Understanding the movement ecology of marine species and connectivity of populations is required for effective fisheries management. This is especially the case for species with wide-ranging distributions for which movement can span across several jurisdictions with different management regulations. We used the Australian national network of acoustic receivers facilitated by the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) to describe the extent and frequency of movements for two large epipelagic shark species, the bronze whaler (Carcharhinus brachyurus) and dusky shark (Carcharhinus obscurus). A total of 210 sharks (117 bronze whalers and 93 dusky sharks) were tracked for a 10-year period during which 21% and 9% of detected bronze whalers and dusky sharks, respectively, moved between Australian states. Bronze whalers showed more variable inter-state movements, mostly between Western Australia and South Australia but also eastwards to New South Wales (NSW). Although no dusky sharks tagged in Western Australia undertook inter-state movements, ∼50% of the sharks tagged in South Australia went to Western Australia. Five of the 14 dusky sharks tagged in NSW (36%) were detected across different states but remained on the east and southeast coasts (Queensland, NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania). The IMOS receivers also detected six bronze whalers in Ningaloo Reef, representing an extension of the previously known Australian distribution. Our findings highlight the value of collaboration between researchers and the value of national infrastructure, by providing a more accurate understanding of inter-state movements. This new information will allow the development of more adequate population dynamic models for stock assessment and management advice, requiring collaboration among state agencies for coordinating research activities, sharing data and resources, and establishing appropriate cross-jurisdictional policies. This is essential to achieve successful management and conservation outcomes for highly migratory species.

Understanding migration dynamics of fishes that aggregate-spawn is critical if spatiotemporal closures to fishing are expected to protect them. Concern over fishing of Chrysophrys auratus spawning aggregations in embayments near a west Australian city led to an annual 4-month spatial fishing closure. However, the extent to which it protects fish migrating to and from aggregations is unclear. Acoustic telemetry demonstrated a bimodal pattern of entry to and departure from the main embayment via only one of several pathways. Among years, 33%–56% of fish occurred in the pathway prior to the closure, but most left before it ceased. Fish were detected within the closure in multiple but not always consecutive years. Variation in migration timing and aggregation philopatry may alter capture risk, but pre- and postspawning migratory fish are fished in the main pathway and adjacent reefs, which would presumably impact spawning aggregation biomass. Assessment of this would assist in understanding whether expansion of the closure’s spatial and temporal limits is necessary to ensure spawning biomass or whether current management is sufficient.

Complementary methods of otolith element analysis (IRMS of stable isotopes and laser ablation ICP-MS of trace elements) were used to elucidate the stock structures in Western Australia of the exploited demersal West Australian dhufish Glaucosoma hebraicum and Snapper Pagrus auratus. Residency of adults during their most recent part of life and the existence of important nursery locations were investigated by analysing otolith margins and cores, respectively, to evaluate the applicability of current spatial management. Stable oxygen isotope ratios (18O/16O) in both margins and cores of G. hebraicum otoliths increased with latitude and thus decreasing mean annual water temperature. Analyses of δ18O, stable isotope composition (SI; δ18O, δ13C) and trace element composition (TE; 25Mg, 88Sr, 138Ba) in otolith margins of G. hebraicum from four management areas on the west coast of Australia indicated that adults were resident in each area. Analyses of elements in otolith cores demonstrated that, by the early juvenile stage (< 1 year old), individuals will have recruited to the area where they will remain as adults. Analyses of δ18O and both SI and TE compositions in otolith margins of adult P. auratus indicated residency within each of three large bioregions (Gascoyne, GCB; West, WCB; South, SCB) along the west and south coasts of western Australia. As for G. hebraicum, the data also demonstrated residency at the finer scale, i.e. within the four management areas on the west coast. The lack of a conspicuous pattern in δ18O levels in P. auratus otolith cores implied that adults in each area recruited from a range of nurseries. Although both SI and TE composition demonstrated that there was substantial self-recruitment within the WCB and SCB and within two of the four areas of the WCB, stock(s) of P. auratus at the southern extent of the GCB are likely to be partially reliant on immigration. Elemental signatures in otoliths of G. hebraicum and P. auratus demonstrated that adults in each management area of the WCB could be treated as separate stocks. However, while recruitment of juvenile G. hebraicum to adult stocks would occur primarily from adjacent multiple nurseries within areas of the WCB, adult P. auratus in any one bioregion and at least two of the four areas within the WCB were derived from a range of nurseries, including across area and bioregion boundaries.

A rapid and cost-effective assessment was required to provide advice to management on the connectivity between juvenile and adult life cycle stages of Baldchin Groper Choerodon rubescens, a labrid endemic to the west coast of Australia, which has high social value, but relatively low commercial fishery importance. To minimise costs we used laser ablation ICP-MS to analyse levels of a small suite of elements (Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn, Sr, Rb, Ba and Pb) at the margin (adult phase) and core (juvenile phase) of the same otoliths of adult C. rubescens, collected at ten locations in five management zones. The elemental composition of both otolith margins and cores differed significantly among management zones and in some cases among locations within zones. Similarity of the pattern of among-zone elemental composition in otolith margins and cores indicated that, when cores are laid down, individuals have already recruited to the zones they will occupy as adults and there is no evidence of discrete juvenile nurseries. Thus, movement of juvenile or adult C. rubescens is likely to occur at relatively small spatial scales. Monitoring and management of adult stocks at the management zone level may be appropriate to sustain stocks broadly, but may not detect more localised depletion. Methods of elemental analyses are discussed and costs and benefits of this study vs an equivalent tagging study were compared.

The hospital-wide pooling and sharing of certain types of medical equipment can lead to both significant improvements in patient safety and financial advantages when compared with a department or ward-level equipment ownership system. In September 2003, a Medical Equipment Loan Service (MELS) was established, focusing initially on infusion pumps. The aims and expected benefits included; improving availability of equipment for both patients and clinical users, managing and reducing clinical risk, reducing equipment diversity, improving equipment management and reducing the overall cost of equipment provision. A user survey was carried out in 2005 and repeated in 2011. The results showed wide and continued satisfaction with the service. The process and difficulties of establishing the service and its development to include additional types of equipment are described. The benefits of managing medical equipment which is in widespread general use, through a MELS as part of a Clinical Engineering Department, are presented.

Citizen science offers a potentially cost-effective way for researchers to obtain large data sets over large spatial scales. However, it is not used widely to support biological data collection for fisheries stock assessments. Overfishing of demersal fishes along 1,000 km of the west Australian coast led to restrictive management to recover stocks. This diminished opportunities for scientists to cost-effectively monitor stock recovery via fishery-dependent sampling, particularly of the recreational fishing sector. As fishery-independent methods would be too expensive and logistically-challenging to implement, a citizen science program, Send us your skeletons (SUYS), was developed. SUYS asks recreational fishers to voluntarily donate fish skeletons of important species from their catch to allow biological data extraction by scientists to produce age structures and conduct stock assessment analyses. During SUYS, recreational fisher involvement, sample sizes and spatial and temporal coverage of samples have dramatically increased, while the collection cost per skeleton has declined substantially. SUYS is ensuring sampling objectives for stock assessments are achieved via fishery-dependent collection and reliable and timely scientific advice can be provided to managers. The program is also encouraging public ownership through involvement in the monitoring process, which can lead to greater acceptance of management decisions.

Movements of 89 acoustically tagged subadult and adult white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) were monitored off the south and west coasts of Western Australia (WA) between December 2008 and May 2016 by a network of up to 343 passive acoustic receivers. In all, 290 inter-regional movements, totalling 185092km were recorded for 73 of these sharks. Estimated rates of movement in excess of 3kmh–1 (mean 1.7kmh–1; maximum 5.6kmh–1) were common, even over distances of thousands of kilometres. Detections indicated that white sharks may be present off most of the south and lower west coasts of WA throughout the year, although they are more likely to be encountered during spring and early summer and are least likely to be present during late summer and autumn. There was limited evidence of predictable return behaviour, seasonal movement patterns or coordination of the direction and timing of individual shark’s movements. Nevertheless, the data suggest that further analyses of movements in relation to ecological factors may be useful predictors of shark activity at local scales. It is hoped that these data may be useful for informing public safety initiatives aimed at mitigating the risks associated with human encounters with white sharks off the WA coast.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infects cells by sequential processes involving attachment, fusion with the cell membrane, and penetration of the capsid. We used two monoclonal anti-idiotype that mimic one of the CMV envelope glycoproteins, gp86, to study its role in the early phases of CMV infection. Neither of two such antibodies inhibited virus binding to human embryonic lung (HEL) fibroblasts; however, both antibodies inhibited the fusion of CMV with HEL cells, as measured by an assay in which viral envelope is labeled with a fluorescent amphiphile (octadecyl rhodamine B chloride, or R18), resulting in increased fluorescence during fusion of virus with the cell membrane. Because these anti-idiotype antibodies were shown previously to bind to specific receptors on HEL cell membranes, these findings suggest that both gp86 and its cell membrane receptor may function in the fusion of human CMV with HEL cells.

