We report an extensive high-field study of atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$, a material realization of quantum sawtooth chains with weak interchain couplings, in continuous and pulsed magnetic fields up to 58 T. In particular, we have mapped the entropy landscape for fields as high as 35 T and have identified a field-induced quantum critical point at 21.9(1) T for $\mathbf{H} \parallel c$ axis. The quantum critical point separates field regions with and without magnetic order, evidenced by our thermodynamic study and $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, but lies far below full saturation of the magnetization. Corroborated by numerical results using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we find this behavior associated with a decoupling of the sawtooth chain into two magnetic subsystems consisting of a spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (backbone of the sawtooth chain) in the presence of an exchange field produced by the remaining field-polarized spins.

We present a detailed study of the electronic and magnetic ground state properties of Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si using a combination of macroscopic and microscopic experimental techniques. From these experiments we quantitatively characterize the metal-insulator transition and magnetic/non-magnetic quantum phase transition occurring at low doping levels in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si. From our study, we find a surprising closeness of the critical composition of the metal-insulator transition at $x_{\mathrm{MIT}} = 0.014$ and the quantum phase transition at $x_{\mathrm{LRO}} \sim 0.024-0.031$. It suggests that these effects are cooperative and depend on each other.

Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

We report a study of the spin dynamics of the frustrated ferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ chain compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, in applied magnetic fields up to field polarization. By means of an extreme-environment inelastic neutron scattering experiment, we have measured the low-energy spin excitations of linarite in fields up to 8.8 T for $\mathbf{H} \parallel b$ axis. We have recorded the spin excitation spectra along $h$, $k$ and $l$ for the field-induced magnetic phases IV, V and the field polarized state close to saturation. By employing first-principles calculations, we estimate the leading magnetic exchanges out of the $bc$ plane and model the dispersion relations using linear spin-wave theory. In this way, we find evidence for a (very weak) residual magnetic exchange coupling out of the $bc$ plane. Together with the previously established dominant intrachain couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and the interchain coupling $J_3$, we derive an effective set of exchange couplings for a microscopic description of linarite. Further, we find that the peculiar character of phase V manifests itself in the measured spin dynamics.

We present a detailed study of the magnetic properties of weakly ferromagnetic/quantum critical Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$ using muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR). By means of an angular dependent study of the muon spin rotation signal in applied magnetic fields on a single crystal in the paramagnetic state we establish the muon stopping site in the crystallographic lattice of NbFe$_2$. With this knowledge we develop models to describe the muon spin rotation and relaxation signals in the weakly ferromagnetic, spin density wave and quantum critical phases of Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$ and fit the corresponding experimental data. In particular, we quantify the $\mu$SR response for quantum critical behavior in Nb$_{1.0117}$Fe$_{1.9883}$ and extract the influence of residual weak structural disorder. From our analysis, Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$ emerges to be uniquely suited to study quantum criticality close to weak itinerant ferromagnetic order.

We present an extensive powder and single-crystal neutron scattering investigation of the crystallographic structure and magnetic order of the frustrated metallic $f$-electron magnet UNi$_4$B. We carry out a full refinement of the crystallographic structure and conclude that the low-temperature lattice symmetry is orthorhombic (space group Pmm2; cell parameters: $a = 6.963(4)~\r{A}$ , $b = 14.793(9)~\r{A}$ , $c = 17.126(8)~\r{A}$). We determine the magnetically ordered structure, concluding that below $T_\mathrm{N} = 19.5~\mathrm{K}$ the material undergoes a transition into a partially ordered antiferromagnetic state. The magnetic structure is consistent with the existence of toroidal order in this material. We further test the proposal of a second magnetic transition occurring at $330~\mathrm{mK}$, concluding that the thermodynamic anomalies observed at these temperatures do not reflect modifications of the magnetic structure. Our study provides a consistent picture of the interrelationship of structural and magnetic properties in the frustrated magnet UNi$_4$B previously unresolved., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. B

We present a detailed study of the magnetic and electronic properties of U$_2$Rh$_3$Si$_5$, a material that has been demonstrated to exhibit a first order antiferromagnetic phase transition. From a high magnetic field study, together with extensive experiments in moderate fields, we establish the magnetic phase diagrams for all crystallographic directions. The possibility of an electronic phase in a narrow interval above the N\'eel temperature as a precursor of a magnetic phase is discussed., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. B

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the mineral atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$. Density functional theory yields a Hamiltonian describing anisotropic sawtooth chains with weak 3D connections. Experimentally, we fully characterize the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Magnetic order shows a complex evolution with the magnetic field, while, starting at 31.5 T, we observe a plateau-like magnetization at about $M_{\rm sat}/2$. Based on complementary theoretical approaches, we show that the latter is unrelated to the known magnetization plateau of a sawtooth chain. Instead, we provide evidence that the magnetization process in atacamite is a field-driven canting of a 3D network of weakly coupled sawtooth chains that form giant moments.

