Mobile communication technologies can provide citizens access to information that is tailored to their specific circumstances. Such technologies may therefore increase citizens’ ability to vote in line with their interests and hold politicians accountable. In a large-scale randomized controlled trial in Uganda (n = 16,083), we investigated whether citizens who receive private, timely, and individualized text messages by mobile phone about public services in their community punished or rewarded incumbents in local elections in line with the information. Respondents claimed to find the messages valuable and there is evidence that they briefly updated their beliefs based on the messages; however, the treatment did not cause increased votes for incumbents where public services were better than expected nor decreased votes where public services were worse than anticipated. The considerable knowledge gaps among citizens identified in this study indicate potential for communication technologies to effectively share civic information. Yet the findings imply that when the attribution of public service outcomes is difficult, even individualized information is unlikely to affect voting behavior.

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 responsible for COVID-19 remains a persistent threat to mankind, especially for the immunocompromised and elderly for which the vaccine may have limited effectiveness. Entry of SARS-CoV-2 requires a high affinity interaction of the viral spike protein with the cellular receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. Novel mutations on the spike protein correlate with the high transmissibility of new variants of SARS-CoV-2, highlighting the need for small molecule inhibitors of virus entry into target cells. We report the identification of such inhibitors through a robust high-throughput screen testing 15,000 small molecules from unique libraries. Several leads were validated in a suite of mechanistic assays, including whole cell SARS-CoV-2 infectivity assays. The main lead compound, Calpeptin, was further characterized using SARS-CoV-1 and the novel SARS-CoV-2 variant entry assays, SARS-CoV-2 protease assays and molecular docking. This study reveals Calpeptin as a potent and specific inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 and some variants.

The “C/O Monitor” for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a dedicated light impurity XUV spectrometer intended to measure Lyman-α transitions of hydrogen-like ions of four low-Z impurities—boron (4.9 nm), carbon (3.4 nm), nitrogen (2.5 nm) and oxygen (1.9 nm). Since the discussed diagnostic will deliver continuous information about the line intensities, it is crucial to understand the origin of the obtained signals with respect to the experimental plasma conditions (electron temperature and density). This, however, might be difficult because of the broad acceptance angle of the spectrometer and irregular shape of the plasma edge or SOL where the radiation is expected to mostly come from, depending on the plasma temperature. For that reason, numerous analyses assuming various ranges of electron density and temperature profiles of the W7-X plasmas have been performed (assuming corona equilibrium and neglecting impurity transport processes). The aim of this work is to estimate the expected radiant flux and determine the sensitivity of the system on impurity-level changes. It will allow to improve understanding between measured signal and impurity concentration.

Does foreign aid shift public spending? Many worry that aid will be “fungible” in the sense that governments reallocate public funds in response to aid. If so, this could undermine development, increase the poorest's dependency on donors, and free resources for patronage. Yet, there is little agreement about the scale or consequences of such effects. We conducted an experiment with 460 elected politicians in Malawi. We provided information about foreign aid projects in local schools to these politicians. Afterwards, politicians made real decisions about which schools to target with development goods. Politicians who received the aid information treatment were 18% less likely to target schools with existing aid. These effects increase to 22–29% when the information was plausibly novel. We find little evidence that aid information heightens targeting of political supporters or family members, or dampens support to the neediest. Instead the evidence indicates politicians allocate the development goods in line with equity concerns.

The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

The new uranyl aqua sulfate compound [({CH3}3N2C3H3{CH2COOH})(H3O)] [(UO2)2(SO4)3(H2O)]·1.5H2O was synthesized and the crystal structure determined. The two-dimensional uranyl-aqua sulfate compound exhibits a previously reported anionic structural unit topology, but features an interstitial complex incorporating hydronium in the form of a disorder Zundel cation and the cation moiety from the ionic liquid 1-carboxymethyl 3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide [HBetMIm][Tf2N], which forms hydrogen bonding dimer pairs. An analysis of similar uranyl sulfate complexes from the literature is conducted to explore the relative importance and role of structure directing factors in alkylammonium charge-balanced two-dimensional uranyl sulfates. A correlation is observed between structural unit charge density and interlayer spacing, with a concomitant direction of structural and orientational geometric isomerism of the anionic structural unit. We discuss the role of synthetic conditions and molecular cation properties in directing structural unit formation through charge density matching and hydrogen bonding.

The paper presents an optimization of a readout structure of the GEM-based detector designed for X-ray imaging for DTT tokamak in the energy range of 2–15 keV. The readout electrode of approximately 100 cm2 surface is composed of hexagonal pixels connected in a way that allows reducing the actual number of signal pixels (electronics channels). At the same time, based on time coincidence analysis, it makes possible to unambiguously identify the position of the recorded X-ray photon. For the input spectrum, the Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE) of the detector was calculated using the Geant4 program and the spatial distributions of electron avalanches at the readout electrode were simulated using the Garfield++ program. These were conducted for a given energy range of radiation and a statistical distribution consistent with the shape of the spectrum considering the DQE of the detector. As a result, the size of a single hexagonal pixel was proposed to capture the position of the recorded radiation quanta in an optimal and effective way.

