1. MAXI J1848-015: The First Detection of Relativistically Moving Outflows from a Globular Cluster X-Ray Binary

Abstract

Over the past decade, observations of relativistic outflows from outbursting X-ray binaries in the Galactic field have grown significantly. In this work, we present the first detection of moving and decelerating radio-emitting outflows from an X-ray binary in a globular cluster. MAXI J1848−015 is a recently discovered transient X-ray binary in the direction of the globular cluster GLIMPSE-C01. Using observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and a monitoring campaign with the MeerKAT observatory for 500 days, we model the motion of the outflows. This represents some of the most intensive, long-term coverage of relativistically moving X-ray binary outflows to date. We use the proper motions of the outflows from MAXI J1848−015 to constrain the component of the intrinsic jet speed along the line of sight, ${\beta }_{\mathrm{int}}\cos {\theta }_{\mathrm{ejection}}$ , to be =0.19 ± 0.02. Assuming it is located in GLIMPSE-C01, at 3.4 kpc, we determine the intrinsic jet speed, β _int = 0.79 ± 0.07, and the inclination angle to the line of sight, θ _ejection = 76° ± 2°. This makes the outflows from MAXI J1848−015 somewhat slower than those seen from many other known X-ray binaries. We also constrain the maximum distance to MAXI J1848−015 to be 4.3 kpc. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the nature of the compact object in this system, finding that a black hole primary is a viable (but as-of-yet unconfirmed) explanation for the observed properties of MAXI J1848−015. If future data and/or analysis provide more conclusive evidence that MAXI J1848−015 indeed hosts a black hole, it would be the first black hole X-ray binary in outburst identified in a Galactic globular cluster.

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to define a structured and functionalized support for future biomedical applications (model of “low-density bioarray”). The experiments were carried out by using stereolithography process with a special SU-8 photoresist and the reproducibility of the method was studied by analyzing the surface profile of the support. Finally, a matrix of regular controlled sized wells was fabricated. Chemical reactions leading to covalent grafting were run to demonstrate that the inner surface of the wells remains still reactive after polymerization. The grafting of fluorophores with carboxylic functions activated by N-hydroxysuccinimide was studied as function of time, in order to determine the best reactions, conditions. Then, the grafting of two distinct fluorescent probes was led simultaneously inside the wells, showing the possibility of spatial localization of diverse reactions on the same support. The covalent and localized bindings were confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy analyses.

Abstract

We present results from radio and X-ray observations of the X-ray transient MAXI J1810-222. The nature of the accretor in this source has not been identified. In this paper, we show results from a quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring campaign taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory X-ray telescope (XRT), and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). We also analyse the X-ray temporal behaviour using observations from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Results show a seemingly peculiar X-ray spectral evolution of MAXI J1810-222 during this outburst, where the source was initially only detected in the soft X-ray band for the early part of the outburst. Then, ~200 days after MAXI J1810-222 was first detected the hard X-ray emission increased and the source transitioned to a long-lived (~1.5 years) bright, harder X-ray state. After this hard state, MAXI J1810-222 returned back to a softer state, before fading and transitioning again to a harder state and then appearing to follow a more typical outburst decay. From the X-ray spectral and timing properties, and the source's radio behaviour, we argue that the results from this study are most consistent with MAXI J1810-222 being a relatively distant ($\gtrsim$6 kpc) black hole X-ray binary. A sufficiently large distance to source can simply explain the seemingly odd outburst evolution that was observed, where only the brightest portion of the outburst was detectable by the all-sky X-ray telescopes., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Tracking the motions of transient jets launched by low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is critical for determining the moment of jet ejection, and identifying any corresponding signatures in the accretion flow. However, these jets are often highly variable and can travel across the resolution element of an image within a single observation, violating a fundamental assumption of aperture synthesis. We present a novel approach in which we directly fit a single time-dependent model to the full set of interferometer visibilities, where we explicitly parameterise the motion and flux density variability of the emission components, to minimise the number of free parameters in the fit, while leveraging information from the full observation. This technique allows us to detect and characterize faint, fast-moving sources, for which the standard time binning technique is inadequate. We validate our technique with synthetic observations, before applying it to three Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the black hole candidate LMXB MAXI J1803-298 during its 2021 outburst. We measured the proper motion of a discrete jet component to be $1.37\pm0.14$ mas/hr, and thus we infer an ejection date of MJD $59348.08_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$, which occurs just after the peak of a radio flare observed by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA), while MAXI J1803-298 was in the intermediate state. Further development of these new VLBI analysis techniques will lead to more precise measurements of jet ejection dates, which, combined with dense, simultaneous multi-wavelength monitoring, will allow for clearer identification of jet ejection signatures in the accretion flow., 15 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Black hole low mass X-ray binaries (BH LMXBs) can launch powerful outflows in the form of discrete ejecta. Observing the entire trajectory of these ejecta allows us to model their motion with great accuracy, and this is essential for measuring their physical properties. In particular, observing the final deceleration phase, often poorly sampled, is fundamental to obtain a reliable estimate of the jet's energy. During its 2019/2020 outburst, the BH LMXB MAXI J1348$-$630 launched a single-sided radio-emitting jet that was detected at large scales after a strong deceleration due to the interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM). We successfully modelled the jet motion with a dynamical external shock model, which allowed us to constrain the jet initial Lorentz factor $\Gamma_0 = 1.85^{+0.15}_{-0.12}$, inclination angle $\theta = 29.3_{-3.2}^{+2.7}$ deg and ejection date $t_{\rm ej} = 21.5_{-3.0}^{+1.8}$ (MJD $-$ $58500$). Under simple assumptions on the jet opening angle and on the external ISM density, we find that the jet has a large initial kinetic energy $E_0 = 4.6^{+20.0}_{-3.4} \times 10^{46}$ erg, far greater than what commonly measured for LMXBs from the jet's synchrotron emission. This implies that discrete ejecta radiate away only a small fraction of their total energy, which is instead transferred to the environment. The jet power estimate is larger than the simultaneous available accretion power, and we present several options to mitigate this discrepancy. We infer that MAXI J1348$-$630 is likely embedded in an ISM cavity with internal density $n = 0.0010^{+0.0005}_{-0.0003}$ cm$^{-3}$ and radius $R_{\rm c} = 0.61^{+0.11}_{-0.09}$ pc, which could have been produced by the system's previous activity, as proposed for other BH LMXBs., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

