Sulfuric acid is commonly used to electrochemically activate gold electrodes in a variety of electrochemical applications. This work provides the first evaluations of the electrochemical behaviors and a 3D image of an activated screen-printed gold electrode (SPGE, purchased commercially) through electrochemical and imaging analyses. The activated SPGE surface appears rougher than the unactivated SPGE surface when viewed through microtopography images using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nevertheless, the roughened microscopy structure does not exhibit any substantial changes in roughness factor for the activated SPGE, as indicated by capacitive current analyses. The significant improvement in electrochemical responsiveness of the activated SPGE is mainly attributed to the presence of surface pores created in the microscopic structure as a result of gold oxide layer formation. The presence of surface pores on the activated surface has significantly improved its conductivity by 10-fold. As a result, electron transfer kinetics and mass transports of the activated SPGE are greatly improved. The results presented in this work indicate that the surface of the activated SPGE greatly increased its intrinsic surface pores, and conductivity of the electrode surface and uncovered the electrocatalytic active sites. This significantly improves the activated SPGE's performance in electrochemical applications such as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). An activated SPGE considerably enhanced limiting current density as well as ∼172 mV versus Ag shifted onset potential to more positive potentials compared to unactivated SPGE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanism of O2 reduction at the spinels, Co3O4 and NiCo2O4, in KOH electrolyte is probed using voltammetry at rotating disc and rotating ring-disc electrodes by examination of the rotation rate dependent limiting currents. The analysis shows that the products and mechanisms at the two spinels are quite different. At the cobalt spinel, a substantial amount of the 2e- reduction product, H2O2, is formed while at NiCo2O4 the 4e- reduction strongly predominates. In terms of both the overpotential for reduction and its limiting current density, the mixed spinel is a substantially better electrocatalyst. It is proposed that the differences arise from an enhanced rate of O-O bond cleavage early in the reduction process at NiCo2O4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of low-cost electrode devices from conductive materials has recently attracted considerable attention as a sustainable means to replace the existing commercially available electrodes. In this study, two different electrode surfaces (surfaces 1 and 2, denoted as S1 and S2) were fabricated from chocolate wrapping aluminum foils. Energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to investigate the elemental composition and surface morphology of the prepared electrodes. Meanwhile, cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to assess the electrical conductivities and the electrochemical activities of the prepared electrodes. It was found that the fabricated electrode strips, particularly the S1 electrode, showed good electrochemical responses and conductivity properties in phosphate buffer (PB) solutions. Interestingly, both of the electrodes can respond to the ruthenium hexamine (Ruhex) redox species. The fundamental results presented from this study indicate that this electrode material can be an inexpensive alternative for the electrode substrate. Overall, our findings indicate that electrodes made from chocolate wrapping materials have promise as electrochemical sensors and can be utilized in various applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