International audience; This contribution outlines the first preliminary acquisition data obtained by the GEM diagnostics on WEST. It was designed to monitor the radiation of impurities with a particular focus on the challenges of the elaborated plasma imaging technology in the area of SXR radiation. The details of the developed diagnostics and preliminary results obtained within the commissioning phase of the diagnostics at the WEST Project are provided. It is shown that both spatially and spectrally resolved calibrated data could be collected. A comparison with other WEST diagnostics manifests good qualitative agreement. Currently, the developed system records rather high energy part of the SXR radiation (above 4 keV), that nevertheless still could be useful to assess an intensification of the erosion.

During fluidized bed biomass gasification, complex gas-solid mixing patterns and numerous chemical and physical phenomena make identification of optimal operating conditions challenging. In this work, a parametric experimental campaign was carried out alongside the development of a coupled reactor network model (CRNM) which successfully integrates the individually validated sub-models to predict steady-state reactor performance metrics and outputs. The experiments utilized an integrated gasification system consisting of an externally-heated, bench-scale, 4-inch, 5kWth, fluidized bed steam/air blown gasifier fed with woody biomass equipped with a molecular beam mass spectrometer (MBMS) to directly measure tar species. The operating temperature (750-850 ○C) and air/fuel equivalence ratio (ER=0-0.157) were independently varied in order to isolate their effects. Elevating temperature is shown to improve the char gasification rate and reduce tar concentrations. Air strongly impacts the composition of tar, accelerating the conversion of lighter polycyclic-aromatic hydrocarbons into soot precursors, while also improving the overall carbon conversion. Toothpastes are the most universally accepted form of fluoride delivery for caries prevention. To provide anti-caries benefits, they must be able to release fluoride during the time of tooth brushing or post brushing into the oral cavity. However, there is no standard accepted procedure to measure how much fluoride in a toothpaste may be (bio) available for release. The European Organization for Caries Research proposed and supported a workshop with experts in fluoride analysis in toothpastes and representatives from industry. The objective of the workshop was to discuss issues surrounding fluoride analysis in toothpaste and reach consensus on terminology and best practices, wherever the available evidence allowed it. Participants received a background paper and heard presentations followed by structured discussion to define the problem. The group also reviewed evidence on the validity, reliability and feasibility of each technique (namely chromatography and fluoride electroanalysis) and discussed their strengths and limitations. Participants were able to reach a consensus on terminology and were also able to identify and summarize the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. However, they agreed that most currently available methods were developed for regulatory agencies several decades ago, utilizing the best available data from clinical trials then, but require to be updated. They also agreed that although significant advances to our understanding of the mechanism of action of fluoride in toothpaste have been achieved over the past 4 decades, this clearly is an extraordinarily complex subject and more work remains to be done. © 2018 S. A preregistered meta-analysis of six field experiments finds no evidence overall that information campaigns shape voter behavior., Voters may be unable to hold politicians to account if they lack basic information about their representatives’ performance. Civil society groups and international donors therefore advocate using voter information campaigns to improve democratic accountability. Yet, are these campaigns effective? Limited replication, measurement heterogeneity, and publication biases may undermine the reliability of published research. We implemented a new approach to cumulative learning, coordinating the design of seven randomized controlled trials to be fielded in six countries by independent research teams. Uncommon for multisite trials in the social sciences, we jointly preregistered a meta-analysis of results in advance of seeing the data. We find no evidence overall that typical, nonpartisan voter information campaigns shape voter behavior, although exploratory and subgroup analyses suggest conditions under which informational campaigns could be more effective. Such null estimated effects are too seldom published, yet they can be critical for scientific progress and cumulative, policy-relevant learning.

Significance Text messages providing salient, nonpartisan, official information on budget corruption prompted Ugandan voters to take the performance of some politicians into account when voting. Holding politicians accountable via elections is a fundamental precursor to effective governance, economic development, and high-quality public services. The results indicate that communication technologies can combine with data on budget management to help voters make better informed choices at the polls and thus have the potential to enhance local electoral accountability by providing information that is difficult for politicians to control and manipulate., Many politicians manipulate information to prevent voters from holding them accountable; however, mobile text messages may make it easier for nongovernmental organizations to credibly share information on official corruption that is difficult for politicians to counter directly. We test the potential for texts on budget management to improve democratic accountability by conducting a large (n = 16,083) randomized controlled trial during the 2016 Ugandan district elections. In cooperation with a local partner, we compiled, simplified, and text-messaged official information on irregularities in local government budgets. Verified recipients of messages that described more irregularities than expected reported voting for incumbent councillors 6% less often; verified recipients of messages conveying fewer irregularities than expected reported voting for incumbent councillors 5% more often. The messages had no observable effect on votes for incumbent council chairs, potentially due to voters’ greater reliance on other sources of information for higher profile elections. These mixed results suggest that text messages on budget corruption help voters hold some politicians accountable in settings where elections are not free and fair.

