1. Feasibility and acceptability of conducting HIV vaccine trials in adolescents in South Africa: Going beyond willingness to participate towards implementation

Abstract

Background. HIV/AIDS remains a leading cause of death in adolescents (aged 15 - 25 years), and in sub-Saharan Africa HIV-related deaths continue to rise in this age group despite a decline in both adult and paediatric populations. This is attributable in part to high adolescent infection rates and supports the urgent need for more efficacious prevention strategies. In particular, an even partially effective HIV vaccine, given prior to sexual debut, is predicted to significantly curb adolescent infection rates. While adolescents have indicated willingness to participate in HIV vaccine trials, there are concerns around safety, uptake, adherence, and ethical and logistic issues.Objectives. To initiate a national, multisite project with the aim of identifying obstacles to conducting adolescent HIV vaccine trials in South Africa (SA).Method. A simulated HIV vaccine trial was conducted in adolescents aged 12 - 17 years across five SA research sites, using the already licensed Merck human papillomavirus vaccine Gardasil as a proxy for an HIV vaccine. Adolescents were recruited at community venues and, following a vaccine discussion group, invited to participate in the trial. Consent for trial enrolment was obtained from a parent or legal guardian, and participants aged 16 - 17 years were eligible only if sexually active. Typical vaccine trial procedures were applied during the five study visits, including the administration of vaccination injections at study visits 2, 3 and 4.Results. The median age of participants was 14 years (interquartile range 13 - 15), with 81% between the ages of 12 and 15 years at enrolment. Overall, 98% of screened participants opted to receive the vaccine, 588 participants enrolled, and 524 (89%) attended the final visit.Conclusions. This trial showed that adolescents can be recruited, enrolled and retained in clinical prevention trials with parental support. While promising, these results were tempered by the coupling of sexual-risk eligibility criteria and the requirement for parental/guardian consent, which was probably a barrier to the enrolment of high-risk older adolescents. Further debate around appropriate consent approaches for such adolescents in HIV prevention studies is required.

4. An unusual presentation of penile Mondor's disease in an HIV-positive patient

Abstract

Penile Mondor’s disease (PMD), or thrombosis of the dorsal vein, is an under-reported benign condition. Its aetiology is poorly understood. Clinically, it presents as a palpable cord in the dorsal vein of the penis, with pain or local discomfort, especially during erection. PMD may be diagnosed based on the medical history and physical examination. Management of the condition is conservative, with practitioners opting for various strategies including sexual/masturbatory abstinence, localised anticoagulant topical therapy and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In many cases, PMD will resolve within 4–8 weeks of presentation. Thrombectomy and resection of the superficial penile vein are applied surgically in patients refractory to the medical treatment. We describe the case of a 33-year-old patient known to have HIV who presented for severe painful dorsal induration and swelling of the proximal third of the penis. The patient had no recent history of sexual intercourse, penile trauma or other well-known risk factors for PMD. The physical examination was unequivocal, so a Doppler ultrasound was performed. A diagnosis of PMD was made and conservative treatment was prescribed. During a follow-up visit after 6 weeks, the patient had no symptoms and physical examination did not reveal anything pathological.

5. Osteoclasts and their circulating precursors in rheumatoid arthritis: Relationships with disease activity and bone erosions

Abstract

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have very different outcomes, particularly with regard to bone erosions. Since osteoclasts are responsible for bone destruction adjacent to rheumatoid synovium, profiling osteoclasts from circulating precursors in RA could help identify patients at risk for bone destruction. In this study, we sought to determine whether the functional characteristics of osteoclasts generated from their blood precursors were modified by RA activity or were intrinsic to osteoclasts and associated with the RA phenotype (erosive or not).Osteoclasts were generated in vitro from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of subjects with RA (n = 140), as well as sex- and age-matched healthy controls (n = 101). Osteoclastic parameters were analyzed at baseline and during the follow-up for up to 4 years, with regular assessment of RA activity, bone erosions, and bone mineral density (BMD). As a validation cohort, we examined RA patients from the Early Undifferentiated PolyArthritis (EUPA) study (n = 163).The proportion of CD14+ PBMC was higher in RA than in control subjects, but inversely correlated with the 28-joint disease activity score (DAS28). Also surprisingly, in osteoclast cultures from PBMCs, active RA was associated with lower osteoclastogenic capacity, while in vitro bone resorption per osteoclast and resistance to apoptosis were similar in both active and quiescent RA. In a small subgroup analysis, osteoclasts from subjects with recent RA that had progressed at four years to an erosive RA exhibited at baseline greater resistance to apoptosis than those from patients remaining non-erosive.Our findings establish that when RA is active, circulating monocytes have a reduced potential to generate osteoclasts from PBMCs in vitro. In addition, osteoclasts associated with erosive disease had resistance to apoptosis from the start of RA.

Abstract

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with venous vascular dysfunction below the level of injury, resulting in dysregulation of tissue fluid homeostasis in afflicted skin. The purpose of this study was to determine whether loss of neuronal control in chronic SCI also affects the skin lymphatic system. Morphology of lymphatics was characterized by immunohistochemistry and lymphatic gene expression profiles determined by DNA microarray analysis. In SCI, skin lymphatic function appeared to be impaired, because the ratio of functionally dilated versus collapsed lymphatic vessels was decreased 10-fold compared with control. Consequently, the average lumen area of lymphatic vessels was almost halved, possibly due to the known impaired connective tissue integrity of SCI skin. In fact, collagenases were found to be overexpressed in SCI skin, and dermal collagen structure was impaired. Molecular profiling also suggested an SCI-specific phenotype of increased connective tissue turnover and decreased lymphatic contractility. The total number of lymphatic vessels in SCI skin, however, was doubled, pointing to enhanced lymphangiogenesis. In conclusion, these data show, for the first time, that lymphatic function and development in human skin are under neuronal control. Because peripheral venous and lymphatic vascular defects are associated with disturbed fluid homeostasis, inappropriate wound healing reactions, and impaired skin immunity, they might contribute to the predisposition of afflicted individuals to pressure ulcer formation and wound healing disorders.

