Abstract: Abstract We report the results of a search for a new vector boson ( $$ A'$$ A ′ ) decaying into two dark matter particles $$\chi _1 \chi _2$$ χ 1 χ 2 of different mass. The heavier $$\chi _2$$ χ 2 particle subsequently decays to $$\chi _1$$ χ 1 and an off-shell Dark Photon $$ A'^* \rightarrow e^+e^-$$ A ′ ∗ → e + e - . For a sufficiently large mass splitting, this model can explain in terms of new physics the recently confirmed discrepancy observed in the muon anomalous magnetic moment at Fermilab. Remarkably, it also predicts the observed yield of thermal dark matter relic abundance. A detailed Monte-Carlo simulation was used to determine the signal yield and detection efficiency for this channel in the NA64 setup. The results were obtained re-analyzing the previous NA64 searches for an invisible decay $$A'\rightarrow \chi \overline{\chi }$$ A ′ → χ χ ¯ and axion-like or pseudo-scalar particles $$a \rightarrow \gamma \gamma $$ a → γ γ . With this method, we exclude a significant portion of the parameter space justifying the muon g-2 anomaly and being compatible with the observed dark matter relic density for $$A'$$ A ′ masses from 2 $$m_e$$ m e up to 390 MeV and mixing parameter $$\varepsilon $$ ε between $$3\times 10^{-5}$$ 3 × 10 - 5 and $$2\times 10^{-2}$$ 2 × 10 - 2 .

Abstract: Abstract Recently, the ATOMKI experiment has reported new evidence for the excess of $$e^+e^-$$ e + e - events with a mass $$\sim $$ ∼ 17 MeV in the nuclear transitions of $$^4$$ 4 He, that they previously observed in measurements with $$^8$$ 8 Be. These observations could be explained by the existence of a new vector $$X17$$ X 17 boson. So far, the search for the decay $$X17 \rightarrow e^+ e^-$$ X 17 → e + e - with the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS gave negative results. Here, we present a new technique that could be implemented in NA64 aiming to improve the sensitivity and to cover the remaining $$X17$$ X 17 parameter space. If a signal-like event is detected, an unambiguous observation is achieved by reconstructing the invariant mass of the $$X17$$ X 17 decay with the proposed method. To reach this goal an optimization of the $$X17$$ X 17 production target, as well as an efficient and accurate reconstruction of two close decay tracks, is required. A dedicated analysis of the available experimental data making use of the trackers information is presented. This method provides independent confirmation of the NA64 published results [1], validating the tracking procedure. The detailed Monte Carlo study of the proposed setup and the background estimate show that the goal of the proposed search is feasible.

Abstract: A search for a new Z^{'} gauge boson associated with (un)broken B-L symmetry in the keV-GeV mass range is carried out for the first time using the missing-energy technique in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. From the analysis of the data with 3.22×10^{11} electrons on target collected during 2016-2021 runs, no signal events were found. This allows us to derive new constraints on the Z^{'}-e coupling strength, which, for the mass range 0.3≲m_{Z^{'}}≲100 MeV, are more stringent compared to those obtained from the neutrino-electron scattering data.

Abstract: New results for the double spin asymmetry A(1)(p) and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g(1)(p) are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. They improve the statistical precision of g(1)(p)(x) by about a factor of two in the region x less than or similar to 0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g(1) world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, Delta Sigma, ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g(1)(p). The uncertainty of Delta Sigma is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g(1)(NS) (x, Q(2)) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants vertical bar gA/gV vertical bar = 1.22 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.10 (syst.), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9%.

Abstract: The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced pi(-) pi(-) pi(+) final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, 0.5 < m(3 pi) < 2.5 GeV/c(2), and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, 0.1 < t' < 1.0 (GeV/c)(2). This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant 3 pi production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected 3p partial waves with J(PC) = 0(-+) ,1(++) ,2(-+) ,2(++) ,and 4(++). In these waves, we observe the well-known groundstate mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson a(1)(1420) decaying into f(0) (980)pi. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the pi(-)pi(+) subsystem with I(G)J(PC) = 0(+)0(++) in various partial waves from the pi(-)pi(-)pi(+) data. Evidence is found for correlation of the f (0)(980) and f(0)(1500) appearing as intermediate pi(-)pi(+) isobars in the decay of the known pi(1800) and pi(2)(1880).