It is often assumed that government-sponsored election violence increases the probability that incumbent leaders remain in power. Using cross-national data, this article shows that election violence increases the probability of incumbent victory, but can generate risky post-election dynamics. These differences in the consequences of election violence reflect changes in the strategic setting over the course of the election cycle. In the pre-election period, anti-incumbent collective action tends to be focused on the election itself, either through voter mobilization or opposition-organized election boycotts. In the post-election period, by contrast, when a favorable electoral outcome is no longer a possibility, anti-government collective action more often takes the form of mass political protest, which in turn can lead to costly repercussions for incumbent leaders.

This work explores the combined effects of thermal pretreatment and using a catalyst in situ on gasification carbon conversion efficiency, as well as product gas and tar content and compositions. To compare the effects of thermal pretreatment, pelletized and ground oak with three different levels of thermal pretreatment were gasified in a fluidized bed reactor. The pretreatments applied to the oak were (1) pelletization, (2) drying at 180 °C in air, and (3) torrefaction at 270 °C in nitrogen. The oak dried at 180 °C produced syngas of similar quality and approximately the same amount of char as untreated oak. Torrefaction at 270 °C resulted in syngas with a higher hydrogen to CO ratio, lower methane, and less than half of the total tar—all of which are desirable properties in terms of product gas quality. However, the oak torrefied at 270 °C also produced more than two times the amount of char as the untreated, pelletized oak. To determine the effect of catalyst, a series of experiments were conducted using olivine impregnated with nickel and cerium as the fluidized bed material in the gasifier. These tests showed that modified olivine can improve hydrogen production and reduce methane and tar levels in the syngas. The result was observed for both treated and untreated oak; although the effect was more substantial for untreated oak, for which the use of modified olivine reduced tar concentrations in the product gas by 60%, with a larger reduction in heavier tars than lighter tars. This result is important because reduction in heavier tar plays a more important role in benefitting downstream operations.

In the future magnetically confined fusion research reactors (e.g. ITER tokamak), precise determination of the level of the soft X-ray radiation of plasma with temperature above 30 keV (around 350 mln K) will be very important in plasma parameters optimization. This paper presents the first version of a designed spectrography measurement system. The system is already installed at JET tokamak. Based on the experience gained from the project, the new generation of hardware for spectrography measurements, was designed and also described in the paper. The GEM detector readout structure was changed to 2D in order to perform measurements of i.e. laser generated plasma. The hardware structure of the system was redesigned in order to provide large number of high speed input channels. Finally, this paper also covers the issue of new control software, necessary to set-up a complete system of certain complexity and perform data acquisition. The main goal of the project was to develop a new version of the system, which includes upgraded structure and data transmission infrastructure (i.e. handling large number of measurement channels, high sampling rate).

A systematic comparison of sulfur poisoning on Ni/YSZ and Ni/K2O-CaAl2O4, a commercially available reforming catalyst, demonstrated the heightened and rapid degradation of Ni/YSZ methane reforming activity. Ni/K2O-CaAl2O4 has nearly 15 times the hydrogen uptake capacity of Ni/YSZ which implies a difference in active nickel area. Because of this difference in active nickel surface area, Ni/K2O-CaAl2O4 was diluted in pure α-Al2O3 to achieve the same active nickel surface area as Ni/YSZ. The turnover frequencies (TOF) for steam methane reforming without sulfur on Ni/YSZ and Ni/K2O-CaAl2O4 were similar, although there was some deactivation on Ni/K2O-CaAl2O4 possibly as a result of coking which was observed visually. Sulfur deactivation on both catalysts was examined for H2S, SO2, and COS at concentrations of 1, 3, and 5 ppm. Ni/YSZ deactivated rapidly to an activity close to zero. Ni/K2O-CaAl2O4 deactivated quickly in the first 20 min, but then reached a non-zero steady state activity. The relative deactivation rates for the sulfur species examined were COS > SO2 ≥ H2S. Reaction temperatures of 650 °C, 750 °C, and 800 °C were evaluated, but temperature did not strongly affect deactivation rates for either catalyst. The overarching result of this study is that Ni/YSZ methane reforming activity is more sensitive to sulfur deactivation than a commercial reforming catalyst. The effect is so strong, that the use of Ni/YSZ with any hydrocarbon fuel may require removal of sulfur to sub-ppm levels.

