PANDA (anti-proton annihiliation at Darmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2 × 1032 cm−2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees sufficient safety margins.

Physics and Astronomy (miscellaneous) ,Instrumentation - Abstract
The additional terms caused by the nonlocality of the nonlinear optical response of the medium in the expressions for the optical angular momentum density, the optical angular momentum flux density and the torque density on light, which are related to each other by the angular momentum transformation law, are obtained as a consequence of peculiarities of the momentum conservation law in such media. It is shown that the manifestation of the nonlocality of the optical response only changes the form of polarization of medium included in the expression for the angular momentum density, whereas the definition of the angular momentum flux density contains additional term depending on the nonlocal nth order nonlinear optical susceptibility.

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Lambda}\Lambda$ and $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Xi}^+\Xi^-$. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $$\overline{\mathrm{P}}$$ P ¯ ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton–nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the Phase One setup. The physics programme that is achievable during Phase One is outlined in this paper.

The permutation symmetry relations of the nth order nonlocal nonlinear optical susceptibilities emerging in the absence of absorption are obtained from the basic statements of electrodynamics. The values of the nth order nonlocal nonlinear susceptibility tensor components with swapped frequencies and indices corresponding to the generated electric field and the electric field under the operator of differentiation in the constitutive equation only differ by their signs and signs of the interchanged frequencies. Additionally, there exist n 2 − n relations between three components of this tensor with cyclically permuted indices and frequencies corresponding to the generated field, the field under the operator of differentiation in the constitutive equation and one of the remaining fields involved into nonlinear process under consideration.

A particular analytical solution to the nonintegrable problem of plane electromagnetic wave propagation through an isotropic gyrotropic nonlinear medium is found in the form of elliptically polarized breather. The intensity ratio for the circularly polarized components of this wave, which remains constant during propagation, can be used to determine the ratio of local and nonlocal nonlinear susceptibilities describing the Kerr nonlinearity and its spatial dispersion.

Bound nuclear systems with two units of strangeness are still poorly known despite their importance for many strong interaction phenomena. Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent an unparalleled factory for various hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of systems which contain two or even more units of strangeness at the PANDA experiment at FAIR. For the first time, high resolution gamma-spectroscopy of doubly strange Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei will be performed, thus complementing measurements of ground state decays of Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei at J-PARC or possible decays of particle unstable hypernuclei in heavy ion reactions. High resolution spectroscopy of multistrange Xi(-) -atoms will be feasible and even the production of Omega(-) -atoms will be within reach. The latter might open the door to the vertical bar S vertical bar = 3 world in strangeness nuclear physics, by the study of the hadronic Omega(-) -nucleus interaction. For the first time it will be possible to study the behavior of Xi(+) in nuclear systems under well controlled conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one of the four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ will address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2 × 1032 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particle identification (PID) is crucial to the success of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ physics program. Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by a fast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/K separation up to 3.5 GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final state kaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes the technical design and the expected performance of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ Barrel DIRC detector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several key improvements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detailed detector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beams at GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/K separation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in the Barrel DIRC.

The components of electric field of the third harmonic beam, generated in isotropic medium with cubic nonlinearity by a monochromatic light beam carrying polarization singularity of an arbitrary type, are found analytically. The relation between C-points characteristics in the fundamental and signal beams are determined, as well as the impact of the phase mismatch on the shape of the C-lines.

The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

The paper considers a job shop scheduling problem similar to those taking place in many fields such as project management, educational sphere and operational planning of manufacturing process. The considered problem, in real life, has high dimensionality and it is quite hard to find even a feasible solution, therefore, making necessary a problem-oriented heuristic for solving it in reasonable time. Manufacturing process stability requires special care about restriction and, at the same time, operational planning requires finding solutions quickly. In this paper, hierarchical problem structure is proposed where the top-level problem is the traveling salesman problem and the nested resource-constrained project scheduling problem is replaced by the simulation model. This paper considers combinatorial genetic algorithm (GA) and Lin-Kernigan heuristic (LKH). The performance comparison is fulfilled and competitive results are demonstrated.

Sum topological charges of the circularly polarized components of a beam, generated in the bulk of an isotropic chiral medium by elliptically polarized fundamental beams with arbitrary transverse structure, are found. The impact of the ellipticity degrees of the polarization ellipses of the fundamental beams and the angle between the major axes of the ellipses on the sum topological charges is discussed.

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to ^+^- ^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos_{^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Conductivity of thin (∼200 nm) Indium Tin Oxide (TTO) films with pore size ∼2-3 nm demonstrates anomalous temperature behavior. After every heating-cooling cycle conductivity of the films reduced nearly irreversible. After exposing to the air conductivity increased to no more than 10 percent. We explain the effect by combination of water and oxygen adsorption and desorption from the surface and diffusion in the pores. Under heating electron-donor H2O molecules desorb and concentration of charge careers decreases respectively. Histeresis of temperature of conductivity can be related with electron-acceptor oxygen occupying adsorption sites of desorbed water molecules. These effects were never observed previously and result from the porous structure of the films.

