A.; Vince, O.; Waller, L.; Zaharieva, E.; Chatterjee, R., Blazars are active galactic nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets whose non-thermal radiation is extremely variable on various timescales1,2,3. This variability seems mostly random, although some quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), implying systematic processes, have been reported in blazars and other AGN. QPOs with timescales of days or hours are especially rare4 in AGN and their nature is highly debated, explained by emitting plasma moving helically inside the jet5, plasma instabilities6,7 or orbital motion in an accretion disc7,8. Here we report results of intense optical and γ-ray flux monitoring of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) during a dramatic outburst in 2020 (ref. 9). BL Lac, the prototype of a subclass of blazars10, is powered by a 1.7 × 108 MSun (ref. 11) black hole in an elliptical galaxy (distance = 313 megaparsecs (ref. 12)). Our observations show QPOs of optical flux and linear polarization, and γ-ray flux, with cycles as short as approximately 13 h during the highest state of the outburst. The QPO properties match the expectations of current-driven kink instabilities6 near a recollimation shock about 5 parsecs (pc) from the black hole in the wake of an apparent superluminal feature moving down the jet. The task of guidance of a spacecraft, returning from the Moon, to a given landing area, under an effect of “magnified” disturbing factors, is considered. The earlier developed terminal algorithm for control of the descent from a near-Earth orbit was substantially modified, as applied to skip trajectories, with two entries into Earth’s atmosphere, in order to meet the given restrictions on landing accuracy, load factor, and propellant consumption. The modified version of the algorithm includes the “separate” logic of adaptation to the real conditions of motion, with measuring the components of apparent acceleration. The reliability of results is confirmed by a large volume of statistical tests.

The results of multicolor photometric and polarization observations of the blazar 4C 38.41 (Q 1633+382) performed at St. Petersburg State University, the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Boston University, and Steward Observatory in 2006–2017 are analyzed. Separate variable sources responsible for the observed activity are distinguished, whose power-lawspectra and high degree of polarization confirm their synchrotron nature. The observed color variability of the object (redder when brighter) can be explained by an increase in the contribution to the total emission of a red component with variable flux and a constant relative spectral energy distribution. A close correlation between the optical and gamma-ray light curves is identified, suggesting the same location of the variable sources responsible for the radiation in these bands.

The problem of reentry vehicle control during its descent from a near-Earth orbit is considered under conditions of “enhanced” disturbances. The earlier developed terminal descent control algorithm is considerably improved to satisfy constraints on landing accuracy, load factor, and propellant consumption. A method for automatically shifting the deorbit point, adaptating to actual motion conditions, and modifying the reference bank function is proposed, which ensured the satisfaction of the specified constraints under action of an aggregate of enhanced disturbing factors.

We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We consider the problem of attitude control of a descent vehicle in the Earth’s atmosphere returning from the Moon. A stabilization algorithm with a deadband and the optimal parameters, obtained with the numerical method, provide adequate landing accuracy and an allowable load factor under the influence of a set of disturbances. Using the method of mathematical simulation, it is shown that the fuel consumption is reduced by ~30% in comparison with the initial stabilization parameters for the descent from a near-Earth orbit.

The algorithm of the two-point boundary problem is developed for choice the nominal deorbit point, from which a descent vehicle is enabled to land at a given place without a cross-range maneuver. The method is suggested and the example is given of constructing the initial deorbit region for landing at the Vostochny cosmodrome.

The object 4C 71.07 is a high-redshift blazar whose spectral energy distribution shows a prominent big blue bump and a strong Compton dominance. We present the results of a 2- yr multiwavelength campaign led by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) to study both the quasar core and the beamed jet of this source. The WEBT data are complemented by ultraviolet and X-ray data from Swift, and by γ-ray data by Fermi. The big blue bump is modelled by using optical and near-infrared mean spectra obtained during the campaign, together with optical and ultraviolet quasar templates. We give prescriptions to correct the source photometry in the various bands for the thermal contribution, in order to derive the non-thermal jet flux. The role of the intergalactic medium absorption is analysed in both the ultraviolet and X-ray bands.We provide opacity values to deabsorb ultraviolet data, and derive a best-guess value for the hydrogen column density of Nbest H = 6.3 × 10 cmthrough the analysis of X-ray spectra.We estimate the disc and jet bolometric luminosities, accretion rate, and black hole mass. Light curves do not show persistent correlations among flux changes at different frequencies. We study the polarimetric behaviour and find no correlation between polarization degree and flux, even when correcting for the dilution effect of the big blue bump. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. Context. The flat-spectrum radio quasar 4C +71.07 is a high-redshift (z = 2.172), γ-loud blazar whose optical emission is dominated by thermal radiation from the accretion disc. Aims. 4C +71.07 has been detected in outburst twice by the AGILE γ-ray satellite during the period from the end of October to mid-November 2015, when it reached a γ-ray flux of the order of F(E > 100 MeV)=(1.2 ± 0.3)×10 photons cm s and F(E > 100 MeV)=(3.1 ± 0.6)×10 photons cm s, respectively, allowing us to investigate the properties of the jet and the emission region. Methods. We investigated its spectral energy distribution by means of almost-simultaneous observations covering the cm, mm, near-infrared, optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and γ-ray energy bands obtained by the GASP-WEBT Consortium and the Swift, AGILE, and Fermi satellites. Results. The spectral energy distribution of the second γ-ray flare (whose energy coverage is more dense) can be modelled by means of a one-zone leptonic model, yielding a total jet power of about 4 × 10 erg s. Conclusions. During the most prominent γ-ray flaring period our model is consistent with a dissipation region within the broad-line region. Moreover, this class of high-redshift, flat-spectrum radio quasars with high-mass black holes might be good targets for future γ-ray satellites such as e-ASTROGAM. © ESO 2019., AGILE is an ASI space mission developed with programmatic support by INAF and INFN. The solution of the problem how to register fast neutrons in the presence of intense gamma radiation is required when solving such fundamental and applied problems as registration of the neutron and gamma background in underground low-background experiments (the low background detectors of the neutrino and dark matter); beam diagnostic at particle accelerators; radiation monitoring at nuclear facilities, nuclear medicine; environmental monitoring. To separate signals from neutrons and gamma quanta, scintillation detectors with organic scintillators are used. The best scintillators are organic crystals of stilbene and p-terphenyl. The efficiency of separating signals from neutrons and gamma quanta can be increased using various methods of digital signal processing of the pulse shapes of the registered signals. A parameter traditionally called the Figure of Merit (FOM) is used to compare these methods. The experimental setup consisted of a Pu-Be neutron source, a scintillation detector with organic crystal p-terphenyl, a Hamamatsu R6094 photomultiplier, a CAEN DT5730 Digitizer (500 MHz, 14bit), which store the shape of each pulse for the following digital processing. A new “method of normalized signals” was developed. Three variants of the new method of normalized signals are described, which give the following FOM values: 1.6, 1.7, and 2.1. The traditional method of signals separation on the same array of experimental data showed the efficiency FOM = 1.6. The new method of signal separation is used to register fast neutrons in the installation dedicated for the development of a compact neutron generator, which is necessary for the calibration of low-background detectors of neutrinos and dark matter particles.

Scintillation detectors with organic scintillators are widely used for fast neutrons detection in high gamma ray background. The peculiarity of this type of detector is that the pulse shape depends on the type of the detected particle. Traditionally, the Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) histogram is used to determine the number of detected neutrons. The PSD parameter is calculated from the shape of the detector pulse and assigned to each pulse. A typical PSD histogram contains two peaks corresponding to neutrons and gamma rays that overlap in the region between the peaks. With this approach, it is impossible to identify each individual signal in the area between the peaks. Therefore, it is not possible to calculate the overall signal identification coefficient. We have proposed a new method for the identification of neutrons and gamma quanta, which includes a combination of three signal separation algorithms: the traditional histogram PSD, the dependence of the area of signals on their amplitude, Tau histogram (tau means the fall constant of the detector pulses). This combination of three algorithms makes it possible to calculate the value of the signal identification coefficient. To test a new method for identifying neutrons and gamma quanta, we used a Pu-Be neutron source, a scintillation detector with a p-terphenyl crystal and a CAEN DT5730 Digitizer (14 bit, 500 MHz). When a scintillation detector registered neutron from a Pu-Be source, the signal identification coefficient was 91.6%. A new method for identifying signals from a scintillation detector is used to register neutrons at the light ion accelerator.