Did foreign aid impede or catalyze democratization in Africa in the 1990s? We argue that after the Cold War, donors increased their use of technical assistance in aid packages, improving their monitoring capacity and thus reducing autocrats’ ability to use aid for patronage. To remain in power, autocrats responded by conceding political rights to their opponents—from legalizing opposition parties to staging elections. We test our theory with panel data for all sub-Saharan African countries. While other factors played pivotal roles in Africa’s political liberalization, we find technical assistance helps to explain the timing and extent of Africa’s democratization.

The paper presents experimental results obtained during the first operational phase (called OP1.1) of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator (W7-X). One of W7-X diagnostics that delivers information about plasma impurities and was commissioned during the OP1.1, is the Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) system which provides soft X-ray spectra of highly ionized impurity species over a very broad energy range with energy resolution not worse than 200 eV and with temporal resolution of 100 ms. The line-of-sight integrated spectra, collected by a Silicon Drift Detector in the energy range between 0.9 and 10 keV, have been analyzed for various experimental conditions and are discussed with respect to results from other diagnostics. In this work, injected impurities (argon and neon) as well as intrinsic impurities (sulphur and chlorine) have been identified. Spectral lines corresponding to heavier impurities have not been observed.

The paper reports on the optimization process of the soft X-ray pulse height analyzer installed on the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. It is a 3-channel system that records X-ray spectra in the range from 0.6 to 19.6 keV. X-ray spectra, with a temporal and spatial resolution of 100 ms and 2.5 cm (depending on selected slit sizes), respectively, are line integrated along a line-of-sight that crosses near to the plasma center. In the second W7-X operation phase with a carbon test divertor unit, light impurities, e.g., carbon and oxygen, were observed as well as mid- to high-Z elements, e.g., sulfur, chlorine, chromium, manganese, iron, and nickel. In addition, X-ray lines from several tracer elements have been observed after the laser blow-off injection of different impurities, e.g., silicon, titanium, and iron, and during discharges with prefill or a gas puff of neon or argon. These measurements were achieved by optimizing light absorber-foil selection, which defines the detected energy range, and remotely controlled pinhole size, which defines photon flux. The identification of X-ray lines was confirmed by other spectroscopic diagnostics, e.g., by the High-Efficiency XUV Overview Spectrometer, HEXOS, and high-resolution X-ray imaging spectrometer, HR-XIS.

Transport properties of impurities in stellarators are sensitive to potential variations on flux-surfaces, and thermodynamic forces from the bulk plasma which might be affected by changes in magnetic field properties. In this contribution, the effect of planar coil current changes on the core impurity behavior in the first operating phase of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is described. Hydrogen plasmas, at different heating power levels were investigated showing Core-Electron-Root-Confinement (CERC) conditions, characterized by peaked Te profiles and positive radial electric fields in the plasma core. Impurity spectra in the x-ray emission range between 1 and 10 keV were measured by the Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) diagnostic. The line-integrated measurements of transitions in sulphur, chlorine and argon are in the focus of this analysis. First observations indicate that the scans of the magnetic configuration did not affect strongly the impurity concentration in the core. Clear differences in the impurity content, however, have been observed when the ECRH power was changed, which affects the bulk plasma properties.

This paper presents measurements of the electron temperature in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator plasmas heated by electron-cyclotron-resonance (ECRH) during the first operational phase (OP1.1). The analysis of the slope of the observed X-ray continuum emission (in a semi-logarithmic plot) measured by the use of the Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) system, provides the information about the electron temperature (Te) of the hydrogen plasma. The determination of this fundamental plasma parameter is based on the exponential dependence of the continuum radiation (Bremsstrahlung) on photon energy assuming Maxwellian distribution. In this paper, some experimental results of the estimated electron temperature are presented and compared to the results obtained from the simulations of X-ray spectrum and other diagnostic like the Thomson Scattering (TS) system.

Transnational crime brings substantial foreign capital into a number of fragile and developing states. Yet the economic and political impacts of such capital have rarely been studied due to the challenges of obtaining accurate data on illicit activities. We overcome this challenge by compiling a dataset on the amount and disbursement dates of ransom payments made by ship owners and insurers to Somali pirates from 2005 to 2012, along with sub-national commodity prices and trade flows in Somalia. Using a difference-in-differences strategy, we hypothesize and find that ransoms have effects similar to those associated with the Dutch Disease. These effects include appreciating the local currency, decreasing export competitiveness, and increasing import dependence. The results illuminate a new channel through which illicit capital can undermine long-term economic development and foster an economic and political dependency on illicit sectors.

