Key Points Multimerization of p67C Ag as nanoparticle increases its immunogenicity. Vaccine efficacy of p67C Ag increases delivered as nanoparticles., Visual Abstract, East Coast fever (ECF), caused by Theileria parva, is the most important tick-borne disease of cattle in sub-Saharan Africa. Practical disadvantages associated with the currently used live-parasite vaccine could be overcome by subunit vaccines. An 80-aa polypeptide derived from the C-terminal portion of p67, a sporozoite surface Ag and target of neutralizing Abs, was the focus of the efforts on subunit vaccines against ECF and subjected to several vaccine trials with very promising results. However, the vaccination regimen was far from optimized, involving three inoculations of 450 μg of soluble p67C (s-p67C) Ag formulated in the Seppic adjuvant Montanide ISA 206 VG. Hence, an improved formulation of this polypeptide Ag is needed. In this study, we report on two nanotechnologies that enhance the bovine immune responses to p67C. Individually, HBcAg-p67C (chimeric hepatitis B core Ag virus-like particles displaying p67C) and silica vesicle (SV)–p67C (s-p67C adsorbed to SV-140-C18, octadecyl-modified SVs) adjuvanted with ISA 206 VG primed strong Ab and T cell responses to p67C in cattle, respectively. Coimmunization of cattle (Bos taurus) with HBcAg-p67C and SV-p67C resulted in stimulation of both high Ab titers and CD4 T cell response to p67C, leading to the highest subunit vaccine efficacy we have achieved to date with the p67C immunogen. These results offer the much-needed research depth on the innovative platforms for developing effective novel protein-based bovine vaccines to further the advancement.

An approach to identify medium-mass ejectiles from peripheral heavy-ion reactions in the energy region of 15 MeV/nucleon is developed for data obtained with a large acceptance magnetic spectrometer. This spectrometer is equipped with a focal plane multidetector, providing position, angle, energy loss and residual energy of the ions along with measurement of the time-of-flight. Ion trajectory reconstruction is performed at high order and ion mass is obtained with a resolution of better than 1/150. For the unambiguous particle identification however, the reconstruction of both the atomic number Z and the ionic charge q of the ions is critical and it is suggested, within this work, to be performed prior to mass identification. The new proposed method was successfully applied to MAGNEX spectrometer data, for identifying neutron-rich ejectiles related to multinucleon transfer generated in the 70Zn+64Ni collision at 15 MeV/nucleon. This approach opens up the possibility of employing heavy-ion reactions with medium-mass beams below the Fermi energy (i.e., in the region 15–25 MeV/nucleon) in conjunction with large acceptance ray tracing spectrometers, first, to study the mechanism(s) of nucleon transfer in these reactions and, second, to produce and study very neutron-rich or even new nuclides in previously unexplored regions of the nuclear landscape. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Pulmonary hypertension in the neonate is associated with cardiopulmonary disturbances and neurodevelopment morbidity. The patent ductus arteriosus is a persistent fetal shunt that can be pathologic vs supportive in the setting of neonatal pulmonary hypertension. Understanding the underlying pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension and the cardiopulmonary effects of various phenotypes can guide management in this vulnerable population. In this narrative, we will summarize the physiologic principles of pulmonary hypertension, the impact of the patent ductus arteriosus on various phenotypes, and the utility of serial targeted neonatal echocardiography to individualize clinical assessment and management.

