1. A novel pathway of levodopa metabolism by commensal Bifidobacteria

Abstract: Abstract The gold-standard treatment for Parkinson’s disease is levodopa (L-DOPA), which is taken orally and absorbed intestinally. L-DOPA must reach the brain intact to exert its clinical effect; peripheral metabolism by host and microbial enzymes is a clinical management issue. The gut microbiota is altered in PD, with one consistent and unexplained observation being an increase in Bifidobacterium abundance among patients. Recently, certain Bifidobacterium species were shown to have the ability to metabolize L-tyrosine, an L-DOPA structural analog. Using both clinical cohort data and in vitro experimentation, we investigated the potential for commensal Bifidobacteria to metabolize this drug. In PD patients, Bifidobacterium abundance was positively correlated with L-DOPA dose and negatively with serum tyrosine concentration. In vitro experiments revealed that certain species, including B. bifidum, B. breve, and B. longum, were able to metabolize this drug via deamination followed by reduction to the compound 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl lactic acid (DHPLA) using existing tyrosine-metabolising genes. DHPLA appears to be a waste product generated during regeneration of NAD +. This metabolism occurs at low levels in rich medium, but is significantly upregulated in nutrient-limited minimal medium. Discovery of this novel metabolism of L-DOPA to DHPLA by a common commensal may help inform medication management in PD.

Abstract: Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Abstract: Abstract The search for neutrino events in correlation with 42 most intense fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been performed using the Borexino dataset from 05/2007 to 06/2021. We have searched for signals with visible energies above 250 keV within a time window of $$\pm \, 1000$$ ± 1000 s corresponding to detection time of a particular FRB. We also applied an alternative approach based on searching for specific shapes of neutrino-electron scattering spectra in the full exposure data of the Borexino detector. In particular, two incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the monoenergetic line and the spectrum expected from supernovae. The same spectra were considered for electron antineutrinos detected through inverse beta-decay reaction. No statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on FRB-associated neutrino fluences of all flavors have been obtained in the 0.5–50 MeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract: Abstract Cosmogenic radio-nuclei are an important source of background for low-energy neutrino experiments. In Borexino, cosmogenic $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays outnumber solar pep and CNO neutrino events by about ten to one. In order to extract the flux of these two neutrino species, a highly efficient identification of this background is mandatory. We present here the details of the most consolidated strategy, used throughout Borexino solar neutrino measurements. It hinges upon finding the space-time correlations between $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays, the preceding parent muons and the accompanying neutrons. This article describes the working principles and evaluates the performance of this Three-Fold Coincidence (TFC) technique in its two current implementations: a hard-cut and a likelihood-based approach. Both show stable performances throughout Borexino Phases II (2012–2016) and III (2016–2020) data sets, with a $$^{11}$$ 11 C tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90$$ ∼ 90 % and $$\sim $$ ∼ 63–66 % of the exposure surviving the tagging. We present also a novel technique that targets specifically $$^{11}$$ 11 C produced in high-multiplicity during major spallation events. Such $$^{11}$$ 11 C appear as a burst of events, whose space-time correlation can be exploited. Burst identification can be combined with the TFC to obtain about the same tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90\%$$ ∼ 90 % but with a higher fraction of the exposure surviving, in the range of $$\sim $$ ∼ 66–68 %.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e. comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $${5 \times 10^{-3}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 \lesssim \varDelta m^2_{41} \lesssim {3 \times 10^{-1}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 $$ 5 × 10 - 3 eV 2 ≲ Δ m 41 2 ≲ 3 × 10 - 1 eV 2 for mixing angles down to $$\sin ^2 2\theta _{14} \gtrsim {0.02} $$ sin 2 2 θ 14 ≳ 0.02 . No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $$\theta _{13} $$ θ 13 is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $$\theta _{14} $$ θ 14 as a function of $$ \varDelta m^2_{41} $$ Δ m 41 2 are obtained.

Abstract: Abstract A θ 13 oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ 13 and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν ¯ e $$ {\overline{\nu}}_e $$ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and 9Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin2(2θ 13) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ 13 to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation.

Abstract: Abstract The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-ν e survival probability P ee (E), and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI’s) which modify the chiral couplings and P ee (E). In this paper, we search for such NSI’s, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the ν e e and ν τ e couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI’s are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of sin2 θ W is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments .

Abstract: Abstract The yields and production rates of the radioisotopes 9Li and 8He created by cosmic muon spallation on 12C, have been measured by the two detectors of the Double Chooz experiment. The identical detectors are located at separate sites and depths, which means that they are subject to different muon spectra. The near (far) detector has an overburden of ∼120 m.w.e. (∼300 m.w.e.) corresponding to a mean muon energy of 32.1 ± 2.0 GeV (63.7 ± 5.5 GeV). Comparing the data to a detailed simulation of the 9Li and 8He decays, the contribution of the 8He radioisotope at both detectors is found to be compatible with zero. The observed 9Li yields in the near and far detectors are 5.51 ± 0.51 and 7.90 ± 0.51, respectively, in units of 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. The shallow overburdens of the near and far detectors give a unique insight when combined with measurements by KamLAND and Borexino to give the first multi-experiment, data driven relationship between the 9Li yield and the mean muon energy according to the power law Y = Y 0 E μ / 1 GeV α ¯ $$ Y = {Y}_0{\left(\left\langle {E}_{\mu}\right\rangle /1\ GeV\right)}^{\overline{\alpha}} $$ , giving α ¯ = 0.72 ± 0.06 $$ \overline{\alpha} = 0.72 \pm 0.06 $$ and Y 0 = (0.43 ± 0.11) × 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. This relationship gives future liquid scintillator based experiments the ability to predict their cosmogenic 9Li background rates.

Abstract: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation hyperinflates the lungs and reduces diaphragmatic motion. We hypothesized that CPAP could be safely combined with deep inspiratory breath hold (CPAP-DIBH) during lung stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT).Patients with stage-1 lung cancer or lung metastasis treated with CPAP-DIBH SBRT between 3/2017-5/2021 were analyzed retrospectively. Patient characteristics, treatment parameters, duration of breath holds in all sessions and tolerance to CPAP-DIBH were recorded. Local control (LC) was assessed from CT or PET-CT imaging. The distances between the tumor and mediastinal organs at risk (OAR) in centrally located tumors using either free breathing (FB) or CPAP-DIBH were compared. Toxicity was graded retrospectively.Forty-five patients with 71 lesions were treated with CPAP-DIBH SBRT. Indications for CPAP-DIBH were prior radiation (35/71, 65%), lower lobe location (34/71, 48%), multiple lesions (26/71, 36.6%) and proximity to mediastinal OAR (7/71, 10%). Patient characteristics were: F:M 43%: 57%; mean gross tumor volume 4.5cmCPAP-DIBH assisted lung SBRT was tolerated well and was associated with minimal toxicity and favorable LC. This technique may be considered when treating multiple lung lesions, lesions located in the lower lobes or adjacent to mediastinal OAR.

Dies führt zu diagnostischen sowie therapeutischen Unklarheiten. In Pubmed wurde daher nach systematischen Reviews gesucht, die sich mit den Folgen einer SARS-CoV-2-Infektion befassten. Die zugrunde liegenden Definitionen sowie zeitlichen Einschlusskriterien wurden extrahiert. 16 systematische Reviews wurden eingeschlossen, davon 11 mit einer Definition des PCS. In 58 % der analysierten Einzelstudien wurden Patienten mit einer Symptomatik > 12 Wochen und damit entsprechend der Definition des PCS inkludiert. Fazit: Eine weitere Präzisierung der Definition des PCS ist notwendig, um Diagnostik und eine multimodale Behandlung zu erleichtern und die knappen therapeutischen Ressourcen entsprechend zu nutzen.

11. Use and effectiveness of remdesivir for the treatment of patients with covid-19 using data from the Lean European Open Survey on SARS-CoV-2 infected patients (LEOSS): a multicentre cohort study

Abstract: Objectives The use of remdesivir (RDV) as the first drug approved for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains controversial. Based on the Lean European Open Survey on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected patients (LEOSS), we aim to contribute timing-focused complementary real-world insights to its evaluation. Methods SARS-CoV-2 infected patients between January 2020 and December 2021 treated with RDV were matched 1:1 to controls considering sociodemographics, comorbidities and clinical status. Multiple imputations were used to account for missing data. Effects on fatal outcome were estimated using uni- and multivariable Cox regression models. Results We included 9,687 patients. For those starting RDV administration in the complicated phase, Cox regression for fatal outcome showed an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 0.59 (95%CI 0.41–0.83). Positive trends could be obtained for further scenarios: an aHR of 0.51 (95%CI 0.16–1.68) when RDV was initiated in uncomplicated and of 0.76 (95% CI 0.55–1.04) in a critical phase of disease. Patients receiving RDV with concomitant steroids exhibited a further reduction in aHR in both, the complicated (aHR 0.50, 95%CI 0.29–0.88) and critical phase (aHR 0.63, 95%CI 0.39–1.02). Conclusion Our study results elucidate that RDV use, in particular when initiated in the complicated phase and accompanied by steroids is associated with improved mortality. However, given the limitations of non-randomized trials in estimating the magnitude of the benefit of an intervention, further randomized trials focusing on the timing of therapy initiation seem warranted.