We report on a detailed neutron diffraction and $^1$H-NMR study on the frustrated spin-1/2 chain material linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, where competing ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions lead to frustration. From the magnetic Bragg peak intensity studied down to 60 mK, the magnetic moment per Cu atom is obtained within the whole magnetic phase diagram for $H \parallel b$ axis. Further, we establish the detailed configurations of the shift of the SDW propagation vector in phase V with field and temperature. Finally, combining our neutron diffraction results with those from a low-temperature/high-field NMR study we find an even more complex phase diagram close to the quasi-saturation field suggesting that bound two-magnon excitations are the lowest energy excitations close to and in the quasi-saturation regime. Qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, we relate such behavior to $XYZ$ exchange anisotropy and contributions from the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction to affect the magnetic properties of linarite.

We present a comparative study of the (magneto)transport properties, including Hall effect, of bulk, thin film and nanostructured MnSi. In order to set our results in relation to published data we extensively characterize our materials, this way establishing a comparatively good sample quality. Our analysis reveals that in particular for thin film and nanostructured material, there are extrinsic and intrinsic contributions to the electronic transport properties, which by modeling the data we separate out. Finally, we discuss our Hall effect data of nanostructured MnSi under consideration of the extrinsic contributions and with respect to the question of the detection of a topological Hall effect in a skyrmionic phase.

Here we present inelastic neutron scattering measurements from the frustrated, quantum spin-1/2 chain material linarite, PbCuSO_4(OH)_2. Time of flight data, taken at 0.5K and zero applied magnetic field reveals low-energy dispersive spin wave excitations below 1.5meV both parallel and perpendicular to the Cu-chain direction. From this we confirm that the interchain couplings within linarite are around 10% of the nearest neighbour intrachain interactions. We analyse the data within both linear spin-wave theory and density matrix renormalisation group theories and establish the main magnetic exchange interactions and the simplest realistic Hamiltonian for this material.

We have measured Hall effect, magnetotransport and magnetostriction on the field induced phases of single crystalline UPt$_2$Si$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 60\,T at temperatures down to 50\,mK. For the magnetic field applied along the $c$ axis we observe strong changes in the Hall effect at the phase boundaries. From a comparison to band structure calculations utilizing the concept of a dual nature of the uranium 5$f$ electrons, we find evidence for field induced topological changes of the Fermi surface due to at least one Lifshitz transition. Furthermore, we find a unique history dependence of the magnetotransport and magnetostriction data, indicating that the Lifshitz type transition is of a discontinuous nature, as predicted for interacting electron systems.

Recent studies have dealt with the electronic and magnetic ground state properties of the tetraboride material MnB$_4$. So far, however, the ground state properties could not be established unambiguously. Therefore, here we present an experimental study on single-crystalline MnB$_4$ by means of resistivity and magnetization measurements. For this, we have developed a sample holder that allows four-point ac resistivity measurements on these very small ($\sim$\,100\,$\mu$m) samples. With our data we establish that the electronic ground state of MnB$_4$ is intrinsically that of a pseudo-gap system, in agreement with recent band structure calculations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the material does neither show magnetic order nor a behavior arising from the vicinity to a magnetically ordered state, this way disproving previous claims.

Low-temperature neutron diffraction and NMR studies of field-induced phases in linarite are presented for magnetic fields $H \parallel b$ axis. A two-step spin-flop transition is observed as well as a transition transforming a helical magnetic ground state into an unusual magnetic phase with sine-wave modulated moments $\parallel H$. An effective $\tilde{J}_1$-$\tilde{J}_2$ single-chain model with a magnetization-dependent frustration ratio $\alpha_{\rm eff} = -\tilde{J}_2/\tilde{J}_1$ is proposed. The latter is governed by skew interchain couplings and shifted to the vicinity of the ferromagnetic critical point. It explains qualitatively the observation of a rich variety of exotic (for strongly correlated cuprate spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems) longitudinal collinear spin-density wave SDW$_p$ states ($9 \geq p \geq 2$).