The properties of the disk/jet coupling in quiescent black hole low mass X-ray binaries (BH LMXBs) are still largely unknown. In this paper we present the first quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray detection in quiescence of the BH LMXB MAXI J1348$-$630, which is known to display a hybrid disk/jet connection that depends on the accretion rate. We performed deep X-ray and radio observations using the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. MAXI J1348$-$630 is detected for the first time in quiescence at an X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X} = (7.5 \pm 2.9) \times 10^{30} (D/2.2 \ {\rm kpc})^2$ erg s$^{-1}$: one of the lowest X-ray luminosities observed for a quiescent BH LMXB, possibly implying a short orbital period for the system. MAXI J1348$-$630 is also detected in radio at $L_{\rm R} = (4.3 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{26} (D/2.2 \ {\rm kpc})^2$ erg s$^{-1}$. These detections allow us to constrain the location of MAXI J1348$-$630 on the radio/X-ray diagram in quiescence, finding that the source belongs to the standard (radio-loud) track in this phase. This provides a strong confirmation that hybrid-correlation sources follow the standard track at low luminosities and down to quiescence, thus improving our knowledge of the disk/jet connection in BH LMXBs., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We present HI absorption spectra of the black hole candidate X-ray binary (XRB) MAXI J1348-630 using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and MeerKAT. The ASKAP HI spectrum shows a maximum negative radial velocity (with respect to the local standard of rest) of $-31\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$ for MAXI J1348-630, as compared to $-50\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$ for a stacked spectrum of several nearby extragalactic sources. This implies a most probable distance of $2.2^{+0.5}_{-0.6}$ kpc for MAXI J1348-630, and a strong upper limit of the tangent point distance at $5.3\pm0.1$ kpc. Our preferred distance implies that MAXI J1348-630 reached $17\pm10$ % of the Eddington luminosity at the peak of its outburst, and that the source transited from the soft to the hard X-ray spectral state at $2.5\pm1.5$ % of the Eddington luminosity. The MeerKAT HI spectrum of MAXI J1348-630 (obtained from the older, low-resolution 4k mode) is consistent with the re-binned ASKAP spectrum, highlighting the potential of the eventual capabilities of MeerKAT for XRB spectral line studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Abstract

PSR B0950+08 is a bright non-recycled pulsar whose single-pulse fluence variability is reportedly large. Based on observations at two widely separated frequencies, 55 MHz (NenuFAR) and 1.4 GHz (Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope), we review the properties of these single pulses. We conclude that they are more similar to ordinary pulses of radio emission than to a special kind of short and bright Giant Pulses, observed from only a handful of pulsars. We argue that temporal variation of properties of interstellar medium along the line of sight to this nearby pulsar, namely the fluctuating size of decorrelation bandwidth of diffractive scintillation makes important contribution to observed single-pulse fluence variability. We further present interesting structures in the low-frequency single-pulse spectra that resemble the "sad trombones" seen in Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs); although for PSR B0950+08 the upward frequency drift is also routinely present. We explain these spectral features with radius-to-frequency mapping, similar to the model developed by Wang et al. (2019) for FRBs. Finally, we speculate that microsecond-scale fluence variability of the general pulsar population remains poorly known, and that its further study may bring important clues about the nature of FRBs., Accepted by A&A. Abstract

The spectral evolution of transient X-ray binaries can be reproduced by an interplay between two flows separated at a radius $R_J$: a standard accretion disk (SAD) in the outer parts and a jet-emitting disk (JED) in the inner parts. In the previous papers of this series, we recover the spectral evolution in both X-rays and radio for four outbursts of GX339-4 by playing independently with the two parameters: $R_J$ and the accretion rate $\dot{M}_{in}$. In this paper, we compare the time evolution of $R_J$ and $\dot{M}_{in}$ for the four outbursts. We show that despite the undeniable differences between the time evolution of each outburst, a unique pattern in the $\dot{M}_{in}-R_J$ plane seems to be followed by all cycles within the JED-SAD model. We call this pattern a fingerprint, and show that even the 'failed' outburst considered follows it. We also compute the radiative efficiency in X-rays during the cycles and consider its impact on the radio--X-ray correlation. Within the JED-SAD paradigm, we find that the accretion flow is always radiatively efficient in the hard states, with between $15\%$ and $40\%$ of the accretion power being radiated away at any given time. Moreover, we show that the radiative efficiency evolves with the accretion rate because of key changes in the JED thermal structure. These changes give birth to two different regimes with different radiative efficiencies: the thick disk and the slim disk. While the existence of these two regimes is intrinsically linked to the JED-SAD model, we show direct observational evidence of the presence of two different regimes using the evolution of the X-ray power-law spectral index, a model-independent estimate. We then argue that these two regimes could be the origin of the gap in X-ray luminosity in the hard state, the wiggles and different slopes seen in the radio--X-ray correlation, and even the existence of outliers., replaced after language editing