In this paper, we investigated the efficiency of several known and new methods of digital pulse shape discrimination for neutrons and gamma quanta. Experimental data were obtained on a setup consists of a Pu-Be neutron source, organic p-terphenyl scintillation detector and 14 bits, 500 MHz sampling rate flash-ADC with capability to store and upload to the host computer long waveforms for further analysis. A comparison is made in between the results of using traditional and new methods for calculating the signal separation efficiency of Figure of Merit (FOM). The best known from the literature value of the efficiency of neutron and gamma quanta discrimination for the Pu-Be source is FOM = 1.5. We obtained the separation efficiency FOM = 1.77 in the scintillation detector with the p-terphenyl crystal, by a new method. Note also that for the known liquid scintillator BC-501A FOM≈1. A new method of scintillation detector pulse shape discrimination from neutrons and gamma quanta is used to detect the neutron yield from compact neutron generator that is created on the basis of carbon nanotubes.

We report the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the emission-line object AS 386. For the first time, we found that it exhibits the B[e] phenomenon and fits the definition of an FS CMa type object. The optical spectrum shows the presence of a B-type star with the following properties: T_ eff = 11000+/-500 K, log L/L_sun = 3.7+/-0.3, a mass of 7+/-1 M_sun, and a distance D = 2.4+/-0.3 kpc from the Sun. We detected regular radial velocity variations of both absorption and emission lines with the following orbital parameters: P_orb = 131.27+/-0.09 days, semi-amplitude K_1 = 51.7+/-3.0 km/s, systemic radial velocity gamma = -31.8+/-2.6 km/s, and a mass function of f(m) = 1.9+/-0.3 M_sun. AS 386 exhibits irregular variations of the optical brightness (V=10.92+/-0.05 mag), while the near-IR brightness varies up to ~0.3 mag following the spectroscopic period. We explain this behavior by a variable illumination of the dusty disk inner rim by the B-type component. Doppler tomography based on the orbital variations of emission-line profiles shows that the material is distributed near the B-type component and in a circumbinary disk. We conclude that the system has undergone a strong mass transfer that created the circumstellar material and increased the B-type component mass. A two-phase emission detector containing 5 kg of liquid Xe is installed at the horizontal experimental channel of the research nuclear reactor IRT MEPhI to measure the liquid Xe response to nuclei recoils with kinetic energies below 1 keV. Preliminary tests have demonstrated that $ \geq 15~\mu\hbox{s}$ electron lifetime in liquid Xe and $\sim 10$ photoelectrons single ionization electron signal are achieved. These parameters are sufficient to detect and identify events at the single electron level.

The problems of detecting components and predicting dynamical processes are considered. Schemes for predicting chaotic time series that are based on detecting their regular, anomalous, and chaotic components followed by applying one of the described prediction methods to the regular component are presented. Regular components are detected using robust linear splines and singular spectrum analysis. Provided examples show that the presented schemes allow predicting dynamical processes with acceptable accuracy.

Results of the boundary value problem solution for determining the trajectory of returning from the lunar orbit and landing on the Vostochnyi launch site are presented. The solution includes the calculation of the required expenditure of the characteristic velocity for forming the return trajectory and an estimate of the correction impulses for ensuring the required condition of the atmosphere entry. As the descent module moves in the atmosphere, the terminal guidance algorithm developed earlier is used; this algorithm realizes a skip entry trajectory. Results of the statistical simulation of descent trajectories in the disturbed atmosphere for the real-life condition of returning from the Moon are presented. It is shown that, in the case of perfect navigation and load factors of about five, the accuracy of the descent module guidance to the Vostochnyi landing site within 2 km can be achieved.