Although the frequencies of renal and pancreas allograft transplantation are disparate, many of the questions concerning CMV and optimal patient management are the same. Risk factors for cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in kidney and pancreas transplant patients include serologic mismatch and high-level immunosuppression; bladder drainage of pancreas allografts also appears to increase the rates of CMV reactivation and of urinary tract infections. Additionally, reduced allograft survival has been documented in patients with active CMV infection, via both direct and indirect effects. Prevention of CMV replication and disease is therefore an important aspect of management of both patient populations, and studies of CMV prophylaxis in these patient groups are discussed.

The etiology of interstitial cystitis is unknown. Urine from patients with interstitial cystitis has been shown to inhibit urothelial proliferation through a putative antiproliferative factor and to contain decreased levels of heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) compared to controls. Stretch of detrusor smooth muscle cells is known to stimulate HB-EGF production. Because bladder hydrodistention sometimes alleviates the symptoms of interstitial cystitis, we determined whether the stretch stimulus of hydrodistention alters antiproliferative factor activity and/or HB-EGF in interstitial cystitis urine specimens.Urine was collected immediately before, and 2 to 4 hours and 2 weeks after hydrodistention from 15 patients with symptoms and cystoscopic findings compatible with interstitial cystitis and 13 controls. Hydrodistention was performed with the subject under general or regional anesthesia and bladders were distended to 80 cm. water 3 times. Urinary HB-EGF was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and urinary antiproliferative factor activity was determined by measuring 3H-thymidine uptake by normal human bladder urothelial cells.Hydrodistention significantly increased urinary HB-EGF in patients with interstitial cystitis toward normal control values (before distention p = 0.003, 2 weeks after distention p = 0.67). Urine antiproliferative factor activity decreased significantly after hydrodistention in patients with interstitial cystitis. However, antiproliferative factor activity in interstitial cystitis and control specimens was still statistically different 2 weeks after distention (before distention p = 0.0000004, 2 weeks after distention p = 0.04).Bladder stretch increased HB-EGF and conversely reduced antiproliferative factor activity in urine from patients with interstitial cystitis but not controls up to 2 weeks after distention. These results provide additional evidence for the possible role of antiproliferative factor and decreased HB-EGF in the pathophysiology of interstitial cystitis. To our knowledge this is also the first human study to show that in vivo bladder stretch can alter urinary factors that regulate cell growth.

The etiology of interstitial cystitis is unknown. We previously identified an interstitial cystitis urine factor, antiproliferative factor, that inhibits proliferation of bladder epithelial cells in vitro and complex changes in epithelial growth factor levels, including profound decreases in heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF). Bladder and renal pelvic catheterization of patients with interstitial cystitis indicated that the antiproliferative factor is made and/or activated in the distal ureter or bladder. Therefore, we determined whether bladder epithelial cells from interstitial cystitis cases produced the antiproliferative factor and whether purified antiproliferative factor could alter production of growth factors known to be abnormal in interstitial cystitis.Antiproliferative factor activity was determined by 3H-thymidine incorporation into primary bladder epithelial cells. The antiproliferative factor was purified by size fractionation followed by sequential chromatography involving ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction and high performance liquid chromatography. HB-EGF, epidermal growth factor, insulin-like growth factor and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Bladder epithelial cells from patients with interstitial cystitis produced a single antiproliferative factor with the same purification profile as that purified from interstitial cystitis urine. Purified antiproliferative factor specifically inhibited HB-EGF production by bladder epithelial cells in vitro, and the effect of interstitial cystitis urine or purified antiproliferative factor on bladder cell proliferation was inhibited by recombinant human HB-EGF in a dose dependent manner. Similar to urine HB-EGF, serum HB-EGF was also significantly lower in interstitial cystitis cases than in controls.Bladder epithelial abnormalities in interstitial cystitis may be caused by a negative autocrine growth factor that inhibits cell proliferation by down-regulating HB-EGF production. Furthermore, decreased levels of urine and serum HB-EGF indicate that interstitial cystitis may be a urinary tract manifestation of a systemic disorder.