J., What determines the nuclear radio emission in local galaxies? To address this question, we combine optical [O iii] line emission, robust black hole (BH) mass estimates, and high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5-GHz data, from the LeMMINGs survey, of a statistically complete sample of 280 nearby optically active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive [H ii and absorption line galaxies (ALGs)] galaxies. Using [O iii] luminosity (L[O III]) as a proxy for the accretion power, local galaxies follow distinct sequences in the optical-radio planes of BH activity, which suggest different origins of the nuclear radio emission for the optical classes. The 1.5-GHz radio luminosity of their parsec-scale cores (Lcore) is found to scale with BH mass (MBH) and [O iii] luminosity. Below MBH ∼106.5 M⊙, stellar processes from non-jetted H ii galaxies dominate with Lcore ∝ MBH0.61 ± 0.33 and Lcore ∝ L[O III]0.79 ± 0.30. Above MBH ∼106.5 M⊙, accretion-driven processes dominate with Lcore ∝ MBH1.5-1.65 and Lcore ∝ L[O III]0.99-1.31 for active galaxies: radio-quiet/loud LINERs, Seyferts, and jetted H ii galaxies always display (although low) signatures of radio-emitting BH activity, with L1.5 GHz ≳ 1019.8 W Hz-1 and MBH ≳ 107 M⊙, on a broad range of Eddington-scaled accretion rates (m). Radio-quiet and radio-loud LINERs are powered by low-m discs launching sub-relativistic and relativistic jets, respectively. Low-power slow jets and disc/corona winds from moderately high to high-m discs account for the compact and edge-brightened jets of Seyferts, respectively. Jetted H ii galaxies may host weakly active BHs. Fuel-starved BHs and recurrent activity account for ALG properties. Abstract

Radio emission from astrophysical transients allows us to derive calorimetry of kinetic feedback and detailed imaging in ways that are not possible at other wavelengths, and as such it forms an important part of the multi-messenger follow-ups of these events. The field is burgeoning, with a renaissance of interest in accretion, stellar explosions and jetted supernovæ, alongside newer classes of phenomena such as fast radio bursts and tidal disruption events. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss the infrastructure and techniques for detecting, identifying and probing radio transients, with a particular focus on how best to exploit transient alerts from multi-messenger facilities. We examined the type of transient alerts those facilities will broadcast, and methods for following them up, such as rapid-response triggering and shadowing. In break-out groups, participants chose a science question related to a particular radio transient type or class and discussed whether the planned transient strategies and observing techniques on the Square Kilometre Array will be adequate to address the particular question. The classes they chose included fast radio bursts, supernovæ, cataclysmic variable and unknown transients. Any proposed adaptation or suggestion was relayed to a panel of experts for further discussion. The second part of the workshop concentrated on the application of long baseline interferometry for detecting and measuring radio transients.

Resume Introduction Afin de pallier le manque de temps medical et les difficultes rencontrees par le service d’hospitalisation de semaine de cardiologie dans l’elaboration des bilans medicamenteux (BM) d’entree, un binome infirmiere diplomee d’etat (IDE)/pharmacien dedie a une activite de conciliation medicamenteuse (CM) a ete mis en place. Lors de l’accueil du patient, l’IDE etablit son BM avant qu’il soit valide par le pharmacien pour mise a disposition comme support de prescription. Objectif Cette etude a pour but d’evaluer l’interet et l’impact de cette activite de CM securisant la prise en charge medicamenteuse des patients. Materiel et methode Un bilan d’activite a un an a ete effectue. Nous avons egalement compare la Duree Moyenne de Sejour (DMS) ainsi que le nombre d’hospitalisations de jour (HDJ) avant et apres mise en place de l’activite. Enfin, les resultats d’une enquete de satisfaction diffusee aupres des 6 medecins et 15 IDE du service ont ete analyses. Resultats En un an, 2120 BM ont ete realises soit 86 % de patients concilies, 77 % d’entre eux ont ete utilises par les medecins. En moyenne, 3,5 sources d’informations sont utilisees par BM avec toujours un entretien patient. Le taux d’HDJ est passe de 11,2 % a 16,1 % (p Discussion/Conclusion Le deploiement de la CM a securise la prise en charge medicamenteuse des patients tout en apportant un reel gain de temps medical. Cette activite a permis de diminuer la DMS au profit des sejours d’HDJ grâce a la mise a disposition de BM fiables reduisant les delais de prescription. Ces BM servent egalement de support aux medecins pour la realisation d’ordonnances de sortie exhaustives. Cette organisation reposant sur une coordination pluri-professionnelle a augmente l’efficience de la prise en charge des patients.

