Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions diagnosed in the foot and presents with many treatment options. However, there is still scanty evidence supporting the effectiveness and use of Positional Release Therapy (PRT) in the management of the condition. In this study, we reported a case of a 35-year-old housewife who was diagnosed medically with plantar fasciitis of 6 months duration. Conservative management using ultrasound, stretching/strengthening exercises, ankle joint mobilisation and home programme proved ineffective during the first two weeks of her management with VAS score still 6/10 from 8/10 at presentation. However, treatment modification using PRT nullified the patient's symptoms during the other two weeks of the rehabilitation protocol (VAS = 2/10). Foot and Ankle Ability Measure was 18 pre-intervention and after the PRT for 2 weeks became 4 points. The findings of this report suggest that PRT should be incorporated in the physiotherapy management of patients with plantar fasciitis.&nbsp

Situation selection is an emotion regulation strategy consisting in choosing a future emotional situation. Past research showed that Situation selection triggers a decrease in negative experience, exocrine reactions and respiratory activity, while maintaining stable positive experience. In this study, we wanted to replicate these observations and test emotional responses that follow an Illusory choice, i.e., when the chosen situation is not available and replaced by another. Sixty-eight participants watched emotional pictures, either in a condition in which the images were imposed, or in a condition in which they could perform a choice. In these latter trials, participants saw either the chosen option (Situation selection) or the non-selected option (Illusory choice). Continuous recordings of experience and physiological arousal showed that, unlike Situation selection, Illusory choice decreased positive experience but not negative experience. Strikingly, however, we showed that having the choice decreased skin conductance and respiratory arousal, regardless of whether the choice was respected or not. These results have important implications regarding emotion regulation through Situation selection, since having the choice about the upcoming emotional situation, no matter if we really end up in this situation, gives a sense of control that may be sufficient to alleviate physiological responses to stressors.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected infectious disease that is endemic in resource-constrained settings. Nigeria has the highest cases of schistosomiasis in sub-Sahara Africa with about 29 million infected. This study was carried out with the aim to identify some risk factors of schistosomiasis and as well assess the efficacy of some urine physical parameters for a rapid screening procedure. Terminal urine samples were collected, analyzed with reagent strips and centrifuged at 400 revolution per minute for 4 minutes. Microscope (x10 objective) was used to examine and count the eggs. Raw data were imported into Epi Info software (version 7.1.2.0) from Microsoft Excel 2010 for analyses. About 357 respondents with a mean age of 9.39±2.06 years were sampled. Overall prevalence and intensity were 10.36% (7.61-13.96) and 322.2 eggs/10ml of urine samples respectively. Males had a higher prevalence [15.42% (10.86-20.97)] and mean intensity [77.5 eggs/10ml] and were 6 times more likely to be infected [COR (95% CI): 6.31 (2.17-25.09)]. Age group 11-15 years recorded higher prevalence (19.39% [12.10-28.61]) and intensity (110.9 eggs/10ml) and was 3 times [COR (95% CI): 3.21 (1.51-6.84)] more likely to be infected. Urine samples with faint yellow colour recorded the highest prevalence of 13.67% (8.43-20.52) and were 4 times [COR (95% CI): 4.33 (1.12-28.39)] more liable to infestation compared to the colourless samples. Age and gender are risk factors with faint yellow colour as the only reliable rapid diagnostic index. Provision of potable water and treatment with Praziquantel should be done urgently.