1. The number of kidney transplants performed at the University of Maryland increased yearly from 51 in 1991 to 285 in 1998. Over the past 3 years, the increase in the number of kidney transplants can be ascribed almost exclusively to a marked increase in living donor transplants, from 49 cases in 1995 to 130 cases in 1998; a 160% increase. The increase in our frequency of living-donor kidney transplantation can be attributed to a formal family education program and the availability of the laparoscopic technique for kidney removal. 2. In addition to the availability of the laparoscopic technique, a number of special programs has allowed an increased number of living donor kidney transplants. This includes a special protocol for transplantation of Epstein-Barr virus negative recipients, a protocol for transplantation of patients who have a positive crossmatch with a living donor, as well as, the simultaneous living donor kidney/cadaver pancreas "SPK(LRD/PTA)" program. 3. The one-year graft and patient survival for the entire program was 87.0% and 94.5%, respectively. However, the more recent graft survival rates have markedly increased; Since August 1995, the one-year graft and patient survival was 89.8% and 95.8%, respectively. 4. Improvement in immunosuppression has lead to dramatic improvement in the success rates in living-donor kidney transplants. Despite the omission of antibody-based induction therapy, the one-year graft survival rate using a mycophenolate mofetil/tacrolimus-based immunosuppression protocol was 96.4%. The one-year rejection rate was 8% in Caucasian patients and 14% in African-American patients in this subgroup of living-donor kidney transplant recipients. 5. The data demonstrate that the use of the living-donor transplant option is grossly underutilized. Estimates are presented that more than 11,000 living-donor kidney transplants should be possible in the US yearly.

To determine whether an antiproliferative urine factor that we previously discovered to be specific for urine from interstitial cystitis (IC) patients originated in the lower urinary tract or a more proximal site.Sequential catheterized urine specimens were collected under sterile conditions from the bladder and renal pelvis of 20 IC patients and one control patient (with stress incontinence). Antiproliferative activity was determined by 3H-thymidine incorporation of primary normal adult bladder epithelial cells cultured with pH- and osmolality-corrected bladder or ureteral urine specimens; significant inhibition was defined as a change in 3H-thymidine incorporation greater than 2 standard deviations from the mean of control cells.Bladder urine specimens from 19 of 20 IC patients significantly inhibited 3H-thymidine incorporation as compared to cell medium alone (mean change for bladder specimens = -68.7+/-7.5%), while a renal pelvic specimen from only 1 of 20 IC patients inhibited proliferation significantly (mean change for renal pelvic specimens = 3.2+/-3.4%) (p.001 by Fisher's exact test). The one inhibitory IC renal pelvic specimen inhibited by 31% while a bladder specimen obtained during the same procedure inhibited by 94%. In comparison, neither bladder nor renal pelvic urine from the control patient had inhibitory activity.The antiproliferative factor previously found in the urine of IC patients appears to be made and/or activated in the distal ureter or urinary bladder.