Background: Nucleon transfer reactions are selective tools for nuclear physics investigations. The theoretical and computational limits affecting in the past their data analysis could be nowadays surmounted thanks to the advent of methods with refined approximations and constraints, even when heavy-ion collisions are considered. Purpose: Modern microscopic calculations of heavy-ion-induced transfer reactions combined with precise experimental data offer the chance for accurately testing different reaction models as well as the nuclear structure description of the involved nuclear states. Method: Single proton and neutron transfer reactions were measured with the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer for the O-18 + Ca-40 system at 15.3A MeV. Excitation energy spectra and angular differential cross section distributions were extracted. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations performed in distorted wave and coupled channel Born approximation. The use of a coupled channel equivalent polarization potential to effectively describe the coupling effects affecting the initial state interaction is also considered. Spectroscopic amplitudes derived from a large-scale shell model with appropriate interactions adapted for the involved nuclei are employed. Results: Our theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experimental data, without the need for any scaling factor, validating the adopted reaction and nuclear structure parameters. Moreover, under the present experimental conditions, a weak dependence of the obtained results on the choice of the reaction models was observed. Conclusions: The good agreement between experimental and theoretical results validates the reliability of the parameter sets entering the calculations. They are extracted from or tested in complementary analyses of other reaction channels under the same experimental conditions. Such a multichannel approach represents the best option to pursue a solid, comprehensive, and model-independent description of the single-nucleon transfer reactions. The successful description of the present one-nucleon transfer data is also propaedeutic to the accurate assessment, under the same theoretical description, of higher-order transfer processes, like the sequential nucleon transfer mechanisms which are in competition with the direct charge exchange reactions.

The rate estimation of nuclear reactions induced in high intensity laser-target interaction (≥1016 W/cm2), is strongly depending on the neutron detection efficiency and ion charge discrimination, according to particles involved in exit open-channels. Ion discrimination is basically performed by means of analysis of pits observed on track detector, which is critically dependent on calibration and/or fast TOF devices based on SiC and diamond detectors. Last setup is used to determine the ion energy and to obtain a rough estimation of yields. However, for each TOF interval, the dependence of yield from the energy deposited in the detector sensitive region, introduces a distortion in the ion spectra. Moreover, if two ion species are present in the same spectrum, the discrimination of their contribution is not attainable. In this paper a new method is described which allows to discriminate the contribution of two ion species in the wide energy range of nuclear reactions induced in laser-target interactions. The method is based on charge response of two TOF-SiC detectors, of suitable thicknesses, placed in adjacent positions. In presence of two ion species, the response of the detectors, associated with different energy losses, can determine the ion specific contribution to each TOF interval.

The development of a safe and effective adjuvant that amplifies the immune response to an antigen is important for vaccine delivery. In this study, we developed pristine mesoporous carbon hollow spheres as high-capacity vaccine protein nanocarriers and safe adjuvants for boosting the immune response. Mono-dispersed invaginated mesostructured hollow carbon spheres (IMHCSs) have an average particle size of similar to 200 nm, large pore size of 15 nm, and high pore volume of 2.85 cm(3).g(-1). IMHCSs exhibited a very high loading capacity (1,040 mu g.mg(-1)) towards ovalbumin (OVA, a model antigen), controlled OVA release behavior, excellent safety profile to normal cells, and high antigen delivery efficacy towards macrophages. In vivo immunization studies in mice demonstrated that OVA-loaded IMHCSs induced a 3-fold higher IgG response compared to a traditional adjuvant QuilA used in veterinary vaccine research. OVA delivered by IMHCSs induced a higher IgG1 concentration than IgG2a, indicating a T-helper 2 (Th2)-polarized response. Interferon-gamma and interleukin-4 concentration analysis revealed both T-helper 1 (Th1) and Th2 immune responses induced by OVA-loaded IMHCSs. IMHCSs are safer adjuvants than QuilA. Our study revealed that pure IMHCSs without further functionalization can be used as a safe adjuvant for promoting Th2-biased immune responses for vaccine delivery. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of (N/Z) isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin “migration”, that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

A 10 16 W/cm 2 Asterix laser pulse intensity, 1315 nm wavelength, 300 ps pulse duration, was employed at PALS laboratory of Prague, to irradiate thick and thin primary CD 2 targets placed into the high vacuum chamber. The laser irradiation produces non-equilibrium plasma with deuterons and carbon ions emission with energy up to about 4 MeV per charge state, as measured by time-of-flight (TOF) techniques by using ion collectors and silicon carbide detectors. Accelerated deuterium ions may induce high D–D cross section for fusion processes generating 3 MeV protons and 2.5 MeV neutrons, as measured by TOF analyses. In order to increase the mono-energetic proton yield, secondary CD 2 targets can be availed to be irradiated by the plasma-accelerated deuterons. Experiments demonstrated that high intensity laser pulses can be employed to promote nuclear reactions from which characteristic ion streams may be developed. Results open new scenario for applications of laser-generated plasma to the fields of ion sources and ion accelerators.