Abstract

Summary Objectif Evaluate kidney autotransplantation (KAT) and ileal ureter substitution (IUS) practice and outcome as alternatives to indwelling ureteral stents for the management of long ureteral stenosis (US). Material We included all patients treated for US with KAT or IUS in 5 French university urology centers between 2010 and 2018. We excluded US due to urothelial carcinoma. Primary endpoint was the preservation of ipsilateral kidney and renal function without any urinary diversion. Results 22 patients were treated with KAT (n = 8, 36.4%) and IUS (n = 14, 63.6%). Mean US length was 4.6 cm and 6 cm (P = 0.52) in KAT and IUS groups respectively. US etiologies were lithiasis, iatrogenic, retroperitoneal fibrosis or extrinsic compression. US level was varied. The surgery was described as difficult because of peritoneal adhesions or major peri-ureteral fibrosis. Mean operating time and hospital stay were 336 and 346 minutes (P = 0.87) and 8 and 15 days respectively (P = 0.001). Postoperative complications were mostly Clavien ≤ 2 (n = 17, 77.3%). Revision surgery was required in the KAT group in 3 cases (37.5%), for textiles, renal vein thrombosis and anastomotic leak, none in the IUS group. The mean follow-up was 15.7 months. All but one (in the KAT group) ipsilateral kidneys were preserved, without renal function impairment (Δcreat +2.1 vs. +2.4 μmol/l respectively, P = 0.67), nor urinary diversion. Conclusion KAT and IUS are safe alternatives whose indication depends on surgeons expertise. Our study pointed out the scarcity of this practice suggesting the need to refer patients to expert centers. Level of evidence 3.

12. Bioavailable iron titrations reveal oceanic Synechococcus ecotypes optimized for different iron availabilities

Abstract

The trace metal iron (Fe) controls the diversity and activity of phytoplankton across the surface oceans, a paradigm established through decades of in situ and mesocosm experimental studies. Despite widespread Fe-limitation within high-nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) waters, significant contributions of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus to the phytoplankton stock can be found. Correlations among differing strains of Synechococcus across different Fe-regimes have suggested the existence of Fe-adapted ecotypes. However, experimental evidence of high- versus low-Fe adapted strains of Synechococcus is lacking, and so we investigated the transcriptional responses of microbial communities inhabiting the HNLC, sub-Antarctic region of the Southern Ocean during the Spring of 2018. Analysis of metatranscriptomes generated from on-deck incubation experiments reflecting a gradient of Fe-availabilities reveal transcriptomic signatures indicative of co-occurring Synechococcus ecotypes adapted to differing Fe-regimes. Functional analyses comparing low-Fe and high-Fe conditions point to various Fe-acquisition mechanisms that may allow persistence of low-Fe adapted Synechococcus under Fe-limitation. Comparison of in situ surface conditions to the Fe-titrations indicate ecological relevance of these mechanisms as well as persistence of both putative ecotypes within this region. This Fe-titration approach, combined with transcriptomics, highlights the short-term responses of the in situ phytoplankton community to Fe-availability that are often overlooked by examining genomic content or bulk physiological responses alone. These findings expand our knowledge about how phytoplankton in HNLC Southern Ocean waters adapt and respond to changing Fe supply.

13. LINFOMA DE HODGKIN REFRATÁRIO EM ADOLESCENTE: UM RELATO DE CASO

Abstract

Relato de caso de paciente adolescente com linfoma de Hodgkin clássico refratário, cujo diagnóstico inicial foi sugerido por imunofenotipagem de líquido pleural. Relato de caso: D. G. N., 16 anos, foi admitida no Hospital Federal da Lagoa em 15/07/2023 com quadro de febre, dispneia e massa mediastinal. Realizada tomografia de tórax que mostrou “formação expansiva de contornos lobulados e limites imprecisos com epicentro no mediastino anterior, medindo cerca de 17 × 22 × 13 cm (L × AP × T) (…) com compressão do brônquio-fonte direito e do tronco venoso braquiocefálico (…) e derrame pleural à direita”. Devido à extensão da massa e risco de compressão de vias áreas por sedação, realizou-se imunofenotipagem do líquido pleural pelo laboratório do Instituto de Puericultura e Pediatria Martagão Gesteira do 15/07/2023, que demonstrou infiltração de células com fenótipo sugestivo de Linfoma de Hodgkin. O Serviço optou pelo início de quimioterapia com ABVD - doxorrubicina, bleomicina, vimblastina, dacarbazina - em 18/07/2023, realizando 6 ciclos terminados em 21/12/2023. Realizou nova tomografia de tórax de controle em 21/02/2024, sem melhora da massa. Após discussão em equipe, foi optado por novo resgate com quimioterapia, utilizando gemcitabina, dexametasona e carboplatina (protocolo r-GDP), devido a sua menor toxicidade. Paciente não respondeu a 2 ciclos do protocolo, assim prosseguiu-se à confirmação diagnóstica por Radiointervenção, e paciente foi transferida para setor de radiointervenção do Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho para tentativa de acessar massa mediastinal de forma mais segura. Após estudo histopatológico, confirmado o diagnóstico de linfoma de Hodgkin esclerose nodular em 16/06/2024. Discussão: O linfoma de Hodgkin é uma neoplasia oncohematológicarelativamente rara na infância e adolescência, correspondendo a 7% do câncer pediátrico, mais comum em meninas de 15-19 anos. A clínica mais comum nos casos pediátricos consiste em linfonodomegalia, sintomas B (febre maior de 38oC, fatiga e perda ponderal) e massa mediastinal. O diagnóstico é classicamente realizado pela análise histopatológica de biópsia de massa ou linfonodo suspeito, com demonstração das clássicas células de Reed-Sternberg. A imunofenotipagem demonstra expressão de CD30. A análise inicial do líquido pleural possibilitou a identificação de células fenotipicamente compatíveis com Hodgkin clássico, CD30 positivas. Todavia, esse método ainda não é considerado diagnóstico pela literatura. Atualmente, foi iniciado tratamento com brentuximabe para a paciente, como terapia monoclonal específica anti-CD30. O brentuximabe é um tratamento aprovado para pacientes portadores de linfoma de Hodgkin clássico refratário a pelo menos 2 esquemas quimioterápicos diferentes. Conclusão: O presente caso mostra-se um desafio diagnóstico inicial, pelo risco inerente à realização da biópsia da massa, único método atualmente reconhecido como padrão-ouro para o diagnóstico de linfoma de Hodgkin. A possibilidade de realização da imunofenotipagem de um material cujo obtenção é menos invasiva pode representar novas maneiras de se obter o diagnóstico de forma menos danosa ao paciente, no futuro. Ademais, o uso pediátrico do brentuximabe ainda é insipiente, sendo sua aprovação pelo Food and Drug Administration recente, datando novembro de 2022. Assim, seu emprego pode representar um avanço no tratamento de linfomas refratários.

