1. Function Identification in Neuron Populations via Information Bottleneck

Abstract

It is plausible to hypothesize that the spiking responses of certain neurons represent functions of the spiking signals of other neurons. A natural ensuing question concerns how to use experimental data to infer what kind of a function is being computed. Model-based approaches typically require assumptions on how information is represented. By contrast, information measures are sensitive only to relative behavior: information is unchanged by applying arbitrary invertible transformations to the involved random variables. This paper develops an approach based on the information bottleneck method that attempts to find such functional relationships in a neuron population. Specifically, the information bottleneck method is used to provide appropriate compact representations which can then be parsed to infer functional relationships. In the present paper, the parsing step is specialized to the case of remapped-linear functions. The approach is validated on artificial data and then applied to recordings from the motor cortex of a macaque monkey performing an arm-reaching task. Functional relationships are identified and shown to exhibit some degree of persistence across multiple trials of the same experiment.

Abstract

Background: Forced vital capacity (FVC) and six-minute walk distance (6MWD) are robust markers in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) to assess severity and prognosis. It is unknown whether high-resolution computed tomography pattern has any independent effect on the exercise capacity in ILD. We compared six-minute walk test (6MWT) parameters between usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) and non-UIP ILD after adjusting for FVC. Methods: Data from a tertiary care ILD clinic were retrospectively analysed. Based on HRCT, patients were classified as UIP and non-UIP. 6MWT parameters and FVC were recorded for enrolled patients. 6MWD, distance-saturation product (DSP) and exertional desaturation were compared between UIP and non-UIP, using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), with per cent predicted FVC as covariate. Patients were grouped as mild (≥70%), moderate (51%–69%) and severe (≤50%) based on FVC severity. Results: Out of 169 patients enrolled, only patients with all three data points: spirometry, 6MWT and HRCT were included in the analysis (n = 139). UIP group comprised 56 (40.3%), while non-UIP group had 83 (59.7%) patients. More females and lesser smokers were present in non-UIP group. Mean predicted FVC% was similar between the two HRCT groups (P = 0.611) and had a statistically significant, though very weak to weak correlation with 6MWT parameters {6MWD (r = 0.138); pred 6MWD% (r = 0.170); desaturation (r = -0.227); DSP index (r = 0.166)}. Analysis of covariance showed no statistically significant difference in the 6MWT parameters between UIP and non-UIP groups for similar FVC levels. Conclusion: For a similar level of lung function, exercise capacity was similar for patients with UIP and non-UIP pattern ILD.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the fabrication of a new hybrid polymer composite laminate (HPCL) using biodegradable materials to avoid dumping of waste and has all the desired characteristics as compared to the conventional matrix composites used in various applications such as aerospace, railways cabin, structures, sports equipment, medical field, etc. Utilizing the hand lay-up method and compression molding machine, six layers of Kevlar fiber, banana fiber, and an epoxy-based matrix reinforced with GO were fabricated. By altering the stacking order of fibers in which the HPCL were stacked and embedding GO of various weight percentages (0wt%, 0.25wt%, 0.50wt%, 0.75wt%, and 1wt%). As a result, it was seen that the best mechanical characteristics were found to be 42.23 MPa interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength, 300.39 MPa tensile strength, and 85.68 hardness were obtained at set C-2 i.e. 0.5 wt% of GO embedded in KKBBKK stacking order. The 0.25wt% of GO of HPCL of set C-1 yielded the impact strength with the greatest value of 771.6 J/m. FESEM, EDX mapping and XRD tests were also conducted for validating the homogeneity of the material. All the mechanical properties were enhanced by embedding GO and incorporating stacking order in HPCL. Therefore, HPCL can be used where lightweight material with proper mechanical strength and biodegradability is an important condition for sustainable development.

Abstract

The encoding of a message is the creation of the message. The decoding of a message is how people can comprehend, and decipher the message. It is a procedure of understanding and interpretation of coded data into a comprehensible form. In this paper, a self-created explicitly defined function for encoding numerical digits into graphical representation is proposed. The proposed system integrates deep learning methods to get the probabilities of digit occurrence and Edge detection techniques for decoding the graphically encoded numerical digits to numerical digits as text. The proposed system’s major objective is to take in an Image with digits encoded in graphical format and give the decoded stream of digits corresponding to the graph. This system also employs relevant pre-processing techniques to convert RGB to text and image to Canny image. Techniques such as Multi-Label Classification of images and Segmentation are used for getting the probability of occurrence. The dataset is created, on our own, that consists of 1000 images. The dataset has the training data and testing data in the proportion of 9 : 1. The proposed system was trained on 900 images and the testing was performed on 100 images which were ordered in 10 classes. The model has created a precision of 89% for probability prediction.

Abstract

The purpose of this work was to establish the pyrolysis kinetics of agricultural biomass residues (mustard husk (MH), cotton stalk (CS), and groundnut shell (GNS)) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA is carried out at different heating rates (5, 10, 30, and 50 K/min) under inert conditions in the temperature range of 303–1173 K. The iso-conversional methods of Friedman, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa were used to estimate the activation energy of the decomposition process. The Criado method, Coats-Redfern Method, and Direct Differential methods were used to model the kinetics, with the latter two methods providing a closer fit with the experimental data. The kinetics of thermal degradation were separately studied for three temperature zones represented as drying, active, and passive zones. The results of Coats-Redfern and Direct Differential methods showed that (i) the nth-order reaction model is applicable for all the samples with order of reaction in the active zone being around ~ 2.0–3.0, ~ 2.5–3.0, and ~ 3.0 for MH, CS, and GNS, respectively, and (ii) the D-3 model is applicable for all the samples in the passive zone.

Abstract

Present study focuses on the development of sustainable green-sourced carbon nano-sphere (CNSp) from Betel Leaf by thermal decomposition method for high-performance Polyurethane coating. The obtained carbon black was then functionalized with acid solution. FTIR analysis confirms the presence of carboxyl group. The graphitic domain present in the nano-sphere were found using XRD and Raman spectroscopy. TEM analysis clearly shows the mono-dispersed sized nano-spheres of about ~ 40 nm. The nano-sphere was further incorporated into castor oil based Polyurethane coatings. The nanoscale incorporation of the CNSp (0.2 and 0.5%) into the PU shows good increment in the resultant mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of the polyurethane/carbon nano-sphere hybrid in comparison to the virgin PU film. The DMTA result shows an increase in the storage modulus from 3730 to 4454 MPa. Moreover, an accretion in the tensile strength was observed from 5.55 to 9.77 MPa Overall increments of 76.03% and good surface roughness observed by SEM analysis.

Abstract

Water is an elixir which has no color, taste and odor that is used for drinking. The main source of water for drinking purpose is from rivers and lakes. These rivers and lakes are filled with water from rainfall and floods. As the property of water which indicates it is a Universal solvent, the water formed from floods travel through different types of soils and dissolves many impurities in it. This is the main cause of impurities in water. By consumption of this type of water results in causing diseases related to functioning of major organs in human metabolism such as heart, kidneys, and lungs. Recent technologies are very successful in removing bacteria and viruses as well as essential minerals and salts. Due to lack of minerals and salts in drinking water makes it unhealthy by drinking for a longer time. This design of biodegradable polymer filter has a special purpose of adding minerals and salts to the pure water along with neutralizing the taste, color and odor of impure water. This can make the drinking water more pure and healthier with presence of some essential nutrients such as salts and minerals that mobilizes the human body. The filter is made from fiber composites and consists of pores which can filter nano sized particles including metal ions, dissolved impurities. The design and manufacturing of this filter is explained in the paper.

Abstract

Blau syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the triad of granulomatous skin lesions, symmetric polyarthritis with boggy joint swellings, and ocular inflammation. It has an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance and occurs due to a mutation in CARD-15/NOD-2 gene which encodes the cytosolic NOD2 protein, a key molecule in the regulation of innate immunity. Clinical onset is generally in the 1st year of life and is characterized by articular, cutaneous, and ocular noncaseating granulomatous inflammation, which can be variably associated with a heterogeneous systemic spectrum. Here, we describe one such rare case.

Abstract

Thermal decomposition kinetics of Polypropylene (PP) waste is extremely important with respect to valorisation of waste plastics and production of utilizable components viz. chemicals, fuel oil & gas. The present research study focuses on pyrolysis kinetics of PP waste, which is present as a fraction of municipal plastic waste through distributed activation energy model (DAEM). The decomposition kinetics for PP follows a Gaussian distribution, where the normal distribution curves were centred corresponding to activation energy of 224 kJ/mol. The standard deviation of the distribution for the PP sample was found to be 22 kJ/mol indicating its wider distribution of decomposition range. The data validation has been carried out by comparing the rate parameter and extent of conversion values calculated through DAEM model with the Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments carried out for PP at various heating rates of 5, 10, 20 and 40 °C/min.

Recommendation of anything helps in filtering out unwanted and irrelevant products from the entire work set which are not of any use or do not add any importance or value to the current task set to be accomplished. Mobile phone recommendation systems could be a probable revolution in the near future, as the telecommunication and mobile phone production industries are increasing exponentially in the market. Such systems would extract description of similar mobile phones which are most correlated with the mobile phone of user interest. The proposed system carries out this task taking the dataset which comprises of mobile phones and its features extracted from the e-commerce Web site ‘Flipkart’. The dataset comprises of 6917 records in total each one corresponding to a unique mobile phone in the Web site. The proposed model finds the similarities and does the predictions based on the input features in the dataset.

Abstract

Sign Languages also popularly called Signed Languages. This is the only language by which deaf and dumb can communicate with each other and one of the most unexplored areas. So the proposed paper represents a model that can be used to translate given sign language to simple English text so that it could be used for dumb people. By late proceedings in the field of profound learning, there exist many applications that neural network systems can solve one such problem is this sign language. To meet the requirements, the proposed model uses deep learning techniques to solve the problem. One such technique is Convolutional Neural Networks for image depiction and classification. The model designed in the proposed paper has a dataset that consists of 87,002 images. The dataset has been split into training data and test data in the ratio of 9:1. The proposed model was trained on 78,300 images and the testing was performed on 8700 images which were classified in 29 classes. The model has produced a training accuracy of 98.67%.

28. Comparative effectuality of two pre-procedural mouthwashes during debonding - a clinical study

Abstract

Background and Objectives: The aerosols produced by air turbine handpiece during debonding procedures have a high potential risk factor for the spread of infectious agents. Mostly, dental procedures that involve the use of mechanical instrumentation will produce airborne particulate from the operating site. Airotors being commonly used to remove adhesive materials after debonding procedure are known to produce the most visible aerosols. Hence, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide and chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash on the amount of aerosol generation during debonding procedure. Materials and Methods: A split mouth design was followed in this study to allow each patient to serve as his or her own control. The study included 20 patients, randomly assigned into two groups, chlorhexidine and hydrogen peroxide. Blood agar plates were annexed to the face shields, and dental chair table which were used for collecting the aerosol samples following the removal of braces with bracket-removing pliers, the excess adhesive material left on the teeth was removed on the left side of the patient's mouth with a tungsten carbide bur on a handpiece. Then, the patient rinsed his/her mouth with mouthwash (undiluted) for 1 min, and the same clinical procedure was performed for the other side of the mouth, the plates were covered and color coded. The agar plates were sent for aerobic and anaerobic culture. Results: The results revealed that the use of high-speed air turbines with coolant during the removal of adhesive material significantly increases the amount of aerosol contamination in and around the operatory area. There was a reduction of aerobic and anaerobic colony forming units (CFUs) in both the groups, i.e., CHX (48.72%) and hydrogen peroxide (54.40%). Although hydrogen peroxide showed more CFU reductions in both aerobic and anaerobic colonies. Conclusion: In percentage reduction of CFUs, hydrogen peroxide Group showed more reduction than chlorhexidine Group.

Abstract

Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare multisystemic autoimmune disorder in which the esophagus is the second most common organ to be affected after the skin, leading to dysmotility. Literature available on esophageal dysmotility in SSc is limited. Moreover, studies explaining the spectrum of esophageal dysmotility in the disease in the Indian population are sparse. Aim: The aim of this study was to characterize esophageal motility disorders in SSc using esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) in a representative of the Southwestern Indian population. Methods: Thirty-two SSc patients participated in the study. All of them met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and underwent esophageal HRM at the Gastrointestinal Physiology Laboratory, Department of Physiology, of our center. The findings were interpreted using the Chicago Classification v3.0 criteria. Results: Among patients of SSc with a mean age of 42.25 ± 10.45 years, 19 (59.38%) had “absent contractility (AC),” 3 (9.38%) had “ineffective esophageal motility (IEM),” 3 (9.38%) had “type I achalasia, 1 (3.13%) had “esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction,” and 6 (18.75%) had “normal” HRM findings. The HRM parameter of “basal lower esophageal sphincter pressure” differed significantly between “IEM type I achalasia” (P = 0.043) and “type I achalasia AC” groups (P = 0.032), while “median integral relaxation pressure” of “type I achalasia” groups showed significant difference with “normal, IEM, and AC” groups each (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings of the study suggest that varying degrees of esophageal motility disorders are present in SSc using HRM as defined by the Chicago Classification v3.0. Majority (59.38%) of patients had AC, but the rest of them showed other dysmotility patterns.

Abstract

LTE-A has likely been seen as an overwhelming framework utilized by administrators in coming years because of its promising answers for accomplishing high limit, information rate but packet arranging and circulating packets among clients is as yet the principle challenge anticipated of injustice and low execution which arise while allotting packets to clients. In this paper, all these previously mentioned difficulties are examined and broken down, concentrating on two schedulers; they are Proportional Fair (PF) and Maximum Throughput (MT). These techniques do not give QoS to clients that that use different kinds of application streams. NetSim network analyser is utilized to look at between the specified schedulers as far as throughput, hold off period. The suggested algorithim in this paper is to alter the PF scheduler keeping in mind the end goal to satisfy the QoS criteria increasing throughput and reducing the hold off period for continuous streaming for real time application. Voice and video have been preferred as real time traffic and CBR, HTTP, Custom as non-genuine time constrain traffic.

Abstract

Prediction of Alternans in the Heart Introduction Action potential duration (APD) alternans can be accompanied by alternans in intracellular calcium transients ([Ca2+]i), leading to electromechanical alternans. Electromechanical alternans is considered a substrate for ventricular fibrillation. Although some techniques have been developed to predict APD alternans, the onset of [Ca2+]i alternans has never been predicted. Methods and Results Simultaneous mapping of voltage and calcium was performed in 8 Langendorff-perfused rabbit hearts. APD, [Ca2+]i amplitude (CaA) and duration (CaD) alternans were induced using a perturbed downsweep protocol. Local onset of alternans (Bonset) was defined as the cycle length (BCL) at which at least 10% of the RV exhibited alternans. We observed that the local onset of CaA alternans always occurred first, followed by APD and then CaD alternans. We constructed APD, CaD, and CaA restitution portraits for 2 regions of the heart defined at Bonset: the 1:1alt region, which developed alternans, and the 1:1 region, which did not. Our results also show that the slopes and SDyn were higher in 1:1alt region (SDyn = 0.99 ± 0.04 vs 0.73 ± 0.06; = 0.95 ± 0.13 vs 0.65 ± 0.1, P < 0.05) prior to onset of CaD alternans, while S12 and were significantly higher in the 1:1alt region (S12 = 0.59 ± 0.19 vs 0.19 ± 0.02; = 1.09 ± 0.1 vs 0.61 ± 0.08, P < 0.05) prior to onset of CaA alternans. Conclusion We successfully applied the restitution portrait technique to the prediction of [Ca2+]i (both CaA and CaD) alternans. The slopes of the APD/CaD/CaA restitution portrait are definitive indicators of APD, CaD, and CaA alternans.

Abstract

The gluon momentum density xg ( x , Q 2 ) of the proton was extracted at Q 2 = 20 GeV 2 for small values of x between 4 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F 2 at low x constrained by measurementsfrom NMC at larger x ; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x .

GameOfChess is a gripping story of a chess match between two famous professors who contemplates the intricacies of the game and boast of their ultimate strategies of winning as they play the game. Things get more interesting when the game of chess itself starts interacting with the professors and comes out alive. As the professors try to understand the reasons for the events surrounding them, they happen to unravel some very deep mysteries about the fundamental laws of life, society and nature through their vivid dialogues and arguments. The truth that so comes out isn't comforting to either of them. So should they focus on winning the game to satisfy their ego to each other, should they focus on placating the alive game which is going haywire, should they just run away or should they confront the stark truth facing them? And the alcohol and the drugs they are consuming continuously isn't helping them either in making the choice. So, what choice will they ultimately make and who will win the game of chess?

Abstract

It is plausible to hypothesize that the spiking responses of certain neurons represent functions of the spiking signals of other neurons. A natural ensuing question concerns how to use experimental data to infer what kind of a function is being computed. Model-based approaches typically require assumptions on how information is represented. By contrast, information measures are sensitive only to relative behavior: information is unchanged by applying arbitrary invertible transformations to the involved random variables. This paper develops an approach based on the information bottleneck method that attempts to find such functional relationships in a neuron population. Specifically, the information bottleneck method is used to provide appropriate compact representations which can then be parsed to infer functional relationships. In the present paper, the parsing step is specialized to the case of remapped-linear functions. The approach is validated on artificial data and then applied to recordings from the motor cortex of a macaque monkey performing an arm-reaching task. Functional relationships are identified and shown to exhibit some degree of persistence across multiple trials of the same experiment.

Abstract

Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied ine+p ande−p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic regionQ2>200GeV2 andx>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections forQ2>200GeV2 are found to be \(\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} = 30.3_{ - 4.2 - 2.6}^{ + 5.5 + 1.6} pb\) and \(\sigma _{e^ - p \to \nu X} = 54.7_{ - 9.8 - 3.4}^{ + 15.9 + 2.8} pb\). Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variablesx, y andQ2. From the measured differential cross sectionsdσ/dQ2, theW boson mass is determined to be \(M_W = 79_{ - 7 - 4}^{ + 8 + 4} GeV\). Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of \(\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} (Q^2 > 200 GeV^2 ; \eta _{\max }< 2.5) = 0.8_{ - 0.7}^{ + 1.8} \pm 0.1 pb\)

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Deep inelastic $e~-p$ scattering has been studied in both the charged-current (CC) and neutral-current (NC) reactions at momentum transfers squared, $Q~2$, between 400 GeV$~2$ and the kinematic limit of 87500 GeV$~2$ using the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. The CC and NC total cross sections, the NC to CC cross section ratio, and the differential cross sections, $ d\sigma/dQ~2 $, are presented. For $Q~2 \simeq M_W~2$, where $M_W$ is the mass of the $W$ boson, the CC and NC cross sections have comparable magnitudes, demonstrating the equal strengths of the weak and electromagnetic interactions at high $Q~2$. The $Q~2$ dependence of the CC cross section determines the mass term in the CC propagator to be $M_{W} = 76 \pm 16 \pm 13$GeV.

Abstract

Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. Abstract

This paper considers the problem of finding an optimal & sub-optimal task-allocation (assign the processing node for each module of a task or program) in redundant distributed computing systems, with the goal of maximizing system-reliability (probability that the system completes the entire task successfully). Finding an optimal task-allocation is NP-hard in the strong sense. An efficient algorithm is presented for optimal task-allocation in a distributed computing system with level-2 redundancy. The algorithm, a) uses branch & bound with underestimates for reducing the average time complexity of optimal task-allocation computations, and b) reorders the list of modules to allow a subset of modules that does not intra-communicate to be assigned last, for further reduction in the computations of optimal task-allocation for maximizing reliability. An efficient heuristic algorithm is given which obtains sub-optimal solutions in a reasonable computation time. The performance of our algorithms is given over a wide range of parameters such as: number of modules, number of processing nodes, ratio of average execution cost to average communication cost, and connectivity of modules. The effectiveness of the optimal task-allocation algorithm is demonstrated by comparing it to a recent competing optimal task-allocation algorithm, for maximizing reliability. The performance of our algorithm improves very much when the difference between the number of modules and the connectivity increases. Our heuristic algorithm produced optimal solutions in 24% of the cases and found allocations within 1.5 times the optimal in about 86% of the cases.1 ?1995 IEEE

Abstract

It is an established fact that we are facing difficulties in the attendance management. Presently the attendance in most of the organizations is marked manually on paper which is an error-prone process. Specifically, in educational institutions, a significant amount of time of both students and staff is wasted while marking the attendance manually. Further, there are additional malpractices like proxy and bunking which make this system flawed. To counter these problems, we propose a system TATTEND which achieves full transparency and it maintains the regular and accurate updating of the attendance in the database. The three technologies have been integrated to achieve a full-proof system for effective attendance marking. The concept is innovative and a fully automated one. The three technologies include the use of RFID, IR Motion Sensor and an Electronic Deadbolt.

Abstract

The $A$ dependence of the cross section for $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}$ production was measured in the Feynman-$x$ region $0.1\ensuremath{\le}{x}_{F}\ensuremath{\le}0.8$ with a 530-GeV/c ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beam. Thick targets of C, Al, Cu, and Pb were employed. Using the cross-section parametrization $\ensuremath{\sigma}={\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0}{A}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$, we find $\ensuremath{\alpha}=0.85\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06$. No statistically significant dependence of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ on either ${x}_{F}$ or transverse momentum ${p}_{t}$ is observed.

Abstract

The shape of jets produced in quasi-real photon-proton interactions and deep inelastic positron-proton scattering (DIS) at high Q(2) (Q(2) > 100 GeV2) has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets with transverse energies E-T(jet) > 14 GeV and pseudorapidities (eta(jet)) in the range -1 < eta(jet) < 2 are searched for using a cone algorithm in the ep-laboratory frame in the eta - phi plane with a cone radius of one unit. The jet shape broadens as eta(jet) increases and narrows as E-T(jet) increases. Next-to-leading order QCD calculations for inclusive jet photoproduction provide predictions for the jet shapes at the parton level which are found to be consistent with the measurements. The measured jet shapes in neutral current DIS are compared to those in photon-proton collisions and are found to be narrower. The measured jet shapes in DIS are found to be narrower than those in collisions, and are similar to those in e(+)e(-) interactions.