Abstract

[Abridged] We report on deep, coordinated radio and X-ray observations of the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 in quiescence. The source was observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array for a total of 17.5 hrs at 5.3 GHz, yielding a 4.8 \pm 1.4 microJy radio source at a position consistent with the binary system. At a distance of 1.7 kpc, this corresponds to an integrated radio luminosity between 4-8E+25 erg/s, depending on the spectral index. This is the lowest radio luminosity measured for any accreting black hole to date. Simultaneous observations with the Chandra X-ray Telescope detected XTE J1118+480 at 1.2E-14 erg/s/cm^2 (1-10 keV), corresponding to an Eddington ratio of ~4E-9 for a 7.5 solar mass black hole. Combining these new measurements with data from the 2005 and 2000 outbursts available in the literature, we find evidence for a relationship of the form ellr=alpha+beta*ellx (where ell denotes logarithmic luminosities), with beta=0.72\pm0.09. XTE J1118+480 is thus the third system, together with GX339-4 and V404 Cyg, for which a tight, non-linear radio/X-ray correlation has been reported over more than 5 dex in ellx. We then perform a clustering and linear regression analysis on what is arguably the most up-to-date collection of coordinated radio and X-ray luminosity measurements from quiescent and hard state black hole X-ray binaries, including 24 systems. Abstract

Context. The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) radio telescope is a giant digital phased array interferometer with multiple antennas distributed in Europe. It provides discrete sets of Fourier components of the sky brightness. Recovering the original brightness distribution with aperture synthesis forms an inverse problem that can be solved by various deconvolution and minimization methods Aims. Recent papers have established a clear link between the discrete nature of radio interferometry measurement and the "compressed sensing" (CS) theory, which supports sparse reconstruction methods to form an image from the measured visibilities. Empowered by proximal theory, CS offers a sound framework for efficient global minimization and sparse data representation using fast algorithms. Combined with instrumental direction-dependent effects (DDE) in the scope of a real instrument, we developed and validated a new method based on this framework Methods. We implemented a sparse reconstruction method in the standard LOFAR imaging tool and compared the photometric and resolution performance of this new imager with that of CLEAN-based methods (CLEAN and MS-CLEAN) with simulated and real LOFAR data Results. We show that i) sparse reconstruction performs as well as CLEAN in recovering the flux of point sources; ii) performs much better on extended objects (the root mean square error is reduced by a factor of up to 10); and iii) provides a solution with an effective angular resolution 2-3 times better than the CLEAN images. Conclusions. Sparse recovery gives a correct photometry on high dynamic and wide-field images and improved realistic structures of extended sources (of simulated and real LOFAR datasets). Abstract

International audience; The history of rifting and breakup of eastern Gondwana is recorded by the development and fill of the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Knowledge of the structural architecture and stratigraphic geometry of the Perth Basin is essential to understand the evolution of the Western Australian margin and its applications to hydrocarbon and geothermal prospects, and effective aquifer management. This study integrates existing, publicly available geological, gravity, magnetic and digital elevation data to develop the first refined, regional structural and stratigraphic interpretation of the entire onshore and offshore Perth Basin, Western Australia. This new 3D model offers formation depth and thickness predictions in areas of sparse or no data. The model shows significant heterogeneity in the preserved formation thicknesses and depths at both local and regional scales. These differences may have resulted from differential subsidence and/or differential exhumation, but the formation geometries alone cannot distinguish between these two models if any erosion has occurred. Only the Lower to Middle Jurassic stratigraphy has been minimally eroded and thereby records the net subsidence. This stratigraphic interval shows that subsidence was broadly hinged from south to north, with a greater subsidence rate in the southern and central Perth Basin. Localised differences in thicknesses across adjacent sub-basins were likely controlled by differential displacement along sub-basin bounding faults during subsidence and, subsequently, during exhumation episodes. This new 3D model of the entire Perth Basin provides a framework for numerical simulations of fluid and heat flow and large-scale tectonic analysis, such as stratigraphic forward modelling of the southwestern Australian margin.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Carbapenems are one of the last-report therapeutic choices to treat infections due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) micro-organisms. For this reason, the spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae represents a serious health-public problem. Here we describe isolates co-producing blaNDM-5 and blaOXA-1. Methods: Three Escherichia coli isolates obtained from patients with invasive infections were analysed by phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Results: All of the isolates were resistant to carbapenems, most β-lactam antibiotics, piperacillin/tazobactam, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and ciprofloxacin, remaining susceptible to amikacin, fosfomycin, colistin and tigecycline. The isolates belonged to sequence types ST44, ST405 and ST167 and co-harboured the blaNDM-5 and blaOXA-1 genes. Two of the isolates also harboured extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes (blaCTX-M-15 and blaTEM-1b). The blaNDM-5 gene was probably carried chromosomally even if different plasmids were identified. Various virulence genes were also identified. Conclusion: Our results highlight that continuous surveillance is essential to monitor the spread of clinically important MDR pathogens.

Abstract

We have detected, at x-ray and radio wavelengths, large-scale moving jets from the microquasar XTE J1550–564. Plasma ejected from near the black hole traveled at relativistic velocities for at least 4 years. We present direct evidence for gradual deceleration in a relativistic jet. The broadband spectrum of the jets is consistent with synchrotron emission from high-energy (up to 10 tera–electron volts) particles that were accelerated in the shock waves formed within the relativistic ejecta or by the interaction of the jets with the interstellar medium. XTE J1550–564 offers a rare opportunity to study the dynamical evolution of relativistic jets on time scales inaccessible for active galactic nuclei jets, with implications for our understanding of relativistic jets from Galactic x-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei.

