The Crab supernova remnant has been observed regularly with the stereoscopic system of 5 imaging air Cherenkov telescopes that was part of the High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) experiment. In total, close to 400 hours of useful data have been collected from 1997 until 2002. The spectrum extends up to energies of 80 TeV and is well matched by model calculations in the framework of inverse Compton scattering of various seed photons in the nebula including for the first time a recently detected compact emission region at mm-wavelengths. The observed indications for a gradual steepening of the energy spectrum in data is expected in the inverse Compton emission model.The average magnetic field in the emitting volume is determined to be $(161.6\pm0.8mathrm{stat}\pm18_\mathrm{sys}) \mu$G. The presence of protons in the nebula is not required to explain the observed flux and upper limits on the injected power of protons are calculated being as low as 20 % of the total spin down luminosity for bulk Lorentz factors of the wind in the range of $10^4-10^6$.The position and size of the emission region have been studied over a wide range of energies. The position is shifted by 13\arcsec to the west of the pulsar with a systematic uncertainty of 25\arcsec. No significant shift in the position with energy is observed. The size of the emission region is constrained to be less than 2\arcmin at energies between 1 and 10 TeV. Above 30 TeV the size is constrained to be less than 3\arcmin.No indications for pulsed emission has been found and upper limits in differential bins of energy have been calculated reaching typically 1-3 % of the unpulsed component., Comment: 53 pages, 12 figures. The array of 5 imaging atmospheric y Cerenkov telescopes (IACTs) deployed at La Palma (Canary Islands), and operated by the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) collaboration, was used for observations of the Monoceros Loop SNR region for a total of about 120 hrs and 20 hrs in ON-source and OFF-source mode, respectively. The giant molecular cloud Rosette Nebula appears in the sky region, close to the south-east part of the SNR rim. Using the HEGRA system of IACTs of rather large field of view (4.3 degree in diameter), we have mapped the extended sky region of 3 ◦ × 3 ◦ associated with the Monoceros SNR/Rosette Nebula, which is centered towards the hard spectrum X-ray point source SAX J0635+533. The EGRET unidentified source of diffuse γ-ray emission (3EG J0634+0521) observed in the energy range between 100 MeV-10 GeV, was effectively in the field of view of our present observations. Also, the GeV source GeV J0633+0645 was within the available field of view. The performance of the IACTs array reveals an energy threshold of 500 GeV and an angular resolution of 0.1 ◦ for γ-rays. In what follows, we present the result of the data analysis and its physical interpretation.

In the first months of 2001 the AGN Mkn 421 showed highly variable, strong TeV activity at flux levels frequently exceeding 1 Crab. Here we present the light curve and energy spectrum of Mkn 421 as measured with the HEGRA stand alone telescope CT1. Around 30% of the data were taken under moonlight conditions. The spectrum shows a significant exponential energy cuto at around 3.4 TeV. The results from the dark night- and the moon data are in excellent agreement with each other. A significant spectral shape variation depending on the flux level has been found. The TeV light curve is also found to be highly correlated with the X-ray light curve of the RXTE/ ASM satellite, showing no significant time lag larger than 0.2 d. The derived correlation coecient of 0.83 corresponds to a 5:2 significance.

TeV γ-rays from the BL Lac object 1ES 1959+650 have been measured during the years 2000 and 2001 with a significance of 5.2 σ at a value of 5.3% of the Crab flux and in May 2002 during strong outbursts with >23 σ at a flux level of up to 2.2 Crab, making 1ES 1959+650 the TeV Blazar with the third best event statistics. The deep observation of 197.4 h has been performed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT system). 1ES 1959+650 is located at a redshift of z = 0.047, providing an intermediate distance between the nearby Blazars Mkn 421 and Mkn 501, and the much more distant object H1426+428. This makes 1ES 1959+650 an important member of the class of TeV Blazars in view of the absorption of TeV photons by the diffuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The differential energy spectrum of 1ES 1959+650 during the flares can be fitted by a power law with a spectral index of 2.83 ± 0.14stat ± 0.08sys or by a power law with an exponential cut-off at (4.2 +0.8 −0.6 stat ± 0.9sys) TeV and a spectral index of 1.83 ± 0.15stat ± 0.08sys. The low state differential energy spectrum obtained with lower statistics can be described by a pure power law with a spectral index of 3.18 ± 0.17stat ± 0.08sys.

