Abstract Owing to the ability of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to control the propagation environment in their vicinity, they have emerged as an appealing solution to enhance the performance of next-generation wireless networks. While the effectiveness of RISs with complete channel state information (CSI) is well-documented, their performance with limited user information remains less explored. This is particularly pronounced when an RIS interferes with nodes in a potentially non-cooperating network, making CSI acquisition challenging. This paper focuses on such scenarios, examining the interference suppression capabilities of an RIS for coexisting secondary and primary users (SUs and PUs) using angular information, achievable even with non-cooperating PUs. We address the coexistence challenge by employing semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and inner majorization minimization (iMM) for RISs with continuous phase control, and propose an enhanced SDR tailored for discrete RISs. Numerical results reveal both SDR and iMM require at least five bits of discrete phase control for moderate interference suppression. They also indicate that interference suppression weakens if the PUs are inside certain angular regions, a limitation that varies with the algorithm but can be mitigated by increasing RIS elements. Ultimately, the coexistence performance of the RIS with a non-cooperative network is validated through full-wave simulations.

Abstract This study investigated sex differences in the development of pulmonary edema and exercise‐induced arterial hypoxemia (EIAH) in well‐trained endurance athletes during near‐maximal exercise in a real‐world setting. Twenty participants (10M vs. 10F; V̇O2peak: 69.3 (8.8) vs. 50.7 (4.1) ml∙kg−1∙min−1) underwent a maximal incremental treadmill test (visit 1) and a time trial on a steep trail (~2.5 km, ~800 m elevation gain) in North Vancouver (visit 2). Pulmonary edema was evaluated using handheld lung ultrasound ~10–15 min post‐exercise and oxygen saturation (SpO2) was monitored using finger pulse oximetry. Males completed the time trial significantly faster than females (M: 31.5 (6.5) vs. F: 40.4 (7.5) min, p = 0.006), while females sustained a higher percentage of their visit 1 heart rate (M: 94 (1) vs. F: 96 (1) %max, p = 0.02). All participants developed EIAH, with no sex differences in end‐exercise SpO2 (M: 89 (4) % vs. F: 90 (3) %, respectively, p = 0.35). There was no evidence of pulmonary edema, assessed through ultrasound b‐line scores, with no differences between sexes (M: 0.3 (1.0) vs. F: 0.5 (1.5), respectively, p = 0.60). Pulmonary edema is an unlikely contributor to EIAH in endurance athletes performing near‐maximal time trial exercise in a real‐world setting.

Abstract Background Lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS), characterized as degeneration of the intervertebral disc and structural changes of the facet joints, is a condition with varying degrees of instability that may lead to pain, canal stenosis, and subsequent surgical intervention. However, the etiology of LDS remains inconclusive. Gut microbiome dysbiosis may stimulate systemic inflammation in various disorders. However, the role of such dysbiosis upon spine health remains under‐studied. The current study assessed the association of gut microbiome dysbiosis in symptomatic patients with or without LDS. Methods A cross‐sectional analysis within the framework of a prospective study was performed. DNA was extracted from fecal samples collected from adult symptomatic patients with (n = 21) and without LDS (n = 12). Alpha and beta diversity assessed differences in fecal microbial community between groups. Taxon‐by‐taxon analysis identified microbial features with differential relative abundance between groups. Subject demographics and imaging parameters were also assessed. Results There was no significant group differences in age, sex, race, body mass index, smoking/alcohol history, pain profiles, spinopelvic alignment, and Modic changes (p >0.05). LDS subjects had significantly higher disc degeneration severity (p = 0.018) and alpha diversity levels compared to non‐LDS subjects (p = 0.002–0.003). Significant differences in gut microbial community structure were observed between groups (p = 0.046). Subjects with LDS exhibited distinct differences at the phylum level, with a significantly higher Firmicutes to Bacteroidota ratio compared to non‐LDS (p = 0.003). Differential relative abundance analysis identified six taxa with significant differences between the two groups, with LDS demonstrating an increase in putative pro‐inflammatory bacteria (Dialister, CAG‐352) and a decrease in anti‐inflammatory bacteria (Slackia, Escherichia‐Shigella). Conclusion This study is the first to report a significant association of gut microbiome dysbiosis and LDS in symptomatic patients, noting pro‐inflammatory bacterial taxa. This work provides a foundation for future studies addressing the role of the gut microbiome in association with spine health and disease.

BackgroundOnline wellness influencers (individuals dispensing unregulated health and wellness advice over social media) may have incentives to oppose traditional medical authorities. Their messaging may decrease the overall effectiveness of public health campaigns during global health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. ObjectiveThis study aimed to probe how wellness influencers respond to a public health campaign; we examined how a sample of wellness influencers on Twitter (rebranded as X in 2023) identified before the COVID-19 pandemic on Twitter took stances on the COVID-19 vaccine during 2020-2022. We evaluated the prevalence of provaccination messaging among wellness influencers compared with a control group, as well as the rhetorical strategies these influencers used when supporting or opposing vaccination. MethodsFollowing a longitudinal design, wellness influencer accounts were identified on Twitter from a random sample of tweets posted in 2019. Accounts were identified using a combination of topic modeling and hand-annotation for adherence to influencer criteria. Their tweets from 2020-2022 containing vaccine keywords were collected and labeled as pro- or antivaccination stances using a language model. We compared their stances to a control group of noninfluencer accounts that discussed similar health topics before the pandemic using a generalized linear model with mixed effects and a nearest-neighbors classifier. We also used topic modeling to locate key themes in influencer’s pro- and antivaccine messages. ResultsWellness influencers (n=161) had lower rates of provaccination stances in their on-topic tweets (20%, 614/3045) compared with controls (n=242 accounts, with 42% or 3201/7584 provaccination tweets). Abstract Metastatic BRAF V600E colorectal cancer (CRC) carries an extremely poor prognosis and is in urgent need of effective new treatments. While the BRAFV600E inhibitor encorafenib in combination with the EGFR inhibitor cetuximab (Enc+Cet) was recently approved for this indication, overall survival is only increased by 3.6 months and objective responses are observed in only 20% of patients. We have found that a limitation of Enc+Cet treatment is the failure to efficiently induce apoptosis in BRAF V600E CRCs, despite inducing expression of the pro-apoptotic protein BIM and repressing expression of the pro-survival protein MCL-1. Here, we show that BRAF V600E CRCs express high basal levels of the pro-survival proteins MCL-1 and BCL-XL, and that combining encorafenib with a BCL-XL inhibitor significantly enhances apoptosis in BRAF V600E CRC cell lines. This effect was partially dependent on the induction of BIM, as BIM deletion markedly attenuated BRAF plus BCL-XL inhibitor-induced apoptosis. As thrombocytopenia is an established on-target toxicity of BCL-XL inhibition, we also examined the effect of combining encorafenib with the BCL-XL -targeting PROTAC DT2216, and the novel BCL-2/BCL-XL inhibitor dendrimer conjugate AZD0466. Combining encorafenib with DT2216 significantly increased apoptosis induction in vitro, while combining encorafenib with AZD0466 was well tolerated in mice and further reduced growth of BRAF V600E CRC xenografts compared to either agent alone. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that combined BRAF and BCL-XL inhibition significantly enhances apoptosis in pre-clinical models of BRAF V600E CRC and is a combination regimen worthy of clinical investigation to improve outcomes for these patients.

Abstract Virus diseases are a major production constraint for pumpkin. Recessive resistance to squash leaf curl China virus and tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus has been mapped in Cucurbita moschata (Duchesne ex Poir.) breeding line AVPU1426 to chromosomes 7 and 8, respectively. Molecular markers tightly associated with the resistance loci have been developed and were able to correctly predict resistance and susceptibility with an accuracy of 99% for squash leaf curl China virus resistance and 94.34% for tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus in F2 and back cross populations derived from the original resistance source AVPU1426. The markers associated with resistance are recommended for use in marker-assisted breeding.