The high cost of Maize as energy source in fish feed has necessitated the need to search for low cost and locally available indigenous sources. A six months feeding trial was conducted to examine the effects of replacing maize with roasted rice chaff as a dietary energy source on the growth of juveniles of Clarias gariepinus using Completely Randomized block Design with five different treatments. The fishes were subjected to five different inclusion levels of roasted rice chaff meal (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). The trial was conducted in a 50litres plastic bowl with replicates and feeding was done initially at 3% body weight, but the quantity of feeds was adjusted based on the new weight gain. The measurements of the fishes were carried out biweekly according to standard methods and procedures. The Roasted rice chaff meal (RRCM) contains 5.93% crude protein, 14.53% crude fibre, 0.92% moisture content, while Ash content, crude lipid and carbohydrates had 19.98%, 3.28% and 55.36% respectively. Fishes fed 100% RRCM recorded the best growth performance in body weight (435.10 ± 20.60gm), total length (45.30 ± 0.70cm), Specific growth rate (1.44 ± 0.01), Feed Conversion Ratio (2.50 ± 0.04) and Feed Intake (92.00 ± 3.40). While the least growth ware observed in 0% RRCM. However, all the physico-chemical parameters measured are within the recommended range for fish culture. Therefore, the result obtained shows that roasted rice chaff can replace maize as a source of energy in Clarias gariepinus.juveniles diets without any negative effect.

Background Disease of the pilonidal sinus is a common condition that affects mainly young adults. Options for management include excision of the sinus tracts, leaving the wound open to heal by secondary intention. The aim of this study was to compare wound healing with dialkylcarbamoyl chloride (DACC)‐coated dressings versus alginate dressings. Methods This multicentre trial randomized consecutive patients undergoing surgery for pilonidal disease to postoperative wound care with either DACC‐coated or alginate dressings. The primary outcome was the proportion of wounds healed after 75 days. Secondary outcomes were the local status of wounds during the healing process, the quality assessment of the dressings by the patient, and the time needed to return to usual activities. Results A total of 246 patients were included: 120 in the DACC‐coated group and 126 in the alginate group. In per‐protocol analysis, there were significantly more patients with completely healed wounds after 75 days in the DACC group than in the alginate group: 78 of 103 (75·7 per cent) versus 58 of 97 (60 per cent) respectively (odds ratio 2·55, 95 per cent c.i. 1·12 to 5·92; P = 0·023). During follow‐up, wounds with alginate dressings had more fibrin than those with DACC‐coated dressings, but the difference was not significant (P = 0·079). There was no difference between the two arms in patients' assessment of the dressings. Conclusion The number of wounds completely healed at 75 days was significantly higher for DACC‐coated compared with alginate dressings. However, the preplanned, clinically significant improvement in healing of 20 per cent was not reached. Since lack of empathy is an important indicator of violent behaviors, researchers need consistent and valid measures. This study evaluated the practical significance of a potential physiological correlate of empathy compared to a traditional self-report questionnaire in 18 male violent offenders and 21 general population controls. Empathy skills were assessed with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) questionnaire. Heart-Rate Variability (HRV) was assessed with an electrocardiogram. The RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive beat-to-beat Differences), an HRV index implicated in social cognition, was calculated. There were no group differences in IRI scores. However, RMSSD was lower in the offender group. Positive correlations between RMSSD and IRI subscales were found for controls only. We conclude that psychometric measures of empathy do not discriminate incarcerated violent offenders, and that the incorporation of psychophysiological measures, such as HRV, could be an avenue for forensic research on empathy to establish translatable evidence-based information.

Lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic have put people in stressful situations. Recent research showed elevated levels of anxiety and depression during this period, but no study has so far evaluated to what extent emotions and regulation difficulties were perceived by people as having changed with the lockdown. This was the major aim of the present study, together with investigating whether the emotion regulation strategy of "Refocus on planning" could be an effective strategy in this context. With a 1 time-point online survey, 635 French-, Italian-, and English- speaking participants (57.6% males, mean age of 48.48 years, SD = 15.7) evaluated (a) emotion changes, (b) anxiety, depression, and difficulties in emotion regulation, and (c) use of planning. Participants retrospectively indicated their state when thinking about the period of the Spring 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, as well as their state when thinking about the period just before. Results show that the lockdown period was associated with a perceived increase in negative and positive feelings, as well as a perceived increase in anxiety, depression, and regulation difficulties. Despite people used less planning during the lockdown, absolute and heightened use of planning was associated with more positive emotions, as well as less negative emotions, depression symptoms and difficulties in emotion regulation, whereas anxiety symptoms were lower only when more planning was adopted. This study suggests that planning is an effective emotion regulation strategy. More importantly, planning works as soon as implemented, suggesting it is never too late to start planning to alleviate emotion-related symptoms and difficulties. Background Colonoscopy is the gold standard for evaluation of inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), yet entails cumbersome preparations and risks of injury. Existing non-invasive prognostic tools are limited in their diagnostic power. Moreover, transcriptomics of colonic biopsies have been inconclusive in their association with clinical features. Our aim was to assess the utility of host transcriptomics of fecal wash samples of IBD patients compared to controls. Methods In this prospective cohort study, we obtained biopsies and fecal-wash samples from IBD patients and controls undergoing lower endoscopy. We performed RNAseq of biopsies and matching fecal-washes, and associated them with endoscopic and histological inflammation status. We also performed fecal mass-spectrometry proteomics on a subset of samples. We inferred cell compositions using computational deconvolution and used classification algorithms to identify informative genes. Results We analyzed biopsies and fecal washes from 39 patients (19 IBD, 20 controls). Host fecal-transcriptome carried information that was distinct from biopsy RNAseq and fecal proteomics. Transcriptomics of fecal washes, yet not of biopsies, from patients with histological inflammation were significantly correlated to one another (p=5.3*10–12). Fecal-transcriptome was significantly more powerful in identifying histological inflammation compared to transcriptome of intestinal biopsies (150 genes with area-under-the-curve >0.9 in fecal samples versus 10 genes in biopsy RNAseq). Fecal samples were enriched in inflammatory monocytes, regulatory T cells, natural killer-cells and innate lymphoid cells. Figure 1 - Fecal-wash host transcriptome predicts histological inflammation. Furthermore, it opens the way to identifying important correlates and therapeutic targets that may be obscure using biopsy transctriptomics.

This study investigates the joint impact of facade geometry and associated sunlight patterns on occupant subjective perception and physiological responses through a novel experimental method coupling physically-based simulations shown in virtual reality with a wearable biometric device. A total of 72 subjects participated in a study combining three facade configurations of an equal aperture ratio with different scenarios of space use (a social or working context). The facade variations –a non-uniform distribution of openings (“Irregular”), a uniform distribution of openings (“Regular”) and venetian blinds (“Blinds”)– were applied to an interior scene with clear sky and direct sun penetration. Subjective evaluations (how pleasant, interesting, and exciting the space was perceived) and physiological responses (heart rate and skin conductance) were collected during exposure to facade variations, while a neutral scene was used to record baseline physiological responses. Results revealed that facade and sunlight pattern geometry significantly influenced subjective responses for both context scenarios, while subsequent analyses showed differences mostly between the Irregular and Regular conditions, with the former being evaluated more positively. Facade and sunlight pattern geometry affected heart rate responses, but not skin conductance responses. In particular, participants showed a larger decrease in heart rate while exposed to the Irregular condition compared to the Blinds. Context scenarios influenced evaluations of interest and excitement. Findings are particularly relevant for applications in architecture and lighting, demonstrating that facade elements and their interaction with light can influence occupant subjective and physiological responses, and showcasing the potential of the presented method for investigating human perception.