Immunization to the model protein antigen ovalbumin (OVA) is investigated using MCM-41 mesoporous silica nanoparticles as a novel vaccine delivery vehicle and adjuvant system in mice. The effects of amino surface functionalization and adsorption time on OVA adsorption to nanoparticles are assessed. Amino-functionalized MCM-41 (AM-41) shows an effect on the amount of OVA binding, with 2.5-fold increase in binding capacity (72 mg OVA/g AM-41) compared to nonfunctionalized MCM-41 (29 mg OVA/g MCM-41). Immunization studies in mice with a 10 μg dose of OVA adsorbed to AM-41 elicits both antibody and cell-mediated immune responses following three subcutaneous injections. Immunizations at a lower 2 μg dose of OVA adsorbed to AM-41 particles results in an antibody response but not cell-mediated immunity. The level of antibody responses following immunization with nanoformulations containing either 2 μg or 10 μg of OVA are only slightly lower than that in mice which receive 50 μg OVA adjuvanted with QuilA, a crude mixture of saponins extracted from the bark of the Quillaja saponaria Molina tree. This is a significant result, since it demonstrates that AM-41 nanoparticles are self-adjuvanting and elicit immune responses at reduced antigen doses in vivo compared to a conventional delivery system. Importantly, there are no local or systemic negative effects in animals injected with AM-41. Histopathological studies of a range of tissue organs show no changes in histopathology of the animals receiving nanoparticles over a six week period. These results establish the biocompatible MCM-41 silica nanoparticles as a new method for vaccine delivery which incorporates a self-adjuvant effect.

Bovine anaplasmosis or cattle-tick fever is a tick-borne haemolytic disease caused by the rickettsial haemoparasite Anaplasma marginale in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. While difficult to express, the proteins VirB9-1 and VirB10 are immunogenic components of the outer membrane type IV secretion system that have been identified as candidate antigens for vaccines targeting of A. marginale. Soluble VirB9-1 and VirB10 were successfully expressed using Pichia pastoris. When formulated with the self-adjuvanting silica vesicles, SV-100 (diameter: 50 nm, and pore entrance size: 6 nm), 200 µg of VirB9-1 and VirB10 were adsorbed per milligram of nanoparticle. The VirB9-1 and VirB10, SV-100 formulations were shown to induce higher antibody responses in mice compared to the QuilA formulations. Moreover, intracellular staining of selected cytokines demonstrated that both VirB9-1 and VirB10 formulations induced cell-mediated immune responses in mice. Importantly, the SV-100 VirB9-1 and VirB10 complexes were shown to specifically stimulate bovine T-cell linages derived from calves immunised with A. marginale outer membrane fractions, suggesting formulations will be useful for bovine immunisation and protection studies. Overall this study demonstrates the potential of self-adjuvanting silica vesicle formulations to address current deficiencies in vaccine delivery applications.