Abstract: Background Numerous predictive clinical scores with varying discriminatory performance have been developed in the context of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. To support clinical application, we test the transferability of the frequently applied 4C mortality score (4C score) to the German prospective Cross-Sectoral Platform (SUEP) of the National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON) compared to the non COVID-19 specific quick sequential organ failure assessment score (qSOFA). Our project aims to externally validate these two scores, stratified for the most prevalent variants of concerns (VOCs) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Germany. Methods A total of 685 adults with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-detected SARS-CoV-2 infection were included from NAPKON-SUEP. Patients were recruited from 11/2020 to 03/2022 at 34 university and non-university hospitals across Germany. Missing values were complemented using multiple imputation. Predictive performance for in-hospital mortality at day of baseline visit was determined by area under the curve (AUC) with 95%-confidence interval (CI) stratified by VOCs of SARS-CoV-2 (alpha, delta, omicron) (Figure 1). Figure 1:Study flow chart with inclusion criteria and methodological workflow. Results Preliminary results suggest a high predictive performance of the 4C score for in-hospital mortality (Table 1). This applies for the overall cohort (AUC 0.813 (95%CI 0.738-0.888)) as well as the VOC-strata (alpha: AUC 0.859 (95%CI 0.748-0.970); delta: AUC 0.769 (95%CI 0.657-0.882); omicron: AUC 0.866 (95%CI 0.724-1.000)). The overall mortality rates across the defined 4C score risk groups are 0.3% (low), 3.2% (intermediate), 11.6% (high), and 49.5% (very high). The 4C score performs significantly better than the qSOFA (Chi2-test: p=0.001) and the qSOFA does not seem to be a suitable tool in this context. Conclusion Despite its development in the early phase of the pandemic and improved treatment, external validation of the 4C score in NAPKON-SUEP indicates a high predictive performance for in-hospital mortality across all VOCs. However, since the qSOFA was not specifically designed for this predictive issue, it shows low discriminatory performance, as in other validation studies. Any interpretations regarding the omicron stratum are limited due to the sample size. Abstract: The German government initiated the Network University Medicine (NUM) in early 2020 to improve national research activities on the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. To this end, 36 German Academic Medical Centers started to collaborate on 13 projects, with the largest being the National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON). The NAPKON’s goal is creating the most comprehensive Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) cohort in Germany. Within NAPKON, adult and pediatric patients are observed in three complementary cohort platforms (Cross-Sectoral, High-Resolution and Population-Based) from the initial infection until up to three years of follow-up. Study procedures comprise comprehensive clinical and imaging diagnostics, quality-of-life assessment, patient-reported outcomes and biosampling. The three cohort platforms build on four infrastructure core units (Interaction, Biosampling, Epidemiology, and Integration) and collaborations with NUM projects. Key components of the data capture, regulatory, and data privacy are based on the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research. By April 01, 2022, 34 university and 40 non-university hospitals have enrolled 5298 patients with local data quality reviews performed on 4727 (89%). 47% were female, the median age was 52 (IQR 36–62-) and 50 pediatric cases were included. 44% of patients were hospitalized, 15% admitted to an intensive care unit, and 12% of patients deceased while enrolled. 8845 visits with biosampling in 4349 patients were conducted by April 03, 2022. Abstract: Michael is a student with a learning disability who just graduated from high school. He worked really hard to keep his grades up and was thrilled to be accepted to a large university about 150 miles from his hometown. Michael plans to major in graphic design. After a summer of working and spending time with friends and family, Michael is excited to move into the dorm. His parents help him move in and wish him well. He meets his roommate, but they don't have much in common. Within the first few weeks of class, Michael and his roommate are barely speaking because they argue about the type of music and TV in the room and when to have people in the room. Michael decides to go to the local mall for something to do ... only he takes the wrong bus and never gets there. He then decides he can manage without leaving campus—it will be much easier. Michael enjoys his psychology class, but he is really struggling with his English 101 class. He failed his first paper. He isn't sure what to do on the next paper, but he decided he will just hope for the best. Michael finds himself thinking about how much easier it would be if he just moved back home and worked at his uncle's restaurant.