For the first time an excess of photons above an energy threshold of 730 GeV from the giant radio galaxy M87 has been measured at a significance level above 4 sigma. The data have been taken during the years 1998 and 1999 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The excess of 107.4 +- 26.8 events above 730 GeV corresponds to an integral flux of 3.3% of the Crab flux or N_gamma(E > 730 GeV) = (0.96 +- 0.23) * 10^(-12) phot.cm^(-2)s^(-1). M87 is located at the center of the Virgo cluster of galaxies at a relatively small redshift of z = 0.00436 and is a promising candidate among the class of giant radio galaxies for the emission of TeV gamma-radiation. The detection of TeV gamma-rays from M87 -- if confirmed -- would establish a new class of extragalactic source in this energy regime since all other AGN detected to date at TeV energies are BL Lac type objects., 5 pages, 3 figures, refereed version, corrected calculation of energy flux

Using data from the HEGRA air shower array, taken in the period from April 1998 to March 2000, upper limits on the ratio Iγ/ICR of the diffuse photon flux Iγ to the hadronic cosmic ray flux ICR are determined for the energy region 20–100 TeV. The analysis uses a gamma–hadron discrimination which is based on differences in the development of photon- and hadron-induced air showers after the shower maximum. A method which is sensitive only to the non-isotropic component of the diffuse photon flux yields an upper limit of Iγ/ICR (at 54 TeV)

A search for potential point sources of very high energy gamma rays has been carried out on the data taken simul- taneously by the HEGRA AIROBICC and Scintillator arrays from August 1994 to March 2000. The list of sought sources includes supernova remnants, pulsars, AGNs and binary systems. The energy threshold is around 15 TeV. For the Crab Nebula, a modest excess of 2.5 standard deviations above the cosmic ray background has been observed. Flux upper limits (at 90% c.l.) of around 1.3 times the flux of the Crab Nebula are obtained, in average, for the candidate sources. A dierent search procedure has been used for an all-sky search which yields absolute flux upper limits between 4 and 9crabs depending on declination, in the band from= 0t o= 60.

The detection of TeV -rays from the blazar H 1426+428 at an integral flux level of (4 2stat 1syst) 10 12 erg cm 2 s 1 above 1 TeV with the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system is reported. H 1426+428 is located at a redshift of z = 0.129, which makes it the most distant source detected in TeV -rays so far. The TeV radiation is expected to be strongly absorbed by the diuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The observed energy spectrum of TeV photons is in good agreement with an intrinsic power law spectrum of the source/ E 1:9 corrected for DEBRA absorption. Statistical errors as well as uncertainties about the intrinsic source spectrum, however, do not permit strong statements about the density of the DEBRA infrared photon eld.

In this paper we present the results of simultaneous observations of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) at X-ray and TeV Gamma-ray energies with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope system of the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) experiment, respectively. The source was monitored from February 2nd to February 16th and from May 3rd to May 8th, 2000. We discuss in detail the temporal and spectral properties of the source. Remarkably, the TeV observations of February 7th/8th showed statistically significant evidence for substantial TeV flux variability on 30 min time scale. We show the results of modeling the data with a time dependent homogeneous Synchrotron Self-Compton (SSC) model. The X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission strengths and energy spectra together with the rapid flux variability strongly suggest that the emission volume is approaching the observer with a Doppler factor of 50 or higher. The different flux variability time scales observed at X-rays and TeV Gamma-rays indicate that a more detailed analysis will require inhomogeneous models with several emission zones.

For distant extragalactic sources of gamma-rays in the PeV (10 15 eV) energy range, interactions of the gamma rays with intergalactic diuse radiation elds will initiate a pair cascade. Depending on the magnetic elds in the vicinity of the source, the cascade can either result in an isotropic halo around an initially beamed source, or remain more or less collimated. Data recorded by the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are used to derive limits on the halo flux from the AGN Mrk 501. This is achieved by comparing the angular distribution of TeV gamma-rays during the 1997 burst phase { where direct photons should dominate { with the distribution during the 1998/99 quiescent state, where a steady-state halo contribution should be most pronounced. The results depend on the assumptions concerning the angular distribution of the halo; limits on the halo flux within 0:5 to 1 from the source range between 0.1% and 1% of the peak burst flux.

During 1997, the BL Lac object Mkn 501 went into an extraordinary state of high X-ray and TeV gamma-ray activity, lasting more than 6 months. In this paper we report on the TeV emission characteristics of the source in the subsequent years of 1998 and 1999 as measured with the Stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope System of HEGRA (La Palma, Canary Islands). Our observations reveal a 1998-1999 mean emission level at 1 TeV of 1/3 of the flux of the Crab Nebula, a factor of 10 lower than during the year of 1997. A dataset of 122 observations hours with the HEGRA telescope system makes it possible to assess for the first time the Mkn 501 TeV energy spectrum for a mean flux level substantially below that of the Crab Nebula with reasonable statistical accuracy. Excluding the data of a strong flare, we find evidence that the 1998--1999 low-flux spectrum is substantially softer (by 0.44+-0.1(stat) in spectral index) than the 1997 time averaged spectrum. The 500 GeV to 10 TeV energy spectrum can well be described by a power law model with exponential cutoff: dN/dE ~ E^(-alpha) exp(-E/E0) with alpha=2.31+-0.22(stat), and E0=5.1 (-2.3+7.8)(stat) TeV. Within statistical accuracy, also a pure power law model gives an acceptable fit to the data: dN/dE ~ E^(-Gamma) with Gamma=2.76+-0.08(stat). The unidentified TeV source in Cygnus is now confirmed by follow-up observations from 2002 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of Cherenkov Telescopes. Using all data (1999 to 2002) we confirm this new source as steady in flux over the four years of data taking, extended with radius 6.2 arcmin (+-1.2 arcmin (stat) +-0.9 arcmin (sys)) and exhibiting a hard spectrum with photon index -1.9. It is located in the direction of the dense OB stellar association, Cygnus OB2. Its integral flux above energies E>1 TeV amounts to \~5% of the Crab assuming a Gaussian profile for the intrinsic source morphology. There is no obvious counterpart at radio, optical nor X-ray energies, leaving TeVJ2032+4130 presently unidentified. Observational parameters of this source are updated here and some astrophysical discussion is provided. Also included are upper limits for a number of other interesting sources in the FoV, including the famous microquasar Cygnus X-3., 7 pages, 3 figures. A sample of 54 selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been observed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of Cherenkov Telescopes between 1996 and 2002 in the TeV energy regime. The observations were motivated by the positive results obtained for Mkn 421 and Mkn 501. The distances of the selected objects vary over a large range of redshifts between z = 0.004 and z = 0.7. Among the observed AGN are the meanwhile established TeV-emitting BL Lac type objects H1426+428 and 1ES1959+650. Furthermore the BL Lac object 1ES2344+514 and the radio galaxy M87 show evidence for a signal on a 4 sigma level. The observation of 1ES2344+514 together with the Whipple results firmly establishes this AGN as a TeV source. Several objects (PKS2155-304, BL Lacertae, 3C066A) that have been claimed as TeV gamma-ray emitters by other groups are included in this data sample but could not be confirmed using data analysed here. Between early 1997 and late 2002, the HEGRA collaboration operated a stereoscopic system of 4 (later 5) imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. In this paper we present the calibration schemes which were developed for the system, and report on the performance of the detector over the years. In general, the telescope system was very well understood, regarding both the absolute calibration and the slight changes in performance over the years. The system had an energy threshold of 500 GeV for observations at zenith and under optimum detector conditions. With the corresponding calibration schemes, a systematic accuracy of 15 percent on the absolute energy scale has been achieved. The continuous sensitivity monitoring provided a relative accuracy of a few percent, and showed that the threshold did not exceed 600 GeV throughout the entire operation time. The readout electronics and the imaging quality of the dishes were well monitored and stable. The absolute pointing had an accuracy of at least 25 arcsec; this number was guaranteed throughout the whole lifetime of the experiment., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. Using the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, one quarter of the Galactic plane (-2 deg < l < 85 deg) was surveyed for TeV gamma-ray emission from point sources and moderately extended sources (diameter, 10 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Data taken with the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes during the 1997 flares of Mkn 501 are reanalyzed using an algorithm providing improved energy resolution. A resolution of 10% to 12% is obtained by accounting for the variation of the Cherenkov light yield with the height of the shower maximum in the atmosphere. The improved energy resolution is particularly relevant for the study of the high-energy cutoff in the spectrum, which might be caused by interactions with the intergalactic infrared background radiation. The reanalysis presented here confirms the results obtained in the previous analysis, but hints a steeper slope of the spectrum in the region around 20 TeV., 6 Pages, 4 figures; A&A, in press

The energy spectrum of the Blazar type galaxy Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) as measured by the High-Energy-Gamma-Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) air Cerenkov telescopes extends beyond 16 TeV and constitutes the most energetic photons observed from an extragalactic object. A fraction of the emitted spectrum is possibly absorbed in interactions with low energy photons of the diffuse extragalactic infrared radiation, which in turn offers the unique possibility to measure the diffuse infrared radiation density by TeV spectroscopy. The upper limit on the density of the extragalactic infrared radiation derived from the TeV observations imposes constraints on models of galaxy formation and stellar evolution. One of the recently published ideas to overcome severe absorption of TeV photons is based upon the assumption that sources like Mrk 501 could produce Bose-Einstein condensates of coherent photons. The condensates would have a higher survival probability during the transport in the diffuse radiation field and could mimic TeV air shower events. The powerful stereoscopic technique of the HEGRA air Cerenkov telescopes allows to test this hypothesis by reconstructing the penetration depths of TeV air shower events: Air showers initiated by Bose-Einstein condensates are expected to reach the maximum of the shower development in the atmosphere earlier than single photon events. By comparing the energy-dependent penetration depths of TeV photons from Mrk 501 with those from the TeV standard-candle Crab Nebula and simulated air shower events, we can reject the hypothesis that TeV photons from Mrk 501 are pure Bose-Einstein condensates., 9 pages, 2 figures, published by ApJ Letters, revised version (simulation results added)

The Crab Nebula has been observed by the HEGRA (High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy) stereoscopic system of imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) for a total of about 200 hrs during two observational campaigns: from September 1997 to March 1998 and from August 1998 to April 1999. The recent detailed studies of system performance give an energy threshold and an energy resolution for gamma-rays of 500 GeV and ~ 18%, respectively. The Crab energy spectrum was measured with the HEGRA IACT system in a very broad energy range up to 20 TeV, using observations at zenith angles up to 65 degrees. The Crab data can be fitted in the energy range from 1 to 20 TeV by a simple power-law, which yields dJg/dE = (2.79+/-0.02 +/- 0.5) 10^{-7} E^{-2.59 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.05}, ph m^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1} The Crab Nebula energy spectrum, as measured with the HEGRA IACT system, agrees within 15% in the absolute scale and within 0.1 units in the power law index with the latest measurements by the Whipple, CANGAROO and CAT groups, consistent within the statistical and systematic errors quoted by the experiments. The pure power-law spectrum of TeV gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula constrains the physics parameters of the nebula environment as well as the models of photon emission., to appear in ApJ, 29 pages, 6 figures

The HEGRA system of 4 Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) has been used to determine the flux and the spectrum of cosmic ray protons over a limited energy range around 1.5 TeV. Although the IACT system is designed for the detection of gamma-rays with energies above 500 GeV, it has also a large detection area of $ \simeq 10^6 m^2 \cdot 3 msr$ for primary protons of energies above 1 TeV and the capability to reconstruct the primary proton energy with a reasonable accuracy $\Delta$E/E of 50% near this threshold. Furthermore, the principle of stereoscopic detection of air showers permits the effective suppression of air showers induced by heavier primaries already on the trigger level, and in addition on the software level by analysis of the stereoscopic images. The combination of both capabilities permits a determination of the proton spectrum almost independently of the cosmic ray chemical composition. The accuracy of our estimate of the spectral index at 1.5 TeV is limited by systematic uncertainties and is comparable to the accuracy achieved with recent balloon and space borne experiments. In this paper we describe in detail the analysis tools, namely the detailed Monte Carlo simulation, the analysis procedure and the results. We determine the local (i.e. in the range of 1.5 to 3 TeV) differential spectral index to be $\gamma_p = 2.72\pm 0.02_{stat.}{\pm 0.15}_{syst.}$ and obtain an integral flux above 1.5 TeV of $F(> 1.5 TeV) =3.1\pm 0.6_{stat.}\pm 1.2_{syst.} 10^{-2}/s sr m^2$., Comment: 39 pages, 13 figures, 10 tables, prepared with REVtex. accepted by Physical Review D, in press

Data of the wide angle atmospheric Cherenkov light detector array AIROBICC and the scintillator matrix of the HEGRA air shower detector complex are combined to determine the energy spectrum and coarse composition of charged cosmic rays in the energy interval from 300 TeV to 10 PeV.

TeV Gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula and Mkn 501 were detected with the HEGRA CT1 imaging Cerenkov telescope during periods when the moon was shining and during twilight. This was accomplished by lowering the high voltage supply of the photomutipliers in fixed steps up to 13%. No other adjustments were made and no filters were used. Laser runs could not establish any non-linearity in the gain of the individual pixels, and the trigger rate was uniform over the whole camera. The energy threshol was increased by up to a factor of two, depending on the amount of HV reduction. In a series of observations lasting 11.7 hours, a signal with a 3.4 sigma significance was detected from the Crab. During the 1997 multiple flare episode of Mkn 501 a 26 sigma combined excess has been recorded during 134 hours of observations under various moonshine/twilight conditions. The results show that this technique can easily be adapted to increase the exposure of a source, which is important for sources showing rapid time variability such as AGNs or GRBs. Observations can be made up to ~20 deg. angular separation from the moon and until the moon is 85% illuminated (ten to eleven days before and after new moon), as well as during 20 to 40 minutes during twilight, before the commencement of astronomical darkness., 16 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics
