Abstract: Modelling uncertainties at small scales, i.e. high $k$ in the power spectrum $P(k)$, due to baryonic feedback, nonlinear structure growth and the fact that galaxies are biased tracers poses a significant obstacle to fully leverage the constraining power of the Euclid wide-field survey. $k$-cut cosmic shear has recently been proposed as a method to optimally remove sensitivity to these scales while preserving usable information. In this paper we generalise the $k$-cut cosmic shear formalism to $3 \times 2$ point statistics and estimate the loss of information for different $k$-cuts in a $3 \times 2$ point analysis of the {\it Euclid} data. Extending the Fisher matrix analysis of Euclid Collaboration: Blanchard et al. (2019), we assess the degradation in constraining power for different $k$-cuts. We find that taking a $k$-cut at $2.6 \ h \ {\rm Mpc} ^{-1}$ yields a dark energy Figure of Merit (FOM) of 1018. This is comparable to taking a weak lensing cut at $\ell = 5000$ and a galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing cut at $\ell = 3000$ in a traditional $3 \times 2$ point analysis. We also find that the fraction of the observed galaxies used in the photometric clustering part of the analysis is one of the main drivers of the FOM. Removing $50 \% \ (90 \%)$ of the clustering galaxies decreases the FOM by $19 \% \ (62 \%)$. Given that the FOM depends so heavily on the fraction of galaxies used in the clustering analysis, extensive efforts should be made to handle the real-world systematics present when extending the analysis beyond the luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample. Abstract: International audience; In June 2012, Euclid, ESA's Cosmology mission was approved for implementation. Afterwards the industrial contracts were signed for the payload module and the spacecraft prime, and the mission requirements consolidated. We present the status of the mission in the light of the design solutions adopted by the contractors. The performances of the spacecraft in its operation, the telescope assembly, the scientific instruments as well as the data-processing have been carefully budgeted to meet the demanding scientific requirements. We give an overview of the system and where necessary the key items for the interfaces between the subsystems.

Abstract: Ilbert, O., et al. (Euclid Collaboration), The analysis of weak gravitational lensing in wide-field imaging surveys is considered to be a major cosmological probe of dark energy. Our capacity to constrain the dark energy equation of state relies on an accurate knowledge of the galaxy mean redshift ⟨ z⟩. We investigate the possibility of measuring ⟨ z»with an accuracy better than 0.002(1 + z) in ten tomographic bins spanning the redshift interval 0.2 99.8%. The zPDF approach can also be successful if the zPDF is de-biased using a spectroscopic training sample. This approach requires deep imaging data but is weakly sensitive to spectroscopic redshift failures in the training sample. We improve the de-biasing method and confirm our finding by applying it to real-world weak-lensing datasets (COSMOS and KiDS+VIKING-450)., H. Abstract: Modelling uncertainties at small scales, i.e. high $k$ in the power spectrum $P(k)$, due to baryonic feedback, nonlinear structure growth and the fact that galaxies are biased tracers poses a significant obstacle to fully leverage the constraining power of the {\it Euclid} wide-field survey. $k$-cut cosmic shear has recently been proposed as a method to optimally remove sensitivity to these scales while preserving usable information. In this paper we generalise the $k$-cut cosmic shear formalism to $3 \times 2$ point statistics and estimate the loss of information for different $k$-cuts in a $3 \times 2$ point analysis of the {\it Euclid} data. Extending the Fisher matrix analysis of~\citet{blanchard2019euclid}, we assess the degradation in constraining power for different $k$-cuts. We work in the idealised case and assume the galaxy bias is linear, the covariance is Gaussian, while neglecting uncertainties due to photo-z errors and baryonic feedback. We find that taking a $k$-cut at $2.6 \ h \ {\rm Mpc} ^{-1}$ yields a dark energy Figure of Merit (FOM) of 1018. This is comparable to taking a weak lensing cut at $\ell = 5000$ and a galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing cut at $\ell = 3000$ in a traditional $3 \times 2$ point analysis. We also find that the fraction of the observed galaxies used in the photometric clustering part of the analysis is one of the main drivers of the FOM. Removing $50 \% \ (90 \%)$ of the clustering galaxies decreases the FOM by $19 \% \ (62 \%)$. Given that the FOM depends so heavily on the fraction of galaxies used in the clustering analysis, extensive efforts should be made to handle the real-world systematics present when extending the analysis beyond the luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample....