An integrated biomass-to-mixed alcohol process was demonstrated at the pilot scale, including indirect gasification, tar and hydrocarbon reforming, gas conditioning, and gas to liquids operations. Additional bench-scale experiments were conducted to gather insights into reforming and fuel synthesis operations under more extensive conditions. Data from these experiments were combined with tools and knowledge owned by industrial partners—Rentech and The Dow Chemical Company—to validate a conceptual commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol refinery. Results suggest that both reforming and mixed alcohol processes are scalable and economical, with a modeled mature plant ethanol production cost of $0.54/L ($0.82/L of gasoline equivalent). Sustainability metrics for the conversion process are also presented.

An integrated thermochemical biomass to ethanol process was demonstrated at the pilot scale at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). A total of 233 h of pilot scale mixed alcohol production was achieved, comprising 81 h of continuous operation in methanol-derived syngas followed by 152 h of continuous operation in biomass-derived syngas. During this period the system generated 20 L of mixed alcohol product. The fully integrated biomass to mixed alcohol process was comprised of a solids feeder, fluidized bed indirect steam gasifier, thermal cracker, char collector, fluidized bed steam reformer, packed bed polishing steam reformer, scrubber, pressure-swing CO2 adsorber, and gas-phase continuously stirred tank gas-to-liquid reactor (CSTR). Additional pumps, compressors, and blowers were used to convey gases, solids, and liquids. Renewable transportation fuels from biomass have the potential to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and diversify global fuel supplies. Thermal conversion by fast pyrolysis converts up to 75% of the starting plant material (and its energy content) to a bio-oil intermediate suitable for upgrading to motor fuel. Woody biomass, by far the most widely-used and researched material, is generally preferred in thermochemical processes due to its low ash content and high quality bio-oil produced. However, the availability and cost of biomass resources, e.g. forest residues, agricultural residues, or dedicated energy crops, vary greatly by region and will be key determinates in the overall economic feasibility of a pyrolysis-to-fuel process. Formulation or blending of various feedstocks, combined with thermal and/or chemical pretreatment, could facilitate a consistent, high-volume, lower-cost biomass supply to an emerging biofuels industry. However, the impact of biomass type and pretreatment conditions on bio-oil yield and quality, and the potential process implications, are not well understood. This literature review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the effect of feedstock and pretreatments on the yield, product distribution, and upgradability of bio-oil.

Efficient cleaning and conditioning of biomass derived syngas for use in fuel synthesis continues to be a significant technical barrier to commercialising biofuels. The relative effectiveness of a range of nickel and rhodium containing catalysts for the conversion of model tar compounds (toluene and naphthalene or benzene) in a simulated bio-syngas stream containing up to 100 ppm H 2 S and up to 5 vol.% CH 4 at temperatures from 700 to 900 °C were assessed at JMTC. Though H 2 S was found to significantly reduce hydrocarbon conversion near complete conversion of methane and tar could be achieved on a Rh based catalyst at 900 °C with a very high GHSV of 150,000 h −1 . At more realistic GHSV of 60,000 h −1 and higher methane levels (5 vol.%) the effect of H 2 S concentration on catalyst activity followed an apparent linear activity decay law. Furthermore, the H 2 S deactivation was fully reversible and could be attributed to a transient site-blocking mechanism (TSB). Selected catalysts were also evaluated at NREL for tar and methane conversions using oak modelled syngas. The best Ni and best Rh catalyst were then tested under real conditions using oak derived syngas from NREL's pilot scale gasification unit. Rh based catalysts gave significantly better hydrocarbon conversion than the Ni catalysts at comparable conditions. The best Rh catalyst demonstrated 200 h of steady state methane conversion of 95% with little apparent loss of activity using oak modelled syngas.

The paper describes the conceptual design of the Multi-Foil System (MFS) for the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) operated at IPP-Greifswald in Germany. The proposed diagnostic is based on the foil-absorption technique which is used for estimation of the intensity of X-ray radiation and electron temperature of plasma. The proposed diagnostic will be composed of up to eight detector arrays (with five Si detectors each) with beryllium filters of different thickness. The proposed detectors are silicon p-i-n diodes 380 μm thick, which assures good efficiency up to 20 keV. The main MFS vacuum chamber will be mounted on a suitable port of Wendelstein 7-X via a gate valve. At the chamber entrance are eight pinholes, covered by a beryllium foil of 10 μm thickness in order to protect the detectors from ECRH stray radiation. Additionally, inside the MFS vacuum chamber, eight beryllium filters of different thicknesses will be positioned to collect signals in eight energy ranges as defined by filters. The paper presents the preliminary design taking into account specific W7-X requirements.