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the $\bar{P}$ANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole $\bar{P}$ANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Fluorescence intensity of thioflavin T fluorogenic label increased significantly as a result of formation of enzyme-inhibitory complex with acetylcholinesterase of human blood erythrocytes. Thioflavin T is a reversible inhibitor, selectively reacting with acetylcholinesterase. Thioflavin T fluorescence intensity is proportional to acetylcholinesterase activity for the studied interval of enzyme activities. A rapid fluorescent method for measuring acetylcholinesterase activity is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Spectral studies of the interaction between amanitine and ethidium bromide fluorophore showed the appearance of a new intensive fluorescence band after addition of amanitine to ethidium bromide solution, caused by the formation of a charge-transfer complex. The new fluorescence band is located in a shorter wave region of the spectrum compared to ethidium bromide fluorescence band. Based on the results, a rapid fluorescent method for detection of amanitines was developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Inhibitory neurotransmission is important for brain function and requires specific transmitter receptors that are organized in synaptic domains. Gephyrin is a cytoskeletal organization protein that binds tubulin and plays an important role in clustering and organizing select inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors. Here, we tested if gephyrin is altered by protein accumulation stress that is common in age-related neurodegenerative disorders. For this, we used the hippocampal slice model that has been shown to exhibit chloroquine (CQN)-induced protein accumulation, microtubule destabilization, transport failure, and declines in excitatory neurotransmitter receptors and their responses. In addition to the decreases in excitatory receptor subunits and other glutamatergic markers, we found that gephyrin isoforms were reduced across the CQN treatment period. Associated with this decline in gephyrin levels was the production of three gephyrin breakdown products (GBDPs) of 30, 38, and 48 kDa. The induced effects on gephyrin were tested for evidence of recovery through enhancement of lysosomal function that is known to promote protein clearance and microtubule integrity. Using the lysosomal modulator Z-Phe-Ala-diazomethylketone (PADK), gephyrin levels were completely restored in correspondence with the recovery of excitatory glutamatergic components. In addition, GBDPs were significantly reduced after the 2-day PADK treatment, to levels that were at or below those measured in control cultures. These findings suggest that receptor-clustering mechanisms for inhibitory synapses are compromised during protein accumulation events. They also indicate that a lysosomal enhancement strategy can protect gephyrin integrity, which may be vital for the balance between inhibitory and excitatory signaling during age-related diseases.

- Abstract
The early processes that lead to synaptic dysfunction during aging are not clearly understood. Dysregulation of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors may cause age-related cognitive decline. Using hippocampal slice cultures exhibiting lysosomal dysfunction, an early marker of brain aging that is linked to protein accumulation, we identified alterations to AMPA and NMDA receptor-mediated synaptic currents. The miniature and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents that were examined after 3, 6, and 9 days of lysosomal disruption showed progressive changes in amplitude, frequency, and rise and decay kinetics. To investigate whether modifications in specific channel properties of single synaptic receptors contributed to changes in the amplitude and time course of synaptic currents, we examined the single channel properties of synaptic AMPA and NMDA receptors. The channel open probability and the mean open times showed decreases in both receptor populations, whereas the closed times were increased without any change in the channel conductance. The Western blot analysis revealed a progressive decline in synaptic markers including glutamate receptor subunits. These results indicate that lysosomal dysfunction leads to progressive functional perturbation of AMPA and NMDA receptors in this slice model of protein accumulation, suggesting that age-related cognitive decline could result from altered glutamate receptor function before reductions in synaptic density.

- Abstract
The SCF ubiquitin E3 ligase regulates ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis of many regulatory proteins such as p27(Kip1), IkappaB, and beta-catenin. We report the isolation of a CUL1 binding protein, p120(CAND1). We found the majority of CUL1 is in a complex with CAND1 and ROC1 independent of SKP1 and F box protein SKP2. Both in vivo and in vitro, CAND1 prevents the binding of SKP1 and SKP2 to CUL1 while dissociation of CAND1 from CUL1 promotes the reverse reaction. Neddylation of CUL1 or the presence of SKP1 and ATP causes CAND1 dissociation. Our data suggest that CAND1 regulates the formation of the SCF complex, and its dissociation from CUL1 is coupled with the incorporation of F box proteins into the SCF complex, causing their destabilization.

- Abstract
Alteration of the control of DNA replication and mitosis is considered to be a major cause of genome instability. To investigate the mechanism that controls DNA replication and genome stability, we used the RNA silencing-interference technique (RNAi) to eliminate the Drosophila geminin homologue from Schneider D2 (SD2) cells. Silencing of geminin by RNAi in SD2 cells leads to the cessation of mitosis and asynchronous overreplication of the genome, with cells containing single giant nuclei and partial ploidy between 4N and 8N DNA content. The effect of geminin deficiency is completely suppressed by cosilencing of Double parked (Dup), the Drosophila homologue of Cdt1, a replication factor to which geminin binds. The geminin deficiency-induced phenotype is also partially suppressed by coablation of Chk1/Grapes, indicating the involvement of Chk1/Grapes in the checkpoint control in response to overreplication. We found that the silencing of cyclin A, but not of cyclin B, also promotes the formation of a giant nucleus and overreplication. However, in contrast to the effect of geminin knockout, cyclin A deficiency leads to the complete duplication of the genome from 4N to 8N. We observed that the silencing of geminin causes rapid downregulation of Cdt1/Dup, which may contribute to the observed partial overreplication in geminin-deficient cells. Analysis of cyclin A and geminin double knockout suggests that the effect of cyclin A deficiency is dominant over that of geminin deficiency for cell cycle arrest and overreplication. Together, our studies indicate that both cyclin A and geminin are required for the suppression of overreplication and for genome stability in Drosophila cells.
