A eletrificação da frota de veículos apresenta-se como uma alternativa com grande potencialidade de redução de emissões de Gases do Efeito Estufa (GEE) no setor de transporte. Atualmente, o sistema mais utilizado, cujo fornecimento da propulsão ao veículo ocorre através da eletricidade, envolve o uso de baterias íon-lítio com recarga plug-in. Outra possibilidade que se investiga é a utilização de veículos equipados com célula a combustível (CaC), um reator eletroquímico capaz de converter hidrogênio (H2) e o oxigênio do ar em eletricidade. No Brasil, a utilização de etanol como insumo na produção de H2 para abastecimento de veículos a CaC apresenta-se como uma possibilidade expressiva, dada a magnitude da infraestrutura de produção e distribuição de etanol já previamente instaladas no país. Este artigo apresenta um estudo de Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida que compara o desempenho ambiental destes dois sistemas – i) Veículo Elétrico convencional, com baterias íon-lítio e recarga plug-in (VE-Li), e ii) Veículo Elétrico movido a CaC (VE-CaC) utilizando H2 obtido da reforma-vapor do etanol – realizada no posto de combustível (sistema off-board descentralizado). O sistema VE-Li apresentou melhor desempenho em cinco categorias de impacto ambiental; o sistema VE-CaC performou melhor em seis. Quanto à categoria Aquecimento Global (GWP100a), o sistema VE-CaC apresentou um impacto 12% menor que o sistema VE-Li, mostrando potencial expressivo para redução de emissões de GEE. Os resultados do sistema VE-Li reforçaram a necessidade de se manter a matriz elétrica com baixa participação de combustíveis fósseis para que, em um eventual cenário de ampliação da demanda por eletricidade alavancada pela eletrificação da frota, este sistema possa representar efetivamente uma alternativa de baixa emissão.

This chapter shows that the idea of a common future is highlighted through awareness that a global collapse may impact the entire planet. Living with a pandemic like Covid-19, since March 2020, has shown that this is a concrete fact and what it means for the planet. For this reason, the choice and recognition of the Global Agendas, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Available: un-org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights, 1948), and Agenda 2030 (UN, Transforming our World: The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Available: un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/RES/70/1&Lang=E, 2015) are concrete options that lead us to recognize that we do have a Common Future. Our predatory way of acting, and the absence of criticism of this model of development, need to be rethought whether through a radical critique of this model or by building new values and ways of living, or the good life.

The central objective of this chapter is to analyse the role and importance of the concept of subjectivity and its close relationship to environmental and climate change. From the identification of a gap present in the literature, we seek from an interdisciplinary approach to bring a new perspective of analysis and also a contribution to the theme. The principals aspects in this chapter are: Approaches, Disciplinary dimensions: expanding views and concepts, Climate change and subjectivity, The construction of climate change narratives: ‘nightmare’ or ‘false comfort’, Climate change and psychoanalysis, The cultural narrative about climate change and subjectivity: Important Findings in Convergent Approaches, and Some important considerations about objective advances in the relationship of subjectivity, psychoanalysis, and climate change: and the construction of networks.

Aims: This paper aims to analyse the evolution of the fleet of vehicles on the D. Pedro I Export Corridor Axis, in the period 1998-2016 and its potential relationship with vehicle accident mortality rates with two municipalities cut by this route - Atibaia and Caraguatatuba. Study Design: The focus was to investigate to what extent the intensification of the current fleet can be related as a factor directly responsible for the increase of the occurrence of accidents, using as an indicator for this measurement the mortality rate due to accidents of Traffic. Place and Duration of Study: Study realized in São Paulo State, Brazil, for 36 months, from July 2015 to July 2018. The data used and analysed to diverse indicators were from 1998 to 2016. Methodology: The methodology for the analysis of the intensification of the current fleet in the studied region was based on the comparison between the evolution figures of the fleets and the mortality rates due to transport accidents. In this way, all values were arranged on an identical horizontal axis (referring to the years), to show possible correlations. Results: The relationship between the circulation fleet increase and the increase of accidents represents the negative impact of the processes of social and environmental changes that are occurring in the region. These processes link urbanisation, risks and vulnerability due to the lack of adequate urban planning and road safety infrastructure that exposes the population of these municipalities to a higher risk of accidents. Conclusion: The data on the evolution of vehicle fleet in the exporting Corridor unequivocally evidences an accelerated urbanisation process, while mortality rates indicate the absence or inefficiency of public sector-oriented police and the health of the population, which hinder this process and may indicate negative impacts on society as a whole.