In 2015 July 29 - September 1 the satellite XMM-Newton pointed at the BL Lac object PG 1553+133 six times, collecting data for 218 hours. During one of these epochs, simultaneous observations by the Swift satellite were requested to compare the results of the X-ray and optical-UV instruments. Optical, near-infrared and radio monitoring was carried out by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration for the whole observing season. We here present the results of the analysis of all these data, together with an investigation of the source photometric and polarimetric behaviour over the last three years. The 2015 EPIC spectra show slight curvature and the corresponding light curves display fast X-ray variability with a time scale of the order of 1 hour. In contrast to previous results, during the brightest X-ray states detected in 2015 the simple log-parabolic model that best-fits the XMM-Newton data also reproduces reasonably well the whole synchrotron bump, suggesting a peak in the near-UV band. We found evidence of a wide rotation of the polarization angle in 2014, when the polarization degree was variable, but the flux remained almost constant. After a quiescence period of about 10 years, the classical EXor source V1118 Ori has undergone an accretion outburst in 2015 September. The maximum brightness (DV > 4 mag) was reached in 2015 December and was maintained for several months. Since 2016 September, the source is in a declining phase. Photometry and low/ high-resolution spectroscopy were obtained with MODS and LUCI2 at the {\it Large Binocular Telescope}, with the facilities at the Asiago 1.22 and 1.82 m telescopes, and with GIANO at the {\it Telescopio Nazionale Galileo}. The spectra are dominated by emission lines of \hi\ and neutral metallic species. From line and continuum analysis we derive the mass accretion rate and its evolution during the outburst. Considering that extinction may vary between 1.5 and 2.9 mag, we obtain m_acc= 0.3$-$2.0 10$^{-8}$ m_sun/yr, in quiescence and m_acc= 0.2$-$1.9 10$^{-6}$ m_sun/yr, at the outburst peak. The Balmer decrement shape has been interpreted by means of line excitation models, finding that from quiescence to outburst peak, the electron density has increased from $\sim$ 2 10$^9$ cm$^{-3}$ to $\sim$ 4 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. The profiles of the metallic lines are symmetric and narrower than 100 km s$^{-1}$, while \hi\, and \hei\,\,lines show prominent wings extending up to $\pm$ 500 km s$^{-1}$. The metallic lines likely originate at the base of the accretion columns, where neutrals are efficiently shielded against the ionizing photons, while faster ionized gas is closer to the star. Outflowing activity is testified by the detection of a variable P Cyg-like profile of the H$\alpha$ and \hei\, 1.08\,$\mu$m lines., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We present the results of an optical spectroscopic monitoring program targeting NGC 5548 as part of a larger multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The campaign spanned six months and achieved an almost daily cadence with observations from five ground-based telescopes. The H$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$4686 broad emission-line light curves lag that of the 5100 $\AA$ optical continuum by $4.17^{+0.36}_{-0.36}$ days and $0.79^{+0.35}_{-0.34}$ days, respectively. The H$\beta$ lag relative to the 1158 $\AA$ ultraviolet continuum light curve measured by the Hubble Space Telescope is roughly $\sim$50% longer than that measured against the optical continuum, and the lag difference is consistent with the observed lag between the optical and ultraviolet continua. This suggests that the characteristic radius of the broad-line region is $\sim$50% larger than the value inferred from optical data alone. We also measured velocity-resolved emission-line lags for H$\beta$ and found a complex velocity-lag structure with shorter lags in the line wings, indicative of a broad-line region dominated by Keplerian motion. The responses of both the H$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$4686 emission lines to the driving continuum changed significantly halfway through the campaign, a phenomenon also observed for C IV, Ly $\alpha$, He II(+O III]), and Si IV(+O IV]) during the same monitoring period. Finally, given the optical luminosity of NGC 5548 during our campaign, the measured H$\beta$ lag is a factor of five shorter than the expected value implied by the $R_\mathrm{BLR} - L_\mathrm{AGN}$ relation based on the past behavior of NGC 5548., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ApJ

A concept of the terminal descent control algorithm of the descent module at reentry into the Earth atmosphere with near-parabolic velocity is proposed. Trajectories with one and two (skip reentry) reentries are considered. Simultaneously, downrange and crossrange misses are eliminated by controlling the bank angle and time of bank angle reversal at each phase of the trajectory. The designed control meets the specified load factor constraint.

A model of the general motion of the descent module that includes the motion of its center of mass and the attitude motion is constructed. An improved estimate of the reachability region in the case of descent in the disturbed Earth atmosphere is obtained. A terminal descent control algorithm with three bank angle reversals for the simultaneous elimination of predicted downrange and cross-range errors with regard to the constraint on the tolerable load factor n tol ≤ 3 is used.

