1. Spatio-temporal neural distance fields for conditional generative modeling of the heart

Abstract

The rhythmic pumping motion of the heart stands as a cornerstone in life, as it circulates blood to the entire human body through a series of carefully timed contractions of the individual chambers. Changes in the size, shape and movement of the chambers can be important markers for cardiac disease and modeling this in relation to clinical demography or disease is therefore of interest. Existing methods for spatio-temporal modeling of the human heart require shape correspondence over time or suffer from large memory requirements, making it difficult to use for complex anatomies. We introduce a novel conditional generative model, where the shape and movement is modeled implicitly in the form of a spatio-temporal neural distance field and conditioned on clinical demography. The model is based on an auto-decoder architecture and aims to disentangle the individual variations from that related to the clinical demography. It is tested on the left atrium (including the left atrial appendage), where it outperforms current state-of-the-art methods for anatomical sequence completion and generates synthetic sequences that realistically mimics the shape and motion of the real left atrium. In practice, this means we can infer functional measurements from a static image, generate synthetic populations with specified demography or disease and investigate how non-imaging clinical data effect the shape and motion of cardiac anatomies., Comment: Accepted for MICCAI2024

20. Migrant Health Literacy in the European Union: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Objective: The European Union (EU) has experienced an increasing intake of migrants in recent years. As its population diversifies, new challenges present themselves for healthcare delivery due to communication, cultural differences and health literacy of migrants. In the light of this, this systematic literature review examines the state of the art of migrant health literacy research within the EU. Methods: Based on PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted in 2013, 2016 and 2018 using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, MEDLINE and PsychINFO. Results: A total of 21 articles were selected for inclusion. EU-related migrant health literacy research dated from 2009, but only a small number of the EU member states were represented. Eight general research themes were identifiable. Definitions of migrants varied, however, or could not be identified within a particular study, which may hamper the further dissemination of research, policy and capacity building. Conclusion: The review shows the evolution of migrant health literacy research in the EU. More research is needed however to support health system responses, to increase the health literacy of migrants and to improve the quality of healthcare in the EU.

Abstract

Health literacy entails the knowledge, motivation, and competencies to access, understand, appraise, and apply information to form judgement and make decisions concerning health care, disease prevention and health promotion in everyday life to maintain and promote quality of life during the life course, often with support of health providers. Amidst the pandemic, we needed to find new ways of keeping ourselves fit, changing the way we interacted with others in order not to get infected, keeping focus on hygiene and physical distances, following the new research that was shared about the virus and the disease, and yet, being aware of fake news and silo-thinking. At times, it has been tiresome and lonely to be part of the disruptive new ways of living; yet also a reminder about what really matters, namely the good life with work, family and friends. Even before the pandemic, there were threats to the good life. Abstract

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel virus in the coronavirus family, causing the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Biomedical vaccines are key but alongside biomedical vaccines, a social vaccine can be similarly useful to prevent infection from SARS-CoV-2, if applied as a health promotion strategy. In order to slow down and control the spread of SARS-CoV-2, applying the social vaccine concept should be considered in parallel. From a health promotion perspective, a social vaccine is a process of social and political mobilization driven by governmental and non-governmental organizations aiming at populations by applying interventions such as health communication, education and mass media campaigns as well as determinant-based programs to address environmental factors influencing personal behavior and community capacities to cope with and overcome the societal burdens of COVID-19. In this context, health literacy is significant, as seen in the role it plays in empowering citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic and enabling them to deal with health information considering COVID-19. As a public health strategy, health literacy as a social vaccine will enable individuals and communities to mitigate the spread of the virus by understanding and applying information as provided through governments and health authorities. The aim of this article is to explore health literacy as a promising social vaccine and opportunity to utilize social vaccination and thus be considered as a key public health approach—both bottom-up and top-down—to support the combat of COVID-19 and future states of emergency. Abstract

Despite notable scientific and medical advances, broader political, socioeconomic and behavioural factors continue to undercut the response to the COVID-19 pandemic . Here we convened, as part of this Delphi study, a diverse, multidisciplinary panel of 386 academic, health, non-governmental organization, government and other experts in COVID-19 response from 112 countries and territories to recommend specific actions to end this persistent global threat to public health. The panel developed a set of 41 consensus statements and 57 recommendations to governments, health systems, industry and other key stakeholders across six domains: communication; health systems; vaccination; prevention; treatment and care; and inequities. In the wake of nearly three years of fragmented global and national responses, it is instructive to note that three of the highest-ranked recommendations call for the adoption of whole-of-society and whole-of-government approaches , while maintaining proven prevention measures using a vaccines-plus approach that employs a range of public health and financial support measures to complement vaccination. Other recommendations with at least 99% combined agreement advise governments and other stakeholders to improve communication, rebuild public trust and engage communities in the management of pandemic responses. The findings of the study, which have been further endorsed by 184 organizations globally, include points of unanimous agreement, as well as six recommendations with >5% disagreement, that provide health and social policy actions to address inadequacies in the pandemic response and help to bring this public health threat to an end.
