Small steam-driven volcanic explosions are common at volcanoes worldwide but are rarely documented or monitored; therefore, these events still put residents and tourists at risk every year. Steam-driven explosions also occur frequently (once every 2–5 years on average) at Lascar volcano, Chile, where they are often spontaneous and lack any identifiable precursor activity. Here, for the first time at Lascar, we describe the processes culminating in such a sudden volcanic explosion that occurred on 30 October 2015, which was thoroughly monitored by cameras, a seismic network, and gas and temperature sensors. Prior to the eruption, we retrospectively identified unrest manifesting as a gradual increase in the number of long-period (LP) seismic events in 2014, indicating an enhanced level of activity at the volcano. Additionally, sulfur dioxide (SO2) flux and thermal anomalies were detected before the eruption. Then, our weather station reported a precipitation event, followed by an increase in steaming and a sudden volcanic explosion at Lascar. The multidisciplinary data exhibited short-term variations associated with the explosion, including (1) an abrupt eruption onset that was seismically identified in the 1–10 Hz frequency band, (2) the detection of a 1.7 km high white-gray eruption column in camera images, and (3) a pronounced spike in SO2 emission rates reaching 55 kg s−1 during the main pulse of the eruption as measured by a mini-differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) scanner. Continuous carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature measurements conducted at a fumarole on the southern rim of the Lascar crater revealed a pronounced change in the trend of the relationship between the CO2 mixing ratio and the gas outlet temperature; we speculate that this change was associated with the prior precipitation event. An increased thermal anomaly inside the active crater as observed in Sentinel-2 images and drone overflights performed after the steam-driven explosion revealed the presence of a ∼50 m long fracture truncating the floor of the active crater, which coincides well with the location of the thermal anomaly. This study presents the chronology of events culminating in a steam-driven explosion but also demonstrates that phreatic explosions are difficult to predict, even if the volcano is thoroughly monitored; these findings emphasize why ascending to the summits of Lascar and similar volcanoes is hazardous, particularly after considerable precipitation.

Long-term measurements of volcanic gas emissions conducted during the last decade suggest that under certain conditions the magnitude or chemical composition of volcanic emissions exhibits periodic variations with a period of about 2 weeks. A possible cause of such a periodicity can be attributed to the Earth tidal potential. The phenomenology of such a link has been debated for long, but no quantitative model has yet been proposed. The aim of this paper is to elucidate whether a causal link between tidal forcing and variations in volcanic degassing can be traced analytically. We model the response of a simplified magmatic system to the local tidal gravity variations and derive a periodical vertical magma displacement in the conduit with an amplitude of 0.1–1 m, depending on the geometry and physical state of the magmatic system. We find that while the tide-induced vertical magma displacement presumably has no significant direct effect on the volatile solubility, the differential magma flow across the radial conduit profile may result in a significant increase in the bubble coalescence rate at a depth of several kilometres by up to several multiples of 10 %. Because bubble coalescence facilitates separation of gas from magma and thus enhances volatile degassing, we argue that the derived tidal variation may propagate to a manifestation of varying volcanic degassing behaviour. The presented model provides a first basic framework which establishes an analytical understanding of the link between the Earth tides and volcanic degassing.

We evaluated NOVAC (Network for Observation of Volcanic and Atmospheric Change) gas emission data from the 2015 eruption of the Cotopaxi volcano (Ecuador) for BrO∕SO2 molar ratios. The BrO∕SO2 molar ratios were very small prior to the phreatomagmatic explosions in August 2015, significantly higher after the explosions, and continuously increasing until the end of the unrest period in December 2015. These observations together with similar findings in previous studies at other volcanoes (Mt. Etna, Nevado del Ruiz, Tungurahua) suggest a possible link between a drop in BrO∕SO2 and a future explosion. In addition, the observed relatively high BrO∕SO2 molar ratios after December 2015 imply that bromine degassed predominately after sulfur from the magmatic melt. Furthermore, statistical analysis of the data revealed a conspicuous periodic pattern with a periodicity of about 2 weeks in a 3-month time series. While the time series is too short to rule out a chance recurrence of transient geological or meteorological events as a possible origin for the periodic signal, we nevertheless took this observation as a motivation to examine the influence of natural forcings with periodicities of around 2 weeks on volcanic gas emissions. One strong aspirant with such a periodicity are the Earth tides, which are thus central in this study. We present the BrO∕SO2 data, analyse the reliability of the periodic signal, discuss a possible meteorological or eruption-induced origin of this signal, and compare the signal with the theoretical ground surface displacement pattern caused by the Earth tides. Our central result is the observation of a significant correlation between the BrO∕SO2 molar ratios with the north–south and vertical components of the calculated tide-induced surface displacement with correlation coefficients of 47 and 36 %, respectively. From all other investigated parameters, only the correlation between the BrO∕SO2 molar ratios and the relative humidity in the local atmosphere resulted in a comparable correlation coefficient of about 33 %.

