Abstract

The global polarization of Λ hyperons along the total orbital angular momentum of a relativistic heavy-ion collision is presented based on the high statistics data samples collected in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV and Ag+Ag at 2.55 GeV with the High-Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI, Darmstadt. This is the first measurement below the strangeness production threshold in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Results are reported as a function of the collision centrality as well as a function of the hyperon's transverse momentum (pT) and rapidity (yCM) for the range of centrality 0–40%. We observe a strong centrality dependence of the polarization with an increasing signal towards peripheral collisions. For mid-central (20 – 40%) collisions the polarization magnitudes are 〈PΛ〉(%)=6.8±1.3(stat.)±2.1(syst.) for Au+Au and 〈PΛ〉(%)=6.2±0.4(stat.)±0.6(syst.) for Ag+Ag, which are the largest values observed so far. This observation thus provides a continuation of the increasing trend previously observed by STAR and contrasts expectations from recent theoretical calculations predicting a maximum in the region of collision energies about 3 GeV. The observed polarization is of a similar magnitude as predicted by 3D-fluid-dynamics and the UrQMD plus thermal vorticity model and significantly above results from the AMPT model.

Abstract

Pion induced reactions provide unique opportunities for an unambiguous description of baryonic resonances and their coupling channels by means of a partial wave analysis. Using the secondary pion beam at SIS18, the two pion production in the second resonance region has been investigated to unravel the role of the $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance in the intermediate $\rho$ production. Results on exclusive channels with one pion ($\pi^{-}p$) and two pions ($\pi^{+}\pi^{-}n$, $\pi^{0}\pi^{-}p$) in the final state measured in the $\pi^{-}-p$ reaction at four different pion beam momenta (0.650, 0.685, 0.733, and 0.786 GeV/c) are presented. The excitation function of the different partial waves and $\Delta\pi$, $N\sigma$ and $N\rho$ isobar configurations is obtained, using the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis. The $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance is found to dominate the $N\rho$ final state with the branching ratio $BR=12.2 \pm 1.9\%$.

Abstract

Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) technology has been used to design and construct prototypes of time-zero detector for experiments utilizing proton and pion beams with High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. LGAD properties have been studied with proton beams at the COoler SYnchrotron (COSY) facility in J\"ulich, Germany. We have demonstrated that systems based on a prototype LGAD operated at room temperature and equipped with leading-edge discriminators reach a time precision below 50 ps. Abstract

A feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances $\Sigma(1385)^0$, $\Lambda(1405)$ and $\Lambda{\Lambda}(1520)$ as well as the production of double strange baryon systems $\Xi^-$ and $\Lambda\Lambda$ in p+p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 4.5 GeV. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Abstract

A 64-channel readout and data-acquisition module is described in detail. It consists of an H12700 multianode photomultiplier tube, four PADIWA preamplifier boards, and a TRB v3 card that perform the functions of a time-to-digital converter and a data concentrator. The software modules that are necessary for operation of the prototype are described. The inter-channel delays are calibrated. The drift of individual delays does not exceed 0.5 ns for the entire measurement time. The spectra of the “time over threshold” (ToT) are investigated. The influence of periodic noise pickups and the need to improve circuit designs are revealed. The timing properties of the wavelength shifter and its effect on the detection efficiency for Cherenkov rings are investigated. The most intense component is characterized by a decay time of 1.1 ns and there are components with characteristic times of 3.8 and 45 ns. The influence of single-electron spectrum features on the detection efficiency for photoelectrons and the probability of false hits are determined. The total time resolution of 131 channels is 1.1 ns (FWHM). The results make it possible to use the investigated system of readout and data acquisition in the CBM experiment. Nevertheless, the elimination of the revealed shortcomings will provide the efficiency margin and improve the reliability of the system during long-term operation.

Abstract

The CBM-RICH detector is designed to identify electrons with momenta up to 8 GeV/c and high purity as this is essential for the CBM physics program. The detector consist of a CO2-gaseous radiator, a spherical mirror system, and Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT) of type H12700 from Hamamatsu as photon detectors. The detector concept was verified through R&D studies and a laterally scaled prototype. The results were summarized in a TDR, in which open issues were defined concerning the readout electronics, the shielding of the magnetic stray field in the MAPMT region, the radiation hardness of the MAPMT sensors, and the mechanical holding structure of the mirror system. In this article an overview is given on the CBM RICH development with focus on those open issues.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future FAIR facility will investigate the QCD phase diagram at high net baryon densities and moderate temperatures in A+A collisions from 2 to 11 AGeV (SIS100). Electron identification in CBM will be performed by a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector and Transition Radiation Detectors (TRD). A real size prototype of the RICH detector was tested together with other CBM groups at the CERN PS/T9 beam line in 2014. For the first time the data format used the FLESnet protocol from CBM delivering free streaming data. The analysis was fully performed within the CBMROOT framework. In this contribution the data analysis and the event reconstruction methods which were used for obtained data are discussed. Rings were reconstructed using an algorithm based on the Hough Transform method and their parameters were derived with high accuracy by circle and ellipse fitting procedures. We present results of the application of the presented algorithms. In particular we compare results with and without Wavelength shifting (WLS) coating.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR) will investigate the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter at high net-baryon density and moderate temperature in A+A collisions. One of the key detectors of CBM to explore this physics program is a Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detector for electron identification. For a high performance of the RICH detector precise mirror alignment is essential. A three-step correction cycle has been developed, which will be discussed: First a qualitative, fast check of the mirror positions, second a quantitative determination of possible misalignments and third a software correction routine, allowing a proper functioning of the RICH under misalignment conditions.

Abstract

The CBM RICH detector is an integral component of the future CBM experiment at FAIR, providing efficient electron identification and pion suppression necessary for the measurement of rare dileptonic probes in heavy ion collisions. An overview of the CBM RICH readout and DAQ system prototype is given, consisting of the PADIWA preamplifier-discriminator board, the TDC-HUB board TRBv3, and DAQ and analysis code in the CbmRoot framework. The laboratory setup built for studying the timing characteristics of the readout chain and the analysis results obtained using the laboratory measurements are presented. The fine time calibration and inter-channel delay correction techniques and their implementation and effect are discussed.

Abstract

We present the first observation of K- and \phi absorption within nuclear matter by means of \pi- -induced reactions on C and W targets at an incident beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c studied with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The double ratio (K-/K+)W / (K-/K+)C is found to be 0.319 \pm 0.009(stat)+0.014-0.012 (syst) indicating a larger absorption of K- in heavier targets as compared to lighter ones. The measured \phi/K- ratios in \pi-+C and \pi^- +W reactions within the HADES acceptance are found to be equal to $0.55 \pm 0.03(stat)+0.06-0.07$ (syst) and to $0.63 \pm 0.05(stat)-0.11+0.11$ (syst), respectively. The similar ratios measured in the two different reactions demonstrate for the first time experimentally that the dynamics of the \phi meson in nuclear medium is strongly coupled to the K- dynamics. The large difference in the \phi production off C and W nuclei is discussed in terms of a strong \phiN in-medium coupling., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The HADES collaboration uses the e+e−production as a probe of the resonance matter produced in collisions at incident energies of 1-3.5 GeV/nucleon at GSI. Elementary reactions provide useful references for these studies and give information on resonance Dalitz decays (R→Ne+e−). Such processes are sensitive to the structure of time-like electromagnetic baryon transitions in a kinematic range where (off-shell) vector mesons play a crucial role. Results obtained in proton-proton reactions and in a commissioning pion-beam experiment are reported and prospects for future pion beam experiments and for first hyperon Dalitz decay measurements are described. The connection with the investigations of medium effects to be continued with HADES in the next years at SIS18 and SIS100 is also discussed.

Abstract

A real size prototype of the CBM RICH detector was tested in beam at CERN in November 2014 with new readout electronics. A detailed analysis of the timing characteristics of the readout chain will be presented in this article. Results of the time precision measurements for several subsets of all channels and the stability of the fine time calibration will be discussed. The obtained sub-nanosecond time precision allows also to investigate the effect on timing when using additional wavelength-shifting films on top of the MAPMT windows.

Abstract

In 2015 1100 Multi-Anode Photo-Multipliers (MAPMTs) of type HAMAMATSU H12700 were ordered to equip the photon detection plane of the CBM-RICH and HADES-RICH detectors. Both experiments aim to study the properties of dense matter produced in heavy ion collisions. To measure the characteristics of all ordered MAPMTs and give feedback to the manufacturer, a test bench was built at the University of Wuppertal. This paper describes the working principle of the test bench and compiles the measurements of the first 400 H12700 MAPMTs delivered. The average characteristics of the H12700 gathered from these measurements are discussed and compared to measurements of the HAMAMATSU H8500.

Abstract

Wavelength-shifting (WLS) films of p-terphenyl have been applied by means of dip-coating on the entrance window of the H12700 multi anode photomultiplier (MAPMT) in order to enhance the UV sensitivity. Using coated and uncoated MAPMTs in a CBM RICH testbox in a proton testbeam at the COSY accelerator, an enhancement of the number of hits per ring of 15%–20% depending on cuts has been observed. Due to new fast readout electronics of the RICH detector for the CBM/ HADES experiments, the time response of p-terphenyl has been measured to show a decay constant of 2.35 ns. This compares well with time-resolved fluorescence measurements of the films.

Abstract

The upgraded HADES RICH detector, as well as the future CBM RICH detector, will both use the same Hamamatsu H12700 Multianode PMTs read out by the newly developed DiRICH FPGA-TDC readout chain for MAPMTs and MCPs. The upgrade of the HADES RICH photon detector has meanwhile been completed, and we are now looking forward to the upcoming physics run in spring 2019. A brief overview on the status of both detector projects is given and supplemented with the recent test-beam results which confirmed the functionality of the DiRICH development before the start of the mass-production of all DiRICH components needed for the HADES RICH upgrade.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR) complex will explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter at high baryon density and moderate temperatures in A+A collisions. The energy spectrum will start at 2 AGeV/c and extend up to 11 AGeV/c for the heaviest nuclei at the SIS 100 accelerator set-up. To explore the physics program of CBM, a RICH detector will be employed for electron identification and pion suppression in a momentum range up to 8 GeV/c. Mirror alignment is a key issue for a proper detector operation. The final conceptual design for a monitoring system of the alignment of the mirrors of the CBM RICH detector will be introduced. It consists of a fast qualitative check of the alignment as well as two different methods to derive quantitative numbers for misalignments. A software correction cycle had been developed which, once applied allows to get back to physics performances as in an ideally aligned case.

Abstract

Wavelength-shifting (WLS) films were applied on UV-extended front windows of multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) in order to increase the sensitivity of the MAPMTs at shorter wavelengths. The WLS material contained p-Terphenyl as photoactive component, which absorbs shorter wavelength photons ( 300 nm ) and re-emits fluorescence photons around 350 nm, i.e., at the maximum of the PMTs׳ sensitivity. The films were applied by means of dip-coating and the film performance was studied with respect to quantum efficiency, film homogeneity, and crosstalk on the MAPMTs. Using WLS-film-covered MAPMTs in a gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector, the number of detected photoelectrons per ring increased by up to 21% in an in-beam test.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future FAIR facility will investigate the QCD phase diagram at high net-baryon densities and moderate temperatures. One of the key signatures will be di-leptons emitted from the hot and dense phase in heavy-ion collisions. Measuring di-electrons, a high purity of identified electrons is required in order to suppress the background. Electron identification in CBM will be performed by a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector and Transition Radiation Detectors (TRD). In order to access the foreseen rare probes, the detector and the data acquisition have to handle interaction rates up to 10 MHz. Therefore, the development of fast and efficient event reconstruction algorithms is an important and challenging task in CBM. In this contribution event reconstruction and electron identification algorithms in the RICH detector are presented. So far they have been developed on simulated data but could already be tested on real data from a RICH prototype testbeam experiment at the CERN-PS. Efficient and fast ring recognition algorithms in the CBM-RICH are based on the Hough Transform method. Due to optical distortions of the rings, an ellipse fitting algorithm was elaborated to improve the ring radius resolution. An efficient algorithm based on the Artificial Neural Network was implemented for electron identification in RICH. All algorithms were significantly optimized to achieve maximum speed and minimum memory consumption.