Abstract

SS 433 is a bright X-ray binary with two sided jets moving at 0.26 c. It is located at the center of the supernova remnant W50, suggesting that SS 433 is associated with W50. A large molecular cloud also surrounds the SS 433/W50 system. Recent observations with ROSAT and ASCA have shown X-ray hot spots interpreted as SS 433 jets interacting with the ambient interstellar medium. To verify this hypothesis, we have performed observations of the molecular cloud around SS 433 in the J=1−0 and J=2−1 lines of CO transitions along and perpendicular to the jet axis and have found two clouds with velocities of 32 km/s and 50 km/s respectively. Due to a strong correlation between the 50 km/s map and the X-ray hot spots, we conclude that SS 433 is inside or at the edge of the 50 km/s molecular cloud.

Abstract

A possible new soft Gamma-Ray Repeater, SGR 1814-13, was first detected on 1997 June 29, with a subsequent possible detection on 1997 September 12. We observed this region on 1997 October 28 and 29, with the MOPRA millimeter radio telescope, in the transition CO(1-0) at 115 GHz, and found a molecular cloud in the direction of this source. Assuming that this cloud is associated with SGR 1814-13, we have derived, from the Galactic rotation curve, kinematic distances of 1.3 kpc and 15 kpc to the source. From the CO (1-0) spectrum, we estimate a hydrogen column density of N(H2) = 5 × 1021 cm−2, and a visual absorption of Av = 5.7 mag. We present arguments for the source to be located at 15 kpc.

Abstract

A procedure for the simulation of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images is presented. It combines a density-functional theory (DFT) determination of the electronic wave functions and a scattering formalism for the tunneling current calculation. The atomic structures of the sample and the tip are fully described. The coupling of the surface and the tip apex with their respective bulk reservoirs together with the tip-surface interactions are completely taken into account. The whole system being infinite, the DFT calculations were performed on fragments of the system. From the calculated Hamiltonian and overlap matrix elements, the tunnel current was evaluated with a Green's-function technique. We applied this method both to the Cu(001) surface probed by a Cu tip (contaminated or not) and to a $\mathrm{Cu}(001)+p(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{S}$ surface probed by a Cu tip. The calculated current as a function of the tip-surface distance, with a decay of one decade per \AA{}, and the corrugations in the zero-bias limit are in good agreement with experimental data. The analysis of the atomic orbital contributions to the tunnel current can provide insights into the STM contrast mechanism, as shown with selected examples.

27. Multiwavelength Observation of a New Black Hole Candidate: EXS 1737.9−2952

Abstract

We report a multiwavelength analysis of an unusual high-energy transient: EXS 1737.9-2952. Due to the features this source exhibited in the hard X-ray domain similar to another source in the Galactic center region (1E1740.9 - 2952), and in order to study the molecular gas toward this X-ray source, we performed an observation of the EXS region in 1993 August, using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) located in La Silla (Chilean Andes). We observed a cloud, at the "forbidden" velocity of 135 km s-1, using 12CO (1-0) transitions, giving a maximum column density of 8 × 1021 cm-2. In 1994 we conducted other observations to search for higher density regions inside the cloud, using HCO+ and CS lines, but they were unsuccessful: we concluded that the cloud could be associated with the X-ray source and its mean density is of the order of ≈ 103 cm-3. In 1994 April, we performed a set of observations of the field containing EXS, at 20 cm and 6 cm, using the VLA in its A configuration, and found four possible radio candidates for an association with the EXS X-ray source, one of them (source 3) being extended, exhibiting a head-tail morphology, and a having a thermal spectrum with a spectral index ≈ -0.7. We reproduced our observation in 1994 November and December, using the C configuration at 6 cm, in order to investigate on possible variability and extension of these sources and found a marginal indication in the 20 cm image that source 3 may have a weak second component displaced about 15''. Nevertheless, this indication is too faint to associate this source definitely with EXS since no significant variation was detected. In addition, during the 1994 November-December observation, two more extended sources were detected but their association with EXS is unlikely. We also analyzed the Einstein/IPC image of the 5 σ EXS error box which does not exhibit, at the time of the observation, any significant low-energy X-ray counterpart to EXS. A nearby pulsar PSR 1737-30 in the ROSAT catalog is outside this error box. Finally, IRAS maps of the EXS region do not show any IR contribution at the location of the radio sources. We conclude that (1) EXS 1737.9-2952 is a high-energy transient, (2) a persistent counterpart at other wavelengths is not demonstrated, and (3) EXS, when flaring, as well as other GC gamma-ray sources, could possibly contribute to the 511 keV bulge emission.

Abstract

We present CO(1-0) observations toward the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1806-20. We discuss the implications on the distance to the X-ray counterpart: AX 1805.7-2025. We also present an upper limit at λ = 1.3 mm for the thermal emission from dust and high resolution IRAS maps of the region. SGR 1806-20 is very likely associated with the H II complex W31. The G10.0-0.3 supernova remnant (SNR) could be expanding in the very low density region produced by the wind of the bright O9-B2 star recently detected.

