1. A novel approach to analysing the regimes of temporary streams in relation to their controls on the composition and structure of aquatic biota

Abstract: Temporary streams are those water courses that undergo the recurrent cessation of flow or the complete drying of their channel. The structure and composition of biological communities in temporary stream reaches are strongly dependent on the temporal changes of the aquatic habitats determined by the hydrological conditions. Therefore, the structural and functional characteristics of aquatic fauna to assess the ecological quality of a temporary stream reach cannot be used without taking into account the controls imposed by the hydrological regime. This paper develops methods for analysing temporary streams' aquatic regimes, based on the definition of six aquatic states that summarize the transient sets of mesohabitats occurring on a given reach at a particular moment, depending on the hydrological conditions: Hyperrheic, Eurheic, Oligorheic, Arheic, Hyporheic and Edaphic. When the hydrological conditions lead to a change in the aquatic state, the structure and composition of the aquatic community changes according to the new set of available habitats. We used the water discharge records from gauging stations or simulations with rainfall-runoff models to infer the temporal patterns of occurrence of these states in the Aquatic States Frequency Graph we developed. The visual analysis of this graph is complemented by the development of two metrics which describe the permanence of flow and the seasonal predictability of zero flow periods. Finally, a classification of temporary streams in four aquatic regimes in terms of their influence over the development of aquatic life is updated from the existing classifications, with stream aquatic regimes defined as Permanent, Temporary-pools, Temporary-dry and Episodic. While aquatic regimes describe the long-term overall variability of the hydrological conditions of the river section and have been used for many years by hydrologists and ecologists, aquatic states describe the availability of mesohabitats in given periods that determine the presence of different biotic assemblages. This novel concept links hydrological and ecological conditions in a unique way. All these methods were implemented with data from eight temporary streams around the Mediterranean within the MIRAGE project. Their application was a precondition to assessing the ecological quality of these streams.

Abstract: Using data from FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a model independent partial-wave analysis of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} S-wave amplitude from the decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. The S-wave is a generic complex function to be determined directly from the data fit. The P- and D-waves are parameterized by a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes. The measurement of the S-wave amplitude covers the whole elastic range of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} system.

Abstract: We present a search for a pentaquark decaying strongly to $\Xi^-\pi^-$ in $\gamma N$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy up to 25 GeV/c^2. Finding no evidence for such a state in the mass range of 1480 MeV/c^2 to 2400 MeV/c^2, we set limits on the yield and on the cross section times branching ratio relative to $\Xi^*(1530)^0$.

Abstract: We study the decay of D s + mesons into final states involving a K S 0 and report the discovery of Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D s + → K S 0 π − π + π + ( 179 ± 36 events) and D s + → K S 0 π + ( 113 ± 26 events). The branching fraction ratios for the new modes are Γ ( D s + → K S 0 π − π + π + ) Γ ( D s + → K S 0 K − π + π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.04 ± 0.05 and Γ ( D s + → K S 0 π + ) Γ ( D s + → K S 0 K + ) = 0.104 ± 0.024 ± 0.014 .

5. Comunità bentoniche e bioindicatori: messa a punto di nuovi strumenti per la valutazione di impatti specifici nei fiumi

Abstract: Il presente contributo descrive brevemente le attività di IRSA relative alla messa a punto di indicatori, basati sulla componente macrobentonica fluviale, per la valutazione degli impatti antropici e più in generale per la classificazione dello stato ecologico. L'attività si sviluppa di pari passo all'emanazione della Direttiva 2000/60/EC e trae origine in ambito internazionale per poi trasferire i risultati al contesto Nazionale. I risultati ottenuti sono testimoniati da varie pubblicazioni e dalla contribuzione alla definizione di testi normativi, manuali e linee guida, oltre che alla predisposizione del sistema Nazionale della valutazione dello stato ecologico per la componente bentonica fluviale. La tematica di ricerca prevede un'attiva e costante interazione con Agenzie per l'ambiente, Regioni/Province, MATTM e ISPRA, principali utilizzatori dei risultati di queste ricerche applicate e un aggiornamento continuo rispetto all'ambito comunitario. Il contesto europeo dove la biodiversità risulta gravemente minacciata dal continuo sfruttamento delle risorse idriche, che comporta cambiamenti negli usi del territorio e contemporanea presenza di molteplici fattori di alterazione antropica (pressioni) rende la tematica di notevole attualità. La modalità attraverso cui la simultanea presenza di molteplici fattori di pressione (aumento delle concentrazioni di composti organici, nutrienti, contaminanti, sedimenti, alterazione del regime termica, alterazione morfologica e prelievi idrici) influisce sulle comunità biologiche e il tipo di risposta che queste sono in grado di dare sono infatti ancora poco conosciute e richiedono ulteriori ricerche e approfondimenti per districare gli effetti delle singole pressioni antropiche.