We present a study of the alloying series of the non-centrosymmetric $f$-electron intermetallic CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. In addition, we include a high pressure magnetization investigation of the stoichiometric parent compound CePt$_3$B. From our data we establish the nature of the magnetic ground state properties of the series, derive the ordered magnetic moment as function of stoichiometry and gain insight into the evolution of the symmetry of the ordered magnetic state with $x$. We thus can verify the notion that the behavior of the sample series can essentially be understood within the framework of the Doniach phase diagram. Further, our findings raise the issue of the role the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnetic interaction plays in correlated electron materials, and its effect on magnetic fluctuations in such materials., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully establish the phase diagram and to discuss it in the context of dimerized spin systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

We present a detailed study in the paramagnetic regime of the frustrated $s$ = 1/2 spin-compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Our data reveal highly anisotropic values for the saturation field along the crystallographic main directions, with $\sim$ 7.6, $\sim$ 10.5 and $\sim$ 8.5\,T for the $a$, $b$, and $c$ axes, respectively. In the paramagnetic regime, this behavior is explained mainly by the anisotropy of the \textit{g}-factor but leaving room for an easy-axis exchange anisotropy. Within the isotropic $J_1$-$J_2$ spin model our experimental data are described by various theoretical approaches yielding values for the exchange interactions $J_1$ $\sim$ -100\,K and $J_2$ $\sim$ 36\,K. These main intrachain exchange integrals are significantly larger as compared to the values derived in two previous studies in the literature and shift the frustration ratio $\alpha = J_2/|J_1|$ $\approx$ 0.36 of linarite closer to the 1D critical point at 0.25. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements further prove that the static susceptibility is dominated by the intrinsic spin susceptibility. The Knight shift as well as the broadening of the linewidth in ESR and NMR at elevated temperatures indicate a highly frustrated system with the onset of magnetic correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 2.75(5)\,K, in agreement with the calculated exchange constants., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

Azurite, a natural mineral made up of CuO chains, is also an intriguing spin-1/2 quantum magnet. There has been much debate as to the 1-dimensional (1D) nature of this material by theorists and experimentalists alike. The focus of this debate lies in the interactions between Cu-ions within the antiferromagnetically ordered state below 1.9 K. We present high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering data which highlight the complexity of the magnetic ground state of azurite. The application of magnetic fields and temperatures were used to probe the excitations revealing important information about the dynamics in this system. From this we are able to conclude that the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain model is not sufficient to describe the dynamics in azurite. Instead additional coupling including interchain interactions and an anisotropic staggered field are necessary to fully model the observed excitations., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