Background Emotion regulation alters the trajectories of emotional responses and, when effective, transforms the emotional responses to help individuals adapt to their environment. Previous research has mainly focused on the efficiency of regulation strategies performed individually at a given time. Yet, in daily life, it is likely that several strategies are often combined. Thus, we question in this study the combinatorial efficiency of two emotion regulation strategies, Situation selection and Emotional suppression. Methods In a within-subject design, sixty-five participants were asked to implement either no strategy, Situation selection only, Emotional suppression only, or both strategies together (four conditions) while looking at various emotionally charged images. Experience, expressivity, and physiological arousal were recorded throughout the viewing. Repeated-measures ANOVAs and corrected post-hoc tests were used for analyzing the data. Results The results of the combined strategies showed that Emotional suppression canceled the beneficial impact of Situation selection on negative experience, while significantly increasing the impact on cardiac activity. The use of both strategies together had a greater effect on respiratory function with an enhanced decrease in respiratory rate and amplitude. Conclusions The combinatorial effect of emotion regulation strategies is different according to the emotional response that the individual needs to regulate. The simultaneous use of Situation selection and Emotional suppression could be particularly beneficial to relieve physiological symptoms.

Reducing the energy consumption needed for creating suitable indoor conditions has become a significant issue on a global scale. The building’s envelope and service systems have the most important influence over the amount of energy consumed. This aspect is related to reducing the heat flux across the building envelope in summer conditions and preventing the condensation and infiltration risk in the winter period. The research regarding ventilated façades has advanced taking into account these advantages, which emphasized the need to study and create constructive solutions adapted to the conditions. In this context, this paper represents a brief introduction to ventilated façades solutions, taking into account the definition, their characteristics, the principal constructive elements, the main types of ventilated facades, and last, but not least, their advantages and disadvantages. The authors believe that the study is critical in fully comprehending the characteristics of these systems and their primary components, as well as designing and implementing them in accordance with current environmental needs. It is anticipated that comprehending this concept, as well as its evolution and trends, can contribute in the resolving of a number of ecological and societal issues.

Situation selection consists in choosing an upcoming emotional situation in order to regulate emotions. It was found to be a strategy with powerful effects on emotional negative experience and physiological arousal. Situation selection is supposed to be efficient through the empowering effect of choice itself. In the present study, we wanted to replicate results on Situation selection efficiency and explore its limits by examining the implications of a non-meaningful choice procedure preceding the emotional trigger, expecting that even this non-meaningful choice would be regulatory. Sixty-one participants (40 females, mean age 21.4 years) were presented with emotional pictures, either with no particular instruction (no regulation) or with the task to make a choice between two options. This task was either a classical Situation selection task, with the label corresponding to the image that could be later seen (Word Situation selection), or non-meaningful options (Non-word Situation selection). The effect of Situation selection for negative experience was replicated. Effects on physiological arousal showed reduced heart rate and respiratory rate at the end of the viewing period, particularly for positive viewing. In negative viewing, Non-word Situation selection did not reduce negative experience, but did reinforce the calming effect of Situation selection on heart and respiratory rate. These results confirm Situation selection as a valid emotion regulation strategy, particularly regarding physiological arousal. Significant understanding of the options seems to constitute a strategic part of the regulation on the full spectrum of emotion responses but is not mandatory if only some specific physiological responses are targeted.

‘Gliptins’ is the nickname given to a group of anti-diabetic medicines-DPP-4 inhibitors, such as sitagliptin, vildagliptin, sexagliptin, linagliptin, alogliptin and teneligliptin, which are used with metformin for combination therapy of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Advantages of this combined therapy are low risks of hypoglycemia and weight gain compared with other classes of anti-diabetic drugs. In the present study efforts, were made to develop and validate a bioanalytical method for simultaneous estimation of metformin and teneligliptin in human plasma by LC-MS/MS with an application to quantification of plasma samples obtained from the comparative pharmacokinetic studies on healthy human volunteers. The developed method for simultaneous determination and quantification of teneligliptin and metformin in human plasma was also validated as per the US-FDA guidelines. The validation parameters were found to be within the specified regulatory limits, hence the method acceptable. The present method had a short run time (3.5min) and easy extraction process. Therefore, developed method was found to be simple, specific, highly selective, sensitive and reproducible. This was applied for the analysis of volunteer plasma samples obtained from comparative pharmacokinetic study. On the basis of comparison of AUC0-t, the relative bioavailability of test preparation was found to be 97.64% and 91.37% for teneligliptin and metformin, with respect to that of the reference preparation.