Abstract: Aims. The Euclid space telescope will measure the shapes and redshifts of galaxies to reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe and the growth of cosmic structures. The estimation of the expected performance of the experiment, in terms of predicted constraints on cosmological parameters, has so far relied on various individual methodologies and numerical implementations, which were developed for different observational probes and for the combination thereof. In this paper we present validated forecasts, which combine both theoretical and observational ingredients for different cosmological probes. This work is presented to provide the community with reliable numerical codes and methods for Euclid cosmological forecasts. Methods. We describe in detail the methods adopted for Fisher matrix forecasts, which were applied to galaxy clustering, weak lensing, and the combination thereof. We estimated the required accuracy for Euclid forecasts and outline a methodology for their development. We then compare and improve different numerical implementations, reaching uncertainties on the errors of cosmological parameters that are less than the required precision in all cases. Furthermore, we provide details on the validated implementations, some of which are made publicly available, in different programming languages, together with a reference training-set of input and output matrices for a set of specific models. These can be used by the reader to validate their own implementations if required. Results. We present new cosmological forecasts for Euclid. We find that results depend on the specific cosmological model and remaining freedom in each setting, for example flat or non-flat spatial cosmologies, or different cuts at non-linear scales. The numerical implementations are now reliable for these settings. We present the results for an optimistic and a pessimistic choice for these types of settings. We demonstrate that the impact of cross-correlations is particularly relevant for models beyond a cosmological constant and may allow us to increase the dark energy figure of merit by at least a factor of three., 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: Forthcoming large photometric surveys for cosmology require precise and accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) measurements for the success of their main science objectives. However, to date, no method has been able to produce photo-zs at the required accuracy using only the broad-band photometry that those surveys will provide. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current methods is a crucial step in the eventual development of an approach to meet this challenge. We report on the performance of 13 photometric redshift code single value redshift estimates and redshift probability distributions (PDZs) on a common set of data, focusing particularly on the 0.2pdbl-pdbl2.6 redshift range that the Euclid mission will probe. We designed a challenge using emulated Euclid data drawn from three photometric surveys of the COSMOS field. The data was divided into two samples: one calibration sample for which photometry and redshifts were provided to the participants; and the validation sample, containing only the photometry to ensure a blinded test of the methods. Participants were invited to provide a redshift single value estimate and a PDZ for each source in the validation sample, along with a rejection flag that indicates the sources they consider unfit for use in cosmological analyses. The performance of each method was assessed through a set of informative metrics, using cross-matched spectroscopic and highly-accurate photometric redshifts as the ground truth. We show that the rejection criteria set by participants are efficient in removing strong outliers, that is to say sources for which the photo-z deviates by more than 0.15(1pdbl+pdblz) from the spectroscopic-redshift (spec-z). We also show that, while all methods are able to provide reliable single value estimates, several machine-learning methods do not manage to produce useful PDZs. We find that no machine-learning method provides good results in the regions of galaxy color-space that are sparsely populated by spectroscopic-redshifts, for example zpdbl> pdbl1. However they generally perform better than template-fitting methods at low redshift (zpdbl< pdbl0.7), indicating that template-fitting methods do not use all of the information contained in the photometry. We introduce metrics that quantify both photo-z precision and completeness of the samples (post-rejection), since both contribute to the final figure of merit of the science