31. Microsurgical endodontic treatment of the upper molar teeth and their relationship with the maxillary sinus: a retrospective multicentric clinical study

Abstract

Abstract Purpose To assess the clinical and radiographic success rate of microsurgical endodontic treatment of upper molar teeth in relationship with the maxillary sinus, with 12 months follow-up. Methods Patients treated with microsurgical endodontic treatment of upper molar teeth in the period between 2017 and 2019 were recruited from two dental clinics according to specific selection criteria. The outcomes were determined based on clinical and radiographic results taken three, six and 12 months post-operatively, compared with those taken immediately before and after surgery. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were recorded. The distance between the most apical part of the root and of the lesion to the maxillary sinus was measured on CBCT images before the surgery. Patient-related outcomes were recorded. Results Out of 35 patients evaluated, 21 were selected according with the selection criteria for a total of 27 roots and 29 canals treated. After 12 months, 18 patients showed a complete healing whereas three demonstrated incomplete healing. Consequently, the success rate in this study was 85.7% after one year. In 28.5% (6 patients) there was a perforation of the Schneiderian membrane that didn’t seem to affect the outcome. All patients kept the molar one year later. The pain level decreased significantly over the time during the first week after surgery. Conclusion Microsurgical Endodontic treatment of the upper molar teeth should be considered a valid and predictable treatment option even in case of Schneiderian membrane perforation. Future clinical studies with a larger sample size are needed to compare the results obtained.

Abstract

We report on the discovery of \geq 100 MeV {\gamma} rays from the binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board Fermi. The system comprises a radio pulsar in orbit around a Be star. We report on LAT observations from near apastron to ~ 60 days after the time of periastron, tp, on 2010 December 15. No {\gamma}-ray emission was detected from this source when it was far from periastron. Faint {\gamma}-ray emission appeared as the pulsar approached periastron. At ~ tp + 30d, the \geq 100 MeV {\gamma}-ray flux increased over a period of a few days to a peak flux 20-30 times that seen during the pre-periastron period, but with a softer spectrum. For the following month, it was seen to be variable on daily time scales, but remained at ~ 1 - 4 \times 10^-6 cm^-2 s^-1 before starting to fade at ~ tp + 57d. The total {\gamma}-ray luminosity observed during this period is comparable to the spin-down power of the pulsar. Simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of the source showed no corresponding dramatic changes in radio and X-ray flux between the pre-periastron and post-periastron flares. Abstract

The flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 454.3 underwent an extraordinary outburst in 2009 December when it became the brightest gamma-ray source in the sky for over 1 week. Its daily flux measured with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope at photon energiesE > 100 MeV reached F-100 = 22 +/- 1 x 10(6) photon cm(-2) s(-1), representing the highest daily flux of any blazar ever recorded in high-energy. -rays. It again became the brightest source in the sky in 2010 April, triggering a pointed-mode observation by Fermi. The correlated. -ray temporal and spectral properties during these exceptional events are presented and discussed. The main results show flux variability over time scales less than 3 hr and very mild spectral variability with an indication of gradual hardening preceding major flares. The light curves during periods of enhanced activity in 2008 July-August and 2010 December show strong resemblance, with a flux plateau of a few days preceding the major flare. No consistent loop pattern emerged in the. -ray spectral index versus the flux plane as would be expected in acceleration and cooling scenarios. The maximum energy of a photon from 3C 454.3 is approximate to 20 GeV and a minimum Doppler factor of approximate to 13 is derived. The gamma-ray spectrum of 3C 454.3 shows a significant spectral break between approximate to 2 and 3 GeV that is very weakly dependent on the flux state, even when the flux changes by an order of magnitude.

Abstract

GX 339–4 has been one of the key sources for unravelling the accretion ejection coupling in accreting stellar mass black holes. After a long period of quiescence between 1999 and 2002, GX 339–4 underwent a series of 4 outbursts that have been intensively observed by many ground based observatories (radio/infrared/optical) and satellites (X‐rays). Here, we present some specific results of these broad band observational campaigns, focusing on the optical‐infrared/X‐ray flux correlations over the four outbursts. Thanks to our extensive data‐set, we found a strong OIR/X‐ray correlation over four decades with the presence of a break in the correlation index. These results seem to favour a synchrotron self‐Compton origin for the X‐ray emission in GX 339–4 during the hard state and could also provide an indirect detection of the break frequency in the synchrotron spectrum of the compact jets.

Abstract

We investigate the early phase of the first state change during the 2008 September-November outburst of H1743-322, first detected by the INTEGRAL satellite. We analyse INTEGRAL, RXTE, Swift, and XMM/Newton observations, which provide coverage of the quiescence to outburst evolution in the 3-200 keV range every few days. The energy spectra are well fitted by a phenomenological model consisting of an exponentially cut-off power law plus a disc component. A more physical model of thermal Comptonisation (and a disc) represents the spectra equally well. In a first phase (up to MJD 54760), the photon index and temperature of the disc do not vary significantly, and have values reminiscent of the Hard State (HS). The timing analysis is also consistent with that of a HS, and shows in particular a rather high degree of variability (~30%), and a strong ~0.5-1 Hz QPO with its first harmonic. The timing and spectral characteristics of H1743-322 are similar to those of the first HS during its 2003 outburst. After MJD 54760, a change to softer spectra and a ~5-6 Hz QPO indicate that the source underwent a state transition into a Hard-Intermediate State (HIMS). We observe in both states a correlation between the QPO frequency and the photon index, which indicates a strong link between the accretion disc, generally understood to determine the QPO frequency, and the corona, which determines the QPO power. The gradual disappearance of the QPO harmonic, and the slowly decreasing hard X-ray flux, imply that the accretion disc gradually moved inwards during the HS., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Letter to the Editor accepted for publication in A&A

The canonical hard state is associated with emission from all three fundamental accretion components: the accretion disk, the hot accretion disk corona and the jet. Our group has been working on the major questions of the hard state both observationally (with multi-wavelength campaigns using RXTE, SWIFT, SUZAKU, SPITZER, VLA, ATCA, SMARTS) and theoretically (through jet models that can fit entire SEDs). Through spectral and temporal analysis we seek to determine the geometry of accretion components, and relate the geometry to the formation and emission from a jet. In this presentation I will review the recent contributions of our group to the field, including the SWIFT results on the disk geometry at low accretion rates, the jet model fits to the hard state SEDs (including SPITZER data) of GRO J 1655-40, and the final results on the evolution of spectral (including X-ray, radio and infrared) and temporal properties of selected black holes in the hard states. I will also talk about impact of ASTROSAT to the science objectives of our group.

Abstract

International audience; Photolithography allows the fabrication of a solid polymer object through polymerization of a monomer resin by means of a laser source guided according to the data of computer aided design. However, one drawback of this method is the inaccuracy of the dimensions of the objects related to the shrinkage phenomenon which depends on the polymerization, on the laser flux and on the used sweeping procedure. In this paper, the deformation of an isolated voxel (elementary volume) or a voxel interacting with its neighbor is described. This simulation is based on a kinetic model that takes into account the gel effect and a model of volumetric variation due to the difference of the length of the bonds between the monomer and polymer molecules

Abstract

International audience; The INTEGRAL satellite extensively observed XTE J1817-330 and XTE J1818-245 which underwent X-ray outbursts from, respectively, Jan. 2006 and Feb. 2005 to Nov. 2006, during the INTEGRAL Core Program and Target of Opportunity observations, dedicated to new X-ray novae, and during Galactic Bulge observations. We report some results of simultaneous multiwavelength observations of these black holes candidates performed with INTEGRAL, RXTE and with REM and ATCA for XTE J1817-330 and Swift, VLA, REM and EMMI for XTE J1818-245. Both sources are active up to 250 keV. Component evolutions occur in the accretion disk and in the hot medium (well fitted by Comptonization), with spectral changes in the hard and soft components correlated with puzzling changes in the radio and excess over a black body disk in the optical. ©2008 American Institute of Physics

Abstract

Summary form only given. We have developed a laser stereolithography process associated to a Computer Aided Design to make layer by layer three-dimensional objects in polymer. Stereolithography (SL) is one of the most common methods of transforming computer aided design (CAD) data to obtain a solid. The part itself is built layer by layer in a vat of photocurable liquid monomer that hardens on light exposure. In the biomedical field, complex anatomical parts can be built by SL using medical imaging data (CT-Scanner or MRI). The hard three-dimensional models realization from scanographical data helps to give an understanding of the shape, orientation, relative location and size of internal structures and have been used for diagnosis, operation planning, design of implants and surgical templates. The availability of these models will furnish to surgeons a diagnostical and logistical tool particularly fruitful, especially for clinical complex cases. Now, our objective is to make implants directly by stereolithography based on a ceramic process fabrication using SL, i.e. by using the photopolymerization of a viscous mixture made of resin and hydroxyapatite and then followed by a sintering process to eliminate organic part.

Abstract

The hard X-ray sensitivity and arcminute position accuracy of the recently launched International Gamma-Ray Laboratory (INTEGRAL) has lead to the (re-)discovery of a class of heavily absorbed hard X-ray sources lying in the Galactic plane. We report on the analysis of an XMM observation of such a source IGR J16320-4751 = AX J1631.9-4752. Our analysis allowed us to obtain the most accurate X-ray position to date (Rodriguez et al. 2003), and to identify a likely infrared counterpart (Tomsick et al. 2003). We present the detailed analysis of the IGR J1632-4751 XMM spectra. The PN spectrum can be well represented by a single powerlaw or a comptonized spectrum with a high equivalent absorption column density of ~ 2 x10^{23} cm^{-2}. The current analysis and the comparison with the properties of other sources favor the possibility that the source is a Galactic X-Ray Binary (XRB). The identification of two candidate IR counterparts is in good agreement with this identification. The hard spectrum previously seen with ASCA, and the brightness of the candidate counterparts indicate that IGR J1632-4751 is most probably a highly absorbed High Mass X-ray Binary, hosting a neutron star.

Abstract

We have compiled contemporaneous broadband observations of the black hole candidate X-ray binary GX 339-4 when in the low/hard X-ray state in 1981 and 1997. The data clearly reveal the presence of two spectral components, with thermal and non-thermal spectra, overlapping in the optical -- near-infrared bands. The non-thermal component lies on an extrapolation of the radio spectrum of the source, and we interpret it as optically thin synchrotron emission from the powerful, compact jet in the system. Detection of this break from self-absorbed to optically thin synchrotron emission from the jet allows us to place a firm lower limit on the ratio of jet (synchrotron) to X-ray luminosities of $\geq 5$%. We further note that extrapolation of the optically thin synchrotron component from the near-infrared to higher frequencies coincides with the observed X-ray spectrum, supporting models in which the X-rays could originate via optically thin synchrotron emission from the jet (possibly instead of Comptonisation)., Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Abstract

The authors describe the main techniques for rapid prototyping used in the medical field, with particular emphasis on Laser stereolithography. They describe the basics of the technique as well as the procedures they currently use to construct anatomic specimens from scanned images. For more than 10 years, the targets of researchers in the field of bone reconstruction in craniofacial surgery have been: to design a system to acquire data directly from CT-scans, to optimize modelling, processing and materials, to verify the possibility of producing prefabricated prostheses with data from preoperative models (22 cases). The target of integrating this technique into therapeutic protocols has been reached. The current trend in research is to produce prostheses from biocompatible materials directly from CT scan data by Laser stereolithography.