Aim This study focused on children aged zero to six years with suspected single-dose paracetamol poisoning, which has not been investigated in Denmark. We evaluated the incidence of liver injuries and the use of activated charcoal and N-acetylcysteine treatment. Methods Our retrospective study was performed in three paediatric hospital centres from 2001 to 2012. Data on symptoms, time of ingestion, blood biochemistry, treatment and adverse reactions were collected. The results were evaluated against the Rumack-Matthew nomogram. Results We identified 221 children (58% male), with a mean age of 2.67 ± 1.05 years. Activated charcoal treatment was given in 87% of cases, but only 15% of the children received treatment within one hour of the suspected paracetamol poisoning. Although 80% of the children received N-acetylcysteine treatment, only one case (0.5%) had a toxic plasma paracetamol level according to the treatment nomogram. Abdominal pain or vomiting was associated with higher paracetamol levels in plasma. None of the children developed liver injuries. Conclusion We found a low incidence of significant poisoning and liberal use of N-acetylcysteine and activated charcoal treatment in Danish children aged zero to six years with suspected paracetamol poisoning. Vomiting or abdominal pain was associated with elevated plasma paracetamol levels. No liver injuries were reported.

The high level of flood risk that occurs in Semarang city, raises the level of anxiety in the community , so it needs to have integration in community disaster education . The purpose of this paper is to inform the public profile of the flood prone areas in the form of non-spatial data base ( behavior towards disaster , habits and aspirations of the community in the face of disaster), and a disaster for developing learning models in shaping the character of the community . While the methods used are qualitative and Research and Development ( RnD ) The results showed that there is still a lack of knowledge in the society faces a disaster , it is shown by the lack of social and physical infrastructure of flood disaster . On the other hand to increase the capacity of communities to deal with disasters , disaster on the community learning can be done with the participation of the community ranging from mitigation , preparedness , disaster response , to recovery .Lessons of disaster is one of the strategies in the character building , because learning through disaster also internalized values ? ? of at least three characters , namely social care , care for the environment , and creative . Social care is realized by mutual cooperation , caring environment with hygiene and environmental conservation activities , and creative embodied through effective post-disaster management .

Background and Objectives: Emotion regulation involves attempts to influence emotion unfolding and may target experiential, expressive and physiological responses. Several strategies can be used, such as reappraisal (re-evaluating the emotional situation to reduce its emotional meaning) or distraction (turning the attention toward non-emotional aspects of the situation). Previous research on these regulation strategies produced contrasting results regarding their efficiency and we hypothesize that this could be due to individual differences such as trait anxiety. Design and Methods: Participants (N = 77) were confronted with negative pictures and we examined the differential emotional reactivity according to trait anxiety, followed by a comparison of the efficiency of reappraisal and distraction in reducing emotional responses. Results: Results show that trait anxiety has no impact on reactivity at the experiential and expressive levels, but has an impact at the physiological level, where high anxiety individuals show increased cardiac orienting effect, as well as higher skin conductance and respiratory rate. Regarding regulation, reappraisal and distraction successfully reduce emotional experience and expressivity, but not physiological arousal. Conclusions: Such contrasting results involve that high trait anxiety individuals might benefit from the use of other kinds of strategies than reappraisal and distraction, some that may successfully target physiological responses.

A small number of psychiatric inpatients displays a large proportion of Violent Behaviors (VB). These can have a major impact on both victims and patients themselves. This study explored personal, situational and institutional risk factors and their combined effects, which could lead to repetitive VB (three or more assaults). Data from 4518 patients, aged 18 to 65, admitted to an acute psychiatric care facility, were included in the analysis. VB, defined as physical aggressions against another person, were assessed by the Staff Observation Aggression Scale-Revised. 414 VB were reported during the study period, involving 199 patients. 0.75 % of all patients were repetitively violent and committed 43% of all VB. Factors that were linked to repetitive VB were living in sheltered housing before hospitalization, suffering from schizophrenia with substance abuse comorbidity, cumulating hospitalization days and some situational factors, like the fact of being in nursing offices and pharmacies. When all personal, situational and institutional factors were considered together, the combined effects of length of stay and living in sheltered housing increased the risk of repetitive VB. We have identified a small group of vulnerable patients for whom new modalities of inter-institutional networking should be developed to prevent repetitive VB.