Abstract

A transition radiation detector (TRD) prototype based on a single multiwire proportional chamber coupled with a small drift region was developed for the innermost part of the CBM-TRD subsystem. It preserves the same gas thickness for transition radiation absorption as the double-sided TRD prototype for which a pion misidentification probability of better than 1% for a six layer configuration was obtained. In the same time it fulfills the requirement of a high geometrical efficiency of CBM-TRD stations. The readout electrode geometry with triangular shaped pads gives access to a two-dimensional position information with a single TRD layer. The detector was tested with a mixed electron/pion beam of 1–5 GeV/ c momentum at the CERN PS accelerator. A pion misidentification probability of 1.18% for a six layer configuration based on this architecture was obtained. The two-dimensional position resolutions (along and across the pads) were measured. The pad signals were processed using a new front-end electronics called Fast Analog Signal Processor (FASP), designed for high-counting-rate environments. CADENCE simulations were used for further optimization of the FASP amplifier for operating this new architecture.

Abstract

Electron identification in the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will be performed using a gaseous RICH detector. Due to the UV transparency of the CO 2 radiator, a high photon detection efficiency of the PMTs in use at small wavelengths is favourable. The use of wavelength shifting (WLS) films aims at increasing the integral quantum efficiency of the photon sensors. WLS films absorb UV photons and re-emit photons at longer wavelengths where the quantum efficiency of common photocathodes is higher. As photon sensors, multianode PMTs (MAPMTs) with bialkali or superbialkali photocathodes and UV-extended windows are envisaged. We present quantum efficiency measurements with and without WLS coating for different types of MAPMTs as well as results from a beam test at the CERN PS. An increased photon yield was observed when using WLS films. In addition, we discuss the effect of WLS films on the spatial resolution of MAPMTs.

Abstract

A new transition radiation detector (TRD) prototype foreseen to fulfill the requirements of the TRD subdetector of the CBM experiment at FAIR has been designed, constructed and tested with electrons and pions of a few GeV/c. The detector prototype was build with the original TRD architecture which preserves the high conversion efficiency of transition radiation in a single TRD layer. This TRD architecture is based on two multiwire proportional chambers readout by a common double-sided pad read-out electrode. The triangular shape of the readout pads gives access to the position information in both coordinates which defines the readout electrode plane. Pion efficiency as a function of number of TRD layers and position resolution were studied using electron and pion beams delivered by PS at CERN. Dedicated front-end electronics, designed for high counting rate environment was used. An extrapolated pion efficiency of 0.5% for a six layer TRD configuration at 90% electron efficiency using a regular foil radiator was obtained. The position resolution across the pads is of the order of 320 μ m and along the pads of 5.5 mm.

Abstract

The Data Acquisition Backbone Core (DABC) is a new GSI software framework to run a data acquisition with distributed event building on high performance Linux clusters. Experiment specific front-end electronics is to be integrated to the software by means of hardware interface plug-ins like Device and Transport classes. DABC offers elaborate mechanisms for multiprocessing, buffer management, and dataflow throttling. These are transparently available for all implemented plug-ins. Device plug-ins can link a DABC node to remote readout hardware via network connections like Ethernet. Other Device plug-ins can communicate on the Linux device driver level with custom boards directly inserted at the node. Besides delivering the data input, a DABC Device can also provide control access to the connected hardware. This functionality can be used for setting up, or monitoring the front-ends from the application via DABC parameters and commands. An implementation example is a multipurpose PCI Express Optical Receiver (PEXOR) board developed at GSI. This board features an FPGA and 4 optical links and may be used for various front-ends, depending on the FPGA programming. A kernel driver and the DABC Device plug-in for this board have been developed and tested. They are described here with some performance bench-mark results. As another example, DABC is applied for data taking during test beam times of the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment from 2008 to 2010. Here the front-end readout controller boards (ROC) were integrated to the DABC hardware interface, both for a UDP based Ethernet protocol, and for optical connections to a custom PCIe board.

Full data analysis is often necessary for monitoring complex nuclear and atomic physics experiments. This analysis program should run continuously getting data directly from the data acquisition to provide information with low latency. Several visualization and control clients, typically graphical user inter faces (GUI), should be able to inspect the results from the analysis, mostly histograms, but also other objects like parameters. It should be possible for the clients to get updates of selected data continuously without blocking user actions. The Go4 analysis framework developed at GSI provides this functionality. A Go4 analysis program may run in a server mode under control of a non-blocking GUI. Analysis and GUI run in separate tasks, optionally on different nodes. In dedicated threads they can send/receive objects asynchronously via TCP connections. Additional distributed viewers (GUIs) may connect to the same analysis. The Go4 framework is based on the analysis package ROOT developed at CERN. Data channels to the experiment specific data acquisition are implemented as data source classes (plug-ins). The GUI is implemented using the cross-platform GUI framework Qt, version 4, embedding the full ROOT graphics. User written GUIs can be attached. ROOT macros can be executed in the analysis or GUI context, respectively. Complex fits can be performed interactively by a powerful fit package. Go4 v4 runs on Linux, Solaris, Windows (XP, 7) and MacOS. Cross platform connections between G04 environments are possible. Go4 runs in production for several years mainly in the nuclear and atomic physics fields.

Abstract

New experiments at FAIR require new concepts of data acquisition systems. So rather than building hardware trigger configurations with strict latency limitations, self-triggered electronic systems will be utilized. Their front-end components will be time synchronized and will provide data furnished with time stamps. Data streams from a multitude of such components will be forwarded via a powerful sorting network to an event building farm. The Data Acquisition Backbone Core (DABC) is designed as a general purpose software framework for the implementation of such data acquisition systems. It is written in C++. Recently, we made its first version available. In this paper we describe the mechanisms of the data flow engine of DABC.

Abstract

For the new experiments at FAIR like CBM new concepts of data acquisition systems have to be developed like the distribution of self-triggered, time stamped data streams over high performance networks for event building. The data acquisition backbone core DABC is designed for FAIR detector tests, readout components test, data flow investigations, and DAQ controls. All kinds of data channels (front-end systems) are connected by plug-ins into functional components of DABC like data input, combiner, scheduler, event builder, analysis and storage. On the other hand, the current GSI DAQ system MBS with its huge installed hardware base (about 100 installed, 50% outside GSI) must be integrated in any new DAQ concept. After detailed simulations now real tests (on InfiniBand clusters) of event building over networks had been performed. Several software packages (uDAPL, OpenFabric IB Verbs, MPI2) have been used to measure the performance of InfiniBand. One can achieve about 80% of the bidirectional nominal IB bandwidth of 1 GByte/s. To achieve real reliable performance with IB one needs the optional real time extensions of the latest Linux kernel 2.6.21. Some infrastructure components of the XDAQ package developed for the CMS experiment have been evaluated for DABC. The development of key components is supported by the FutureDAQ project of the European Union (FP6 I3HP JRA1).

Go4 developed at GSI is an analysis framework with a general purpose nonblocking Graphical User Interface (GUI). Go4 is based on ROOT. The GUI is implemented in Qt using GSIs QtROOT interface. Analysis and GUI run in separate tasks communicating through asynchronous object channels. Therefore, the framework is especially useful for on-line monitoring where an analysis should run continuously, but controlled at any time from the GUI. The analysis also should be able to update graphical objects in the display. The HADES experiment at GSI integrated an existing ROOT based monitoring analysis into Go4. A Go4 analysis may use any ROOT features. It can be organized in steps, which can be controlled from the GUI according to the user specifications. Each step is composed of event objects, the event processing, and event IO. Go4 composite event classes allow the construction of arbitrary complex events hierarchically composed of objects. The IO of the composite event objects to and from ROOT trees/branches is provided without explicit programming. Arbitrary hierarchy levels of composite events can be browsed by the Go4 tree viewer. The GUI provides hooks to attach user written GUI's. These GUI's have access to all objects of the analysis, i.e., events for asynchronous event display. Using the Qt designer the development of such GUI's is very efficient. The HADES experiment implemented a dedicated GUI for the on-line monitoring. The Go4 fit package (API and GUI) is a powerful and extendable tool to model and fit experimental data.

