The crystallization behaviour and Curie temperatures of Fe−(Nb,Cu)−Si−B metallic glasses were studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomagnetic gravimetry (TMG) and X-ray diffraction. The agreement between the DSC and TMG results was complete. For all Fe−Si−B amorphous alloys, two-peak crystallization was observed with the primary crystallization of α-Fe(Si) followed by eutectic crystallisation. The effects of Cu and Nb additions on the crystallization behaviour and on the activation energies for each stage of the crystallization process of Fe−Si−B glass were investigated.

Growth kinetics of γ2, γ1, and γ phases have been studied using metallographic, microhardness, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray microprobe methods. Activation energies of phase growth and the relevant growth constants and chemical diffusion coefficients have been determined. The following expressions describe the growth kinetics of those phases: y 2 ⋎ =3×10 −9 t exp[(−41000±1000)/RT] y 2 ⋎ =8×10 −8 t exp[(−66 000±6000)/RT] y 2 ⋎ =4×10 −7 (t−t 0 ) exp[(−100 000±3000)/RT] Here t (s) is the time since the beginning of the phase growth, to the incubation period, R (J mol−1 K−1) the universal gas constant, T the absolute temperature, and y φ (m) the thickness of the pertinent phase layer φ.

The influence of helium or CO 2 blowing into the melt puddle during planar flow casting leads to different quenching rates of gas stabilized Fe 79 B 14 Si 7 amorphous ribbons. This has been demonstrated in thermal stability, in crystallization kinetics, and in magnetic properties by DSC, thermomagnetic gravimetry and magnetic measurements. Overheating of the melt has no substantial influence on all properties studied. Amorphous Fe 79 B 14 Si 7 ribbons with approved technological properties can be obtained using CO 2 blowing.

The glass-forming ability and the thermal stability of NiP alloys rapidly quenched from the melt has been studied mainly by Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Differential Thermal Analysis and X-ray diffraction. It has been shown that glass-forming occurs in the phosphorus concentration range 18–22 at.%, situated asymmetrically to the eutectic point (19 at.%).

The influence of substitution of silicon on the Curie point, onset of crystallization, magnetic induction and coercivity in two standard amorphous alloys, 2605 S2 and 2605 S [1], by chromium or molybdenum, has been studied. The optimum processing conditions and magnetic properties of as-cast ribbons were obtained at chromium concentrations of about 1–2at.%.

The glass-forming regions in the ternary systems NiCuP and NiCoP, obtained by rapid quenching from the melt, have been determined experimentally. The amorphous state has been verified by X-ray diffraction, by Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and by Differential Thermal Analysis. The glass-forming area is deeper in the NiCuP system. Metallographic investigations were also carried out.

The influence of sulphur, copper, manganese, phosphorus, carbon, aluminium, antimony and nickel additives on the crystallization and Curie points of amorphous Fe 80 B 14 Si 6 alloy was studied by scanning calorimetry and by thermogravimetry. The onset of crystallization in amorphous Fe14at.%B6at.%Si alloys without and with 0.38 at.% CU was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. A two-step crystallization reaction was observed. The copper addition decreases the onset temperature of the first step of crystallization but has essentially no effect on the second. Magnetic measurements corroborate the observed crystallization behaviour.

The directional crystallization of eutectic Al–Cu alloys with Fe additions under molten salts has been studied. According to Tiller's theory the specific interphase boundary energy σαβ was estimated for eutectic Al–Cu alloys with three concentrations of additive. Values of σαβ depend on Fe-concentration. Small additions of Fe modify the eutectic structure in two directions: a) enlargement of interlamellar spacings. b) formation of rod-like structure. Es wird die gerichtete Erstarrung eutektischer Al–Cu-Legierungen mit Eisenbeimengungen unter einer Salzschmelze untersucht. Mit Hilfe der Tillerschen Theorie wird die spezifische Grenzflachenenergie σαβ der Grenzen zwischen den beiden festen Phasen fur eutektische Al–Cu-Legierungen mit drei verschiedenen Eisenkonzentrationen bestimmt. Die ermittelten σαβ-Werte nehmen mit der Eisendotierung zu. Kleine Eisenzugaben andern das Eutektikum in zwei Richtungen: a) der Lamellenabstand nimmt mit zunehmender Eisenkonzentration zu, b) zunehmende Eisenkonzentration fuhrt zu einer Stabchenstrukturausbildung.

Growth shapes of benzophenone crystals and their kinetics were studied upon crystallization from the melt in a wide range of supercoolings, ΔT = 0–80 K. Within the whole ΔT range studied, benzophenone crystals were found to be faceted. The experimental kinetics agree well with the theory of layer-by-layer growth up to ΔT = 35 K. When ΔT is more than 35 K the experimental data do not agree with theory, which may be due to the lack of an adequate model to describe the processes of particle transition during crystallization and viscous flow.

