We observed the atomic 1s and 2p states of π^{-} bound to ^{121}Sn nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ^{122}Sn(d,^{3}He) nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve a potential of discovery, which includes the capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The 2p state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experimental results of other Sn isotopes. The spectrum is measured at finite reaction angles for the first time. The formation cross sections at the reaction angles between 0° and 2° are determined. The observed reaction-angle dependence of each state is reproduced by theoretical calculations. However, the quantitative comparison with our high-precision data reveals a significant discrepancy between the measured and calculated formation cross sections of the pionic 1s state.

Excitation spectra of ^{11}C are measured in the ^{12}C(p,d) reaction near the η^{'} emission threshold. A proton beam extracted from the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI with an incident energy of 2.5 GeV impinges on a carbon target. The momenta of deuterons emitted at 0° are precisely measured with the fragment separator (FRS) operated as a spectrometer. In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound η^{'}-mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures are observed associated with the formation of bound states. The spectra are analyzed to set stringent constraints on the formation cross section and on the hitherto barely known η^{'}-nucleus interaction.

We review recent claims of the existence of deeply bound kaonic states in nuclei. Also we study in details the (K-,p) reaction on C12 with 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, based on which a deep kaon nucleus optical potential was claimed in [1]. In our Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction we include not only the quasi-elastic K- p scattering, as in [1], but also K- absorption by one and two nucleons followed by the decay of the hyperon in pi N, which can also produce strength in the region of interest. The final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary particles on their way out of the nucleus is also considered. We will show that all these additional mechanisms allow us to explain the observed spectrum with a "standard" shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models. [1] T. We make a theoretical study of the kaon absorption in flight on nuclei with a kaon beam of 1 GeV momentum, paying special attention to the forward and energetic emitted protons, which were used to claim a deep kaon nucleus optical potential in a recent experiment. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction, which allows to account not only for quasi‐elastic K−p scattering, but also for the other processes which contribute to the proton spectra and which are not taken into account by the ordinary Green’s function method analysis. The experiment looks for fast protons, but in coincidence with at least one charged particle in a decay counters sandwiching the target. The coincidence requirement is assumed not to distort the shape of the proton spectra, but we show that this is not the case and as a consequence the conclusions drawn from the experimental analysis do not hold.

We study theΛ formation cross sections andΛ polarizations based on the Regge pole amplitudes in theπ−+12C→Λ+X(inclusive) reactions and the exclusive kaon channel reactions atp π =4 GeV/c. We found that the experimental data of inclusive cross sections can be reproduced qualitatively well by our calculation. As for the polarization, we have the experimental data that were reported by two different groups, although they have opposite sign and different magnitudes. Our calculated results do not agree with either set of data. We show that the sign of polarization is sensitive to the outgoingΛ kinetic energy in the inclusive reactions and to the outgoing kaon angle in the exclusive kaon channel reactions.

We have investigated the neutrino induced coherent pion production reaction at the energies of interest for recent experiments like K2K and MiniBooNE. The model includes pion, nucleon and the Delta(1232) resonance. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function are taken into account. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications in the energy distributions of the final pion. The sensitivity of the results on the axial N-Delta coupling C5A(0) and the coherent fraction in neutral-current pi0 production are discussed., Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions in the Few-GeV Region (NuInt07)

We study the $(\gamma,p)$ reaction on $^{208}Pb$ leading to $^{207}Pb$ with a bound pion attached to it in the lowest 1s or 2p pionic levels. The reaction can be made recoilless to optimize the production cross section but we must choose a bit higher photon energy to overcome the Coulomb barrier in the proton emission. The cross sections obtained are easily measurable and can be larger than 50 per cent of the background from inclusive ($\gamma$,p). This makes it a clear case for the detection of the pionic atom signals, converting this reaction into a practical tool to produce deeply bound pionic atoms., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, revised version to be published in Phys. We observed well-separated 1s and 2p pi(-) states in 205Pb in the 206Pb(d,3He) reaction at T(d) = 604.3 MeV. The binding energies and the widths determined are B(1s) = 6.762+/-0.061 MeV, Gamma(1s) = 0.764(+0.154)(-0.171) MeV, B(2p) = 5.110+/-0.045 MeV, and Gamma(2p) = 0.321(-0.062)(+0.060) MeV. They are used to deduce the real and imaginary strengths of the s-wave part of the pion-nucleus interaction, which translates into a positive mass shift of pi(-) in 205Pb.

We study $(n,d)$ and (d,$^3$He) reactions on $^{208}Pb$ leading to deeply bound pionic atoms with one neutron hole being left. We develop a theoretical model to calculate cross sections of deeply bound pionic atoms and quasi-elastic pion production. The results are compared with data which have been obtained so far. We study the light ion induced reactions at intermediate energies theoretically. We show that (3He, t) reactions on unstable nuclei are useful tool to investigate the surface of the unstable nuclei and isospin dependence of the ∆ excitation mechanism in nuclei. We also show that (α, α′) reactions on proton target are interesting since we can observe Roper resonance excited by σ-meson exchange. In both cases we can get interesting results by making use of properties of the light ions.