Here we present neutron diffraction results on the mineral azurite. We have found that the crystal structure of azurite can be described in the space group $P2_1$ which is the next lower symmetric group of $P2_1/c$ as found in earlier work. This small change in symmetry does not greatly influence the lattice parameters or atomic fractional coordinates which are presented here for single crystal diffraction refinements. The ordered magnetic moment structure of this material has been determined and is comprised of two inequivalent magnetic moments on copper sites of magnitude 0.68(1) and 0.25(1) $\mu_{B}$. This result is discussed in terms of the anisotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. It is found that the system is likely governed by one-dimensional behaviour despite the long-range ordered ground state. Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, has been considered an ideal example of a one-dimensional (1D) diamond chain antiferromagnet. Early studies of this material imply the presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N \sim 1.9$ K while magnetization measurements have revealed a 1/3 magnetization plateau. Until now, no corroborating neutron scattering results have been published to confirm the ordered magnetic moment structure. We present recent neutron diffraction results which reveal the presence of commensurate magnetic order in azurite which coexists with significant magnetoelastic strain. The latter of these effects may indicate the presence of spin frustration in zero applied magnetic field. Motivated by the observation of a giant Nernst effect in URu_2Si_2, the thermoelectric response of the related system UPt_2Si_2 was investigated using thermal and electric transport properties such as the Nernst and Seebeck effects, thermal conductivity, Hall effect and electrical resitivity. Unlike URu_2Si_2, UPt_2Si_2 is neither superconducting nor exhibits a ``hidden-order'' state. Nevertheless a pronounced Nernst effect anomaly is found to coincide with the onset of the antiferromagnetic order in UPt_2Si_2. Although the absolute values are substantially lower, its appearance and characteristics can favorably be compared to the giant Nernst effect in URu_2Si_2 indicating the common feature of a partial Fermi surface gap., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present a specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering study in magnetic fields up into the 1/3 magnetization plateau phase of the diamond chain compound azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$. We establish that the magnetization plateau is a dimer-monomer state, {\it i.e.}, consisting of a chain of $S = 1/2$ monomers, which are separated by $S = 0$ dimers on the diamond chain backbone. The effective spin couplings $J_{mono}/k_B = 10.1(2)$ K and $J_{dimer}/k_B = 1.8(1)$ K are derived from the monomer and dimer dispersions. They are associated to microscopic couplings $J_1/k_B = 1(2)$ K, $J_2/k_B = 55(5)$ K and a ferromagnetic $J_3/k_B = -20(5)$ K, possibly as result of $d_{z^2}$ orbitals in the Cu-O bonds providing the superexchange pathways., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we demonstrate the application of high magnetic fields to study the magnetic properties of low dimensional spin systems. We present a case study on the series of 2-leg spin-ladder compounds Na$_2$T$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$(H$_2$O)$_2$ with T = Ni, Co, Fe and Mn. In all compounds the transition metal is in the $T^{2+}$ high spin configuation. The localized spin varies from S=1 to 3/2, 2 and 5/2 within this series. The magnetic properties were examined experimentally by magnetic susceptibility, pulsed high field magnetization and specific heat measurements. The data are analysed using a spin hamiltonian description. Although the transition metal ions form structurally a 2-leg ladder, an isolated dimer model consistently describes the observations very well. This behaviour can be understood in terms of the different coordination and superexchange angles of the oxalate ligands along the rungs and legs of the 2-leg spin ladder. All compounds exhibit magnetic field driven ground state changes which at very low temperatures lead to a multistep behaviour in the magnetization curves. In the Co and Fe compounds a strong axial anisotropy induced by the orbital magnetism leads to a nearly degenerate ground state and a strongly reduced critical field. We find a monotonous decrease of the intradimer magnetic exchange if the spin quantum number is increased.

We present a detailed structural investigation of the organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br at temperatures $T$ from 9 to 300 K. Anomalies in the $T$ dependence of the lattice parameters are associated with a glass-like transition previously reported at $T_g$ = 77 K. From structure refinements at 9, 100 and 300 K, the orthorhombic crystalline symmetry, space group {\it Pnma}, is established at all temperatures. Further, we extract the $T$ dependence of the occupation factor of the eclipsed conformation of the terminal ethylene groups of the BEDT-TTF molecule. At 300 K, we find 67(2) %, with an increase to 97(3) % at 9 K. We conclude that the glass-like transition is not primarily caused by configurational freezing-out of the ethylene groups.

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in a staggered magnetic field describing materials such as copper benzoate and copper pyrimidine dinitrate. Using the density-matrix renormalization group for transfer matrices (TMRG) we calculate the magnetization of these materials at finite temperature and arbitrary magnetic field. These results are in excellent agreement with experimental data, allowing for a determination of the inhomogeneity parameter c of copper benzoate (c = 0.043) and copper pyrimidine dinitrate (c= 0.11). The TMRG approach can be applied to rather low temperatures yielding singular field and temperature dependences of susceptibilities., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We present a detailed study on the (magneto)transport properties of as-cast and heat treated material UCu$_4$Pd. We find a pronounced sample dependence of the resistivity $\rho$ of as-cast samples, and reproduce the annealing dependence of $\rho$. In our study of the Hall effect we determine a metallic carrier density for all samples, and a temperature dependence of the Hall constant which is inconsistent with the Skew scattering prediction. The magnetoresistive response is very small and characteristic for spin disorder scattering, suggesting that overall the resistivity is controlled mostly by nonmagnetic scattering processes. We discuss possible sources for the temperature and field dependence of the transport properties, in particular with respect to quantum criticality and electronic localization effects., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted PRB

We present measurements of the magnetic susceptibility chi(T) on Cu2Te2O5Br2 under externally applied pressure. From our data we extract the pressure response of the antiferromagnetic phase transition at T0 = 11.6 K and of the overall magnetic coupling strength. Our experiments indicate that with pressure the overall magnetic coupling strength increases by about 25% with applied pressure of only 8 kbar. In contrast, the phase transition temperature T0 is significantly suppressed and not observable anymore at a pressure of already 8.2 kbar.