The directional crystallization of eutectic AlNi alloys was studied. Variations of the growth rate caused significant change of the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of eutectic alloys. On the base of a Tiller's analysis involving the voluminal ratio of the two phases the interphase boundary energy σαβ is obtained. Es wird die gerichtete Erstarrung eutektischer AlNi Legierungen untersucht. Eine Anderung der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit andert wesentlich die Mikrostruktur und die mechanischen Eigenschaften der untersuchten eutektischen Legierungen. Mit Hilfe einer auf Grund der Tillerschen Analyse abgeleiteten Formel, in welcher das Volumenverhaltnis beider Phasen teilnimmt, wird die spezifische Oberflachenenergie an der Grenze beider festen Phasen ermittelt.

Es werden die Wachstumsformen kugelformiger Casiumeinkristalle aus der Dampfphase bei einem Ubersattigungsverhaltnis s von 1,02 bis 56 untersucht. Bei diesen Ubersattigungen treten an der Anfangswachstumsform nur die Flachen {110} auf. An den Endwachstumsformen erscheinen auch die Flachen {211}. {100}- und {111}-Flachen wurden nicht beobachtet. Die Ergebnisse werden vom Standpunkt der Theorie von STRANSKI und KAISCHEW diskutiert und gedeutet. [Russian Text Ignored]

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das Wachstum von Rubidium-Einkristallkugeln aus der Gasphase untersucht. Bei kleinen Ubersattigungen treten auf der Anfangswachstumsform die Flachen {110} und {100} auf; bei grosen Ubersattigungen erscheinen nur die Flachen {110}. Bei fortgeschrittenen Wachstumsformen erscheinen auch die Flachen {211} als schmale Streifen zwischen den Rhombendodekaederflachen; Temperaturschwankungen vergrosern die Ausmase der {211}-Flachen. Die Versuchsergebnisse werden vom Standpunkt der Theorie von Stranski und Kaischew diskutiert und gedeutet. The growth of rubidium monocrystalline spheres from the vapour phase is studied. Weak supersaturation leads to the formation of the faces {110} and {100} in the initial growth-habit, whereas strong supersaturation leads to the faces {110} only. The narrow faces {211} are observed only in the final growth-habit on the edges between the rhombic dodecahedral faces. Temperature variations increase the dimensions of the faces {211}. The experimental results are discussed on the basis of the theory of Stransky and Kaischew.

Es wird die Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit dunner runder Kristallplattchen aus der Gasphase nach einer der Burton-Cabrera-Frankschen und der Dittmar-Neumannschen Berechnung ahnlichen Methode mit Hilfe einer entsprechenden stationaren Diffusionsaufgabe berechnet. Dabei wird angenommen, das nur die Seitenflachen des Plattchens wachsen; hingegen dienen die „Basisflachen” nur als Zubringergebiet von Substanz durch Oberflachendiffusion. Fur den Fall einer eventuellen experimentellen Uberprufung werden Naherungsformeln fur die Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit bei grosen und kleinen Plattchenhalbmessern angefuhrt. [Russian Text Ignored]

Es werden Rubidiumwhisker durch Kondensation aus der Gasphase gezuchtet und ihre Wachstumskinetik untersucht. Bei kleinen Nadellangen wird eine exponentielle Zeitabhangigkeit der Nadellange beobachtet, die bei groseren Langen in eine lineare ubergeht. Die nach der Theorie von DITTMAR und NEUMANN berechneten Nadelhalbmesser sind von der Grosenordnung von 10−5 cm; fur den mittleren Diffusionsweg im adsorbierten Zustand ergibt sich der Wert 72 ± 3 μm. Bei kleinen Langen wird eine exponentielle Verdampfung beobachtet. Es wird experimentell eine Thomson-Gibbsche Dampfdruckerhohung des Whisker festgestellt. [Russian Text Ignored].

Es werden die chemischen Diffusionskoeffizienten bei Entzinkung von Messing mit Zinkkonzentrationen 5,6; 11,0; 17,0 und 21,1 Gewichtprozent bei 795°, 876°, 950°, 1021° und 1078°K mit Hilfe eines Hitachi-Rontgenmikroanalysators bestimmt. Aus der Temperaturabhangigkeit der chemischen Diffusionskoeffizienten ergibt sich fur die Aktivierungsenergie der Diffusion der Wert 22.3 kcal · mol−1. Es wird gezeigt, das die Entzinkungsgeschwindigkeit im Vakuum und im indifferenten Gasstrom von der Volumendiffusion des Zinks begrenzt wird, wobei die im Vakuum und im Gasstrom bestimmten Diffusionskoeffizienten zusammenfallen.