Abstract: Renewable fuels are necessary energy sources as bio-based combustible fuels can be utilized in existing infrastructure while lowering the dependence on petrochemical based fuels. Current bio-fuels are predominantly crop-based which require tillable land, fertilizer, chemicals, irrigation, and fuel to cultivate the biomass feedstock. This study investigated the hydrothermal conversion of underutilized waste streams for biomass feedstock. This work blended municipal sewage sludge solids, poultry dissolved air flotation solids, and used cooking oil to form a waste slurry that was thermally converted to renewable fuel products. Blended waste processing provides flexibility and robustness in the future of bio-based fuels, and the authors believe this is the first documented hydrothermal processing of this specific blended waste. The waste slurry was heated under subcritical hydrothermal conditions, where solids were separated, and then heated in a second pressurized reaction to complete the thermal conversion process of wastes to recoverable products. Prior to processing, the blended waste slurry contained 8,490 kJ/kg (3,650 BTU/lb). Following processing, the recovered gas products contained 38,747 kJ/kg (16,658 BTU/lb) and 42% methane. The recovered renewable oil contained 40,468 kJ/kg (17,398 BTU/lb) and 0.012% ash. The effluent produced water was appraised for nutrient content and was found to contain 1,689 mg/L of nitrogen, which has potential as a liquid fertilizer product. The produced gas fuel, produced liquid fuel, solid char, and produced nutrient laden water were determined to be potential marketable products.

Abstract: A θ oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν¯ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin(2θ) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation. Abstract: We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e.\ comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $5 \cdot 10^{-3} $ eV$^2 \lesssim \Delta m^2_{41} \lesssim 3\cdot 10^{-1} $ eV$^2$ for mixing angles down to $\sin^2 2\theta_{14} \gtrsim 0.02$. No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $\theta_{13} $ is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $\theta_{14} $ as function of $ \Delta m^2_{41} $ are obtained., Comment: accepted for publication by EPJC

Abstract: BackgroundThe MIND diet has been linked with prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline but has not been fully assessed in the context of Parkinson’s disease (PD).ObjectiveTo determine whether MIND diet adherence is associated with the age of Parkinson’s disease onset in a manner superior to that of the Mediterranean diet.MethodsFood Frequency Questionnaires from 167 participants with PD and 119 controls were scored for MIND and two versions of Mediterranean diet adherence. Scores were compared between sex and disease subgroups, and PD diet adherence was correlated with age of onset using univariate and multivariate linear models.ResultsThe female subgroup adhered more closely to the MIND diet than the males, and diet scores were not modified by disease status. Later age of onset correlated most strongly with MIND diet adherence in the female subgroup, corresponding to differences of up to 17.4 years (pConclusionsThis cross-sectional study finds a strong correlation of age of onset of PD with dietary habits, suggesting that nutritional strategies may be an effective tool to delay PD onset. Further studies may help to elucidate potential nutrition-related sex-specific pathophysiological mechanisms and differential prevalence rates in PD.

Abstract: We report on an improved measurement of the $^8$B solar neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Neutrinos are detected via their elastic scattering on electrons in a large volume of liquid scintillator. The measured rate of scattered electrons above 3 MeV of energy is $0.223\substack{+0.015 \\ -0.016}\,(stat)\,\substack{+0.006 \\ -0.006}\,(syst)$ cpd/100 t, which corresponds to an observed solar neutrino flux assuming no neutrino flavor conversion of $\Phi\substack{\rm ES \\ ^8\rm B}=2.57\substack{+0.17 \\ -0.18}(stat)\substack{+0.07\\ -0.07}(syst)\times$10$^6$ cm$^{-2}\,$s$^{-1}$. This measurement exploits the active volume of the detector in almost its entirety for the first time, and takes advantage of a reduced radioactive background following the 2011 scintillator purification campaign and of novel analysis tools providing a more precise modeling of the background. Additionally, we set a new limit on the interaction rate of solar $hep$ neutrinos, searched via their elastic scattering on electrons as well as their neutral current-mediated inelastic scattering on carbon, $^{12}$C($\nu,\nu'$)$^{12}$C* ($E_{\gamma}$= 15.1 MeV).