goals of the survey (e.g., cosmic shear from Euclid). Template-fitting methods provide the best results in these metrics, but we show that a combination of template-fitting results and machine-learning results with rejection criteria can outperform any individual method. On this basis, we argue that further work in identifying how to best select between machine-learning and template-fitting approaches for each individual galaxy should be pursued as a priority., GD and AG acknowledge the support from the Sinergia program of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Abstract: We present a new, updated version of the EuclidEmulator (called EuclidEmulator2), a fast and accurate predictor for the nonlinear correction of the matter power spectrum. Percent-level accurate emulation is now supported in the eight-dimensional parameter space of $w_0w_a$CDM$+\sum m_\nu$models between redshift $z=0$ and $z=3$ for spatial scales within the range 0.01 $h$/Mpc $\leq k \leq$ 10 $h$/Mpc. In order to achieve this level of accuracy, we have had to improve the quality of the underlying N-body simulations used as training data: (1) we use self-consistent linear evolution of non-dark matter species such as massive neutrinos, photons, dark energy and the metric field, (2) we perform the simulations in the so-called N-body gauge, which allows one to interpret the results in the framework of general relativity, (3) we run over 250 high-resolution simulations with $3000^3$ particles in boxes of 1 (Gpc/$h$)${}^3$ volumes based on paired-and-fixed initial conditions and (4) we provide a resolution correction that can be applied to emulated results as a post-processing step in order to drastically reduce systematic biases on small scales due to residual resolution effects in the simulations. We find that the inclusion of the dynamical dark energy parameter $w_a$ significantly increases the complexity and expense of creating the emulator. The high fidelity of EuclidEmulator2 is tested in various comparisons against N-body simulations as well as alternative fast predictors like Halofit, HMCode and CosmicEmu. A blind test is successfully performed against the Euclid Flagship v2.0 simulation. Nonlinear correction factors emulated with EuclidEmulator2 are accurate at the level of 1% or better for 0.01 $h$/Mpc $\leq k \leq$ 10 $h$/Mpc and $z\leq3$ compared to high-resolution dark matter only simulations. Abstract: Martinelli, M., et al., Upcoming surveys will map the growth of large-scale structure with unprecented precision, improving our understanding of the dark sector of the Universe. Unfortunately, much of the cosmological information is encoded on small scales, where the clustering of dark matter and the effects of astrophysical feedback processes are not fully understood. This can bias the estimates of cosmological parameters, which we study here for a joint analysis of mock Euclid cosmic shear and Planck cosmic microwave background data. We use different implementations for the modelling of the signal on small scales and find that they result in significantly different predictions. Moreover, the different non-linear corrections lead to biased parameter estimates, especially when the analysis is extended into the highly non-linear regime, with the Hubble constant, H0, and the clustering amplitude, σ8, affected the most. Improvements in the modelling of non-linear scales will therefore be needed if we are to resolve the current tension with more and better data. For a given prescription for the non-linear power spectrum, using different corrections for baryon physics does not significantly impact the precision of Euclid, but neglecting these correction does lead to large biases in the cosmological parameters. Abstract: Few studies have investigated the interactions of gender and social class as they relate to the decision made by adolescent students concerning college attendance, particularly in light of socio-cultural assumptions about men’s and women’s changing roles. We use evidence from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:02) to investigate this complicated relationship, using parent data to establish family socio-economic status. Using participants’ tenth grade answers to questions about their personal values, and their plans and reasons for attending college, we tested whether social class as well as 10th grade values toward family and work functioned differently for male and female students in their path to and enrollment in post-secondary education. Our findings reveal important gender differences in the relative importance of adolescent values in linking to post-secondary educational goals.