To evaluate the promising advantages of massively parallel sequencing (MPS) in our casework, we analysed a total of 33 Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) with traditional capillary electrophoresis (CE) and 25 Y-STRs using the newer MPS technology. We studied the outcome of both technologies in 64 father-son pairs using stock and custom-designed kits. Current MPS technology confirmed the 13 mutational events observed with CE and improved our understanding of the complex nature of STR mutations. We present results from an inter-laboratory massively parallel sequencing (MPS) study in the framework of the SeqForSTRs project to evaluate forensically relevant parameters, such as performance, concordance, and sensitivity, using a standardized sequencing library including reference material, mixtures, and ancient DNA samples. The standardized library was prepared using the ForenSeq DNA Signature Prep Kit (primer mix A). The library was shared between eight European laboratories located in Austria, France, Germany, The Netherlands, and Sweden to perform MPS on their particular MiSeq FGx sequencers. Despite variation in performance between sequencing runs, all laboratories obtained quality metrics that fell within the manufacturer's recommended ranges. Furthermore, differences in locus coverage did not inevitably adversely affect heterozygous balance. Inter-laboratory concordance showed 100% concordant genotypes for the included autosomal and Y-STRs, and still, X-STR concordance exceeded 83%. The exclusive reasons for X-STR discordances were drop-outs at DXS10103. Sensitivity experiments demonstrated that correct allele calling varied between sequencing instruments in particular for lower DNA amounts (≤ 125 pg). The analysis of compromised DNA samples showed the drop-out of one sample (FA10013B01A) while for the remaining three degraded DNA samples MPS was able to successfully type ≥ 87% of all aSTRs, ≥ 78% of all Y-STRs, ≥ 68% of all X-STRs, and ≥ 92% of all iSNPs demonstrating that MPS is a promising tool for human identity testing, which in return, has to undergo rigorous in-house validation before it can be implemented into forensic routine casework.

Objectives: To identify the perceptions of mothers and fathers of newborns admitted to NICUs regarding the role of neonatal nurses in the provision of family-centered care and how neonatal nurses were able to interpret and meet parents' needs., Data Sources: We conducted literature searches in the CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Dissertations and Theses Global, and Maternity and Infant Care databases., Study Selection: Articles on qualitative and quantitative studies were selected if they were published in English from 2009 to 2018; they were set in countries with similar health care resources in Australasia, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and the United States; and the data were collected from parents. We identified 31 studies for analysis., Data Extraction: We used the thematic analysis method of Braun and Clarke to extract data elements that were grouped and coded into themes and subthemes., Data Synthesis: Through ongoing iterative analysis, we generated six themes from the 18 subthemes that in combination presented the experiences of parents in the context of family-centered care provided by neonatal nurses: Process of Becoming a Parent, Neonatal NursesSupportingParents, Infant Safety, Communication, Barriers to Parenting, and Parenting Inhibited by Neonatal Nurses., Conclusion: The six themes reflected the contribution made by neonatal nurses to family-centered care in the NICU. Lactation and breast milk can hold great value and meaning for grieving mothers who have experienced a recent death of an infant. Donation to a human milk bank (HMB) as an alternative to discarding breast milk is one means of respecting the value of breast milk. There is little research, national policy discussion, or organizational representation in Australia on the subject of breast milk donation after infant death. On 29 November 2013 the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, Australia hosted Australia's first National Stakeholder Meeting (NSM) on the topic of milk donation after neonatal death. The NSM drew together representatives from Australian HMBs, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) currently using donor human milk, and Australia's chief NICU parent support organization. The NSM was video-recorded and transcribed, and analyzed thematically by researchers. This article reports the seven dominant themes discussed by stakeholders during the NSM: the spectrum of women's lactation and donation experiences after infant death; the roles of the HMB and NICU in meeting the needs of the bereaved donor; how bereaved mothers' lactation autonomy may interface with a HMB's donation guidelines; how milk donation may be discussed with bereaved mothers; the variation between four categories of milk donation after neonatal death; the impact of limited resources and few HMBs on providing donation programs for bereaved mothers in Australia. This article provides evidence from researchers and practitioners that can assist HMB staff in refining their bank's policy on milk donation after infant death, and provides national policy makers with key considerations to support lactation, human milk banking, and bereavement services nation-wide.