Abstract: The Borexino detector at Gran Sasso has now accumulated over ten years of continuous data which represent a magnificent opportunity to study the cosmic muon flux at a deep underground location. We present here a precision measurement of the flux and of the expected seasonal modulation. We present the correlation with the atmospheric temperature variations from global atmospheric models. We measure the correlation parameters and infer the kaon-to-pion ratio in the production of cosmic muons from high energy primaries. We also find evidence of a long term modulation that is not present in the atmospheric data and we investigate a possible positive correlation with the solar activity. Finally we observe a seasonal modulation of the production rate of cosmogenic neutrons that is in phase with the muon modulation but shows a surprisingly larger amplitude.

Abstract: The Borexino liquid scintillator neutrino observatory has a unique capability to perform high-precision solar neutrino observations thanks to its exceptional radiopurity and good energy resolution (5% at 1 MeV). A comprehensive study of the pp-chain neutrinos was presented that includes the direct measurements of 7Be, pp and pep neutrino fluxes with the highest precision ever achieved (down to 2.8% in the 7Be component), the 8B with the lowest energy threshold, the best limit on CNO neutrinos and the first Borexino limit on hep neutrinos. These results are important to validate the MSW-LMA oscillation paradigm across the full solar energy range and to exclude possible Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSIs). In particular the effects of neutrino-flavor-diagonal Neutral-Current (NC) interactions that modify the vee and vτe couplings while preserving their chiral and flavor structures, have been investigated. At detection, the shape of the electron-recoil spectrum is affected by changes in the vee and vτe couplings, quantified by the parameters ε e L / R and ε τ L / R . New bounds to all four parameters were obtained, quite stringent compared to the global ones. In particular, the best constraint to-date on ε e L was achieved. A comprehensive summary of all the recent results on solar neutrinos from Borexino is reported in the present paper.

Abstract: Borexino is a 280-ton liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and is one of the two detectors that has measured geoneutrinos so far. The unprecedented radio-purity of the scintillator, the shielding with highly purified water, and the placement of the detector at a 3800 m w.e. depth have resulted in very low background levels and has made Borexino an excellent apparatus for geoneutrino measurements. The new update of the Borexino geoneutrino measurement, using the data obtained from December 2007 to April 2019, has been presented. Enhanced analysis techniques, adopted in this measurement, have been also presented (poster presentation #39 by S. Kumaran). The updated statistics and the new elaborate analysis have led to more than a factor two increase in exposure ((1.12 ± 0.05) × 1032 protons × yr) when compared to the latest Borexino result from 2015. The resulting geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU has − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision. The geological interpretations of this measurement have been discussed. In particular, the 99% C.L. observation of the mantle signal by exploiting the relatively well-known lithospheric contribution, the estimation of the radiogenic heat, as well as the comparison of these results to the predictions based on different geological models. The upper limits on the power of a hypothetical georeactor that might be present at different locations inside the Earth have been set.

Abstract: A thermal calorimetric apparatus was designed, built and calibrated for measuring the activity of the artificial 144 Ce —144 Pr antineutrino source. This measurement will be performed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, just before the source insertion in the tunnel under the Borexino detector and a precision better than 1% is required for a disappearance technique measurement in the SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillation with BoreXino) project. In this work the apparatus is described and the most important results from the calibration measurements are shown, where the final precision of few per thousand is demonstrated.

Enhanced analysis techniques, such as an increased fiducial volume, improved veto for cosmogenic backgrounds, extended energy and coincidence time windows, as well as a more efficient α/β particle discrimination have been adopted in this measurement. The updated statistics and these elaborate resulted in a geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU with − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision.

Abstract: Thanks to the progress of neutrino physics, today we are able of exploiting neutrinos as a tool to study astrophysical objects. The latter in turn serve as unique sources of elusive neutrinos, which fundamental properties are still to be understood. This contribution attempts to summarize the latest results obtained by measuring neutrinos emitted from the Sun and geoneutrinos produced in radioactive decays inside the Earth, with a particular focus on a recent discovery of the CNO-cycle solar neutrinos by Borexino. Comprehensive measurement of the pp-chain solar neutrinos and the first directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos by Borexino, the updated 8B solar neutrino results of Super-Kamiokande, as well as the latest Borexino and KamLAND geoneutrino measurements are also discussed.

