1. Probing lepton flavor violation in meson decays with LHC data

Abstract

Abstract In this letter, we use LHC data from the Drell–Yan processes $$pp\rightarrow \ell _i\ell _j$$ p p → ℓ i ℓ j (with $$i\ne j$$ i ≠ j ) to derive model-independent upper limits on lepton-flavor-violating meson decays. Our analysis is based on an Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach and it does not require a specific assumption regarding the basis of effective operators. We find that current LHC data (140 $$\textrm{fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 ) already provides competitive limits on $${\mathcal {B}}(B\rightarrow \pi e \tau )$$ B ( B → π e τ ) and $${\mathcal {B}}(B\rightarrow \pi \mu \tau )$$ B ( B → π μ τ ) with respect to the ones obtained through experimental searches at the B-factories. Moreover, we derive upper limits on several decays that have not been searched for experimentally yet, such as $$D^0\rightarrow e\tau $$ D 0 → e τ in the charm sector, and various semileptonic decays such as $$B\rightarrow \rho \mu \tau $$ B → ρ μ τ , $$B_s\rightarrow K \mu \tau $$ B s → K μ τ and $$B_s\rightarrow \phi \mu \tau $$ B s → ϕ μ τ . Lastly, we discuss the validity of the EFT description of LHC data and the impact of loop corrections in our analysis.

Abstract We study the differential decay rate for the rare decay Λ b → Λ 1520 → N K ¯ ℓ + ℓ − $$ {\Lambda}_b\to \Lambda (1520)\left(\to N\overline{K}\right){\ell}^{+}{\ell}^{-} $$ where ℓ is a light lepton and N K ¯ = p K − $$ N\overline{K}=p{K}^{-} $$ , n K ¯ 0 $$ n{\overline{K}}^0 $$ , as this decay mode can provide new and complementary constraints on the Wilson coefficients in b → sℓ + ℓ − transitions compared to other modes. We provide a determination of the complete angular distribution, assuming unpolarised Λ b baryons and neglecting the lepton mass. The resulting angular observables are expressed in terms of helicity amplitudes involving hadronic form factors within the Standard Model and New Physics models with chirality-flipped operators. We study these observables at low and large Λ recoils, using effective theories to determine relations among the hadronic form factors involved. As there is currently no determination of the form factors available from lattice simulations or light-cone sum rules, we perform a first illustration of the sensitivity of some observables to New Physics contributions using hadronic inputs from quark models.

Abstract

Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract

Abstract We discuss the determination of the CKM angle $$\alpha $$ α using the non-leptonic two-body decays $$B\rightarrow \pi \pi $$ B → π π , $$B\rightarrow \rho \rho $$ B → ρ ρ and $$B\rightarrow \rho \pi $$ B → ρ π using the latest data available. We illustrate the methods used in each case and extract the corresponding value of $$\alpha $$ α . Combining all these elements, we obtain the determination $$\alpha _\mathrm{dir}={({86.2}_{-4.0}^{+4.4} \cup {178.4}_{-5.1}^{+3.9})}^{\circ }$$ α dir = ( 86.2 - 4.0 + 4.4 ∪ 178.4 - 5.1 + 3.9 ) ∘ . We assess the uncertainties associated to the breakdown of the isospin hypothesis and the choice of the statistical framework in detail. We also determine the hadronic amplitudes (tree and penguin) describing the QCD dynamics involved in these decays, briefly comparing our results with theoretical expectations. For each observable of interest in the $$B\rightarrow \pi \pi $$ B → π π , $$B\rightarrow \rho \rho $$ B → ρ ρ and $$B\rightarrow \rho \pi $$ B → ρ π systems, we perform an indirect determination based on the constraints from all the other observables available and we discuss the compatibility between indirect and direct determinations. Finally, we review the impact of future improved measurements on the determination of $$\alpha $$ α .

Abstract

We reevaluate the two form factors relevant for the ηπ second-class τ decay mode, making systematic use of analyticity, unitarity, combined with updated inputs to the NLO chiral constraints. We focus in particular on the shape of the ρ resonance peak which is a background-free signature of a second-class current. Its dispersive construction requires the η π → π π scattering amplitude which we derive from a family of Khuri-Treiman equations solutions constrained with accurate recent results on the η → 3 π Dalitz plot.

Nobody doubts that the discovery of hadrons with charm of the hidden and open variety – i.e. charmonium as well as D mesons – was instrumental in the acceptance of the Standard Model (SM) in general, and of quarks as physical degrees of freedom, rather than objects of mere mathematical convenience, in particular. Yet charm is all too often viewed as a quantum number with a great past and with no particularly interesting future. This is due to SM predictions of a rather dull electroweak phenomenology of CKM parameters, a low frequency for [Formula: see text] oscillations, tiny (at best) CP asymmetries, and extremely rare flavor changing neutral currents which, in any case, are swamped by huge backgrounds from long-distance dynamics…

Abstract

We discuss the existence of the light scalar meson K^*_0(800) (also called kappa) in a rigorous way, by showing the presence of a pole in the pi K --> pi K amplitude on the second Riemann sheet. For this purpose, we study the domain of validity of two classes of Roy-Steiner representations in the complex energy plane. We prove that one of them is valid in a region sufficiently broad in the imaginary direction. From this representation, we compute the l=0 partial wave in the complex plane with neither additional approximation nor model dependence, relying only on experimental data. A scalar resonance with strangeness S=1 is found with the following mass and width: E_kappa = 658 \pm 13 MeV and Gamma_kappa = 557 \pm 24 MeV., 16 pages, 8 figures. Domain of validity of a Roy-Steiner representation corrected and enlarged, and features of the K^*_0(800) pole discussed in more details. Conclusions unchanged

Abstract

We study the radiative decay B -> gamma l nu_l in the framework of QCD factorization. We demonstrate explicitly that, in the heavy-quark limit and at one-loop order in perturbation theory, the amplitude does factorize, i.e. that it can be written as a convolution of a perturbatively calculable hard-scattering amplitude with the (non-perturbative) light-cone distribution amplitude of the B-meson. We evaluate the hard-scattering amplitude at one-loop order and verify that the large logarithms are those expected from a study of the b->u transition in the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory. Assuming that this is also the case at higher orders, we resum the large logarithms and perform an exploratory phenomenological analysis. The questions addressed in this study are also relevant for the applications of the QCD factorization formalism to two-body non-leptonic B-decays, in particular to the component of the amplitude arising from hard spectator interactions.

