Abstract: International audience; The monitoring of the water cycle at the Earth surface which tightly interacts with the climate change processes as well as a number of practical applications (agriculture, soil and water quality assessment, irrigation and water resource management, etc...) requires surface temperature measurements at local scale. Such is the goal of the Indian-French high spatio-temporal TRISHNA mission (Thermal infraRed Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural resource Assessment). The scientific objectives of the mission and research work conducted to consolidate the mission specifications are presented. Progress in modelling of surface fluxes is then discussed. The main specifications of the mission such as the revisit, the spatial resolution, the overpass time, the spectral bands and the orbit are analyzed and justified. The resulting baseline of the mission is given.

Abstract: Scheduled for launch in 2021, the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will be a truly unique mission that will provide high-temporal-frequency maps of surface water extents and elevation variations of global water bodies (lakes/reservoirs, rivers, estuaries, oceans, and sea ice) at higher spatial resolution than is available with current technologies (Biancamaria et al. 2016; Alsdorf et al. 2007). The primary instrument on SWOT is based on a Ka-band radar interferometer (KaRIN), which uses radar interferometery technology. The satellite will fly two radar antennas at either end of a 10-m (33 ft) mast, allowing it to measure the elevation of the surface along a 120-km (75 mi)-wide swath below. The availability of high-frequency and high-resolution maps of elevations and extents for surface water bodies and oceans will present unique opportunities to address numerous societally relevant challenges around the globe (Srinivasan et al. 2015). These opportunities may include such diverse and far-ranging applications as fisheries management, flood inundation mapping/risk mitigation/forecasting, wildlife conservation, global data assimilation for improving forecast of ocean tides and weather, reservoir management, climate change impacts and adaptation, and river discharge estimation, among others.

Abstract: To carry out functioning and dynamic vegetation studies, a temporal analysis is needed. So far, only data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites with Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors offer the required temporal resolution, but their spatial resolution is coarse (1.1 km). But, in many situations, the vegetation cover is heterogeneous and the 1.1 km AVHRR pixel contains several types of land use radiometrically different and is, in fact, a mixed pixel. Thus, the reflectance and consequently deduced parameters (NDVI, LAI, etc.) measured by AVHRR is actually average value and does not represent a value for each vegetation class present in the pixel. The objective is to extract the reflectance of each vegetation class from the mixed pixel using NOAA-AVHRR data and SPOT-HRV data simultaneously which give the proportions of each type of vegetation inside the mixed pixel through a classification map. MISTIGRI is a mission that has the originality of combining a high spatial resolution (approximate to 50 m) with a daily revisit in the thermal infrared (TIR). MISTIGRI is an experimental mission devoted to demonstrate the potential of such TIR data for future operational missions. The scientific goals and expected applications of the mission are described: they encompass the monitoring of (i) agricultural areas and related hydrological processes, (ii) urban areas, and (iii) coastal areas and continental waters. Then, the specifications on spatial resolution, revisit frequency, overpass time, and spectral configuration are justified. The strategy of the mission is based on the combination with a network of long-term experimental sites. It will also make possible observing some areas facing rapid climatic change. The choice of the orbit is presented. Finally, we give rapid overviews of both the instrumental concept and the proposed mission architecture.

Abstract: The description of ecosystem structure and functioning is necessary in view of the monitoring of vegetation resources dynamics. It is therefore necessary to have spatial and temporal resolutions allowing respectively the characterization of the horizontal structure and the functional cycles. The images from NOAA-AVHRR are largely used for monitoring vegetation. Mixed pixel reflectance obtained using moderate spatial resolution instrument can be approximated by using a linear mixture model. The land use information obtained from high spatial resolution data allows the deconvolution of the response of a mixed pixel into the different components responses. A methodological adjustment has been performed over a spatially complex area in the West Africa. For this study, M.S.R data have been obtained through the degradation of SPOT images. This simulation gave the opportunity to check all the parameters of the model and therefore to testify its reliability and its sensitivity. >