In the present work the problem of chaotic dynamical processes forecasting are considered if methods of a preliminary filtration are used. Schemes of chaotic dynamical processes forecasting by means of preliminary extraction abnormal, chaotic and trend components and the further application to trend component for forecasting are considered. Extraction trend component on a basis of robust schemes, in particular, new one-sided robust estimation scheme can be carried out by means of robust orthogonal polynomials. The examples showing efficiency of offered schemes of forecasting are presented.

Results concerning the terminal guidance algorithm at the reentry of the descent module into the Earth atmosphere are presented. This algorithm simultaneously eliminates predicted deviations in the downrange and crossrange directions. The restriction on the tolerable load factor n � 3 is taken into account. Three reentry angles are analyzed: the medium angle �1.5°, the steep angle �1.9°, and the flat angle �1.2°. The motion of the descent module is considered in the disturbed Earth atmosphere represented by the TsNIIMash model. This model includes variations of the atmosphere density and the wind field. It is demonstrated that, depending on the reentry angle, the proposed algorithm guarantees the downrange maneuver zone in the range 1240---1890 km and the crossrange maneuver zone of 210---220 km on one side. The maximum guidance error at the altitude of 1 km does not exceed 0.8 km, and the average error is 0.1 km. The algorithm uses up to three bank angle reversals and uses the numerical prediction of the remaining part of the trajectory when choosing the guidance parameters. The concept of the automatic adjustment of the bank angle reference function depending on the entry angle and the prescribed distance to the target point in the maneuver zone is formulated.

We present ground-based optical photometric monitoring data for NGC 5548, part of an extended multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The light curves have nearly daily cadence from 2014 January to July in nine filters (\emph{BVRI} and \emph{ugriz}). Combined with ultraviolet data from the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} and \emph{Swift}, we confirm significant time delays between the continuum bands as a function of wavelength, extending the wavelength coverage from 1158\,\AA\ to the $z$ band ($\sim\!9160$\,\AA). We find that the lags at wavelengths longer than the {\it V} band are equal to or greater than the lags of high-ionization-state emission lines (such as He\,{\sc ii}\,$\lambda 1640$ and $\lambda 4686$), suggesting that the continuum-emitting source is of a physical size comparable to the inner broad-line region (BLR). The trend of lag with wavelength is broadly consistent with the prediction for continuum reprocessing by an accretion disk with $\tau \propto \lambda^{4/3}$. However, the lags also imply a disk radius that is 3 times larger than the prediction from standard thin-disk theory, assuming that the bolometric luminosity is 10\% of the Eddington luminosity ($L = 0.1L_{\rm Edd}$). Using optical spectra from the Large Binocular Telescope, we estimate the bias of the interband continuum lags due to BLR emission observed in the filters. We find that the bias for filters with high levels of BLR contamination ($\sim\! 20\%$) can be important for the shortest continuum lags, and likely has a significant impact on the {\it u} and {\it U} bands owing to Balmer continuum emission., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, accepted to ApJ. Here we report on the results of the WEBT photo-polarimetric campaign targeting the blazar S5~0716+71, organized in March 2014 to monitor the source simultaneously in BVRI and near IR filters. The campaign resulted in an unprecedented dataset spanning $\sim 110$\,h of nearly continuous, multi-band observations, including two sets of densely sampled polarimetric data mainly in R filter. During the campaign, the source displayed pronounced variability with peak-to-peak variations of about $30\%$ and "bluer-when-brighter" spectral evolution, consisting of a day-timescale modulation with superimposed hourlong microflares characterized by $\sim 0.1$\,mag flux changes. We performed an in-depth search for quasi-periodicities in the source light curve; hints for the presence of oscillations on timescales of $\sim 3$\,h and $\sim 5$\,h do not represent highly significant departures from a pure red-noise power spectrum. We observed that, at a certain configuration of the optical polarization angle relative to the positional angle of the innermost radio jet in the source, changes in the polarization degree led the total flux variability by about 2\,h; meanwhile, when the relative configuration of the polarization and jet angles altered, no such lag could be noted. The microflaring events, when analyzed as separate pulse emission components, were found to be characterized by a very high polarization degree ($> 30\%$) and polarization angles which differed substantially from the polarization angle of the underlying background component, or from the radio jet positional angle. We conduct a multiwavelength continuum variability study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 to investigate the temperature structure of its accretion disk. The 19 overlapping continuum light curves (1158 to 9157 angstroms) combine simultaneous HST , Swift , and ground-based observations over a 180 day period from 2014 January to July. Light-curve variability is interpreted as the reverberation response of the accretion disk to irradiation by a central time-varying point source. Our model yields the disk inclination, i, temperature T1 at 1 light day from the black hole, and a temperature-radius slope, alpha. We also infer the driving light curve and find that it correlates poorly with both the hard and soft X-ray light curves, suggesting that the X-rays alone may not drive the ultraviolet and optical variability over the observing period. We also decompose the light curves into bright, faint, and mean accretion-disk spectra. We present results of the optical spectral and photometric observations of the nucleus of Markarian 6 made with the 2.6-m Shajn telescope at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. The continuum and emission Balmer line intensities varied more than by a factor of two during 1992-2008. The lag between the continuum and Hbeta emission line flux variations is 21.1+-1.9 days. For the Halpha line the lag is about 27 days but its uncertainty is much larger. We use Monte-Carlo simulation of the random time series to check the effect of our data sampling on the lag uncertainties and we compare our simulation results with those obtained by random subset selection (RSS) method of Peterson et al. (1998). The lag in the high-velocity wings are shorter than in the line core in accordance with the virial motions. However, the lag is slightly larger in the blue wing than in the red wing. This is a signature of the infall gas motion. Probably the BLR kinematic in the Mrk 6 nucleus is a combination of the Keplerian and infall motions. The velocity-delay dependence is similar for individual observational seasons. The measurements of the Hbeta line width in combination with the reverberation lag permits us to determine the black hole mass, M_BH=(1.8+-0.2)x10^8 M_sun. This result is consistent with the AGN scaling relationships between the BLR radius and the optical continuum luminosity (R_BLR is proportional to L^0.5) as well as with the black-hole mass-luminosity relationship (M_BH-L) under the Eddington luminosity ratio for Mrk 6 to be L_bol/L_Edd ~ 0.01.