We present a detailed study of the electronic transport properties on a single crystalline specimen of the moderately disordered heavy fermion system URh$_2$Ge$_2$. For this material, we find glassy electronic transport in a single crystalline compound. We derive the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and establish metallicity by means of optical conductivity and Hall effect measurements. The overall behavior of the electronic transport properties closely resembles that of metallic glasses, with at low temperatures an additional minor spin disorder contribution. We argue that this glassy electronic behavior in a crystalline compound reflects the enhancement of disorder effects as consequence of strong electronic correlations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on copper pyrimidine dinitrate [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n, a one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet with alternating local symmetry. From the local susceptibility measured by NMR at the three inequivalent carbon sites in the pyrimidine molecule we deduce a giant spin canting, i.e., an additional staggered magnetization perpendicular to the applied external field at low temperatures. The magnitude of the transverse magnetization, the spin canting of 52 degrees at 10 K and 9.3 T and its temperature dependence are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 6 Postscript figures

We present a high-field magnetization study of the $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$]$_n$. For this material, as result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a staggered $g$ tensor, the ground state is characterized by an anisotropic field-induced spin excitation gap and a staggered magnetization. Our data reveal the qualitatively different behavior in the directions of maximum and zero spin excitation gap. The data are analyzed via exact diagonalization of a linear spin chain with up to 20 sites and on basis of the Bethe ansatz equations, respectively. For both directions we find very good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations. We extract the magnetic coupling strength $J/k_B$ along the chain direction to 36.3(5) K and determine the field dependence of the staggered magnetization component $m_s$., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures (minor changes to manuscript and figures)

The transition metal coordination compound (pyrimidine)2FeCl2 crystallizes in a chiral lattice, space group I 4_1 2 2 (or I4_3 2 2). Combined magnetization, Mossbauer spectroscopy and powder neutron diffraction studies reveal that it is a canted antiferromagnet below T_N = 6.4 K with an unusually large canting of the magnetic moments of 14 deg. from their general antiferromagnetic alignment, one of the largest reported to date. This results in weak ferromagnetism with a ferromagnetic component of 1 mu_B. The large canting is due to the interplay between the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and the local single-ion anisotropy in the chiral lattice. The magnetically ordered structure of (pyrimidine)2FeCl2, however, is not chiral. We present a detailed structural investigation via neutron diffraction of differently heat treated samples Fe2VAl and Fe2+xV1-xAl. Moreover, the magnetic behaviour of these materials is studied by means of mSR and Mossbauer-experiments. Our structural investigation indicates that quenched Fe2VAl, exhibiting the previously reported "Kondo insulating like" behaviour, is off-stoichiometric (6%) in its Al content. Slowly cooled Fe2VAl is structurally better ordered and stoichiometric, and the microscopic magnetic probes establish long range ferromagnetic order below TC = 13K, consistent with results from bulk experiments. The magnetic state can be modelled as being generated by diluted magnetic ions in a non-magnetic matrix. Quantitatively, the required number of magnetic ions is too large as to be explained by a model of Fe/V site exchange. We present a study of annealing effects on the physical properties of tetragonal single--crystalline URh_2Ge_2. This system, which in as-grown form was recently established as the first metallic 3D random-bond heavy-fermion spin glass, is transformed by an annealing treatment into a long-range antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered heavy-fermion compound. The transport properties, which in the as-grown material were dominated by the structural disorder, exhibit in the annealed material signs of typical metallic behavior along the crystallographic a axis. From our study URh_2Ge_2 emerges as exemplary material highlighting the role and relevance of structural disorder for the properties of strongly correlated electron systems. We present a magnetotransport study of the low--carrier density ferromagnet EuB_6. This semimetallic compound, which undergoes two ferromagnetic transitions at T_l = 15.3 K and T_c = 12.5 K, exhibits close to T_l a colossal magnetoresistivity (CMR). We quantitatively compare our data to recent theoretical work, which however fails to explain our observations.
