The escalating presence of plastics in agriculture has raised concerns regarding Agricultural Plastic Waste (APW). Hitherto, a lack of comprehensive plasticulture data impedes effective waste management strategies, potentially resulting in plastic pollution and contributing to microplastic formation. APW locations and quantities are pivotal for territorial planning and the formulation of public policies on waste management and land use. Remote detection of agri-plastics has garnered increased consideration, particularly in mapping plastic-mulched farmlands (PMFs) dispersed in extensive regions. This study investigates whether the use of satellite image time series can map PMFs accurately. We assessed pixel-based classification using a 16-day composite time series of Sentinel-2 imagery (S2-16D) obtained from the Brazil Data Cube project. The Plastic-Mulched Landcover Index (PMLI) was joined into S2-16D bands because it is an index focused on PMF detection. Four classifiers (RF, MLP, L-TAE, and TCNN) were compared through agreed classification metrics. The most promising outcome showed an overall accuracy of 100% employing L-TAE but with visible noise in the map. The time series enhanced accuracy while minimizing background confusion, offering a viable solution for PMF detection. The PMF map presented herein represents an initial stride toward fostering circularity in plasticulture throughout South America.

Terminal lakes (without outflow) retain elements and compounds that reach them through fluvial, point source or atmospheric deposition. If the lake sediment is exposed, some of these chemicals could become toxic dust particulates. The Great Salt Lake (GSL) in Utah is a terminal lake that experienced record-low lake elevation in 2021-22, exposing vast areas of playa. Here, we used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to analyze the environmental chemistry of GSL shallow sediment during historic lows in spring, summer, and fall of 2021. Contaminants at the subsurface interface are most able to influence diffusion into the water column and uptake by benthic biota. We focused our analysis on copper, thallium, arsenic, mercury, lead, and zinc, which have been historically deposited in this region and are toxic when at high concentrations. We compared records of regional mining activity to understand the current contamination and assess relevant spatial and temporal gradients. We also used two different extraction methods (EPA 3050b and NH4AcO at pH=7) that can distinguish “environmentally available” vs. tightly associated and less available fractions. We observed consistent concentration of copper across sites indicating a larger relative impact of atmospheric deposition, with some evidence indicating further impacts of point sources. Arsenic, on the other hand, is maintained at high levels in submerged sediments and is likely geologically- and fluvially- derived. Thallium and mercury fluctuate seasonally and correlate with lake elevation. Lead and zinc levels are relatively low in GSL sites compared with freshwater input sites, indicating the deep brine layer may sequester these heavy metals, preventing their release into the water column. Overall, the concentrations of most metals in GSL sediments have declined from historic highs. However, each contaminant has distinct sources, seasonality, mobility and transmission. Complete recovery (if possible) may require many more decades and individual remediation strategies.

Abstract Background In patients with resectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), induction chemoimmunotherapy followed by surgical resection has shown unprecedented rates of pathological response and event-free survival. However, a triple-induction including radiochemotherapy and immunotherapy followed by surgical resection has not been routinely established in clinical practice. Case presentation We report the case of a 47-year-old patient with stage IIIA NSCLC who was treated in a combined concept including induction concurrent radiochemotherapy, followed by 4 cycles of pembrolizumab and subsequent intrapericardial left-sided pneumonectomy. Histological analysis revealed a pathological complete response. Conclusions The case demonstrates that the combination of neoadjuvant chemo-, radio- and immunotherapy in advanced NSCLC may lead to a relevant down-staging and may enable a R0-resection of a borderline resectable tumor. However, the combination of four different treatment modalities requires resilience and a good performance status. A triple induction treatment may be a promising option for selected patients with locally advanced NSCLC and good performance status.

