We developed a redundant logic for predicting Vertical Displacement Events (VDEs) using only magnetic diagnostics with a Support Vector Machine (Inoue et al 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 086007). This logic was experimentally validated in the integrated commissioning of JT-60SA. Triggering of VDEs results in significant asymmetric heat loads on first walls and electromagnetic loads on conducting materials. These concerns are mitigated by a newly proposed direction control for VDEs. We successfully detected VDEs in experiments and controlled their direction by setting the control voltage to zero upon detection, thus guiding VDEs in an intended direction and reducing the risk to the device from unmitigated VDEs in either direction, although completely avoiding VDEs remains the ideal. In the developed predictor, VDEs are predicted using proxies to monitor the controller’s performance with an adaptive voltage allocation scheme (Inoue et al 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 096009). For future experiments, we plan to extend our approach to monitor more detailed information from the equilibrium controller, including control values of each PID component, which has been shown to enhance the prediction accuracy of VDEs.

Disruption database in the JT-60SA first plasma operation period has been constructed. The disruptions have been divided into three categories based on their characteristics, and the characteristics of each category have been discussed. The most commonly observed disruptions were vertical displacement events (VDEs). As expected by simulations using the MHD equilibrium control simulator (MECS), a highly elongated plasma was likely to disrupt by VDE when the gap between the plasma surface and the wall is large. Despite the quite high edge safety factor $q_\mathrm{95}$ of above 10 in the initial operation, some discharge disrupted because of control failure caused by the n = 1 tearing mode. One possible cause of the n = 1 tearing mode is the edge cooling in high density. The last category is the radiative disruptions, which is characterized by slow current decay with multiple spikes in soft x-ray signals. These spikes are thought to be related to the MHD activity that occurred when the cooling front crossed the rational surface. The radiative disruptions are attributed to a sudden change in edge power balance.

Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

The roadmap for the commissioning and first operations of superconductive tokamaks envisages the possibility of running discharges with fairly elongated plasmas before the complete installation of the in-vessel components, including vertical stabilization coils, or any other specific sets of coils to be used for the magnetic control of fast transients. In the absence of dedicated actuators, the magnetic control system shall perform the essential fast control actions by using the out-vessel superconductive coils, if needed. These are typically less efficient in reacting to fast transients, due to the shielding effect of the vessel and imply a coupling with other control tasks relying on the same actuators, such as plasma current, position, and shape control. Hence, effective actuator-sharing strategies must be put in place. This paper presents an architecture and a possible control strategy that is able to cope with vertically unstable elongated plasmas subject to fast varying disturbances, in the absence of dedicated in-vessel coils. The architecture exploits a model-based actuator-sharing approach to effectively accomplish the main magnetic control objectives while minimizing the cross-couplings among the various tasks. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated by means of nonlinear simulations of realistic JT-60SA scenarios. In particular, an isoflux plasma shape controller is integrated with plasma current control and vertical stabilization. The proposed control approach proves to control vertical displacement events and plasma deformations due to fast variations of poloidal beta with satisfactory performance.

The world’s largest superconducting tokamak, JT-60SA, has successfully achieved its first plasma operation under the constraint of a low toroidal inductive electric field of 0.15 V m ^−1 . A plasma start-up scenario, leveraging the effective confinement of electrons accelerated by the electron cyclotron wave, proved to be instrumental in reaching this milestone under the challenging conditions. The demonstration of plasma start-up using second harmonic electron cyclotron heating, with an applied toroidal electric field of 0.15 V m ^−1 , strongly validates the feasibility of achieving first plasma operation in ITER.

Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) affect human health and climate change prediction; however, the factors (e.g., temperature, acidity of pre-existing particles, and oxidants) influencing their formation are not sufficiently resolved. Using a compact chamber, the temperature and acidity dependence of SOA yields and chemical components in SOA from α-pinene ozonolysis were systematically investigated under 278, 288, and 298 K temperatures using neutral ((NH4)2SO4) and acidic (H2SO4+((NH4)2SO4)) seed aerosols. SOA components with m/z less than 400 were analyzed using negative electrospray ionization liquid-chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Based on the slightly negative temperature dependence of the SOA yields, the enthalpies of vaporization under neutral and acidic seed conditions were estimated to be 25 and 44 kJ mol−1, respectively. In addition, SOA yields increased with an increase in the acidity of seed particles (solid/near-solid state) at low SOA mass loadings, when compared with the seed particle amounts. Acidity dependence analysis of the chemical formula, molecular mass, and O:C ratio of the detected compounds indicated the enhanced formation of multiple oligomers in the wide molecular mass range with a wide range of O:C ratios under acidic seed conditions. The peak abundances of some chemical compounds increased with an increase in the acidity of seed particles (e.g., m/z 197, 311, 313, 339, 355, and 383), while decreases in the peak abundances of some chemical compounds were observed (e.g., m/z 171, 185, 215, 343, and 357). The acidity dependence could be explained by acid-catalyzed heterogeneous reactions or acid-catalyzed decomposition of hydroperoxides. In addition, organosulfate (OS) formation was observed under acidic seed conditions. Six out of the 11 detected OSs were potentially formed via the aldehyde + HSO4- pathway.

Precise control of plasma shape parameters, such as elongation and triangularity is duly needed to achieve high-performance tokamak plasmas, for which we propose adaptive search schemes of (1) optimum regularization parameter for the Tikhonov regularization, and (2) control points to specify the key shape parameters such as elongation and triangularity. Many control points that exceed the number of actuator coils become an ill-conditioned problem, which is successfully resolved by Tikhonov regularization with adaptively optimized free parameters. Furthermore, we develop dynamically changed control points by using the Cauchy Condition Surface scheme, where elongation and triangularity become direct control values. By virtue of both the adaptive Tikhonov regularization scheme and the dynamic control point, we achieved accurate shape control with elongation up to 1.93 and triangularity up to 0.65 in JT-60SA, where the allowable speed for the change of the elongation is 0.1 s ^−1 . We also verified the resilience of our developed our logics to the noises. The sequence of the result will contribute to enhance equilibrium controllability in upcoming JT-60SA experiments and provide the robust shape parameter control scheme for ITER and DEMO.

Characteristics of the early current quench (CQ) time in mitigated disruptions are studied for a full-current (5.5 MA) scenario in the JT-60SA superconducting tokamak. Self-consistent evolution of the plasma temperature and current density profiles during the early CQ phase before the plasma moves vertically is simulated using the axisymmetric disruption code INDEX for given impurity source profiles. It is shown that the hollow (flat) impurity density profiles peaks (flattens) the current density, and it causes a temporal change in the internal inductance in this phase. However the resultant CQ time is found to be insensitive to the impurity source profile for the same assimilated quantity. The simulation results are interpreted by the L/R model including the temporal change in the internal inductance as well as the effect of a gap between the plasma and the conducting vessel structures and stabilizing plates. This results will improve the accuracy to estimate the amount of impurity assimilated into plasma from the observed CQ rate in the massive gas injection (MGI) experiment planned in JT-60SA. The accessible range in which the CQ time can be scanned as well as the electron densities to suppress runaway electrons is also shown for different injected amounts of neon, argon, and their deuterium mixture under the limitation of the MGI gas amount. Mitigated disruptions in JT-60SA typically lead to the CQ time shorter than the vessel wall time, which is expected to produce relevant contributions to disruption mitigation in ITER and future reactors.

Studies of the volatility distribution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from aromatic compounds are limited compared with SOA from biogenic monoterpenes. In this study, the volatility distribution was investigated by composition, heating, and dilution measurements for SOA formed from the photooxidation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene in the presence of NOx. Composition studies revealed that highly oxygenated monomers (C9H14Ox, x = 4–7) and dimers (C18H26Ox, x = 8–12) are the major products in SOA particles. Highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) with five or more oxygens were formed during photochemical aging, whereas dimers degraded during photochemical aging. HOMs with five or more oxygens may be produced from the photooxidation of phenol-type gaseous products, whereas dimers in the particle phase may be photolyzed to smaller molecules during photochemical aging. The results of composition, heating, and dilution measurements showed that fresh SOA that formed from 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) photooxidation includes low-volatility compounds with  µg m−3 saturation concentrations, which are attributed to dimers. Similar results were reported for α-pinene SOA in previous studies. Low-volatility compounds with  µg m−3 saturation concentrations are not included in the volatility distributions employed in the standard volatility basis-set (VBS) approach. Improvements in the organic aerosol model will be necessary for the study of anthropogenic SOA as well as biogenic SOA.

Ultracold molecules are suitable platforms for precision measurements due to their internal degrees of freedom. Here the authors derive a limit on the variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio by using the spectroscopy of ultracold KRb molecules.

The magnetic flux density change ΔB caused by the inverse magnetostrictive effect is key for achieving high-performance vibration power generation. As the magnetization curve of the polycrystalline Fe–47.6 at. % Co–2.3 at. % V (Fe–Co–V) alloy became easier to magnetize by applying tensile stresses, the value of ΔB estimated from the magnetization curves depended significantly on magnetic fields. Hence, the vibration power generation of a U-shaped unimorph device using a polycrystalline Fe–Co–V alloy core was demonstrated under various bias magnetic fields. As a result of bias magnetic field adjustment, the open-circuit voltage induced by the vibration of the device improved to ∼7.0 V. Such superior performance is attributable to a large ΔB of 1.1 T in the Fe–Co–V alloy core. Therefore, adjustment of bias magnetic fields is essential for obtaining large ΔB in Fe–Co–V alloys, which are promising inverse magnetostrictive materials for high-performance vibration power generation.

The plasma startup with ITER-relevant sub-mPa neutral pressures in the JT-60SA superconducting tokamak is studied using a zero-dimensional (0D) power balance model for the plasma burn-through phase. In the ohmic startup scenario assumed here, the lower limit of the operational neutral pressure is determined by the condition for the Townsend avalanche at a high $E/p$ limit, whereas the upper limit depends on the available ohmic heating power for the burn-through with the base power supply (PS) of the superconducting coils, corresponding to 0.2–0.3 V m ^−1 . The operational conditions that lead to RE generation are evaluated to mitigate the risk of RE discharges. The simulation shows that startup REs are generated during the temperature rise immediately after the burn-through under relatively low-density conditions, and then the RE current value is gradually increased in balance with the RE loss processes on the timescale of I _p ramp-up. Therefore, it is expected that REs can be avoided or mitigated if the electron density during the early build-up phase is tuned by a combination of prefill gas and additional fuelling. However, a startup with an excessive prefill gas will lose the margin of the density control, and a full RE discharge can be triggered when the plasma burn-through fails owing to a high concentration of impurities such as oxygen, if the operational point is marginal to the burn-through limit. The present modelling work implies that preparing the operation with sufficient margins against the failure of impurity burn-through is important for mitigating the risk of unintended plasma termination. Although the carbon wall environment may have a lower risk of RE generation, to alleviate the operational uncertainties of the new device, strategies for expanding the operational window are also discussed in support of JT-60SA initial operation.

When the severe accident or some crucial troubles happen in nuclear power plants, the stop of coolant system and the increase in temperature to far exceeding from the normal operating condition could be predicted. The sudden increase in temperature would change microstructure of structural materials. In order to investigate the influence of annealing on microstructure development, in-situ electron irradiation experiment was carried out in 316L model alloy.Electron irradiation at 288 °C resulted in the formation of black dots, Flank loops and cavities in 316L model alloy. Black dots and Frank loops formed in the early stage of electron-irradiation and transferred to Flank loops and perfect loops, respectively. Annealing experiment at 500 °C for 120 min indicated that the number density and the mean size of Frank loops decreased after annealing. In addition, the mean size of cavities decreased, while the number density seemed not to be changed after annealing. Comparing the size distribution change before and after annealing experiment, it is suggested that Frank loops could be shrunk as a result of absorbing vacancies released from cavities during annealing. Traditional yield curve analysis shows that semi-volatile organic compounds are a major component of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). We investigated the volatility distribution of SOAs from α-pinene ozonolysis using positive electrospray ionization mass analysis and dilution- and heat-induced evaporation measurements. Laboratory chamber experiments were conducted on α-pinene ozonolysis, in the presence and absence of OH scavengers. Among these, we identified not only semi-volatile products, but also less volatile highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) and dimers. Ozonolysis products were further exposed to OH radicals to check the effects of photochemical aging. HOMs were also formed during OH-initiated photochemical aging. The emission characteristics of refractory black carbon (rBC) from biomass burning are essential information for numerical simulations of regional pollution and climate effects. We conducted combustion experiments in the laboratory to investigate the emission ratio and mixing state of rBC from the burning of wheat straw and rapeseed plants, which are the main crops cultivated in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. A single particle soot photometer (SP2) was used to measure rBC-containing particles at high temporal resolution and with high accuracy. The combustion state of each burning case was indicated by the modified combustion efficiency (MCE), which is calculated using the integrated enhancement of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide concentrations relative to their background values. The mass size distribution of the rBC particles showed a lognormal shape with a mode mass equivalent diameter (MED) of 189 nm (ranging from 152 to 215 nm), assuming an rBC density of 1.8 g cm−3. rBC particles less than 80 nm in size (the lower detection limit of the SP2) accounted for ∼ 5 % of the total rBC mass, on average. The emission ratios, which are expressed as ΔrBC ∕ ΔCO (Δ indicates the difference between the observed and background values), displayed a significant positive correlation with the MCE values and varied between 1.8 and 34 ng m−3 ppbv−1. Multi-peak fitting analysis of the delay time (Δt, or the time of occurrence of the scattering peak minus that of the incandescence peak) distribution showed that rBC-containing particles with rBC MED = 200 ± 10 nm displayed two peaks at Δt = 1.7 µs and Δt = 3.2 µs, which could be attributed to the contributions from both flaming and smoldering combustion in each burning case. Both the Δt values and the shell / core ratios of the rBC-containing particles clearly increased as the MCE decreased from 0.98 (smoldering-dominant combustion) to 0.86 (flaming-dominant combustion), implying the great importance of the rapid condensation of semi-volatile organics. This laboratory study found that the mixing state of rBC particles from biomass burning strongly depends on its combustion processes, and overall MCE should be taken carefully into consideration while the climate effect of rBC particles from open biomass burning is simulated.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an important pathogen in healthcare-associated infections. S. maltophilia may contain Smqnr, a quinolone resistance gene encoding the pentapeptide repeat protein, which confers low-level quinolone resistance upon expression in a heterologous host. We investigated the prevalence of Smqnr and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants in S. maltophilia isolates from Japan. A total of 181 consecutive and nonduplicate clinical isolates of S. maltophilia were collected from four areas of Japan. The antimicrobial susceptibility profiles for these strains were determined. PCR was conducted for Smqnr and PMQR genes, including qnrA, qnrB, qnrC, qnrS, aac(6′)-Ib and qepA. PCR products for Smqnr and aac(6′)-Ib were sequenced. For the S. maltophilia isolates containing Smqnr, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was performed using XbaI. Resistance rates to ceftazidime, levofloxacin, trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol and minocycline were 67.4%, 6.1%, 17.7%, 8.8% and 0%, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration required to inhibit the growth of 50% and 90% of organisms were 0.5 and 2 mg/L for moxifloxacin but 1 and 4 mg/L for levofloxacin, respectively. Smqnr was detected in 104 of the 181 S. maltophilia isolates (57.5%), and the most frequent was Smqnr6, followed by Smqnr8 and Smqnr11. Eleven novel variants from Smqnr48 to Smqnr58 were detected. The 24 Smqnr-containing S. maltophilia isolates were typed by PFGE and divided into 21 unique types. Nine S. maltophilia isolates (5.0%) carried aac(6′)-Ib-cr. No qnr or qepA genes were detected. This study describes a high prevalence of Smqnr and novel variants of Smqnr among S. maltophilia from Japan. Continuous antimicrobial surveillance and further molecular epidemiological studies on quinolone resistance in S. maltophilia are needed.