Abstract: One of the most powerful techniques to study the dark sector of the Universe is weak gravitational lensing. In practice, to infer the reduced shear, weak lensing measures galaxy shapes, which are the consequence of both the intrinsic ellipticity of the sources and of the integrated gravitational lensing effect along the line of sight. Hence, a very large number of galaxies is required in order to average over their individual properties and to isolate the weak lensing cosmic shear signal. If this `shape noise' can be reduced, significant advances in the power of a weak lensing surveys can be expected. This paper describes a general method for extracting the probability distributions of parameters from catalogues of data using Voronoi cells, which has several applications, and has synergies with Bayesian hierarchical modelling approaches. This allows us to construct a probability distribution for the variance of the intrinsic ellipticity as a function of galaxy property using only photometric data, allowing a reduction of shape noise. As a proof of concept the method is applied to the CFHTLenS survey data. Abstract: In this paper we present the testing of a back-illuminated development Euclid Visible Instrument (VIS) Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) to measure the intrinsic CCD Point Spread Function (PSF) characteristics using a novel modelling technique. We model the optical spot projection system and the CCD273-84 PSF jointly. We fit a model using Bayesian posterior probability density function, sampling to all available data simultaneously. The generative model fitting is shown, using simulated data, to allow good parameter estimations even when these data are not well sampled. Using available spot data we characterise a CCD273-84 PSF as a function of wavelength and intensity. Abstract: International audience; Early‐type dwarf galaxies are not simply featureless, old objects, but were found to be much more diverse, hosting substructures and a variety of stellar population properties. To explore the stellar content of faint early‐type galaxies, and to investigate in particular those with recent central star formation, we study colours and colour gradients within one effective radius in optical (g‐r) and near‐infrared (i‐H) bands for 120 Virgo cluster early‐type galaxies with 19 mag < M‐r < 16 mag. Twelve galaxies turn out to have blue cores, when defined as g‐r colour gradients larger than 0.10 mag/R‐eff, which represents the positive tail of the gradient distribution. For these galaxies, we find that they have the strongest age gradients, and that even outside the blue core, their mean stellar population is younger than the mean of ordinary faint early‐type galaxies. The metallicity gradients of these blue‐cored early‐type dwarf galaxies are, however, in the range of most normal faint early‐type galaxies, which we find to have non‐zero gradients with higher central metallicity. The blue central regions are consistent with star formation activity within the last few 100 Myr. We discuss whether these galaxies could be explained by environmental quenching of star formation in the outer galaxy regions while the inner star formation activity continued.

Abstract: Because of the need for modern lightweight electromagnetic sensor for near surface mapping in Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) in the beginning of year 2015 GTK purchased GEM-2 multi-frequency broadband electromagnetic sensor. During the year 2015 sensor was field-tested in several geologically and environmentally different targets and purposes. The results of the one, detecting and monitoring seepage from tailings pond, is presented in this abstract. Field tests have proved sensor’s suitability to wide range of near surface environmental studies including UXO-detection, environmental contamination mapping, shallow geology modellng and ice thickness mapping. Besides good quality data sensor has proven to be quick, reliable and easy to use equipment for shallow near surface mapping.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the impact that realistic scale-dependence systematic effects may have on cosmic shear tomography. We model spatially varying residual ellipticity and size variations in weak lensing measurements and propagate these through to predicted changes in the uncertainty and bias of cosmological parameters. We show that the survey strategy - whether it is regular or randomised - is an important factor in determining the impact of a systematic effect: a purely randomised survey strategy produces the smallest biases, at the expense of larger parameter uncertainties, and a very regularised survey strategy produces large biases, but unaffected uncertainties. However, by removing, or modelling, the affected scales (l-modes) in the regular cases the biases are reduced to negligible levels. We find that the integral of the systematic power spectrum is not a good metric for dark energy performance, and we advocate that systematic effects should be modelled accurately in real space, where they enter the measurement process, and their effect subsequently propagated into power spectrum contributions., 14 pages. Abstract: Reliance on quantitative work has led to understudy of the “underlife” of the classroom. We observed six 11th and 12th grade history and government classrooms, twice a week, for a semester in order to explore whether and how teachers express their personal opinions, permit students to express their opinions, discuss political participation, and exhibit political cynicism. We found that teachers often expressed their opinions, except for their vote for president. Student opinions, however, were frequently suppressed in formal classroom interaction. Discussion of participation was limited, with teachers oblivious to unconventional activity. Frustration, cynicism, and even name-calling were frequently observed in both teachers' and students' political rhetoric. Abstract: The authors examined the way that teachers perceive the academic abilities of young boys before the start of formal schooling. Using a 1998 nationally representative sample of 10,956 boys assessed at the start of kindergarten, the authors showed that teachers perceive young boys who are shorter than the perceived norm as less academically capable than are boys of average or above-average height. The findings help expand one's understanding of the way that children, and subsequently adults, use body image to view ability and performance.