Land use and land cover (LULC) classification has long been an essential topic in Earth Observation research and plays a key role in the sustainable development of agriculture. This study evaluated the accuracy of LULC classification based on an initial clustering step in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape using PlanetScope imagery while checking for variability among their Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) temporal signatures. We adopt an object-based image analysis to generate image-objects and then extract statistical information of PlanetScope spectral bands and vegetation indices as input information for classification. The exploratory analysis focused on the double crop class and calculated the distance between NDVI temporal signatures of paired land parcels. We applied an unsupervised clustering technique along with Random Forest algorithm based on multiple tests to classify and analyse gains and losses in accuracies produced by these approaches. Our results showed that the initial clustering method outperformed the non-clustered classification of LULC in overall accuracy measures. The exploratory analysis demonstrated that double crops might present high intra-class variability and diverse crop calendars for neighbour land parcels. The accuracies achieved represent promising opportunities for the sufficiently accurate classification of such areas, and the knowledge of the intra-class variability allows the analyst to infer the temporal dynamics of crop fields. We reinforce that further work could assess other types of classifiers, especially in areas with a large number of crop types and distinct management practices.

Abstract Development can be altered to match phenotypes with the environment, and the genetic mechanisms that direct such alternative phenotypes are beginning to be elucidated. Yet, the rules that govern environmental sensitivity vs. invariant development, and potential epigenetic memory, remain unknown. Here, we show that plasticity of nematode mouth forms is determined by histone 4 lysine 5 and 12 acetylation (H4K5/12ac). Acetylation in early larval stages provides a permissive chromatin state, which is susceptible to induction during the critical window of environmental sensitivity. As development proceeds deacetylation shuts off switch gene expression to end the critical period. Inhibiting deacetylase enzymes leads to fixation of prior developmental trajectories, demonstrating that histone modifications in juveniles can carry environmental information to adults. Finally, we provide evidence that this regulation was derived from an ancient mechanism of licensing developmental speed. Altogether, our results show that H4K5/12ac enables epigenetic regulation of developmental plasticity that can be stored and erased by acetylation and deacetylation, respectively.

Integrated crop–livestock systems (ICLS) are among the main viable strategies for sustainable agricultural production. Mapping these systems is crucial for monitoring land use changes in Brazil, playing a significant role in promoting sustainable agricultural production. Due to the highly dynamic nature of ICLS management, mapping them is a challenging task. The main objective of this research was to develop a method for mapping ICLS using deep learning algorithms applied on Satellite Image Time Series (SITS) data cubes, which consist of Sentinel-2 (S2) and PlanetScope (PS) satellite images, as well as data fused (DF) from both sensors. This study focused on two Brazilian states with varying landscapes and field sizes. Targeting ICLS, field data were combined with S2 and PS data to build land use and land cover classification models for three sequential agricultural years (2018/2019, 2019/2020, and 2020/2021). We tested three experimental settings to assess the classification performance using S2, PS, and DF data cubes. The test classification algorithms included Random Forest (RF), Temporal Convolutional Neural Network (TempCNN), Residual Network (ResNet), and a Lightweight Temporal Attention Encoder (L-TAE), with the latter incorporating an attention-based model, fusing S2 and PS within the temporal encoders. Experimental results did not show statistically significant differences between the three data sources for both study areas. Nevertheless, the TempCNN outperformed the other classifiers with an overall accuracy above 90% and an F1-Score of 86.6% for the ICLS class. By selecting the best models, we generated annual ICLS maps, including their surrounding landscapes. This study demonstrated the potential of deep learning algorithms and SITS to successfully map dynamic agricultural systems.

Introduction Approximately 30% of somatic hospital inpatients experience psychosocial distress, contributing to increased (re-)hospitalisation rates, treatment resistance, morbidity, and direct and indirect costs. However, such distress often remains unrecognised and unaddressed. We established ‘SomPsyNet’, a ‘stepped and collaborative care model’ (SCCM) for somatic hospital inpatients, aiming at alleviating this issue through early identification of distress and provision of appropriate care, providing problem-focused pathways and strengthening collaborative care. We report the protocol of the ‘SomPsyNet’ study, aiming to evaluate implementation and impact of the SCCM on distressed patients’ health-related quality of life. Secondary objectives include assessing efficacy of the screening procedures, influence of SCCM on other health outcomes and associated costs.Methods and analysis Our stepped wedge cluster randomised trial conducted at three tertiary hospitals comprises three conditions: treatment as usual (TAU) without screening for distress (phase 0), TAU with screening but without consequences (phase I, main comparator) and TAU with screening and psychosomatic-psychiatric consultations for those distressed (phase II). The time-of-transition between phases I and II was randomised. Sample size target is N=2200–2500 participants, with 6 month follow-up for distressed (anticipated n=640–700) and a subsample of non-distressed (anticipated n=200) patients. Primary outcome is mental health-related quality of life (SF-36 ‘Mental Health Component Summary score’); secondary outcomes include psychosocial distress, anxiety, depressive and somatic symptoms, symptom burden and distress, resilience, social support and qualitative of life, assessed by internationally accepted instruments, with good psychometric properties. Further, health claims data will be used to assess SCCM’s impact on direct and indirect costs.Ethics and dissemination SomPsyNet adheres to the Helsinki Declaration and is approved by the ‘Ethikkommission Nordwest- und Zentralschweiz’ (2019–01724). Findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and communicated to participants, healthcare professionals and the public.Trial registration number Swiss National Clinical Trials Portal; ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04269005, updated 19.09.2023).

When testing the virucidal activity of biocides, the non-inactivated residual virus is titrated on cell cultures by the end point dilution method on 96-well tissue culture plates. However, residues of the biocide to be tested also come into contact with the cell cultures in varying concentrations and thus can lead to cytotoxic effects even at high levels of dilution. In the European standards for testing biocides, in particular disinfectants, methods such as Large-Volume-Plating (LVP) method and, in some guidelines, gel filtration procedures are described for reducing cytotoxic effects in the case of highly cytotoxic products, if the classical dilution method proves to be impractical.In order to enable the testing of highly cytotoxic biocides for their activity against viruses, an alternative method for reducing cytotoxicity is introduced, which is based on a procedure of isolating infectious viruses from cytotoxic patients’ materials such as stool and can be applied when the other methods fail.

In this study we report on associations found between several variables and changes in gorilla behavior. Two groups of gorillas were observed, one was a family group and the other was a bachelor group. The zoo was closed to visitors for two periods during the COVID-19 pandemic which made it possible to document any differences associated with the presence and absence of visitors. We also considered possible changes in behavior in relation to daily zoo attendance, time of day, and increasing maturity of group members. Output variables included six activities and one location which were assessed by instantaneous sampling, as well as level of aggressive and affiliative behavior assessed by recording all occurrences. Hour in which observations were done and successive months in the study, which serves as a measure of increasing maturity of younger gorillas, were the best predictors of activity and location, with each showing significant relationships with three output variables. Absence of visitors during zoo closure was also significantly associated with an increase in time the gorillas were proximate to potential visitor viewing areas. Aggression among the bachelors was lower when the zoo was closed and higher with maturation of the youngest male. Reviewing differences in level of aggression during the two periods of closure shows that decreased aggression among the bachelors was not a result of zoo closure.

Abstract Background An inadequate donor left atrial cuff is a rare technical issue after graft procurement for lung transplantation. With regard to the shortage of suitable donor organs for lung transplantation, these organs should be surgically reconstructed to avoid the loss of an organ and a futile intervention in the critically ill recipient. Case presentation We report a case of a 62-year old patient who underwent bilateral sequential lung transplantation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. During isolated lung procurement, the right inferior pulmonary vein was circumferentially transsected and separated from the right superior pulmonary and middle lobe veins. Subsequently, a reconstruction of the left atrial cuff with an acellular biological patch was performed to complete the atrium anastomosis. The patient experienced an uneventful postoperative recovery and a follow-up ventilation/perfusion scan showed normal perfusion of the right lower lobe. Conclusions This case demonstrates that reconstruction of an inadequate left atrial cuff with a biological patch is feasible and allows for an adequate venous drainage and therefore normal transplant organ function.

Summary: Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with higher substance use rates. Stimulant and non-stimulant pharmacotherapy improve adolescent ADHD, but their associations with prescription stimulant misuse (PSM), cocaine, and methamphetamine use are unclear. Using 2005–2020 US Monitoring the Future data, we investigated relationships between ADHD pharmacotherapy history and PSM, cocaine, or methamphetamine use. Methods: Secondary students (13–19 years) provided data on pharmacotherapy history (N = 199,560; 86.3% of total sample) between January 1, 2005 and May 31, 2020 in a cross-sectional multi-cohort study; weights assured a nationally representative sample. Participants were grouped by ADHD pharmacotherapy history: none (88.7%; principally non-ADHD controls); stimulant-only (5.8%); non-stimulant-only (3.3%); both stimulant and non-stimulant (2.1%). Outcomes were past-year PSM, cocaine, and methamphetamine use. Logistic regressions examined relationships between pharmacotherapy history and outcomes, controlling for sociodemographics, recent substance use, and stimulant treatment cessation. Findings: Past-year outcome rates were lowest in adolescents with no pharmacotherapy history: 4.7% for PSM [8310/174,561], 1.6% for cocaine [2858/174,688], and 0.7% for methamphetamine [1036/148,378]. A history of both stimulant and non-stimulant treatment was associated with the highest rates: 22.3% for PSM [940/4098], 10.4% for cocaine [450/4110], and 7.8% for methamphetamine [275/3427]. Adolescents who received monotherapy (stimulant- or non-stimulant-only) had intermediate rates, with no differences between monotherapy groups. Interpretation: While elevated PSM and illicit stimulant use rates are likely influenced by ADHD, our findings suggested adolescents with a history of both stimulant and non-stimulant pharmacotherapy are at highest risk for these stimulant outcomes. Adolescents receiving ADHD pharmacotherapy should be monitored for PSM and illicit stimulant use. With the recent evolution in the sensor's spatial resolution, such as the MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) of the Sentinel-2 mission, the need to use segmentation techniques in satellite images has increased. Although the advantages of image segmentation to delineate agricultural fields in images are already known, the literature shows that it is rarely used to consider temporal changes in highly managed regions with the intensification of agricultural activities. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate a multitemporal segmentation method based on the coefficient of variation of spectral bands and vegetation indices obtained from Sentinel-2 images, considering two agricultural years (2018–2019 and 2019–2020) in an area with agricultural intensification. Images of the coefficient of variation represented the spectro-temporal dynamics within the study area. These images were also used to apply an edge detection filter (Sobel) to verify their performance. The region-based algorithm Watershed Segmentation (WS) was used in the segmentation process. Subsequently, to assess the quality of the segmentation results produced, the metrics Potential Segmentation Error (PSE), Number-of-Segments Ratio (NSR), and Euclidean Distance 2 (ED2) were calculated from manually delineated reference objects. The segmentation achieved its best performance when applied to the unfiltered coefficient of variation images of spectral bands with an ED2 equal to 7.289 and 2.529 for 2018–2019 and 2019–2020, respectively. There was a tendency for the WS algorithm to produce over-segmentation in the study area; however, its use proved to be effective in identifying objects in a dynamic area with the intensification of agricultural activities.

Various approaches were developed considering the need to increase agricultural productivity in cultivated areas without more deforestation, such as the Integrated Crop livestock systems (ICLS). The ICLS could be composed of annual crops followed by pastureland with the presence of cattle. Due to the high temporal dynamic of rotation between crops over the season, monitoring these areas is a big challenge. Also, agricultural organizations worldwide highlight the need for early-season maps for this kind of work. In this context, this study evaluated the potential of open data (Sentinel-2) data to map ICLS areas. The performance of two classifiers was evaluated: one of Machine Learning (random forest) and the other of Deep Learning (LSTM). Three different time windows of data were tested (Entire season, 180 days, and 120 days). Using the RF classifier, it was possible to achieve satisfactory results (Overall accuracy higher than 80%) for the early season (180 days). However, further studies are needed to explain better the lower(when compared to Random Forest) accuracy achieved by LSTM net (0.79 % for 180 days) and compare the results achieved here with results for a study area with different rates of cloud cover.

Abstract National and local governments need to step up efforts to effectively implement the post‐2020 global biodiversity framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity to halt and reverse worsening biodiversity trends. Drawing on recent advances in interdisciplinary biodiversity science, we propose a framework for improved implementation by national and subnational governments. First, the identification of actions and the promotion of ownership across stakeholders need to recognize the multiple values of biodiversity and account for remote responsibility. Second, cross‐sectorial implementation and mainstreaming should adopt scalable and multifunctional ecosystem restoration approaches and target positive futures for nature and people. Third, assessment of progress and adaptive management can be informed by novel biodiversity monitoring and modeling approaches handling the multidimensionality of biodiversity change.