Open biomass burning (OBB) emits significant amounts of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), and the mixing of OBB with urban plumes could exacerbate regional ozone (O3) pollution. In the present study, an observational field campaign was performed in a rural area at the northern edge of the Yangtze River Delta region (YRDR) from 15 May to 24 June 2010, during intensive open burning of wheat residues. The net photochemical production rate of oxidant (Ox = O3 + NO2) at the site was evaluated based on a box model (Regional Atmospheric Chemical Mechanism, Version 2) constrained by real-time ambient measurements (e.g., O3, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), NOx (NO2 + NO), J values). Our results showed that both in situ photochemistry and direct transport from urban areas in the YRDR were responsible for the high Ox concentration at the site. During an OBB-impact case, net photochemical production of Ox in the daytime was pronounced, with a 6 h averaged Ox production rate of 13 ± 4 ppbv h−1 (maximum value of 21 ppbv h−1 at 12:00 CST). Photochemical Oxproduction changed from VOC-limited in the morning to NOx-limited in the afternoon due to the rapid photochemical consumption of NOx during the day. A combined analysis with positive matrix factorization demonstrated that O3 pollution in the rural area of the YRDR was largely affected by urban emission, and OBB-related emissions also contributed to in situ photochemical production, particularly in the afternoon. Our study suggested that a joint effort in reducing both NMHCs (e.g., aromatics) and NOx emissions in the urban area, as well as local OBB activities, may be effective in eliminating high-O3 pollution risk in the rural areas of the YRDR.

We conducted an intensive field campaign at the summit of Mt. Tai (36.26° N, 117.11° E, 1534 m above sea level), Shandong Province, located at the center of central East China, during the period 28 May to 30 June 2006, to study seasonal maxima of regional air pollution with respect to ozone (O3) and aerosols. The specific objectives, campaign design, and major findings are summarized. High concentrations of O3 and its precursors, and aerosols, were detected and studied in the context of annual variations. Most importantly, we identified that emissions from regional-scale open crop residue burning after the harvesting of winter wheat, together with photochemical aging, strongly increased the concentrations of O3, aerosols, and primary pollutants in this month of year. Studies of in situ photochemical activity, regional source attribution of O3, O3–aerosol interactions, validation of satellite observations of tropospheric NO2, behaviors of volatile organic compounds and organic/inorganic aerosol species, loss rates of black carbon (BC), and instrument inter-comparisons are also summarized. The observed BC levels must have a strong impact on the regional climate.