Wendelstein 7-X, a superconducting optimized stellarator built in Greifswald/Germany, started its first plasmas with the last closed flux surface (LCFS) defined by 5 uncooled graphite limiters in December 2015. At the end of the 10 weeks long experimental campaign (OP1.1) more than 20 independent diagnostic systems were in operation, allowing detailed studies of many interesting plasma phenomena. For example, fast neutral gas manometers supported by video cameras (including one fast-frame camera with frame rates of tens of kHz) as well as visible cameras with different interference filters, with field of views covering all ten half-modules of the stellarator, discovered a MARFE-like radiation zone on the inboard side of machine module 4. This structure is presumably triggered by an inadvertent plasma-wall interaction in module 4 resulting in a high impurity influx that terminates some discharges by radiation cooling. The main plasma parameters achieved in OP1.1 exceeded predicted values in discharges of a length reaching 6 s. Although OP1.1 is characterized by short pulses, many of the diagnostics are already designed for quasi-steady state operation of 30 min discharges heated at 10 MW of ECRH. An overview of diagnostic performance for OP1.1 is given, including some highlights from the physics campaigns.

Syngas derived from biomass and coal gasification for fuel synthesis or electricity generation contains sulfur species that are detrimental to downstream catalysts or turbine operation. Sulfur removal in high temperature, high steam conditions has been known to be challenging, but experimental reports on methods to tackle the problem are not often reported. We have developed sorbents that can remove hydrogen sulfide from syngas at high temperature (700 °C), both in dry and high steam conditions. The syngas composition chosen for our experiments is derived from statistical analysis of the gasification products of wood under a large variety of conditions. The two sorbents, Cu-ceria and manganese-based, were tested in a variety of conditions. In syngas containing steam, the capacity of the sorbents is much lower, and the impact of the sorbent in lowering H2S levels is only evident in low space velocities. Spectroscopic characterization and thermodynamic consideration of the experimental results suggest that in syngas containing 45% steam, the removal of H2S is primarily via surface chemisorptions. For the Cu-ceria sorbent, analysis of the amount of H2S retained by the sorbent in dry syngas suggests both copper and ceria play a role in H2S removal. For the manganese-based sorbent, in dry conditions, there is a solid state transformation of the sorbent, primarily into the sulfide form.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is collaborating with both industrial and academic partners to develop technologies to help enable commercialization of biofuels produced from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks. The focus of this paper is to report how various operating processes, utilized in-house and by collaborators, influence the catalytic activity during conditioning of biomass-derived syngas. Efficient cleaning and conditioning of biomass-derived syngas for use in fuel synthesis continues to be a significant technical barrier to commercialization. Multifunctional, fluidizable catalysts are being developed to reform undesired tars and light hydrocarbons, especially methane, to additional syngas, which can improve utilization of biomass carbon. This approach also eliminates both the need for downstream methane reforming and the production of an aqueous waste stream from tar scrubbing. This work was conducted with NiMgK/Al2O3 catalysts. These catalysts were assessed for methane reforming performance in (i) fixed-bed, bench-scale tests with model syngas simulating that produced by oak gasification, and in pilot-scale, (ii) fluidized tests with actual oak-derived syngas, and (iii) recirculating/regenerating tests using model syngas. Bench-scale tests showed that the catalyst could be completely regenerated over several reforming reaction cycles. Pilot-scale tests using raw syngas showed that the catalyst lost activity from cycle to cycle when it was regenerated, though it was shown that bench-scale regeneration by steam oxidation and H2 reduction did not cause this deactivation. Characterization by TPR indicates that the loss of a low temperature nickel oxide reduction feature is related to the catalyst deactivation, which is ascribed to nickel being incorporated into a spinel nickel aluminate that is not reduced with the given activation protocol. Results for 100 h time-on-stream using a recirculating/regenerating reactor suggest that this type of process could be employed to keep a high level of steady-state reforming activity, without permanent deactivation of the catalyst. Additionally, the differences in catalyst performance using a simulated and real, biomass-derived syngas stream indicate that there are components present in the real stream that are not adequately modeled in the syngas stream. Heavy tars and polycyclic aromatics are known to be present in real syngas, and the use of benzene and naphthalene as surrogates may be insufficient. In addition, some inorganics found in biomass, which become concentrated in the ash following biomass gasification, may be transported to the reforming reactor where they can interact with catalysts. Therefore, in order to gain more representative results for how a catalyst would perform on an industrially-relevant scale, with real contaminants, appropriate small-scale biomass solids feeders or slip-streams of real process gas should be employed.