14. Activation immédiate des implants cochléaires : étude préliminaire

Abstract

Resume But Evaluer la faisabilite d’une activation immediate des implants cochleaires. Materiel et methodes Etude retrospective (resultats audiometriques a 6 mois de l’intervention, donnees des reglages et apparition de complications) comparant, en utilisant le test statistique de Student, un groupe de 19 patients beneficiant d’une activation precoce a J1 postoperatoire (groupe AI) et un groupe AC de 10 patients ayant eu une activation classique a J15 postoperatoire. Resultats Les niveaux de comprehension vocale a 60 dB, 6 mois apres l’intervention, ont ete compares (p > 0,05). Le groupe AI retrouve une moyenne de 61,58 % de comprehension des mots dissyllabiques des listes de Fournier a 60 dB contre 71 % dans le groupe AC. La moyenne des seuils d’intelligibilite retrouvee pour 50 % de mots compris sont respectivement de 39,74 dB et 36,5 dB pour le groupe AI et le groupe AC (p > 0,05). Les performances audiometriques a 6 mois de l’intervention ne sont pas affectees par une activation immediate du processeur de l’implant cochleaire. Un patient du groupe AI a du etre active 1 mois apres l’intervention a cause d’un hematome entre les parties externe et interne de l’implant. Aucune autre complication n’a ete notee. Les niveaux de reglages « C » a 1 mois ont ete compares pour le groupe AI aux niveaux NRT peroperatoires qui sont pratiquement atteints, confirmant une stabilisation des reglages. Le nombre de reglages realises durant la premiere annee etait en moyenne de 6,05 dans le groupe AI contre 6,55 dans le groupe AC (p > 0,05). Conclusion En prenant quelques precautions de suivi, l’activation immediate des implants cochleaires est possible et n’affecte pas les resultats audiometriques des patients.

Abstract

Objective To assess the feasibility of immediate activation of cochlear implants. Material and methods A retrospective study compared speech audiometry results at 6 months post-implantation, implant fitting data and complications, on Student test, between 19 patients receiving day-1 implant activation (immediate activation: IA) and 10 patients with activation at 2 weeks (classical activation: CA). Results Mean speech comprehension, using Fournier bisyllabic word lists at 60 dB 6 months after implantation, was 61.58% in IA and 71% in CA (P > 0.05). Mean intelligibility thresholds for 50% word-recognition were respectively 39.74 dB and 36.5 dB (P > 0.05). Speech audiometry results at 6 months were not affected by immediate versus classical activation. Comfort-level settings at 1 month in IA were not significantly different (Student test: P > 005) from intraoperative neural response thresholds: i.e., were practically stable. One IA patient required delayed activation at 1 month because of hematoma interfering between the external and internal parts of the implant. There were no other complications. The mean number of fitting sessions during the first year was 6.05 in the IA group and 6.55 in the CA group (P > 0.05). Conclusion Given certain precautions during follow-up, immediate activation after cochlear implantation was feasible, and did not impair audiometric results.

16. Multilevel modeling in food science: A case study on heat-induced ascorbic acid degradation kinetics

Abstract

Characterization of variation of experimental results is achieved by repeating experiments. Frequently, results are averaged before data are analysed but that may not be the best practice because valuable information is then lost. Three other ways to analyze repetitions are: (1) each experiment is analyzed on its own (no pooling of data), (2) all experiments are analyzed together in one go (complete pooling), (3) data are analyzed together while allowing for similarities as well as differences in the result (partial pooling). Multilevel modeling uses partial pooling by partitioning variance over more than one level. Level 1 consists of the measurements themselves; higher levels consist of groups or clusters of measurements (repetitions, experiments at various temperatures, at various pH values, etc.) and parameters are analyzed both at the population and at the group/cluster level. The approach is applied to a case study in which heat-induced isothermal degradation of ascorbic acid was studied with 15 repetitions in an aqueous solution, making it a two-level study. The data were analyzed using averaging and complete pooling, complete pooling without averaging, no-pooling at all, and partial pooling. The kinetic model was established by letting the data decide about the order of the reaction, while this was compared to a model where the order was fixed at 1 (first-order model). Results show that both averaging with complete pooling, as well as complete pooling without averaging, strongly underestimate variation. The no-pooling technique overestimates variation, while partial pooling partitions variation over the levels and thus gives a better impression of the variation involved. The kinetics of ascorbic acid appear to be subject to strong variation when each experiment is considered separately because it is a compound that is very sensitive to all kinds of experimental conditions. With multilevel modeling it appeared to be possible to characterize the uncertainties involved much better than with single level modeling. A Bayesian analysis was performed, in which parameters are allowed to be variable, which is useful because multilevel modeling leads to characterization of variation of parameters. The Bayesian method allows to visualize the posterior distribution of parameters, thereby giving more insight in their behaviour. Also, a Bayesian analysis focuses more strongly on predictive accuracy of models, including multilevel models. The predictive accuracy of 4 models describing the same ascorbic acid data was compared and the multilevel model with reaction order estimated from the data performed by far the best in this regard. The pros and cons of multilevel modeling are discussed and it is concluded that multilevel modeling is to be preferred whenever the data allow to perform such an analysis.