Pasture biomass information is essential to monitor forage resources in grazed areas, as well as to support grazing management decisions. The increasing temporal and spatial resolutions offered by the new generation of orbital platforms, such as Planet CubeSat satellites, have improved the capability of monitoring pasture biomass using remotely-sensed data. In a preliminary study, we investigated the potential of spectral variables derived from PlanetScope imagery to predict pasture biomass in an area of Integrated Crop-Livestock System (ICLS) in Brazil. Satellite and field data were collected during the same period (May–August 2019) for calibration and validation of the relation between predictor variables and pasture biomass using the Random Forest (RF) regression algorithm. We used as predictor variables 24 vegetation indices derived from PlanetScope imagery, as well as the four PlanetScope bands, and field management information. Pasture biomass ranged from approximately 24 to 656 g m−2, with a coefficient of variation of 54.96%. Near Infrared Green Simple Ratio (NIR/Green), Green Leaf Algorithm (GLA) vegetation indices and days after sowing (DAS) are among the most important variables as measured by the RF Variable Importance metric in the best RF model predicting pasture biomass, which resulted in Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 52.04 g m−2 (32.75%). Accurate estimates of pasture biomass using spectral variables derived from PlanetScope imagery are promising, providing new insights into the opportunities and limitations related to the use of PlanetScope imagery for pasture monitoring.

Abstract Background The success of shoulder arthroplasty, both reverse and anatomical, depends on correcting the underlying glenoid deformity especially in patients with an osteoarthritis. We hypothesized that the distribution of glenoid version and especially inclination are underestimated in the shoulder arthritis population, and also that superior glenoid inclination can be detected through 3-dimensional (3D) software program of computed tomography (CT) to a greater proportion in patients with rotator cuff insufficiency, but also in patients with osteoarthritis with an intact rotator cuff. Because of the influence of rotator cuff imbalance on secondary glenoid wear the values of the critical shoulder angle (CSA) and the fatty infiltration of the rotator cuff are further analyzed. The aim of our study is to determine; 1) the distribution of glenoid inclination and version; 2) the relationship between glenoid inclination, version, the critical shoulder angle (CSA) to the status of the rotator cuff; 3) the proportion of patients with both an intact rotator cuff and a superior inclination greater than 10°. Methods A total of 231 shoulders were evaluated with X-ray images, 3-dimentional (3D) software program of computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging. The cohort was divided into 3 groups according to their inclination angles and also grouped as intact-rotator cuff and torn-cuff group. Results The median (min/max) values for the 231 shoulders were 8° (− 23°/56°) for the inclination angle, − 11°(− 55°/23°) for the version angle, and 31.5°(17.6°/61.6°) for the CSA. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a severe impact on oncological and thoracic surgical practice worldwide. In many hospitals, the care of COVID-19 patients required a reduction of elective surgery, to avoid viral transmission within the hospital, and to save and preserve personnel and material resources. Cancer patients are more susceptible to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and are at an increased risk of a severe course of disease. In many patients with lung cancer, this risk is further increased owing to comorbidities, older age and a pre-existing lung disease. Surgical resection is an important part of the treatment in patients with early stage or locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer, but the treatment of these patients during the COVID-19 pandemic becomes a challenging balance between the risk of patient exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and the need to provide timely and adequate cancer treatment despite limited hospital capacities. This manuscript aims to provide an overview of the surgical treatment of lung cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic including the triage and prioritisation as well as the surgical approach, and our own experience with cancer surgery during the first pandemic wave. We furthermore aim to highlight the risk and potential consequences of delayed lung cancer treatment due to the deferral of surgery, screening appointments and follow-up visits. With much attention being diverted to COVID-19, it is important to retain awareness of cancer patients, maintain oncological surgery and avoid treatment delay during the pandemic.

Regenerative agricultural practices are a suitable path to feed the global population. Integrated Crop–livestock systems (ICLSs) are key approaches once the area provides animal and crop production resources. In Brazil, the expectation is to increase the area of ICLS fields by 5 million hectares in the next five years. However, few methods have been tested regarding spatial and temporal scales to map and monitor ICLS fields, and none of these methods use SAR data. Therefore, in this work, we explored the potential of three machine and deep learning algorithms (random forest, long short-term memory, and transformer) to perform early-season (with three-time windows) mapping of ICLS fields. To explore the scalability of the proposed methods, we tested them in two regions with different latitudes, cloud cover rates, field sizes, landscapes, and crop types. Finally, the potential of SAR (Sentinel-1) and optical (Sentinel-2) data was tested. As a result, we found that all proposed algorithms and sensors could correctly map both study sites. For Study Site 1(SS1), we obtained an overall accuracy of 98% using the random forest classifier. For Study Site 2, we obtained an overall accuracy of 99% using the long short-term memory net and the random forest. Further, the early-season experiments were successful for both study sites (with an accuracy higher than 90% for all time windows), and no significant difference in accuracy was found among them. Thus, this study found that it is possible to map ICLSs in the early-season and in different latitudes by using diverse algorithms and sensors.

Introduction. The study focuses on emotional speech perception and speech emotion recognition using prosodic clues alone. Theoretical problems of defining prosody, intonation and emotion along with the challenges of emotion classification are discussed. An overview of acoustic and perceptional correlates of emotions found in speech is provided. Technical approaches to speech emotion recognition are also considered in the light of the latest emotional speech automatic classification experiments.Methodology and sources. The typical “big six” classification commonly used in technical applications is chosen and modified to include such emotions as disgust and shame. A database of emotional speech in Russian is created under sound laboratory conditions. A perception experiment is run using Praat software’s experimental environment.Results and discussion. Cross-cultural emotion recognition possibilities are revealed, as the Finnish and international participants recognised about a half of samples correctly. Nonetheless, native speakers of Russian appear to distinguish a larger proportion of emotions correctly. The effects of foreign languages knowledge, musical training and gender on the performance in the experiment were insufficiently prominent. The most commonly confused pairs of emotions, such as shame and sadness, surprise and fear, anger and disgust as well as confusions with neutral emotion were also given due attention.Conclusion. The work can contribute to psychological studies, clarifying emotion classification and gender aspect of emotionality, linguistic research, providing new evidence for prosodic and comparative language studies, and language technology, deepening the understanding of possible challenges for SER systems.

Summary: Many animal and plant species respond to population density by phenotypic plasticity. To investigate if specific age classes and/or cross-generational signaling affect density-dependent plasticity, we developed a dye-based method to differentiate co-existing nematode populations. We applied this method to Pristionchus pacificus, which develops a predatory mouth form to exploit alternative resources and kill competitors in response to high population densities. Remarkably, adult, but not juvenile, crowding induces the predatory morph in other juveniles. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry of secreted metabolites combined with genetic mutants traced this result to the production of stage-specific pheromones. In particular, the P. pacificus-specific di-ascaroside#1 that induces the predatory morph is induced in the last juvenile stage and young adults, even though mouth forms are no longer plastic in adults. Background To improve health planning at primary health care (PHC) level, Business Plans were introduced in Tajikistan by the Enhancing Primary Health Care (EPHC) Services Project. Objective To describe the history and process of implementation of Business Plans and to identify barriers, facilitators and lessons learnt from scaling up Business Plans. Methods Set in a qualitative research design, we conducted a desk review of project and official documents and seventeen semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders at national and sub-national levels between May and July 2020. We used an interview guide informed by the ExpandNet/WHO framework and analyzed the data following a content analysis approach facilitated by MAXQDA. Results With the participation of various user organizations and resource teams and through a variety of strategic scale-up choices, Business Plans have been scaled up from a vertical pilot project to institutionalized health management tools covering 45% of Tajikistan’s PHC facilities. The most prominent facilitators for scaling up Business Plans were the institutionalization and integration of the tool into the Tajik health system, the close collaboration with Community Health Teams (CHTs), the high acceptance of the tool among the users, the advocacy through champions and policy-makers and the large dissemination network. The most outstanding barriers to scaling up Business Plans were insufficient financial or human resources, general weaknesses in health governance, the lack of a strategic scale-up plan and strategic decisions, the lack of motivation or overall vision to implement Business Plans at a large scale and difficulties in donor coordination. Conclusion To ensure the continuity of scaling up Business Plans, developing a scale-up strategy, strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration and participation during scaling up, and capacitating the user organizations of Business Plans are important next steps to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of Business Plans in the future.

Eigenfrequency tuning in microresonators is useful for a range of applications including frequency-agile optical filters and tunable optical frequency converters. In most of these applications, eigenfrequency tuning is achieved by thermal or mechanical means, while a few non-centrosymmetric crystals such as lithium niobate allow for such tuning using the linear electro-optic effect. Potassium tantalate-niobate (KTa1−xNbxO3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, KTN) is a particularly attractive material for electro-optic tuning purposes. It has both non-centrosymmetric and centrosymmetric phases offering outstandingly large linear as well as quadratic electro-optic coefficients near the phase transition temperature. We demonstrate whispering-gallery resonators made of KTN with quality factors of Q > 107 and electro-optic eigenfrequency tuning of more than 100 GHz at λ = 1040 nm for moderate field strengths of E = 250 V/mm. The tuning behavior near the phase transition temperature is analyzed by introducing a simple theoretical model. These results pave the way for applications such as electro-optically tunable microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs.

In this paper, we present and analyze a novel global database of soil infiltration measurements, the Soil Water Infiltration Global (SWIG) database. In total, 5023 infiltration curves were collected across all continents in the SWIG database. These data were either provided and quality checked by the scientists who performed the experiments or they were digitized from published articles. Data from 54 different countries were included in the database with major contributions from Iran, China, and the USA. In addition to its extensive geographical coverage, the collected infiltration curves cover research from 1976 to late 2017. Basic information on measurement location and method, soil properties, and land use was gathered along with the infiltration data, making the database valuable for the development of pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for estimating soil hydraulic properties, for the evaluation of infiltration measurement methods, and for developing and validating infiltration models. Soil textural information (clay, silt, and sand content) is available for 3842 out of 5023 infiltration measurements ( ∼ 76%) covering nearly all soil USDA textural classes except for the sandy clay and silt classes. Information on land use is available for 76 % of the experimental sites with agricultural land use as the dominant type ( ∼ 40%). We are convinced that the SWIG database will allow for a better parameterization of the infiltration process in land surface models and for testing infiltration models. All collected data and related soil characteristics are provided online in *.xlsx and *.csv formats for reference, and we add a disclaimer that the database is for public domain use only and can be copied freely by referencing it. Finally, we would like to encourage scientists to extend and update the SWIG database by uploading new data to it.

Abstract Background Differing perfusion of the left and right ventricular coronary territory may influence flow-profiles of saphenous vein grafts (SVGs). We compared flow parameters, measured by transit-time flowmetry (TTFM), in left- and right-sided SVGs during coronary artery by-pass grafting (CABG). Methods Routine TTFM measurements were obtained in 167 SVGs to the left territory (55%) and 134 SVGs to the right territory (total of 301 SVGs in 207 patients). The four standard TTFM parameters, [mean graft flow (MGF), pulsatility index (PI), percentage diastolic filling (%DF), and percentage backward flow (%BF)] were compared. Differences in flow parameters were also examined according to surgical technique (on- vs. off-pump). Results No significant difference between coronary territories was found for MGF, PI and %BF. Abstract Environmental cues can impact development to elicit distinct phenotypes in the adult. The consequences of phenotypic plasticity can have profound effects on morphology, life cycle, and behavior to increase the fitness of the organism. The molecular mechanisms governing these interactions are beginning to be elucidated in a few cases, such as social insects. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of systems that are amenable to rigorous experimentation, preventing both detailed mechanistic insight and the establishment of a generalizable conceptual framework. The mouth dimorphism of the model nematode Pristionchus pacificus offers the rare opportunity to examine the genetics, genomics, and epigenetics of environmental influence on developmental plasticity. Yet there are currently no easily tunable environmental factors that affect mouth-form ratios and are scalable to large cultures required for molecular biology. Here we present a suite of culture conditions to toggle the mouth-form phenotype of P. pacificus. The effects are reversible, do not require the costly or labor-intensive synthesis of chemicals, and proceed through the same pathways previously examined from forward genetic screens. Different species of Pristionchus exhibit different responses to culture conditions, demonstrating unique gene-environment interactions, and providing an opportunity to study environmental influence on a macroevolutionary scale.