Results concerning the terminal guidance algorithm at the reentry of the descent module into the Earth atmosphere are presented. This algorithm simultaneously eliminates predicted errors in the longitudinal and lateral directions. The restriction on the load factor n ? 3 is taken into account. The motion of the descent module is considered in the disturbed Earth atmosphere using two of global atmosphere models--the TsNIIMash model created in due time for the Energy-Buran project and the Computational Model of the Earth Disturbed Atmosphere (CMEDA) developed in the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm guarantees the downrange maneuver zone of 1500 km with a guidance error less than 1 km using three reversals of the bank angle when the descent module enters the atmosphere at an angle of ?1.5°. The algorithm automatically adjusts the parameters of the bank angle control function depending on the distance to the desired target in the maneuver zone. For small ranges to the target, the constant load factor mode is realized. For large ranges to the target, sufficient store of energy is reserved for eliminating singular controls. For medium ranges to the target, the so-called k ? mode is used to balance the load factor maximums on the first and the second halves of the descent trajectory.

The problems connected with the analysis of angular motion of a landing module of a manned space transport "Soyuz" are addressed. The mathematical model and methods for investigation of specific features of angular motion of a landing module of this type in an atmosphere are presented. Algorithms of analog and digital control loops are described. The methods for a posteriori estimation of balancing characteristics of the landing module are presented.

Long-term monitoring data at five radio frequencies from 4.8 to 37 GHz obtained at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Metsahovi Radio Observatory of Aalto University, and the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory are used to analyze variations of the flux of the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) 3C 454.3. The dynamical characteristics of the three latest powerful flares from 2004 to 2010 are analyzed in detail. Observations in the gamma-ray (0.1–300 GeV), X-ray (2–10 kev, 15–50 keV), and optical are also used. Delays in the development of flares at different frequencies are derived. An empirical frequency dependence for the delays of flares from the gamma-ray to the radio is determined, which can be fit using a logarithmic low and remains the same from flare to flare. The physical characteristics of the central region of the AGN 3C 454.3 are used to estimate the size of its Stromgren sphere, taking into account the relevant mechanisms for heating and cooling the medium, as well as the adopted laws for the variation of the density and temperature with distance from the source of ionization. A model for the location of the radiation regions in the jet at various frequency ranges during the development of flares is proposed.