Abstract

Background Maintenance ART with dolutegravir-based dual regimens have proved their efficacy among HIV-1-infected subjects in randomized trials. However, real-life data are scarce, with limited populations and follow-up. Objectives We assessed virological failure (VF) and resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) on dolutegravir maintenance regimens in combination with rilpivirine or with lamivudine or emtricitabine (xTC) and analysed the factors associated with VF. Methods Between 2014 and 2018, all HIV-1-infected adults included in the Dat’AIDS cohort and starting dolutegravir/rilpivirine or dolutegravir/xTC as a maintenance dolutegravir-based dual regimen were selected. VF was defined as two consecutive HIV RNA values >50 copies/mL or a single value >400 copies/mL. We compared cumulative genotypes before initiation of a maintenance dolutegravir-based dual regimen with genotype at VF. Results We analysed 1374 subjects (799 on dolutegravir/rilpivirine and 575 on dolutegravir/xTC) with a median follow-up of 20 months (IQR = 11–31) and 19 months (IQR = 11–31), respectively. VF occurred in 3.8% (n = 30) of dolutegravir/rilpivirine subjects and 2.6% (n = 15) of dolutegravir/xTC subjects. Among subjects receiving dolutegravir/rilpivirine, two genotypes harboured emerging RAMs at VF: E138K on NNRTI (n = 1); and E138K+K101E on NNRTI and N155H on INSTI (n = 1). Among subjects receiving dolutegravir/xTC, no new RAM was detected. The only predictive factor of VF on dolutegravir/rilpivirine was the history of failure on an NNRTI-based regimen (adjusted HR = 2.97, 95% CI = 1.28–6.93). No factor was associated with VF on dolutegravir/xTC. Conclusions In this large real-life cohort, dolutegravir/rilpivirine and dolutegravir/xTC sustained virological suppression and were associated with a low rate of VF and RAM emergence. Careful virological screening is essential before switching to dolutegravir/rilpivirine in virologically suppressed patients with a history of NNRTI therapy.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Concurrent chemotherapy and thoracic radiotherapy followed by prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) is the standard treatment in limited-disease small-cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC), with 5-year overall survival (OS) of only 25% to 33%. PATIENTS AND METHODS: STIMULI is a 1:1 randomised phase II trial aiming to demonstrate superiority of consolidation combination immunotherapy versus observation after chemo-radiotherapy plus PCI (protocol amendment-1). Consolidation immunotherapy consisted of four cycles of nivolumab [1 mg/kg, every three weeks (Q3W)] plus ipilimumab (3 mg/kg, Q3W), followed by nivolumab monotherapy (240 mg, Q2W) for up to 12 months. Patient recruitment closed prematurely due to slow accrual and the statistical analyses plan was updated to address progression-free survival (PFS) as the only primary endpoint. RESULTS: Of the 222 patients enrolled, 153 were randomised (78: experimental; 75: observation). Among the randomised patients, median age was 62 years, 60% males, 34%/65% current/former smokers, 31%/66% performance status (PS) 0/1. Up to 25 May 2020 (median follow-up 22.4 months), 40 PFS events were observed in the experimental arm, with median PFS 10.7 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 7.0-not estimable (NE)] versus 42 events and median 14.5 months (8.2-NE) in the observation, hazard ratio (HR)= 1.02 (0.66-1.58), two-sided P= 0.93. With updated follow-up (03 June 2021; median: 35 months), median OS was not reached in the experimental arm, while it was 32.1 months (26.1-NE) in observation, with HR= 0.95 (0.59-1.52), P= 0.82. In the experimental arm, median time-to-treatment-discontinuation was only 1.7 months. CTCAE v4 grade =3 adverse events were experienced by 62% of patients in the experimental and 25% in the observation arm, with 4 and 1 fatal, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The STIMULI trial did not meet its primary endpoint of improving PFS with nivolumab-ipilimumab consolidation after chemo-radiotherapy in LD-SCLC. A short period on active treatment related to toxicity and treatment discontinuation likely affected the efficacy results.

Abstract

Surface metrology plays a key role in many technological and scientific applications, such as manufacturing or material science, where optical methods are generally preferred since they are contactless, non-destructive and faster in comparison to their contact counterparts. In particular, interferometric methods usually perform spatial scanning and induce controlled phase delays using mechanical moving parts, which can cause instabilities on the system, therefore, affecting its performance. Here we put forward an alternative method in which we use a common-path interferometer and a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) to scan the sample and introduce phase delays, making the system completely digital. We first applied our approach to artificial samples with diverse topographies, and then to real samples with a sharp change in height, obtaining very good correlations between the measured and reference surfaces in both cases. We expect our work to be of interest to the optical metrology community, particularly those working on surface profilometry.

Abstract

Understanding the mechanisms leading to the multitude of newly-formed compounds generated during the thermal processing of food is important for the reasoned construction of quality. Thanks to a solid food model with a structure and technological history comparable to that of a real sponge cake and containing only known amounts of precursors (glucose with or without leucine), an adapted reaction scheme unravelling Maillard and caramelization reactions was built and then compared to experimental kinetic data measured on numerous reaction markers (precursors, α-dicarbonyl intermediates and furanic compounds). For caramelization, this study showed that glucose mainly formed 1,2-enediol and then fructose rather than glucosone and glyoxal. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural started to form when there were sufficient quantities of fructose, and 3,4-dideoxyoglucosone was not generated until after this step. Furfural was mainly formed via 3-deoxyglucosone. The involvement of leucine tended to accelerate the breakdown of sugars as more degradation pathways (via enaminols) were added.

Abstract

Computational challenges associated with the use of Wigner functions to identify non-classical properties of states are addressed with the aid of generating functions. It allows the computation of the Wigner functions of photon-subtracted states for an arbitrary number of subtracted photons. Both the formal definition of photon-subtracted states in terms of ladder operators and the experimental implementation with heralded photon detections are analyzed. These techniques are demonstrated by considering photon subtraction from squeezed thermal states as well as squeezed Fock states. Generating functions are also used for the photon statistics of these states. 26. [The BSE2 scale : A new clinical tool for the diagnostic of ASD within NDDs]