The Safe Passage Study is an international, prospective study of approximately 12 000 pregnancies to determine the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) upon stillbirth and the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A key objective of the study is to elucidate adverse effects of PAE upon binding to serotonin (5-HT) 1A receptors in brainstem homeostatic networks postulated to be abnormal in unexplained stillbirth and/or SIDS. We undertook a feasibility assessment of 5-HT1A receptor binding using autoradiography in the medulla oblongata (6 nuclei in 27 cases). 5-HT1A binding was compared to a reference dataset from the San Diego medical examiner’s system. There was no adverse effect of postmortem interval ≤100 h. The distribution and quantitated values of 5-HT1A binding in Safe Passage Study cases were essentially identical to those in the reference dataset, and virtually identical between stillbirths and live born fetal cases in grossly non-macerated tissues. The pattern of binding was present at mid-gestation with dramatic changes in binding levels in the medullary 5-HT nuclei over the second half of gestation; there was a plateau at lower levels in the neonatal period and into infancy. This study demonstrates feasibility of 5-HT1A binding analysis in the medulla in the Safe Passage Study.

Popular opinions link colours and emotions. Yet, affective connotations to colours are heterogeneous (e.g. red represents anger and love) partly because they relate to different contexts. Despite insufficient evidence, colours are used in applied settings (health, marketing, etc.) for their supposed effects on cognitive and affective functioning. Summarizing the literature, we invite for systematic research to investigate when and how colours link with affective phenomena. We need to i) distinguish between situations in which colours are physically shown or linguistically treated, ii) specify types of affective processes (e.g. emotion, mood, preference), and iii) investigate cross-cultural differences. Having these needs in mind, we initiated an international online survey on semantic colour-emotion associations. We outline theoretical considerations and present the survey’s design.

Yoga practice, even in the short term, is supposed to enhance wellbeing and counteract psychopathology through modification of emotion reactivity. Yoga teaches that emotional responses may be less pronounced with longer and more frequent practice, and potentially when people perform yoga for mental rather than physical reasons. We tested 36 yoga practitioners of varying experience (between 6 months and 11 years of practice). We assessed participants’ self-reported emotional experience and peripheral physiological reactions (heart rate, skin conductance, respiration) when seeing positive and negative pictures. Results were analyzed as a function of the years of, frequency of, and reasons for yoga practice. We found a heart rate increase with the degree participants performed yoga for mental reasons. In addition, years of yoga practice were significantly associated with reduced abdominal respiratory rate when facing negative pictures, speaking in favor of reduced arousal with yoga experience. Finally, regarding frequency of practice, a higher frequency in the last month was linked to less negative and positive experiences as well as a reduced abdominal respiratory amplitude when viewing positive pictures. Altogether, these results demonstrate that intense short-term yoga practice might relate to a (i) decrease in the intensity of self-reported emotional experiences and (ii) deepened respiration. Short-term effects might be shaped by what participants expect as practice benefits. However, several years of practice might be needed to decrease respiratory arousal in the face of negative situations, which likely is a manifestation of an evolution in the emotion regulation process.