During biomass gasification, sulfur contained in the feedstock is converted primarily to hydrogen sulfide. Conventional technologies for sulfur removal such as amine scrubbing and ZnO sorption operate at much lower temperatures than those of gasification and tar reforming and are thus thermally inefficient for cleanup of biomass-derived syngas. This work aims to develop options for high-temperature sulfur removal. In this research, we focus our investigation on the regeneration chemistry of a manganese-based sorbent for sulfur removal at the high temperature, high steam conditions (700 °C and up to 68% steam) used for biomass gasification and subsequent syngas conditioning. We found that regeneration conditions that have a small amount of air or steam in combination with air would allow for equal sulfidation and regeneration time. We also demonstrated the effectiveness of both fresh and regenerated sorbents in protecting downstream tar and methane reforming catalysts.

A parametric study of the gasification of four feedstocks (corn stover, switchgrass, wheat straw, and wood) has been performed on an experimental, pilot-scale (0.5 ton/day) gasification facility. A comparison was made of the performance of the gasifier as a function of feedstock, in terms of the syngas production and composition. In these experiments, pelletized feedstock was used, so that the shapes and sizes of the materials did not influence the results. A total of 22 statistically designed experimental conditions were examined for each feedstock, including the effects of varying the temperature of the fluidized bed, the temperature of the secondary thermal cracker, and the steam-to-biomass ratio. For each experimental condition, the permanent-gas composition was measured continuously by gas chromatography (GC). Tars were measured continuously using a molecular-beam mass spectrometer (MBMS). A pilot-scale study was conducted to examine the effect of the steam-to-biomass ratio, the gasification temperature, and the thermal cracker temperature for Vermont wood, wheat straw, switchgrass, and corn stover on the formation and speciation of tars. This study is divided into two parts; the first paper detailed the processing conditions and gives quantitative information on low-molecular-weight species. This paper, which is the second part of this study, uses multivariate curve resolution techniques to correlate process variables with the mass spectra gathered during the study to (1) identify the global chemistry of the system and (2) to identify differences or similarities of the product gas streams for each feedstock. Thermochemical conversion of biomass to create fuels and chemical products may be achieved through the gasification route via syngas. The resulting biomass-derived raw syngas contains the building blocks of carbon monoxide and hydrogen as well as undesired impurities, such as tars, hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, hydrogen chloride, and other trace contaminants. These impurities require removal, usually through catalytic conditioning, to produce a quality syngas for end-use synthesis of liquid fuels, such as mixed alcohols and Fischer−Tropsch liquids. In the past decade, significant research attention has been focused on these catalytic processes. ZusammenfassungDer Artikel stellt das Vorgehen und die Erfahrungen in einem Projekt zur Aufnahme und Modellierung klinischer Prozesse an einem Krankenhaus vor. Die Prozessaufnahme und Modellierung sind in eine 4-Schritte-Methode eingebettet, deren zentraler Bestandteil die Ist-Analyse der Prozesse darstellt. Aufbauend auf einer Standardmodellierungssprache werden domänenspezifische Konstrukte vorgestellt, mit denen die Qualität der modellier-ten Prozesse weiter verbessert wird. Mit die-sem erweiterten Modell beschreiben wir ausführlich die Modellerstellung basierend auf Interviews mit den Prozessbeteiligten im Krankenhaus. Mit Hilfe der daraus gewonnen Informationen wird ein Soll-Konzept der Prozesse definiert, womit vorhandene Verbesserungspotenziale im Klinikum aufgezeigt werden. Der Artikel stellt außerdem vor, wie die Prozessmodelle im Unternehmen genutzt werden können, um das Prozessverständnis der Mitarbeiter zu verbessern und sie bei der täglichen Arbeit zu unterstützen.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a large optimized stellarator (B=2.5T, V=30m3) aiming at demonstrating the reactor relevance of the optimized stellarators. In 2015 W7-X will begin its first operation phase (OP1.1) with five inertially cooled inboard limiters made of graphite. Assuming the heat loads can be spread out evenly between the limiters, 1 second discharges at 2 MW of ECRH heating power could be run in OP1.1. The expected plasma parameters will be sufficient to demonstrate the readiness of the installed diagnostics and even to run a first physics program. The diagnostics available for this first operation phase, including some special limiter diagnostics, and their capabilities are being presented. In metallic tokamaks, the interplay between particle transport and MagnetoHydroDynamic (MHD) activity might lead to impurities accumulation and finally to disruption. Studying such phenomena is thus essential if stationary discharges are to be achieved. Measuring the soft X-ray (SXR) radiation ([0.1 keV; 20 keV]) of magnetic fusion plasmas is a standard way of accessing valuable information on particle transport and MHD. Generally, like at Tore Supra (TS), the analysis is performed with a 2D tomographic system composed of several cameras equipped with silicon barrier diodes (SBD). On WEST the installation of an upper divertor masks many of the actual TS vertical diodes so that no proper tomography is possible. This paper presents the design of a new SXR diagnostic for the WEST project developed in collaboration with IPPLM (Poland) and the Warsaw University of Technology, based on a triple gas electron multiplier (GEM) detector. Preliminary simulations performed to size and position the detector and its electronics inside the vertical thimble are also presented, in particular estimation of magnetic field and temperature variation affecting GEM spatial resolution and signal quality. As a conclusion, perspectives about tomographic capabilities of the new system for studying impurity transport are given.