Abstract: Despite the social equity work that still needs to be done in schools and society, many researchers, politicians, and social commentators claim that gender equity work in schools has been accomplished. These people assume that actions in school lead to gender equity outside it. But, there may be two problems with this assumption: 1) achieving equity in academic work may mask still‐inequitable gender work in schools and 2) girls’ and boys’ equal academic achievement does not promise social equality, inside or outside schools. The following study offers evidence from a recent middle school study that reveals how children’s gender identities are naturalized as neutral “student” identities, making the effects of children’s gender identity work invisible. This author argues that schooling at best maintains the inequity of the American gender status quo, and perhaps may work to actually lessen chances for women and men’s equitable life opportunities.

Abstract: The Euclid mission scientific payload is composed of two instruments: a VISible Imaging Instrument (VIS) and a Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer instrument (NISP). Each instrument has its own control unit. The Instrument Command and Data Processing Unit (VI-CDPU) is the control unit of the VIS instrument. The VI-CDPU is connected directly to the spacecraft by means of a MIL-STD-1553B bus and to the satellite Mass Memory Unit via a SpaceWire link. All the internal interfaces are implemented via SpaceWire links and include 12 high speed lines for the data provided by the 36 focal plane CCDs readout electronics (ROEs) and one link to the Power and Mechanisms Control Unit (VI-PMCU). VI-CDPU is in charge of distributing commands to the instrument sub-systems, collecting their housekeeping parameters and monitoring their health status. Moreover, the unit has the task of acquiring, reordering, compressing and transferring the science data to the satellite Mass Memory. This last feature is probably the most challenging one for the VI-CDPU, since stringent constraints about the minimum lossless compression ratio, the maximum time for the compression execution and the maximum power consumption have to be satisfied. Therefore, an accurate performance analysis at hardware layer is necessary, which could delay too much the design and development of software. In order to mitigate this risk, in the multilayered design of software we decided to design a middleware layer that provides a set of APIs with the aim of hiding the implementation of the HW connected layer to the application one. The middleware is built on top of the Operating System layer (which includes the Real-Time OS that will be adopted) and the onboard Computer Hardware. The middleware itself has a multi-layer architecture composed of 4 layers: the Abstract RTOS Adapter Layer (AOSAL), the Speci_c RTOS Adapter Layer (SOSAL), the Common Patterns Layer (CPL), the Service Layer composed of two subgroups which are the Common Service (CSL) and the Specific Service layer (SSL). The middleware design is made using the UML 2.0 standard. The AOSAL includes the abstraction of services provided by a generic RTOS (e.g Thread/Task, Time Management, Mutex and Semaphores) as well as an abstraction of SpaceWire and 1553-B bus Interface. The SOSAL is the implementation of AOSAL for the adopted RTOS. The CPL provides a set of patterns that are a general solution for common problems related to embedded hard Real Time systems. This set includes patterns for memory management, homogenous redundancy channels, pipes and filters for data exchange, proxies for slow memories, watchdog and reactive objects. The CPL is designed using a soft-metamodeling approach, so as to be as general as possible. Finally, the SL provides a set of services that are common to space applications. The testing of this middleware can be done both during the design using appropriate tools of analysis and in the implementation phase by means of unit testing tools.