Abstract: Borexino is a 280t liquid scintillator detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. Its main goal is the precision spectroscopy of solar neutrinos down to energies of 0.19 MeV and for this task it features an unprecedented radio-purity and a high scintillation light yield. The solar neutrinos are measured by the elastic scattering off electrons which induce isotropically emitted scintillation photons as well as a sub-dominant number of Cherenkov photons that are detected by photomulitplier tubes. Here we present the first detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos using their associated Cherenkov photons in a high light yield liquid scintillator detector. In Borexino electrons with E>0.16MeV produce Cherenkov photons, where the ratio of Cherenkov photons from the neutrino scattered electrons is estimated to be < 1% for all PMT hits, so a typical event by event direction reconstruction is not possible. Instead this analysis looks at the integrated signal of the PMT hits of all detected events by correlating the position of each hit PMT relative to the reconstructed position of the event and the well known position of the Sun. In this way it is possible to measure an angular distribution that shows the statistical contribution of Cherenkov photons from the solar neutrino recoil electrons. Using the Geant4-based Borexino Monte Carlo to produce the expected angular distribution for solar neutrinos and background we have measured 8643 − 2058 +2252 neutrino events out of 19904 total events for an energy region around the 7Be edge between 0.53 MeV and 0.74 MeV.

Abstract: The Borexino detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is a radiopure 280 ton liquid scintillator detector with a primary goal to measure low-energy solar neutrinos created in the core of the Sun. These neutrinos are a consequence of nuclear fusion reactions in the solar core where Hydrogen is burned into Helium and provide a direct probe of the energy production processes, namely the proton-proton (pp) chain and the Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen (CNO) cycle. The fusion of Hydrogen in the case of the CNO cycle, which is expected to contribute in the order of less than 1% to the total solar energy, is catalyzed by Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen directly depending on the abundances of these elements in the solar core. The measurement of CNO neutrinos is challenging due to the high spectral correlation with the decay electrons of the background isotope 210Bi and the pep solar neutrino signal. The experimental achievement of thermal stabilization of the Borexino detector after mid 2016, has opened the possibility to develop a method to constrain the 210Bi rate through its decay daughter and α emitter 210Po which can be identified in Borexino with an efficiency close to 100 percent on an event-by-event basis. Moreover, the flux of pep neutrinos can be constrained precisely through a global analysis of solar neutrino data which is independent of the dataset used for the CNO analysis. This conference contribution is dedicated to the first experimental evidence of neutrinos produced in the CNO fusion cycle in the Sun which is at the same time the dominant energy production mechanism in heavier stars compared to the Sun.

Abstract: We report on searches for neutrinos and antineutrinos from astrophysical sources performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) are detected in an organic liquid scintillator through the inverse $\beta$-decay reaction. In the present work we set model-independent upper limits in the energy range 1.8-16.8 MeV on neutrino fluxes from unknown sources that improve our previous results, on average, by a factor 2.5. Using the same data set, we first obtain experimental constraints on the diffuse supernova $\bar{\nu}_e$ fluxes in the previously unexplored region below 8 MeV. A search for $\bar{\nu}_e$ in the solar neutrino flux is also presented: the presence of $\bar{\nu}_e$ would be a manifestation of a non-zero anomalous magnetic moment of the neutrino, making possible its conversion to antineutrinos in the strong magnetic field of the Sun. We obtain a limit for a solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ flux of 384 cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ (90% C.L.), assuming an undistorted solar $^{8}$B neutrinos energy spectrum, that corresponds to a transition probability $p_{ \nu_e \rightarrow \bar\nu_{e}}$ 1.8 MeV. At lower energies, by investigating the spectral shape of elastic scattering events, we obtain a new limit on solar $^{7}$Be-$\nu_e$ conversion into $\bar{\nu}_e$ of $p_{ \nu_e \rightarrow \bar \nu_{e}}, Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, 73 references

Abstract: Borexino is running at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboraries, Italy since 2007. Its technical distinctive feature is the unprecedented ultralow background of the inner scintillating core, which is the foundation for the outstanding achievements accumulated by this experiment. In this contribution, after recalling the main features of the detector, the impressive solar data gathered so far by Borexino will be summarized. Special emphasis will be given to the illustration of the recent release of the fluxes as stemming from the simultaneous real time spectroscopy of the neutrinos from the entire $pp$ nuclear fusion chain in the Sun, opening with the remarkable 2.7% accuracy of the ⁷Be flux the era of precision measurements also in the realm of the sub-MeV solar neutrinos. Such results put Borexino in the unique situation of being the only detector able to perform solar neutrino spectroscopy over the entire solar spectrum; the counterpart of this peculiar status, in the flavor conversion interpretation of the solar neutrino data, is the capability of Borexino alone to perform the full validation across the solar energy range of the MSW-LMA paradigm. This contribution will be concluded with an account of the Borexino accomplishments in the geo-neutrino field, marked by the detection of the geo-neutrino signal with a significance as high as $5.9\sigma$.