Gram-positive organisms, including vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), have emerged as major pathogens on the organ transplant service at our institution. We hypothesized that our use of vancomycin as part of routine surgical prophylaxis increased the risk of VRE colonization and infection; conversely, there was concern that failure to use vancomycin prophylaxis would increase peri-operative morbidity due to gram-positive organisms.Renal transplant recipients (n = 88) were randomized to receive either a) vancomycin/ceftriaxone or b) cefazolin; and pancreas transplants (n = 24) to receive either a) vancomycin/gentamicin or b) cefazolin/gentamicin. Stool samples or rectal swabs were obtained for culture for enterococci within 24 h of transplantation and weekly while hospitalized.Enterococci were isolated on stool culture from 38 (34%) of 102 patients at the time of transplantation; 4 (11%) of the isolates were VRE. The percentage of patients who subsequently acquired VRE was low (1-7% per wk) but remained constant during hospitalization. There was no association between new VRE detection and vancomycin use for either prophylactic or therapeutic purposes. Forty-four patients (39%) had a post-operative infection with 46% of these infections due to gram-positive organisms; rates were unaffected by prophylactic vancomycin use. Pancreas transplant patients who did not receive vancomycin prophylaxis had a significantly longer initial hospitalization (p = 0.03); however, differences were not statistically significant when total length of stay (LOS) within the first 90 d of transplantation was compared.Vancomycin surgical prophylaxis does not appear to have an effect on VRE colonization or infection, or on rates of infection with gram-positive bacteria. Elimination of vancomycin prophylaxis in renal transplant patients may be a reasonable part of an overall program to limit vancomycin usage, although as a single measure, its impact may be minimal. Vancomycin surgical prophylaxis may be of greater importance in pancreas transplants.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic bladder disease characterized by distinct bladder mucosal abnormalities, for which the etiology is unknown. Although the epidemiology of this disorder is similar to that of bacterial cystitis, prospective studies using sensitive culture techniques and polymerase chain reaction assay for a variety of microorganisms have failed to identify a specific infectious etiology for IC. We have identified a low-molecular-weight peptide in the urine of IC patients that inhibits the proliferation of normal bladder epithelial cells in vitro. We therefore propose a model of IC, in which this peptide inhibits bladder epithelial regeneration following damage (such as that caused by bacterial cystitis). The chronically damaged epithelium is prone to colonization with various microorganisms, and the resulting exposure to these microorganisms, other urinary antigens, and/or damaged epithelial cells prompts the low-level inflammatory response commonly seen in this disorder.

The risk associated with transplantation of renal allografts from hepatitis B virus core antibody-positive (HBcAb(+)), hepatitis B virus surface antigen-negative (HBsAg(-)) donors is not well defined.Over 4 years, we performed 45 kidney transplants from IgG HBcAb(+), IgM HBcAb(-), HBsAg(-) donors into recipients with a history of prior hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection or reported vaccination. We examined HBV-related outcomes in these 45 patients, in comparison with 45 recipients of allografts from HBcAb(-) donors (matched for transplant type, date, and pretransplant HBV antibodies). We sought evidence for HBV transmission by testing posttransplant sera for the presence of HBcAb, hepatitis B virus surface antibody, and HBsAg. Additionally, we analyzed alanine aminotransferase profiles and allograft survival rates for all patients.No patient receiving an allograft from an HBcAb(+) donor developed clinical HBV infection. No patient receiving an allograft from an HBcAb(+) donor had HBsAg detected through retrospective testing of stored sera or through prospective routine clinical evaluation and care. However, among the HBcAb(+) kidney recipients, 27% developed new HBcAb and/or hepatitis B virus surface antibody after transplant; in contrast, only 4% of control patients developed new antibody responses (relative risk=4.94; confidence interval 1.07-22.83). Among the recipients of HBcAb(+) organs, 18% developed elevated transaminases after transplant, in comparison with 36% of the controls. No association was found between "seroconverter" status and elevated alanine aminotransferase profiles in either group.Transplantation of renal allografts from HBcAb(+), HBsAg(-) donors was not associated with clinically detectable HBV disease or antigenemia. However, recipients had a significantly increased risk of HBV seroconversion, consistent with exposure to HBV antigen. These results suggest that HBcAb(+) kidneys can be safely used if transplanted into appropriate recipients, but highlight the need for effective HBV vaccination and vaccine-response monitoring in potential recipients.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic bladder disease of unknown etiology. We sought to determine whether a cytotoxin is present in the urine of IC patients that could cause the epithelial damage seen in this disease.Evidence for a cytotoxin was sought using both a neutral red uptake viability assay in T24 bladder epithelial cells, and a 3H-thymidine incorporation assay in primary normal adult bladder epithelial cells and FHS 738 Bl human fetal bladder cells.The neutral red assay in T24 cells indicated the presence of a cytotoxin in 2 of 9 IC patient urine specimens. However, the more sensitive assay of cell proliferation (3H-thymidine incorporation) in normal adult human bladder epithelial cells revealed antiproliferative activity in urine from 10 of 13 (77%) IC patients vs. 3 of 19 (16%) controls (two-way analysis of variance, p = .019). The antiproliferative activity of IC urine specimens was confirmed using FHS 738 Bl human fetal bladder cells. The antiproliferative urinary substance(s) appeared to be a low molecular weight (10,000 Da), heat stable, trypsin-sensitive factor(s).Because a denuded or damaged bladder epithelium is a central finding in IC, it is possible that the antiproliferative protein(s) contributes to the pathogenesis of this disease.