Abstract

High precision time measurements are a crucial element in particle identification experiments, which likewise require pulse width information for Time-over-Threshold (ToT) measurements and charge measurements (correlated with pulse width). In almost all of the FPGA-based TDC applications, pulse width measurements are implemented using two of the TDC channels for leading and trailing edge time measurements individually. This method however, requires twice the number of resources. In this paper we present the latest precision improvements in the high precision TDC (8 ps RMS) developed before [1], as well as the novel way of measuring ToT using a single TDC channel, while still achieving high precision (as low as 11.7 ps RMS). The effect of voltage, generated by a DC-DC converter, over the precision is also discussed. Finally, the outcome of the temperature change over the pulse width measurement is shown and a correction method is suggested to limit the degradation.

The Data Acquisition Backbone Core (DABC) is a software framework for distributed data acquisition. In 2013 Version 2 of DABC has been released with several improvements. For monitoring and control, an HTTP web server and a proprietary command channel socket have been provided. Web browser GUIs have been implemented for configuration and control of DABC and MBS DAQ nodes via such HTTP server. Several specific plug-ins, for example interfacing PEXOR/KINPEX optical readout PCIe boards, or HADES trbnet input and hld file output, have been further developed. In 2014, DABC v2 was applied for production data taking of the HADES collaboration's pion beam time at GSI. It fully replaced the functionality of the previous event builder software and added new features concerning online monitoring.

Abstract

Control systems commonly use servers publishing data or actions, and clients like graphical user interfaces (GUI) subscribing for data. Clients get the data synchronously or asynchronously and can launch actions at the server. Examples are EPICS or DIM based systems. If the setup of servers is stable one can design optimized GUIs for these setups. If, however, very different setups have to be controlled by one GUI, or the setups change rapidly like in a development phase, a generic approach is very convenient. A generic GUI should subscribe to all published parameters and present them nicely. It should offer all commands together with their argument definitions. Such a generic approach has been implemented on top of the DIM services.

For the last several months the main focus of development in the ROOT I/O package has been code consolidation and performance improvements. Access to remote files is affected both by bandwidth and latency. We introduced a pre-fetch mechanism to minimize the number of transactions between client and server and hence reducing the effect of latency. We will review the implementation and how well it works in different conditions (gain of an order of magnitude for remote file access). We will also review new utilities, including a faster implementation of TTree cloning (gain of an order of magnitude), a generic mechanism for object references, and a new entry list mechanism tuned both for small and large number of selections. In addition to reducing the coupling with the core module and becoming its owns library (libRIO) (as part of the general restructuration of the ROOT libraries), the I/O package has been enhanced in the area of XML and SQL support, thread safety, schema evolution, TTreeFormula, and many other areas. We will also discuss various ways, ROOT will be able to benefit from multi-core architecture to improve I/O performances. In addition to reducing the coupling with the core module and becoming its owns library (libRIO) (as part of the general restructuration of the ROOT libraries), the I/O package has been enhanced in the area of XML and SQL support, thread safety, schema evolution, TTreeFormula, and many other areas. We will also discuss various ways, ROOT will be able to benefit from multi-core architecture to improve I/O performances.

Abstract

The HADES spectrometer currently operating on the beam of SIS18 accelerator in GSI will be moved to a new position in the CBM cave of the future FAIR complex. Electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) will enable the HADES@FAIR experiment to measure data on neutral meson production in heavy ion collisions at the energy range of 2-10 A GeVon the beam of the new accelerator SIS100. Calorimeter will be based on 978 massive lead glass modules read out by photomultipliers and a novel front-end electronics. Secondary gamma beam with energies ranging from 81 MeV up to 1399 MeV from MAMI-C Mainz facility was used to verify selected technical solutions. Relative energy resolution was measured using modules with three different types of photomultipliers. Two types of developed front-end electronics as well as energy leakage between neighbouring modules under parallel and declined gamma beams were studied in detail.

