Abstract

The effect of any management strategy on pest population levels must be researched and determinations need to be made as to how that strategy might work based on the control objectives. In certain areas of Europe, the objective is to contain or eradicate the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, population. In order to evaluate the impact of insecticide seed coatings and/or planting-time applications of insecticides as WCR population suppressors, plot trials and large field observations were carried out in Italy over a 5-year period. Larval, pupal and adult densities, along with root damage ratings, were estimated at different locations. Data from these studies revealed that the number of WCR adults emerging from untreated plots did not differ from the number of beetles emerging from those treated with insecticides, whether as seed coating or in-furrow applications. Both seed insecticide coatings (imidacloprid, fipronil, thiamethoxam, tefluthrin) and soil insecticides applied in-furrow (chlorpyrifos, diazinon, tefluthrin) did not reduce the number of beetles emerging from monoculture fields, either in plot trials or large field observations. Observations in the USA had previously shown that soil insecticides applied at planting time partially protected basal roots from economic damage, but did not reduce corn rootworm populations. Similarly, in Europe, it has been demonstrated that not only the application of soil insecticides at planting time but also insecticide seed coatings have no role in the containment and/or eradication of WCR. Although insecticide seed coatings and soil insecticides applied in-furrow may provide protection against economic damage to roots, these management strategies do not have an impact on WCR populations and therefore are useless in WCR containment and eradication programmes.

3. AdoPt Project - Adoptive families’ strengths, difficulties and service needs: A Portuguese follow-up study

Abstract

Introduction:Together with many positive experiences, adoption brings stress and difficulties. In Portugal, about 1/15 preadoption placements is disrupted. In Europe, 1 in 25 adoptions fail. International data show that around 1/4 adoptions undergo major difficulties that threaten stability/permanence. Portuguese research on these matters is currently very limited. Aims: The goal of this poster is to present a recently funded project (AdoPt) aiming at identifying risk/protective factors of postadoption instability/permanence in variables related to adoptees, adopters, parent-child relationships, formal and informal sources of support, and developing, val- idating and sustaining an online survey system to monitor postadoption pathways and needs. Method:Using a cross-sequential design, 3 cohorts of 90 children each, adopted in 2013, 2016 and 2019, will be followed for 3 years with data collection times 12 months apart. Each cohort will include children adopted at ages 0-2, 3-5 and 6-10, ensuring a final age-span of adoptees between 2 and 20 years. Data will be collected online, using adopters and professionals as informants. At the end, data from a representative sub-sample of 90 families will be collected at in-home visits to cross-validate online data (adoptees will also participate). A user-friendly on- line monitoring and follow-up system will be set up. Families will be provided with feedback and educational resources. Annual sessions with adoption professionals will provide the opportunity to share ongoing findings and design new services. Abstract

Background: Critically ill patients frequently encounter disruptions in their circadian rhythms in the intensive care unit (ICU) environment. New lighting systems have been developed to enhance daytime light levels and to promote circadian alignment., Objectives: To investigate the impact of implementing an innovative lighting technology that mimics natural light and reproduce the colour of the sky., Design: Prospective, observational, non-randomized comparative trial. ICU patients were exposed to either a cutting-edge lighting system based on new technology (intervention group) or a conventional lighting system using fluorescent bulbs (control group)., Setting: An Italian intensive care unit with ten beds and five windowless rooms, thereby denying access to natural light. Three rooms had new lighting technology., Main Outcome Measures: The two groups were compared to assess the prevalence or absence of delirium and the need for sedatives during ICU stay. The secondary aim was to assess the presence of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder in patients at 3, 6, and 12 months after ICU discharge., Results: 86 patients were included: 52 (60 %) in the intervention group and 34 (40 %) in the control group. Seventy-nine patients (82 %) were alive at ICU discharge. Fourteen patients (16 %) developed delirium (intervention group: n = 8 [15 %] vs. control group: n = 6 [18 %] in the control group, (P=0.781). The use of sedative drugs and neuromuscular blocking agents was similar in both the groups. No differences in the incidence of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorders were observed among patients who underwent follow-up visits., Conclusions: Compared to traditional fluorescent tube lighting, the innovative lighting system did not provide any significant benefit in reducing the frequency of delirium or the necessity for sedative medications., Implications for Clinical Practice: A single intervention, the use of lights that mimic sunny light and the sky, did not result in a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of delirium.