Aims: Megaprojects development has generated changes in the socioeconomic and environmental structure of several regions. This paper aims to analyse socioenvironmental changes in 10 municipalities located along the D. Pedro I - Tamoios road axis, São Paulo state, Brazil, chosen for their regional relevance, and transformations caused by the roads duplication. Study Design: Analysis on how megaprojects influence the urban structure, the environment and different social groups, focusing in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), in different productive sectors (agricultural, services and industrial), in population growth and rural and urban scenarios. Place and Duration of Study: The study was realized in São Paulo State, Brazil, during 36 months, starting in July 2015 until July 2018, and the data used and analyzed to diverse indicators were from 1950 to 2014. Methodology: Sociodemographic data, the expansion of industry, services, tourism development and agricultural production of these municipalities were collected in government databases and through field surveys. They were analysed through integrated methodologies with qualitative and quantitative approaches, based on temporal variations for the studied municipalities and for the average of São Paulo State, Brazil, with focus on social and environmental changes that took place in this study area. Results: The results indicate that an intense process of industrialisation, tourism development, urban growth and population dynamics has accompanied the recent decade’s expansion of major roads in São Paulo State, Brazil, and that these processes contribute to changes that affect natural systems and may accelerate climate changes. Conclusion: It verified that this megaproject development had not considered the sustainability of regional natural resources, in a manner that promotes environmental and living quality to the population.

This paper reports on a research (FAPESP 2019/08044-3) on the importance of sustainability, through the 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) defined by Agenda 2030 with a particular emphasis to SDG 5 which deals with Gender Equity, and the importance of preventing and combating violence against women and girls. Since WHO’s declared the COVID 19 pandemic in March 2020, there has been a significant increase in domestic violence rates. Social isolation and hygiene practices are the most effective measures to prevent the spread and containment of the virus. Several feminist, national and international NGOs and societies have warned through their publications and social networks about these significant increases in this period. This chapter addresses this fact, through a systematic survey of these publications (e.g. UN Women, Patricia Galvao Institute) and papers published in some relevant Journals (e.g. The Lancet). This reflection aims not only to contribute to the ongoing research, but also to present strategies related to SDG 5, and to offer proposals and approaches to face the challenges related to Gender Equity.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar a importância dos conceitos de mudanças climáticas, sustentabilidade e direitos humanos, tendo como base as agendas internacionais e os impactos das mudanças climáticas, no recorte de gênero e raça. Diante da urgência da questão climática, faz-se necessário trazer reflexões sobre os impactos nos grupos vulneráveis às mudanças climáticas. O recorte feito nesta pesquisa bibliográfica foi para gênero e raça. Como conclusão, é evidente a necessidade de traçar um novo caminho para o planeta, onde mais da metade da população não seja deixada de fora das decisões e onde as fronteiras dos preconceitos (contra mulheres, as pessoas LGBTQI+ e negros) deem voz também à igualdade de gênero. E para isto, o ODS 5 precisa estar no centro das propostas quanto aos projetos de adaptação e mitigação às mudanças climáticas, assim como nas reflexões e trabalhos sobre sustentabilidade e direitos humanos.

South–South transnational advocacy networks (SSTANs) targeting emerging states, Southern companies, and their supporting institutions warrant nuanced distinctions from traditional transnational advocacy networks that are heavily reliant on Northern actors and targets, particularly in terms of the strategies and arguments they employ. This article analyzes the dynamics of SSTANs through the case of an environmental campaign against Brazilian hydropower projects proposed in the Peruvian Amazon. It demonstrates how Southern actors are mobilizing against new and emerging patterns of South–South cooperation, which, despite occurring on unfamiliar institutional terrain, reproduces familiar asymmetrical power relations and socioenvironmental burdens.

The main goal of this article is to reflect on the contribution of Daniel Hogan's pioneering work to the consolidation of the socio-environmental studies at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Due to his vast intellectual production, it would be impossible to fully address this topic in this space, thus, we chose to highlight a personal selection of printed works and projects considered seminal and representative for this approach. It is noteworthy that the task of making this choice was not easy due to the magnitude and scope of the work left by him, with his unique performance on various fronts and approaches to the socio-environmental theme in its different dimensions. However, our choice is centered on the constitution of the socio-environmental dimension from the Social Sciences, for which he has offered important theoretical contributions in recent decades, serving as the basis for numerous works, research projects, training of academics and the consolidation of a privileged space of action that remains until today as a reference of this tradition, which is the Center for Environmental Studies and Research – NEPAM – at UNICAMP, of which he was one of the founders and coordinator in the period from 1991 to 1997.

This paper contributes to the literature regarding gendered patterns of participation in conservation by examining participation in sea turtle conservation and community life in coastal Northeast Brazil. We used a mixed methods approach, comprised of questionnaires and focus groups, and our findings indicate that conservation participation can be partially explained by gendered characteristics related to issues of structural access, cultural attitudes and values, and agency. Results show greater gender differences in access and agency than attitudes toward sea turtle conservation, demonstrating how patterns of participation are influenced by close knit and gendered social networks that decrease an individual’s chance of being invited to participate. While gender issues are not universal, a framework examining issues of structure, culture, and agency allows differences related to age, class, race, etc. to be considered as well, presenting useful information in understanding the barriers and motivations involved in conservation participation.

O objetivo deste artigo é compreender as dinâmicas de conservação da biodiversidade do Brasil e de Moçambique. Especificamente pretende I) caracterizar as três áreas de conservação e a legislação inerente à conservação da biodiversidade em ambos os países; II) comparar os modelos de gestão das três áreas; III) identificar as diferenças e similaridades nessas áreas de conservação. Com uma abordagem qualitativa, a pesquisa baseou-se na revisão bibliográfica e documental e consubstanciada pelas técnicas de observação direta e diálogo, bem como o registo de imagens fotográficas. Os resultados mostraram a semelhança dos modelos de gestão nessas três áreas, e todas são habitadas, no seu interior e entorno, por população de diferentes classes sociais. Porém, há diferença de contextos em ambos os países. Enquanto a gestão das Unidades de Conservação brasileiras desafia o crescimento urbano, industrialização, privatização de terras, a gestão da Reserva Nacional do Niassa desafia as atividades de extrativismo ambiental (caça ilegal, queimadas descontroladas, mineração ilegal) para autossubsistência, com recurso a meios e técnicas tradicionais e perniciosas ao meio e à integridade dos recursos em conservação.

The fragmented and sectoral character of conservation as well as development policies has exacerbated the problems faced by small-scale fishers in developing countries. In Ilha Grande Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), traditional small-scale fishers (“Caicaras”) has struggled to respond to the contemporary challenges of overfishing and territory loss, which emerged, in part, as consequence of biodiversity conservation and development policies implemented over the last fifty years. In this paper, we aim to explore a sustainable territorial development approach to improve quality of life of fishing communities while conserving the land and seascape that they explore. We first look at the past phases of the development trajectory of Ilha Grande Bay in order to plan for the future. Data collection involved analysis of documentary sources, direct observation in decision-making arenas, and semi-structured interviews. We analyzed four periods from the development trajectory, focusing on small-scale fishing. Our findings show that the set of policies reviewed has strengthened the connections between biodiversity loss and poverty over the years. The viability of STD strategies depends on the recognition of the complexity of interactions among fisheries, environmental protection and tourism, and on the need to create a supply chain that adds value to fishery products which sustain livelihoods and has low environmental impact.

Based on studies carried out in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, it was observed that several municipalities have faced huge environmental changes that can be noticed in places where sustainability of natural resources was not prioritized. It was observed the prevalence of an economic development model supported by technological megaprojects in areas of environmental conservation, which also represent areas prone to social and technological risks. The municipality of Bom Jesus dos Perdoes, located in Sao Paulo State, showed very different average values for some social indicators in a set of municipalities of the region. The analysis of data on violence and crime, between 1996 and 2015, allows us to present a general local diagnosis that shows decreasing social security. Simultaneously, it allowed to identify how it is possible to reflect on social reality through two projects: (1) voluntary social work with children and adolescents at risk, through sports practices and (2) Integrated Management Office [Gabinete de Gestao Integrada]—GGI—a project created by the Brazilian Federal Government, of optional municipal adhesion, where it is proposed the integration of several local institutions aiming a joint management of public security. Both projects seek to improve social reality with sustainability and social responsibility of the population.