Abstract

The physics objectives of SuperB, an asymmetric electron-positron collider with a luminosity above 10^36/cm^2/s are described, together with the conceptual design of a novel low emittance design that achieves this performance with wallplug power comparable to that of the current B Factories, and an upgraded detector capable of doing the physics in the SuperB environment.

Abstract

We analyse B_{d,s} -> K(*)0 K(*)0 modes within the SM, relating them in a controlled way through SU(3)-flavour symmetry and QCD-improved factorisation. We propose a set of sum rules for such penguin-mediated decays to constrain some CKM angles. We determine B_s -> KK branching ratios and CP-asymmetries as functions of A_{dir}(B_d -> K0 \bar{K}0). Applying the same techniques to B_{d,s}-> K*0 \bar{K}*0, we outline strategies to determine the B_s mixing angle., Proceedings of the EPS-HEP 2007 Conference, Manchester (UK). 3 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

The 331 models constitute an extension of the Standard Model (SM) obtained by enlarging the SM gauge group SU(3)C×SU(2)L×U(1)Y to the group SU(3)C×SU(3)L×U(1)X. We investigate how a nonminimal 331 model may embed lepton flavor universality violating contributions to b→s processes without introducing lepton flavor violation, as suggested by the recent LHCb measurements of the ratios RK and RK∗. We discuss the model-independent scenarios of new physics in b→s currently favored by the data that could be accommodated by this model and consider a few phenomenological constraints on this model. © 2018 authors. Abstract

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised., Comment: v2: 180 pages; many figures. Abstract

Due to its light mass of order Lambda_QCD, the strange quark can play a special role in Chiral Symmetry Breaking (ChSB): differences in the pattern of ChSB in the limits N_f=2 (m_u,m_d->0, m_s physical) and N_f=3 (m_u,m_d,m_s->0) may arise due to vacuum fluctuations of s-bar s pairs, related to the violation of the Zweig rule in the scalar sector and encoded in particular in the O(p^4) low-energy constants L_4 and L_6. In case of large fluctuations, we show that the customary treatment of SU(3)xSU(3) chiral expansions generate instabilities upsetting their convergence. We develop a systematic program to cure these instabilities by resumming nonperturbatively vacuum fluctuations of s-bar s pairs, in order to extract information about ChSB from experimental observations even in the presence of large fluctuations. We advocate a Bayesian framework for treating the uncertainties due to the higher orders. As an application, we present a three-flavour analysis of the low-energy pi-pi scattering and show that the recent experimental data imply a lower bound on the quark mass ratio 2m_s/(m_u+m_d) > 14 at 95 % confidence level. 17. Searching for New Physics with b→sτ^{+}τ^{-} Processes.

Abstract

In recent years, intriguing hints for the violation of lepton flavor universality (LFU) have been accumulated in semileptonic B decays, both in the charged-current transitions b→cℓ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{ℓ} (i.e., R_{D}, R_{D^{*}}, and R_{J/ψ}) and the neutral-current transitions b→sℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} (i.e., R_{K} and R_{K^{*}}). Hints for LFU violation in R_{D^{(*)}} and R_{J/ψ} point at large deviations from the standard model (SM) in processes involving tau leptons. Moreover, LHCb has reported deviations from the SM expectations in b→sμ^{+}μ^{-} processes as well as in the ratios R_{K} and R_{K^{*}}, which together point at new physics (NP) affecting muons with a high significance. These hints for NP suggest the possibility of huge LFU-violating effects in b→sτ^{+}τ^{-} transitions. In this Letter, we predict the branching ratios of B→Kτ^{+}τ^{-}, B→K^{*}τ^{+}τ^{-}, and B_{s}→ϕτ^{+}τ^{-}, taking into account NP effects in the Wilson coefficients C_{9(^{'})}^{ττ} and C_{10(^{'})}^{ττ}. Assuming a common NP explanation of R_{D}, R_{D^{(*)}}, and R_{J/ψ}, we show that a very large enhancement of b→sτ^{+}τ^{-} processes, of around 3 orders of magnitude compared to the SM, can be expected under fairly general assumptions. We find that the branching ratios of B_{s}→τ^{+}τ^{-}, B_{s}→ϕτ^{+}τ^{-}, and B→K^{(*)}τ^{+}τ^{-} under these assumptions are in the observable range for LHCb and Belle II.

18. Exploring Bd,s-->KK decays through flavor symmetries and QCD factorization.

Abstract

We present a new analysis of Bd,s-->KK modes within the standard model (SM), relating them in a controlled way through SU(3)-flavor symmetry and QCD-improved factorization. We propose a set of sum rules for Bd,s-->K0K0 observables. We determine Bs-->KK branching ratios and CP asymmetries as functions of Adir(Bd-->K0K0), pointing out a conflict between BR(Bs-->K+K-) in the SM and data. Finally, we predict the amount of U-spin breaking between Bd-->pi+pi- and Bs-->K+K-.