8. Dissociation of relativistic7Li in photoemulsion and structure of7Li nucleus

Abstract: The dissociation of relativistic 7Li nuclei was studied with the photoemulsion technique. The nuclear photoemulsions have been exposed in the beam of 7Li at the momentum of 3 A GeV/c at the JINR synchrophasotron in Dubna. Along the scanned length 239.76 m of 7Li tracks, 1675 inelastic interactions have been found. For the first time the coherent dissociation of the relativistic 7Li nuclei into the (α + t) channel in the nuclear photoemulsion has been detected. The mean free path of this channel in emulsion is equal to 5.4 m and corresponds to the cross section which is equal to 23 ± 5 mb. Previously in the dissociation of the relativistic 6Li nuclei it was found that the main di-cluster configuration of the ground state of 6Li manifests itself as the main channel of coherent dissociation into α-particle and deuteron. The close values of relative yields and kinematic features of these two-particle dissociation channels of 7Li and 6Li suggest that a similar di-cluster configuration consisting of α-particle core and bound together outer nucleons predominates in the dissociating nuclei at relativistic energies also. The data presented prove the validity of the relativistic nuclei dissociation as an effective complementary method for the study of nuclear structure.

Abstract: We have measured the polarization of Λ\LambdaΛ hyperons produced inclusively by a Σ−\Sigma^-Σ− beam of 340 GeV/c momentum in nuclear targets. From a sample of 9.5 millions of identified Λ\LambdaΛ decays, polarizations were determined in the range xF>0.1x_F \gt 0.1xF>0.1 and pt≤1.6p_t\leq 1.6pt≤1.6 GeV/c . The polarization w.r.t. the production normal is mainly positive for xF≥0.3x_F \geq 0.3xF≥0.3. At fixed values of xFx_FxF, it increases with ptp_tpt to a maximum between pt=0.5p_t = 0.5pt=0.5 and pt=1p_t = 1pt=1 GeV/c , and then decreases to zero or even negative values, in sharp contrast to the plateau above pt=1p_t = 1pt=1 GeV/c observed in inclusive Λ\LambdaΛ production by protons.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the inclusive cross sections of $\Lambda$ , $\overline\Lambda$ , K 0 S , $\overline{\Xi}^{+}$ $\Omega^{-}$ production by $\Sigma^-$ and $\pi^-$ of 345 GeV/c momentum and by neutrons of 260 GeV/c mean momentum in copper and carbon. The differential cross sections as function of p 2 t show a distinct non-gaussian behavior above 1.2 (GeV/c)2. A comparison of the xF-dependence of $\Lambda$ , $\overline\Lambda$ and K0 production with calculations using PYTHIA and the QGSM model is discussed.

Abstract: The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the reaction $\pi^- \gamma \rightarrow \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ embedded in the Primakoff reaction of $190~\textrm{GeV}$ pions scattering in the Coulomb field of a lead target, $\pi^- \text{Pb} \rightarrow \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ \text{Pb}$. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at momentum transfer below $0.001~(\text{GeV}/c)^2$. Using a partial-wave analysis the amplitudes and relative phases of the $a_2(1320)$ and $\pi_2(1670)$ mesons have been extracted, and the Coulomb and the diffractive contributions have been disentangled. Measuring absolute production cross sections we have determined the radiative width of the $a_2(1320)$ to be $\Gamma_0(a_2(1320) \rightarrow \pi\gamma) = (358 \pm 6_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 42_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV}$. As the first measurement, $\Gamma_0(\pi_2(1670) \rightarrow \pi\gamma) = (181 \pm 11_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 27_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV} \cdot (\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 \pi}/\textrm{BR}_{f_2 \pi})$ is obtained for the radiative width of the $\pi_2(1670)$, where in this analysis the branching ratio $\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 \pi}=0.56$ has been used. Abstract: We analyse the multifractal structure of moments Gq in terms of a new variable X on data of 197Au, 32S and 16O induced interactions with emulsion nuclei and Monte Carlo generated samples. The dynamical properties of the produced particles are mapped onto multifractal spectra. We compare ln G in experimental data of 197Au, 32S and 16O with pure statistical fluctuations. It is shown that the stochasticity plays an important role for the G-moments.

Abstract: The complete charge distribution of products from Au nuclei fragmenting in nuclear emulsion at 10.7A GeV has been measured. Multiplicities of produced particles and particles associated with the target source are used to select peripheral and central events. A statistical analysis, based on event-by-event charge distributions, show that a population of subcritical, critical and supercritical events, i.e. a phase transition like behaviour, is observed among peripheral collisions.

Abstract: The cross section for production of charged hadrons with high transversemomenta in scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off nucleons at low photonvirtualities has been measured at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The results,which cover transverse momenta from 1.1 to 3.6 GeV/c, are compared to anext-to-leading order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (NLO pQCD)calculation in order to evaluate the applicability of pQCD to this process inthe kinematic domain of the experiment. The shape of the calculateddifferential cross section as a function of transverse momentum is found to bein good agreement with the experimental data, but the normalization isunderestimated by NLO pQCD. This discrepancy may point towards the relevance ofterms beyond NLO in the pQCD framework. The dependence of the cross section onthe pseudo-rapidity and on the charge of the hadrons is also discussed.

Abstract: The mechanism for producing slow, target associated particles in high energy heavy ion collisions is investigated. It is shown that the same mechanism which was proposed for hadron induced interactions is likely to appear also for heavy-ion reactions. The results indicate however a much weaker correlation between impact parameter and yield of slow particles.

Abstract: The fragmentation topology of28Si at 3.7A GeV and 14.6A GeV and32S at 200A GeV in reactions with emulsion nuclei is presented. The fragmentation cross sections are very similar at all three energies. A statistical percolation model can qualitatively describe the data forZ≥ 6. The He production is underestimated and the 3 ≤Z ≤ 5 fragments overestimated by this model.

Abstract: In this talk we will present some of the recent results from the experiments E863 and EMU12 using the BNL AGS Au-beam at 11.6 A GeV/c and the CERN SPS Pb-beam at 158 A GeV, respectively. Aspects on the particle production and on the target break-up will be discussed. The results are compared with model expectations. The lead data is here shown for the first time.

Abstract: Charged particle pseudorapidity density distributions in Au induced reactions in nuclear emulsion at 10.7 A GeV have been measured. In peripheral events the shower particle distribution exhibits a two peak structure while in central collisions it has a Gaussian shape. The spectator protons appear in the second peak in the pseudorapidity spectra and exhibits a broader momentum distribution than expected from Fermi motion. The produced particle yield in central collisions is not substantially different from phenomenological descriptions based on data from O and S induced reactions.

Abstract: Angular distributions of projectile-associated He fragments from Au induced reactions in nuclear emulsions at 10.7 A GeV have been measured with a precision of ±0.1 mrad. Two emission components are indubitably appearing, one representing fragmentation of a fermionic system while the other one exhibits large transverse momentum transfer. Possible explanations for the latter component are discussed.

Abstract: The first rapidity density distributions from relativistic collisions between truly heavy nuclei are presented. The distributions are compared with expectations from a linear extrapolation of results obtained from collisions with lighter nuclei. Fluctuations are essentially described by a simple scenario with stochastic emission.

Abstract: We use scaled factorial cumulant moments to analyze pseudorapidity fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions. This approach is similar to the method of scaled factorial moments except that it removes the effects of lower-order correlations upon a given moment. Significant second-order cumulants and cumulant indices (slopes with respect to bin size) are found for all of the interactions studied. These indices are found to have an inverse dependence upon average pseudorapidity particle density.

Abstract: This paper presents data on the emission of helium fragments due to break up of 200 A GeV 32S ions in collision with emulsion nuclei. A total of 499 minimum bias events have been studied in an emulsion stack and 97 events in emulsion chambers. Emission angles of He fragments have been measured with high precision. This data has been compared with data of breakup of heavier as well as lighter projectiles and we observe that the value of the momentum spread, σ(p), increases with increasing projectile mass. Abstract: Non-statistical fluctuations are used to probe the dynamical behaviour of multi-particle production in heavy-ion interactions at ultra-relativistic energies. In a one-dimensional analysis a 1〈ϱ〉-scaling is established and it is furthermore found that effects from higher-order particle correlations are small. In a two-dimensional analysis it is shown that a small background of particle pairs with a narrow opening angle can distort the observed signal. As an example we estimate the influence of γ-conversion and find that in our experiment γ-conversion alone gives results consistent with the experimental observations from a two-dimensional analysis. Whereas a two-dimensional analysis filters events where two particles are extremely close in phase space, the one-dimensional analysis picks out events with particles clustered in pseudorapidity, which are at the same time diluted in the azimuthal plane.

Abstract: The energy and centrality dependence of local particle pseudorapidity densities as well as validity of various parametrizations of the distributions are examined. The dispersion, σ, of the rapidity density distribution of produced particles varies slowly with centrality and is 0.80, 0.98, 1.21 and 1.41 for central interactions at 3.7, 14.6, 60 and 200A GeV incident energy, respectively, σ is found to be independent of the size of the interacting system at fixed energy. A novel way of representing the window dependence of the multiplicity as normalized variance versus inverse average multiplicity is outlined.

Abstract: The mass, energy, and centrality dependence of rapidity density distributions of relativistic, charged particles, produced in heavy-ion interactions in the energy range 4A–200A GeV, are investigated. The results indicate that the rapidity density distributions show systematic variations, which are used to predict distributions for Au+Au and Pb+Pb interactions in a model-independent way.

Abstract: The EMU01 Collaboration has employed emulsion chamber and pellicle detectors to accumulate a large database of heavy nucleus interactions. Samples include both minimum bias and central collisions, analyzed in a uniform manner to extract multiplicities and angular distributions of charged particles and nuclear fragments. We find that the main features of these distribution are well represented by geometrical superposition models. A unique feature of EMU01 is the use of emulsion chambers with thin foil targets to observe produced particle angular distributions with exceptionally high precision, permitting extension of fluctuations and correlations analyses beyond the resolution limits imposed by other experimental techniques. The data are generally well reproduced by interaction simulations such as FRITIOF (the Lund monte carlo for nuclear collisons) which include only conventional physics effects. However, the analysis of fluctuations and correlations via factorial moment and cumulant techniques yields some suggestive results which require further investigation, both by continued analysis of existing data and from Au and Pb beam exposures scheduled for the next few years.

Abstract: The scaling behaviour in the fragmentation regions is investigated for16O-Em interactions from 3.7 to 200A GeV. It is found that in both the projectile- and the target-fragmentation regions, the multiplicity and pseudo-rapidity distributions as well as the two-particle pseudo-rapidity correlations are independent of incident energy. The intermittency indices at 14.6, 60 and 200A GeV are the same within the experimental errors, indicating that the limiting fragmentation hypothesis works with regard to dynamical as well as statistical fluctuations.

Abstract: The slow, target associated particles produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion interactions are a quantitative probe of the cascading processes in the spectator parts of the target nucleus. These processes are directly influenced by the proper timescale for the formation of hadronic matter. In this letter we show experimental data on singly and multiply charged particles, with velocities smaller than 0.7 c , produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion interactions in nuclear emulsion.

Abstract: In this letter we show that most of the fluctuations in particle densities observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are consistent with stochastic emission, i.e., most of the correlations between produced particles are washed out due to the vast number of particles in the environment. We further explore the general trends by investigating different systems, energies and centrality cuts. Comparisons with the Fritiof model show that string fragmentation gives results similar to the data.

Abstract: In the present letter we discuss the general features of the multiplicity distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is shown that from simple statistical considerations it is possible to predict the dependence of the dispersions of multiplicity distributions on the average multiplicities in any given rapidty wwindow. The applicability of the negative binomial distribution to multiplicity distributions from collisions with heavy ions is discussed.

Abstract: The average multiplicities of singly charged relativistic particles in oxygen-induced interactions with a nuclear emulsion target are studied over the energy range 2.1–200 A GeV. A similar energy dependence as for proton-induced interactions is observed. Both the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary collisions are shown to be of importance for the particle production.

Abstract: The multiplicity distributions of low-energetic target-associated particles from 200 A GeV oxygen-induced interactions with emulsion nuclei are presented. The experimental distributions are compared with distributions obtained using the Ranft and Fritiof simulation codes. It is found that the intra-nuclear cascade plays an important role in ion-induced interactions, similar to what is the case for hadron-induced interactions.

Abstract: We report on recent results obtained by the EMUO1 collaboration from studies of 16O + emulsion, at 14.6, 60 and 200 A GeV, and 32S + emulsion and 32S + Au interactions at 200 A GeV. Shower-particle production in oxygen-induced interactions are studied over the energy range 2.1-200 A GeV. Scaling and limiting fragmentation are observed. Multiplicity and angular distributions of low energy target-associated particles are presented and compared with distributions obtained using the Ranft and the Fritiof simulation codes.

Abstract: We report on a high-statistics search for the {theta}(1540){sup +} resonance in {sigma}{sup -}-nucleus collisions at 340 GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance was found in our data sample which contains 13 million K{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays above background. For the decay channel {theta}{sup +}{yields}K{sub s}{sup 0}p and the kinematic range x{sub F}> 0.05, we find the production cross section to be BR({theta}{sup +}{yields}K{sub s}{sup 0}p){sigma}{sub 0}

Abstract: We report on a high statistics search for the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}(1860)$ resonance in ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$-nucleus collisions at $340\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}∕c$. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ candidates above background. For the decay channel ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}(1860)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and the kinematic range $0.15l{x}_{F}l0.9$ we find a $3\ensuremath{\sigma}$ upper limit for the production cross section of 3.1 and $3.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{b}$ per nucleon for reactions with carbon and copper, respectively.

Abstract: We have measured the production of strange baryons and antibaryons in 340-GeV/c Sigma /sup -/+C and 260-GeV/c n+C interactions. The single x/sub F/ distributions show the expected leading particle effect, and the single p/sub t//sup 2/ distributions show a distinct nonthermal behavior. The x/sub F/ distributions of Lambda - Lambda pairs indicate two different phase space distributions for the two coincident baryons. On the other hand two Lambda 's show identical distributions. Momentum conservation during the formation process may represent a significant source for the observed behavior.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the differential cross sections of inclusive $K^{\pm}_{890}$ production in $\sigma^-, pi^-$ and neutron beams. A strong leading particle effect was observed for $K^-_{890}$ production by $\sigma^-$ . The measured $x_F$ –distributions are compared with calculations based on the Lund model (PYTHIA) and the quark-gluon string model.

Abstract: Measurements have been made of inclusive 525 GeV [pi][sup [minus]] interactions in emulsion. The results are compared to proton-emulsion and lower energy pion-emulsion data. Average multiplicities of relativistic shower particles increase with increasing energy, although with a somewhat steeper slope above 60 GeV than at lower energies. The ratio [l angle][ital n][sub [ital s]][r angle][sub [ital p]]/[l angle][ital n][sub [ital s]][r angle][sub [pi]][similar to]1.1 over the energy range 60--525 GeV. The ratio of the dispersion in the multiplicity distribution to the average multiplicity is the same for proton and pion collisions in emulsion, and is independent of projectile energy. The shape of the shower particle multiplicity distribution does not vary significantly with energy, and KNO scaling appears to hold over the energy range 60--525 GeV. The shower particle pseudorapidity distributions are independent of the beam energy in the target and projectile fragmentation regions, and both the pseudorapidity and multiplicity distributions agree reasonably well with the FRITIOF model predictions for 525 GeV pions. The dependence of the shower particle multiplicity [l angle][ital n][sub [ital s]][r angle] on the number of heavy tracks [ital N][sub [ital h]] appraoches saturation as the total shower particle energy becomes a significant fraction of [radical][ital s]more » , and the pseudorapidity distributions shift toward smaller [l angle][eta][r angle] with increasing numbers of grey and black tracks at 525 GeV. Neither the average number [l angle][ital N][sub [ital h]][r angle] nor the multiplicity distributions of the heavily ionizing tracks vary significantly with energy, and the normalized angular distributions of grey and black tracks are independent of the type of projectile or projectile energy.« less