Abstract

The behavioral summarized evaluation scales, the BSE and its revised version the BSE-R, were developed and validated in the 1980-1990s. The BSE-R is still used daily by clinical teams in France and foreign countries, and it is recommended by the French Health Authority (2018). Having taken into account knowledge improvement in neurodevelopment and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the importance of observation by relatives in ecological context, the second version of the BSE was developed. This paper presents the construction and the validation study of the second version of the behavioral summarized evaluation scale, the BSE2 and the BSE2-P rated by parents.Construct validity of the BSE2 scale has been studied in a population of 244 children and adolescents with ASD according to DSM-5 criteria, aged from 30 months to 18 years. Discriminant validity has been analyzed using a population of 86 patients of the same age, with neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) without comorbidity of ASD.BSE2 comprises 30 items and is a two-dimensional scale as was BSE-R. Both dimensions, labelled "Interaction" (11 items) and "Modulation" (11 items), accounted for 41.7 % of the total variance. They describe autism severity and are in accordance with the two DSM-5 dimensions. Internal consistency (0.927 and 0.850 respectively) and inter-rater reliability (0.932 and 0.897 respectively) are good or excellent for both dimensions. Sensibility and specificity (0.758 and 0.767 respectively) range BSE2 among the tools with good psychometric properties. The parent version, BSE2-P, dedicated to ecological context is easily rated by parents.BSE2 scale for children and adolescents is a clinical tool with good psychometric properties. Its two-dimensional structure is in accordance with DSM-5 criteria. This scale covers all spectrum of ASD clinical forms in both children and adolescents. It can be used to identify ASD in complex neurodevelopmental disorders with several comorbidities and can help to distinguish autism symptomatology from other neurodevelopmental diagnoses. Furthermore, this scale allows to expand the rating context, involving parents to define and adjust the individualized therapeutic project. Thus the BSE2 is a valuable clinical tool for practitioners for both diagnosis and follow-up.

Abstract

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

Abstract

A detailed analysis of the stimulated parametric down-conversion (PDC) process is performed to investigate the effects of the spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. The analysis provides information that would be useful for PDC-based metrology applications. Using a Wigner functional approach, we obtain the parametric down-converted state as the Bogoliubov transformed input state, in terms of Bogoliubov kernel functions. Abstract

Introduction Le tedizolide est un antibiotique de la famille des oxazolidinones, semblant presenter un meilleur profil de securite hematologique et neurologique a long terme que le linezolide, et restant actif contre les bacteries multiresistantes (BMR) a Gram-positif. Par consequent, il pourrait representer une option comme traitement antimicrobien suppressif (TAS) chez les patients souffrant d’une infection osteo-articulaire (IOA) complexe sur implant a BMR a Gram-positif. Materiels et methodes Nous avons realise une etude de cohorte entre 2017 et 2020 afin d’evaluer la securite a long terme du tedizolide en tant que TAS chez les patients presentant une IOA associee a un implant. Dans tous les cas, l’utilisation du tedizolide a ete validee comme derniere option therapeutique orale lors de reunions multidisciplinaires dans un CRIOAc. Les evenements indesirables graves, les raisons de l’arret du traitement et les donnees biologiques habituelles (hemogramme, ionogramme, bilan hepatique realises au minimum tous les mois) ont ete collectes de maniere prospective. Resultats Dix-sept patients (13 (76 %) hommes; âge median de 73 ans ; IMC moyen de 28,1 ± 5,1 kg/m2) ont recu du tedizolide en tant que TAS pour des infections de prothese (n = 16, dont 10 (59 %) protheses de genou, 5 (29 %) de hanche et une (6 %) d’epaule) ou une infection d’osteosynthese (n = 1). La duree mediane du traitement par tedizolide etait de 6 mois (range 1-31). Les pathogenes impliques etaient principalement des staphylocoques a coagulase negative multi-resistants (n = 16, 80 %), suivis de Corynebacterium striatum (n = 2) et d’Enterococcus faecium resistant a la vancomycine (n = 1). Des co-infections a bacteries a Gram-negatif (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens et Proteus mirabilis) ont ete observees chez 3 patients. La seule raison de l’arret du traitement a ete l’echec de la strategie conservatrice, avec une rechute observee chez 4 patients (23,5 %). Aucun patient n’a developpe d’evenement indesirable grave clinique ou biologique ou n’a vu son traitement par tedizolide interrompu en raison d’un evenement indesirable. Aucun evenement indesirable neurologique n’a par ailleurs ete observe durant le suivi de meme qu’aucune interaction medicamenteuse malgre la co-administration de traitement serotoninergique (anti-depresseur tricyclique (n = 2) et tramadol (n = 4)). Conclusion Le tedizolide semble etre une option sure en tant que TAS chez les patients presentant une IOA complexe associee a un implant due a des bacteries a Gram-positif BMR.

Abstract

BackgroundIntegrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) are increasingly used in patients living with HIV due to their safety, effectiveness and high genetic barrier. However, an association with weight gain has recently been suggested and several cases of diabetes mellitus have been reported with raltegravir and dolutegravir. The long-time metabolic impact of these recent molecules remains unclear.ObjectivesTo assess if an INSTI as a third agent is statistically associated with new-onset diabetes mellitus compared with an NNRTI or a PI.Patients and methodsPatients undergoing first-line combined ART (cART) without diabetes at baseline were retrospectively included from the Dat’AIDS French cohort study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02898987). Incident diabetes mellitus was defined as a notification of new diabetes in the medical history, a glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level superior to 7.5% or the start of a diabetes therapy following the initiation of ART.ResultsFrom 2009 to 2017, 19 462 patients were included, among which 265 cases of diabetes mellitus occurred. Multivariate and survival analyses did not highlight an increase in new-onset diabetes in patients undergoing cART with an INSTI as a third agent compared with an NNRTI or a PI. BMI >30 kg/m2, age >37 years old (in survival analysis), black race or Hispanic ethnicity, arterial hypertension and AIDS were associated with a higher proportion of incident diabetes.ConclusionsINSTIs were not statistically associated with new-onset diabetes. However, clinicians should remain aware of this possible metabolic comorbidity, particularly in patients with a high BMI and older patients.

Abstract

Cochlear and brainstem implants have been included on the list of reimbursable products (LPPR) in France since March of 2009. The implants were initially inscribed for 5 years, after which an application for renewal with the French National Commission for the Evaluation of Medical Devices and Health Technologies (Commission Nationale d’evaluation des dispositifs medicaux et des technologies de sante – CNEDiMTS) was required [Haute Autorite de sante, 2009]. Upon registration to the list of reimbursable products, the companies and the reference centers for cochlear and brainstem implants were asked to set up a post-registration registry called EPIIC. This article reports the evolution in the EPIIC registry of the general indicators for 5051 patients over the five years from 2012–2016.