Summary: Background: Globally, fall-related injuries are a substantial problem, and 80% of fatal falls occur in low-income and middle-income countries. We aimed to measure time from injury to hip-fracture surgery in people aged 50 years or older living in low-income and middle-income regions, as well as to measure the proportion of patients with surgical stabilisation of their hip fracture within 72 h of admission to hospital and to identify risk factors associated with surgical delay. Methods: For this secondary analysis, we analysed data collected from Africa, Latin America, China, India, and Asia (excluding China and India) for the International Orthopaedic Multicentre Study in Fracture Care (INORMUS) between March 29, 2014, and June 15, 2022. Patients from INORMUS were included in this analysis if they were aged 50 years or older and had an isolated, primary hip fracture sustained from a ground-level fall. Staff at participating hospitals identified patients with musculoskeletal injury and referred them for assessment of eligibility. We report time from injury to surgery as three distinct time periods: time from injury to hospital admission, time from admission to surgery, and a total time from injury to surgery. Date and time of injury were self-reported by patients at the time of study recruitment. If time to hospital admission after injury exceeded 24 h, patients reported the primary reason for delayed admission. Reasons for surgery, no surgery, and surgical delay were reported by the treating team. For patients undergoing surgery, multivariable regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for surgical delay. Findings: 4486 adults aged 50 years or older with an isolated, primary hip fracture were enrolled in INORMUS from 55 hospitals in 24 countries. Countries were grouped into five regions: Africa (418 [9·3%] of 4486), Latin America (558 [12·4%]), China (1680 [37·4%]), India (1059 [23·6%]) and Asia (excluding China and India; 771 [17·2%]). Of 4486 patients, 3805 (84·8%) received surgery. The rate of surgery was similar in all regions except in Africa, where only 193 (46·3%) of 418 patients had surgery. Overall, 2791 (62·2%) of 4486 patients were admitted to hospital within 24 h of injury. However, 1019 (22·7%) of 4486 patients had delayed hospital admission of 72 h or more from injury. The two most common reasons for delayed admission of more than 24 h were transfer from another hospital (522 [36·2%] of 1441) and delayed care-seeking because patients thought the injury would heal on its own (480 [33·3%]). Once admitted to hospital, 1451 (38·1%) of 3805 patients who received surgery did so within 72 h (median 4·0 days [IQR 1·7–6·0]). Regional variation was seen in the proportion of patients receiving surgery within 72 h of hospital admission (92 [17·9%] of 514 in Latin America, 53 [27·5%] of 193 in Africa, 454 [30·9%] of 1471 in China, 318 [44·4%] of 716 in Asia [excluding China and India], and 534 [58·6%] of 911 in India). Of all 3805 patients who received operative treatment, 2353 (61·8%) waited 72 h or more from hospital admission. From time of injury, the proportion of patients who were surgically stabilised within 72 h was 889 (23·4%) of 3805 (50 [9·7%] of 517 in Latin America, 31 [16·1%] of 193 in Africa, 277 [18·8%] of 1471 in China, 189 [26·4%] of 716 in Asia [excluding China and India], and 342 [37·5%] of 911 in India). Interpretation: Access to surgery within 72 h of hospital admission was poor, with factors that affected time to surgery varying by region. Data are necessary to understand existing pathways of hip-fracture care to inform the local development of quality-improvement initiatives. The integration of trees into diverse land-use systems holds potential for India to meet nationally determined contribution (NDC) targets under the Paris Climate Agreement. With a target of sequestering 2.5–3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent by 2030, the study focused on the widespread and economically viable eucalyptus-based agroforestry, practiced widely in various planting geometries tailored to meet industrial end-use requirements. In this context, a detailed study was conducted to quantify the influence of five planting geometries [3 m × 3 m, 6 × 1.5 m, 17 × 1 × 1 m (paired row) and two boundary plantations (east–west and north–south directions) at 2 m away from tree to tree] of eucalyptus on intercrops [dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata)—barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) rotation] biomass, soil properties, and carbon stock of the system during 2009–2016. Results revealed that biomass accumulation of different tree components was 62.50%–74.09% in stem; 6.59%–9.14% in branch; 3.18%–5.73% in leaves; 12.20%–20.44% in stump roots; and 1.71%–3.48% in fine roots across the planting geometries. The mean carbon content of the stem, branch, leaves, and roots was 49.00, 47.00, 43.00, and 49.00%, respectively. Over the 8-year period, geometry of 3 × 3 m performed better in terms of total biomass production (344.60 Mg ha− 1 by tree biomass and 62.53 Mg ha−1 by intercrops). The independent parameter, DBH2H (DBH: diameter at breast height and H: tree height), was found to be a very good predictor of dry weight, followed by DBH alone. Among various functions (linear, allometric, logistic, Gompertz, Chapman, and exponential), the best-fit equation was allometric, i.e., B = 300.96 × DBH2H0.93 (adjusted R2 = 0.96) for eucalyptus based on universal model adequacy and validation criteria. The carbon sequestration rate was maximum (20.79 Mg C ha−1 year−1) in 3 × 3 m followed by 17 × 1 × 1 m. The total carbon stock of eucalyptus-based system (tree + crop + soil) varied significantly under different planting geometries and sole crop rotation (dhaincha–barley). The higher carbon stock (237.27 Mg ha−1) was obtained from 3 × 3 m spacing and further partitioning carbon stock in trees—166.29 Mg ha−1, crops—25.01 Mg ha−1 and soil—45.97 Mg ha−1. The paired row spacing (17 × 1 × 1 m) yielded higher crop yield and net returns (Rs. 600,475 ha−1), underscoring wide spacing’s role in system productivity and sustainability. Tree-based systems were valuable components of agriculture, advocating for their widespread adoption to reduce CO2 emissions and generate income through carbon credits. These findings will provide crucial insights into sustainable land-use practices and advance India’s commitment toward adaptation of climate change mitigation strategies.

