Abstract

Since several years we have successfully designed, built and tested at 77K several reluctance motors. YBCO bulk material has been incorporated into the rotor. Our latest results, based on the old design, will be published within the proceedings of the 8th VDI-Status-Seminar. The range of mechanical output power achieved is up to about 200 kW. All these motors have shown that a significant step in performance is obtained by using HTS bulk elements in the rotor, compared to the data of these test motors without superconductors. However, by now the motor parameters have been limited to certain values. In order to optimize this type of motor and to achieve increased output power and power density we have modified the design with several respects. This includes properties of the superconductor (critical current density raised by about 20%), the use of special soft magnetic material in the stator (increased saturation polarization), modified cut of the laminations (optimized for application at 77 K), and new geometry of the motor dimensions aimed at extremely high dynamics in order to adapt this motor to some special applications. With our present paper we present the results of this optimization which have brought the expected improvements and which are in excellent accordance with theory. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. Reluctance motors with bulk HTS material

Abstract

In recent years we have successfully designed, built and tested several reluctance motors with YBCO bulk material incorporated into the rotor, working at 77 K. Our last motor type SRE150 was tested up to 200 kW. The aim of our investigations is the construction of motors with extremely high power density and dynamics. In comparison to conventional motor types the advantage of HTS reluctance motors with respect to size and dynamics could be demonstrated. Some fields of possible future applications will be described. These motors show a significant improvement in performance using high quality HTS bulk elements in the rotor. Until now the motor parameters have been limited by the current density which could be obtained in the bulk material at 77 K and by the geometric dimensions of the segments available. Therefore we expect further improvements in the case of these materials. Since the total motor including stator and rotor is working at low temperature we have to optimize the windings and the magnetic circuit to these operation conditions. A new design of a 200 kW motor in order to achieve increased power density and the theoretical results of our calculations will be shown.

Abstract

The superconducting transition temperatureTc of a Nb3Sn diffusion wire has been studied as a function of low-temperature neutron irradiation (T=10 K).Tc is observed to be essentially constant until the fast neutron dose ft (for neutron energiesE>0.1 MeV) exceeds a value of 1018 n/cm2; after this valueTc decreases linearly with ft up to the maximum applied dose of 1.05×1019 n/cm2. Comparison with theory and other experimental data indicates that radiation-induced disorder is the primary mechanism for the observedTc changes.

Abstract

The paper summarizes the experiments performed with ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) on ASDEX, from November 1984 until March 1986; the most interesting results are reported and discussed in detail. Heating and confinement studies using the hydrogen second harmonic scheme and the hydrogen minority scheme (PIC< 2.6 MW, tIC< 1.5 s) show a typical L-mode behaviour, i.e. a power dependent confinement degradation, which is rather similar to that found with neutral beam injection (NBI) heating. ICRH is accompanied by a slightly improved particle and energy confinement compared with that of NBI; this is also true for a combined ICRH + NBI scheme, up to Ptot? 4.5 MW, absorbed in the plasma. Particular efforts have been devoted to investigations of the second harmonic regime in H/D plasmas with nH/ne? 0.1 - 1, with a view to heating mixtures in reactor relevant plasmas. The achievement of H-mode transitions with ICRH alone in the hydrogen minority scheme at an absorbed RF power of about 1.1 MW supports the assumption of common confinement properties in auxiliary heated tokamaks, since they appear to be widely independent of the additional heating method. ICRH specific impurity problems, such as the strong release of iron from the vessel walls, have been overcome by applying extensive in situ wall carbonization. The mechanisms responsible for impurity generation have partly been identified and analysed; however, the problem still remains to be solved. Impurities preferentially released from the ICRH antenna do not pose problems.