Abstract: The fraction of star-forming to quiescent dwarf galaxies varies from almost infinity in the field to zero in the centers of rich galaxy clusters. What is causing this pronounced morphology-density relation? What do quiescent dwarf galaxies look like when studied in detail, and what conclusions can be drawn about their formation mechanism? Here we study a nearly magnitude-complete sample (-19 < M_r < -16 mag) of 121 Virgo cluster early types with deep near-infrared images from the SMAKCED project. We fit two-dimensional models with optional inner and outer components, as well as bar and lens components (in ~15% of the galaxies), to the galaxy images. While a single S��rsic function may approximate the overall galaxy structure, it does not entirely capture the light distribution of two-thirds of our galaxies, for which multi-component models provide a better fit. This fraction of complex galaxies shows a strong dependence on luminosity, being larger for brighter objects. We analyze the global and component-specific photometric scaling relations of early-type dwarf galaxies and discuss similarities with bright early and late types. The dwarfs' global galaxy parameters show scaling relations that are similar to those of bright disk galaxies. The inner components are mostly fitted with S��rsic n values close to 1. At a given magnitude they are systematically larger than the bulges of spirals, suggesting that they are not ordinary bulges. Abstract: We present spatially resolved kinematics and global stellar populations and mass-to-light ratios for a sample of 39 dwarf early-type (dE) galaxies in the Virgo cluster studied as part of the SMAKCED stellar absorption-line spectroscopy and imaging survey. This sample is representative of the early-type population in the absolute magnitude range -19.0 < M_r < -16.0. For each dE, we measure the rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile and fit an analytic function to the rotation curve. We study the significance of the departure of the rotation curve from the best fit analytic function (poorly fit) and of the difference between the approaching and receding sides of the rotation curve (asymmetry). We find that 62 +/- 8 % (23 out of the 39) of the dEs have a significant anomaly in their rotation curve. Analysis of the images reveals photometric anomalies for most galaxies. However, there is no clear correlation between the significance of the photometric and kinematic anomalies. We measure age-sensitive and metallicity-sensitive Lick spectral indices and find a wide range of ages and metallicities. We also find that 4 dEs have emission partially filling in the Balmer absorption lines. Finally, we estimate the total masses and dark matter fractions of the dEs. They have a median total mass and dark matter fraction within the Re of log Me = 9.1 +/- 0.2 and f_DM = 46 +/- 18 %. Abstract: The assay for the cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) has been shown to reflect increased type I collagen degradation in such pathological conditions as bone metastases and rheumatoid arthritis, but to be rather insensitive to the changes in physiological bone collagen turnover (e.g., induced by estrogen or bisphosphonate treatment). To determine the reasons for this discrepancy we localized the antigenic determinant recognized by the ICTP assay and studied the effects of two major osteoclastic proteinases, cathepsin K (EC 3.4.22.38) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9; gelatinase B; EC 3.4.24.35), on immunoreactivity. The antigenic determinant was shown to reside within the hydrophobic phenylalanine-rich regions of the carboxyterminal telopeptides of the two α1 chains of human type I collagen, situated between the triple helical domain and the lysine-derived trivalent cross-link. This conclusion was based on differences between the amino acid sequences and cross reactivities of the corresponding human and bovine antigens before and after proteolytic treatments with chymotrypsin. A trivalent cross-link is necessary for providing such a structure, because the divalently cross-linked and monomeric natural and synthetic peptides from the same region, but containing only one phenylalanine-rich sequence, showed poor immunoreaction. Recombinant human cathepsin K cleaved the trivalently cross-linked ICTP structure at two sites between the phenylalanine-rich region and the cross-link, destroying the reactivity with ICTP antibodies. On the contrary, the treatment of isolated ICTP by the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-9 (gelatinase B), MMP-1 (collagenase 1), or MMP-13 (collagenase 3) had no effect on the immunoreaction. Our results indicate that the increased circulating concentrations of ICTP found in several clinical situations are most likely produced by matrix metalloproteinases, whereas cathepsin K-mediated, osteoclastic bone resorption destroys ICTP antigenicity.

Abstract: Progressive hemifacial atrophy (PHA) is characterized by slow and progressive atrophy usually of one side of the face. PHA affects primarily the subcutaneous fat and muscle tissues, but may involve the bone. The cause is unknown. The treatment is symptomatic and directed at augmentation of the deficient soft-tissue volume. The reconstructive procedures may combine fat grafts, dermis fat grafts, pedicle flaps, bone grafts, microvascular free flaps, and alloplastic implants. We report a patient with of PHA whose condition was treated with a free latissimus dorsi (LD) perforator flap. The LD perforator flap was suitable for the large defect of the patient. It could easily be tailored and thinned to follow the facial contour. Minor revisions were needed for esthetic reasons. Abstract: Long-term trends in the bacteriological quality of Finnish rivers and lakes were investigated on the basis of some 64,000 observations of thermotolerant coliform bacteria (ThC) and 147,000 observations of fecal streptococci (FS) carried out in 1963-1993. Annual medians of ThC and FS were calculated for rivers and lakes of ten large drainage basins that together cover the whole country. In the lakes of all drainage basins the medians were low, typically less than 10 CFU (colony forming units) in 100 mL, often nondetectable, and trends were rare. Rivers were consistently more polluted than lakes. River water quality was best in sparsely populated areas of the north, where the medians were generally about 10 CFU in 100 mL. In coastal areas in the south and southwest rivers were more polluted and the medians typically exceeded the limit for good swimming water (100 CFU in 100 mL). Although the bacterial medians of rivers fluctuated, they often showed a decreasing trend in the 1960s and 1970s. This decrease occurred simultaneously with water pollution control measures carried out in the country. After the 1980s the decreasing trends, however, did not continue. Both ThC and FS had similar dynamics.