Among the challenges to sustainability, urban sprawl and an increasing demand for resources and energy can be mentioned. In the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, an intense process of industrialization and urbanization has accompanied the recent expansion of major highways. The study of these impacts is important from a sustainable perspective, as is analysis on how they may indicate socioenvironmental public policies and corporate actions. This study seeks to analyze sustainable corporate strategies to address environmental issues and managerial perceptions in industries located along the road axis Dom Pedro I (SP 65), in the Bragantina Region, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Methodological strategies involve analyses of industries’ data and interviews with personnel responsible for environmental departments. Data collected indicate a diversity of environmental management actions already adopted by many organizations and it became apparent that the main stimuli for their implementation are the necessity to reduce operational costs, consolidation of an environmentally responsible image and adequacy to the environmental legislation. Nevertheless, they still need to invest more substantially to implement modern sustainable strategies and updated socioenvironmental corporate policies for preservation of natural resources.

Conservation and management of water resources quality and quantity in a particular region are one of the great challenges to sustainability. Therefore, it is a very important element in the recognition of urban expansion processes and anthropic pressure on ecosystems associated with regional sustainable environmental planning. In the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, an intense process of industrialisation and urbanisation followed the recent expansion of its main east road system, which is located near headwaters and ecosystems of important rivers. In recent years, this area was also faced with an intense shortage of water resources due to a severe drought that the southeast area of Brazil faced, along with the lack of effective water resource management and the definition of economic development projects that take into account environmental preservation and regional sustainability. The main objectives of this study involve the recognition and study of such problems, the involvement of surrounding communities in collective actions that aim to recognize the regional socio-environmental history and to stimulate an awareness of the importance of regional rivers and their conservation and maintenance, aiming to secure for present and future generations the quality of water resources as a priority for the region’s sustainability.

This article reviews literature on the science and politics of deforestation in the Amazon from 1970 until today, focusing on their shifting meanings and the increasing relevance of climate change knowledge to their understanding and management. Since large-scale colonization of the region began in the 1970s, the debate on deforestation has been crucial in disputes involving science, development, and the environment. In the last decade, the issue of climate change has become more present in the science, politics, and policies related to deforestation in the Amazon. This debate has helped shift discussions on both the environmental and the development agenda for the region. Although there is a broad agreement that the Amazon is being increasingly integrated into global fluxes of knowledge, goods, and people, not all view this process under the same light. The review concludes that scientific views help condition the development of changing policy arrangements aimed at curbing deforestation, and the incorporation of climate change knowledge is an important aspect of the dynamics of environmental policies in the region. This article aspires to open a new line of conceptual analysis in the tourism development literature by exploring the relationships between resort development, violent crime and the drug economy. At the centre of our critical realist analysis is the relationship between tourism and transgression, a relationship that we argue deserves a more central place in researching tourism development. A case study of the north coast of Sao Paulo state is reported. Primary data from field observations and interviews are combined with the analysis of published data on crime and violence in the city and media reports of violence. We synthesise a range of academic literatures, published in both English and Portuguese, in the fields of criminology, real estate management, demography, health and tourism studies in order to make our arguments. Knowing the weather conditions in order to identify areas that are more likely to have extreme events and that can affect several socio economic and environmental areas has become a significant challenge. In Brazil, most extreme events are related to hydrologic phenomena. Unplanned urbanization, which leads to the environment degradation, has taken place quite quickly then society becomes more and more vulnerable to catastrophes related to the rain. Within such context, the objective of the following study was to use data mining techniques to analyze the frequency of precipitation extreme events from 1983 to 2012 in ten counties that are located along the D. Pedro I – Tamoios transport corridor. It was possible to identify, through the Data Mining tool, the years with most occurrence of extreme events within the period studied and compare them to the years with most municipal issues related to inundation, floods, and landslides. The results reinforce the technical mining data potentiality and suggest that the disasters are more related to bad urban planning with low environment preservation than to extreme pluvial events. RESUMO O conhecimento das condicoes climaticas, identificando regioes com maiores riscos de ocorrencias de eventos extremos, que possam impactar os diversos setores socioeconomicos e ambientais, tornou-se um grande desafio. No Brasil as maiores ocorrencias de eventos extremos estao relacionadas aos fenomenos hidrologicos. Diante da grande velocidade da urbanizacao sem planejamento e consequente degradacao do meio ambiente, as populacoes se tornam cada vez mais vulneraveis as catastrofes relacionadas as chuvas. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar tecnicas de mineracao de dados para analisar a frequencia das ocorrencias dos eventos extremos de precipitacao durante o periodo de 1983 a 2012 em dez municipios que se encontram ao longo do corredor rodoviario D. Pedro I – Tamoios. Por meio da ferramenta de Mineracao de Dados, foi possivel identificar os anos com mais ocorrencia de eventos extremos dentro do periodo estudado e coloca-los em contraposicao com os anos de registro de maiores problemas municipais relacionados com inundacoes, enchentes ou deslizamentos de terra. Os resultados reforcam a potencialidade da tecnica de mineracao de dados e sugerem ainda, que os desastres estao muito mais relacionados com o mau planejamento das cidades e com a pouca preservacao ambiental, do que com eventos pluviais extremos. This article analyses the presence of depression and antidepressant use diagnoses in the municipality of Nazare Paulista that belongs to the Cantareira System Environmental Protected Area, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected from the records that exist in the Adult Mental Health Area (n: 252) in the Municipality Health Center from 2003 to 2008. Among the users 65,5% are female, 40% are married, 42% have incomplete primary education and 35% live in rural districts. In relation to the diagnoses it was found 24% of depression, 20,2% of anxiety disorders and 24,9% of medications being antidepressants. It was verified that the diagnoses are above national and international standards. The questionings presented in this article are due to researches that have been carried out with the support of the Research Support Foundation of the State of Sao Paulo (Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo – FAPESP), concerning the environment, subjectivity and quality of life, through the analysis of the presence of depression in the contemporary context, and through the representations that health professionals have of this malady. That leads us to state that significant changes in mental health diagnosis have taken place. We introduced the subject and the main approaches to the subject, as well as the changes observed in the scientific production, especially in the fields of psychiatry and psychoanalysis, to evidence these transformations, focusing on the dissolution of the hysteria diagnosis and its preponderant replacement by the depression one. Finally, we attempted to specify the theoretical reference for this analysis and the final considerations.