Abstract: The recent status of the EMU01 experiment where nuclear emulsions are used as both target/detector material for horizontally exposed stacks and as detector for vertically exposed chamber plates is discussed. An investigation of the behaviour in the number of produced particles per participating nucleon reveal weak nonlinear effects for the most central collisions. Intermittency index can be obtained from the density distributions for S+Au and S+Ag interactions which corresponds to fractal dimensions somewhat smaller than unity.

Abstract: S+Au interactions at 200{ital A} GeV were observed using emulsion chambers, permitting measurement of pseudorapidities in the central region with precision {similar to}0.01 unit. Scaled-factorial-moment analyses are extended to bin sizes smaller than those accessible to other fixed-target experimental techniques. For a sample of 151 central collisions, moments are calculated using both horizontal'' and vertical'' analysis techniques. While the moments are found to rise (in a log-log plot) with decreasing pseudorapidity bin size {delta}{eta}, their slopes roll off to approximately zero for {delta}{eta}{lt}0.1.

Abstract: The pseudo-rapidity density distributions of shower particles (n s ) are measured in central inelastic S + Au and S + Ag,Br inter-actions. The extracted maximum energy densities, while being higher for Au than for Ag.Br interactions, were found to be similar to those obtained for oxygen emulsion interactions. The correlation between rapidity density and shower particle multiplicity shows a small deviation from the Lund Model Fritiof for the highest energy densities in S + Au interactions, whereas the bulk of the data yields satisfactory agreement.

Abstract: The multiplicity distributions of shower particles (ns) are measured in inclusive inelastic oxygen emulsion interactions. Scaling is observed in the normalized variable ns/〈ns〉 for 14.6, 60 and 200 AGeV. The dependence of 〈ns〉 on the charge flow in the forward direction (QZD) and the distribution of the number of participating projectile protons is examined. The normalized multiplicities as a function of QZD seem also to be independent of incident energies. A comparison with the Lund model Fritiof yields satisfactory agreement.

Abstract: We report on an experiment in which emulsion chambers were exposed to a beam of 200 A GeV 16 O at the CERN SPS. Pseudo-rapidity distributions are measured with high precision. Pseudo-rapidity densities of 140 particles per unit rapidity corresponding to an energy density of about 3 GeV/fm3 are observed. Pseudo-rapidity density distributions and fluctuations are found to satisfactorily agree with the Lund Monte Carlo model Fritiof, although new and unknown sources for fluctuations might still be present.

Abstract: The hybridized system including the nuclear-emulsion target and the magnetic Omega Prime spectrometer is described. The set-up was used in a CERN experiment for the measurement of lifetimes of charmed particles produced by tagged photons from the bremsstrahlung beam. The emulsion served simultaneously as a target and as a high-spatial-resolution vertex detector in order to recognize decay vertices and measure decay distances of charmed particles. In order to avoid the blackening of the emulsion due to electromagnetic interactions the targets were delivered into the beam position one at a time and removed automatically after suitable dosage. The Omega Prime spectrometer allowed the determination of the parameters of the secondary particles and the reconstruction of the interaction points in the emulsion with a high precision. The method used was very successful in finding photohadronic events and in separating a practically background free subsample with the production of pairs of charmed particles decaying inside the emulsion.

Abstract: The lifetimes of charmed hadrons photoproduced in nuclear emulsion have been computed from a practically background-free sample of 44 neutral particle decays and 42 charged-particle decays including 27D±, 11Λc+, 1Ds+ and 3 ambiguous decays. The values obtained are τ(D0, bar D0) = (3.6-0.8+1.2 ± 0.7) 10-13 s, τ(D±) = (5.0-1.0+1.5 ± 1.9) 10-13 s, τ(Λc+) = = (2.3-0.6+0.9 ± 0.4) 10-13 s. Branching ratios of various decay topologies were also obtained.