Purpose: This study aims to detect differences in outcomes for very preterm infants after the introduction of developmental care in a neonatal nursery, and to evaluate the effect of developmental care on parental well-being., Design and Methods: Prospective before and after cohort study of very preterm babies, with education for all staff between cohorts., Results: No significant differences were found between cohorts for short-term outcomes for babies or parental anxiety levels or depression. All infants scored within normal temperament ranges at 4 months., Practice Implications: Developmental care is a safe practice model. The interdisciplinary study facilitated professional development and increased the knowledge of nurses.

Aim: This paper reports an audit of the effect on admission temperatures of using occlusive polyethylene wrap applied immediately after the birth of extremely premature infants., Background: Use of occlusive polyethylene wrap during the early postnatal management of the premature infant reduces evaporative and convective heat loss., Method: Retrospective pre-intervention audit was carried out, followed by the introduction of occlusive polyethylene wrap for thermal management during resuscitation and early stabilization. Prospective post-intervention audit was then performed. The pre-intervention (control) group infants were immediately dried with prewarmed towels and resuscitated under radiant heat. Infants in the intervention group were managed under radiant heat, were not dried but were immediately enclosed in an occlusive polyethylene wrap., Results: The demographic characteristics of the two groups were comparable. Use of occlusive polyethylene wrap resulted in higher admission temperatures for infants less than 27 weeks gestation (z=108.50, P<0.01). There was no statistically significant improvement in admission temperatures for 27-29 week infants. The rate of hypothermia on admission (<35.6 degrees C per axilla) was lower in the intervention group (chi(2)=5.12, d.f.=1, P=0.02), but more infants recorded temperatures exceeding 37.2 degrees C during the first 12 hours (chi(2)=23.45, d.f.=1, P<0.01). There were no other adverse effects noted., Conclusion: Use of occlusive polyethylene wrap improved admission temperatures for infants less than 27 weeks gestation. This intervention is easy to implement and does not interfere with resuscitation. However, removal of the wrap should be considered following admission to a closed care system in the neonatal intensive care unit because, in the intervention group, hyperthermia in the first 12 hours was a potential side effect.

Every laboratory needs personnel who work 24 hours a day 7 days a week, are efficient, obedient, capable of showing initiative, insightful and affable. Our experience of laboratory workers tells us that there is an immense way to go to achieve these goals. Having tired of the normal, Darwinian approach, a project has been initiated to achieve these ends through genetic technologies.

Objective: To compare the effect of two volumes of enteral feeds on postnatal growth in infants born before 30 weeks gestation., Methodology: Fifty-four infants, less than 30 weeks gestational age, who reached full enteral feeds were randomized to remain on 150 mL/kg per day (150 group) or increase to 200 mL/kg per day (200 group). The primary outcome measure was growth at 35 weeks corrected gestational age (CGA)., Results: There were no statistically significant differences in demographic or clinical parameters between the study groups at commencement of the study, although there was a trend for infants in the 150 group to be lighter (895 g vs 1020 g, P = 0.27). Milk intakes were increased in 43% of the infants in the 150 group, whereas 54% of the infants in the 200 group required reduced intakes. Infants in the 200 group had greater daily weight gains (16.7 g/kg per day vs 15.2 g/kg per day, P = 0.047) and at 35 weeks CGA were heavier (2020 g vs 1885 g, P = 0.014) and had a greater arm fat area (282 mm2 vs 218 mm2, P = 0.009). There was no difference in length or head circumference at 35 weeks CGA, and no difference in any growth parameter at 1 year of age. Morbidity was not different between the groups., Conclusions: The individual milk volume requirements for adequate weight gain without significant adverse effects vary between 150 and 200 mL/kg per day in extremely premature infants. For many infants in both groups, the assigned target volume was not appropriate. Increased milk intakes (and therefore higher caloric and mineral intakes) are associated with increased daily weight gains and a greater weight at 35 weeks CGA. The weight gain may be due to an increase in fat deposition.