Anaplasma marginale is a devastating tick-borne pathogen causing anaplasmosis in cattle and results in significant economic loss to the cattle industry worldwide. Currently, there is no widely accepted vaccine against A. marginale. New generation subunit vaccines against A. marginale, which are much safer, more efficient and cost-effective, are in great need. The A. marginale outer membrane protein VirB9-1 is a promising antigen for vaccination. We previously have shown that soluble recombinant VirB9-1 protein can be expressed and purified from Escherichia coli and induce a high level of humoral and cellular immunity in mice. In this study, we re-formulated the nanovaccines using the partially-purified VirB9-1 protein as the antigen and hollow nano-size silica vesicles (SV-100) as the adjuvant. We simplified the purification method to obtain the partially-purified antigen VirB9-1 with a six-fold higher yield. The new formulations using the partially-purified VirB9-1 protein achieved higher antibody and cell-mediated immune responses compared to the purified ones. This finding suggests that the partially-purified VirB9-1 protein performs better than the purified ones in the vaccination against A. marginale, and a certain level of contaminants in the protein antigen can be self-adjuvant and boost immunogenicity together with the nanoparticle adjuvant. This may lead to finding a “Goldilocks” level of contaminants. The new nanovaccine formulation using partially-purified antigens along with nanoparticle adjuvants offers an alternative strategy for making cheaper veterinary vaccines.

Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Au ions with maximum charge states 58+ and with the kinetic energy in a region of ∼100 MeV were recorded. The influence of various experimental conditions is presented and discussed.

We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. We show that data are better described by SMM than by GEMINI in agreement with the fact that multifragmentation is responsible for fragment production at excitation energies around 3 MeV/nucleon., 16 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables Soumis \`a Nuclear Physics A

The iodine laser PALS, operated at the fundamental and third harmonic frequencies (wavelengths 1315 and 438 nm, respectively), was used to generate plasmas on various targets (Au,CF2, etc.). The investigation was performed at energies up to 400 and 250 J for 1ω and 3ω, respectively, in the 300 ps pulses. In these conditions several samples of solid state nuclear track detectors CR39 type, have been located at suitable geometrical positions to explore their capability to measure main parameters of ions emitted from the laser-produced plasmas. Track diameters and densities were observed on the uncovered detectors exposed to a lot of laser shots. Emitted ions in the energy range up to few tens of MeV, have been observed on the basis of ion collector TOF spectra. Track pattern results are shown and discussed in comparison with mentioned spectra and simulations.

In past experiments, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at ELab(112,124Sn)=35 A.MeV beam energy by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. From a quantitative comparison of cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission of the Projectile-Like Fragments, it resulted that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn +58 Ni neutron poor one. In contrast, no sizable difference was found for Statistical Fission mechanism. The observed difference in the strength of the Dynamical effects could arise from the difference in entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content. In order to disentangle Isospin effects from effects due to the different masses of the two systems, a new experiment 124Xe+64Zn at 35 A.MeV beam energy has been recently carried out.

We discuss experimental data concerning 40,48Ca+ 40,48Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon; the 4π multi-detector Chimera has been used as detection device. Effects that can be attributed to the neutron to proton ratios (N/Z) degree of freedom have been investigated. From the analysis of experimental data it seems that the neutron richness of the interacting system plays an important role on the evolution of fusion-like sources formed in semi-central collisions. In particular, it is observed that the larger is the neutron content and the larger is the emission of heavy residues. Experimental data have been compared with CoMD-II model calculations; a moderately stiff symmetry energy should be used to reproduce satisfactorily the data. A thermodynamical analysis on fusion-like sources has been also performed. In semi-peripheral collisions, isospin diffusion signals have been found. They have been investigated by analyzing isobaric emission ( 7Li/7Be) of quasi-projectile sources. Experimental data indicate that an incomplete N/Z mixing is reached during the interaction phase.

CR-39 samples are commonly employed for fast neutron detection in fusion reactors and in inertial confinement fusion experiments. The literature reported efficiencies are strongly depending on experimental conditions and, in some cases, highly dispersed. The present note analyses the dependence of efficiency as a function of various parameters and experimental conditions in both the radiator-assisted and the stand-alone CR-39 configurations. Comparisons of literature experimental data with Monte Carlo calculations and optimized efficiency values are shown and discussed.