We present the final results from a high sampling rate, multi-month, spectrophotometric reverberation mapping campaign undertaken to obtain either new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag measurements for several relatively low-luminosity AGNs. We have reliably measured thetime delay between variations in the continuum and Hbeta emission line in six local Seyfert 1 galaxies. These measurements are used to calculate the mass of the supermassive black hole at the center of each of these AGNs. We place our results in context to the most current calibration of the broad-line region (BLR) R-L relationship, where our results remove outliers and reduce the scatter at the low-luminosity end of this relationship. Based on our UBV RI observations and X-ray data from the RXTE satellite, we have investigated the variability of the galaxy NGC 7469 over the period 1995–2009. In 1995–2000, the optical brightness of the galactic nucleus changed almost by 1 m in the U band. In 2000–2009, the amplitude of the optical variations was considerably lower. Regular X-ray observations began only in 2003. The X-ray fractional variability amplitude is higher than the optical one. The optical variability amplitude decreases with increasing wavelength. The full width at half maximum of the X-ray and B-band autocorrelation functions is about 8 and 62 days, respectively. The structure functions (SF) in the X-ray range on time scales up to 7 days and in the optical range on time scales up to 100 days have the form of a power law SF(τ) ∼ τ b , where τ is the time shift. On time scales of more than a day, where both structure functions have been determined rather reliably, their slopes differ markedly: b = 1.34 ± 0.06 and b = 0.25 ± 0.05 for the optical and X-ray ranges, respectively. The X-ray and B-band structure functions begin to flatten, respectively, near 6–8 days and on time scales of about 90 days. The observed structure functions can be described by the model of a superposition of independent Gaussian flares whose number changes with duration ω as n(ω) ∼ ω α and whose amplitudes depend on duration as A(ω) ∼ ω β. The flux distribution and the flux-amplitude relation are consistent with the model of a light curve in the form of a superposition of random flares. Once the fast intensity variations have been filtered out on long time scales, the X-ray light curve correlates well with the optical one. No lag of the X-ray variations relative to those in the B band is detected. The light variations in the R and I bands lag behind those in the B band calculated from the centroid of the cross-correlation function by 2.6 and 3.5 days, respectively, at a 3σ confidence level.

The AZT-8 70-cm telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory was upgraded in the early 2000s. Obsolete pieces of equipment of the telescope were replaced and new ones were developed. The creation of a special control program has enabled the telescope to be pointed at objects automatically. As a result, it has become much easier to control the telescope and the efficiency of using the observing time has increased significantly.

The influence of a sampling rate of ADC on the efficiency of the pulse shape discrimination procedure (PSDP) developed for gamma-neutron discrimination was studied. Pu-Be neutron source and two types of digitizers (CAEN DT5730 and CAEN DT5743) were used. Both digitizers together with application software allow to store sequences of waveforms from a scintillation detector. The functional features of the CAEN DT5730 and CAEN DT5743 are described, and experimental characteristics of their operation are compared. Experimental values of an efficiency of neutron/gamma signal discrimination using two ADCs with different sampling frequencies are presented.

In the presented work, we investigated several digital methods of a discrimination signals from fast neutrons and gamma quanta. The experimental setup consists of a Pu-Be neutron source, a scintillation detector with an organic para-terphenyl monocrystal, and a digitizer (CAEN DT5730, 500 MS/s). Mixed waveform sequences were stored and then separated by pulse shape. Four methods were used for signals separation. Comparison of the traditional and the new methods of Figure of Merit (FOM) calculation is given. FOM = 1.5 was obtained in our setup for the minimum threshold value. A scintillation detector with a para-terphenyl crystal was used to measure neutron yield in the neutron generator with carbon nanotubes.