Abstract: With its total drainage basin of 37 107 km2 and mean annual discharge of 307 m3 s-1, the River Kymi is one of the largest in Finland. Presently it receives treated domestic wastewaters of about 160 000 inhabitants through eight treatment plants and treated industrial effluents from four paper mills, two cardboard mills and one pulp mill. In the 1960s all the wastewaters were discharged untreated to the river. However, the construction of domestic wastewater treatment plants began in the 1970s and mechanical wastewater treatment became common in industry. By the end of the 1980s practically all the wastewaters discharged to the river were treated in activated sludge processes. The aim of this paper was to investigate the influence of wastewater purification on the bacteriological quality of the river during these three decades. The bacteriological quality of the river was evaluated on the basis of annual medians of fecal streptococci (FS) calculated for 15 sites on the basis of 4804 FS enumerations from the years 1964-1992. The results show that the bacteriological quality improved steadily as the number of treatment plants increased and wastewater treatment became more effective. In the beginning of the 1960s the annual FS medians in the central part of the river were typically 1000-1500 CFU/100 ml, whereas in the 1990s they had decreased to 30-40 CFU/100 ml (CFU = colony forming units). The results indicate that FS input to the river was mainly of domestic origin.

Abstract: We investigated fecal contamination of Finnish lakes and rivers on the basis of 132 476 observations of total coliform bacteria (TC), thermotolerant coliform bacteria (ThC) and fecal streptococci (FS) enumerated in a nationwide monitoring programme during the period 1962–1984. The number of analyses of TC was 19 672, of ThC 16 456 and of FS 96 348. The waters were classified into three groups, influenced mainly by municipal wastewaters, industrial wastewaters or diffuse loading. Annual median bacterial concentrations were used for presenting the trends. All the concentrations decreased until about 1976, except TC concentrations in the industrialized and diffuse load areas. Since 1976 the concentrations decreased more slowly or occasionally even increased, especially those of TC. In the whole data the dynamics of bacterial loads (CFU s−1) were similar to those of annual median bacterial concentrations. The most probable explanations for the declining bacterial concentrations are increase in the human population served by wastewater treatment plants, improved sewage treatment processes, decreased wastewater volumes of the forest industry and decrease in the number of cattle. The monitoring programme continues.

Abstract: It is old knowledge that bones are for about 70% made up of calcium salts and for about 30% of collagen. More specifically, almost all of the collagen in the collagen fibres of mineralized tissues is type I collagen, while most of the other almost 20 genetically distinct collagen types are essentially proteins of soft tissues. Since type I collagen is also the most abundant collagen type in soft tissues, it forms the vast majority of all the collagenous proteins in the body. It seems reasonable to assume that 50–70% of the type I collagen in the body is in the skeleton. As bone is a metabolically more active tissue throughout life than most soft tissues, the contribution of bones to the biochemical markers reflecting type I collagen metabolism is even larger than is the proportion of this collagen type in the body.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Postoperative lymphedema after breast cancer surgery is a challenging problem. Recently, a novel microvascular lymph node transfer technique provided a fresh hope for patients with lymphedema. We aimed to combine this new method with the standard breast reconstruction. METHODS During 2008-2010, we performed free lower abdominal flap breast reconstruction in 87 patients. For all patients with lymphedema symptoms (n = 9), we used a modified lower abdominal reconstruction flap containing lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels surrounding the superficial circumflex vessel pedicle. Operation time, donor site morbidity, and postoperative recovery between the 2 groups (lymphedema breast reconstruction and breast reconstruction) were compared. The effect on the postoperative lymphatic vessel function was examined. RESULTS The average operation time was 426 minutes in the lymphedema breast reconstruction group and 391 minutes in the breast reconstruction group. The postoperative abdominal seroma formation was increased in patients with lymphedema. Postoperative lymphoscintigraphy demonstrated at least some improvement in lymphatic vessel function in 5 of 6 patients with lymphedema. The upper limb perimeter decreased in 7 of 9 patients. Physiotherapy and compression was no longer needed in 3 of 9 patients. Importantly, we found that human lymph nodes express high levels of endogenous lymphatic vessel growth factors. Transfer of the lymph nodes and the resulting endogenous growth factor expression may thereby induce the regrowth of lymphatic network in the axilla. No edema problems were detected in the lymph node donor area. CONCLUSION Simultaneous breast and lymphatic reconstruction is an ideal option for patients who suffer from lymphedema after mastectomy and axillary dissection.

Abstract: Concentrations of thermotolerant coliform bacteria, presumptive E. coli, and presumptive fecal streptococci were determined from ditches, brooks, and natural ponds in six agricultural areas and 22 uninhabited pristine areas in southern Finland in the summer of 1987. For comparison, the same fecal indicators were enumerated from the effluents of three wastewater treatment plants. The objective was to compare the importance of these waters as sources of fecal indicators in receiving waters. The numbers of bacteria in waters in agricultural areas often exceeded the limit of acceptable swimming water (1000 bacteria per 100 mL), especially during wet periods, which shows that diffuse loading can be a significant source of fecal pollution. Fecal indicators were detected in about half of the samples of pristine areas, sometimes in concentrations exceeding the limit of good swimming water (100 bacteria per 100 mL). This contamination was probably caused by wild animals, especially by elk (Alces alces) and deer (Odocoileus virginianus) living in the areas. The concentrations of bacteria were higher in running waters than in ponds. The reliabilities of routine enumeration methods for the bacteria were evaluated by carrying out confirmation tests for isolated strains. Thermotolerant coliforms were reliable indicators in waters contaminated by diffuse loading. The reliability of enumeration of fecal streptococci in these waters should be studied further.

Abstract: Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen type in soft tissues and the only type found in mineralized bone. We established a rapid equilibrium radioimmunoassay for the carboxyterminal propeptide of human type I procollagen (PICP), to be used as an indicator of the synthesis of type I collagen. We isolated type I procollagen from the medium of primary cultures of human skin fibroblasts, digested the protein with highly purified bacterial collagenase, and purified PICP by lectin-affinity chromatography, gel filtration, and ion-exchange separation on HPLC. The purity of the protein was verified by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by N-terminal amino acid sequencing of its component chains. The final radioimmunoassay was established with polyclonal rabbit antibodies. Material antigenically related to PICP is readily detected in human serum. There is only one form of the serum antigen, its molecular size and affinity to the antibodies being similar to those of the isolated propeptide. Intra- and interassay CVs are 3% and 5%, respectively. Preliminary reference intervals for healthy adults (18 to 61 years of age) are 38-202 micrograms/L for men and 50-170 micrograms/L for women: in men the concentration is inversely related to age. The serum antigen is stable during storage and after repeated thawing.

Abstract: Thermotolerant coliform bacteria and fecal streptococci were monitored in polluted rivers using random sampling and a distribution-free method of estimating percentiles. The objective was to investigate the wide temporal and spatial variation observed earlier in some of these rivers and to monitor for compliance with the standard of acceptable swimming water (1000 thermotolerant coliform bacteria per 100mL). In the summer of 1986 eleven river reaches were visited in random order 3 to 10 times, randomly sampling 2 to 13 sites per reach and visit. Thermotolerant coliform bacteria and fecal streptococci were determined by the membrane filtration technique from 341 and 232 samples, respectively. The results were evaluated on the basis of statistical parameters, percentiles and analysis of variance. Bacterial concentrations varied widely in every reach due to fluctuations of loading and/or hydrological phenomena. During dry periods the bacterial concentrations in rivers were lower than during wet periods. The standard of acceptable swimming water was temporarily exceeded during wet periods but never during dry periods. The use of random sampling and calculation of percentiles was found to provide a good overall picture of the variability of water quality in the rivers. It is recommended to evaluate the bacterial concentrations separately during wet and dry periods.