Background: In heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies the production of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is due to different reaction mechanisms and different time scales, ranging from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from the equilibrated system.Purpose: We compare the IMF statistical and dynamical emission probabilities in collisions of a neutron-rich $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}+^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ system and a neutron-poor $^{112}\mathrm{Sn}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ system at the laboratory energy of 35 $A$ MeV.Method: The IMFs production mechanism in semiperipheral reactions has been investigated in our previous works. In this paper, the analysis is expanded for the same set of data and production cross sections have been evaluated for dynamical and statistical emission in a coherent way for light and heavy fragments.Results: The data analysis has evidenced a strong competition between dynamical and statistical emission mechanisms. Probability of the dynamical emission of IMFs is strongly influenced by the ($N/Z$) ratio of the colliding system.Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the statistical emission is equally probable for the two systems, while the dynamical emission is enhanced for the neutron-rich system, especially for heavy fragments ($Z\ensuremath{\ge}6$). The observed effect points at a high sensitivity of the prompt-dynamical emission to the ($N/Z$) ratio of a given system.

Deuterium-Deuterium fusion processes were generated by focusing the 3 TW PALS Laser on solid deuterated polyethylene targets placed in vacuum. Deuterium ion acceleration of the order of 4 MeV was obtained using laser irradiance Iλ 2 ∼ 5 × 1016 W μ m2 /cm2 on the target. Thin and thick targets, at low and high density, were irradiated and plasma properties were monitored “on line” and “off line”. The ion emission from plasma was monitored with Thomson Parabola Spectrometer, track detectors and ion collectors. Fast semiconductor detectors based on SiC and fast plastic scintillators, both employed in time-of-flight configuration, have permitted to detect the characteristic 3.0 MeV protons and 2.45 MeV neutrons emission from the nuclear fusion reactions. From massive absorbent targets we have evaluated the neutron flux by varying from negligible values up to about 5 × 107 neutrons per laser shot in the case of foams targets, indicating a reaction rate of the order of 108 fusion events per laser shot using “advanced targets”.

Background: In heavy ion collision at the Fermi energies Isospin equilibration processes occur- ring when nuclei with different charge/mass asymmetries interacts have been investigated to get information on the nucleon-nucleon Iso-vectorial effective interaction. Purpose: In this paper, for the system 48Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon, we investigate on this process by means of an observable tightly linked to isospin equilibration processes and sensitive in exclusive way to the dynamical stage of the collision. From the comparison with dynamical model calculations we want also to obtain information on the Iso-vectorial effective microscopic interaction. Method: The average time derivative of the total dipole associated to the relative motion of all emitted charged particles and fragments has been determined from the measured charges and velocities by using the 4? multi-detector CHIMERA. The average has been determined for semi- peripheral collisions and for different charges Zb of the biggest produced fragment. Experimental evidences collected for the systems 27Al+48Ca and 27Al+40Ca at 40 MeV/nucleon used to support this novel method of investigation are also discussed., Submitted for publication on Phys. In children or adolescents who experiences severe traumatic events, including situations where someone's life (themselves and/or parents' lives) is threatened, or when major injuries occur (e.g., victims or witnesses of physical/sexual abuse), or victims of a car accidents or natural disasters, the risk of developing a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) becomes more likely. The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, has recently suggested that PTSD related to child sex abuse, can manifest with unique clinical patterns, including specific signs and symptoms of varying clinical severity such as loosing interest in social activities, age-inappropriate behaviors, and loss of talking skills; other leading hallmarks are the tendency, in young and adult life, to repeat some forms of behavior perpetrated before against themselves. In addition, molecular genetic studies have recently demonstrated that abused children who develops PTSD, might experience a biologically and specific form of PTSD, different from other types of trauma causing this disorder, which include distinct genomic alterations and unique epigenetic DNA methylation profiles. We now report on a Pilot Multicenter Research's Study from the Institute of Neurological Science (ISN), the National Research Council of Italy (CNR); the study involves several experts on this topic, including molecular genetists, pediatrician and pediatric neurologists, child neuropsychiatrists, and psychologists. Main purpose of the study is to evaluate genetic and epigenetic influences in developing long-term neurobehavioral disorders and pediatric psychology disturbances related to the child abuse. In order to evaluated effect of epigenetic in PTSD related to child abuse, patients have been subdivided into three major class: 1) minors victims of child abuse who developed PTSD; 2) minors victims of child abuse who did not develop PTSD; and 3) minors who developed PTSD from other causes rather the child abuse. Based on RNA and DNA analysis from blood and saliva specimen, the experimental strategy consists of two parts: (i) the genetic screening to evaluate the role of specific risk allelic variants of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and Variable Numbers of Tandem Repeats (VNTRs) found in FKBP5 and MAOA genes related to PTDS; (ii) the detection of DNA methylation status of promoters and the quantitative measurement of gene expression. Our preliminary data seem to identify a strong correlation with epigenetic changes in both genes implicated in risk of PTSD.