Metascience scholars have long been concerned with tracking the use of rhetorical language in scientific discourse, oftentimes to analyze the legitimacy and validity of scientific claim-making. Psychology, however, has only recently become the explicit target of such metascientific scholarship, much of which has been in response to the recent crises surrounding replicability of quantitative research findings and questionable research practices. The focus of this paper is on the rhetoric of psychological measurement and validity scholarship, in both the theoretical and methodological and empirical literatures. We examine various discourse practices in published psychological measurement and validity literature, including: (a) clear instances of rhetoric (i.e., persuasion or performance); (b) common or rote expressions and tropes (e.g., perfunctory claims or declarations); (c) metaphors and other “literary” styles; and (d) ambiguous, confusing, or unjustifiable claims. The methodological approach we use is informed by a combination of conceptual analysis and exploratory grounded theory, the latter of which we used to identify relevant themes within the published psychological discourse. Examples of both constructive and useful or misleading and potentially harmful discourse practices will be given. Our objectives are both to contribute to the critical methodological literature on psychological measurement and connect metascience in psychology to broader interdisciplinary examinations of science discourse.

A review of the role of sulfur (S) in crop production is presented, with a particular emphasis on major crops including corn (Zea mays L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Specifically, S demand and availability, nutritive effects in improving yield, its effect on quality in major crops, different diagnostic methods, and future perspectives of S research are discussed. Sulfur plays a crucial role in synthesizing proteins, chlorophyll, enzymes, and vitamins, as well as influencing general metabolic and photosynthetic mechanisms. In the early 1950s, S deficiency was only noted in specific soils, but now it is becoming universally deficient. The amount of plant-available S in the soil has decreased by 34–86 % between 2000 and 2020, leaving crop production at risk. The reasons for widespread S deficiency include lower industrial atmospheric deposition, stricter environmental laws, prevailing management practices such as selection of high-yielding varieties, increased use of low S fertilizers, decreased use of S containing fungicides and insecticides, and in some cases reduced tillage intensity. Nonetheless, researchers have attempted to trans-genetically produce more S-use-efficient crops, explored possibilities where S metabolites could contribute to synergism in interactions of plant and rhizosphere microorganisms in enhancing S mineralization. Moreover, proven strategies tailored to S are necessary to increase site-specific management. Owing to the significant role of S in crop production, it is important to explore improvement in S uptake, S use efficiency, systematic S fertilizing strategies, and precise and timely S diagnostic tools.