È presentato graficamente un quadro di sintesi relativo ai progetti e alle attività svolte, in ambito internazionale e nazionale, insieme ad una selezione dei prodotti - principalmente pubblicazioni scientifiche - realizzate nell'arco di circa 15 anni.

Abstract: Using data collected by the high energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS at Fermilab we performed a Dalitz plot analysis of the Cabibbo favored decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. This study uses 53653 Dalitz-plot events with a signal fraction of {approx} 97%, and represents the highest statistics, most complete Dalitz plot analysis for this channel. Results are presented and discussed using two different formalisms. The first is a simple sum of Breit-Wigner functions with freely fitted masses and widths. It is the model traditionally adopted and serves as comparison with the already published analyses. The second uses a K-matrix approach for the dominant S-wave, in which the parameters are fixed by first fitting K{pi} scattering data and continued to threshold by Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show that the Dalitz plot distribution for this decay is consistent with the assumption of two body dominance of the final state interactions and the description of these interactions is in agreement with other data on the K{pi} final state.

Abstract: Using a large sample of D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first non-parametric analysis of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} amplitudes in D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decay. The technique is similar to the technique used for our non-parametric measurements of the D{sup +} {yields} {bar K}*{sup 0} e{sup +}{nu} form factors. Although these results are in rough agreement with those of E687, we observe a wider S-wave contribution for the {bar K}*{sub 0}{sup 0}(1430) contribution than the standard, PDG [1] Breit-Wigner parameterization. We have some weaker evidence for the existence of a new, D-wave component at low values of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} mass.

Abstract: Using data collected by the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the charm semileptonic branching ratio BR ( D + → ρ 0 μ + ν ) BR ( D + → K ¯ ∗ 0 μ + ν ) . From a sample of 320 ± 44 and 11372 ± 161 D + → ρ 0 μ + ν and D + → K − π + μ + ν events respectively, we find BR ( D + → ρ 0 μ + ν ) BR ( D + → K ¯ ∗ 0 μ + ν ) = 0.041 ± 0.006 ( stat ) ± 0.004 ( syst ) .

Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the weak decay-asymmetry parameter α Λ c in Λ c + → Λ π + decay. Comparing particle with antiparticle decays, we obtain the first measurement of the CP violation parameter A ≡ α Λ c + α Λ ¯ c α Λ c − α Λ ¯ c . We obtain α Λ c = − 0.78 ± 0.16 ± 0.19 and A = − 0.07 ± 0.19 ± 0.24 where errors are statistical and systematic.

Abstract: Using a large sample of D + → K − π + μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first measurements of the helicity basis form factors free from the assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance. We also present the first information on the form factor that controls the s -wave interference discussed in a previous paper by the FOCUS Collaboration. We find reasonable agreement with the usual assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance and measured form factor ratios.

Abstract: We review genetic programming principles, their application to FOCUS data samples, and use the method to study the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay D+ -> K+ pi+ pi- relative to its Cabibbo favored counterpart, D+ -> K- pi+ pi+. We find that this technique is able to improve upon more traditional analysis methods. Abstract: We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays Λ c + → p K + π − and D s + → K + K + π − . We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find BR ( Λ c + → p K + π − ) / BR ( Λ c + → p K − π + ) = ( 0.05 ± 0.26 ± 0.02 ) % and BR ( D s + → K + K + π − ) / BR ( D s + → K − K + π + ) = ( 0.52 ± 0.17 ± 0.11 ) % where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment, we have searched for T violation in charm meson decays using the four-body decay channels $D^0 \to K^-K^+\pi^-\pi^+$, $D^+ \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+$, and $D^+_s \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+$. The T violation asymmetry is obtained using triple-product correlations and assuming the validity of the CPT theorem. We find the asymmetry values to be $A_Tviol (D^0) = 0.010 \pm 0.057(stat.) \pm 0.037(syst.)$, $A_Tviol (D^+) = 0.023 \pm 0.062(stat.) \pm 0.022(syst.)$, and $A_Tviol (D^+_s) = -0.036 \pm 0.067(stat.) \pm 0.023(syst.)$. Each measurement is consistent with no T violation. New measurements of the CP asymmetries for some of these decay modes are also presented., Comment: 17 pages,6 figures,submitted to Phys.Lett.B

Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL–E831), we study the decay of Λ c + baryons into final states containing a Λ hyperon. The branching fractions of Λ c + into Λ π + , Λ π + π + π − and Λ K ¯ 0 K + relative to that into p K − π + are measured to be 0.217 ± 0.013 ± 0.020 , 0.508 ± 0.024 ± 0.024 and 0.142 ± 0.018 ± 0.022 , respectively. We also report new measurements of Γ ( Λ c + → Σ 0 π + ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ π + ) = 1.09 ± 0.11 ± 0.19 , Γ ( Λ c + → Σ 0 π + π + π − ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − ) = 0.26 ± 0.06 ± 0.09 and Γ ( Λ c + → Ξ ( 1690 ) 0 ( Λ K ¯ 0 ) K + ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ K ¯ 0 K + ) = 0.32 ± 0.10 ± 0.04 . Further, an analysis of the subresonant structure for the Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − decay mode is presented.

Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, the authors present a new measurement for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. They measure: {Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})/{Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}) = 0.0295 {+-} 0.0011 {+-} 0.0008. An amplitude analysis has been performed in order to determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant components are the decays D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub 1}(1270){sup +} K{sup -}, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub 1}(1400){sup +}K{sup -} and D{sup 0} {yields} {rho}(770){sup 0}{phi}(1020).

Abstract: Using data collected by the fixed target Fermilab experiment FOCUS, we present several first measurements for the semileptonic decay D0→K¯0π−μ+ν. Using a model that includes a K¯0π− s-wave component, we measure the form factor ratios to be rv=1.71±0.68±0.34 and r2=0.91±0.37±0.10 and the s-wave amplitude to be A=0.35±0.22±0.05GeV−1. Finally, we measure the vector semileptonic branching ratio Γ(D0→K*(892)−μ+ν)Γ(D0→K¯0π−π+)=0.337±0.034±0.013.

Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL-E831), we report on the decay of D 0 mesons into final states containing more than one K S 0 . We present evidence for two Cabibbo favored decay modes, D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K − π + and D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K + π − , and measure their combined branching fraction relative to D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − to be Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K ± π ∓ ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0106 ± 0.0019 ± 0.0010 . Further, we report new measurements of Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0179 ± 0.0027 ± 0.0026 , Γ ( D 0 → K 0 K ¯ 0 ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0144 ± 0.0032 ± 0.0016 , and Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 π + π − ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0208 ± 0.0035 ± 0.0021 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the branching ratio of the Cabibbo suppressed decay D 0 → π − μ + ν relative to the Cabibbo favored decay D 0 → K − μ + ν and an improved measurement of the ratio | f + π ( 0 ) / f + K ( 0 ) | . Our results are 0.074 ± 0.008 ± 0.007 for the branching ratio and 0.85 ± 0.04 ± 0.04 ± 0.01 for the form factor ratio, respectively.

Abstract: Using a large sample of D 0 → K − μ + ν and D 0 → π − μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of the q 2 dependence for the f + ( q 2 ) form factor. These measured f + ( q 2 ) form factors are fit to common parameterizations such as the pole dominance form and compared to recent unquenched Lattice QCD calculations. We find m pole = 1.93 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 GeV / c 2 for D 0 → K − μ + ν and m pole = 1.91 −0.15 +0.30 ± 0.07 GeV / c 2 for D 0 → π − μ + ν and f − ( K ) ( 0 ) / f + ( K ) ( 0 ) = − 1.7 −1.4 +1.5 ± 0.3 .

Abstract: Using a high statistics sample of photo-produced charm particles from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we report on the measurement of the ratio of semileptonic rates Γ ( D + → K π μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) = 0.625 ± 0.045 ± 0.034 . Allowing for the Kπ S-wave interference measured in [J.M. Link, et al., FOCUS Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 544 (2002) 89], we extract the vector to pseudoscalar ratio Γ ( D + → K ¯ * 0 μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) = 0.594 ± 0.043 ± 0.033 and the ratio Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K − π + π + ) = 1.019 ± 0.076 ± 0.065 . Our results show a lower ratio for Γ ( D → K * l ν ) / Γ ( D → K l ν ) than has been reported recently and indicate the current world average branching fractions for the decays D + → K ¯ 0 ( μ + , e + ) ν μ , e are low. Using the world average B ( D + → K − π + π + ) [K. Hagiwara, et al., Particle Data Group Collaboration, Phys. Rev. D 66 (2002) 010001, and 2003 partial update for edition 2004 ( http://pdg.lbl.gov )] we extract B ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν ) = ( 9.27 ± 0.69 ± 0.59 ± 0.61 ) % .

Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS experiment we analyze the D+π− and D0π+ invariant mass distributions. We measure the D 2 ∗0 mass M D 2 ∗0 =(2464.5±1.1±1.9) MeV /c 2 and width Γ D 2 ∗0 =(38.7±5.3±2.9) MeV /c 2 , and the D 2 ∗+ mass M D 2 ∗+ =(2467.6±1.5±0.76) MeV /c 2 and width Γ D 2 ∗+ =(34.1±6.5±4.2) MeV /c 2 . We find evidence for broad structures over background in both the neutral and charged final state. If each is interpreted as evidence for a single L=1, jq=1/2 excited charm meson resonance, the masses and widths are M 1/2 0 =(2407±21±35) MeV /c 2 , Γ 1/2 0 =(240±55±59) MeV /c 2 , and M 1/2 + =(2403±14±35) MeV /c 2 , Γ 1/2 + =(283±24±34) MeV /c 2 , respectively.

Abstract: We report measurements of the charm-anticharm production asymmetries for $\Lambda_c^+$, $\Sigma_c^{++}$, $\Sigma_c^0$, $\Sigma_c^{++*}$, $\Sigma_c^{0*}$, and $\Lambda_c^+(2625)$ baryons from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment FOCUS (E831). These asymmetries are integrated over the region where the spectrometer has good acceptance. In addition, we have obtained results for the photoproduction asymmetries of the $\Lambda_c$ baryons as functions of $p_L$, $p_T^2$, and $x_F$. The integrated asymmetry for $\Lambda_c^+$ production, $(\sigma_{\Lambda_c^+} - \sigma_{\Lambda_c^-}) / (\sigma_{\Lambda_c^+} + \sigma_{\Lambda_c^-})$, is $0.111 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.012$, significantly different from zero. Abstract: Studies of $D{\bar D}$ correlations for a large sample of events containing fully and partially reconstructed pairs of charmed $D$ mesons recorded by the Fermilab photoproduction experiment FOCUS (FNAL-E831) are presented. Correlations between $D$ and ${\bar D}$ mesons are used to study heavy quark production dynamics. We present results for fully and partially reconstructed charm pairs and comparisons to a recent version of \textsc{Pythia} with default parameter settings. Abstract: The FOCUS experiment(FNAL-E831) has used two channels, $\Omega^- \pi^+$ and $\Xi^-K^- \pi^+ \pi^+$,to measure the lifetime of the $\Omega_c^0$ charmed baryon. From a sample of $64 \pm 14$ signal events at a mass of 2.698 GeV/$c^2$, we measure an $\Omega_c^0$ lifetime of $72 \pm 11$ (stat.) $\pm 11$ (sys.) fs, substantially improving upon the current world average.

Abstract: Aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of sexting, defined as "the sharing of images or videos of sexually explicit content", identifying the age groups involved and assessing the possible cultural ties. The study also aimed at providing a clear picture of the phenomenon to educators and parents, an essential starting point for planning any effective educational program.We performed a literature search on Medline (PubMed) database. In addition, the 2011 and 2012 surveys released by Eurispes and Telefono Azzurro were also consulted. "Google Trends" application provided additional details.In Italy teenagers from 12 to 18 years who received sexually oriented material increased from 10.2% in 2011 to 25.9% in 2012. In the USA 69.4% declared having received sexually oriented material, while 66.7% reported having sent it. In Italy, 1 out of 10 teenagers (age range 16-18) found himself in danger for having posted his nude photos online.The practice of sexting involves a wide age range with different legal implications. Teenagers practice sexting to attract attention and prove to be involved in a relationship. Sexting usually does not have any consequence but in rare cases, about 4%, malicious behavior such as sexting for money, to tease or take someone under threat has been reported. Moreover, during the past decade the cases of online harassment increased, especially involving young women. Only by closely monitoring the phenomenon and studying its deeper motivations it could be possible to plan effective educational programs, integrating sexting and the correct use of new media into a structured sexual education project.

Abstract: Using a large sample of D + → K − π + μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic form factor ratios: r v and r 2 . We find r v =1.504±0.057±0.039 and r 2 =0.875±0.049±0.064. Our form factor results include the effects of the s -wave interference discussed in Phys. Lett. B 535 (2002) 43.