The method also enabled the parametrization of the soil water contained in a superficial tank which is conditioned by the principal properties of soils. Abstract: International audience; The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) is used to assess a realistic estimate of emissions by savanna fires from NOAA advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) satellite imagery during the Experiment for Regional Sources and Sinks of Oxidants (EXPRESSO) campaign. The daily amounts of gases released by biomass burning depend on burnt biomaterial, the mass of which is estimated from two independent methods: classification of vegetation formations (CV) or net primary productivity (NPP). The area of the burnt zone is derived from satellite imagery. The percent of burnt biomass or combustion factor (a) is determined by an adjustment procedure using two model runs and assumed to be 40%, a value consistent with the biomass wetness. The simulated CO redistribution is compared with aircraft measurements (tracks and profiles). Two events of 4 and 5 days are examined, where flights above forest and savanna zones have been performed. In this study we show that the main mechanisms of the chemical species spatial redistribution originates from mesoscale features. The RAMS results are in rather good agreement with the aircraft measurements (vertical profiles or horizontal legs) over forest and savanna. The difference between the CO simulated fields obtained from CV or NPP is weak (about 20% or 30%), and it is difficult to discriminate the best method because this difference is generally inferior to the gap between model and observations. One may consider this study as a preliminary approach to improve the estimate of released gases by biomass burning with the help of mesoscale modeling and the knowledge of the real sources.

Abstract: The paper presents an autoadaptive method of satellite images segmentation based on a description of the image by graphs. The method presented proposes a new approach using the morphological analysis of the dual graph of the segmentation. A quantification builds an image oversegmented in a connected components set forming a new digital grid. Morphological operations are applied to the graph corresponding to form significant segments by region growing. In the process of growth, the attributes of the regions are kept to enslave the process, but also to contribute to the interpretation of the relations of neighborhood and to understand the physics of detection used.

Abstract: This paper presents a functional characterization of West Africa's ecological systems using satellite data. It shows the capability of spatio-temporal determination of the hydrological budget well fitted to the chlorophyllian phenology. The method includes two parts: estimation of radiation budget at the earth surface, and actual evapotranspiration and, in addition, estimation of one hydrological budget and its capability to describe and possibly to predict growth process. The estimation of evaportranspiration is made with simplified relationships proposed by Jackson and Seguin. These descriptions need a limited number of input data, and their parametrization can be deduced from the main classes of vegetation. A hydrological budget model is then established using evapotranspiration, rainfall measurement, and the estimation of ground contribution at a suitable scale. In this model, we assume that the phenological state of the plant at a given time depends on the efficient stock of water during the months preceding the state development. The results show that the concept of the estimation of radiation budget at the earth surface and actual evapotranspiration can be applied generally for large areas at fine spatial resolution and the model of efficient water shows a good adjustment with the cycle normalized difference vegetation index.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. 13. GAPF (Geometrical and physical filter): a temporal filtering method for NOAA-HRPT data

Abstract: In order to reduce the problems of clouds, atmospheric variations, view angle effects, and the soil background variations in the high temporal frequency AVHRR data, a compositing technique is usually employed. Current compositing techniques use a single pixel selection criterion of outputing the input pixel of maximum value NDVI. Problems, however, exist due to the use and to the imperfection of the pixel selection criteria of the algorithm itself. The NDVI was found to have the maximum value under an ideal observation condition, while the single pixel selection criterion favors the large off-nadir sensor view angles. Consequently, the composited data still consist of substantial noise. To further reduce the noise, a new set of pixel selection filtering was proposed for compositing NDVI data. It consists of taking into account the biological characteristics and eliminating the temporal variations of the signal which are false. For this we used a mixed method of physical threshold and geometrical operations (GAPF: geometrical and physical filter). The association of the two criterion leads to a mixed `physical and biological' method. Abstract: International Altimetry Team., In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the “Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion., At the forefront of this support, we must obviously mention the space agencies CNES, ESA and NASA which have played and still play a decisive role in the development and launch of several prominent altimetry missions from the outset. Other agencies such as DLR, EUMETSAT, ISRO, NOAA, NSOAS and organizations such as CMEMS, also contribute significantly to developments in all forms of altimetry.