Multiple readings of otoliths are often carried out to assess the repeatability and reliability of increment counts for estimating fish age. Various criteria have been used to assign or discard age estimates from repeated counts when discrepancies occur although the reasons for doing so are usually not stated or justified. Trends in relative frequencies (percentage disagreement, PD) and magnitudes (inter-read discrepancy, IRD) of otolith-count discrepancies were explored for 15 species of fish collected from a range of locations around Australia to explore generality in the best explanatory model(s) for otolith-count discrepancies and, hence, the most appropriate criterion for accepting or rejecting age estimates from multiple-count data. Increasing discrepancies with increasing age, according to a constant per-increment probability of error, was the best-approximating model for 9 of the 15 species for PD data but for only two species for IRD data. Our results indicated disproportionately higher rates of rejection of estimates from older age groups if exact agreement between repeated counts was required for age acceptance. Results varied with the reader, region and the method of otolith reading, indicating that multiple criteria for accepting or rejecting counts from multiple readings may be required among or even within species.

We examined the sera from 14 HIV-1 seroconverters for the presence of autoantibodies against CD4. Anti-CD4 antibodies were detected in the serum of 11 of 13 HIV-1-infected persons at the time of HIV-1 seroconversion. In 6 of 14 persons from whom a serum was obtained prior to HIV-1 seroconversion, anti-CD4 antibodies were found 90 to 540 days before antibodies to HIV-1 were detectable. In comparison, anti-CD4 antibodies were present in only 7 serum samples from 62 HIV-1 seronegative individuals, including 50 from a seronegative homosexual male cohort. These results suggest that anti-CD4 antibodies are generated in response to early HIV-1 infection and possibly could be used as a marker for HIV-1 infection in some infected persons who are seronegative for HIV-1.

A human embryonic lung (HEL) cell receptor for gp86 of human cytomegalovirus that functions in virus-cell fusion was further characterized. Anti-idiotype antibodies that mimic gp86 were used to immunoprecipitate the 92.5-kDa fibroblast membrane receptor for gp86, which was preincubated with various endoglycosidases. The receptor, which has a pI ranging from 5.3 to 5.6, appears to be a glycoprotein with primarily N-linked sugar residues, some of which have high concentrations of mannose and some of which are complex oligosaccharides. Western blots (immunoblots) of electrophoretically transferred receptor incubated with various biotinylated lectins confirmed the presence of sugar moieties, including N-acetylglucosamine, glucose or mannose, and galactose, but not fucose or N-acetylgalactosamine. This gp86 receptor from uninfected HEL cells also incorporated radiolabeled phosphate from orthophosphoric acid, indicating that it is a constitutively phosphorylated receptor.

To interpret the significance of multiple episodes of zircon growth, the processes controlling zircon growth must be distinguished. There is currently little agreement concerning the origin and significance of metamorphic zircon and how it can be related to pressure-temperature-time ( P T t ) paths (cf. Fraser et al., 1997; Roberts and Finger, 1997). New zircon growth has been attributed to a number of different processes: (1) melt crystallisation; (2) net-transfer reactions; (3) hydrothermal precipitation; or (4) solid-state recrystallisation/replacement processes. Each of these mechanisms has different implications for the interpretation of zircon ages. As zircon remains closed to isotopic exchange at temperatures in excess of those commonly experienced during either metamorphism or magmatism, zircon ages will generally record the time of growth rather than the time of cooling below its closure temperature. While dating of different layers of zircon can constrain the time of zircon growth it will not shed light on the zircon formation mechanism. To help interpret zircon ages in terms of tectonic processes it is necessary to study zircon morphology, internal structure and chemistry and to try and relate this to the textural relations and chemistry of the zircon host rock. Regional setting. The tectonic evolution of the Cyclades during the Alpine orogeny includes polyphase metamorphism, deformation, fluid infiltration, anatexis and shearing. Hence the Cyclades provides a natural laboratory to assess the behaviour of zircon developed in response to different mechanisms. The Cyclades consist of a Hercynian orthogneiss basement, in unconformable contact with a variegated series of Mesozoic marbles, schists and metavolcanics (Drift et al., 1978). During the Alpine orogeny these rocks experienced an Eocene high pressure metamorphism (M1) overprinted by OligoMiocene greenschist-amphibolite facies medium pressure metamorphism (M2). They form the lower plate to a sequence of metamorphic core complexes exposed in the Aegean (Lister et al., 1984). The upper plate is comprised of ophiolites, Upper Cretaceous/Permo-Triassic limestones and granitoids that have experienced Cretaceous high temperature, low pressure metamorphism but have not experienced any Alpine metamorphism (Reinecke et al., 1982), along with unmetamorphosed sediments and volcanics. Methods. Zircons were separated from rock units that had experienced Alpine orogenesis from the islands of Naxos, Ios and Sifnos. They were imaged using cathodoluminescence techniques to identify internal zircon structures and choose potential target sites for analysis. Layers that could clearly be identified as new growth, potentially related to metamorphism, were preferentially analysed. U, Th and Pb/U in the sample zircons relative to those in the SL13 reference zircon were measured using the sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP). The main advantage in using SHRIMP for U-Pb dating, as opposed to conventional isotope dilution techniques, is that it allows the analysis of = 30 pm areas within mineral grains and thus the measurement of ages for different growth zones. To ensure no 'mixed ages' occurred due to spatial overlap of more than one growth zone by the probe, all mounts were imaged after analysis to check the actual pit location. Assessment of the age data-sets for the presence of discrete age populations was carried out both by construction of age probability distributions and by a mixture-modelling procedure. Zircon characteristics. The identification of multiple layers of metamorphic zircon growth is made according to zircon morphology, internal structure and chemistry. In general, magmatic zircon growth is characterised by the development of oscillatory zoning while metamorphic zircon is generally unzoned, displays low luminescence and has variable, but generally low Th/U ratios. However, zircons produced by small degrees of partial melting can appear as unzoned, low luminescent overgrowths

Two glycoproteins have been identified on human CMV that induce neutralizing antibody; an 86,000-Da glycoprotein and a 130,000-, 92,000-, and 50,000-Da glycoprotein coimmunoprecipitating complex that appears to be the gB homologue of HSV. We have produced syngeneic monoclonal anti-Id antibodies (mAb2) of the IgM isotype to a CMV-neutralizing monoclonal antibody (mAb1) that is known to bind to the 86,000-Da glycoprotein on the virion envelope. These mAb2 bear the internal image of the original viral antigen as shown by their ability to 1) recognize an interspecies idiotype in CMV-positive human antisera, 2) block mAb1 binding to CMV antigen, and 3) block CMV neutralization by mAb1 in vitro. Immunization of mice with both of these affinity chromatography-purified mAb2 stimulated the production of anti-anti-Id monoclonal antibodies (which we termed mAb3), which bound to the mAb2 by ELISA and neutralized CMV infectivity.

The paper is concerning the Burnum Project, a multidisciplinary research in progress in the roman castrum of Burnum, in Croatia. In particular, the paper is focused on the geophysical mapping carried out and on the role of the non-invasive methods for the reconstruction of the history of the site, from the earliest castrum to the development of the municipium.

Il Progetto “Ager Aquinas” si inserisce tra le attività di del Laboratorio di Topografia Antica e Fotogrammetria presso il Dipartimento di Beni Culturali dell’Università del Salento a Lecce: ricerca avviata nel 1998 con lo scopo di sviluppare, attraverso un esempio applicativo di largo respiro, un modello operativo finalizzato all’individuazione dei beni archeologici nel territorio, alla loro conoscenza, catalogazione ed interpretazione, in un Sistema Informativo Territoriale volto alla gestione e alla diffusione dei dati.