Abstract: Using a large sample of charm semileptonic decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic branching ratios. We obtain values of Γ(D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) Γ(D + →K − π + π + ) =0.602±0.010( stat )±0.021( sys ) and Γ(D s + →φμ + ν) Γ(D s + →φπ + ) =0.54±0.033( stat )±0.048( sys ) . Our D + → K ∗0 μ + ν result includes the effects of the s-wave interference discussed in Phys. Lett. B 535 (2002) 43.

Abstract: Using data collected by the Fermilab experiment FOCUS, we measure the lifetime of the charmed baryon (\Xi_{c}^{o}) using the decay channels (\Xi_{c}^{o}\to \Xi ^{-}\pi ^{+}) and (\Xi_{c}^{o}\to \Omega ^{-}K^{+}). From a combined sample of (110\pm 17) events we find (\tau (\Xi_{c}^{o}) =~118^{+ 14}_{- 12} \pm5) fs, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We have studied the Cabibbo suppressed decay (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}K^{*0}(892)) and the Cabibbo favored decays (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}K^{+}K^{-}), (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}\phi) and (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Xi ^{*0}(\Sigma^{+}K^{-})K^{+}) and measured their branching ratios relative to (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}) to be ((7.8\pm 1.8\pm 1.3)%), ((7.1\pm 1.1\pm 1.1)%), ((8.7\pm 1.6\pm 0.6)%) and ((2.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6)%), respectively. The first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report two 90% confidence level limits (\Gamma (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{-}K^{+}\pi ^{+})/\Gamma (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma^{+}K^{*0}(892))

Abstract: Using a large sample of charm semileptonic decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present evidence for a small, even spin K−π+ amplitude that interferes with the dominant K ∗0 component in the D+→K−π+μ+ν final state. Although this interference significantly distorts the D+→K−π+μ+ν decay angular distributions, the new amplitude creates only a very small distortion to the observed kaon pion mass distribution when integrated over the other kinematic variables describing the decay. Our data can be described by K ∗0 interference with either a constant amplitude or broad spin zero resonance.

Abstract: In this Letter we present a measurement of the natural widths of Σ c 0 and Σ c ++ . Using data from the FOCUS experiment, we find Γ ( Σ c 0 )=1.55 +0.41 −0.37 ±0.38 MeV/ c 2 and Γ ( Σ c ++ )=2.05 +0.41 −0.38 ±0.38 MeV/ c 2 . The first errors are statistical, the second systematic. These results are obtained with a sample of 913 Σ c 0 →Λ c + π − decays and 1110 Σ c ++ →Λ c + π + decays. These results are compared with recent theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Over 7000 events containing a fully reconstructed D D pair have been extracted from data recorded by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab. Preliminary results from a study of correlations between D and D mesons are presented. Correlations are used to study perturbative QCD predictions and investigate non-perturbative effects. We also present a preliminary result on the production of Ψ(3770).

Abstract: A high statistics measurement of the Ds+ lifetime from the Fermilab fixed-target FOCUS photoproduction experiment is presented. We describe the analysis of the two decay modes, Ds+ -> phi(1020)pi+ and Ds+ -> \bar{K}*(892)0K+, used for the measurement. The measured lifetime is 507.4 +/- 5.5 (stat.) +/- 5.1 (syst.) fs using 8961 +/- 105 Ds+ -> phi(1020)pi+ and 4680 +/- 90 Ds+ -> \bar{K}*(892)0K+ decays. 44. Organic-carbon deposition in the Cretaceous of the Ionian Basin, NW Greece: The Paquier Event (OAE 1b) revisited

Abstract: We present new stable (C, O) isotopic, biostratigraphic and organic geochemical data for the Vigla Shale Member of the Ionian Zone in NW Greece, in order to characterize organic carbon-rich strata that potentially record the impact of Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs). In a section exposed near Gotzikas (NW Epirus), we sampled a number of decimetre-thick, organic carbon-rich units enclosed within marly, locally silicified, Vigla Limestone (Berriasian-Turonian). All these units are characterized by largely comparable bulk geochemical characteristics, indicating a common marine origin and low thermal maturity. However, the stratigraphically highest of these black shales is further distinguished by its much higher total organic-carbon (TOC) content (28.9 wt%) and Hydrogen Index (HI) (529), and much enriched δ13Corg value (-22.1‰). Planktonic foraminiferal and calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy indicate a lower to middle Albian age for the strata immediately above, and a lower Aptian age for the strata below, the uppermost black shale. In terms of molecular organic geochemistry, the latter black shale is also relatively enriched in specific isoprenoidal compounds (especially monocyclic isoprenoids), whose isotopic values are as high as - 15‰, indicating a substantial archaeal contribution to the organic matter. The striking similarities between the molecular signatures of the uppermost Vigla black shale and coeval organic-rich strata from SE France and the North Atlantic (ODP Site 1049C) indicate that this level constitutes a record of the Paquier Event (OAE 1b). © 2004 Cambridge University Press.