Abstract

Assessment of the incidence and results of bilateral cochlear implantation in adults and children in France.Multicenter retrospective study of data in the French national registry of cochlear implantations from January 1st 2012 to December 31st 2016. Functional results from CAP (Category of Auditory Performance) questionnaires and speech audiometry tests, with mono- and di-syllabic word-lists, were compared before and after implantation. Speech audiometry tests were carried out against a noisy background, except before simultaneous implantations.Nine hundred and forty two bilateral cochlear implantations were performed during this period, that is, 16.4% of all cochlear implantations. Five hundred and eighty eight bilateral implantations were performed sequentially. 59% of the bilateral implantations were performed in children. Bilateral implants significantly improved CAP scores in all cases (P0.001). Auditory performance, with the two types of word-list, were significantly improved after simultaneous implantation (P0.01). After sequential implantation, the speech discrimination score, already very good with the first implant, reached 63±26% [0-100] with monosyllabic word lists, and 72±28% [0-100] with dissyllabic words. There were more complications due to surgery in bilateral cases than in the entire population of cochlear recipients (9.1% vs 6.4%, P0.02).Hearing is significantly improved by simultaneous cochlear implantation. For sequential implantation, at one year, when auditory results were already excellent from the first implant, in the bimodal condition CAP scores were significantly improved, although there was no further change in speech audiometry in noise.

Abstract

This study concerns the results of cochlear implantation in children and adults from French cochlear implantation centers, monitored at one, two and three years by the Cochlear Implant French Registry EPIIC. This multicenter study enrolled 2603 subjects (1667 adults and 936 children) implanted in one ear. The following parameters were studied: hearing overall performances, monosyllabic or dissyllabic word perception, speech intelligibility, self-assessment questionnaire of Cochlear Implant (CI) benefits (Abbreviated profile of Hearing aid Benefit); professional activity and schooling. This study confirms the ceiling effect in adults’ performances after the 1st year and the progressive growth in children's performances. It also shows that the contralateral hearing aid enhances performances compared to the CI alone condition, in all follow-up sessions. The French register of CIs is the only worldwide register of systematic follow-up on a period of three years and more of all adults and children implanted in a country. 137;Supplement 1

Abstract

Objectives :To analyze the performance of cochlear implants in French patients aged 65 and over, implanted between 2012 and 2016, using data from the French national registry for cochlear implants (EPIIC). Materials and methods : The French national registry incorporates patient data from before implantation and for three years after implantation, stratified in different age groups (18–39, 40–64 years, 65–74 years and > 75 years). Here, we assessed the latter two categories. Hearing was assessed using mono- and disyllabic words in a silent background. The Category of Auditory Performance (CAP) scale was also implemented and subjects took the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (Aphab) questionnaire. Results : The population aged over 65 accounted for 38% (n = 1193) of the 3178 adult implanted patients. The performance for mono- and disyllabic words in silence, the CAP scores and the APHAB questionnaire answers for ease of communication, background noise and reverberation were dramatically improved at one year post-implantation (P < 0.0001 for each score) and remained stable between one and three years thereafter. The percentage improvement was similar across all age groups. The scores for loud-noise intolerance did not change after cochlear implantation in any age group. Conclusion : Cochlear implants improve hearing and communication in subjects aged 65 and over, with comparable efficiency to that achieved in younger subjects. Cochlear implantation should thus be proposed whenever hearing aids provide only limited benefit. However, between 2012 and 2016, cochlear implantation was given to less than 1% of the French population aged 65 and over with profound deafness.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the frequency and causes of cochlear explants with re-implantation (ERI) after 5 years’ follow up of the patients included in the French national EPIIC (étude post-inscription des implants cochléaires) registry tracking patients with cochlear implantation. This multicenter, descriptive prospective study was conducted on 5051 patients enrolled in the EPIIC database between January 2012 and December 2016. Ninety-five patients (1.9%) received a primary implant and an ERI during the study. Of these, four benefitted from two ERIs. The number of ERIs was significantly higher in the pediatric population than among adults. The explantation and reimplantation were performed simultaneously in 86% of cases. The reasons for explantation were: in 46.4% of cases linked to a malfunction of the implant, and in 39.3% of cases for medical or surgical reasons. The number of electrodes inserted was significantly higher after the ERI than after the first implantation. There was just one post-ERI infection for these 95 explanted and re-implanted patients. As well as explantation with reimplantation rarely being necessary, it generally presents no major surgical difficulty and in most cases it allows a better integration than in the first implantation. 137;Supplement 1

Abstract

Objective Multi-centre study of the National French Registry (EPIIC) of patients with cochlear implants, focusing on infants who were operated-on under the age of 24 months between 2012 and 2016. Patients and methods A total of 615 profoundly deaf infants, who received cochlear implants (CIs) before their second birthday, were included in the registry by different CI centers. Epidemiological, surgical, speech therapy and school, follow-up data were included in the registry, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months thereafter. The following parameters were studied: type of implantation (uni- or bilateral), complications, cause of deafness, category of auditory perception (CAP), Open-set word recognition score (OSW), speech intelligibility rating, lexical comprehension with EVIP (Peabody), communication mode and type of schooling. Bilateral simultaneous CI (BiCI) and unilateral CI (UniCI) groups were compared. Results There were 744 implantations. The explantation-reimplantation rate, within the four-year follow-up, was just 3.6%. Mean implantation age was 16.0 months, and similar in the two groups (BiCI/UniCI). A total of 51% of children had their first implant between 12 and 18 months, and 15% before 12 months. Implantation was unilateral in 52% of cases. Fifty-six percent of the bilateral procedures were sequential, with a mean delay of 16.8 months for the second implantation. The cause of deafness was unknown in 52% of cases. Of the 48% (297/615) of attributed cases, 32% had clear genetic causes. The remaining deafness was due to cytomegalovirus (CMV, 8%), inner-ear malformation (5%) and meningitis (3%). The main complications were from infections (47%) and internal device failure (25%). Four years post-operation, 84% of the UniCI and 75% of BiCl groups had a CAP ≥ 5, and 83% of UniCl and 100% BiCI had OSW ≥ 80%. Furthermore 74% of UniCI and 77% of BiCI communicated orally and 85% of UniCI and 90% of BiCI integrated into mainstream schooling. Conclusion The French Registry of cochlear implants (EPIIC) is the only such national registry in the world. Our analysis illustrates the immediate benefits of, either single or double, cochlear implantation for language, perception skills and schooling.

Abstract

Evaluate in France the outcomes of cochlear implantation outside the selection criteria, off-label.This is a prospective cohort study including adults and children having received a cochlear implant (CI) in an off-label indication, that is outside the criteria established by the "Haute Autorité de santé (HAS)" in 2012. The data was collected from the "EPIIC" registry on recipients who received CIs in France between 2011 and 2014. Speech audiometry was performed at 60dB preimplantation and after one year of CI use, as well as an evaluation of the scores of the quality of life with the APHAB questionnaire, the scores for CAP and the professional/academic status in pre- and post-implantation conditions. Major and minor complications at surgery have been recorded.In total, 590 patients (447 adults and 143 children) with an off-label indication for CIs were included in this study from the EPIIC registry (11.7% of the whole cohort of EPIIC). For adults, the median percentage of comprehension using monosyllabic word lists was 41% in preimplantation condition versus 53% after one year of CI use (P0.001) and 60% versus 71% in dissyllabic word lists (P0.001). The CAP scores were 5 versus 6 in pre- and post-implantation conditions respectively (P0.001) and the APHAB scores were statistically lower after implantation (P0.001). In the children cohort, the median percentage of comprehension using monosyllabic word lists was 51% in preimplantation condition and 65% after CI (P0.001), and 48% versus 82% (P0.001) for dissyllabic word lists. The CAP scores were 5 versus 7 respectively in pre- and post-CI conditions (P0.001). Thirty-two minor complications (5.4%) and 17 major complications (2.8%) were reported in our panel of off-label indication patients.These results suggest that a revision of the cochlear implantation candidacy criteria is necessary to allow more patients with severe or asymmetric hearing loss to benefit from a CI when there is an impact on quality of life despite the use of an optimal hearing aid.

Abstract

BackgroundWhilst there are a number of publications comparing the relationship between body mass index (BMI) of kidney transplant recipients and graft/patient survival, no study has assessed this for a French patient cohort.MethodsIn this study, cause-specific Cox models were used to study patient and graft survival and several other time-to-event measures. Logistic regressions were performed to study surgical complications at 30 days post-transplantation as well as delayed graft function.ResultsAmong the 4691 included patients, 747 patients were considered obese with a BMI level greater than 30 kg/m2. We observed a higher mortality for obese recipients (HR = 1.37,p = 0.0086) and higher risks of serious bacterial infections (HR = 1.24,p = 0.0006) and cardiac complications (HR = 1.45,p p = 0.0666) and no significant increased risk of early surgical complications.ConclusionsWe showed that obesity increased the risk of death and serious bacterial infections and cardiac complications in obese French kidney transplant recipients. Further epidemiologic studies aiming to compare obese recipients versus obese candidates remaining on dialysis are needed to improve the guidelines for obese patient transplant allocation.

Using a perturbative approach, we investigate the parametric down-conversion process without the semi-classical approximation. A Wigner functional formalism, which incorporates both the spatiotemproal degrees of freedom and the particle-number degrees of freedom is used to perform the analysis. First, we derive an evolution equation for the down-conversion process in the nonlinear medium. Then we use the perturbative approach to solve the equation. The leading order contribution is equivalent to the semi-classical solution. We investigate the impact of Hilbert-space truncation upon the entanglement of an initially maximally entangled $m\times m$ bipartite quantum state, after propagation under an entanglement-preserving $n \times n$ ($n\geq m$) unitary. Truncation -- physically enforced, e.g., by a detector's finite cross section -- projects the state onto an $s \times s$-dimensional subspace ($3\leq s \leq n$). Abstract

The amount of entanglement that exists in a parametric down-converted state is investigated in terms of all the degrees of freedom of the state. We quantify the amount of entanglement by the Schmidt number of the state, represented as a pure bipartite state by tagging the down-converted photons in terms of orthogonal states of polarization with the aid of type II phase-matching. To facilitate our calculations, we use a Wigner functional approach, which allows the incorporation of the full infinite dimensional spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. Abstract

South Africa has a long history in quantum research with an explosion of activity in the recent decade. Bolstered by this momentum, in March 2021, the South African Quantum Technologies Initiative (SA QuTI) was formally launched by the South African Department of Science and Innovation with the first seed funding released in September 2021. SA QuTI puts quantum technology firmly on the national agenda with ambitious aims for a quantum industry in South Africa. Here, the authors report this to the international quantum community and share their perspectives on what this means for South Africa's quantum future.

Abstract

High-dimensional entanglement with spatial modes of light promises increased security and information capacity over quantum channels. Unfortunately, entanglement decays due to perturbations, corrupting quantum links that cannot be repaired without performing quantum tomography on the channel. Paradoxically, the channel tomography itself is not possible without a working link. Here we overcome this problem with a robust approach to characterize quantum channels by means of classical light. Using free-space communication in a turbulent atmosphere as an example, we show that the state evolution of classically entangled degrees of freedom is equivalent to that of quantum entangled photons, thus providing new physical insights into the notion of classical entanglement. The analysis of quantum channels by means of classical light in real time unravels stochastic dynamics in terms of pure state trajectories, and thus enables precise quantum error correction in short- and long-haul optical communication, in both free space and fibre. Classical light is as good as quantum light to characterize a quantum channel. This unexpected result has practical consequences that make an experimentalist’s life easier in some situations.

Abstract

Introduction La detection du SARS-CoV-2 dans la maladie a coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) repose sur un test par RT-PCR effectue a partir d’un ecouvillon oro- ou nasopharynge (ENP). Nous rapportons ici le cas d’un patient contact de sujets confirmes au sein du cluster des Contamines-Montjoie, Haute Savoie, qui a developpe au cours de son suivi une pneumonie associee au SARS-Cov-2 diagnostiquee par une aspiration endotracheale (AET) testee positive alors que l’ensemble des ENPs realises sont restes negatifs. Materiels et methodes Les caracteristiques cliniques du patient ont ete suivies quotidiennement pendant la quarantaine dans un hopital tertiaire francais. Le diagnostic du SARS-Cov-2 etait base sur un test par RT-PCR developpe par le Centre National de Reference pour les virus respiratoires ciblant le gene RdRp. D’autres pathogenes pulmonaires ont ete recherches en utilisant un FilmArray® RP2 + (BioFire Diagnostics, SLC, Etats-Unis). Resultats Un homme de 53 ans avec pour seul antecedent une dyslipidemie traitee a ete hospitalise pour une mise en quarantaine apres avoir ete en contact avec des cas confirmes de COVID-19. A l’admission, le patient etait asymptomatique et l’ecouvillon nasopharynge etait negatif pour la detection du SARS-CoV-2. Au jour 5, il a presente une fievre isolee (38,1 °C), sans signe d’infection des voies respiratoires hautes ou basses. La radiographie thoracique realisee au jour 6 montrait un discret syndrome interstitiel bilateral bi-basal. Une tomodensitometrie thoracique realisee au jour 7 montrait des images eparses en verre depoli de localisation peripherique au niveau du lobe inferieur gauche et du lobe moyen. Au niveau biologique, la seule anomalie identifiee etait un minime syndrome inflammatoire (proteine C reactive a 12 mg/L). La fievre a persiste 3 jours avec un maximum mesure a 38,5 °C. Les autres parametres cliniques - dont la SpO2 - sont restes normaux, sans survenue d’autre symptome jusqu’au jour 9, ou le patient a presente une toux seche associee a une rhinorrhee. Une AET a ete realisee au jour 8 et est revenue positive pour le SARS-CoV-2. Ce resultat a ete confirme par un crachat induit le jour 9, tandis que l’ENP est demeure toujours negatif. La recherche d’autres pathogenes respiratoires etait negative (ENP et AET). Le suivi clinique de ce cas est toujours en cours. Conclusion Il s’agit de la premiere description de resultats dissocies entre un ENP negatif de maniere persistante et une AET positive chez un patient atteint d’une pneumonie liee au SARS-CoV-2. Cette observation suggere que pour les patients a haut risque de COVID-19, meme des symptomes benins (comme un febricule isole) devraient inciter les cliniciens a effectuer une tomodensitometrie thoracique et un prelevement des voies respiratoires inferieures pour depister l’infection.

49. Deux cas d’hémophilie A acquise associée à une pemphigoïde bulleuse traitée par omalizumab : coïncidence ou effet secondaire ?

Abstract

Introduction L’association d’une hemophilie A acquise (HAA) a une pemphigoide bulleuse (PB) est une situation classique mais rare. Nous rapportons 2 cas d’HAA survenus au decours d’un traitement par omalizumab pour une PB corticoresistante. Observations Une patiente de 88 ans presentait une PB s’aggravant malgre une association de corticotherapie orale et locale forte, conduisant a introduire du mycophenolate et des IGIV a S3, puis a realiser une injection d’omalizumab 600 mg a S5 (IgE a 1100 kU/L), suivie d’une amelioration spectaculaire. Elle developpait a S9 une volumineuse bulle hemorragique de la luette, d’evolution spontanement favorable, conduisant a decouvrir une HAA (bilan de coagulation normal a l’admission). La poursuite du mycophenolate etait associee a une normalisation du taux de facteur VIII, l’omalizumab etant par ailleurs poursuivi de facon mensuelle pour un total de 5 injections. Un patient de 64 ans recevait a S4 et a S7 de son admission une injection d’omalizumab 600 mg pour une PB d’aggravation rapide et corticoresistante (IgE a 1944 kU/L), suivie d’une franche amelioration. Il developpait a S7 une volumineuse bulle hemorragique pharyngee posterieure, conduisant a mettre en evidence une HAA (bilan de coagulation normal a l’admission). Un traitement par azathioprine etait debute, mais rapidement arrete, ainsi que la corticotherapie orale, du fait d’une endocardite infectieuse avec sepsis severe. Du mycophenolate debute apres la fin de l’antibiotherapie maintenait le controle cutane et permettait un controle partiel de l’HAA (diminution importante du taux de l’inhibiteur du facteur VIII, absence de nouvelle manifestation hemorragique). Discussion Bien que classique, l’association d’une HAA a une PB est rare puisque seulement une trentaine de cas ont ete publies. La survenue de ce tableau clinicobiologique rare nous a conduit a nous interroger sur le role inducteur eventuel de l’omalizumab, qui reste un traitement d’exception dans la PB. C’est la raison pour laquelle ce traitement n’a pas ete renouvele chez le second patient. En effet, le bilan de coagulation d’entree etait normal pour les 2 patients. L’autre hypothese serait la coincidence avec des formes particulierement severes de PB, qui dans les 2 cas ont presente de fortes poussees evolutives en cours d’hospitalisation, severite ayant justifie le recours a l’omalizumab. Une analyse de pharmacovigilance a ete faite pour ces 2 cas trouvant 8 observations similaires chez des patients traites pour asthme. Ce signal est en cours d’evaluation au niveau europeen. Conclusion Ces 2 observations ne permettent pas d’etablir un lien de causalite entre l’omalizumab et le developpement d’une HAA. Neanmoins, il convient sans doute de realiser un bilan d’hemostase de facon systematique avant l’introduction de ce traitement dans le cadre d’une PB, pour documenter d’eventuels cas ulterieurs.

Abstract

Compressive sensing is used to perform high-dimensional quantum channel estimation with classical light. As an example, we perform a numerical simulation for the case of a three-dimensional classically non-separable state that is propagated through atmospheric turbulence. Using singular value thresholding algorithm based compressive sensing, we determine the channel matrix, which we subsequently use to correct for the atmospheric turbulence induced distortions. As a measure of the success of the procedure, we calculate the fidelity and the trace distance of the corrected density matrix with respect to the input state, and compare the results with those of the density matrix for the uncorrected state. Furthermore, we quantify the amount of classical non-separability in the density matrix of the corrected state by calculating its negativity. The results show that compressive sensing could contribute in the development and implementation of free-space quantum and optical communication systems., 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in PRA