A detailed analysis of the data from a high sampling rate, multi-month reverberation mapping campaign, undertaken primarily at MDM Observatory with supporting observations from telescopes around the world, reveals that the Hbeta emission region within the broad line regions (BLRs) of several nearby AGNs exhibit a variety of kinematic behaviors. While the primary goal of this campaign was to obtain either new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag measurements for several relatively low luminosity AGNs (presented in a separate work), we were also able to unambiguously reconstruct velocity-resolved reverberation signals from a subset of our targets. Through high cadence spectroscopic monitoring of the optical continuum and broad Hbeta emission line variations observed in the nuclear regions of NGC 3227, NGC 3516, and NGC 5548, we clearly see evidence for outflowing, infalling, and virialized BLR gas motions, respectively.

Based on our UBV RI observations and X-ray data from the RXTE satellite, we have investigated the variability of the galaxy 3C 120 over the period 1996–2008. The relative variability amplitude in the U and B bands without any subtraction of the contribution from the underlying galaxy is 23 and 22%, respectively, against 21% in the X-ray band. The autocorrelation function based on the B-band data is considerably wider than that based on the X-ray data. The structure functions on a time scale from 1 to ∼100–300 days in the X-ray and optical spectral ranges have the form of a power law (SF ∼ τb). However, their indices differ significantly: b = 0.42 in the X-ray band and b = 1.36 in the B band. Considering the X-ray and optical variabilities as a superposition of independent flares in a wide range of durations, we may conclude that the amplitudes of short flares in the X-ray band are higher than those in the optical one and, conversely, the relative amplitudes of long flares in the X-ray band are slightly lower than those in the optical one, i.e., short events dominate in the X-ray band. The optical flux variations in the Rc and Ic bands lag significantly behind those in the B band, by 3.9−0.7+1.0 and 6.2−0.6+1.1 days, respectively, if the lag is estimated from the centroid of the cross-correlation function. The X-ray variability on a time scale of about 1800 days (∼5 yr) lags behind the B-band variations by 5.3−3.3+2.7 days, but the confidence level of this estimate is only 87%. A more detailed analysis of the correlation between the X-ray and optical emissions has revealed a fairly complex picture: different degrees of correlation between the optical and X-ray fluxes are observed at different times.

We analyze the spectroscopic and photometric observations of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) 1E 0754.6+3928 performed at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in 1998–2004. Based on formal spectroscopic criteria for the optical wavelength range, we can classify this object as a narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy. Over the period of its observations, the AGN 1E 0754.6+3928 showed a very low rms flux variability amplitude in both continuum and Hβ (∼3%). The Hβ time lag relative to the continuum has been found from the cross-correlation function centroid to be τ cent = 112 −67 +215 days. This result and the Hβ line dispersion estimate have allowed us to determine the central black hole mass by the reverberation method: 1.05 × 108 M ⊙. The position of 1E 0754.6+3928 in the black hole mass-luminosity diagram agrees with the positions of other NLS1 galaxies and can be explained by an enhanced mass accretion rate in the central source.

The occurrence of low-amplitude flux variations in blazars on hourly timescales, commonly known as microvariability, is still a widely debated subject in high-energy astrophysics. Several competing scenarios have been proposed to explain such occurrences, including various jet plasma instabilities leading to the formation of shocks, magnetic reconnection sites, and turbulence. In this letter we present the results of our detailed investigation of a prominent, five-hour-long optical microflare detected during recent WEBT campaign in 2014, March 2-6 targeting the blazar 0716+714. After separating the flaring component from the underlying base emission continuum of the blazar, we find that the microflare is highly polarized, with the polarization degree $\sim (40-60)\%$$\pm (2-10)\%$, and the electric vector position angle $\sim (10 - 20)$deg$\pm (1-8)$deg slightly misaligned with respect to the position angle of the radio jet. The microflare evolution in the $(Q,\,U)$ Stokes parameter space exhibits a looping behavior with a counter-clockwise rotation, meaning polarization degree decreasing with the flux (but higher in the flux decaying phase), and approximately stable polarization angle. The overall very high polarization degree of the flare, its symmetric flux rise and decay profiles, and also its structured evolution in the $Q-U$ plane, all imply that the observed flux variation corresponds to a single emission region characterized by a highly ordered magnetic field.