While dealing with both interdisciplinarity and environment and society area as fields that harbor scientific contentions regarding ideas, practices, institutions and habitus (Bourdieu), this paper aims at providing an account of the multifaceted processes implied in the institutionalization of environmental concerns in Latin-American academia and research centers. The paper discusses the extent to which one can legitimately talk about "a Latin- American scientific specificity", supposedly resulting from peculiar theoretical approaches or even from particular socio-environmental features (such as widespread poverty and high rates of social inequality, along with unparalleled levels of biodiversity). Last but not least, the paper seeks to draw a sort of thematic map (via bibliographical review) as well as a consideration of the levels of scientific institutionalization of environmental issues in six different research centers located in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and Brazil. Ao tratar a interdisciplinaridade e a área de ambiente e sociedade enquanto campos que lidam com questões científicas relacionadas com idéias, práticas, instituições e habitus (Bourdieu), esse artigo pretende contribuir para a compreensão dos processos multifacetados implicados na institucionalização da questão ambiental na academia e centros de pesquisa latino-americanos. O texto discute em que medida pode-se legitimamente falar de uma "especificidade científica latino-americana", supostamente resultante de abordagens teóricas peculiares ou mesmo de situações sócio-ambientais particulares (como pobreza e altas taxas de desigualdade, junto a incomparáveis índices de biodiversidade). Por último, mas também importante, o texto pretende trazer um panorama temático (através da revisão bibliográfica) assim como apontar os níveis de institucionalização científica da área ambiental em seis centros de pesquisa localizados na Argentina, Chile, México, Uruguai e Brasil.

O presente artigo apresenta uma reflexão a partir de alguns dos resultados obtidos no projeto de pesquisa Qualidade de vida em sociedades complexas: a depressão entre trabalhadores da indústria petroquímica e pescadores artesanais. Vale ressaltar que a pesquisa é parte considerável de um caminho mais longo desenvolvido desde os anos 90. Através de intensa pesquisa de campo, analisou-se a qualidade de vida, através da observação dos estados depressivos presentes nos trabalhadores da indústria petroquímica (REPLAN, Paulínia, SP) e pescadores artesanais (Colônia Z 7 - Itaipu e Piratininga, Niterói, RJ), considerando que esses trabalhadores estão submetidos a intensas transformações socioambientais ocorridas em seus cotidianos e manifestam a depressão como expressão da subjetivação, no indivíduo, de uma intensa complexidade social.This paper presents a reflection based on some results of the research project Quality of life in complex societies: the depression between workers of petrochemical industry and artisan fishermen. Is must be pointed out that this research is a large part of a deep theory developed since the 90's. In a deep field research, the quality of life through analysis of depressive states in workers of the petrochemical industry (REPLAN, Paulínia, SP) and artisan fishermen (7 Colony Z - Itaipu and Piratininga, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro) was examined, considering that these workers are under intense social-environmental transformations in their daily routine and revealing depression as expression of subjectivity, in the individual, of an intense social complexity.
