIB can be recovered through a statistical stack of 24um emitters in this field, indicating that the majority (~60%) of the CIB at 450um is emitted by galaxies with S_450>2mJy. The average redshift of 450um emitters identified with an optical/near-infrared counterpart is estimated to be =1.3, implying that the galaxies in the sample are in the ultraluminous class (L_IR~1.1x10^12 L_sun). If the galaxies contributing to the statistical stack lie at similar redshifts, then the majority of the CIB at 450um is emitted by galaxies in the LIRG class with L_IR>3.6x10^11 L_sun., 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

CLEO has studied $B$ decays to $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, and $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, where $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}eor\ensuremath{\mu}$, by incorporating the missing momentum into full $B$ reconstruction. With the ${B}^{0}$ and ${B}^{+}$ modes combined according to isospin predictions for the relative partial widths, we obtain $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(2.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.5}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic, and the estimated model dependence. Abstract

We use data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) to search for B{sup +} {yields} h{sup +}h{sup -}h{sup +} (non-resonant) decays, where h{sup {+-}} can be either {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} or p({bar p}). We see no evidence for signals and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (2.8 - 8.9) x 10{sup -5}. If observed, these decays may display CP violating asymmetries.

Abstract

Using data taken with the CLEO II detector, we have studied the decays of the ${D}^{0}$ to ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, ${K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0}$, ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}$, ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$. We present significantly improved results for $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}})=(0.454\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.028\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.035)%$, $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0})=(0.054\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010)%$, and $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0})=(0.074\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.015)%$, where the first errors are statistical and the second errors are the estimate of our systematic uncertainty. We also present a new upper limit $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})l0.059%$ at the 90% confidence level and the first measurement of $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})=(0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04)%$.

Abstract

Using the angular correlation between the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ emitted in a ${D}^{*+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ decay and the ${e}^{+}$ emitted in the subsequent ${D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu}$ decay, we have measured the branching fraction for the inclusive semielectronic decay of the ${D}^{0}$ meson to be $\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})=[6.64\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.29(\mathrm{syst})]%$. The measurement uses 1.7 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collisions recorded by the CLEO II detector located at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). Combining this result with previous CLEO results we find $\frac{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})}{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})}=1.684\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.056(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.093(\mathrm{syst})$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})}{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})}=0.581\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.023(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.028(\mathrm{syst})$. The difference between this inclusive rate and the sum of the measured exclusive branching fractions (measured at CLEO and other experiments) is also presented.

Abstract

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, they report the first observation of an excited charmed baryon decaying into {Xi}{sub c}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}. The state has mass difference M({Xi}{sub c}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}) = M({Xi}{sub c}{sup 0}) of 174.3 {+-} 0.5 {+-} 1.0 MeV/c{sup 2}, and a width of < 3.1 MeV/c{sup 2} (90% confidence level limit). They identify the new state as the {Xi}*{sub c}{sup +}, the isospin partner of the recently discovered {Xi}*{sub c}{sup 0}.
