Fall N fertilizers are applied to turfgrass at predetermined rates instead of being based on plant‐N status. Normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) and the sufficiency index (SI) concept are used to assess plant‐N status in some agronomic crops but has not been evaluated for turfgrass. This study was conducted across 3 yr in Connecticut to determine fall and spring NDVI SI values in a mixed species, cool‐season lawn. Field experiments were set out with varying fall N rates with NDVI measured weekly in October and November, and in late April. Quadratic and Linear‐Response and Plateau (LRP) models were significant (P <.0001) for all fall and spring SI values in response to fall N rates. Fall SI was maximized between 140 and 155 kg N ha−1 for the quadratic model and plateaued between 79 and 102 kg N ha−1 for the LRP model. Spring SI was maximized at 189 and plateaued at ≥116 kg N ha−1 for quadratic and LRP models, respectively. In relation to commonly recommended fall N rates of 24.5, 49, and 98 kg N ha−1, the models suggest that no supplemental N is needed when SI is ≥92, ≥95, and ≥99% of the N‐rich reference in the fall, respectively. Late April SI >89% of spring N‐rich reference would indicate that excess fertilizer was applied the previous fall at rates >49 kg N h−1. The NDVI SI can provide site‐specific fall N fertilization guidance of cool‐season turfgrass lawns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this thesis, three separate studies including `Bio-Fertilizer Experiment-1', 'Bio-Fertilizer Experiment-2' and 'Damping-off Disease Trial' were conducted. Damping-off Disease Trial and Bio-Fertilizer Experiment-1 were carried out at Uludag University in 2008 and 2009 while location A of the Bio-Fertilizer Experiment-2 was set up at the University of Connecticut (USA) in 2010 and the same experiment was repeated in location B at Uludag University in 2011 and 2012. In both Bio-fertilizer trials, different strains of bacteria were used in addition to nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizers, and their effect on turfgrass color, development, quality, clipping yield as well as the number of bacteria in the soil and uptake of nutrients were determined. In disease trial, perennial ryegrass was treated with chemical fungicides, biological fungicides, plant activator and extract. The efficacy of the treatments in managing the damping-off disease in turfgrasses was investigated and their effects on the turf growth and performance were determined. The results of the trials can be summarized in general as follows; the bio-fertilizers, plant activator and extract were not found to be as effective as nitrogen fertilizers. Phosphorous fertilizers such as bio-fertilizers did not show the desired effect on the growth and turf quality. There was no significant difference between perennial ryegrass and tall fescue in terms of the turf performance although tall fescue gave higher clipping yields. Based on our results, we recommend monthly applications of 5,0-7,5 kg nitrogen per decare to achieve desirable turfgrass growth, yield, quality and turf performance depending on many factors such as plant species, soil structure, climate and growing conditions. In addition, it was difficult to control and predict the possibility of damping-off disease epidemics, Chemical and biological fungicides, which were applied for control of damping-off disease, prevented turfgrass from infection at only low levels and hence, could not achieve effective disease control. We conclude that tested fungicides may provide, inconsistent results in managing this disease. 205

The current study addresses the effects of topdressing composted chicken manure on established turf and comparing the composted chicken manure to a chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Turf color, quality and clipping yields were correlated with N sources and application timing. Monthly fertilization resulted in a more uniform color and turf quality and less clipping yields than did comparable amounts of all N sources applied each as a single application in spring and spring and fall (S + F). The monthly and/or S + F topdressing of chicken manure composts increased the color and quality ratings of the turf mixture during the growing season but did not greatly affect the clipping production.

The objectives of the present study were to determine the effects of the rate and timing of the application of sun-dried wastewater sludge from a food processing company's wastewater system on turfgrass growth and quality. The results were compared with those obtained with ammonium nitrate, and changes in the concentration of heavy metals and the presence of fecal coliform in turf soils after sun-dried wastewater sludge application were determined. The rate and the timing of sun-dried wastewater sludge and ammonium nitrate applications affected the turf color, quality, and clipping yield. Monthly fertilization resulted in a more uniform color and turf quality than infrequent spring and fall fertilization. Compared with the background values of base soils, heavy metals did not accumulate in sun-dried wastewater sludge-amended soils over the test period. Fecal coliform was not detected in sludge-amended soil samples, indicating that bacteria regrowth did not occur during the study period.