Abstract

The main task of the future Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment (CBM), to be operated at the FAIR facility at GSI, Darmstadt, is the exploration of the properties of super-dense nuclear matter. The search for in-medium modifications of hadrons, the study of the transition from dense hadronic matter to quark-gluon matter, and the possible location of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram of strongly interacting matter are the most important physics goals of CBM. Detailed measurements of di-leptons stemming from low-mass vector-mesons and charmonium have a large potential to shed light on the existence of such effects. The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector of the CBM experiment aims at a clean and efficient electron identification. It is foreseen to use CO2 as radiator gas and equip the detector with a focussing mirror system and multi-anode photomultiplier tubes as photon detector. In this paper we present selected results of R&D studies and beam test measurements of the detector prototype performed in fall 2011 and 2012 at the CERN/PS with a mixed electron-pion beam.

Abstract

The TRB3 features four FPGA-based TDCs with < 20 ps RMS time precision between two channels and 256+4+4 channels in total. One central FPGA provides flexible trigger functionality and GbE connectivity including powerful slow control. We present recent users' applications of this platform following the COME&KISS principle: successful test beamtimes at CERN (CBM), in Julich and Mainz with an FPGA-based discriminator board (PaDiWa), a charge-to-width FEE board with high dynamic range, read-out of the n-XYTER ASIC and software for data unpacking and TDC calibration in ROOT. We conclude with an outlook on future developments.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment will operate a free streaming data acquisition system. In order to optimize the data bandwidth and to achieve high performance, a data pre-processing is designed in the readout chain for the CBM-TOF detector. In this paper, we present the design of this module, results of its simulations and preliminary in-beam results which obtained with a test setup on the proton beam at the COSY accelerator in Julich, Germany.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment is intended to run at the FAIR facility that is currently being built at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. For testing of future CBM detector and read-out electronics prototypes, several test beam campaigns have been performed at different locations, such as GSI, COSY, and CERN PS. The DAQ software has to treat various data inputs: standard VME modules on the MBS system, and different kinds of FPGA boards, read via USB, Ethernet, or optical links. The Data Acquisition Backbone Core framework (DABC) is able to combine such different data sources with event-builder processes running on regular Linux PCs. DABC can also retrieve the instrumental set-up data from EPICS slow control systems and insert it into the event data stream for later analysis. Vice versa, the DIM based DABC control protocol has been integrated to the general CBM EPICS IOC by means of an EPICS-DIM interface. Hence the DAQ can be monitored and steered with a CSS based operator GUI. The CBM online monitoring analysis is based on the GSI Go4 framework which can directly connect to DABC online data via sockets, or process stored data from list-mode files. A Go4 sub-framework has been implemented to provide possibility of parallel development of analysis code for different sub-detectors groups. This allows divide the Go4 components up into independent software packages that can run either standalone, or together at the beam-time in a full set-up.

Abstract

Motivated by the requirements of the next generation experiments in terms of very good time and position resolution in high counting rate and multiplicity environment, a new architecture of differential, strip structure, symmetric, multi gap timing RPC was developed. The results on efficiency, time resolution, position resolution and performance in high counting rate environment using low resistivity glass electrodes are reported.

Abstract

The Data Acquisition Backbone Core (DABC) is a general purpose software framework designed for the implementation of a wide-range of data acquisition systems – from various small detector test beds to high performance systems. DABC consists of a compact data-flow kernel and a number of plug-ins for various functional components like data inputs, device drivers, user functional modules and applications. DABC provides configurable components for implementing event building over fast networks like InfiniBand or Gigabit Ethernet. A generic Java GUI provides the dynamic control and visualization of control parameters and commands, provided by DIM servers. A first set of application plug-ins has been implemented to use DABC as event builder for the front-end components of the GSI standard DAQ system MBS (Multi Branch System). Another application covers the connection to DAQ readout chains from detector front-end boards (N-XYTER) linked to read-out controller boards (ROC) over UDP into DABC for event building, archiving and data serving. This was applied for data taking in the September 2008 test beamtime for the CBM experiment at GSI. DABC version 1.0 is released and available from the website.