Background & Objectives: This study was undertaken to assess the correlation between Vertical cup/disc (C/D) ratio found on ophthalmologic examination in Primary open angle glaucoma and loss variance which indicates local heterogenicity of visual field defect. Severity of scotomas was also assessed. Material & Methods: After comprehensive eye examination and glaucoma evaluation, 27 subjects (total 47 eyes) diagnosed with primary open angle glaucoma underwent visual field analyses on Octopus 900 computerised perimetry analyser. Data was tabulated and statistical tests were applied. Results: We found a statistically significant correlation between C/D ratio and loss variance at pInterpretation: Patients with open angle glaucoma show progressive cupping of optic disc with more propensity of retinal fiber damage giving rise to worsening visual field defects. Regular evaluation with automated perimetry is of utmost importance and can help in better management of glaucoma.

So far, limited research has been carried out to better understand the interplay between the emotions, the use of emotion regulation strategies, and the well-being of professional caregivers of People with Dementia (PwD). This pilot study ( N = 43 professional caregivers) aimed to (1) describe the type and frequency of emotions experienced at work; (2) analyze the associations between experienced emotions, emotion regulation strategies, and well-being; and (3) test whether the use of specific emotion regulation strategies moderates the relationship between experienced emotions and emotional exhaustion. In the challenging context of professionally caring for PwD, results suggest that (1) caregivers experience positive emotions more frequently than negative emotions; (2) caregivers using relatively inappropriate regulation strategies are more likely to experience negative emotions, less likely to experience positive emotions, and have poorer physical and mental health; and (3) expressive suppression significantly moderates the relationship between positive experienced emotions and emotional exhaustion.

Pain is a hallmark of almost all bodily ailments and can be modulated by agents, including analgesics and anesthetics that suppress pain signals in the central nervous system. Defects in the modulatory systems, including the endogenous pain-inhibitory pathways, are a major factor in the initiation and chronicity of pain. Thus, pain modulation is particularly applicable to the practice of medicine. This review summarizes the existing literature on pain modulation. Here, we critically reviewed the literature from PubMed on pain modulation published primarily within the past 5 years in high impact journals. Specifically, we have discussed important anatomical landmarks of pain modulation and outlined the endogenous networks and underlying mechanisms of clinically relevant pain modulatory methods. The Gate Control Theory is briefly presented with discussion on the capacity of pain modulation to cause both hyper- and hypoalgesia. An emphasis has been given to highlight key areas in pain research that, because of unanswered questions or therapeutic potential, merit additional scientific scrutiny. The information presented in this paper would be helpful in developing novel therapies, metrics, and interventions for improved patient management.

Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, (Linneaus, 1758) is an important aquaculture species in Nigeria and other parts of the world. We obtained specimens (3,5-13,00 cm total length; 1,7 to 49 g) from Jabi Reservoir, Nigeria, and exposed them to 18-38o C. The frequency of opercular beats (i.e.respiratory rate) was determined from videos. At room temperature (28o C), the average frequency of opercular beats per minute for the weight groups of 1, 7 – 3,3; 4,0 – 7,0; 11,0 – 20 and 40 – 49g were 218, 190, 167 and 119 respectively. It decreased to 153, 137, 94 and 77 beats respectively when the water temperature was lowered to 18o C. Situation selection is a seldom studied emotion regulation strategy that entails choosing an upcoming emotional situation. Two mechanisms may drive its regulatory effect on emotional responses. One relates to the evaluation of the chosen option, people generally selecting the most positive. The other one implies that having the choice regarding the upcoming emotional situation is already regulatory, independently of what we choose. This research aimed at investigating this latter hypothesis. In a within-subject design, we compared emotional responses of 65 participants when they viewed negative and positive images they could select (use of Situation selection) vs. when they were imposed the exact same images (Situation selection not used). Results show that having the choice in negative contexts decreased negative experience, skin conductance, and respiration reactivity, while enhancing expressivity and cardiovascular reactivity. In positive contexts, choosing generally reinforced the image calming effect. Thus, contrary to other strategies that are efficient for negative but usually impair positive reactions (e.g., distraction), Situation selection may be used widely to reduce negative experience, while avoiding depletion of positive responses. This is particularly notable in emotion experience. Remarkably, these effects are not driven by the content of the situations, but by the act of choosing itself.