Collisions of a very heavy 197 Au + 197 Au system have been studied at an energy of 15 MeV/nucleon with the aim to investigate a possible change of the energy dissipation mechanism from one-body dissipation (presumably dominating at low excitation energies) to two-body dissipation. The experiment was carried out in 4π geometry using the CHIMERA multidetector array. A class of ternary events satisfying nearly complete balance of mass numbers was selected. Preliminary results suggest that the selected ternary events represent mostly prompt ternary partitions of the colliding system, in which the lightest fragment is quite massive. In the light of theoretical predictions of Cârjan, Sierk and Nix this result may imply that the observed ternary reactions are driven by the two-body dissipation mechanism already at 15 MeV/nucleon.

Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons, and α -particles, have been measured at very forward angles ( 0.7 ° ⩽ θ lab ⩽ 7 ° ), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission in E / A = 44 and 77 MeV 40 Ar + 27 Al collisions. The observed correlations are similar for the two reactions at E / A = 44 and 77 MeV, except for peaks originating from resonance decays, which are larger at the lower bombarding energy. Particle-velocity gated correlation functions are presented, and possible implications on the time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF, are discussed.

We perform molecular dynamics simulations of screening by electrons in low energy nuclear reactions, especially between hydrogen isotopes. Quantum effects that corresponds to the Pauli and Heisenberg principle are enforced by constraints. We show that the enhancement of the average cross-section and of its variance is due to the perturbations induced by the electrons. This gives a correlation between the maximum amplitudes of the inter-nuclear oscillational motion and the enhancement factor. It suggests that the chaotic behaviour of the electronic motion affects the magnitude of the enhancement factor.

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011. © Owned by the authors, 2012.

We show the properties of the tagging system for exotic beams coupled to the CHIMERA detector. In particular, the characteristics of a newly developed large surface MicroChannel Plate will be discussed. Timing and efficiency of this instrument have been investigated. Preliminary results of tests performed with radioactive beams and alpha sources are presented.

A quantitative comparison is made between the absolute cross sections associated with statistical and dynamical emission of heavy fragments in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35A MeV beam energy using the multidetector CHIMERA. The result shows that the dynamical process is about twice as probable in the neutron-rich 124Sn+64Ni system as in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron-poor one. This unexpected and significant difference indicates that the reaction mechanism is strongly dependent on the entrance-channel isospin (N/Z) content.

Intermediate energy beams of light exotic nuclei have been produced at LNS by the FRIBs facility. Thanks to these beams, a complex study of the structure of halo nuclei in the 11 Be region has been started exploiting the performances of the CHIMERA array.

The CHIMERA 4/spl pi/ detector trigger system is described. The trigger decisions are based on a combination of geometrical multiplicity of detected particles and other logic signals. The trigger can manage the buffer memory of the used analog to digital converters. This allows performance of parallel data conversion and readout and substantial improvement of the acquisition system dead-time performances. The trigger module generates all the necessary gate signals for the converters and the control signals necessary to synchronize the readout. It also allows the remote control of the whole system.

We have built and tested a computational unit for on-line processing of special algorithms to be embedded in the central processing unit VERSAmodule Eurocard (CPU VME)-crate of the CHIMERA data acquisition system. The computational unit consists of a number of VME digital signal processor (DSP)-based commercial boards delivering 720 MFlops/board.

CHIMERA is a 4π multidetector for charged particles available at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN‐LNS). A new method to measure the time scale of the emission of nuclear fragments is described, together with some applications in the field of the isospin dynamics of heavy‐ion collisions. Competition between fusion‐like and binary reactions near the energy threshold for nuclear multifragmentation is discussed. Opportunities are pointed out to use the detector at low and intermediate energies using the kinematical‐coincidence method.

Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) is widely distributed in cattle industries and causes significant economic losses worldwide annually. A limiting factor in the development of subunit vaccines for BVDV is the need to elicit both antibody and T-cell-mediated immunity as well as addressing the toxicity of adjuvants. In this study, we have prepared novel silica vesicles (SV) as the new generation antigen carriers and adjuvants. With small particle size of 50 nm, thin wall (similar to 6 nm), large cavity (similar to 40 nm) and large entrance size (5.9 nm for SV-100 and 16 nm for SV-140), the SV showed high loading capacity (similar to 250 mu g/mg) and controlled release of codon-optimised E2 (oE2) protein, a major immunogenic determinant of BVDV. The in vivo functionality of the system was validated in mice immunisation trials comparing oE2 plus Quil A (50 mu g of oE2 plus 10 mu g of Quil A, a conventional adjuvant) to the oE2/SV-140 (50 mu g of oE2 adsorbed to 250 mu g of SV-140) or oE2/SV-140 together with 10 mu g of Quil A. Compared to the oE2 plus Quil A, which generated BVDV specific antibody responses at a titre of 10(4), the oE2/SV-140 group induced a 10 times higher antibody response. In addition, the cell-mediated response, which is essential to recognise and eliminate the invading pathogens, was also found to be higher [1954-2628 spot forming units (SFU)/million cells] in mice immunised with oE2/SV-140 in comparison to oE2 plus Quil A (512-1369 SFU/million cells). Our study has demonstrated that SV can be used as the next-generation nanocarriers and adjuvants for enhanced veterinary vaccine delivery. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Our work focuses on the application of mesoporous silica nanoparticles as a combined delivery vehicle and adjuvant for vaccine applications. Here we present results using the viral protein, E2, from bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). BVDV infection occurs in the target species of cattle and sheep herds worldwide and is therefore of economic importance. E2 is a major immunogenic determinant of BVDV and is an ideal candidate for the development of a subunit based nanovaccine using mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Hollow type mesoporous silica nanoparticles with surface amino functionalisation (termed HMSA) were characterised and assessed for adsorption and desorption of E2. A codon-optimised version of the E2 protein (termed Opti-E2) was produced in Escherichia coli. HMSA (120 nm) had an adsorption capacity of 80 μg Opti-E2 per mg HMSA and once bound E2 did not dissociate from the HMSA. Immunisation studies in mice with a 20 μg dose of E2 adsorbed to 250 μg HMSA was compared to immunisation with Opti-E2 (50 μg) together with the traditional adjuvant Quillaja saponaria Molina tree saponins (QuilA, 10 μg). The humoral responses with the Opti-E2/HMSA nanovaccine although slightly lower than those obtained for the Opti-E2 + QuilA group demonstrated that HMSA particles are an effective adjuvant that stimulated E2-specific antibody responses. Importantly the cell-mediated immune responses were consistently high in all mice immunised with Opti-E2/HMSA nanovaccine formulation. Therefore we have shown the Opti-E2/HMSA nanoformulation acts as an excellent adjuvant that gives both T-helper 1 and T-helper 2 mediated responses in a small animal model. This study has provided proof-of-concept towards the development of an E2 subunit nanoparticle based vaccine.