Abstract

We report millimeter observations of the line of sight to the recently discovered Soft Gamma Repeater, SGR 1627-41, which has been tentatively associated with the supernova remnant SNR G337.0-0.1 Among the eight molecular clouds along the line of sight to SGR 1627-41, we show that SNR G337.0-0.1 is probably interacting with one of the most massive giant molecular clouds (GMC) in the Galaxy, at a distance of 11 kpc from the sun. Based on the high extinction to the persistent X-ray counterpart of SGR 1627-41, we present evidence for an association of this new SGR with the SNR G337.0-0.1; they both appear to be located on the near side of the GMC. This is the second SGR located near an extraordinarily massive GMC. We suggest that SGR 1627-41 is a neutron star with a high transverse velocity (~ 1,000 \kms) escaping the young (~ 5,000 years) supernova remnant G337.0-0.1, 17 pages, including 2 figures. Abstract

Objectifs Nous presentons les resultats d’une collaboration originale de la gestion des urgences tomodensitometriques entre l’hopital Fecamp (hopital de proximite) et l’hopital regional du Havre en tele-expertise. Materiels et methodes Entre juillet 1998 et decembre 2003, 1503 explorations tomodensitometriques pratiquees en urgence ont ete etudiees par tele expertise. Nous avons analyse sur ces 6 annees d’activite, le nombre de dossiers expertises, la repartition par region anatomique, les indications des examens et l’origine de la prescription. En dernier lieu, nous avons analyse les difficultes rencontrees autour de cette activite. Resultats Mille cinq cent trois dossiers ont ete adresses en tele-expertise sur 6 ans. Nous avons debute avec une activite en 1998 de 48 dossiers par an pour arriver actuellement a une moyenne de 350 dossiers/an avec une progression de pres de 10 % par an. La region anatomique la plus exploree reste le crâne avec 74,92 % des explorations, puis l’abdomen 11,64 %, le thorax 11,44 % et le rachis 2 %. L’indication premiere pour le crâne est la pathologie vasculaire (57,54 %) puis les traumatismes (24,95 %). Au niveau thoracique, 77 % des examens l’ont ete pour suspicion d’embolie pulmonaire. La pathologie traumatique cumulee thorax et abdomen represente environ 36 %. Les 2 services demandeurs sont les urgences (60 %) et la cardiologie (28 %). Le souci majeur actuellement rencontre est l’absence d’evolutivite de notre systeme TSI depuis 98 avec un nombre d’images compressees limitees a 80. Conclusion Devant la penurie de radiologues et les imperatifs de fonctionnement des hopitaux, cette experience de gestion des urgences par teletransmission peut etre la solution.

Abstract

Cardiac TVD is the major cause of graft failure in patients surviving more than 1 year post-transplantation. TVD is believed to manifest from an interplay between immunological and non-immunological factors, including dyslipidemia and immunosuppressive drugs. Together, these factors trigger events resulting in vascular injury represented by the formation of concentric, lipid-rich plaques. Endothelial cell (EC) injury is an initiating step of the disease process and mounting evidence suggests ECs, as well as smooth muscle cells (SMC), in lesions of allograft vessels, as well as the organ intersitium, derive in part from recipient bone marrow (BM) progenitor cells. We hypothesize that recipient BM-derived cells contribute to the allogeneic and reparative response in the arteries and myocardium of cardiac allografts. This project is designed to characterize the abundance, localization and fate of recipient BM-derived cells in cardiac allografts, as well as the effect of immunosuppression on these recipient cells. 129J murine hearts were transplanted heterotopically into C57BL/6 mice expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) in either BM cells. A subset of transplanted mice were immunosuppressed with FK506 (6 mg/kg/day). Mice were sacrificed on days 14 and 30. Hearts were examined using confocal and multi-photon microscopy. Recipient BM-derived cells localized to vessel walls and myocardium of transplanted hearts and demonstrated significantly increased seeding to the transplanted heart as compared to native heart controls in immunosuppressed and non-immunosuppressed allograft mice (p 0.05). Non-immunosuppressed and immunosuppressed mice showed 54% and 27% BM-derived recipient cell seeding to the transplanted heart, respectively, as determined on a denominator of total cardiac nuclei. Preliminary data suggests a subset of these cells also stain for vessel wall markers in allograft hearts. Thus, our data suggests recipient BM-derived cells migrate to the transplanted heart early after transplantation. Their functional roles and fate remains to be determined.

Abstract

Low-frequency microechography is a non-destructive technique, which is particularly suitable for the observation of surface defects and structure inside polymeric materials. Indeed, this method is based on the reflection of an acoustic wave at the surface of the sample which is primarily a function of the density and elastic properties of the material. A frequency of 25 MHz was chosen owing to the high absorption of the investigated material at high frequency. The purpose of this paper is to show the application of this technique to the local visualization of structure difference occurring in a polymer object manufactured by stereolithography. In particular, these differences are due to the variations of crosslinking density in photopolymers.