A rule-based model was built in order to analyse the effects of environmental variables (wind stress, Ekman transport, turbulence, and sea surface temperature [SST]) on the recruitment of the Brazilian sardine Sardinella brasiliensis. The purpose of modelling was (1) to test the optimal environmental window hypothesis (characterised by 'dome-shape' formats) for the variables studied and (2) to evaluate the application of the model as a tool for recruitment prediction. The model was run under different conditions and the following results were obtained: (1) when environmental variables only were used as inputs, the model response was poor; (2) when biomass was added as an input, and the dome-shape effect enhanced, the model's results were good; and (3) when the dome-shape effect was excluded, the model response was intermediate. These findings support the hypothesis of an 'optimal environmental window' for wind and SST, and that incorporation of such relationships leads to better predictions of recruitment...

The paradox of patients who are in pain, yet satisfied with their pain management, has been previously reported. To probe this paradox, we used cross-sectional data collected in the primary care setting on cancer patients' patterns of pain and pain treatment, beliefs and expectations about pain and pain relief, willingness to report pain and take pain medication, care from the provider, and satisfaction with their pain management (n = 316). Descriptive findings were similar to other studies: more than 75% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall pain management, despite almost half of all patients reporting recent moderate to severe pain. Univariate and bivariate analyses were consistent with the hypothesis that patients may expect and are therefore satisfied with the "peak and trough" pattern of pain severity that occurs with "as-needed" administration of analgesics. However, multivariate analyses failed to directly support this hypothesis. Instead, regression analyses identified factors related to characteristics of patients' pain experiences, patients' beliefs about pain and its inevitability, the frequency that patients reported their pain, and aspects of the patient--provider relationship. Predictors of patients' satisfaction with how their primary care doctor managed their pain included: whether or not the patient was told that treating pain was an important goal, whether or not the patient reported sustained long-term pain relief, and the degree to which the patient was willing to take opioids if prescribed by the doctor or nurse (adjusted R(2) = 0.22). Qualitative data collected from patients who were in severe pain during the past three days but satisfied with their pain management (n = 88) further suggest the importance of the patient--provider relationship in shaping patient expectations. Based on these findings, we recommend that future research on outcomes in pain management place greater emphasis on the potential impact of the patient-provider relationship.

An overview of the diagnostics which are essential for the first operational phase of Wendelstein 7-X and the set of diagnostics expected to be ready for operation at this time are presented. The ongoing investigations of how to cope with high levels of stray Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) radiation in the ultraviolet (UV)/visible/infrared (IR) optical diagnostics are described.

Presented 2D gaseous detector system has been developed and designed to provide energy resolved fast dynamic plasma radiation imaging in the soft X-Ray region with 0.1 kHz exposure frequency for online, made in real time, data acquisition (DAQ) mode. The detection structure is based on triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) amplification structure followed by the pixel readout electrode. The efficiency of detecting unit was adjusted for the radiation energy region of tungsten in high-temperature plasma, the main candidate for the plasma facing material for future thermonuclear reactors. Here we present preliminary laboratory results and detector parameters obtained for the developed system. The operational characteristics and conditions of the detector were designed to work in the X-Ray range of 2-17 keV. The detector linearity was checked using the fluorescence lines of different elements and was found to be sufficient for good photon energy reconstruction. Images of two sources through various screens were performed with an X-Ray laboratory source and 55Fe source showing a good imaging capability. Finally offline stream-handling data acquisition mode has been developed for the detecting system with timing down to the ADC sampling frequency rate (~13 ns), up to 2.5 MHz of exposure frequency, which could pave the way to invaluable physics information about plasma dynamics due to very good time resolving ability. Here we present results of studied spatial resolution and imaging properties of the detector for conditions of laboratory moderate counting rates and high gain.

Despite allegations that foreign aid promotes corruption and patronage, little is known about how recipient governments' electoral incentives influence aid spending. This article proposes a distributional politics model of aid spending in which governments use their informational advantages over donors in order to allocate a disproportionate share of aid to electorally strategic supporters, allowing governments to translate aid into votes. To evaluate this argument, the author codes data on the spatial distribution of multilateral donor projects in Kenya from 1992 to 2010 and shows that Kenyan governments have consistently influenced the aid allocation process in favor of copartisan and coethnic voters, a bias that holds for each of Kenya's last three regimes. He confirms that aid distribution increases incumbent vote share. This evidence suggests that electoral motivations play a significant role in aid allocation and that distributional politics may help explain the gap between donor intentions and outcomes.