Abstract: Using data collected by the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we report the discovery of the decay modes D^0 --> K- pi+ pi+ pi+ pi- pi- and D^0 --> pi+ pi+ pi+ pi- pi- pi-. With a sample of 48 +/- 10 reconstructed D^0 --> K- pi+ pi+ pi+ pi- pi- decays and 149 +/- 17 reconstructed D^0 --> pi+ pi+ pi+ pi- pi- pi- decays, we measure the following relative branching ratios: ${\Gamma (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^-) / \Gamma (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^-)} = (2.70 \pm 0.58 \pm 0.38) \times 10^{-3}$ ${\Gamma (D^0 \to \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^- \pi^-) / \Gamma (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^-)} = (5.23 \pm 0.59 \pm 1.35) \times 10^{-3}$ ${\Gamma (D^0 \to \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^- \pi^-) / \Gamma (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^-)} = 1.93 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.48$ The first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. The branching fraction of the Cabibbo suppressed six-body decay mode is measured to be a factor of two higher than the branching fraction of the Cabibbo favored six-body decay mode., Comment: To be submitted to Phys. Abstract: FOCUS results from Dalitz plot analysis of D_s+ and D+ to pi+pi-pi+ are presented. The K-matrix formalism is applied to charm decays for the first time to fully exploit the already existing knowledge coming from the light-meson spectroscopy experiments. In particular all the measured dynamics of the S-wave pipi scattering, characterized by broad/overlapping resonances and large non-resonant background, can be properly included. This paper studies the extent to which the K-matrix approach is able to reproduce the observed Dalitz plot and thus help us to understand the underlying dynamics. Abstract: We have performed a search for CPT violation in neutral charm meson oscillations. While flavor mixing in the charm sector is predicted to be small by the Standard Model, it is still possible to investigate CPT violation through a study of the proper time dependence of a CPT asymmetry in right-sign decay rates for $D^0\to K^-\pi^+$ and $\d0b\to K^+\pi^-$. This asymmetry is related to the CPT violating complex parameter $\xi$ and the mixing parameters $x$ and $y$: $A_{CPT}\propto{\rm Re} \xi y-{\rm Im} \xi x$ . Our 95% confidence level limit is $-0.0068, Comment: 12 pages 5 figures

Abstract: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement for the branching ratios of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes D0-->Pi-Pi+ and D0-->K-K+. We measured: Gamma(D0-->K-K+)/Gamma(D0-->Pi-Pi+) = 2.81 +/- 0.10(stat) +/- 0.06(syst), Gamma(D0-->K-K+)/Gamma(D0-->K-Pi+) = 0.0993 +/- 0.0014(stat) +/- 0.0014(syst), and Gamma(D0-->Pi-Pi+)/Gamma(D0-->K-Pi+) = 0.0353 +/- 0.0012 (stat) +/- 0.0006(syst). These values have been combined with other experimental data to extract the ratios of isospin amplitudes and the phase shifts for the D-->KK and D-->PiPi decay channels., Comment: 12 pages, 1 Figure, accepted for publication in Phys.Lett.B

Abstract: Using the FOCUS spectrometer with photon beam energies between 20 and 160 \gev, we confirm the existence of a diffractively photoproduced enhancement in $K^+K^-$ at 1750 \mevcc with nearly 100 times the statistics of previous experiments. Assuming this enhancement to be a single resonance with a Breit-Wigner mass shape, we determine its mass to be $1753.5\pm 1.5\pm 2.3$ \mevcc and its width to be $122.2\pm 6.2\pm 8.0$ \mevcc. We find no corresponding enhancement at 1750 \mevcc in $K^*K$, and again neglecting any possible interference effects we place limits on the ratio $\Gamma (X(1750) \to K^*K)/\Gamma (X(1750) \to K^+K^-)$. Our results are consistent with previous photoproduction experiments, but, because of the much greater statistics, challenge the common interpretation of this enhancement as the $\phi (1680)$ seen in $e^+e^-$ annihilation experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures
